The answer was simple. Ade gave a condition that what would eventually lead to holy matrimony was if she could become pregnant for him. That was the condition: produce a baby and there would be a trip to the altar.

So far, Nana could not fulfil that part. For the past three years now, they had been trying, but there was yet to be fruitfulness. They had consulted some specialists. After series of tests, they were told that there was nothing biologically wrong with them.

Nana could not understand why the conception could not be if indeed all was well. She had persuaded Ade that they should go for another tests. The results were the same as the first ones. If nothing was wrong anywhere, why should the problem persist?

Nana was more concerned about the issue. Ade always played the issue down, or appeared to do so. She was also bothered that he put child bearing a condition. If indeed he loved her, why couldn't he go ahead and formalize the relationship? It was as if he nurtured some fears or doubts about the prospects of a fruitful union. Why must he do so?

It was minutes after eight when she finished cooking. Mostly, he came back home around nine in the night. She covered the pot tightly. She always ate with him, so she would wait until he came.

In the sitting room, she watched the movies channel, but her mind kept going to their - or should she say her - challenge. He came in some minutes after nine, just when the movie was about to end.

They hugged briefly.

'How was your day?' He was all smiles.

'Fine, we thank God. How about yours?'

'Not bad, but I'm tired.' He removed his tie and shoes. Then, he took them to the bedroom.

She helped with the briefcase to the bedroom. 'Eh yah. Sorry. By the time you eat and relax, you'll feel refreshed.'

The stuffiness inside the bedroom welcomed him. He had planned to buy an air-conditioner but couldn't do so up till now. He sighed and decided to do something about it. He changed to his night wears and, together, they returned to the sitting-room.

She went to the kitchen to dish out the food. When she served it, his face was delighted.

'Hmn, it smells good. I hope the taste will be very good as well.' The smile danced on his cheeks.

Nana made a slight frown. So, you don't trust my cooking any more?'

He smiled and patted her on the shoulders.

'I still trust you, my dear.' He winked at her.

As soon as he had the first bite of the food, he broke into an easy smile. 'Yes, now I can say that the food is very delicious.'

She nodded. 'I told you.'

They ate in silence for a while.

'You are the one that made me to like this food. I hardly liked yam or anything that had to do with yam before.' He took a mouthful and munched noisily.

'I learnt most of my cooking from my mother.' She ate and watched him eat ravenously.

'That means, like mother, like daughter.' He made a small laugh.

She nodded. 'You can say that again.'

After the food, they were back to the sofa in the sitting-room. She allowed him some rest before she broached on the issue that had been
agitating her mind.

'Darling, don't you think we should see a pastor for this our problem?' She studied his face for his reaction.

'What problem?'

'This our challenge, now.' She opted for the euphemism with the hope that the problem would soon be over. ' This one that we've been
looking for a child for some time, now.'

He sighed and changed the television channel. 'And is that why we should see a pastor? Have the two of us not gone for tests, and have the results not shown that there is no problem?'

'Yes, medically, I believe there is no problem.' Nana nodded emphatically. 'I think the problem goes beyond medical one. I think the problem is spiritual. That is why I think we should see a pastor.'

Ade gave a short, mirthless laugh and shook his head.

'Just hear yourself.' He continued to look at the t.v rather than looking at her. 'Medically, just as you said, there is no problem with either of us, so why the fuss? Maybe we just need to put in more efforts. I'm sure if we calculate your ovulation period, or whatever they call it, well, things will work out as desired. What has all these got to do with a pastor?'

Nana sighed. She was not surprised that Ade was taking that stance. He always relegated anything spiritual to the background. Since she had met him, she realized he had always undermined anything spiritual or religious. He hardly went to church and wouldn't be bothered about praying. Even when she converted to Christianity, he was cool about it. As a Christian himself, he should have been instrumental to her conversion.

But she always believed she could change him, somehow. She had always been telling him the necessity of going to church. What an irony! She was the one professing and practicing the faith.

'I believe the fact that medicine could not find any cause or solution means we should look for the best alternative.' Nana was down to earth.

'As far as I can see, the solution is spiritual.' She would not relent in her assertiveness. 'Let's try this spiritual angle and see if it won't work. And I'm sure it will work.'

Ade remained unconvinced. 'You can go ahead and see any pastor or prophet, or any other person you want to see.' There were taints of indifference and anger in his tone. 'As for me, count me out.'

‘Alright. Here is the business. There is a large amount of cash I want to move from an account into your own account. The money will be there for some months. Then, I’ll move it to another account, most likely a foreign account. For as long as the money is in your account, you’re not to take over it or spend from it. You will be given 20% of the total value of the money, but you’ll get it in two phases. The first phase is you’ll receive ten percent of the value the moment the money enters your account. The second phase will be after the money has moved out. That is all. That is the business proposition.’

He sighed deeply. ‘What is the possibility that the anti-graft agencies will not come running after me?’ he asked.

‘Don’t worry about that. That will not happen, for it has been taken care of.’ She looked at him keenly. ‘Are you in this or not?’

He sighed again, thinking. As somebody close to the seat of power, this should not be unexpected. He was, after all, no longer an ordinary citizen. He didn’t know how much the money was, but he had no doubt that it would be something substantial. Alright, he did not steal any money, did he?

‘I’m part of the deal,’ he said.

Ms. Popo smiled warmly at him. She brought her right hand for a handshake. ‘Welcome to the real world, Ayo Ariyo.’

He noticed that she had dropped the ‘Mister’ title. He smiled too. ‘Thank you, madam.’

‘Once you play your part well, you’re going to be fulfilled.’

He nodded. ‘If I may ask, what is the source of this money?’

She shook her head. ‘Sorry, you’re not to ask that. Yours is to say yes or no to the deal, and to keep sealed lips no matter what you decide.’

He nodded again. ‘No problem, madam.’

She shook his hand again. ‘Expect the deposit alert any time from tomorrow. Don’t forget to keep to your own part of the deal. And don’t get greedy. Don’t become greedy by trying to play smart.’

He smiled. ‘No, I will not. Thank you, madam for considering me worthy of your trust and confidentiality.’

‘You’re welcome.’

Some minutes later, after Ms. Popo had left, he re-entered his sitting-room. Juliet was back there. She looked at him curiously, but he only smiled. Her eyes were questioning. Just as he thought, when they were in his bedroom, she asked what the woman wanted and why they had to leave the house.

‘I hope she’s not trying to seduce you,’ she said.

He chuckled at that. ‘Oh, come on, Juliet.’ He had already thought of a lie to tell her. ‘She only came to me to discuss domestic issues and she wanted me to counsel her.’

It did not matter whether Juliet believed that story or not. He stuck to it. She shrugged and came to embrace him.

‘I missed you,’ she cooed.

He was bemused. ‘I miss you too.’

‘My period has stopped.’

‘Oh.’ He grinned. ‘That’s good.’

She smiled, still holding him. ‘Is that all you will say?’

He grinned again. ‘Yes. But watch what I will do.’

He lifted her by the waist while she encircled his waist with her legs. They stared into each other’s eyes.

‘I think you should eat a bit more so that you can graduate from feather weight to light weight,’ he said.

‘You really want me to be fat?’

‘No, not fat. Just put on some weight. You still look like a school girl.’

She closed her eyes. He brought her down and kissed her. At first, the kiss was soft and gentle but it soon became a ravenous one. He put her
on the bed and removed her clothes. Taboo or not, he found her a pretty young thing and the affair a sweet one.

In the office the following day, truly, he received a deposit alert on his phone and was amazed by the amount. One hundred naira had been deposited there. He whistled to himself and mentally calculated twenty percent of that. That would be twenty million naira! He whistled to himself again.

His phone rang. It was Ms. Popo on the line.

‘Good day, madam.’

‘Good day, Ayo. You’ve seen the alert?’

‘Yes, madam.’

‘Alright. It’s as we agreed.’

The line was cut. No problem about what we had agreed, he thought. No problem. So, even without stress, he had made millions of naira
already. Coincidentally, it came with his first pay from work. He remembered the deal he had with Mr. Idowu. He had no intention or breaking his vows, so he would send his own percentage to him. As for this new deal with Ms. Popo, that was supposed to be a secret deal, wasn’t it?

He was in a happy mood and he thought of what he could do with the earnings. He had to start developing the piece of land he owned at Ijede Road, off Ikorodu. Yes, at least, he should be able to put up a befitting duplex on that piece of land. Then he thought of the car he used in
Lagos. That car had to be changed. He would also upgrade his wardrobe. Of course, Mandy and the children would also enjoy upgraded lives. Plus Juliet! He smiled to himself.

Days after she called Mandy and leaked the story of the affair Ayo as having in Abuja to Ayo’s wife, Ore became remorseful. She realized that no matter how aggrieved she had felt, she shouldn’t have called his wife to tell her. That act certainly portrayed her as a vindictive and bad person. To make matter worse, the action had not brought about the result she had desired. What she thought would happen was that he would become sober and tried to reach out to her. She was wrong in this calculation as Ayo had not deemed it fit to call her.
Now, she was remorseful. She thought of what she could do. The first option was to call him and apologize for what she had done. That would be a face-saving measure, but she did not mind. The second option would be to keep on hoping that he would call her and make reconciliation.

After weighing the options for some minutes, she decided to go for the first option.

She called his number. It rang on and on. Maybe he was busy. She gave him some minutes and called the number again. It was the same result.

She decided she would not call until after couple of hours. When she called him the time third time and he still did not pick it, she realized she was about to lose him for good. Then, she decided to send a text message to his line. In the message, she apologized for her ‘over reaction,’ claiming that she did it because she was ‘crazily in love’ with him and did not want to lose him. To make amend, she said she was ready to call his wife again and declare to her that she was only playing prank.

After sending the message, she expected him to reply within the next few minutes. He did not. Ore would not give up. She would still call his number again.

On Wednesday afternoon, Ms. Popo called Ayo’s number.

‘Good afternoon, our SSA,’ she greeted.

‘Good afternoon, Ms. Popo.’

‘Hope you’re finding your job interesting.’

‘Yes. Very, very interesting.’

‘That’s good. I was wondering if I could invite you to dinner in my residence this evening.’

His mind was busy. Dinner in her residence? Well, that would not be a bad idea.

‘It will be a pleasure, madam,’ he replied.

‘Good. By seven p.m., I’ll send my driver to come and take you. See you, then.’

‘Okay, madam.’

He smiled to himself. Madam was probably trying to solidify their business relationship, he reasoned. When he got home, he told Juliet that he would be going out by seven to attend a political meeting with some politicians.

‘Are you now a politician?’ she asked innocently.

‘No. but my job entails that I should be part of some political meetings to stay abreast of what goes on and to be at best in advising my principal.’

She nodded. She had no other choice. By quarter to seven, he was informed that the driver sent by Ms. Popo had come. He had already dressed up in simple cotton shirt and jeans trousers, with a black, leather pam shoes. She nodded at Juliet.

‘Don’t stay too long,’ she told him, as if she was his wife cautioning her husband about nocturnal outings.

He nodded and smiled at her. ‘Don’t worry.’

He sat himself comfortably at the back seat of the Mercedes Benz jeep as he was driven to her apartment in the high-brow district.

Her place was bigger and better. The interior was tastefully furnished. She was waiting for him in the expansive sitting-room, dressed in t-shirt and jeans. She seemed to like wearing jeans trousers as casual. He could guess the reason: she looked younger and smarter in it.

There were two maids arranging the dinning-table. When he saw what they put there, he was convinced there were other guests coming.

She invited him to the dinning-table with smiles.

He sighed as he took his seats. ‘Are we not going to wait for the other guests?’ he asked.

She smiled knowingly. ‘There are no other guests.’

He smiled too. ‘One would have thought this dinner is for three or four people.’

‘No. It’s only for you and me.’

He smiled and nodded. Indeed, the dishes – both local and intercontinental – were rich. They ate slowly, savoring the taste. After the meal,
they took wine to ‘cool down.’ The domestic servants waited on them. They returned to the living-room with their glasses of drinks.

‘I must thank you, madam, for this sumptuous meal and warm fete,’ he said, smiling.

‘It’s a pleasure,’ she returned. ‘I always like to appreciate those who deserve to be appreciated.’

He was all smiles. They sat not too far from each other. The domestic servants had retreated inside.

‘So, tell me, how are you enjoying Abuja, so far?’

He smiled. ‘I must say I’ve been having a very fulfilling time. It’s a wonderful experience knowing and coming close with someone like you.’

She nodded. She didn’t expect him to say anything less complimentary.

‘How’s your married life?’ she asked.

He nodded. ‘So far, so good.’

‘I guess you’re lucky there. I wasn’t that lucky.’

‘What happened?’ he wanted to know.

She sighed. ‘The relationship collapsed even before it started. But I have a daughter. I’m okay with my life, though.’

He wondered how such a life would be. As a career woman, she had something to occupy her time.

‘Well, at least you’re a career woman,’ he pointed out. ‘I know it’s not easy to become a Perm. Sec. in this country. And it’s such a powerful position. Your attaining it is no mean feat.’

She grinned. ‘Thanks for your compliments.’

‘And talking about relationship, I think it’s you who want to remain single. With your beautiful face, I’m sure men must have been disturbing you.’

She smiled. ‘You’re quite right. I just believe I’m not cut out for marriage.’

He wasn’t surprised to hear that. Many career and successful women think so.

‘I like to act like a man and go get what I want,’ she said.

He nodded. ‘Are you a feminist?’

Tony took the front seat.

'Take me to the guest house,' Biyi instructed the driver.

'Yes, sir.' Leke fastened his seat belts and brought the car engine to life.

He already knew the particular guest house his boss was referring to.

'Give me the latest gist from the office.' Biyi brought out a newspaper. He would combine scanning through with listening to Tony.

As his PA, it behoved of Tony to be at breast of whatever development was happening in the office in the absence of his boss. Tony did what he was asked to do.

Biyi listened without a word. When the former was through, he nodded and brought out his phone.

'Hello, how're you?' His voice was exuberant over the line.

'Hello, darling.'

'I'm back in Lagos. Let's meet at the guest house.'

'Okay, dear.'

He turned to Tony. 'You can drop off at the next bus station and go back to the office. I won't be coming to the place today. I need to relax.'

'Yes, sir.'

'We'll be seeing tomorrow. Take care.'

'Yes, sir.'

A minute later, Tony alighted from the car. Another five minutes after that, Biyi was driven to the guest house. He went straight to his suite, the one he had perpetually kept for himself. Leke, the driver would wait in the car. To ease his boredom, Biyi ordered that some snacks and drinks be served to the driver.

Biyi went in and relaxed on one of the lounging chairs, while waiting for his companion. A call came in. It was a business call from Cheng, a Chinese partner.

'Don't worry.' Biyi spoke reassuringly. 'I'll be in the office tomorrow morning. Come around to the office tomorrow, and we'll talk.'

Not long after he disconnected the line, the intercom came alive.

'Miss Nancy is around to see you, sir,' the receptionist informed.

'Yeah, tell her to come to my suite, right away.'

About a minute later, Nancy came in. She came to hug him where he was sitting.

'I miss you.' Her voice was cool and alluring.

'How's everything?' He smiled at her. 'Now, don't bother to answer. I can see that you look chic.'

She smiled too. 'Thank you.'

She sat by his side and rubbed his thigh.

'How was your trip?'

He smiled broadly. 'It was very successful. All went well.'

He ordered for drinks and pepper soup. They chatted as they took their delicacies and drinks.

'I don't like the way your wife harassed me days ago,' she began. 'If you see the kind of insults she gave me. Not only that, she slapped me and tore my clothes into shreds.' She felt the overstatement was necessary.

'Yes, you said so the other time.' He looked hard and frowned. 'It's very hard to believe she would do that. Are you indeed sure she did all that?'

Nancy made a face. 'So, you don't believe me. Are you saying I'm lying?'

Biyi smiled and wrapped his left hand of her shoulders. 'I'm not saying you're lying. It's just that I find it difficult that she would go to that
extent of fighting you. Something must have gone over her.'

She sighed. 'Don't worry, when you come to my house, I'll show my clothes that she tore. I have the evidence at home.'

'Sorry about it. I'll say you should not worry, I'll make it up to you. For her part, I know what to do.'

She made a hurtful look. 'Just imagine the embarrassment she gave me. And I was only on the defensive that day. If I had done my own back, it wouldn't be funny at all.'

'It's okay. You did the right thing by not fighting back. As I said, don't worry. I'm going to compensate you.'

He kissed her briefly in a patronizing way. 'Now, let's forget that. Come and sit right here on my lap and let me show you how much I've missed you.'

Nana walked up to the customer that was looking at the exotic nightgowns, probably wondering which to select.

'Can I help you?' Nana offered. 'D'you have any problem about making a choice?'

The customer turned to look at her. 'Well, I'm just wondering about which is sexier between this gown and that one.'

Nana smiled at her. It was one of her tasks as the shop manager to assist customers in making a choice.

She looked at the woman well, as if she was studying her. Then, she looked at the gowns.

'This one is very good for you.' She grinned and pointed at the pink one.

The woman nodded as if she agreed. She chose the recommended one and went on to pick some other clothing items.

Nana went back to her small table from where she could see the entrance/exit door.

The cashier took stocks of what the woman had bought, calculated the prices, received the payments and issued a receipt.

'Thank you, sister,' the woman told Nana as she departed.

'It's a pleasure, madam.' Nana smiled in return.

Nana enjoyed her job, but it was not easy working for Madam Funmi Osho. The madam hardly came around, but anytime she did, one could
easily feel the tension as she would likely fret over one thing or the other.

For about two years now, Nana had been working at BestItems store. The store specialized in wears for all sexes and ages, from trendy formal wears to glamorous, casual wears.

Nana was hardworking and honest. The madam must have noticed this and had tried to reward her diligence.

When it was six p.m., the shop closed for the day. She kept the proceeds where she normally kept them and locked the door. She would be going to the bank the following morning to make some cash deposits.

She went to the bus stop to take a bus going to Ojota. From there, she would take another bus to Ketu. All things being equal, she should be at home by seven p.m.

She alighted from the bus at Tipper garage bus stop. Her home was at Ogunbanwo street. She moved smartly down the road. She had decided to cook yam porridge this night. She changed to a casual wear and went to the kitchen. There were some yams remaining there.

She also had all the ingredients she would use in the deep freezer. As usual, she would make the meal be delicious, spicing it with beef, fish
and shrimps.

Nana lived with her live-in-lover, Ade in the two-bedroom apartment. For the past three years, they had been together, living like mister and missus. Even the neighbours thought they were already married.

Ade claimed he loved her and was really to spend the rest of his life with her. Nana had no doubt on her part that she was in love. So, why couldn't they make the nuptial tie once and for all? He was in his late thirties while she was approaching mid-thirties. Age was not on her side.

So, why the delay?

The answer was simple. Ade gave a condition that what would eventually lead to holy matrimony was if she could become pregnant for him. That was the condition: produce a baby and there would be a trip to the altar.

She smiled. ‘Maybe another time.’ She looked at him earnestly. ‘I’ve actually come to discuss something important with you. Do you mind if we discuss in my car?’

He was surprised to hear that. What could be so important that could not be discussed in the house, but in her car?

He nodded. ‘It’s alright, ma’am.’

She got up. Her tight-fitting jeans trousers fitted her, but he chided himself on time to stop studying her features. Together, they went out of the sitting-room to where her car was parked.

‘Yussuf and David, you can excuse us for a minute,’ she told her driver and her police orderly, who were lolling around the car.

The two men sauntered away. Ms. Popo sat in the driver’s seat while Ayo was at the passenger’s seat, next to her.

‘I’m sure you must be very curious what all this is about. Well, I chose this place because I don’t want anyone eavesdropping on what I want to tell you. Neither do I want any bugging device listening to us. This is my personal car, and I believe, it’s clean and safe.’

Ayo nodded. He was still wondering what Ms. Popo was driving at.

‘To start with, let me say I’ve been observing you for the past weeks keenly, and I’m impressed with your diligence and dignity. You strike me as someone I can do some business with, and that’s why I’m here.’

In his mind, he was wondering what business she was talking about. He waited.

‘Before I tell you the business, there’s a little something the two of us have to do.’

His mind was racing fast. ‘What could be that?’ he asked.

She brought out her handbag and unzipped it. She then brought out an object that looked like a horn, tied with red cloth.

‘It’s very harmless when one does what is right. You’re going to hold this and say to it that you will never betray me or reveal whatever transpired between us to any other person, dead or alive.’

He was shocked. Was it not business she wanted to discuss with him. What then necessitated swearing to an oath?

As if she was reading his mind, she quickly said: ‘As I said, this thing is very harmless once you keep to the bargain. Of course, after telling you the business, you have the right to go ahead or not. The only thing is whatever you decide, it must remain within you. You are never to disclose or discuss it with anyone.’

He was full of thoughts. If the condition was that he should keep a sealed lip, there shouldn’t be any problem with that. But come to think of it, in the last four weeks or so, this would be the third time he would be asked to swear!

‘Alright,’ he said. ‘As long as I’m not bound to go ahead with the business proposition willy-nilly, I can swear to the oath.’

She was happy with his response, and she smiled. ‘Good.’ She handed the object to him and asked him to say to it that he would never betray the trust and confidence he had reposed in him, otherwise there would be doom for him. He also wore that no other person would hear about whatever transpired between them.

After he had sworn, she asked him to touch the edge of the object three times. She took it from him and returned it inside her hand bag.

‘Alright. Here is the business. There is a large amount of cash I want to move from an account into your own account. The money will be there for some months. Then, I’ll move it to another account, most likely a foreign account. For as long as the money is in your account, you’re not to take over it or spend from it. She climbed the weighing scale. The device read 92 kilograms. Gosh, that was on the heavy side. She was almost the double of her weight as a maiden. She was heavy now, no doubt, and she must do something about it.

She would have to watch her diet, first and foremost. All those fatty food, those fried chickens and calories must be cut down. Then, she would buy some exercise kits to get a better shape.

That very afternoon, Funmi went to buy some keep-fit kits, including a stationary bike. It was to show how serious she was. She was determined more than ever to bring the old Funmi back.

The plane hovered in the sky. It was time for landing. His seat belts, like the other passengers, were fastened. Biyi awaited the landing and the disembarkation. It had been another successful trip and he thanked God for it.

'Thank you for your patronage, sir. We look forward to seeing you on the next flight.' The soft voice of the air hostess - the one that had served him during the Jos-Lagos flight - said, as he moved to the exit of the plane.

Biyi nodded and smiled at her. Outside the plane, the hot air hit his face as he descended the disembarkation ladder. Biyi moved swiftly towards the arrival hall, his brief case clutched in his right hand.

Tony, his personal assistant who had been standing by and waiting for him in the last half hour, came to meet him.

'You're welcome, sir.' Tony curtsied. 'I hope you had a nice flight, sir.'

'Thanks, Tony. How are you?'

'Fine, sir.'

Tony relieved him of the briefcase and led him outside the building to the car park. Leke, the driver who loitered around the park, quickly went to the car and stepped inside it as he saw them approaching.

'You're welcome, oga,.' Leke made an obeisance and showed his near brownish teeth in a smile.

'Thank you.' The boss settled down comfortably in the back seat, while Tony took the front seat.

'Take me to the guest house,' Biyi instructed the driver.

A middle-aged woman came in carrying a bag. ‘Madam said I should give this to you, sir,’ she said.

‘Madam?’

‘Yes, Ms. Popo.’

The basket bag contained two food flasks, two bottles of wine, two bottled water and two packs of fruit juice.

‘All these for me?’ he asked, surprised.

‘Yes, sir.’

‘Thank you. I will call her to say thank you, right away.’

‘Okay, sir.’ The woman left his office.

He picked up his phone to call Ms. Funke Popo, but she beat him to it as her call came in.

‘Hello, madam.’

‘Hello, Mr. Ariyo. I sent a woman to bring some food to you.’

‘Yes, madam. I was about to call you and thank you. You shouldn’t have gone through all these troubles, madam.’

‘It’s no trouble. I asked my domestic maid to prepare it. I just felt like giving you a decent meal.’

‘Oh, thank you, madam. I do really appreciate your kindness.’

‘It’s okay. It’s a pleasure. Enjoy your meal.’

‘Thank you, madam.’

The line was disconnected. He whistled to himself. Just what was this woman trying to do? First, the previous day, she had sent a driver and a car to convey him from the airport to his residence. now, she sent a woman to bring meal for him. He opened the food flasks to know the contents. The first flask contained richly-cooked fried rice. The second one was filled with fried chicken and fried turkey, with some beef and stew. The chicken could last for days. Why was Ms. Popo doing all this? He asked himself.

In addition, she also put two bottles of wine and some drinks. All these were more than what a man could finish at a time!

He called his personal secretary. ‘Please get me some plates and serve me some food. He was served the sumptuous meal, but even a lot of rice was still remaining in the flask.

‘Care for some?’ he asked his secretary.

She declined, but when he asked his driver, he accepted to eat some rice. He had to take the remaining chicken and turkey home, plus the drinks.

On getting home later day, Munirat was asked to take care of the meats.

He could not even eat any other food that day. By eight p.m., when he and Juliet were watching television, Ms. Popo came visiting again.

‘Madam, the madam,’ he greeted. ‘Welcome to my humble residence.’

She smiled expansively. Juliet had to excuse Ayo and the important guest.

‘It’s always a pleasant surprise to have you in my residence,’ Ayo said. ‘Welcome to my home.’

‘The pleasure is mine,’ she replied.

‘I hope you enjoy the meal sent to you the other time,’ she said.

He smiled and nodded. ‘In all honesty, I did really enjoy myself. Thank you, very much.’

‘I realized that since your wife is not around her, it will be good at least once in a while to let you have decent meal.’

‘Thank you, madam. I do really appreciate that gesture.’

‘You’re welcome.’

‘What drinks can I offer you, madam? Is it wine, champagne? Anything. It’s on the house.’

She smiled. ‘Maybe another time.’ She looked at him earnestly. ‘I’ve actually come to discuss something important with you. Do you mind if we discuss in my car?’

He was surprised to hear that. What could be so important that could not be discussed in the house, but in her car?

Because of the presence of the driver, he could not discuss much with her. Many minutes later, the car slid inside the compound of his residence.

As he got down from the car, the house maid quickly came out of the house to welcome him

‘Welcome, sir.’

‘Thank you.’

The maid got the valise from Jane and took it inside.

Ayo turned to Jane. ‘Thank you very much for all the troubles. My regards to Ms. Popo, but I’ll soon call her to thank her for everything.’

‘With all pleasure, sir,’ Jane replied. ‘So long, sir.’

He nodded. ‘See you.’

He entered the house and went straight to his bedroom. The maid had already opened the place and had put his valise there.

He changed from the brown, kaftan dress to casuals of t-shirt and boxer. He then called Mandy.

‘I’ve safely arrived Abuja,’ he said.

‘Ah, thank God. Hope everything is all right.’

‘Yes. No problem.’

‘We thank God.’

‘Okay, see you again.’

‘Bye.’

He disconnected the line. There was a short knock on the door and before he could answer, the knocker opened the door and stepped inside the bedroom.

It was Juliet. She closed the door and had her back on it. He turned to stare at her.

‘My dear Juliet. My baby girl, how’re you?’

‘Not fine,’ she answered briefly.

‘Oh, Lord, why that? Why are you not fine?’

‘Because I missed you terribly.’

‘Oh, my baby.’ He went on to her and hugged her. ‘Well, I’m back. I’m back, dear.’

She smiled, hugged him, but still made a face. ‘I’m also not happy that you didn’t bother to call me.’

‘I’m sorry,’ he said quickly. ‘Mandy was with me throughout the weekend. I could not call you.’

‘Hmn.’

‘To make matter worse. The lady Ore, that you called had hinted Mandy that I have a lady friend in Abuja and she is suspicious. So, I have to
tread carefully.’

Juliet pretended her sister had not hinted her about the ‘Abuja babe.’

‘You mean Ore went to the extent of informing your wife about a lady friend here? She must be very bad and desperate to do that.’

‘That’s what she did, and I’m so miffed with her.’

He pulled her to the bed and they sat on it.

‘How was your flight to and from Lagos?’

‘It was beautiful. I thank God for journey mercies.’

Just then, Munirat knocked on the door. ‘What should I prepare for you for dinner, sir?’ she asked from outside the room.

He thought briefly. ‘Eh, make pounded yam.’

‘Okay, sir.’

He gave a pause of some seconds before he spoke. ‘You’re looking more and more beautiful, Juliet.’

She smiled. ‘Thank you.’

‘I can see you’ve done your hair. It’s beautiful,’ he commented.

‘Thank you.’

He held her lovingly by the waist and she seemed very pleased by that.

Chapter Nine

On Monday, Ayo and Juliet both dressed for work. While he would be going to resume work at his office at the Ministry of Information and IT, she would be starting her primary assignment at the Ministry of Culture. After his driver had dropped him in front of his office complex, the driver was instructed to drive Juliet to the other Ministry.

He had a meeting with the Minister, his boss, about ten in the morning, during when he gave him some briefings. The Minister commended him
for a job well done. During the break, his secretary came to inform him that a woman sent by the Perm. Sec. wanted to see him.

‘Tell her to come in right away,’ he instructed.

Literature / Re: Captives Of Lust by ToyinOlorunsola(m): 5:22pm On Mar 06, 2019
When Funmi got to the house, she went upstairs to her room. The large bedroom was big enough to have lounging chairs and a big flat screen. She used to share the place with her husband before, but in the last one year or so, he had opted to have his own separate bedroom.

She dropped her bag on the bed and flopped on it. She sighed to herself as she went over the encounter with Nancy in her mind. Funmi had got to know about her through Leke, her husband's driver. With money as the inducement, Leke had revealed the latest catch of his boss, her name, the residence and some other personal details of Nancy. That very Saturday morning, Funmi had instructed her own driver to take her to

Nancy's house for a show down. Funmi's car was just parking by the gate, when the gate was opened wide and Nancy drove out. Funmi was sure Nancy was the one behind the wheel as the face matched the pictures she had been given.

She had asked Turo to go after the car. They trailed the car to the Maryland plaza. Funmi decided to bid her time and to accost Nancy only
after the latter had bought what she wanted to buy.

They had not waited for too long. With her eyes glued to the exit of the plaza, she saw Nancy as she jauntily moved to her car.

Despite the fact that she now put on sunglasses, Funmi was sure she was the one. The latter had gone to her parked car. With no time to waste, Funmi had moved towards the Toyota car.

Funmi sighed again and brought her phone out. She flipped to the pictures and stared at Nancy's photos. The lady looked slim and beautiful.

This was the lady (or was she one of the ladies?) distracting Biyi.

Funmi looked closely at the lady again, as she had done several times before. Nancy should be in her early thirties. Funmi tried to go back the
memory lane when she was about Nancy's age. She too was slim and beautiful. Years of marriage and matronly life had blossomed her to what she was.

At forty-two and married for over thirteen years, Funmi had certainly gone through a lot of transformations, from the attractive, slim gal to plump, though attractive woman. She had three children, the eldest being thirteen. She and Biyi had come a long way.

She stood up from the bed and went to the adjoining bathroom and toilet. There was a giant mirror there. She stared at her reflection. She was still beautiful, she decided. The problem was the plumpness.

Could it be that Biyi was losing interest in her because of her being fat? He had not really complained that she was on the fat side, but that wouldn't mean he was still besotted to her looks, as he used to be.

Maybe she should try to slim down and go back to the attractive, slim lady she was before her marriage. Maybe that would make him stop the affairs he was having outside and he would look inward again.

But why did men behave that way? Why must he turn against fidelity, all because his wife had become fat? Why couldn't he remain faithful to his wife, whether she remained slim or had grown fat? Was the marriage not supposed to be for better or for worse; in slimness or in fatness?

She climbed the weighing scale. The device read 92 kilograms. Gosh, that was on the heavy side. She was almost the double of her weight as a maiden. She was heavy now, no doubt, and she must do something about it.

She would have to watch her diet, first and foremost. All those fatty food, those fried chickens and calories must be cut down. Then, she would buy some exercise kits to get a better shape.

That very afternoon, Funmi went to buy some keep-fit kits, including a stationary bike. It was to show how serious she was. She was determined more than ever to bring the old Funmi back.

As soon as he left the house, Mandy put a call to Juliet, her sister.

‘Hello, Juliet. How are you?’

‘Fine, sister. How is Lagos?’

‘Lagos is fine. So, you’ll start your primary assignment tomorrow?’

‘Yes, just like I told you.’

‘Good. There’s something I want you to do for me.’

‘What’s that, sister?’

‘See, I have information that my husband is dating a lady over there in Abuja.’

‘A lady?’

‘Yes. Thank God, you’re there. I want you to closely monitor him and I want a regular report of your findings.’

‘That will be no problem. But I think that information is false and malicious. So far, I can say that Uncle Ayo is a very faithful man. Sister, you’re
lucky o. Your husband is the kind of man I will wish to have as husband.’

Mandy sighed. ‘All the same, one can never tell. Just monitor him and give me reports, okay?’

‘Alright, sister. I’ll do that. How’re Tomi and Tosin?’

‘They’re fine. They’re always asking after you.’

‘That’s good. My regards to them.’

‘Alright. Bye for now.’

‘Bye, sister.’

Mandy disconnected the line. She wondered if she had done the right thing. If your husband was going astray, was it giving him close
monitoring that would stop his infidelity? Would it not be better, as a believer in the efficacy of prayers to intensify one’s prayers? She
shrugged. But if it was true that he had a lady friend, why must he do that? Why was he going after other lady when he already legally had one?

Unconsciously, Mandy looked at herself. At thirty-six, and after having two child births, she still had a trim and lovely figure. She was still pretty
and desirable. Why couldn’t Ayo be content with what he had? Covetousness, that was the problem. She decided that she would intensify her prayers against the spirit of lustfulness in his life.

About seven p.m., he got to the Arrival Lounge of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. As he sauntered towards the exit door of the expansive hall, he saw Jane and a man approach him.

‘Good evening, sir. You’re welcome, sir,’ Jane greeted him.

He could not hide his surprise. ‘Jane, how’re you?’

‘Fine, sir. How was your flight?’

‘Fine. What are you doing here?’

‘I’ve been sent by the Permanent Secretary, Ms. Popo, to bring a driver and convey you to your residence, sir.’

Now, his surprise was total. ‘Ms. Popo went through all this trouble for me?’

‘It’s no trouble, sir. It’s all to make things convenient for you. You should not be jumping from one cab to another, sir.’

He nodded. ‘Well, that’s very considerate of her.’ He looked at the man that accompanied her curiously.

‘This is Mr. Ahmed, the driver.’

‘Good evening, sir,’ the man she had just introduced as Ahmed greeted and gave a slight bow.

‘Good evening.’

‘If you don’t mind, sir,’ Jane said and extended her hands towards his valise. He handed the bag to her.

‘This way, sir.’ She preceded him out of the hall, while Ahmed was on his heels. They went to the park where an official Peugeot 604 car was
parked. Jane opened the right back door for him. She then dropped the valise in the car and joined the back seat from the left side. The car slid
out of the park and joined the main road.

‘So, how is everything, Jane? I’ve not seen you or heard from you for a while.’

‘All is well, sir. It’s the job that has taken over my time.’

‘The job? The job shouldn’t stop you from at least calling, dear Jane.’

She smiled. ‘I apologize, Mr. Ariyo.’

‘By the way, how did you know I would be arriving at the time I arrived?’

‘It has become a routine, hasn’t it? We knew you traveled and would be getting back to Abuja Sunday afternoon or early evening. We’ve been
at the airport waiting since four o’clock.’

‘Wonderful,’ he said.

Because of the presence of the driver, he could not discuss much with her. Many minutes later, the car slid inside the compound of his residence.

She had obliged and that was that. Since then, the relationship had blossomed. Biyi had proved to be generous. Apart from the numerous designer wears, he got her a brand new Toyota car.

Nancy had hugged him and had told him he was the best lover in the world. He was always going on business trips, within the country, within the West Africa sub-region, and even intercontinentally.

There was a time he had taken her to Port Harcourt. They were there for almost a week. The same thing happened when they traveled to
Abuja and Abidjan. The next trip he would probably ask her to come along would be to Dubai.

She was having a good time. She had been savoring the relationship. Now, his wife was becoming a big stumbling block. No way, she would
not allow herself to be cowed.

Presently he was out of Lagos. Two days ago, he had informed her that he would be travelling to Jos, a city several hundreds of kilometers
away from Lagos. Nancy decided to call him.

'Hello my dear.' As usual, there was a boom in his over the line. Even from afar, one could discern his bohemian nature.

'Hello.' Her response was cool and distant.

'How are you? You don't sound excited.'

'I'm not. I'm not happy either.'

'What happened?'

'It's your wife. Why didn't you tell me you are married to a wrestling champion?'

'What d'you mean, a wrestling champion? What happened?'

She paused briefly. 'If you know what my eyes see today, you'll feel sorry for me. She trailed me to the shopping plaza at Maryland. As soon
as I came out after shopping, she accosted me. In a twinkle of an eye, she pounced on me. She slapped me and tore my top and bra. In full
public glare, your wife really embarrassed and ridiculed me.'

He was surprised. 'Unbelievable! You mean she did all that to you?'

'Yes. With a threat to do worse if I don't leave you alone.'

'Ehn, ehn. It's unbelievable that Funmi would do that.'

'She really spoilt my day today.'

'I'm sorry to hear that. Please just take everything cool. By tomorrow, I'll be back in Lagos. I promise you I'll do something about it.'

That was what she wanted to hear. 'Yes o. Please, do something.'

Funmi and her personal driver returned to her jeep, parked some few cars away from where Nancy had parked her car.

'That was good for her.' It was a monologue Funmi had to make to vindicate her actions. ' Next time, she will say no to him. Useless ashewo woman.'

She hissed as she sat at the back seat of the car.

Turo, the chauffeur, slid to the driver's seat and brought the engine to life. Her had learnt not to interfere in whatever the madam had set out to do.

'Where are we going now, madam?' There was a hint of timidity from the man.

Funmi sighed and hissed again. 'Did you see how she looked?'

She was still agitated and was yet to get Nancy's matter from her mind.

'The lady looked like kpanla fish. She's a stupid ashewo. I wish I had completely removed her bra to show the world the useless things she
had on her chest.'

Turo did not say anything. What could he say? He engaged the gear and slowly moved the car out of the complex.

'We're going back home.' She had made enough trouble for a day.

Turo nodded. 'Yes, madam.'

* * *

When Nancy got to her apartment at off Abiola crescent, Ikeja, she had to ensure that no one was outside the building before she ventured out
of the car. She didn't even take the things she had bought from the boot of the car. Those things could wait. She didn't want anyone to see her
torn top and quarter nudeness.

She went straight to her apartment. The warm interior welcomed her. She changed her underwear and the top. She had decided to keep
those clothing and to show Biyi how uncivil his wife was.
She regained some of her confidence after she had changed cloths. Her mind was busy as she replayed the nasty experience at the shopping

plaza in her mind. If Biyi's wife thought she could intimidate and bully her to stay off the man, then she was making a very big mistake.

Nancy had met him at a fashion show some months ago. She was there as a guest, just as he was. Biyi was a known person in Lagos social
scene. He had made marks in hotel and tourism industry, and Nancy had expressed delight at meeting him one on one during the event. She
had introduced herself as a blogger with an eye for the entertainment industry.

That was how they met. He got her number and promised to call. Indeed, he fulfilled his promise the following day. He had invited her for
lunch in a highbrow restaurant.

She had obliged and that was that. Since then, the relationship had blossomed. Biyi had proved to be generous. Apart from the numerous

Mandy only smiled. Then she pointed at the door.

‘The children may burst in anytime,’ she said.

‘Ah, that’s true.’ He quickly went to lock the door.

‘Now, let me see the wonderful things inside that sexy bra of yours.’

‘They’re things you’ve seen several times before.’

‘Yes. Yet, they’re things I can’t be tired of seeing and playing with.’ He came to remove the bra and to play with everything he could play with.
Unlike other weekends that he would go out on Saturday, he was indoors throughout today.

It was hours later, in the evening, when Mandy told him about the anonymous phone call.

‘So, who’s this Abuja babe that the caller was talking about? How many babes are you keeping in Abuja?’ she asked him.

‘The person that called did not mention her name?’

‘No,’ Mandy answered.

He sighed as his mind was busy. He was 99.9 per cent sure it was Ore that made the call.

‘The caller is only playing pranks,’ he said. ‘There’s no such thing as Abuja babe. I don’t have a girlfriend, or a lady friend over there. The
person is just rabble rousing.’

‘Are you sure, dear?’

He grinned. ‘Mandy, my darling, don’t you trust me again? Some agents of the devil just want to put an end to the love and peace in this house,
but the good Lord will not allow them.’

‘Amen,’ she said emphatically.

In his mind, he was angry at Ore. How could she do that? It was true that Juliet was impudent for picking her call and being saucy to her, but
Ore should not have become vindictive and shouldn’t have gone to the extent of calling his wife and telling her lurid tales. He was not happy
with her at all.

On Sunday, they all dressed up gaily to attend the church they normally attended. Mandy prayed for her family, especially her husband. She
prayed to God to remove covetousness from his eyes. Later that evening, he took a metro cab to the airport, although his wife volunteered to
drive him.

‘I don’t want to stress you, my dear,’ he told her.

He got to the airport on time to take the early evening flight to Abuja.

As soon as he left the house, Mandy put a call to Juliet, her sister.

She came to sit by the bedside, lifted his right thumb and before he knew it, used a razor she had brought to make small cut on the thumb.

‘Ouch! What are you doing?’

‘Sh-sh.’ She made a small cut on her own thumb. A trickle of blood had come out of the two fingers. She joined her thumb with his, such that
the blood mixed.

‘Now, swear to me that you’ll never have any other girlfriend again; that I’ll be your only girlfriend.’

‘This is serious, Juliet! Must we do this?’

‘Yes. Except you’re just deceiving me; except you want to use and dump me.’

‘Alright. Let’s do it.’

They did the swearing to the effect that they would always love each other, no matter what, and that apart from his wife, no other lady must
ever come between them. She sucked his thumb, while she made him to suck hers. The swearing was over. He sighed. For the second time
within four weeks, he had been made to swear to an oath. Goodness!

Juliet was very happy after the deed.

‘Now, you’re mine and I’m yours,’ she said gleefully.

He nodded. She climbed on the bed again and lay on his body.

‘How heavy am I?’

‘Feather weight.’

She pressed her body on his. He could feel all the contours – including the breasts, belly, hips, knees and the feet - of her petite body.

‘Still feather weight.’

‘Okay. I like my weight as it is.’

‘I like it too. It makes you potable.’

She planted her mouth on his.

On Saturday, by nine in the morning, he was set to leave the house. The driver conveyed him to the airport. His flight departed 10.10 a.m. and by 11.05, he was in Lagos.

He took a metro cab home. His children ran out to greet him as if they had not seen him in ages.

‘Daddy! Daddy!’ they chorused.

He was glad to see them too, happy to be re-united with his family.

He gave them short cakes and packs of Ribena drinks as his welcome gifts.

‘Daddy, we will come to Abuja one day to see you,’ Tosin said. ‘And we will come in a big jet.’

‘Yes, daddy,’ her brother concurred. ‘We will come to Abuja.’

‘Alright,’ he told them. ‘That will be no problem.’

Later, he was in the bedroom with his wife.

‘Mandy, my dear. I hope you’re not missing me so much.’

‘I am,’ she answered.

‘Sorry about that. I always terribly miss you too.’

Her mind went to the anonymous caller and the ‘Abuja lady’ and she wondered if indeed he missed her. But she decided not to mention the
issue for now.

‘Come over here, my dear.’ He spread his arms to her. She came to him and he hugged her.

‘Oh, my darling Mandy, it’s good to see you and hold you so passionately again.’ She smiled and he thought it was Juliet he saw. Like Mandy,
like Juliet, he thought. He kissed her passionately. Somehow, he decided he would be showing double portion of whatever affection he had for
Juliet, for his wife. He removed her blouse and stared at her bra.

‘Just see how delectable my darling is,’ he muttered.

Mandy only smiled. Then she pointed at the door.

‘The children may burst in anytime,’ she said.

‘Ah, that’s true.’ He quickly went to lock the door.

The woman's hold on Nancy slackened. That gave Nancy the leverage. Still on the defensive, she dashed inside the car, slammed the door shut and kicked the engine into life.

She reversed out of the park and gunned it away from the shopping complex. The woman was still shouting after her as she drove away.

Oh Lord! What an embarrassment! The woman tore her cloth and the top underwear! That was a big embarrassment! Nancy had never been so embarrassed before. That woman must be crazy. Really crazy!

She was on the defensive throughout the encounter. She chose to be. For a woman like that, it would be foolish to start an argument or a fight. She actually looked ready for any combat. How aggressive!

But how did the woman trace her to the shopping plaza? How did she come to know about her?

Truly, she was having an affair with Biyi Osho, the city guy with money to throw around. Nancy had been having a sizzling relationship with the man for over six months now, and there had been no problem.

Until now.

She never knew Biyi had an extremely jealous and cantankerous wife. And he never even hinted her.

Ops!

That plump woman was a terrible one. With a woman like that, Nancy reasoned, why would a man not seek desires outside?

Even as she watched Nancy hurriedly drive out of the parking space, Funmi was satisfied with herself. Surely she had given the lady the jolt of her life. It was good for her, Funmi decided. All these ladies that would not leave married men alone deserved whatever ill treatment they received.

Funmi and her personal driver returned to her jeep, parked some few cars away from where Nancy had parked her car.

'That was good for her.' It was a monologue Funmi had to make to vindicate her actions. ' Next time, she will say no to him. Useless ashewo
woman.'

She hissed as she sat at the back seat of the car.

‘Hi.’ He had already changed into pajamas and was lying on the bed.

She came to lie down by his side. He held her left hand.

‘What’re you thinking about?’ she asked.

He shrugged. ‘Nothing important’.

‘Are you thinking of her?’

He blinked rapidly. ‘Who?’

‘My sister, Mandy?’

She was very right: he was thinking about his wife.

‘Yes,’ he said simply.

‘You missed her so much?’

‘Well, a bit. And I miss the children.’ He smiled again and quickly added: ‘All the same, I’m glad to have you with me, Juliet.’

She smiled too. ‘Are you sure about that?’

‘Sure, Juliet.’ He rubbed her hand.

‘I love you,’ she said.

He sighed but said nothing.

‘Won’t you say something?’

He chuckled. ‘I don’t want to say what I have in mind?’

She was totally curious. ‘What do you have in mind?’

‘I think it’s better I don’t say it, baby girl.’

She climbed to sit on his tummy. The child’s play had started again. ‘You’ll have to tell me.’

‘What if I don’t?’

‘Then, I’ll not get down from here.’

He chuckled. His hands caressed her thighs.

She slightly shook her legs. ‘Hmn, hmn, I didn’t say you should do that. You’re under punishment for not saying what you were expected to
say.’

‘Sorry, ma,’ he said mockingly. His hands went to her waist.

‘Don’t touch my body,’ she said.

‘Are these ones part of your body?’ His hands went to her breasts.

She playfully slapped his hands and he removed them from where he had placed them.

‘Are they part of your own body?’ she asked rhetorically.

She stared into his eyes. ‘Tell me what you have in mind.’

‘Alright.’ He closed his eyes. ‘What I have in mind is if I should travel from Abuja to Lagos by flight, it’s just about an hour, but if I go by road,
I’ll spend over ten hours.’

She grinned and shook her head. ‘That’s not what you have in mind.’

‘How could you tell, dear lady?’

‘Because I know that’s not what was on your mind.’

‘Tell me, what’s on my mind, then.’

‘Okay, I’ll tell you. What reward will you give me if I tell you the truth?’

‘Reward?’

‘Yes, reward.’

He thought briefly. ‘I’ll buy one thousand naira recharge card for you.’

She shook her head. ‘Hmn, hmn, that’s not what I want.’

‘What do you want?’

She sighed. ‘This is the reward I want, and I want it right now: I don’t want you to have any other girlfriend.’

He was bemused. ‘I thought I’ve given my words on that.’

‘I want you to say it solemnly and seriously. Wait.’ She stood up from him and got down from the bed.

He was still bemused. ‘Where’re you going?’

‘Give me one minute. I’ll be back.’ She left the bedroom.

Now, what was she up to? He wondered and awaited her. A minute later, she was back.

(Many thanks for all your interests and comments. God bless you all. You are all welcome.)

The story continues ....

The plump woman shook her head. 'You're the one that needs help. You are the one to help yourself. I just came to warn you. I want to warn you to desist from going out with my husband.'

Nancy looked shocked. 'Who're you, and what're you talking about?'

'Don't you pretend with me.' The strange woman's voice had gone up. Still, it looked like she would gladly increase the tempo. 'I'm warning
you to stop your prostitution with Biyi. Why are you going out with him? Don't you know he is happily married? Look at you. You're just a
common prostitute! A LovePeddler! A useless LovePeddler!'

It was obvious the woman was ready for trouble. Nancy decided not say anything further. She closed the boot of the car and moved towards
the door.

The woman followed her. 'I've only come today to warn you.' The agitation in her voice was unmistakable. 'Next time, I won't be so nice with
you. You should be ashamed of yourself. Just look at you. What did he see in you self? What is special about you?'

Nancy remained mute. She opened the right , front door of the car.

'Just look at her! Shameless idiot! Can't you look for your own man?!'

The woman grabbed Nancy's top before she could enter the car and tore it. Her movements were as swift as a combatant. Not satisfied, she
grabbed the strap of Nancy's bra and pulled.

Nancy was shocked, to say the least. With her left hand, she held on to her bra while the right hand fended off any further attack.

'What! Are you crazy? What is this?' Nancy was perplexed. Her disbelief was without bound.

'You're the one that is crazy.' Now, the woman was bawling. 'Let us see those yeye things you have on your chest! Those tiny things you call
breasts!'

She was really ready to create a scene. The uniformed man that had accompanied her did not say or do anything. He was just looking on as
if he was there as an observer.

Two or three people moved close to them to see what was going on.

'Just look at her!' The woman continued to yell. 'Useless lady. Go and look for your own man. Stop running after married men.'

One of the security men manning the complex was moving towards them fast.

'Madam, what is the problem?' The security man looked ruffled as if the scene was abominable.

''It is this useless lady.' The plump woman's reply was swift. 'This ashewo lady.'

The woman tugged at the strap more and succeeded in pulling the left cup off, but Nancy was able to pull the clothing back fast to cover her
chest.

'Just look at her! See her useless tits!' The aggressor was gleeful.

'Madam, leave me o. Ah, what kind of nonsense is this?' Nancy wouldn't have anticipated the great embarrassment, even in her dream. She
had heard of things like this before. In Lagos, such an incident was not unheard of. But she couldn't have imagined that she would be at the
receiving end.

The few people around did not make any move to broker peace, save for the security guy.

As a matter of fact, the last action was to their delight. They looked on as if they were watching a premiere from Nollywood, Nigeria's version
of Hollywood.

'No, you can't do that, madam.' There was concern and urgency in the tone of the security man. He held the aggressor and tried to restrain
her from further attack.

The woman's hold on Nancy slackened. That gave Nancy the leverage. Still on the defensive, she dashed inside the car, slammed the door
shut and kicked the engine into life.

She reversed out of the park and gunned the car away from the shopping complex. The woman was still shouting after her as she drove away.

CAPTIVES OF LUST

Funmi is a wife of a rich business mogul. She has everything going on well in her life. The appearance of Nancy on the scene threatens to sweep Funmi’s husband away and to destroy everything Funmi has labored for. She will not take this. She is prepared to go to any length to fight for what she believes is hers, including street fighting.
However, the fight goes beyond the physical, and thankfully, she soon realizes this. As for the man, he too realizes that the affair with the other lady is nothing other than an experience of captivity.

Toyin Olorunsola

The big store had assorted goods - both local and exotic. Nancy was happy she had more than enough options to make. She selected the items she had planned to buy. She must not forget the perfumes and wines.

As it was Saturday morning, the place was bristling with customers. The weather was good and was an encouraging factor to outdoor activities. There was no better time for shopping, too.

She went to the counter to pay for her items. She would be paying through the POS today. The lady that took the payments smiled
perfunctorily at her. Nancy smiled back. A small queue was already forming behind her. She took her two bags containing her purchases and
moved to the exit.

Another smile awaited her at the exit door. In addition, the security attendant touched the peak of his cap in salutation. His crisp uniform
reminded her of military officers. Nancy waved and moved on.

It was just eleven in the morning, but the sun had come out in full force. African sun is never shy about radiance. It was already blazing like
one eager to display its sheeny splendor. Nancy put on her sunglasses and moved briskly to her car in the lot.

She opened the boot of the Toyota. The car still looked and smelled new. She became its proud owner some months back, when it was gifted
by someone close to her heart. Nancy had been glad about the generous gesture. Was there a lady that would not be?

She was still arranging the bags in the booth when a hand tapped her shoulders from behind. She turned to look.

'Are you not Nancy?' The woman's voice was imperative. The expression was more assertive than inquisitive. Behind her was a man who
dressed like a chauffeur.

She was on the plump side and looked like someone who had a good life and who would stop at nothing to get what she desired. She was in
t-shirt and jeans trousers, which appeared tight for her voluptuous thighs.

There was something impetuous about the way she talked.

'Yes. Can I help you?' Nancy's answer was short and expectant.

The plump woman shook her head. 'You're the one that needs help. You are the one to help yourself. I just came to warn you. I want to warn
you to desist from going out with my husband.'

Nancy looked shocked. 'Who're you, and what're you talking about?'

'Don't you pretend with me.' The strange woman's voice had gone up. Still, it looked like she would gladly increase the tempo. 'I'm warning

Ayo was amazed. He was not so amazed at Juliet’s impudence of picking his call right in his presence. He was amazed that despite the impudence, he did nothing about it.

Juliet was all smiles as she dropped the phone on the stool. ‘That should settle it. I hope she never calls again.’

He could not find a word to say. A whole Ayo could not say anything!

‘Are you angry with me?’ she asked.

He tried a grin. ‘No.’

‘Why are you standing away from your baby girl?’

He grinned again and moved to sit by her side on the bed, wrapping her shoulders with his right hand. She encircled his waist with her hands,
placing her head on his right shoulder.

‘Are you mad at me?’ she asked again.

He smiled. ‘Oh, no,’ he found himself saying. ‘You have done the right thing, my dear.’ He caressed her back and kissed her cheek.

Ore could not believe her ears. So, this was it. This was how Ayo would use and dump her, just like that! Because he was now a man on the rise and living in Abuja, he had allowed himself to be swayed by an Abuja babe. She would not just fold her hands and allow herself to be treated so disdainfully like that. She knew the lady she had talked to couldn’t be more beautiful than she was, for she knew that she, Ore was a paragon of beauty. Being a runner up in the Miss Campus beauty competition was not a fluke. She was certainly beautiful.

So, why was he still going out with another lady? It must be greed. Ayo must be lustful and greedy. Some men were like that. They would
never be content with a woman. He was certainly one of such men. But Ore would not just allow the matter to go just like that. She decided she
would teach Ayo a lesson.

Mandy was having a tough time explaining to the children that their daddy would not be coming home that Friday.

‘He will surely come tomorrow morning,’ she said.

‘Let’s go to Abuja to go and meet him,’ Tosin, the four-year old second child said.

‘But mummy, why is he not coming today?’ Tomi asked.

‘It’s his work,’ Mandy tried to explain.

‘Let’s go and meet him,’ Tosin insisted, looking determined.

‘We can’t meet him, joo,’ her brother said. ‘Don’t you know Abuja is far?’

‘We’ll take a jet, or a rocket,’ Tosin said.

Her mother could not help smiling at her innocence. ‘There will be no need for that. Tomorrow is just few hours to go. He will be around
tomorrow.’

Just then, her phone rang from the center table. Tosin rushed to pick the phone and to hand it to her mother. The caller was unknown.

‘Hello, good evening.’

‘Good evening, madam,’ the caller said. It was a female voice.

‘Who’s on the line, please?’

‘I have vital information for you, madam,’ the caller said. ‘Right now, your husband is with a lady in Abuja. He’s having an affair with her.’

‘What? Who are you? Where …?’

The line had been disengaged. Mandy tried to call the number back, but the service provider said the number could not be reached. She mused
on the caller. Who was she and why had she called? Could the caller be playing prank, or was it a blackmailer on the prowl? But could it be true
that her husband was indeed with a lady?

There was no point deceiving herself that Ayo, her husband, was capable of being unfaithful. He tried to be loving and caring, but one could not
really tell in a matter like this. As a strong believer, she believed she must always be supporting him in prayers. The nature of his job made him
to be exposed to many people and many things. She had always believed God would take care of things.

She decided she would ask him about the ‘Abuja lady’ when he came around. For now, she let things lie low.

They took their dinner, each sitting at his/her favorite sitting chair. It was few minutes to eight and he was still in Abuja, courtesy of Juliet. They savored their meal and thereafter went to the living room to watch the television. They hardly talked to each other, but even then, their silence conveyed a lot of meanings. They were bound together in secret love affair. It was a conspiracy they hoped to keep from public view, even from the domestic servants. So, while they were in the sitting-room, they knew they did not have to say much. They would have more than enough time in the confine and privacy of his bedroom to explicitly express themselves.

They watched the movies till about midnight. He stood up to retire to his bedroom. Expectedly, few minutes after he was there, Juliet came to
join him.

‘Hello,’ she greeted, smiling.

He was stupefied. ‘What a minute, are you saying you called her?’

‘Yes, I did.’

He opened his mouth. ‘With my phone?’

‘Yes.’ She looked at him straight in the eyes. Again, his natural response would have been serious indignation. How dare she do that? How could
she pick his phone, go through his privacy and call a lady whose number was on the phone?

He breathed in and out fast. He was surprised that he felt no anger for her.

‘I told her to back off; that I’m your sweet-heart, your girlfriend,’ she continued very calmly. ‘And that she should get herself another
boyfriend.’

He got to his feet. ‘Oh, God. You said all that?’

She was studying him. He paced briefly around the room.

‘Why are you behaving as if you hate me?’ she asked.

He was surprised again. ‘Hate you? What are you talking about?’

‘Because you look very angry.’

He tried to calm down. ‘I was just wondering at your audacity.’

‘If you really like me, you won’t behave like that.’

He was now on the defensive. Juliet had pushed him on the defense line.

‘Of course I like you, Juliet.’

‘I don’t want you to have any other girlfriend. If you must be unfaithful to my sister, I must be the only option.’

He sighed deeply. Now, she was telling him that he was unfaithful. ‘Well, I guess faithfulness would have been better in a case like this.’

His phone rang. Ore was calling again. Juliet picked it and answered it.

‘Yes, what do you want again?’

At the other end, Ore was perplexed. ‘Please, I’ll like to speak with him. Is he there?’

‘Yes, he’s here,’ Juliet replied slowly. ‘But he doesn’t want to speak with you.’

‘That can’t be,’ Ore said almost in frustration. ‘Please, give him the phone.’

‘What nonsense is all this?’ Juliet’s tone rose up. ‘He is not interested in you again and does not want to talk to you! Can’t you understand
simple English? Don’t call him again. Bye-bye!’

With that, Juliet terminated the conversation.

Ayo was amazed. He was not so amazed at Juliet’s impudence of picking his call right in his presence. He was amazed that despite the
impudence, he did nothing about it.

Juliet was all smiles as she dropped the phone on the stool. ‘That should settle it. I hope she never calls again.’

As soon as he stepped out of the bedroom, Juliet picked his phone to check who called the other time. She noted the person stored as Ore and the frequency of her calls. She would challenge him on that.

‘Madam, what a surprise! It’s good to see you,’ Ayo greeted the guest in his sitting-room.

The woman looked at him and smiled warmly. ‘How d’you do, Mr. Ariyo?’

‘Fine, madam. It’s an honor to have you here.’

‘The pleasure is mine.’

He sat on a sofa not too far from her. ‘What can I offer you, madam?’

She smiled and shook her head. ‘Perhaps, another time. I was just passing in the neighborhood and I decided to come and say hello.’

‘Oh, very kind of you ma’am.’

It was indeed a surprise to have her in his residence. She had never visited before and had not given an inkling to her coming.

‘How’re you finding this your environment?’ she wanted to know.

‘Fine. So far so good.’

She nodded. ‘By the end of the month, you’ll be given your real official residence. Just like I said, this is just a stop-gap measure.’

‘Yes, ma’am.’

They chatted a bit more and she stood up. ‘I’ll be on my way,’ she said.

He stood up too. ‘Thank you very much for coming.’

He accompanied her out to her car. He waved at her as she was driven off, still wondering at her surprise visit. He went back to the house. Juliet was still holed up in his bed-room.

She smiled up at him when he re-entered the room.

‘How’s your visitor?’ she asked.

‘She’s gone.’

‘Is she your woman friend?’

He laughed shortly. ‘Come on, Juliet. She’s the Permanent Secretary of my Ministry.’

He sat by her side on the bed and wrapped his right hand on her shoulders.

‘Are you sure she is not your woman friend?’

‘No, she’s not. I don’t have a woman friend.’

‘What about Ore?’

He was surprised she mentioned that name. ‘Who?’

‘Ore. Who’s she to you?’

‘How did you know that name?’

She pointed at his phone. ‘She was the one calling you the other time.’
His natural reaction would have been to express indignation at her going through his phone without his permission. But he was not angry. With
Juliet, so many things were changing.

He grinned. ‘She’s just a woman friend.’

‘I don’t think so.’

He was curious. ‘And what makes you not to think so?’

‘From what she told me.’

He was stupefied. ‘What a minute, are you saying you called her?’

‘Yes, I did.’

He opened his mouth. ‘With my phone?’

‘Yes.’ She looked at him straight in the eyes.

‘Yes, sir.’

‘Who did she say wanted to see you?’ Juliet asked in curiosity.

He went to the bathroom to take a quick shower and changed clothes.

‘You can’t leave me alone in this house,’ she said.

‘That’s why I said you should come along.’

‘I don’t want to go to Lagos, yet.’

He paused to stare at her. ‘You have to pick one.’

‘Wait till tomorrow before you travel.’

‘What? Why?’

‘Stay with me.’

He shook his head. ‘Your sister is already expecting me.’

‘Call her and tell her you’ll be coming tomorrow.’

Her words, surprisingly had a big hold on him. He pandered. She came to him and held him in that passionate way. He had always been a
strong-willed person. But with Juliet, he was becoming pliant. To her, of course.

‘Alright,’ he said. ‘I’ll call her and tell her to expect me tomorrow.’

‘Oh, thank you. You’re such a darling.’ And she kissed him briefly again.

He dialed the number of his wife. ‘How’re you, Mandy, darling?’

‘Hello, dear. How’re you?’

‘I’m fine. Just want to tell you I won’t be able to come down to Lagos today.’

‘What happened? Hope no problem?’

‘No. It’s the work,’ he lied. ‘Don’t worry, I’ll be in Lagos unfailingly tomorrow morning.’

‘Ops, the children will be disappointed. Anyway, it’s okay. See you tomorrow morning, then.’

‘Please explain to them why daddy will not be making it tonight. Bye.’ He disconnected the line.

Juliet had been studying him with amused smile.

‘Are you pleased now?’ he asked her.

She came to hug him. ‘I just want to be with you,’ she said.

‘It’s alright.’ He relaxed and sat on the bed. Just then, there was a knock on the door.

‘Who’s it?’ he called out.

‘I want to know if I should come in to carry your bag,’ the house maid said.

‘Don’t worry,’ he replied. ‘I’m not traveling again today.’

There was a slight pause. ‘Alright, sir,’ the maid said and left.

‘Thanks for staying till tomorrow,’ Juliet said.

‘It’s okay. Anything for my Juliet.’

She came to sit on his laps. He knew he was playing a dangerous game with her, but seemed helpless about it. Come to think of it, the game
seemed to be getting more intriguing and sweeter.

‘So, have you got your primary posting now?’ he asked.

‘Yes. Ministry of Youth and Culture. I’ll report there on Monday.’

‘Oh that’s good.’ He wrapped his right hand round her. His phone rang and he checked the caller. Ore was on the line. He let the phone to ring
on and on.

‘Won’t you answer your call?’ Juliet asked.

He shook his head. ‘It’s not important.’ After a while, Ore stopped calling. He put the phone on a stool.

‘What will you like to eat tonight?’ she asked.

He smiled. ‘I’ll tell the cook to prepare amala and ewedu soup.’

‘I can prepare it.’

He rubbed her back. ‘Oh, no. Why bother yourself when the cook is there? Let her do her work.’

There was another knock at the door.

‘Yes, who is it?’

‘Munirat, sir,’ the house maid said. ‘You have a visitor, sir.’

‘Who?’

‘She said she be Perm. Sec., sir.’

He was surprised to hear that. The Perm. Sec. in his house? ‘Alright, I’m coming.’

He went to the bedroom. They could take the six o’clock flight to Lagos. That meant they had only a couple of hours to set out. Juliet soon came to meet him in the bedroom, where he was sorting out what he would be traveling with.

‘Hello, darling,’ she greeted.

He turned to look at her. She came over to give him a short kiss.

‘I was supposed to tell you before now that I would be travelling to Lagos today. You can come along.’

‘Lagos?’ she looked surprised. ‘Me, I’m not ready to travel to Lagos o. Not today.’

‘No problem. You can stay here. The servants will take care of you.’ He continued with what he was he was doing.

She came from his behind to hold him snuggly by the waist. ‘I miss you,’ she cooed.

He anxiously checked his watch. He must not miss the flight. ‘I mustn’t miss the flight,’ he said.

‘So, you want to leave me alone here? That’s not fair.’

‘Let’s travel together,’ he pointed out.

‘No, I don’t want to go to Lagos, yet.’

‘Well, no problem. I’ll send your regards to your sister. I’ll be back Sunday evening.’

‘Hmn.’ She came to face him and hold him across the waist. Her mouth went to his and got stuck there. After several seconds, he wanted to
disengage, but she would not let him. His mind was busy. Perhaps, if he hurried up, he might still make the flight. He undressed her and quickly
undressed himself. He brought the latex rubber protector out. He might as well use the condom. Then, he made passion-filled love to her.
Several minutes later, he was spent.

He gave her some money before he went to the office. Once at work, he threw himself into the job and tried to forget everything about Juliet.

He had not heard from Jane too. All well and good. Towards noon, Juliet sent a message to her: ‘I’m missing you already.’ He decided to call her.

‘Hello, how is the camp?’ he asked.

‘I miss you,’ she replied.

‘Well, the camp will soon be over.’

‘Yes, thank God for that.’

‘What time will you be finishing your programme on Friday so I can send the driver to come and convey you back home?’

‘I think by 1.00 p.m., the whole thing should be over.’

‘Good, I will send him.’

‘Many thanks, A.Y.’

‘Alright. See you.’

He cut the line. Just then, he remembered he was supposed to travel that Friday to Lagos. No problem, he and Juliet might as well travel together.

That Friday afternoon, he closed as soon as the driver sent to convey Juliet returned to the office, which was about four o’clock. When he got
home, he met her loitering in bum short and spaghetti top in the sitting-room. Again, the presence of some domestic servants prevented any
ostentatious display of affection.

‘Welcome, uncle,’ she greeted.

‘How d’you do, Juliet?’

‘Fine.’
