The doctor was still nonplussed. 'Well, sir. If you say so.'

Funmi packed his things in the leather bag. It was time to go home. After over a week in the hospital, Biyi was to be discharged that very hour through divine intervention.

She was very excited just as she marveled at what had happened. It was a proof that indeed miracles still worked. It was a proof that with faith, you could please God and get what you desired from him.

Biyi was certainly amazed by the turn of events. He had felt cold all over his body at a point after the prayers. Then warmth came. He felt puff of gas leaving his body. It was then that he also felt the fever was receding. It wasn't an easy thing to describe, for it was amazing. There and then, Biyi resolved to renew his relationship with God and to serve him fervently for the rest of his life.

Doris, for the past few days, had been behaving funny. It wasn't really funny to Ade, but that was the way he wanted to see it for now. Since that Saturday she said she was not feeling well, she had been behaving strangely to him.

It was more like she was giving him the cold shoulders. Ade could not understand why she was behaving like that. When he had asked her if anything was the matter, she had replied in the negative. Even when he had asked her how she was feeling after the purported sickness, she
had answered that nothing was wrong.

She didn't call him again and had refused to come to his house since the sad episode. Surely, he was not making any mistake in his belief that something must be wrong somewhere.

This afternoon, he had decided to confront her and make her say what was wrong. There was no way the relationship would be going on like this.

After she had given the reports of the marketing activities of the day, he motioned her to remain on her seat.

'These past few days, I don't really know what is happening.' He stared at her, but she avoided his face. 'Why have you been avoiding me? Above all, why have you been so cold towards me? What is the problem? What have I done wrong?'

'You have done nothing wrong.' Her reply was concise and almost curt.

'So, why're you avoiding me? Why have you been so cold to me, lately?'

She looked at every other place but his eyes. 'I just believe I need a space.'

He looked surprised. 'A space for what? Are we not just starting a relationship? Is there any problem with the relationship? Have I in any way offended you?'

It took her some time to answer. He had to repeat the question.

'I'm no longer so sure about the relationship.' She wanted to be blunt but not brutal about it. 'I need a space to think things over and to really decide.'

He didn't find her posturing funny. What space, and what was there to decide after she had already given him the nod? He was confused by the whole thing. How could she make a 'u-turn' like that; just like that?

She did not even take a ride in his car again. Ade was as confused as he was disappointed. She was definitely giving him the 'marching order.'

He had lost weight but there were indication that he would soon recover. That evening, Biyi was delighted that his appetite had fully come back. He ate the sumptuous meal he was given to his fullest.

'Are you enjoying the meal?' Funmi asked. Of course, it was obvious he was enjoying it.

'You bet, my dear. It's as if I've not eaten good food in ages.'

After the meal, he and his wife retired to his bedroom. He was glad to be back in his house and to be hale and hearty again.

He switched on the t.v and put the channel on an international news channel. His wife sat on the sofa and he went to sit by her side.

He wrapped his left hand around her. It was like years ago when the affection between them was sparkling. Were the old days back? Would things continue like this? Funmi prayed and hoped so.

'My darling wife.' He playfully tapped her right shoulder. Let me begin by appreciating all you have done. During these last few days, you have been wonderful and I really appreciate that.'

'I've only played the role I should play.' She looked at him modestly. 'As your wife, I have to play that supportive role.'

He nodded. 'All the same, you played and still play the role well. I do really appreciate that. I must also use this opportunity to apologize for all
the shortcomings I have displayed in the relationship over the years, especially the recent one concerning the lady you encountered at the shopping plaza.'

She listened without saying a word.

'I must apologize to you.' His tone became passionate. 'Forgive me for the transgressions. I want to assure you that it won't happen again.'

She turned to stare at him. 'You must be careful about making promises, my dear. Don't make a promise you can't keep.'

He nodded. 'I know. A promise is a debt. I'm very determined this time around to keep my promise. By the power of almighty God, I will keep to my words henceforth. I can clearly see the folly in not being faithful. Above all, I've seen the foolishness in not reckoning with God and not obeying his words.'

She nodded in agreement.

Johnson shook his head emphatically. 'No, I'm not satisfied with being your friend only. Neither am I satisfied with just sleeping with you. I want you to be my wife.'

'Seriously?' Her brows went up.

'Oh my God. Look at me.' He touched his chest. 'I'm forty-five years old. I have three kids. I lost my wife last year. I want to marry again and
I've met the one my heart desires. Do I still sound like a joker?'

She relaxed her countenance. 'Well, I didn't know you are so serious about it.'

'Yes, I'm serious. Think over it. Looking at you, I believe you will be a bosom mate for me.'

Sam called his sister. 'Can I come around to pray for him and to use special anointing oil?'

'Of course you can come around.' She didn't mince words. 'By five this evening, we'll be moving him to the teaching hospital. If you can be here
before then, that will be good.'

'Yes, I'll be there on time.'

Funmi told her husband about Sam's intention.

'I hope you don't mind.' She looked hopefully at him.

'Of course, let him come around. Let the distant prayers he has been making combine with the close prayers.'

She was glad he viewed the issue that way and approved the proposition. Several minutes later, Sam and a Minister from his church came to
the hospital. Funmi accompanied them to Biyi's bedside.

They started with songs of praise to almighty God and soon went into serious prayers. They prayed to God to destroy all the the schemes of
the enemies over his life and the lives of his family members.

When the prayers were over, they sang two choruses to thank God in faith for all that he would do.

'It's well, sir.' Sam turned to Biyi. He was full of smiles as he touched the latter's forehead with the anointing oil.

Biyi looked relaxed. 'Thank you, Pastor.'

'God has taken complete control.' Sam was confident. 'It is well.'

'Thank you very much, Sam. God bless you.' Biyi nodded in agreement.

'Sam, I appreciate all you have been doing,' Funmi put in.

'It's no problem.' Sam was full of modestly. 'To God be the glory.' Sam soon left with the Minister he had come with.

Doctor Olufemi came in to update Biyi's medical records. He also started to write a referral letter that Biyi would take to the teaching hospital.

'I don't think I need to go to any hospital again,' Biyi said.

Olufemi turned to look at him. 'What's the problem, sir?'

'There's no problem.' Biyi rose from his lying position. He got up from the bed, stretched his legs and walked around the room like someone
trying to ascertain if indeed he was fit.

'I don't feel any fever or dizziness any more. I'm ok.' Biyi was certainly in his right mind. He stretched his two legs and nodded assuredly to the
doctor.

At that point, Funmi came in. She could see that her husband was full of smiles.

'I've recovered.' He turned to her. There was excitement all over him. 'It's a miracle. I can't feel any fever, weakness or dizziness again. I'm
okay.'

Funmi came to hug him and then looked at him in wonderment. 'Really, darling? Are you sure you're okay?'

'Of course, I am.' There was certainty about him. 'I'm very sure I'm ok.'

Funmi hugged him again. 'Oh, glory be to God in highest! Thank you Jesus. Thank you, Holy Spirit.'

Dr. Olufemi was confounded. He was still holding the pen he was using to write the medical notes and he wasn't sure if he should continue to
write or stop.

Biyi came to his rescue. 'Thank you, doctor but I don't need that note anymore. Believe me, I'm as fit as a fiddle.'
The doctor was still nonplussed. 'Well, sir. If you say so.'

Funmi packed his things in the leather bag. It was time to go home. After over a week in the hospital, Biyi was to be discharged that very hour
through divine intervention.

Nancy was perplexed that she could not get beyond that point. She was becoming frustrated. This was not what she had envisaged. The last time she would have been with Biyi was when things started to go upside down. How come it was when she expected something much better from him that things started getting bad. She could not and would not keep things to herself. She would have to call the prophet and let him know all that was happening.

She called his number. 'Good day, holy one.'

'Good day, my daughter, Nancy. How are you today?'

'I'm certain I'm not fine.' Her tone was flat.

'Oh dear, what could be the problem?'

'The thing I came to you to do the other time, I've not seen the result. I expect that by now, the effects will be significant. I've not seen him
since that day. He said he was not feeling well. We were still able to talk, but later, anytime I try to reach him, the service would say the number
was unreachable.

'When I went to his office, what I was told is that he's getting better. But, I'm yet to see him or hear from him. Man of God, please what's
happening? Why are things like this? This is not the way things should be, right? Why are things like this?'

The man at other line made a long pause.

He grunted. 'I can tell you that all which you're experiencing is a temporary thing. It's just for a short while. His soul is in hibernation. By the time he recovers and bounces back, you will get the kind of love and affection you've never got before.'

'Really? Will all these happen, holy one?'

'Do not doubt the power of the living one.' The prophet's voice went up. 'Don't you dare to doubt any word spoken by the messenger of the
most high.'

'I'm sorry, holy one. I didn't mean to be so discourteous.'

There was another pause. 'It's okay. Now, don't you worry about anything. Just exercise a little patience. You'll be amazed by the turn of
things soonest.'

Nancy's cheeks twisted into a forced smile. 'Thank you, holy one. Thank you.'

A week after Biyi was admitted to the hospital, there was still no improvement. Several tests had been done and none showed any malaise. Yet, the dizziness, weakness and feverishness would not go. The doctor was considering referring him to a specialist or teaching hospital. Biyi thought
of flying abroad for further treatment if the situation would not be alleviated.

Funmi was confused. She had concluded the seven-day fasting and prayer program recommended by her brother, Pastor Sam. All the while, she had been assured that all would be well. Why were things still in the doldrums? Why were things the opposite of being well?

In her perplexity, Funmi called Sam again.

'Biyi's condition is not getting better.' There was no doubt that she was at tether's end. 'The doctor is thinking of transferring him to a
teaching hospital. I'm confused.'

'There's no need to be confused, my sister' He made his voice sound in an assuring manner. 'He will come out a stronger and a better man. Continue with your prayers over there. I'm not relenting here, either. God is in control. All will end well.'

'Thank you, Sam.'

Funmi was seriously beginning to appreciate her brother. Anytime he talked to her, she would feel like a burden was being taken off from her shoulders. His words always had that therapeutic effect on her.

Later when she met with her husband in his special room in the hospital, it was her turn to give him words of inspiration and encouragement.

'We'll go to the teaching hospital the doctor refers us to,' she told Biyi. 'I'm sure there'll be no need flying you abroad. God will take total
control. Don't worry, my dear. You'll soon get over the malaise.'

Biyi was surprised she could express so much faith like this. He also noted the way she stood by him. One more thing: her expressions of faith,
hope and optimism were becoming infectious. He was not only buoyed up by them, but was actually finding himself mimicking those expressions in his mind.

Now, Biyi knew it: Funmi was a wonderful wife.

Doris was in the office of Johnson Dudu to regularize the insurance forms and other related documents. Johnson's personal secretary was also there. As soon as the documentation was completed, the secretary returned to her office.

'There's something much more important than these documents that I want to discuss with you.' Johnson smiled at her, now that they were alone.

'What could that be?' Doris had an idea but she wanted him to spell it out.

'I want to establish a permanent relationship with you. It's not just about meeting you in the club or taking you to a restaurant. I want to have
you with me completely.'

Doris was right about the inkling she had, but feigned ignorance. 'I don't understand what you mean.'

Johnson smiled. 'What I'm saying is simple. I want you to replace my late wife. I want to marry you.'

Doris stared at him, and pretended to be wide-eyed. 'Are you not satisfied that we are friends?'

Johnson shook his head emphatically. 'No, I'm not satisfied with being your friend only. Neither am I satisfied with just sleeping with you. I want
you to be my wife.'

'Seriously?' Her brows went up.

'Oh my God. Look at me.' He touched his chest. 'I'm forty-five years old. I have three kids. I lost my wife last year. I want to marry again and
I've met the one my heart desires. Do I still sound like a joker?'

'Yes, I'm serious. Think over it. Looking at you, I believe you will be a bosom mate for me.'

Paul came to visit her in her house. He noticed the modesty of the place. He wanted to get her some furniture but decided against it. He argued that since she would soon be joining him at his place in matrimony, then there would be no need for that.

Doris was expected in Ade's house that Saturday morning. She had told him that she would be in his place by ten in the morning.

But there was a snag. During the week, she had been to see the Managing Director of an oil marketing company in the course of her official
task. The MD, a man in his mid-forties, had responded favorably to the insurance policies she came to market. No only that, he found Doris interesting and fascinating. He said she reminded him of his late wife. He had requested for a date with her. She was expected to meet him that very Saturday at the posh Ikoyi West Polo Club. The time to meet was twelve noon.

This had put Doris in great dilemma. If she should visit Ade by ten as the two of them had agreed, she would miss the date with the other man.

Now, she didn't want to miss the Ikoyi rendezvous. An artful idea came to her mind. It was just few minutes to nine in the morning. She picked up her telephone and called Ade.

'Hello?'

'Hello. Are you on your way already?' There was eagerness and expectation in his voice.

'No o. I...I want to let you know that I am not feeling well. I .. I'm sorry I won't be able to make it today.'. She had used a tone that
portrayed someone that was seriously ill. She grunted for effects.

Ade was taken in by the gimmick. 'I'm so sorry to hear that.' He totally felt concerned. 'But you were hale yesterday. Well, it can happen to
anyone. Sorry once again. Is there anything I can do? Do you want me to come over there?'

'No o. Don't worry. I'll be okay. Sorry I couldn't make it.'

'Oh, it's alright. The important thing is that you should take good care of yourself. Treat yourself and get well.'

'Thank you. Good bye.'

'I'll be calling you later, my dear. Take good care of yourself.'

Doris burst out laughing as soon as she disconnected the line. So, he could be so gullible like that!

When it was few minutes to ten she dressed up for her date. It wasn't much of dressing: she was in spaghetti top and jeans trousers. She
applied moderate make up. One thing that was certain was even without makeup, she was beautiful.

She went to Ojota bus stop and joined the queue for the BRT bus to Obalende/ CMS. From there she would take a cab to the club at Ikoyi.
Being a Saturday, the traffic was quite light.

She got to the entrance few minutes to twelve noon. There were many exotic cars parked on the lot. She couldn't tell if he was around
already so she decided to call his number.

'I'm on my way and I'll soon be there.' His was very lively. 'Go inside and tell them you're my guest.'

She was admitted to the lounging hall the moment she mentioned his name. She sat down to watch the activities around. It was a large room.
There was a part with seats and center tables where people relaxed with drinks. There was another part with a billiard table where some people played. A very large flat screen also beamed television broadcasts.

About ten minutes after noon, Doris could see the man she was waiting for as he entered the lounging hall and looked around expectantly
around. She waved at him. He smiled at her and moved over to where she sat.

'I'm very sorry for keeping you waiting.' There was an apologetic grin on his face. 'How're you?'

Doris smiled back. 'I'm fine.'

He looked at the empty table in her front. 'Oh, I can see that you're not taking anything, yet. Let me order for drinks. What will you have?'

He sat down beside her. Johnson was always like that; always keen about whatever he had set out to do.

Nancy was getting worried about the fact that Biyi had remained incommunicado. She had been trying to reach him on his lines now without success. The service provider kept saying the numbers she was 'trying to reach' were switched off.

She had even taken the step of visiting him in his office. She met with Tony his P.A.

'What is happening to him?' It was more like she demanded to know. 'I've been trying his lines in the last few days to no avail. He said he
wasn't feeling well, how is he now? I'm completely in the dark. Where's he - at home or in a hospital? How could I reach him?'

Tony had smiled and tried to assuage her frayed nerves. 'He's getting better. All I can say is that he is getting better. All will be well.'

She was not content with that assurance. 'How can I reach him or get to him?'

'I'm sorry I can't tell you any other thing without his authorization.'

Nancy was perplexed that she could not get beyond that point. She was becoming frustrated. This was not what she had envisaged. The last
time she would have been with Biyi was when things started to go upside down. How come it was when she expected something much better from him that things started getting bad. She could not and would not keep things to herself. She would have to call the prophet and let him know all that was happening.

The line was disconnected. So, what she thought was mere tiredness was actually serious.

But why now? Since she had been dating him, she had not for once heard that he was indisposed. Why must it be now that she was expecting serious love overtures from him?

The second morning after the illness started, things had not improved. The dizziness and feverishness continued. Dr. Olufemi decided they had to do some tests. He took some blood samples and ran some tests. Some hours later, they should be able to know exactly what the problem was.

Besides, Biyi now ran temperature. His blood pressure also shot up.

'I think it's better we admit you, sir.' The doctor tried to smile in order not to alarm his patient.

Biyi and his wife briefly looked at each other.

'Is it as serious as that?' Funmi looked shaken.

'The admission is better so that we can give him closer monitoring and better treatment.'

'Well, that will be okay. If I have to be admitted, no qualms.' Biyi tried allay the fear of his wife by smiling.

Funmi nodded. She soon went to pack some clothes and toiletry he would need. Leke was on hand to drive him to Dr. Olufemi's hospital.
Contrary to what Biyi ever envisaged, he became an in-patient in Olufemi's hospital.

After leaving him in the hospital, Funmi called her brother.

'Biyi is not feeling well,' she said. 'For about two days now, he's indisposed. He has just been admitted in a private hospital just now.'

'Sorry about that, sister. But don't worry. He'll soon get over it. This is the challenge I told you about. Keep fasting and praying. I know all is
well.'

'Thank you, Sam.'

'It is well, my sister. All is well.'

Nancy tried to call him again but none of his numbers would go through. She expected him to be hale and hearty by now. She expected that he would have fully recovered and be back on his feet. What was happening to him? Why couldn't she reach out to him?

She would have to keep trying his numbers. She also had to keep believing that the Prophet's promise that Biyi would give here allure had not taken effect. If it had, nothing - not even illness - could stop him from overtly showing affection to her.

The bell of her apartment buzzed. Now who could that be? She went to the door. It was Henry. He was her regular guy before. That was
before she met Biyi. Meeting the latter changed the equation. She had given him the red card. He too had called her bluff.

Surprisingly, Henry called her about two weeks ago. He had told her how much he missed her and would want another chance. Henry said he
had come to realize that life without Nancy would be meaningless. Nancy had said no way, that as far as she was concerned, his chapter was
closed.

Henry would not take no for an answer. That was why he came around. Nancy did not allow him inside the apartment. The moment she realized he was the one, she slammed the door shut to his face. Certainly, it was not now that she had great expectations concerning Biyi that she would allow a 'small boy' like Henry to derail her plans.

Henry waited outside her door for some time, hoping that she would have a change of heart. After some minutes, he realized he would be waiting in vain. He didn't want to wait in vain, so he left.

Two days after Paul first took her out, Nana continued to receive text messages from him. Oh, he was good at texting, alright. He professed that he loved her and would want be part of her for the rest of his life.

Nana had told him she appreciated his advances but she was not in a hurry to start another relationship.. Though she was disappointed about the last one she had, she was not ready to jump into the hands of the next available man.

The most important fact was that she did not want any experimental relationship any more. One more thing: there would be no premaIrenel sex. She had been emphatic about the last point.

'I don't want anything experimental too.' Paul crossed his heart. 'I also agree on the premarital sex issue. That one will not be a problem. I'm
not in a hurry to taste the fruit.' He smirked as if he had made the best of jokes.

Then, he became very serious. 'I'm serious about my desire. I want to marry you. I want to be your life partner.'

She felt she needed to clear some things. 'For real? After all I've told you?'

'Yes, after all you've said. Nana will you marry me?'

He had proposed in his car as he offered to take her to her house. Nana felt very emotional about the whole thing.

'Are things not moving too fast?' She was not convinced about him. 'We've known each other only few days ago.'

'It doesn't matter. Besides, we'll continue to know each other more. As for me, I've found the bones of my bones and the flesh of my flesh.'

'Alright. Let's see how it goes. Let's see how things work out. Above all, let's commit everything into the hands of God. Let's pray to God to
direct our steps.'

'I'm not rushing you' He looked into her eyes. 'I'll wait. I believe I will not wait for long.'

She smiled. 'Let's see how God will work things out.' Nana resolved to remain firm, no matter the situation. What she wanted was happiness
and a godly cum fruitful union. She would not allow herself to be stampeded into any passionate blunder again.

Paul came to visit her in her house. He noticed the modesty of the place. He wanted to get her some furniture but decided against it. He
argued that since she would soon be joining him at his place in matrimony, then there would be no need for that.

'Just lie down and relax. I'm sure you'll soon be ok,' she said like a professional nurse. He took the drug and lay on the bed.

'Excuse me. I'll be back.' Funmi went downstairs to complete what she was doing.

The following morning, he was still not feeling better. Now, feverishness had joined the nagging headache.

She was in his room by six in the morning to find out how he fared.

'I'm feeling feverish.' His voice was low and languid. 'It must be some kind of fever.'

'Oh, dear, sorry. I have to call Doctor Olufemi.' She brought out her phone and scrolled through the phone book.

He made no objection. Doctor Olufemi was the family doctor. He had a modest private hospital, but he had the reputation of being a competent professional.

Olufemi's numbers were not on the first phone. She brought out the second one and scrolled through. Finally, the doctor's number was there.
She dialled his number.

Fortunately, the doctor lived and had his hospital in Ikeja, not very far from where the Oshos lived. Within forty minutes Dr. Olufemi was in the house.

He listened and took notes as Biyi described how he felt. The doctor examined him. At the end, he wrote a prescription of drugs.

'You need to just eat, take the drugs and relax at home today,' the doctor said. 'Don't stress yourself further by doing any work. Just take the
drugs and relax.'

Around ten o'clock that morning, Nana received another call from her 'friend'.

'Hello?' she said.

'Hello, how're you?'

'That must be Paul, right?'

'Yes. And you must be Nana. Didn't you save my number?'

'No, I did not.'

'Well, it's good you recognize my voice. How're you?'

'I thank God.'

'Yes, indeed we must always thank God.'

There was a pause. 'I was wondering if I should take you to dinner early this evening, say around six p.m. Will you be chanced?'

'I ... don't know yet.'

'Sorry, what time do you close at your place of work?'

'I close by six.'

'Good, I can come round by that time. There are good eateries around. It will be a pleasure to take you to one of them.'

'Well, my closing sometimes depends on my madam. That is, if she's around, I may not close at exactly six. But everything depends.'

'I'm ready to wait for you till whatever time you close.'

'Really?'

'Yes. Please give me the address of the place. I'll be there by six.'

Nana gave him the address.

She did not see Madam Funmi throughout that day. When it was closing time, she quickly freshened up. The sales girl too was getting ready to
leave. They bade each other goodbye.

Nana's phone rang.

'I'm in the blue Honda Civic car at the park in front of your stores,' Paul said.

'Okay.'

She picked up her handbag and closed the stores

There was only one car in the park and that must be Paul's. Quite unnecessarily, he blared the horn.

She went to meet him. He opened the car door for her. Even in his sitting position, she could see the zeal in his keenness.

'I'm sorry if it appears I've been disturbing you.' He smiled in apology. 'I only do this to special people.'

'Special? What makes me special?'

'Everything. You may not know it, but you're.'

'Do you always flatter ladies like this?'

'I'm not flattering you, dear Nana.'

He kicked the engine into life and reversed out of the premises.

'D'you have any place in mind that you want us to go?' He stared briefly at her.

She shook her head. 'I thought you already have a place in mind.'

'Indeed, I do. Let's go.'

He drove to Allen Avenue. The eatery had many customers already. They chose a table from where they could see the busy road.

He asked what she wanted.

'Fried rice and chicken.'

He smiled easily. 'That's what I want too.'

She sat while he went to get the food. When he brought the tray, he smiled as he handed her the food.

They started to eat their meal.

'You haven't told me about yourself,' she said.

'Yes. I will.'

He told her. He would soon be thirty five and it had been worrisome he hadn't settled down. He started working in the bank about three years
ago, but he had graduated for close to ten years. He was from a south south state and was the second born from a family of three siblings.

Paul said he first took notice of Nana some weeks ago but had bid his time. According to him, anytime he saw her, he had the impression that
she would be a responsible woman.

It was when he had the conviction that he decided to call her, although he was taking advantage of his official position.

'So, can I know you?' He had started sweating slightly on the brow. The food was hot.

Nana told her about herself. Her real name was Nafisat, and she was from a moslem family from Osun state. Her father gave the nickname,
Nana.

It was last year she embraced Christianity. Now, she preferred the name, Naomi, but Nana still stuck. She was the only daughter of her
parents, but she had two younger brothers. She read Business Administration and was Business Studies teacher in a private school before she
started working at the stores.

She also told him about Ade, and how she believed they were made for each other until recently when things took a new turn.

She even told Paul about the main grouse Ade had against her, which was her inability to conceive for him, although medical results showed
that nothing was wrong with either of them.

Paul listened intently. When she concluded her story, he smiled at her.

'God has a purpose for everything,' His smile became expansive. 'I'm sure my meeting you is for a purpose.'

Nancy called him in the night after the evening that they were supposed to meet. That was more than twenty six hours after the aborted rendezvous. She had waited for this long because she wanted him to be the first to call. She also wanted to register her displeasure over making her wait for nothing.

When she had not heard anything from him after the long wait, she had finally decided to call him.

She dialed his number. After the fifth ringing, the call was answered from the other end.

'Why're you treating me like this?' Nancy started. 'Since yesterday, you didn't see me and you didn't call me since then.'

There was a pause. 'I told you I wasn't feeling well. I've been at home since morning.'

'Oh God, is it that serious? I thought you mentioned tiredness or something.' Her voice ran fast as her tone changed from indignation to
concern.

'It's a fever, but I'm taking medication already.'

'I'm so sorry to hear that. Please get well fast o. I'm already missing you.'

'I'm sure I'll be okay soonest.'

'Please o. I wish I can come around to visit you. Please get well fast.' She looked longingly.

'Thank you. See you soon.'

'Yes, my dear. See you soonest.'

The line was disconnected. So, what she thought was mere tiredness was actually serious.

But why now? Since she had been dating him, she had not for once heard that he was indisposed. Why must it be now that she was expecting
serious love overtures from him?

But know that I mean no harm. I'm not fake either. Paul only wants to be close to you.'

'Thank you, Paul. I appreciate your gesture.'

'You do?' He sounded pleasantly surprised.

'Yes.'

'Thank you, too. God bless you. I'll call you again tomorrow. Bye for now.'

'Bye.'

She stared at the phone in amazement. Wow!

Nancy drove to the rendezvous where she was supposed to meet Biyi. He had called her about an hour ago that they should meet there.

Nancy was a familiar face there. She was led to the suite he had permanently booked and was ushered inside.

Biyi had earlier informed the manager of the place that the lady would be coming and had also instructed that they should serve her whatever
she ordered for.

She ordered for what she normally had - a plate of pepper soup and red wine. As she took them, her mind went over what had happened in
the last couple of days. She had followed him to Ibadan and they came back two days ago. Yesterday, he had seen the prophet and had done
what she was required to do for her to get what she desired to have.

Since they came back from Ibadan, this is the first time she would be meeting Biyi, although they had spoken on the telephone occasionally.

Now, Biyi said they should meet in the guest house. Somehow she was thrilled. Going by the words of the prophet, Biyi would be more loving
than ever. Wow, Nancy was thrilled!

In the comfort of the lounging room, she watched the musical channel and took her refreshments. She was glad she had a friend in Irene. What a valuable piece of advice she had given her. Nancy decided Irene would be her best lady when Biyi did the nuptial tie with her.

It was five p.m. Pastor Sam decided to start the prayer session. It was day-two of the seven-day fasting program he was having with Funmi. He had decided to make the prayers precede the breaking of the fasting.

Sam decided to start with worship/praise songs.

We give you all the glory

We give you honor

We give you all the glory

We give you honor

When he got to the prayers proper, he prayed against all the forces working against the marriage of Biyi and his wife. He prayed that the fire of God should consume any force that was trying to manipulate the man, or divert his love from his wife and family.

In her bedroom, Funmi too was making similar prayers. She was now convinced more than ever that prayers were what she needed to have the best things of life and to retain them.

Biyi closed the file containing the resort centre he was planning to set up in Badagry. It was a big centre that should attract thousands of tourists every year. He was sure it would be a very viable business.

It was five thirty p.m. and it was time he called it a day. Gosh, he had been working since morning! He packed some documents in his brief case. He called his P.A.

'Please tell Leke to come.' Biyi only looked at him briefly. The P.A nodded and left silently.

The driver soon came.

'Oga, well done.'

'Yeah.' Biyi pointed at the briefcase. Leke nodded. He knew what to do.

Biyi picked up his phone. He wanted to tell Nancy that he would soon be with her. He could not reach her as her line was engaged. He decided
he would call again.

He left the office. His P.A would take care of locking up. He took the staircase to the ground floor. He was at the base of the staircase when
he felt some dizziness. He had to hold the rail and to steady himself.

After about ten seconds, he felt better and moved outside the building to the car park. As he was about to enter his Hummer jeep, he felt the
dizziness again. He only managed to sit and the close the door.

When he closed it - and he was sure he did it gently - it sounded as if he had slammed it. Now, he could feel a nagging headache.

He had been working hard since morning. Maybe he needed rest, he decided. What about Nancy? He had asked her to wait for him. Would he still be able to see her?

The dizziness was coming intermittently. He sighed and picked his phone. She picked the call after two ringing.

'Hello, Nancy. I'm sorry I'll not be able to come over there today.' He was surprised that the words came uneasily. I'm kind of feeling dizzy and weak. Sorry, we'll see another time.' Before she could protest, he cut off the line.

Biyi turned to the driver. 'Take me home.' He yawned. He felt he was indeed tired and needed rest.

Inside the guest house, Nancy was surprised to hear what he just said.

'Hello. Are you saying you...' Nancy was saying. She realized that that the line was dead. 'Hello? Hello?'

She tried to call his number but it was not going. Did he just say he was weak and tired and that he would not be coming to the guest house?
Did he just say he would not be coming to see her again?

What a disappointment. Just when she thought she would start having an unfettered passionate time with him. Anyway, there was no problem.

Maybe he had overworked himself, she thought. He would soon be refreshed. By the following day, she had no doubt that she would have him
in her arms again. They would be in each others arms.

While Biyi was instructing Leke to drive him home, Funmi was rounding off her prayers. She felt happy she had embarked on the exercise. She
had only done it for two days. Five days more to go.

She went to the kitchen to prepare a light meal that she would use to break the fasting. Sadiya wanted to take over the cooking but Funmi
insisted on doing it.

She was still in the kitchen when Biyi arrived from work. They could hear the sound of the jeep being driven inside the compound. Sadiya went
out to welcome him and to take his briefcase up.

'Daddy said he's not feeling well.' Sadiya came to inform Funmi as soon as she rejoined her in the kitchen.

'Not feeling well?' Funmi was surprised. Her husband hardly complained of such. She dried her hands. 'I'll be back,' Funmi left for upstairs. She
went straight to his room.

'Hello, darling. Sadiya said you're not feeling too well.'

Biyi was undressing when his wife came in. 'I was o.k until I was calling it a day in the office.'

'What's the problem?' She looked at him in concern.

'Dizziness and headache.'

She touched his forehead to feel the temperature. 'Sorry. Maybe it's the stress of your work. You have to cut down on your travels.'

He grunted. He was now wearing boxer shorts and singlet.

She touched his brow again. His temperature seemed normal.

'Maybe I should get you some analgesics. Once you take it and relax, I'm sure you'll be ok.' She smiled reassuringly. 'I'll be back.'

She went downstairs to get the drugs from the first aid kit. She asked Sadiya to put a bottle of table water and a glass cup on a tray and take
them to his room, while she brought the drug.

'Here, this is water and this is the drug. Take it and relax.'

Biyi smiled at his wife. The very caring woman he used to know was back.

She disconnected the line. There was no doubt that she would do what she was asked to do.

Nana went to the bank to make some deposits of money into the accounts of BestItems stores. The banking hall was brimming with customers and there was a long queue. Thankfully, one of the officers recognized her and took her to an inner room from where she filled the deposit slips.

The officer took the money with the deposit slips and stamped them. She retained the customer's copy, filled the depositors ledger book and dropped the bank's copy. Mission accomplished, she left the place.

About three hours later, she received a call from the officer who stamped the slips.

'Is that Miss Nana?' the caller asked.

'Yes, please. Who's on the line?'

The man introduced himself and his encounter with her in the bank.

She remembered him. He was the officious and the extremely courteous bank officer that attended to her.

'What's the problem?' Nana wondered what could necessitate the call.

'There's no problem. I got your name and phone number from the slips you filled as the depositor. I ought to call only officially. I'm sorry to
break that rule. This is purely a private call.'

'I hope no problem,' she said again.'

'No. No problem. As I said, my name is Paul. I call to let you know I want to be your friend.'

Nana laughed in spite of herself. 'You mean the reason why you call is because you want to be a friend? What happens to all the friends you
have over there?'

'I have colleagues with me over here. But what I want is a friend.'

She sighed. 'What makes you think I can be your friend?'

'I have the belief that you will be.'

'What if your belief is wrong?'

'My belief is hardly wrong.'

She smiled wanly. 'What if I'm married?'

'But then, you're not married.'

'How could you tell?'

'I know. Or are you married?'

She paused slightly. "Actually, I'm not.'

The man laughed shortly and triumphantly. 'I said it.'

'What about you? Aren't you married?' She heart beat rapidly as if she expected a particular answer.

'No, I'm not.'

'I see.'

'That's why I feel free to ask for your friendship.'

Then, he added: 'Alright, I won't rush you. I'll give you some time. I'll call you again tomorrow. But know that I mean no harm. I'm not fake
either. Paul only wants to be close to you.'

'Thank you, Paul. I appreciate your gesture.'

'You do?' He sounded pleasantly surprised.

Indeed she was there. By quarter to ten, Nancy was in the waiting room of the man. She met two other people - a man and a woman - waiting to see him.

She waited for another twenty minutes before it was her turn.

'Good morning, holy one.' She gave a deep bow.

'Good morning, my daughter. He smiled and motioned her to a chair. As usual, he was wearing long, red gown with a stylish, red turban.
'How're you today?'

'I'm fine. Thank you, sir.'

'You're welcome. What can I do for you?'

Before she could open her mouth to talk, he hushed her.

'I think I know why you're here. It's about your future, it's about how you want to secure your future concerning a life partner.'

Nancy nodded. She was amazed by the discerning power of the man.

The man grinned. 'Let me congratulate you for making the right move at the right time. The man you have in your mind will bring you the best
of things in life. Yes, you have made the right decision.'

'Thank you, holy one. What is the next thing for me to do?'

The prophet nodded. 'You will bring fifty thousand naira. You will also bring me the picture of the man and his full name. That is all.'

He grinned and folded his palms.

'You will be the one he will love most in the universe. He will give you whatever you ask for, even if you ask for his two eyes.'

Nancy was impressed. 'Ah, that will be good, holy one. I'll really appreciate that.'

'Good. When are you bringing those things I said?'

There was enthusiasm in her respond. 'Today, holy one. The money is no problem. As for his picture, I have some on my phone, but I'll have to
print it out. All the same, everything will be ready by this afternoon.'

'Very good. I'll be expecting you.'

About four hours later, Nancy was back with all the requirements.

Funmi decided to follow the driver in bringing the children back from the school as she had been doing for over a week now.

Turo could not but notice the changes in madam. It was as if she had undergone transformations. She no longer yelled again. She now easily overlooked shortcomings. Above all, she appeared to be caring now. How wonderful!

Her children chatted excitedly in the car.

'Mummy, you need to see my new aunty. She's very tall,' Deola said.

'No, my aunty is taller,' Derin put in. 'She's even taller than daddy.'

At this point, Funmi's phone rang. Her younger brother was on the line.

'Hello, Sam. How're you?'

'I'm fine, sister. How are you and the family?'

'All is well, Sam.'

'Sister, there's one task you have to do.'

She perched the phone more to her right ear. 'What task is that?'

'The Lord laid it on my mind that starting from tomorrow, you will have to fast for seven days. Yes, for seven days. You can be breaking it each day by six p.m.

'I will also be joining you in the fasting. A challenge is on the way, but you have overcome it by the power of almighty God. That's the
message, sister.'

She sighed. 'Thank you, Sam. Thank you very much. God bless you. The good Lord will increase your ministry. More anointing for you in Jesus
name.'

'Amen. Amen. And Amen. Thank you, too, ma'am. Don't forget: from tomorrow. God bless.'

'Of course, I won't forget. Bye.'

She disconnected the line. There was no doubt that she would do what she was asked to do.

When Doris expressed the desire to spend the weekend with him, he had warmly welcomed the idea. He drove her home straight from the office that Friday. It was easy for her as she had already packed the clothes she would need with her.

Ade believed things would turn out to be good, just as Nana believed, although she was hurt. It was a case of Ade and Nana being optimistic in their different perspectives.

Irene was with her friend, Nancy in the latter's apartment. There was a bottle of wine they were sipping from. There was also a saucer containing ground nuts. In the background, the music of Tiwa Savage played.

'So, the man has not told you anything about marriage, abi?' Irene prodded, smiling at her.

Nancy shook her head. 'No, he has not. Rather he is hinting that we have to be discreet as he doesn't want his home to be wrecked. Can you imagine that?'

'He doesn't want his home to be wrecked!' Irene wriggled her nose in contempt. 'What a statement! If he truly doesn't want a wrecked home, why does he leave his wife and be frolicking with a beautiful young lady? What else does he expect?'

Nancy agreed completely with her friend. 'I wonder o.'

Irene scooped some ground nuts inside her mouth. Her mouth made loud sound of munching. 'But you're the one wasting time.'

Nancy looked surprised. 'Me? How?'

Irene paused. 'You're wasting time because you have not really done what you should have done.'

Nancy looked confused. 'And what's that?'

'Why don't you tell the prophet about the matter?'

Nancy's face clouded in thoughts. 'The prophet.' It was a mumble and it was more to herself.

The prophet was their spiritual consultant. The man in question had helped them to have a better life, or so they believed. He was instrumental
to Irene securing a job with the multi national, giant telecommunication company she presently worked with. The prophet, as they called him,
was also the one that helped Nancy to blossom in her business.

'You think the prophet can help in an aspect like this?' Nancy looked at her friend questioningly.

'Why not?' Irene was positively assertive. 'I believe he can help in all aspects. What're you waiting for? Why don't you consult him?'

Nancy thought for a moment and nodded. 'You're right, Irene. I'll go and see him tomorrow morning.'

'Now, you're talking.' Irene gave a thumb up.

The following morning, about seven o'clock, Nancy made an important call to the prophet.

'Good morning, holy one.' She was cool but desirous. The title, holy one, was the standard way of addressing the man.

'Good morning, Nancy.' His baritone voice sounded as confident as ever.

'I will like to see you, holy one.' Nancy could visualize the man - his peculiar attire and his ever serious mien. 'Say, by ten o' clock this
morning. May I come around by that time?'

'You'll be most welcomed, Nancy.'

'Thank you, sir, er, the holy one. I'll be there.' She whistled as she ended the call.

Indeed she was there. By quarter to ten, Nancy was in the waiting room of the man. She met two other people - a man and a woman - waiting to see him.

She waited for another twenty minutes before it was her turn.

What was on his mind was that the amount she needed must be on the very high side.

When she stopped the embrace, he stared into her eyes. 'How much do you need? I can see that this your show of love is not for nothing.'

Funmi looked surprised. 'I didn't say I needed anything.'

Now, he was surprised. 'You mean you don't need any money?'

She shook her head. 'If I need anything at all, it is not money.'

He nodded. 'If you need? 'What will that be?'

She smiled at him. 'It doesn't have to be money all the time. Let me whisper it to you. It's for your ears only.'

He corked his head to her side to listen as she whispered to him. Soon, he laughed.

'My dear wife, are you sure that is all you want?'

She smiled and nodded.

'Very well. It shall be done as you wish.'

A week after Nana moved to her new apartment, she had started becoming familiar with the new environment. She had fixed the net door and had repainted the interior of the flat. She would be needing many things such as furniture, bed, cooking gas, and so on. For now, she had bought two plastic chairs and a mattress she would be managing with.

She had also called her parents and friends that she had relocated. Her parents had heaved sigh of relief, urging her to be circumspect henceforth. Her good friend, Maria sympathized with her and enjoined her to be hopeful. As a matter of fact, Maria had got her address and had promised to visit her this weekend.

Thinking back, Nana believed things would turn out to be good. Madam Funmi too had shown a lot of concern. She asked her if she needed any
loan or salary advance. Despite replying in the negative, the madam gave her some money, and she called it a grant. Nana was very grateful.

Nana had not heard anything from Ade since she left his house. He had not called her, nor responded to the note that she left behind. She was
actually not expecting any reply from him. That was okay. She would have to put everything behind her and forge on with life. God would take
control.

It was late Sunday afternoon when Maria and her two-year old daughter came visiting. Nana welcomed them to her new home. They sat on the plastic chairs and chatted.

'It's good that you left,' Maria said. 'My spirit tells me it's okay that way. I believe God did not ordain the relationship, if not, things would not
turn the ways they have turned.'

Nana sighed. 'I believe so too.'

Maria was with her until dusk. Nana thanked her for the visit as she accompanied her to the bus stop. As Nana made her way back to her house, she thought of what she would eat that night. Since she still had soup, she could make Eba. It was not really easy to live alone, she had discovered, but she was fast adjusting.

That very Sunday evening, Ade was with Doris in his apartment. Doris had been with him since Friday evening but she would be going back to her house later this Sunday evening. Ade was delighted Nana was able to get her own place and leave him alone fast. When he had told Doris that Nana was no longer living with him, the latter had expressed surprise.

'So fast?' Doris had raised an eyebrow.

'Yes, so fast. Now, you're free to come to the house as much as you want.'

When Doris expressed the desire to spend the weekend with him, he had warmly welcomed the idea. He drove her home straight from the office
that Friday. It was easy for her as she had already packed the clothes she would need with her.
