I am writing this as a way of letting off my chest, the truck load of anxiety that grows with waiting for acceptance or rejection letters from schools.

I've spotted somebody who applied to KSU. I'm calmer than I was before. I applied to five schools;

Oxford University (If they send an acceptance letter, I'll probably run mad for one week, then accept the offer the following week)

Brandeis University (Hopeful)

University of Tennessee (Not sure)

Georgia State University (Highly Optimistic)

Did anybody else apply to any of those?

Guys you doing a great job on this thread as we galvanize each other may God continue to bless you all. Please guys what is best way to search for schools that can provide me with fundings either GA or TA in IT related courses.I reschedule my GRE exam till May.Wishing every one best of luck in all our endeavors.

A Google search would be a good start. Keywords; "Your course", "US schools" (I'm assuming you're gunning for those), "PhD or M.Sc", "Teaching Assistantships". Hit search.

My brother don't let inferiority complex kill you o. Have you heard an Italian speaking English? Or a French person speaking English? Or even a hungarian? Their English is heavily accented with their native tongue as a result they don't pronounce some of the words well. Yet they write TOEFL and they pass and they don't laugh at each other cos of their accent. There is nothing wrong in having an accent, everybody has an accent.

Or one can even fake an accent there. It's just for 45 seconds right? Not too difficult if you ask me.

Nairaland doesn't notify me of new posts or mentions, I just come here anytime I want to touch base with my roots, always soothing. Generally, schools would want you to direct all of your inquires to the admissions committee and not the faculty members, so you might see some of them explicitly telling you not to contact those lecturers.

But, if you feel you've deep interests in a Prof's research group, send them a short and quick email, hinting briefly about your background, and focusing more on your perspective of his research works. You might gently add a PS that you've applied, and would be interested to wok with him. Bottom line, is don't put him under any pressure to get you into his lab. And don't set your expectations too high; if the adcomms thinks your app is good, you'll be admitted, when you'll get to choose which lab you wanna go.

So, I'll say send the mails, even though there's every chance they don't reply. Or if they would.

Cheers!

Yeah true about the email, most top-rated schools state it clearly on their websites.

Would try to check-in here as often as I can as well. Thanks a lot.

Do you guys get notifications for the posts here? Just wondering how the lot of you active followers get to see virtually everything posted here.

Anyways, I posted my scores way back like three weeks ago. I've applied to the schools and I'm currently waiting for feedbacks. My own question is, do you think I should initiate correspondence with any of the faculty members whose research work dovetails with mine?

I feel it might enhance my chances of being considered for admission but, I'm also scared it might hurt them.

And yeah, Time2Smile, like somebody suggested, the best shot you have at getting your recommenders to respond to their emails, is to get to where they are and help them with it. I was shuttling between Lagos and Ibadan to get mine done. You might want to employ these tips for yours;

1. Get down to their office with your fully charged laptop
2. Draft a copy of the recommendation letter for them
3. Make sure your hotspot works pretty fine

All the best.

Thanks a million for your replies.

I thought it'd be too late to apply for fall 17, since we're already in Jan 17. Also most of the top 100 schools in Physics (US News), that I feel I have higher prospects of securing admission to, have ended registration.

I don't know if I can still meet the deadline for some others, since one'll still have to send transcripts to the schools and that could take a while. I was wondering of going for Spring 18 but don't know if funding will be available.

I'm in a pickle here.

From what I've observed, most schools provide funding for students who meet the fall deadline. I wouldn't advise anybody to apply for admission in spring or any other time.

As for your transcript, I know most schools in the U.S ask for unofficial transcripts. That is, a scanned copy of your transcript to be uploaded to your application on the school's website. Your school will only need to send OFFICIAL transcripts after you've been given admission in the school you applied to.

The following schools have their fall deadlines late in January, early February or later in the year. Check to see if they offer your course:

Kent State University
University of Nebraska, Lincoln
University of Tennessee
Georgia State University

All the best.

Scholastica16:

Like we have all tried to say in the past and even now: the chances of gaining admission is a holistic process and not just zeroed down to certain GRE scores or even a GPA. However, schools have a minimum GPA they work with for both undergraduate and graduate study and I think you can begin from there. Your 2'2 first degree, do you think when converted by WES could lie above 3.0/4.0 or thereabouts? That's one good indicator. Second, your masters' GPA that is strong is also an added advantage. If you have done any internships, publications or viable research experience they contribute more weightage than standardized test scores albeit yours is definitely competitive for most B-tier schools. I think you can guess by now that I am trying to say you are good to go and should have started looking for schools that match your profile.

Schools are realizing that graduate work is beyond having excellent test-taking skills. Some people can ace tests and still not complete graduate work because graduate work can be grueling and in so doing provide less room for people to gratify themselves with good grades. If you feel you are cut-out for this, then your chances are good.

Now please, don't ask people to recommend schools for you without bringing your own findings to the table as that would smack of laziness which is becoming the Nigerian way. With all that has been said here, go and find out schools that in recent trends have accepted profiles such as yours (with the right funding and program) and if your list is too long we can help you prune it.

Wow. Thanks a lot for your prompt response. I'll search for those schools and get back to the tthread. Thanks again.

Hello everyone, I need your take on this:

On the GRE, I scored 154 in Verbal, 152 in Quant, and 3.5 in Writing. Scored 100 on the TOEFL iBT. Finished with a 2'2, First degree (Political Science) and a strong 2'1 at Masters level (Political Science). I'm looking to apply for a PhD program in Political science at some not-so-highly-rated U.S schools. What are my chances of being considered for admission?

These are simply unemployed youths. Some might even be nairalanders. The root problem here is that government has failed us. No jobs, so these young men have resorted to self employment. Our leaders need to make things right as soon as possible.

Who have been to heaven before and told you how it looks ?? Nobody
Who have went to hell and told you guys how it looks ??

Or you read it in the Bible, who wrote the Bible ?? God ??

Who do you call Jesus ?? The guy whose mother was impregnated by the holy spirit (the only person to be impregnated by this imaginary Holy spirit)
How and where did you get the picture of that Jesus that died 4000 years ago ?? Oh, there was iPhone 7 when your imaginary God was on earth

May your days be long. It's people like you we need in this country.
