NYSCRe: NYSC - A Useless And Worthless Program That Has Outlived Its Relevance by TRalph(op): 8:35pm On Nov 02, 2017
Finally, it ended today. Thanks be to God. It has personally been a year full of challenges, victories, memorable moments and achievements.
As earlier promised, I'm to give a feedback after the scheme ends.

In all, my perspective hasn't changed much at all. The motive, attitude, flow, reasoning, etc of how the scheme started right from camp continued as such till the last day of passing out.

At collection of certificates, there was the usual frustrations of (stressful but avoidable) long queues. Those who could shunt and jump in did as such. Nothing changed in the orientation of the youths right from camp till last day. Long queues that are readily avoidable with proper process flow still remained the same. Nothing changed in the perspectives of the scheme's staff members.
This makes me to think that Nigeria (maybe Africa at large) are so damn used to the status quo that the slightest improvement of some sorts wouldn't be welcomed / encouraged or at least cross our tiny minds.

Everything can be hacked. There is always a loophole. If you find it and exploit it, good for you. But, we need to be able to look at the bigger picture as a nation.

Youth on selfies and selfies on youths. Laughs and hugs. Smiles and clicks. Knees bent, eyebrows raised, bla bla bla. It seemed fun but I can't help but wonder if that's all to it.
I'm sure it is good to live in the moment and savor every fragrance of life as it comes. But, it is also good to think about the next moment as the next starts from the current.

Anyways, back to the scheme. It makes no sense if after decades of running it, nothing much has changed. The same orientation of lies, corruption, indifference, mediocrity, lack of standards, lobbyists, etc continued from camp till last day.
Sincerely, there is no progress for this nation until a lot of things are overhauled.

As Nigerians (or maybe Africans), we love to celebrate mediocrity. Things that lack substance and common sense are often at the top of our list. Things that would negatively affect the future of generations unborn is at the tip of our fingers. We fail to see with our minds, but, only with our eyes. No vision, only sight. Hence, we are caught up in the mediocrity of things, thinking only of the now and looking up to the Divine for intervention. Have we ever wondered, what is the difference between a developed nation and a third world nation? It isn't farfetched. We are the roots and the rooftops of our very own problems as a nation.

If only the scheme can focus on Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship, labelled as SAED, along with Community Services, labelled as CDS, while every other useless labels like PPA, camping, pointless parades and marching, etc can be heavily revised or scrapped, then, we might have a chance of breeding a pack of seasoned youths for the country... youths with entrepreneurship or socio-preneurship mindsets respectively. At the very least, youths well seasoned for the corporate world.
But, as it is, all we have are youths with same mindsets as they were. Only post graduation memories of meeting new people, tales by phone light and entangled misfiring neurons.
I must also say, I just don't mean skills like tailoring, makeup, etc which is now the order of the day just because everybody is doing it, I must also do. Follow-follow! I mean real skills (aforementioned included) with reasonable action and implementation, packaged with branding, right experiences, exposure, followup, perseverance, practicability, application to real life challenges, motivation and yields (gains or losses).

A + A = 2A
A x B = AB
That is simple enough. We need to move beyond this in Africa. No wonder the frustrated talents are forced to move abroad, contributing their quota to already developed nations while some, in high spirits, choose to still remain and continue the struggle to make impact. I salute your courage. I wanna be like you.
I know of a few pals who skipped this useless scheme INTENTIONALLY and are ALL doing great by the way. It goes to say that the scheme has zero to minus impact. And by the way, I mean real IMPACT, not MEMORIES.

Too much talk and no actions. What a nation!

In conclusion, I still believe it should be scrapped as long as the government wouldn't want to revise the scheme. But, if it is revised, it can be one of the best things Nigeria can give to the her Youths. I would personally support a government with a clear cut plan and investment in the youth of the nation with the scheme's overhauling / revision clearly stated.
And by government, I don't mean this old generation, they've failed us countless times already. I mean this upcoming generation, hoping we don't follow in the footsteps of our fathers.

Just my take on the matter at hand.
I'm not at 100% yet, don't get me wrong. All I'm saying is that, we, youths, can at least try to make an impact, not just mobile snapshots.
Please, Youths of Nigeria (Africa), we can do better. Please, let's do better. Let's use our neurons to innovate, discover, invent and impact.

I have studied the plans I have for myself and I have come to the conclusion that NYSC does not have any factor in it.
I don't have one year to go and waste on frivolities.
The meeting of friends and social life is something I did quite well in the university and that is enough for me.
On the issue of the pittance which some see as enticing, without tooting my horn, I have made almost double of that in a week just doing what I do.
I have decided that I won't go. Would rather use that time to hone my skills and become a professional in it.
Going through your thread has made me see I won't be missing out on much.
Thank you
I admire your courage to skip NYSC and I really wish I could do so too. But, my career and business is closely tied with my license which NYSC is needed to complete its processing. Hence, my reason to forcefully endure the useless scheme.

This is why some of us are advocating that the useless scheme be abandoned or at least made voluntary so that other things like Masters and so on won't be tied to it.

So, please for goodness sake, let this time wasting and pointless scheme be abolished.
NYSCRe: NYSC - A Useless And Worthless Program That Has Outlived Its Relevance by TRalph(op): 7:04am On Dec 15, 2016
Since camp ended, it seems the stress and nonsense of NYSC continues even after camp as the struggle to sort out PPA continues. So, I have had no time to update the thread.

Concerning the SAED program as promised, the summary of my thoughts on it is this:

If anything should be retained in NYSC, it should be SAED. However, it should be completely reviewed.
First, we arguably would agree that our government has nothing to offer to us (from no jobs to poor health system to poor infrastructures to open corruption and so on), hence, it is every citizen for himself, no matter your profession or career path. Therefore, if the educational system won't give us the necessary skill for survival in the 21st century Nigeria, any scheme that remotely offers something useful should be encouraged.

However, most of the SAED program is grossly misguided. I can say this first hand because I personally went through all of the classes seeking for anything slightly interesting. From ICT to public speaking to shoe making to hair-doing to cosmetology, I couldn't find anything to spur my interest.
Sure, the tutors tried and most corpers listened, but something critical was missing.

Starting a profitable business is more than just having a skill. I say this because I run a business myself. You might have the best of skills and produce the best of products/services, but, no marketing skills, you won't sell anything and no managerial skills, you will waste resources. More so, without passion and a sense of purpose to keep you through the first formative months or years in the business, you'll quit once you face the basic challenges of starting out. That is why only few can testify of a viable business since SAED started out in NYSC camps few years ago.
I believe, every corp member should first find out their passion before selecting a skill to learn before setting up anything. S/he should be a voracious reader of books and materials in other to manage time well and thrive.

The next critical point is that quite a number of the tutors in my camp were grossly unskilled to teach. I good example was the ICT section. Oh my! Don't get me started on that. So, maybe better screening of tutors should be done to put that in place.

There isn't time for more specific updates anymore. But, generally speaking, NYSC is arrant nonsense. SAED gets a score of barely 35% but that is still not enough reason to waste the lives and time of fresh Nigerian youths for a whole year.
NYSCRe: NYSC - A Useless And Worthless Program That Has Outlived Its Relevance by TRalph(op): 12:14pm On Dec 11, 2016
Updates on the clinic activities:
Not much has improved yet in the clinic's general conditions.

Ambulance:
I might have forgotten to mention that in my first week of arrival, the camp ambulace had no functioning car battery. The battery was borrowed from someone else's personal car and used to start the ambulance. I got to know this info when the driver was bitterly complaining to the matron and clinic head.
Well, I don't have an update on the ambulance situation since my activities didn't involve the ambulance. Just that a colleague of mine who accompanied the matron and medics in the ambulance during an emergency transfer of a patient to the teaching hospital said that all the drugs, infusions and even syringes in the ambulance are all expired.

Drugs:
We are still out very important drugs. While the ones we have are barely enough.
The few we could lobby from some pharmaceutical industries, community pharmacies, etc are also running out fast. Moreover, there are limits to what they could spare us for free.
We sometimes get humble donations of drugs from fellow corp members who's parents live nearby and got them excess drugs that they could spare some for the clinic.
And a couple of times, the clinic head gives some minute cash to buy essential emergency drugs that are running out like Salbutamol nebules, Iv Hydrocort, etc

Emergencies at & after Camp Fire:
Yesterday's camp fire was like a disaster in the making. The carnival and camp fire started quite late. It rained during the carnival and it was quite cold. We were forced out of the hostel and other refuge places after the rained stopped to join the carnival.
And that's when the emergencies started. Corp members who were already asthmatic started having attacks and they kept rushing them in one after the other. I was glad I wasn't really on duty, just that the activities at carnival and camp fire was just too boring and pointless to me, so, I managed to take refuge at the clinic, hiding. In a space of 5 mins, the medics had handled at least 3 asthma attacks. Shortly after, people without history of asthma were rushed in by friends and soldiers, carrying them by head, shoulders, legs and back. It got to a point that I lost count of emergencies cases after number 10 when I was forced to join the dispensary.

Obviously, the rain - cold, camp fire - smoke were all triggers to these asthmas. At a point, after we complained to the clinic head, she informed the camp director that the hostel should be open and made voluntary for people to attend the camp fire. After some bureaucracy and play of power between the clinic head, camp directory and army commandant, I guess they succumbed to the clinic head and opened the hostel for voluntary return few hours later.
When things died down a bit, I went to the parade ground again and I was surprised to see tons of students jumping and dancing and smooching and kind of having fun and I wonder, what a world! I had to return early to bed around past 11pm or so only to resume by 5am to meet more emergency cases rushed in. Thank goodness there haven't been any deaths so far and I can only pray there won't be any till the end.

The summary is that I believe the camp doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, lab scientists, dentists, optometrists, etc are all seriously trying under such poor clinic circumstances, equipments and drug stocks.
BTW, we aren't exempted from the strenuous camp activities once we are off shift. Hence, it is even much more strenuous for us.

I learnt that some NYSC officials of some sort are visiting camp clinics across the nation. I do hope they go round and make effective changes and upgrades to all the NYSC clinics nationwide. I do hope each state director don't sugar dress the clinics prior to their inspection in a bid to make things look falsely good.
I can only hope a change/improvement is done, especially if this pointless and useless NYSC (that forces Nigerian graduates to go through meaningless stress under dangerous conditions) should continue.

NYSC and/or Federal govt should allocate serious cash to upgrade the clinics. I got to realize that year in&out, the medical team contribute cash to buy equipments and stuffs for the clinic. So, our contributions are almost done to get something we think would be useful running into a few hundred thousands. But, to me, this is just a temporary fix which is still pointless because how much can we all contribute and how much stuffs can we all buy? It is meaningless compared to the actual millions that should be used to upgrade the clinics to a minimum standard once for all which will help prevent unnecessary deaths at NYSC camps.

Stay tuned for my next update on the SAED program once I get the time.
NYSCRe: NYSC - A Useless And Worthless Program That Has Outlived Its Relevance by TRalph(op): 3:05pm On Dec 09, 2016
I've posted this long ago and I'm not sure why Nairaland removed my comment and sort of temporarily banned me. Anyways, I hope Nairaland doesn't ban me again.

This update is about the mostly stupid and immensely dumb NYSC lectures. It is purely my opinion though.

First, I agree that in an ideal situation, not 100% of all the lectures will be appealing, let alone, relevant to 100% of the population. However, anything short of 30% relevance is totally stupid and 20% appealing is extremely wasteful (both of time and resources).

So far, I can broadly categorize the lectures into two sections:
1. Sponsored lectures
2. Non sponsored lectures

The non-sponsored lectures are the likes of SERVICON, FOI Act, NDLEA, NEMA, SON, CBN, BOI, BOA, NAFDAC, etc. Usually, they are unbiased lectures because they are meant to educate and inform us. To be fair, I'll say on the average, most of these lectures have been barely OK. At least, they spoke and made us know that they still exist. Some of the topics were delivered by NYSC staff, most of which I felt was an insult to the intelligence of graduates. For example, a lady spoke on "Gender Issues". At first, I wondered if I was in primary school listening to a "boys are better than girls" moderated debate. I also felt, if the offcials think such a substandard lecture on the topic was what we should be listening to, then, that's insulting to the intelligence of Nigerian graduates. Or, if the officials think the delivered lecture is standard enough for the topic, then, that verifies that they are just plain stupid. At least, a simple solution would be to invite notable Nigerians grounded on the subject to deliver the lectures, rather than forcefully feeding us with crap. I could go on giving specific examples on such topics and how they were delivered, but, the anger in me will just keep boiling. Moreover, I barely have enough time in camp to write.
As for the sponsored lectures, they were grossly dumb, and completely biased. They paid a sizeable fee to get the 5mins, 10mins, 20mins, 30mins, etc opportunity to speak, hence, the talks are financially motivated. Usually, they had businesses to promote which made them to make bogus claims that were just plain stupid to hear and also bad for business (for those who actually know how to do business). Nonetheless, a couple of lectures made some sense. Eg, a man delivered a standard lecture on how to compose a business plan, stating all the factors to be considered and how to carryout each section including market research, and he concluded on the services that his business offers to SMEs. So far, that is about the most sensible lecture given. Others are just plain and open display of stupidity and ludicrous logorrhea.
I wondered why NYSC would permit someone to talk on and promote any of those money schemes out there. As an entrepreneur and the little I know about economic theories and policies, I have some negative reservations about such money schemes, but, that's not the topic of discussion. Nonetheless, I wouldn't condemn anyone who participates in it. A lady spoke on such money schemes and referrals. Even most secular organizations and communities I know of wouldn't permit such. Even Nairaland don't permit such. Let alone, a program that is meant to equip Nigerian youths.

In summary, my conclusion is this: less than 10% of the lectures make any sense at all. And approximately 2% of these lectures are relevant in training the Nigerian youth to effectively face the global challenges, or least, survive or thrive in the Nigerian economy.

More than two weeks into the NYSC camp orientation program, and I still fail to pick out any mustard seed of sense in the program.
Less than one week to go. Stay tuned for more updates.

Moreover,It's not all that do indulge in girls/ladies talk nor illicit sex of a thing, various funs abound bro.
I'm not in support of scrapping the scheme but am in for policy reviews.
Please endeavor to keep us update bro.
Thanks.
Sorry, I'm somewhat reluctant to share the camp state for now.
I already mentioned as a corp member, I work in the clinic and with some specifics so far, if I mention the camp state, anyone will be able to trace me. So, for some weird reasons, I just feel safe to keep the camp state anonymous for now (till after camp hopefully).

Yeah, not EVERYONE have fun with girls talk. I've met a few (very very few) fellow corp member who have found fun and inspiration in the SAED programs (which happens to be one good thing about NYSC and I do hope NYSC focuses more on that in the reviewed version, that is, if they ever review the program). Others catch fun via the limited sports and social activities. And like I said, I guess I respect them for their ability to catch fun despite all either MINDFULLY or MINDLESSLY.

I should have an update tomorrow or day after, hopefully.
NYSCRe: NYSC - A Useless And Worthless Program That Has Outlived Its Relevance by TRalph(op): 8:27am On Dec 06, 2016
@Dream2 at my camp, we haven't seen any NYSC DG (Kazaure), let alone, having the opportunity to raise our concerns.
@Fabulocity is right. Even if we do, I'm pretty sure we won't get the chance to voice anything useful.
Also, @Dream2 I think I respect those who MINDFULLY or MINDLESSLY are able to catch fun at camp despite all. Though, I guess majority of those who catch fun are those who come back to the room after social activities 8:30-10:30pm and all they ever discuss about is girls and girls and girls and how they plan to have illicit sex with girls they've met after camp.

I wonder why NYSC is still as it is for over 3 decades. I know all my rants here might make no difference in the long run, but at least, I believe the truth/fact should be stated.
If the program can't be restructured/reviewed to train youths to meet the current global needs and face the challenges of the 21st century, then, it should be scrapped irrespective of corruption or sentiments or whatever might be involved.
If the program keeps experiencing deaths of precious youths due to poor clinic facilities, then, the clinics should either be upgraded or the program scrapped.

Stay tuned till I get time for more updates.
NYSCRe: NYSC - A Useless And Worthless Program That Has Outlived Its Relevance by TRalph(op): 2:06pm On Dec 05, 2016
@LMay yeah I agree with you. It is very very stupid of the federal govt to have a clinic without at least one consultant to cater for and oversee the medical activities. This among other silly reasons are why the clinic at NYSC camps are grossly inefficient.
In addition, the NYSC official heading the clinic has no clinical or medical training whatsoever. While the next in command is a matron who probably has nothing upstairs because it seems she hasn't practised outside the four walls of a sitting room with bunks of beds called a clinic.
How do we expect lives to be saved from unnecessary strenuous and stupid military activities in such a clinic? I shake my head for Nigeria and the way she treats her graduate with useless NYSC and unemployment afterwards.

Another major update from my camp is that of theft. The female hostel has witnessed major thefts ranging from expensive phones to jewelries and so on. The camp director kept raining abuses on girls to stop stealing every morning at the devotion/morning drills. Eventually, few days later the actual thief was caught red-handed with the stolen phone still with her in her hands. Lots of ladies took her pictures. To our surprise, it was an NYSC staff. She enters the hostel to search and steal stuffs after all corp members has been chased out of the hostel for compulsory forceful stupid activities.
The worst of it all is that, the next day at the morning devotion/morning drills, the camp director and camp officials stylishly covered up the issue of the stealing official who was caught. They said the issue is under investigation. For goodness sake, if it was a corp member that was caught red-handed, we are pretty sure the person will face serious disciplinary actions. But, it has been 4 days now and nothing has been done about the issue and no update about their so-called stupid and useless investigation.

About a week and half to the end of orientation camp, and I still fail to see any reasonable point for the useless and wasteful program called NYSC.
The camp is still controlled by nutheads officials and empty-head soldiers. I believe a computer program, as rigid as it seems, is more sensible than most soldiers who don't understand anything whatsoever. This is true for about 90% of their staffs and soldiers.
Till next time for more updates.
NYSCRe: NYSC - A Useless And Worthless Program That Has Outlived Its Relevance by TRalph(op): 8:18pm On Dec 02, 2016
I'm back again with another update. Pardon my grammatical errors because I only get few minutes to type in between crazy and useless NYSC activities & stupid-dumb lectures.

I feel the need to share concerning the Kano corp member that died recently. A roommate of mine said that the lady was his classmate in school. So, the death was somewhat close. Sure, all death is painful, and even more painful when it is the life of a youth. And even most painful, when it is on a dumb, useless and pointless program called NYSC.

To the second point about the death, I wouldn't blame the medics on duty because I have a direct experience on the way the NYSC clinic is run. I earlier said that I also have to work in the NYSC clinic due to my course of training. And like I said, the clinic is grossly understocked with basic necessary drugs and medical equipments. Hence, improvisation is the order of the day. It could be possible that the corper doctors actually tried their best to help in the way they could with the limited resources they had in the clinic. But, probably they might not have drugs to counter the anaphylactic reaction the Lady had to the administered drug. Well, just my possible speculations.

At my camp, there are insufficient drugs. We keep giving underdose and dispense daily doses just to ensure the drug lasts. A fellow colleague tried soliciting for drug supplies from senior colleagues and pharmaceutical companies. Eventually, he was able to find someone willing to supply. Do you know what the coconut-heads did next? The NYSC clinic head (who wrongly has no clinical/medical training) hijacked the process from my colleague and insisted that they make the supply with a NYSC letter head. Not that she's wrong, but, what I hated is the mannerism by which she did it and wanting to bring some unnecessary bureaucracy into the supply process.
If those morons actually know what they are doing in the first place, if they can't allocate money for proper clinic stocking, why don't they do the lobbying themselves from the beginning rather than waiting for the initiative of a medic corper pharmacist to seek for free drugs supply. Eventually, despite the company's free supply, drugs at my camp isn't still enough and the lobbying continues. Well, I would advice that other fellow camp pharmacists corpers and medic members too can try lobbying for free drugs if you don't have enough.
This further proves that the Nigerian government is dumb simply because those in govt affairs are dumb. Right from the immediate federal workers to the politicians, bunch of dumb stupid folks.
NYSCNYSC - A Useless And Worthless Program That Has Outlived Its Relevance by TRalph(op): 4:59am On Dec 02, 2016
I can boldly say that NYSC is a stupid, worthless, ludicrous, pointless, utterly useless, money-wasting, time-consuming, life-threatening, meaningless, irrational, nonsensical program Nigeria forces on her youths, which is totally unfair.

I have never really been a fan of the stupid program in the first place, and recently, my camp experience in 2016 Batch B, just verified that it is a totally worthless and useless program Nigeria should either scrap off or completely overhaul every activity in the program.

As if the long queues for every single action which could be easily solved by ICT wasn't stressful enough, they had to subject us all to utterly strenuous paramilitary activities. These activities which include drills and matching under intensely hot sun is exhaustive and destructive to human health.
Even when people complain, the soldiers would never listen, until someone faints. We have had several cases of corp members fainting after standing and undergoing immense useless paramilitary training under the hot sun. Military trainings that would not add anything to the our intellectual capability, neither will it build the nation or help us out of the recession.

To worsen the case, the NYSC clinic is poorly stocked with drugs and essential medical equipments. I know this because I happen to be one of the corp members who's also a medical personnel who has to both undergo clinic practice to help the wounded and sick corpers and I still had to do my own torturing military drills under the hot sun as well as.

The shortage of drugs and other basic medical facilities is just too alarming. First of all, the clinic is way below standard. It is just a room with four double bunks which can only take about 8 inpatients, three tables (one for doctors, pharmacists and nurses) and maybe 10 chairs. What wicked government camps over 2600+ Nigerian graduates and provides a clinic of just 8-bed capacity? Only Nigeria would do that. This is arrant nonsense. Stupidity of the highest order from the Federal Govt to the camp director and camp commandant and every other coconut-headed slowpoke that is an executive in the camp. It shows complete incompetence and lack of common sense from their end.

Lots of corp members come down with broken bones, bruises, wounds, swollen feet, malaria, diarrhea, infections, etc of which there are not enough drugs to give them. The kind of treatment the medical corp members are forced to give their fellow corpers is nothing to write home about. We had no choice than to give out incomplete doses to patients asking them to come back for their next doses (refills) with the hope that they will be well (probably miraculously).
The health of corp members is of no priority at all. We all heard reports of death of corpers while in other camps in the country in this same 2016 Batch B. How many more camp deaths do we wanna see online before Nigerians wake up and take action?
It seems we are always slow to act. I pity myself and my beloved country.

They give little time to rest. Once they end a drill, and it's time for breakfast or lunch, remember we are over 2600+, at least 50% would have to queue for food, before we collect our meal or midway eating, it is already time for another round of drills. This is just like a prison, I suppose. So, we have corpers working terrible drills under hot sun with barely-filled or empty stomachs. How's that safe for any human health?
Only a few with medical conditions get exemptions, while those with no medical condition but low physical stamina are forced to endure useless and pointless drills.
If we need to gym, we know where to go and we'll gladly pay for it. But, don't force us to do what will put our lives at risk.
Just last night, we were scared by an emergency wake-up call form the soldier for no apparent reason and they won't tell us why. If only you knew how unsecured and terrified and equally annoyed we felt!

The whole scheme of activities are a bunch of complete nonsense. We spend hours under the sun, damaging our health, risking our lives for no reason. We spend the remaining part of the day listening to stupid lecturers by empty-heads who try to call themselves our parents and we, their wards. Seriously, if you hear them speak, you'll wonder if they have any gray matter in their skulls. Sometimes, I wonder if they think we are kindergarten or primary school pupils because I believe those so-called lectures should be for Junior Sec School pupils at most, and not graduates. There are more important issues we should be discussing which would help shape the future of the country. If those morons think these are what we should be listening to, then, it proves that they only have watermelon as heads.
One slowpoke came to talk about FOI (Freedom of Information act) and less than 2 minutes after the long boring speech, a coconut head came to tell us that when the press would come the following day, we should not interact with them. Anyone caught doing so will be severely punished. What a contradiction! Why teach us freedom of speech if you'll only come to threaten us not to speak. I can give tons and tons of stupid speeches that goes on in camp. Big fools that don't know their left from right...do-as-I-say-and-not-as-I-do set of morons.
To be fair, only a few of their resource/invited speakers seem to make sense. I would say less than 10% of those who have spoken have discussed key issues.

NYSC should be totally eliminated from the curriculum of Nigerian youths. The least the govt can do is to make it voluntary so that at least, NYSC certificate won't be required for MSc studies and other key requirements for other things. Hence, only those who are willing to undergo the senseless program will go through it.
Left to me, NYSC should be cancelled completely. Or, the curriculum should be overhauled and reviewed to focus on the important issues Nigerian youths need like skill acquisition, entrepreneurship trainings, community service (I just hope their so-called CDS is not a similarly senseless program like camp as well), promoting unity, etc.

Talking about promoting unity, the stupid morons are doing quite the opposite. I wonder who even designed the NYSC program in the first place. Or is it that over decades, it gradually lost its focus and became a death trap for Nigerian youths?

When we have games (football, volleyball, etc), we are not allowed to watch or cheer our platoons. Only the players play on the pitch while the rest of us are under the severely hot sun undergoing drills and training as if we are expecting Cameroon to attack us tomorrow or so.
I believe we can learn from the Olympic games, which brings nations together to play and have fun, thereby fostering unity. But, NYSC is the reverse - players play while the spectators are tortured.

I believe the soldiers should permit corp members to rest when they are tired, but no, they won't. More so, I believe the participation in any kind of Man O' War or paramilitary training should be by choice and not by force.

When NYSC becomes a mini prison which threatens the health and life of corp members without adding any meaningful value to them, I believe this calls for a drastic review of the program.

From the NCC data policy (now paused or reversed hopefully) to the tin-tomato importation ban (due to stupid reasons), I'm afraid to say that I have lost hope in the policy making decisions of the Senate and Nigerian govt. I might even begin to lose hope for a better Nigeria at this rate. God help us all.

Stay tuned. I'll keep pouring out updates as things go on in the camp.
Hopefully, I won't be caught making this post.

The Day I Slept

It was 11pm. I laid on my bed exhausted from the day’s work. It was hard to tell what exactly was the most tiring in the day. Was it the work done? Or, the traffic in Lagos? Or, was it that I had to wake up as early as 4am? Anyways, it would not matter since I have got the weekend to rest. Thank God it is Friday – TGIF as they put it these days. I remember the last thoughts on my mind was that the garri was almost finished, and, I am yet to get my salary for the month… and the month still remains one more week to end.

I sank into depression as my calculative mind realized that the remaining cash is barely enough for me till the end of the month. “Oh!” I said to myself, “Why am I like this?” “God this ain’t fair. I work too hard only for so little. I don’t like my job and God isn’t doing anything to help me.” I am not sure I knew went I actually slept off.

I opened my eyes to see a blue-colored ceiling. It seemed very strange. That was because the last time I checked, the ceiling of my room was white. It made me to remember the house I grew up in. We spent over 30 years in that rented apartment. I had quite a number of memories in that house, most of which were unpleasant. I often wondered why we never moved out of that house.

I felt my stomach grumble and I knew it was hunger. I thought I could sleep off more to forget my hunger, but, most especially, to postpone the garri I wanted to take to a later hour. However, the sleep would not take over. After a few minutes, I found myself crying like a little baby. I tried to stop crying but I could not. I tried to cover my mouth, to my amazement, I realized my hands were so little and puffy, like that of a baby. I wanted to stand up but could not find the strength from my backbone. I was surprised. The hunger was also so strong and I cried like a baby more.

In no time, I saw my mother beside my bed. That was when I realized it was a cradle. She picked me up with swollen eyes as though she had not slept in a long time. At the same time, she wore a smile that showed she was delighted. It was quite confusing. She looked much younger and prettier than I ever knew her. She curled me in her arms and opened up her breast. For a second, which seemed like hours, it was very awkward. I was sure I knew what would happen next. I wanted to wake up from my dream but I could not. In previous times, I could always pinch myself whenever I had an unpleasant dream and I would wake. This time, my fingers were so small and my nails so short. In no time, my mouth rushed to her nipples and I sucked till my belly was filled. She laid me down and I slept off.

I woke again. This time, I was still a baby. The wall clock right across the cradle read 3 o’ clock. I saw three beings around me. Their apparel was full of light. They stood around my cradle. I should have known that I could not stand up, yet I tried and my backbone failed. The best I could do was to make baby burp sounds and spread my hands and feet in the air. I noticed the light beings struggled with three other dark beings. I was sure my little mind could not comprehend that it was a fight. All I could understand was that they struggled and it was a fierce one. It was so fierce that I started to cry like a baby again. In a few seconds, my mom rushed to me.

As she picked me up, I still could see them struggling. She tried to feed me again but I would not eat. I kept looking at the struggle. All the time, since mom realized that I would not suck, she started to sing to me. I could not understand the song she sang. But, I knew she tried her best to calm me down. But I would not calm down, as my attention was fixed on the struggling beings. At a point, it seemed they had overcome. Then, one of the light beings came and smiled at me. It was so much light that it could blind me, but, instead of turning away, I reached out to it. The smile was so bright that it transfused joy to me. I could almost wish to stay in that mood forever. That was when I stopped crying. I think it took about thirty minutes of mom’s time. With mom’s lullaby, I slept again.

I slept again and woke up. This time, I was a toddler. I smelt the fresh scent of the wet grass because it had just rained. I was outside as mom washed clothes. She sat me down at a little distance away from her, and I played with a car toy. I was really enjoying the play until something else caught my attention. It was so interesting because it came to me itself. It seemed as though I could understand how it felt. It was cold from the rain. Then, it dawned on the adult me, inside the toddler me, it was a snake. It slithered towards me and I crawled towards it. I was trying so hard to stop myself but I would not stop. I tried to touch its head and it dodged my hands. I guess I was too slow. I grasped its tail. It rapped itself around my hands and pointed its head. Then, I knew it was a cobra. I wanted to scream but I burped out laughter instead. I wondered what mom was doing…probably carried away with the clothe she was washing and the song she was singing, sounded as though she was singing praise songs to Jehovah. After playing with the snake for a minute or two, it probably realized that I wouldn’t let it be and it ran off, well, it slithered away.

I woke up and this time, I was pulling off my sandals. It was time for a football match. It was those period in school after which we had finished exams and all we went to school to do was play football. I attended a public secondary school, by the way. I could say I was in JSS 2 by then. I was not the best player in my class. But, I remember I was that kind of player that was chosen immediately after the best player has just been chosen. This was often to compensate for the best player. I remembered how accurate my passes were. Whether long or short passes, mine were always on point. Accurate passes was of utmost importance in those days, especially because the school field was often segmented in several subfields; and 10 different football matches could be going on simultaneously as balls and players often ran across concurrent football matches.

As I dribbled and made a pass, my team’s striker completed it with a goal. Just as I was about to celebrate, the opponents defender cleared my feet off the ground, and soon, I was falling down like a mango tree, with my hands up like the branches. I was sure a wound would accompany the fall, as the school field was without the padding of grass, totally ‘grass-less’. As I floated in the air and gravity pulled me down, I thought about how painful it would be. Just as I was about touching the ground, I felt as though I paused in the air. For a moment, I could swear I saw everyone pause like in a video. Then, an angel held me in her arms and I landed softly on the ground. The most amazing part was that my head landed on the stone which served as the goal post for another concurrent football match. Well, I thought, “why didn’t the angel just moved me away from the stone?” Well, in the end, I secured no injury.

The next time I opened my eyes, I was about crossing the street. A huge truck was packed by the road side and I could not see the other end of the road. All I know was that something fastened my legs towards crossing the road. Before I could tell what was going on, my legs still running fast, a white Toyota car was rushing on the other end, my legs were too fast to be stopped. Just then, I saw two palms on my chest, which pushed me backwards. In a split second, I was off the road and my bum on the floor as the car zoomed past me.

I could swear I saw a thousand different scenarios. Maybe they were dreams, maybe visions, maybe time travel, maybe memories I never thought I had. Not sure exactly, but I know what I saw; what I experienced, was real than a dream. I relived every moment.

The last of them, I saw myself rising from a seat. I was way older, maybe my late thirties. Crowd applauding, hundreds of thousands. I was sure millions were watching behind the cameras. I mounted the podium and opened my mouth to speak. I woke. The sight of the white ceiling greeted me welcome. I moved my legs just to be sure I was truly back.

As I laid down, awed by my experience, I realize that I was never grateful for what I had; not thankful for what I was going through; did not appreciate the dangers that could have happened but never happened; and not believing the great future HE had for me. Even in awareness that I had not paid the month’s rent, I said, “Thank you, YahWeh!”

Episode Finale 5 - Tests and Temptations

It is crazy how one can suddenly become famous by appearing just once on a newspaper, John soon realized. Wherever he went on campus, he noticed the long stare and admirable look at him by those around. A lot of times, some people in groups whispered and pointed at him. In buses, people have occasionally asked, "Are you the one that won the national competition sponsored by the World Bank?"

One afternoon, John got a call from a number he could not identify because it was not on his phone's contact list. Upon picking the call, he could identify that it was Cindy's voice. He had not spoken with her since like forever, John thought. Actually, they had met in class a number of times but they never had any reason to talk. John was amazed when Cindy was speaking on the phone as if they were very good friends. John was not bitter and angry at her anymore. Since he started attending fellowship consistently and studying the Bible, he had no bitterness left in him. So, he found no fault when Cindy said she would like to see him the following day at the department.

The next day, John met Cindy after class. They stood around the lecture theatre's door and discussed. Cindy asked that they go to the cafeteria to have lunch as they continue their conversation, but, John refused. He knew having lunch with Cindy could be awkward in that he's already in a relationship with someone else. He also wondered what on earth could they discuss for so long that they could not finish at the lecture theatre's door. So, he gave an excuse, "I'm sorry I want to work on my final year thesis. There's quite a lot I've got to do today." Cindy offered that they meet another time. John replied that he's not sure if that would be possible. As John was about leaving, Cindy came close to give him a hug. She was already too close that John had to receive the hug, but, he quickly dismissed himself and left. As he walked back to his dormitory, he pondered on all that happened, thinking of Cindy's sudden interest in him.

The same evening, he got a text from Cindy saying she just wanted to check up on him and wishing him a pleasant night. "This is getting really awkward," he told himself. Cindy made several calls trying to arrange a meeting with John. But, he kept giving excuses. On a rainy weekend, John was lying on the bed, thinking about Esther. He had tried to complete a chapter in one of his textbooks, but, could not do so because random thoughts of Esther flew in his heart like Brownian motion. His phone rang. It was Cindy calling. She did not even exchange greetings as she suddenly rushed her words like a machine gun pouring out bullets. John could barely pick her words. All he knew was that she said she could not stop thinking about him. And she ended her speech with "I love you." Somewhere in between, she said she had broken up with her boyfriend months ago because he was cheating on her.

At first, John cut the line instantly. Then, he called her back and all he said was, "I'm sorry. I am in love with someone else...very much in love with her." Before Cindy could complete her statement, "I know you've been avoiding me. Please, let's meet at ..." John cut the line. When she called, he did not bother picking up at all. She called a few more times and stopped calling. Later, when Ben returned, John told Ben about all that had happened, Ben laughed and said, "Now that you're famous and you're like the school's superstar, she loves you." They both had a really big laugh about it.

The semester continued as usual until it was the end of the session and they all graduated from the university. John was to resume his internship program immediately with the World Bank. He had to travel to the nearest headquarters in the country at the capital city. He was lodged at a five-star hotel in the city. All expenses were covered by the internship program. John was excited at the program. He was ready and prepared to put in his best. He resumed work by morning and returned late at night at the hotel.

One night as he returned from work, his head was pounding due to the intense work he had to do at the office. He staggered a little because he was both really tired and very sleepy. He was about bringing out his phone from his pocket to give Esther a call so they could talk till he ate dinner and slept off. His hands was still stuck as it tried to find his way out of his left pocket with the phone, when his sleepy eyes caught an interesting sight. It was a light-complexioned skinny lady in a short blue dress. The heels of her shoes made a sharp sound that pierced his ears and awoke his sleepy mind. The dress was too short and revealing her legs and thighs.

John was still fixed on her lower body when he realized the figure he had seen was walking towards him. As he lifted up his gaze, he saw her face. She was smiling as she flipped her long hair backwards. After a second, which felt like minutes to John, he identified it was his high school mate, Linda. He smiled back and also walked towards her. He was about stretching his hands for a handshake when she open her arms wide open for a hug. She said she was about taking the elevator to her room when she saw him at the entrance and decided to say hello. They took the elevator together catching up on some gist from high school. After they departed for their rooms, John eventually put a call to Esther. He told her about his high school mate whom he met at the hotel.

As John slept that night, he remembered how he and Linda sat next to each other in the same class for four consecutive years in high school. He remembered he had a crush on her, but, he could not tell her. In Linda's case, it was not his timid nature before girls that made him not to tell Linda about his feelings. But, it was because he feared she did not like him that way, and, he does not want to ruin their good friendship. At the hotel, Linda told him she would be staying for a month because of a conference she wanted to attend in the capital city. Every day for the rest of the week, they met at the evening, ordered meals, and ate together in Linda's room, before John returned to his room, gave Esther a call and retired to bed. They both enjoyed their conversations, especially the gossips on other high school mates.

One weekend, Linda came to John's room. John was barely awake. He had hoped to utilize the weekend to have a satisfactory rest from the demanding internship work during the past weekdays. But, he could not refuse Linda from coming in. They discussed as usual. Until suddenly Linda leaned forward to give John a kiss on his cheeks. John could not explain the rush he felt within him. It was as though, an electric current was flowing in his veins, but it did not hurt; it was rather a pleasant electric rush. In a split second of lost reasoning, before Linda could lean back from her kiss gesture, John turned his lips to catch hers and kissed her. Linda placed her hands across John and the kiss continued for a few seconds. It got so intense and it was almost leading to something else before John recovered his senses and pulled away.

He hurriedly stood up and rushed to the wall. He kept saying he was sorry and Linda kept replying that he should not be sorry. She stood up to meet him where he stood. John could not almost resist her welcoming walk, before he shouted, "I'm already dating someone." She placed her body on his as she said, "It does not matter." Her last statement rang in his brain like a huge loud bell. The echoes from the loud ringing bell woke him up from the slumbering temptation. He was shocked that she would not mind having sex with him despite the fact that he was in a serious relationship with someone. Linda noticed the shock in his facial expression and he pushed her slightly away. Linda replied, "I'm also seeing someone and it doesn't matter if two old friends catch up. I know you liked me in high school. It was very evident in your eyes and the way you looked at me. Well, I liked you too. And, it is no crime if we enjoy each other here, even if it is just for one night."

John could not believe his ears. He picked up his shirt, wore it and asked her to leave his room immediately. At first Linda thought it was a joke as she could not believe anyone could resist her charms. As John shouted her to leave the second time, she dashed out angrily, slamming the door behind her as she left.
John was ridden with guilt because of what happened. He could not believe he had carelessly allowed things to go that far with Linda. Tears rolled down his eyes as he thought about how he had betrayed Esther. He fell to his knees as he thought about God. He stretched his hand to his bed and took out his Bible. All he could say was asking for forgiveness and the strength to tell Esther what had happened. Even though he did not have sexual relations with Linda, he felt the guilt as though he had done it. Before it was noon, he packed his bags and told Esther he was coming over to her city for a short visit. He did not explain why. He just said he had something important to tell her.

He arrived at Esther's apartment quite late. He held her hands and fell to his knees as he explained all that happened. Esther pulled her hands off his grasp. She held her hands to her face. She felt a hurt rising in her chest region, to her throat. She took some steps backwards till she sat down. Her eyes was all wet as she said, "Why? John, why?" John could not answer. He held his face down in disappointment. He remained on his knees while Esther remained on her sit with her hands on her chest as though she was trying to stop the hurt from radiating from her heart.

The silence for the next two hours was like eternity of judgment and suffering for John. Esther prayed in her heart as she looked at John. As much as she hurt, the love in her heart for John started curing the hurt gradually. It was a though a ray, then, a beam of light was penetrating and lighting up a thick darkness in her mind. She moved towards John and raised his heads up. John closed his eyes and could not open it as he said sorry, again and again. He probably expected a slap on his cheeks. But, Esther kissed his forehead and used her fingers to open his eyes. John could not believe what was happening. He closed his eyes and opened them again to be sure he was not dreaming. Then, Esther said, "I forgive you. To be fair, you did not fall totally for the temptation. Even according to the Bible, a righteous man falls seven times and rises again. But, you only staggered, and then, you got back to your feet." They both stood up and John put his arms around her. Esther did the same too. John felt a relief from his guilt and Esther was relieved from her hurt.

Christianity EtcDifficult Truth: As A Christian, You Will Pass Through Challenges by TRalph(op): 10:16pm On Jul 17, 2015
Isa 43:1 But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called [thee] by thy name; thou [art] mine.
Isa 43:2 When thou passest through the waters, I [will be] with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee
.

The Redeemed: “I created … formed … redeemed thee and called thee by my name.” yes, you were created and formed by God Almighty. You have given your life to Christ and you have been redeemed. You are a Christian. You have all the riches and glory in Christ Jesus (Eph 3:8, Phil 4:19, Col 1:27) because of Christ’s sacrifice for you on the cross. God loves you (1Jn 4:16) and He dwells in you by the Holy Spirit (Eph 1:13, 1Cor 6:19).

Definite Inevitable Challenges: In the above verses, the word “when”, not “if”, was used. Hence, it is definite that we would pass through the waters, rivers, fire and flames. Therefore, we must stop thinking that just because we are Christians, we are exempted from the challenges of life. It is absolutely normal for us to pass through challenges, whether we caused them or not. Notice also that the verse says “through the rivers … through the fire”. This implies that we have to follow “through” to the very end of the challenge. There are no mini-escape routes anywhere, but, we have to go through to the very end. Whenever, you face a challenge, do not ask “why me?” but ask “why not me?”

Comfort: We have comfort in that the verse says “… I am with thee …” Therefore, we can trust that God knows we are passing through the challenge and He will ensure that “… they shall not overflow thee … ” and “… thou shall not be burnt, neither shall the flame kindle upon thee”.

Faith and Peace: “In this world, you shall have tribulation: be of good cheer, I have overcome the world (Jn 16:33)” “My peace I leave with you … (Jn 14:27)”. God has given His Word; Jesus has spoken. He has overcome the world. Therefore, this is the victory we have, even our faith (1Jn 5:4). It is a must we walk by faith and not by sight (2Cor 5:7). We should not walk by the sight of the challenges around us, but, we should walk faith and peace through the challenges. This is part of what makes us different from unbelievers when they face challenges in life.

Glory: “The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us (Rom 8:18)”. After facing challenges, persecutions, etc. for Christ and Kingdom’s sake, we will receive glory in this world and the world to come (Lk 18:30). Moreover, the glory to come after this world is nothing compared to the present challenges we face. This is part of what makes us different from unbelievers.

Episode 4 - Love Maniac

It was resumption of their final session in the university. For the first time, John was not bothered about the rowdy nature of resumptions anymore. It could have been because he was happy this was the last year in school. It could have been because of the enthusiasm to see Esther. Or, it could have been both. But, John knew the greater reason was because he was meeting Esther on the day of resumption.

John arrived early at school and so did Esther. After settling in their hostels, they met that morning at the cafeteria. They greeted each other with a hug. They felt so glad to have met. It was as though they could not stop talking. There was always something to talk about. John felt Esther was funny. He was mesmerized with her bright smile. Esther had curled her long dark hair, which made John to like it the more. They chatted and did not realize how far time had gone by. John's phone rang. It was Ben calling to know where Ben was. Not long after, John and Esther left the cafeteria and he walked her to her room.

On getting to the room, John was so excited. He told Ben he had something important to tell him. Ben had a hint that Esther and John kept in touch throughout the break. However, Ben was still surprised when John said, "I think I have grown strong emotions for Esther... I think I ... Ehmmm... Love her." "Do you know what you're saying?" Ben replied. However, he did not want John to feel bad. He realized how excited John was, and, he did not want to crush the excitement. At the same time, he knew it was serious because John never knew how to handle emotional matters properly. Ben smiled and added, "No wonder you have been excited all day like honeybee that found nectar; you've been flapping your wings like a butterfly around a flower; wagging your tail like a dog playing fetch." Ben concluded with, "You know you have to pray about it, right?"

John knew Ben was right to have suggested prayer. John understood that as a Christian, he had to always be led by the Holy Spirit. He had to know what the will of God was and find the courage to follow the same. He had also learnt from fellowship meetings that one of the ways to identify the will of God on any matter is to pray about it. Despite all he knew, John was afraid to pray. He had cultivated so much emotion for Esther that he was scared to let her go. John wondered if he prayed and he perceives God's will to be a no towards Esther, it would be too difficult to let her go.

One day, John and Esther were walking towards the library as they met one of John's classmates. As they exchanged greetings, John hesitated as he introduced Esther. He did not know who to say she was, whether a friend or something more. If he says she's a friend, he knew he wanted something more than friendship with her. He could not say she was his girlfriend either, because, he had not asked her out. He struggled in his mind till he got a word to use. "Meet my close friend Esther," John said to his classmate as they exchanged pleasantries and shook hands. That was when John knew he had to take Ben's advice seriously. He had to pray and be sure of God's will, so that he would confidently be able to either call Esther his close friend or his girlfriend.

One Sunday evening, John stayed behind at the fellowship building to pray. He did not know how to go about it. He just knelt down, closed his eyes and spoke from his heart. It was more like an explanation than a request. He just kept talking back and forth about how much he loved Esther and how much he wanted to know the will of God. After a few minutes, he left for his hostel. The following morning, during his devotion, he made the same prayer again after he had read a portion of the Bible. He knew he had a feeling strong inside him that made him sure dating Esther was God's will. However, he was not so sure because he thought it could just be reinforced emotions for Esther. So, in his subsequent prayers, he begged God for a sign. John so much wanted a mysterious sign from anywhere that he could interpret. Nothing of such was coming. Until a Sunday morning, the student pastor preached about hearing from God. It was then that John knew that the still voice inside a Christian is the voice of the Holy Spirit. This made John convinced of what God's will was. This confirmation of God's will should have resolved all of John's worries, but, there was another problem.

John decided to ask Esther out on a Saturday evening. He had planned to take her to the school garden where the fellowship get-together held last session. This was because they first spoke to each other at the school garden. They discussed on a lot of things that evening. John was afraid of starting up the main conversation of the day because of his worry. Even though he knew for sure Esther had feelings for him, he was still somehow scared of how she might react when he asked her out. Eventually, when it was getting late and it was obviously time to leave, John had no choice than to throw his fears away because he did not want to waste a perfectly good evening. John started. In a long time, he had not stammered before a lady. But this time, his speech was filled with lots of stammers. He explained how he had emotions for Esther, how he prayed and how he was convinced about dating her and how he was scared of how she might react if he asked her out. To John's amazement, Esther was smiling all through.

In the end, when he said, "Esther, I love you." She started laughing so much that she fell off her seat. John quickly reached for her before she fell down completely. So, they stood up in each other's arms. John was not so sure of what to think this time. They could not let go of the hug. Esther was still in her laughing mode as she replied, "I love you, too." John felt so relieved. Esther added, "I had already prayed about it and was convinced all through the holiday. I waited for you to make the move all these while. Not knowing that you were scared. And, that was why I laughed." John felt even more relieved. She rested her head on John's shoulder and the hug lasted even longer. John walked her back to her hostel.

That day was the happiest day of John's life. He could not wait to break the news to Ben. He was so excited. He met Ben and Rachael in the room. He told both of them the news. They were both happy for him. Ben teased John by calling him, "Lover boy." John jumped to his bed as he said, "I'm a lover boy. I'm glad to be in love. It feels so good to be in love and be loved in return."

Throughout the semester, John and Esther did almost everything together. They played, read and ate together. It was almost impossible to meet John without finding Esther around. Towards the end of the semester, John's dad lost his job. Things got financially tight at home. John was not receiving as much allowance as he did before. Ben supported John as a friend would.

At the resumption of the second semester, a list was pasted at the department. It contained a few names. John's name was included. It was list of exceptionally excellent students qualified to take a nationwide test for a scholarship to sponsor the student for a Master’s degree in any desired university in the country. A monetary prize reward was to be given to the top three candidates. It also had an internship program with the World Bank and a possible job offer as well. John was very happy. Five students had been shortlisted from his school. About three hundred students would be taking the test nationwide. He knew he had to prepare even harder. On completing the information on the notice board, he realized a fee had to be paid. That was when the financial implication dawned on him. His sharp mind had calculated the entry fee, travel cost, feeding and accommodation for the two-day program. He knew he could not afford it. He felt very sad. His hope was dashed instantly.

When he told Esther, she assured him not to worry at all. She said she would pay for all the costs that would be incurred for the program. John was really surprised Esther could raise such a large amount of money for him. He could not hide the joy he felt, as he hugged her, lifter her up and gave a kiss on her head. Ben was very happy for John that he could participate in the program.

John prepared so hard for the test. He could not bear to think the money Esther had dropped would go to waste if he lost. He prayed every day that he should win. Soon, it was the weekend for the program. John went in his black suit. He was not intimidated when he heard the other candidates were the best students in their own universities. After the test, the grand speech and banquet the following day, the winners were announced. John emerged the best student in the test. The runner ups were from different universities in the country. John was so happy that he called Esther immediately to tell her about the good news.

He arrived at school the next day. John became so famous as his name and picture appeared on the national newspaper as the first prize winner. He had been interviewed by television stations after the program which aired live that evening. He received the cash prize the following week. Esther and John had a personal celebration. Ben, Rachael and Esther organized a little celebration for John. John was quite glad he had friends who he could share his up and down moments with.

Episode 3 - Turning Around

It was resumption again. The beginning of a new session was always annoying to John. He considered the new students as nuisance to the school because they were always everywhere. He always thought the crowd of new students were as pieces of tiny paper littering the whole ground. Those new students would always ask silly questions about things in the school. The only kind of question John felt obligated to answer a wandering new student is the question to help the student locate a classroom or a building. Ben always tried his best to correct this notion. But, John was consistently adamant. "When I was a new student, I made good use of the student handbook and the school maps. So, I don't need to ask silly questions from anyone," that has always been John's reply.

This time, John was even angrier because of what happened late last session. Cindy's cynical reply to his relationship proposal and her abrupt dismissal of him had left a huge black scaly scar in his mind. His anger was fueled when he spotted Cindy in front of the departmental office. She had just alighted from a black jeep. A dark big bearded guy with small eyes was driving. He was in black suit with red tie. She had leaned sideways for a kiss before she alighted. "That must be the rich boyfriend," John said to himself. Ben did not recognize the real cause of John's anger expressed in his eyes. He assumed John was angry because of the new students roaming about. So, Ben did not notice anything unusual.

A large crowd had gathered in front of the departmental notice board to check the results to the examinations last semester. John and Ben had managed to struggle through the crowd to the front of the list containing the results for their class. John had all As in 8 courses. Yet he was angry because he did not score 90s but 80s. Additionally, he checked Cindy's grades and realized she had 6 As. He had wished she did not pass that much. At the same time, he knew he taught her well, so, it was almost impossible for her to fail. Ben also had 6 As and 2 Bs. This time Ben knew something must be wrong because John's face was fuming with disgust. It was as if his nostrils was breathing out smoke and fire. Ben could not help but ask, "John, what is wrong with you?" John said, "Let's leave, please. I'll explain when we get back to the room."

Ben was surprised to hear all John had to say. He wondered why John did not mention a word about it to him. It was not time to play the blame game, Ben thought to himself. However, he could not help but talk to John about the hate that was bottled deep inside. "John, you can't hate her because she doesn't want to date you. The hatred and bitterness doesn't affect her. It destroys you; it eats you up till there's nothing left inside you but hate for all women. This is not the path you want to follow. Trust me." Ben sighed. He added, "More so, God says we should love one another with agape love."

John was not absolutely sure if all he heard made any effect on how he felt. This he was sure of, he felt lighter in his heart after he told his best friend all that transpired between Cindy and himself. That evening was the first day of fellowship in the semester. Academic work had not started, so, John had no excuse to miss fellowship meeting. Throughout the service, John felt as if all those who spoke on the altar knew his mind - the drama presentation was on forgiveness; the choir's song was titled "Letting Go of the Past"; the welcome banner read "Fresh Start". Finally, the student pastor preached and made a statement that struck John really hard like lightning "God could bring about new beginnings if only you would just allow God."

Throughout the semester, John was not bitter, neither did he carry hatred around like a huge bag of sand and stones around his neck dragging him down. John did not develop any crush for any other lady throughout the semester. Even John was surprised at himself. Ben told him that his consistent attendance to fellowship meetings had caused it. John refuted, but, he could not really deny that it was a contributing factor. John was so consistent at fellowship meetings that he joined the ushering group. Ben always teased him that he was the tallest amongst the ushers. John usually smiled and added that he was the also the most handsome. John had a pretty great semester. He had all As in all his courses as usual. He felt good about himself, those around him and his Creator.
In the passage of time, the session ended, which was the end of 300 level. John, Ben and Rachael got together to celebrate the end of the session. They drank Coke and ate some snacks. They were excited that the beginning of the next session would be the last session for them as undergraduates.

Ben's mobile phone beeped. It was the alarm he had set for the fellowship get together that evening. The event was to take place at the school's garden. The get together was a social event organized as thanksgiving to God for the successful completion of the session. John, Ben and Rachael wished they had not eaten before attending the event. This was because there was so much food available to eat. People sang, some danced, some played the puppet, some read poems and so on. It was all fun. After a while, it was not so much fun when John felt isolated as Ben and Rachael took their punch drinks, sat under a tree alone and were engrossed in their love-talks as usual.

John strolled around till his eye caught something interesting. It was a tall dark lady with long dark hair. She was a familiar face. He noticed he had seen her singing amidst the choir; possibly taken a couple of solos in church and led a number of worship sessions. This evening, at the get together, it seemed she had exceptionally long legs. As he checked her out, stylishly and subconsciously, with the side of his eyes, he noticed a spider climbing up her flower-designed dress. If it was a small spider, he would have easily ignored it. But, the spider was considerably large. He hesitated in telling her because he felt it would be somewhat embarrassing to himself, since, he had been staring at her. More so, he noticed the spider when it was at her bust region. After a careful consideration of all the factors involved, he decided to keep shut.

John took a peek at Ben and Rachael where they were seated. Just as he turned his head around, he heard a scream. It was the voice of a lady. He turned around again to see she was screaming with her hands held up in the air. She stood up from the tree root, where she sat, and was jumping and shaking her body in an attempt to shake off the spider, which was by her neck region by now. Her friends around her could not help her as they were all afraid to remove the spider. John did not hesitate. He ran towards her and pulled off the spider with his index finger and his thumb. He flung it towards the bush nearby. She had to catch her breath before she could even say thank you. Her friends just kept laughing because of her hysteric reaction.

John turned around, wanting to go back to his seat, she said, "Can I at least know your name?" John turned around and said, "I am John." "I am Esther," she replied. The conversation kept going. In no time, they were alone, seated on the tree root where she was before. John never hiccupped or stammered as they spoke. He was as fluent as ever. John knew he was not under any pressure talking with her. They exchanged phone numbers. After the get together was over, he could not just leave her so he walked her to her room, continuing their discussion. He wished he had known her long ago because he really enjoyed her company.

John travelled home for the sessional break. Throughout the break, John kept in touch with Esther. They called often and texted always. They were enthusiastic for resumption because they wanted to talk physically once more. John knew he had developed emotions for Esther and he suspected she had done the same too.

Episode 2 - Crush and be Crushed

"John, when do you want to travel home?" Ben asked. "I am still thinking about it. I don't think I would travel early this time", John replied. Ben and John were still stretching on their beds. It was the night after their final examination in second semester 200 level. They slept as though they were knocked down with a powerful sedative. They had several sleepless nights studying for their examinations, so, they slept for hours to compensate for the sleepless hours. However, hunger had cut short the sweet long sleep short. Ben let out a wide and long yawn while John responded with a louder yawn and a stomach rumble. Without wasting much time, they knew it was time to visit the cafeteria for their meals. Unanimously and simultaneously, they stood up and got dressed to go out.

As they ate, their stomachs rejoiced and it was evident in their faces. Ben thought within himself that it was the best moment to ask John the question that has long been in his heart throughout the examination periods. Without hesitation, John asked, "Since I have known you ... since 100 level, we always read together. So, you would agree with me why I should be concerned that you didn't read with me throughout this examination. Why?" The food John swallowed got stuck midway in his throat. He was confused whether to answer Ben correctly or not. He had a plan and now wasn't the time to reveal his plan. "This plan must stay hidden, I have to prove a point to him that I am not feeble", he thought to himself. At the same time, he owed it to his best friend a valid explanation.

Just as the swallowed food got stuck halfway, he decided to tell the truth halfway. After forcing the stuck food down his throat by gulping from the chilled glass cup of water before him, he spoke "You see ... you bring Rachael along with you to read most times. I feel oppressed a little because I don't have a girlfriend. More so, I feel like I sometimes innocently interfere with your personal discussions with Rachael." This was quite surprising to Ben. He was surprised at John's response because this was far from what Ben suspected to be the reason for John's action. Ben imagined his reading pattern was the cause for John's action. Ben was accustomed to reading only for five to six hours, at most, at a stretch while John could read for much longer. He also asked a lot of questions from John while they read together. He assumed these were the reasons. John made Ben realize it was neither of those reasons. He further explained that Ben's consistent questions help him to understand the notes and topics better. Ben also explained that John was not unduly interrupting his conversations with Rachael. He also apologized if he and Rachael had subconsciously made John feel oppressed, but, it was never their intentions. Ben was relieved that the issue was cleared amicably. John was rather relieved his plans were not revealed.

Few days later, John was still on campus. He had not travelled home for the holidays. On a cool afternoon, he laid on his bed, looking to the ceiling and thinking about Cindy, he decided to call her.
"Hello, how are you?"
"Who is speaking?"
"It is I, John. Don't you have my phone number anymore?"
"Ok, John. What can I do for you?"
"I just wanted to check up on you. Ummmm ... and .... to ask if we can meet this evening ... provided you are not busy."
"You guessed right. I am busy. We can't meet."
"What day can we meet? I have something important to tell you."
"Ok. Let's meet this evening at the café."
"You said you were busy."
"Don't worry about that."
Just before John could say thank you and goodbye, the call ended. This left John wondering whether Cindy had ended the call or it was bad reception. John also pondered on why Cindy couldn't recognize his number. "Did she delete my number from her phone?" he thought. The third and most troubling thing to John was the hostility in her voice. "All the time we read together for exams, Cindy never talked to me this way" John said to himself.

John felt glad that he was meeting Cindy. He thought, "All my plans are going accordingly. Soon, I will also have a girlfriend." When it was about the time they had agreed to meet, John got into a white T-shirt and a pair of blue jeans. He wore white sneakers and dark shade glasses. He took a look at the mirror to admire himself. He used his thumb and his index finger to rub his mustache down to his goatee, before, he took a turn and left the room. They met at the café. There were lots of empty tables at the café that day because school was on holidays and most students had returned home. John picked the table beside the window for them to sit. But, Cindy felt it was a bad idea. She didn't want passersby to see them eating together. So, she asked that they move to another seat far away from the window, and even, inconspicuous to anyone who comes into the café. John couldn't decipher Cindy's reason for the seat she chose. He just went on with her.
They made their order and John paid for it. As they ate, John pondered on when was the perfect time to deliver his important speech. Over the past few weeks, he had searched his dictionary for certain words and thought of several manners by which he would make his feelings known to Cindy. He finally had a mental picture of how he thought it would go. However, his heart was beating too fast that he feared he could not stick to his plan. All the words he had planned to use ran out of his brain. He was lost and empty in his brain that it was beginning to show on his face. Cindy had to ask him, "What's wrong with you?" "Nooo ... noooo ... nothing" he replied. "Ok. What is the important thing you have for me?" Cindy said. This time, he couldn't stammer. His tongues failed to move. His brain was empty. His heart was racing. The only thought in his head was, "Oh my God, please, help me."

He forced himself to calm down a bit. In a bid to buy more time and to search for words to say, he chewed the food in his mouth a little longer than usual and drank water to push it down his throat. Eventually, when all his tactics were exhausted, he opened his mouth to speak, "For quite a long time, I have had ... feelings ... for you. Ummmm ... I didn't know how to approach you to let you know how I felt until we got closer during this examination period. We read together and I got to like you even more. Cindy, I like you a lot ... I looo ... love ... you. I think we ... " Cindy initially rested her hands on the table. As John spoke, she already knew where the conversation was heading towards. She sat upright and rested her back on the chair. She shook her head a couple of times as John spoke, but, he did not notice. John's head was down as he spoke; his eyes were locked on the table, moving between the cups and the plates.

John lifted his head up when Cindy interrupted his speech. He was expecting to see a somewhat relaxed and smiling face. He thought his speech was having a pleasant effect on Cindy. He assumed his feeling was mutual. His assumption was based on how Cindy related to him during the times they read together - she tapped his shoulder to get his attention rather than call his name; she placed her hands on his shoulders whenever he was explaining the notes and topics to her; while studying, their eyes occasionally met, and they smile to each other whenever this happened; while walking to and from the library, they sometimes bumped shoulders together; she might have also held his hands a number of times while they discussed; she called him often, even at odd times of the night during the examination period. On seeing the uneasiness Cindy wore on her face, John was rather perplexed. He knew something must be wrong.

"Hey, please just hold it there. Hmmm ... I am surprised you are telling me all these. I thought you meant something really important. It's best that I make it clear to you. John, I cannot date you. I have a boyfriend." She read the amazement on John when she said she had a boyfriend. So, she continued, "He graduated five years ago. He works in a bank in this city. He usually comes around in his car to pick me up after class." In John's head, it was as if the world stood still; even his heart must have stopped and stood still. Cindy kept on talking, "Even if I do not have a boyfriend, what makes you think I will date an undergraduate like you? Well, except if the student is very rich, and I mean, very rich. This would mean his parents are top politicians in the country or they own a multimillion-dollar company. Then, I would consider. It is obvious I need to take care of myself, and, this costs more money than the stipends students can offer."

A loud bell rang in John's head and the echo gave him a headache. "John, I read with you only because you are brilliant and you can teach me the things I do not know. We are friends and I wish we continue that way. To be sincere with you, I decided to meet with you because my boyfriend had a football match to watch. I know how engrossed he is when his favourite club team plays and I would rather be anywhere else than be with him while he watches the football match. If you don't mind, I will like to take my leave now as the football match would be coming to an end soon. Thanks for the meal."

Cindy stood up while she was still completing her last sentence. John's eyes were as red as crimson. He had to force himself not to cry. He could not utter any word. The bell sound kept on echoing in his head, intensifying his headache. Just as Cindy stood up, Rachael walked into the café with two of her friends. Her fast-moving eyes sighted John and she waved to him. John forced out a smile from his red-eyed thunder-stricken face in response to Rachael's wave. Rachael and her friends picked a seat and continued their conversation.

Cindy walked out of the café while John was still digesting all he heard from her. As much as he prevented himself from crying, he couldn't help it as a cold tear rolled down his hot chin from his left eye. He knew it was time to leave, or else, he would embarrass himself with sobs that others would notice. Then, he remembered he had brought a dark-shade goggles with him. He used it to cover up his tear-filled eyes. On getting to his room, he was glad not to have met Ben. He laid on his bed and wondered. He felt pain and anger all at once. He felt he was deceived. He felt Cindy took advantage of his emotions for her selfish gain. As he pondered on all these, tears kept rolling down his cheeks. Suddenly, he heard the sound of the door knob moving. He knew it must be Ben. He quickly cleaned his face and pretended to be asleep while Ben came inside. In his pretense, he decided he would travel home the following day as there was nothing more keeping him on campus during the holidays.

Fickle Heart

Episode 1 - Crush Maniac

It was a week to the commencement of examinations, John was returning from the library with his best friend Benjamin as they met Cindy, a classmate of theirs, on her way to the library. While she was still afar off, John had sighted her. She was always easy to notice because of her likeness for the colours red and pink. She was always wearing either red or pink shoes and tops, with her brightly colored red or pink lips. In days when she decided not to use her usual red or pink lipstick, her deeply coloured red lips did the job for her. This time, her lips were pink-coloured and her shoes were pink, so also was her hand bag carrying her books. Some considered her cliche dressing style as awkward but to John it was not. It had not been awkward since John had developed a crush for Cindy since the beginning of the academic session. His heart was racing as she came closer, with every step, his heart paced faster and his head pounded at the sound of the heels of her shoes hitting the floor.

"Good afternoon", Ben said to Cindy. "Good afternoon", Cindy replied. "Hhhha...hiii...iiii" John said. "Thank goodness I met you, I will be needing your Financial Accounting textbook tonight." In a heartbeat, John brought his back bag forward, supported it with his laps and zipped open his back bag and gave it to her. Without saying a thank you, she walked off even before John could completely zip up his bag or so he thought. By the time John's head was up, she was no longer in front of him. John turned around towards the library and found her walking in her high heels and tight black trousers. Ben had to tap John before he gained consciousness and realized he had been staring too long and it was not so appropriate. He lifted up his bag in an attempt to strap his bag to his back again and all his books fell off. It was then he realized he had not really zipped his bag.

"If you like her so much, why don't you go tell her?" Ben challenged John. John shrudded and shook his head in a negative response with a sad face he wore over his square-shaped head. "You are the only person I know to be intelligent and yet timid. You can speak before professors and doctors in class presentations, but, when you are in front of a girl, you melt like ice before fire", Ben added, "Just to say 'hi', you stutter like a stammerer ... Hmmm, I pity you." John was the best in his class. He always aced the hardest courses and broke the records. Even at his second year in college, most of his classmates and even some lecturers considered it a high possibility of he beating the highest grade point ever in the Department of Management and Accounting.

John was so depressed at Ben's talk that he picked each book slowly and put them in his bag. Ben felt bad at his words because they might have been too harsh on John, yet, he felt maybe, just maybe, it was the push John needed to actively speak to a girl for once in his life. After Ben helped John in picking a few books that had fallen, he then put his arms around John and gradually pulled him towards the library in an attempt to make him talk to Cindy. John knew Ben's intention, so, he bent and turned to escape his head and shoulders out of Ben's grasp. "Don't say I never encouraged you. I did my best to help you", Ben said. John replied, "That is easy for you to say when you have got Rachael since ... like forever ... as long as I can remember."

Rachael was the reason they had to leave the library early. Ben and Rachael had been dating since High School. They grew up in the same neighbourhood, attended the same schools and were in the same college. It was like friendship grew into relationship. Everyone who knew Ben knew Rachael because they were always together. This time, she had a slight fever, and so, she did not leave her hostel to read with Ben. She had told Ben to help get some medicine for her fever while returning from the library. So, Ben had to leave the library early because Rachael needed the medicine earlier than he thought. Ben convinced John to walk with him, if not, John would still have been reading. "At least, I do not stammer before Rachael", Ben defended himself with a smile.

"One day, I am going to talk to Cindy. I will tell her how I feel", John said as he nodded his head with some form of assurance and used his left thumb and index fingers to wipe his mustache and pulled them down to his touch his goatee. Ben countered him immediately, "That was the same thing you said about Priscilla from fellowship, Stella from Department of Economics, Helen from also from fellowship, Esther our classmate ... should I continue? The list goes on. Seems you have got crush on about one or two ladies every semester." John paused for a while. It seemed he had a quick flash of all those he had affection for in the past. He wondered about what he had liked about each of the girls in the past. John responded by saying, "Priscilla started dating the fellowship president; Stella was too short for me; Helen was already in a relationship with the fellowship secretary; Esther was too fat for me. Ben, you see, it isn't my fault at all." "Keep giving yourself excuses," Ben replied as he stepped into the pharmacy to buy Rachael some medications.

On getting to Rachael's room, Ben was surprised to see that Rachael was much better than she sounded over the phone. She said she would not be needed the medications anymore because she felt much better. Ben was glad to see her healthy. Ben and Rachael were sitting on the bed, facing each other and holding each other's hands, they conversed softly with each other that Ben could barely hear them both. John was accustomed to their mannerism of conversing, so he immediately picked a motivational book from Rachael's shelf to peruse. He had read all the books in her shelf, so, he just flipped through the pages. Soon he was bored and he drifted off in his thoughts. John's sitting position was such that he was backing John. So, only Rachael could see John, but she was deeply into her usual love conversations with Ben. Occasionally, John would turn to look at them when they chuckled or giggled so loud. They were both carried away and did not know how time flew by till it was evening.

John, on the other hand, was stuck on Cindy in his mind. He felt a deep need to give her a call just to ask how the she was enjoying the textbook. As much as he wanted to call, he thought to himself the possibility of embarrassing himself by stammering over the phone. It became very obvious he was lost in his thoughts as Rachael noticed him staring at the empty yellow wall of her room. Rachael was quick to ask, in her thin sonorous voice, "What are you thinking about?" Ben took a sharp turn to look at John. It took few seconds for John to find a reply. The few seconds felt like hours as John was bent on concealing his real thoughts. He knew if he said that Cindy was on his mind, he would receive another round of lecture from Ben about being bold enough to ask a lady out, and, another lecture from Rachael about dating serious christians alone. John was not ready for all of that this time, so within the few seconds of silence, he was still searching for an explanation to give Rachael.

John noticed the tiny sheet of paper plastered on the yellow wall beside the small elevated wooden bookshelf, it contained Rachel's lectures timetable. "Yes!" John shouted in his mind. He knew he had located his escape plan. He quickly replied, "I was just wondering at how busy your schedule for classes are?" "You've got so much to do everyday. Two to three hours per class! Who does that?" John added. He knew his reply was not convincing enough. Ben thought within himself, "Was this the first time of John seeing her lectures timetable? He obviously was thinking of something else." Rachael's thoughts were closely the same as Ben's, "The position of John's heads and eyes were markedly different from the sheet of paper containing the lectures timetable. What on earth was he thinking?" The questioning looks on Ben's and Rachael's faces further verified his thoughts. In order to avoid further questions, just before Rachael's quick already opened mouth could send another bullet of question, he picked up his phone as if he just got a text and stood up briskly walking outside as if he wants to make an urgent call. Ben and Rachael continued their closeup conversations as if nothing had happened.
Few minutes later, John came in and announced he was leaving. "Where to?" Ben asked. "To the library," he replied. "I want to finish up a few notes", John added. "But, we spent five hours this morning!" Ben said. "Anyway, that is why you lead the class." Rachael added. In no time, he picked his bag and was at the door. He waved his hands to signal goodbye as Ben said, "Do not forget fellowship tonight by 8pm." He knew how John gets easily carried away by books so he had to give him a reminder. John just nodded a positive response as he closed the door and went off. He knew he had not told them the main reason for returning to the library. The call he deguised to make was eventually made and that was the reason for going back to the library; Ben and Rachael were not aware of this also.

At the fellowship, Ben was surprised not to have seen John around. He should not have been too surprised because it was habitual of John not to attend fellowships meetings during examination periods. Nonetheless, Ben expected John to have been around because he had particularly reminded him to come before he left for the library. Ben put a phone call to John but he was not picking up. Ben concluded he was probably asleep but was even more surprised to have returned to the room and found that John was not in. He made another set of calls to John, but, no answer. That night, John returned quite late to the room and all he said to Ben was, "I was reading."

Christianity EtcLearning How To Love And Forgive One Another Easily by TRalph(op): 8:06am On Jul 10, 2015
1Th 4:9 But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.
In several verses like the one above, we are admonished to love one another and to show love to our neighbors. Jesus Christ used a parable to explain the importance of helping people, even a stranger (Lk 10:29-37). Our God is Love personified (1Jn 4:16). We have no option or other nature but to demonstrate love.

Why do I despise that brother or sister?
Why have I chosen not to forgive?
Why am I so unwilling to let go?
Why did I decide not to help?
Why did I turn a blind eye to that bad situation?
Why did I turn a deaf ear to that plea?
Why do I always feel hatred?
How many times have you asked yourself these questions or even harsher ones? It is a push in you asking for a demonstration of love.

Whenever we are faced with the question of demonstrating love, we look outside or inside or around.

Rom 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
The love of God has already been shed abroad in our hearts. Christians do not need a baptism of love or impartation of love from above or from another person. The love of God is already there in your heart. You just need to find expression to the inborn nature within you. God is Love and He already dwells in you (1Jn 4:16). Nobody can know love without knowing God and nobody can know God without love. That is why you cannot but love your brother (1Jn 4:20).

This same love is a fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22). That is why this love is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit (Rom 5:5). You find expression to this love by renewing your mind with the Word of God (Rom 12:2).

Looking on the inside of you for this Love or looking on the outside or around you for the demonstration of this Love is not the solution. Rom 5:6 makes us to understand that the way or reason love is shed in our hearts is because while we were yet sinners, Christ in due season dies for us. Therefore, as we meditate on the Love of God demonstrated through Christ who died for our sin (past, present and future – once for all, Heb 10:10), we find it easy to forgive, let go, help others and demonstrate love because we see how Christ did these and more for us freely.

As we focus on Christ’s love, the Author and Finisher of our Faith (Heb 12:2), we realize we are transformed to love like Him – who forgave a woman caught in the act of adultery without lifting a stone against her (Jn 8:3-11) and who went about doing good (Act 10:38). As we keep on looking unto Christ, all the things that pertain to life and godliness, which has been freely given to us (2Pet 1:3), would begin to manifest effortlessly.

The wisdom, knowledge, understanding and application of the Word of God can only come after a deep study of the Word. Christianity Etc7 Tips To Help Christians When Passing Through Inevitable Challenges by TRalph(op): 3:11am On May 18, 2015
This is a sequel to [Article-Accepting the Hard and Difficult Truth As a Christian, You Will Pass Through Inevitable Challenges by T-Ralph - http://www.teachingoftheword.com/show_article.php?article_id=151]. I recommend that you read that first, if you haven’t, before reading this.

Here are a few tips that can be of immense help when passing through
challenges as a Christian:

1. Be Receptive: Accept the challenge as a normal phase in your Christian journey whether you caused it or not. If you indeed read the first sequel from the link above, you will understand this point better. Do not keep asking “why me?” Ask “why not me?” Accept the challenge. However, do not accept defeat. As a Christian, you have a victorious life in Christ Jesus (1Jn 5:4). So, accept the challenge and rise over it; do not accept defeat.

2. Be Joyous: I understand and agree that facing a challenge (heartbreak, loss of loved ones or property, disappointment and so on) can make you so depressed and sad; I have been through it myself. But, you have to be joyous. This is because the joy of the Lord is your strength (Neh 8:10). You cannot afford to lose your joy because you will lose your strength. Being happy is based on your good circumstances, but, being joyous is based on the Holy Spirit. Joy is a fruit of the spirit (Gal 5:22). Hence, tap into the Spirit for the joy to strengthen you through the challenge.

3. Be Hopeful: Hope brings confidence (Heb 10:35). Hope is a positive expectation of good (as popularly quoted by Pastor Joseph Prince www.josephprince.org and www.josephprince.com). We can learn from Abraham, who against hope, yet still hoped (Rom 4:18) till he received the promise of a son even at a terribly old age. Therefore, even if the challenge has brought you down several times, rise up again in hope because hope will birth faith in you (1Cor 13:13). Hope will not make you ashamed (Ps 119:116, Rom 5:5).

4. Be Positive: As much as the challenge tries to bring negativity around you, it is time to let out from within, the positivity in your spirit. Therefore, speak positivity, not negativity. Speak out the Word of God consistently. Whenever the challenge brings out negativity, speak the countering part of the Word of God. This is why you need to study and be filled with the Word (Col 3:16).
Do not relent even if it seems nothing changes. For example, when sadness/depression of a failed exam comes to mind, speak forth “What I lay my hands upon shall prosper (Gen 39:23, Josh 1:7, etc)”, “I am a success (Josh 1:cool”, etc. you get?

5. Be Prayerful: Ask and you shall receive (Mat 7:7). Ask till your joy is full (Jn 16:24). Never give up on prayer. Even when it seems prayers are not changing anything, prayer changes you at least (Quote by oluwamary – http://www.teachingoftheword.com/quotes.php?user=7 Prayer may not change all things for you but surely changes you for all things.). Keep praying and asking and praising God till everything changes for good as you pass through to the end of the challenge.

6. Be Patient: The trial of your faith works patience in you (Jam 1:3). Sincerely, there is no other way to learn/demonstrate the gift of patience than through challenges. Abraham waited for at least 25 years until he was 100 years old for the promise child (Gen 12:4, 21:5). Patience is a vital key in the Christian life. We need patience before obtaining the promise (Heb 10:36). Do not think in your head that it is time for you to overcome the challenge. Just wait and keep waiting until the “appointed time” for the end of the challenge to come and the promise to be fulfilled. As you follow the tips above by being receptive, joyous, hopeful, patient and prayerful, remember to be patient, as in very very patient. Just as a close friend of mine @oluwamary (http://www.teachingoftheword.com/get_search.php?profile=oluwamary) says, when your patience is exhausted, switch to long-suffering (Gal 5:22).

7. Be Attentive: There are certain things that we will never learn without going through challenges in life as a Christian. So, be attentive to the Holy Spirit and learn the necessary lessons as soon/promptly as possible. One of such lessons is patience (as mentioned above). As you go through the challenge, the Holy Spirit will make you stronger and comfort you (Jn 14:16). This same strength is useful for further challenges and also, helping others.
Likewise, the comfort you have received during your own challenge is useful in comforting others during their own challenges too (2Cor 1:4). Just like I am doing right now. *smiles*

I believe these tips are useful for you in that challenge you are currently going through.

May the Lord continue to lead us and teach us in His Way. Amen.

Episode 5 (Finale) - Righteousness by Faith

They were still trying to recover from the shock of last night’s incident as they woke up the next day with strange looks on their faces. George dressed in his blue suit for work. Just as he drove out of the automatic gates, he suddenly saw an old woman in front of his car. George slammed the brake as his head jerked forward and his heart skipped for fear. He almost screamed but he calmed down when he realize that it was not a monster. It was their silent neighbor in front on his car. George did not really know what to say to her as he was still glued to his car seat. He wondered why she had appeared in front of his car this morning. “What on earth should I do?” George thought to himself. “I think respect demands that I to get down to meet her,” George thought further. He was even more scared as she started walking towards him with her bent back, staggering with each step towards the driver’s door. When she got close to his car window, she gave the glass a knock. He couldn’t alight anymore, so he gently rolled down the side window. Her first words were “I know what happened last night.” George heart skipped. “It was caused by the spirits of the children sacrificed for money by the rich man,” she added. At this time, Sade was already walking towards them because she noticed the gates had not closed in a long time. The woman said, “I have a few things that I can give you to chase the spirits off.” Sade arrived and all she heard was “...chase the spirits”. So Sade exclaimed, “Spirits!” Since everyone around knew the history of the house, Sade knew instinctively that the old woman must be talking about helping them with the situation of the house. She did not even greet the old woman before she asked, “What do you want to give us?” She said she had some candles and fuming agents known to ward off evil spirits. “No wonder she had them lit on her balcony the other night,” Sade and George thought to themselves. George said “Thank you” to her as he waved goodbye to drive off to work. Sade was skeptical about using such things, so, she told the old woman that she would come over to get it later when she needs it. She said this so as just to be tactful.
Sarah went late to school that day. She was reproved for coming late, but, that did not bother her at all. Her state of mind was definitely far from being ready for class, let alone, bothered about being reprimanded for late-coming. All through class, she gazed at the white board without seeing any letters or numbers on the board. At a time, the white board turned black and she saw images of the blood-stained children. But, she quickly snapped out of it. Teachers taught and all she could hear were the sounds of the monster that appeared in her sleep. She was definitely not concentrating in class. The fright from last night and other similar nights left her in absolute dismay. During the break period, she had an idea amidst her hazy thoughts. She quickly located Matthew, dragging him into a corner and said, “Teach me how to pray.” Puzzled by her request, Matthew replied, “Just say what you wish for and end it with ‘In Jesus Name’.” Sarah was surprised that it was that simple because she had never made any conscious prayer before, so she asked him just to be sure, “That simple?” Matthew felt he needed to explain better despite the strangeness of the question, so he said “Yes, that simple. Just know that God is your heavenly Father and He is always beside you. Then, ask for what you want in the name of Jesus and it shall be done for you because God loves you so much to deny a good request.” Sarah’s next question was, “Can you pray for me now so I can know how it is done?” Matthew took Sarah by both hands and she looked straight into his eyes. Matthew felt a bit awkward and then he said, “This is the time when we close our eyes before we say our desires.” They closed their eyes and Matthew led a simple prayer that afternoon.
Sade spent all afternoon thinking about what to do next. She paced from one corner of the living room to the other. There are times when she literarily paused and stood for minutes on a spot, lost deeply in thoughts. And when she got herself back, she paced again. She thought to herself, “Probably, our neighbor is the witch disturbing us.” She had forgotten to make lunch till it was time to pick Iyanu, Ronke and John from school. She rushed down to their school to get them. Sade was cooking when she heard voices in the living room - her husband and a man were discussing. She stepped outside the kitchen, walked down to the living room. George introduced the man to her as Mr Uche’s pastor and he introduced Sade, his wife to him. Sade was surprised that George had come in with a pastor. She asked, “How did you meet each other?” The pastor replied, “Last night, I was praying when the Holy Spirit instructed me to see Mr Uche at his office today. While I paid Mr Uche a visit during closing hour, George was passing by and Mr Uche decided to introduce him. We spoke together until he explained the incidents of this house to me. Immediately, I knew coming here was the reason the Holy Spirit told me to see Mr Uche.”
After a while of talking, dining and sharing the Word of God, they decided to pray. The pastor had barely spoken in tongues for few minutes when Word of knowledge started flowing in. The pastor starting revealing the exact secrets of the house and the money rituals that conspired between the rich man, his cult and the children he used. Sade and George were surprised and stared at each other, thinking that the pastor had heard the story of the house elsewhere. Then George quickly cut in the pastor’s speech, “This house is haunted by the ghosts of those people he had used.” The pastor replied, “No. The ghosts of the children had departed from the land of the living long ago. However, there are two demons disguising in the form of the children and disturbing anyone who attempts to live in the house.” George was stunned at the pastor’s words and wondered why the pastor could be so sure of what he said. As those thoughts ran through his head, the pastor added, “There is also another demon. It is a fierce one living in the cupboard. It was in charge of the ritual rites whenever the rich man performed the money rites weekly.” Everyone was astonished at the confidence with which he spoke as if he had witnessed the events firsthand.
As he led the family in some songs and some words to stir up faith in them, there appeared across the living room a set of twins, one male and the other female, at about the same height, walking towards them and raising their bloody hands. Everyone ran behind the pastor using him as a shield. The pastor stretched his hands towards them and commanded them, “Leave this house right now and be ye returned to hell, your home, in Jesus Name. Amen.” Immediately, the twins stopped and just before they disappeared, screamed out so loud that everyone had to cover their ears except for the pastor. They could not see any of the children again; they stood up from behind the pastor. Immediately, George noticed that John was no longer with them. As he turned around, he saw John being dragged by his legs into his room by the grizzly figure. George did not think twice before running to get John. As he entered the room with John, the door closed tight that no one could open it from the outside. George was stuck with John inside the room with the grizzly monster. John managed to break loose and ran close to his father. George held him so tight to his chest with his arms. The monster stood at the other end of the room by the window. George was paralyzed with fear as he stood watching the monster with partially close eyes, trembling lips and legs. They were struggling with the door from the outside and he knew it would be counterproductive if he attempted opening the door from the inside at the same time. “There is nothing else to do than to pray,” George thought to himself. He managed to muster out a few words, “Get away from this house in Jesus Name. Amen.” Nothing happened. George just kept shouting, “Get away... get away... in Jesus Name.” The monster just got closer. “Who am I kidding? How will God answer me when all my sins are so innumerable? When was the last time I prayed? When was the last time I even gave God the slightest respect or regard. I cannot deceive myself anymore,” George thought to himself. From the other end of the door, the pastor could barely hear George shouting “Get away”. Deep in his heart, he knew George must have been praying but nothing was happening. The pastor had an insight from 2Corinthians 5:21 in his spirit. The pastor wondered the correlation, nonetheless, he decided to follow the Holy Spirit’s leading as he shouted to George at the other side of the door, “George, you have become the righteousness of God through the redemption provided by Jesus Christ regardless of the things you have done. So, just keep saying it.” George, who was ridden with condemnation, was amazed at what the pastor had said. This time, the monster was just a few steps away from them, George’s futile “Get away...” shouts was not helping, so, he started talking to himself, “I am the righteousness of God through Christ Jesus” over and over again. Though he never understood what he said at first and the fear of the approaching monster was not helping either, but, he just continued repeating the statement. Then, he remembered when he gave his life to Christ on one sunny Sunday afternoon. The brother who entered his room to evangelize told him that his sins had been forgiven him after they took the salvation prayer. Gradually, he understood a bit of what he was saying. Bit by bit, he realized that his sins had been forgiven him when Jesus Christ died. His salvation was never about his deeds in the first place; how then can his forgiveness be based on his deeds anymore. Though he had a bare understanding of the words he was saying, but, it formed faith in his heart. This time the monster was already close and was about touching him when he said, “Get away from us in Jesus Name.” Immediately, a loud scratching voice was heard. In a flash thought, George remembered that the pastor had cast the other demons to hell, so he commanded, “Go to hell in Jesus Name. Amen.” Immediately, the scratching sound stopped and the door opened. The pastor rushed in speaking in tongues.
In a few minutes, every racing heart was settled and everybody’s fear had subsided. They finally had peace in the house since they moved in. The pastor said a few words to encourage them and keep them at rest in the firm promises and finished works of Christ Jesus. He said a few prayers committing them to Christ and he prepared to leave. He told them to be rest assured that the demons were gone for good, never to return again. Sade and George saw him off to his car, then, George said this just before he drove off, “We shall meet in church on Sunday.” They expressed their gratitude to the pastor and bid him goodbye. That night, never had they done so as a family, they had Bible study before they slept and Sarah offered to say the prayers. George really had nothing to say to his family since he had not read his Bible in years, so he taught on “The Righteousness of God by Faith” taking a cue from the Bible verse and the statement the pastor had told him earlier.
The next day, the old woman in the next house was waiting at the gate for him just like the other day. This time, George was more welcoming to her as the gates opened. She said she heard the loud scratching noise and she felt a sudden peace that filled her heart that night. George said it was God who delivered them in the name of Jesus and they never had to use any demon-repellant candles and fumes. She was surprised. George said he would talk to her later after returning from work. That day, neighbors from the street came visiting for the first time saying they heard the loud scratching noise and the sudden unexplainable peace last night. Sade replied that the demons in the house were cast out in the name of Jesus. George and Sade became members of Mr Uche’s church. In a few weeks and without realizing it, the street neighbors started having Bible study sessions at George’s house. They used the garden behind his house as the gathering venue every weekend. It was never intended to become a Bible study meeting but as each neighbor came around to hear the testimony for themselves, George explain the event and unintentionally, it turned to a message.
They lived in a haunted house as the result of a supposed mistake of not being led by the Spirit. But now, God had changed the course of events completely. A family who never had regard for God had become a family that held Bible study sessions for the street. Just because of them, a whole neighborhood was saved for Christ. What a testimony in the 28th house!

Episode 4 - Now, I believe

The following day, George called some electricians and carpenters to check on the lights and doors respectively. After hours of futile checking, they came back with the same response, “Boss, there is nothing wrong sir.” However, they demanded they receive payments for their time. Moreover, it was a Sunday so they requested for a higher pay than normal. George refuted at first but later obliged.
Sade was making lunch when George decided to enjoy his wife’s company in the kitchen. George had just finished some work on his laptop, so, he decided to relax with conversation with his wife. George came close as he gave his wife a peck on her cheek. Sade thought it was a good time to discuss the strange occurrences because the kids were busy with television. Sade said, “I think we should take these nightmares and things the children see seriously. I feel uneasy about them. I suggest we invite a pastor to pray for us or we attend church at least.” George was infuriated because that was not the type of conversation he had hoped to relax with. George replied, “Why are you reasoning this way? Do you also believe in things like that? There is nothing strange about nightmares. These nightmares are all figments of their imagination probably from the movies and television shows they had seen.” Then, Sade replied, “What about when they were not asleep and they saw these terrifying things?” George turned his head down as he said, “What do you expect? They are children who possibly cannot differentiate between dreams and real life.” Sarah was eavesdropping on their conversation from behind the kitchen door. Sade was tired of George’s adamant attitude and she made this remark, “Why exactly can’t you admit that these occurrences are not normal? Or, is it just self-denial just so you would not have to attend a church?” George was really annoyed at that statement as he left the kitchen saying, “I have important work to do.” As George walked out of the kitchen, he saw Sarah at the door. He chose to ignore Sarah despite the fact that he knew that she must have been hearing them all along. Sade suspected Sarah had been eavesdropping. So, as Sarah walked in to meet her mum in the kitchen, Sade quickly brought up another conversation so as not to scare Sarah.
A few days later, Sade saw the church pamphlet that Mrs Uche gave to her the other weekend during the dinner. Her eyes went straight to the church’s address on the leaflet and she thought to herself, “I have to attend their Bible study meeting this week.” She decided not to let her husband know about it because she knew he would be very displeased. On Tuesday that week, before her husband returned from work, she drove off to the church. She came late so she had to sit at the second to the last row. Midway into the service, Sade had an inward rest. It was a kind of feeling she had not felt in a long time. All of her mind was at peace. It was as if all her cares and worries had disappeared. She could not explain it but she knew the feeling was real beyond her doubts and emotions. The teacher taught on Matthew 11:28 saying “Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” She could not wait till the end of the service because she had to be home early before George arrived. Mrs Uche, as an usher, had seen Sade enter the church late. She was surprised to see Sade leave early. Mrs Uche thought to herself, “I will give her a call after service.”
As Sade drove home, she met Julie, the lady that helped her home when she could not find her way. It had been long they had last spoken. Sade gave Julie a lift home since Julie lived in the next street. Immediately Julie came onboard, she remembered she had something in mind to discuss with Sade so she quickly talked about it before she forgot again. Julie started by confirming if Sade and her family lived in the 28th house by asking, “I hope you do not live in the 14th house on the left in the 8th street, do you?” Sade replied, “Yes, we do. What is wrong with it?” Julie was shocked as she spoke in a shaking voice, “Everything is wrong with the house.” Sade tried to be calm as she asked Julie in a stuttering voice, “Would you please explain what you know to me?”
Julie explained by telling a summarized story of the history of the house, its first owner and those that lived there. She said, “In that street, there was once a rich man who built a house. Nobody knew where he came from; he sneaked in and out like a mouse. Some weeks later, the neighbors noticed that they were no longer hearing the sound of his car passing through the street. A few days after, three white vehicles parked beside his house, men dressed in occult clothes colored white and red alighted and entered his house. As fate would have it, all the neighbors saw when the men carried the dead rich man and two other dead children out of the house into the one of the white vehicles they had brought. As days went by, rumor has it that the rich man had done blood money rituals with those children. But rumors will always rumors until they are confirmed true. We heard the house was for sale and a young family came to buy it. They did not spend more than a month before they left. Rumor has it that the house is haunted by a monster and two ghosts. Another family bought the house and they spent three months before they left, probably due to the same reasons. Now, it is your family’s turn and neighbors are wondering how long you will stay before you leave too.”
Sade was so shocked at the story that she could not drive again. She parked beside the road as her mouth was wide open in astonishment. She tried to calm herself from within before she drove again. Julie knew Sade was not the same again. She felt sorry for Sade at her reaction to the story and at the same time, she felt relieved for telling the story as a warning for the family.
That evening, Sade could not tell George about the story she heard from Julie because she knew George would not believe her. All she wished for was that these strange occurrences stopped at once. After dinner and some television time, the children went to their rooms. George was still busy with some auditing while Sade was knitting a stylish cardigan for Ronke. And suddenly, John screamed again. As usual, he had seen a grizzly figure come out of the cupboard walking towards him. But this time, Ronke, Iyanu and Sarah were also in John’s room. Sarah was helping them with their assignments. By the time George and Sade got to John’s room, they met their kids shaking for fear as they gathered in one corner of the room. Sarah was the only one bold enough to point to the cupboard. And as usual, George attempted to open the cupboard to show his children that it was empty, the same grizzly figure appeared from the cupboard and George fell to the ground. Sade ran towards the kids to protect them as she opened wide her arms and stood in front of them. George crawled backwards as the grizzly headless figure approached him. Everyone was terrified to their bones. Fear filled the whole room and they shook. In a situation that seemed as if there was no glimpse of hope, Sade remembered the Bible study for that day. She managed to say a few words, “God, please help us in Jesus Name.” Suddenly, the grizzly figure ran back into the cupboard. George managed to catch his breath as he said “Now, I believe.”
That night, they all slept together in the same room because they were afraid. Sade called George into the kitchen as she told him the history of the house Julie told her. George could no longer deny the fact anymore that the occurrences were somewhat supernatural because he had seen it himself.

Episode 3 - What a Weird Night

It was the scheduled weekend for the dinner between the Adewale family and the Uche family. George drove about 45 minutes to get to James’ house. On arrival, James and his wife were already at the door to welcome George and his family. They smiled at one another as they alighted from the car and walked inside the house exchanging pleasantries. Mr James, his wife and his two sons were standing in the living room as they introduced each other. Sarah lifted up her eyes as she saw Matthew, her friend from school, beside Mr James. They both chuckled at each other as their eyes met. Both families were surprised at the chuckle so George asked, “Sarah, what is it?” Sarah replied, “I know Matthew. He is my new friend in school.” Both families were surprised at the coincidence and were happy that their kids had met in school. Mr James laughed as he said, “What a small world.” They completed introducing themselves after which Mrs Uche led them to the dining table. The food served was a simple dish of fried rice, salad and turkey. Mr James said the grace and they started eating. George commended Mrs Uche for a lovely meal. Mr James had quite a set of jokes which he shared and they all laughed. They enjoyed one another’s company.
After a while, the children were seeing a program on television as George, Sade, Mr James and his wife discussed. They spoke over a wide range of issues until they got to the discussion about what church George and his family attended. Mr James assumed that it had been quite a number of weeks since he arrived, hence, he would have found a branch of his former church to attend in this city. George replied by saying, “We do not attend a church yet.” “We hope to get a suitable one soon”, he added after a few seconds. Mrs Uche quickly said, “Then, we invite you to the church we attend. It is just a few minutes away from our house. I am sure you will love the place.” Sade replied, “We will love to check it out.” Mr James saw the expression on George’s face and he suspected George would not attempt to come at all. To confirm his doubts, he asked, “So, what church did you attend in the city where you were?” George never wanted the invitation to his church; neither did he want the conversation about churches to continue; at the same time, he did not want to lie. So he gave this answer with a straight face, “We did not attend any church at all. We did not even plan to attend any church consistently here too”. George was ready to be confronted by Mr James as people usually did, but, Mr James just kept mute. George was surprised because no one had ever been quiet about his attitude to church especially the “fanatic Christians” as George called them. They always tried to pester him to come with persuading words. This left George dumbfounded and Sade a little embarrassed. Mr James immediately slotted in another conversation on basketball. Mrs Uche stated, “Men and sports” as she took Sade by the hand so they could talk about something women had interest in elsewhere.
Sarah enjoyed the company of Matthew while their siblings were engrossed with the television program. They discussed about their favorite television shows, movies and music bands. Around 7:30pm, George decided to leave. George thanked Mr Uche’s family for their hospitality and for hosting such a nice dinner. They bid one another farewell as George and his family drove off. As they drove home, all Sarah could think of was not the delicious meals they had eaten, but, her conversations with Matthew. “I think I like him a lot”, she thought to herself. Likewise, Matthew was thinking about their conversations as he lay on his bed in his room. “I like her a lot. I think she has to come to our church and join the choir”, he said to himself. Immediately, he took out his phone and texted her on a mobile instant messenger typing, “What do you think about coming to worship at the same church, possibly joining the choir too?” Sarah replied, “I would love to. But that depends on my parents.” As they drove, Sade said, “That was a lovely visit and a good dinner.” George replied saying, “It was good. The Uches are a lovely family, I must say.” “Except for the church-issue, we all had a nice time together”, George added. Sade then said, “Concerning the church-issue, don’t you think we should attend a church?” George replied her by saying, “Well, let us think about it for some time. You know I do not like all these Christian frivolities and trivialities like paying tithes as if God owns your money or dancing and clapping like pagan worshippers. All those things just don’t suit me.” Sade countered him, “But, they are done to please the Lord and worship Him.” George did not reply but just shook his head. As they drove in that night, in their neighbor’s house, they noticed that a local lamp was left in the old woman’s balcony. George said, “Who still uses a local lamp these days with all the soot?”
John went to bed early because he was tired and sleepy. After a few minutes of sleep, he felt a touch on his right leg. John woke up only to see a grizzly figure with no particular face standing by the foot of his bed. He screamed and before his mum ran into the room, the grizzly figure went back into the cupboard. She embraced him tightly as she gently asked what was wrong. John replied, “There is a man in the cupboard.” As he spoke, George walked in. Sade explained what John said to George. George put on the room lights and opened the cupboard so they could all see as he said, “Can you see John? There is no one in the cupboard. It was just a bad dream. Go back to bed.” But John insisted there was someone there and he would not sleep in his room tonight. So, George decided to allow John sleep in the same bedroom with him and Sade.
Just few minutes after bed time, Ronke and Iyanu were still talking about the soap opera they had seen when the room suddenly felt strange. Then just beside the room’s window, they say a little girl of about age 5 standing with blood all over her face, hands and clothes. They were too shocked at first to scream. Later, as the girl started walking towards their bed with her bloody hands stretching towards them, they both screamed at the top of their voice, holding each other tightly in fear. George and Sade wondered what had happened again as they ran into the room. They struggled with the door trying to open it but it would not open. After several struggles, the door knob eventually broke. George gave the door a muscular kick and it eventually flanked open. They rushed in to see their daughters in absolute fear, too afraid to speak. Eventually, Iyanu managed to explain what they saw before the child vanished into thin air. Sade turned to George as she said, “This is getting serious o. I don’t think this is normal.” George replied, “They are just kids and they are having nightmares.” They also insisted to sleep in the same room with their parents because they were too afraid. As they walked to the bedroom, Sade made a remark, “Why is it that they are all having nightmares the same night. This is really strange.”
While all these were happening, Sarah was busy in the dream world. She saw herself walking in the woods and suddenly a headless monster started chasing her. She ran in between the woods as fast as her legs could take her, breathing heavily with each step in the race, moving left and right between the trees, hoping not to be caught. Then, she mistakenly struck her foot against the big root of a tree and down she feel. Hurting her left leg and straining her left ankle, she could not run again. She crawled ahead with fear as the grizzly monster approached her. She screamed for fear as she woke up from her dream. Just after Sade completed her remark, they heard Sarah scream.
They all rushed into the Sarah’s room together as they saw her shaking for fear. She could barely explain the nightmare in her stuttering voice as she held her left leg as though she was hurting truly like in the dream. Sade just kept saying, “What a weird night!” The lights in the house started going on and off rhythmically. The children were all very scared. George wondered why the lights were malfunctioning. Even the light switch could not put off the lights. They all slept in the same room that night. Sade managed to muster out a word of prayer as they all slept in the same big bed, “God help us.” As she concluded the statement, the lights came back to normal. George then said, “I will get in touch with the electrician next week to look into this strange light problem. Also, the carpenters must come and check on this doors that refuse to open easily sometimes.” “This is not an issue to be fixed by an electrician or a carpenter”, Sade said. Sade implied that these occurrences had an origin or cause that is somewhat supernatural. George already knew what Sade meant and replied, “They all just had nightmares and illusions; nothing more.” As they slept, Sade told George that they had to talk about these strange occurrences. She did not want to continue the conversation so as not to scare the kids.

Episode 2 - Making Friends

The following week, George was prepared for his first day of work at the zonal office. He was excited that he would own a bigger office this time with a name tag on the door and a higher salary. The most intriguing part of the promotion to him was that he felt satisfied and fulfilled because he could see himself climbing up the ladder in the company. George was arrayed in the new suit Sade bought for him as a promotion gift. Sade had given him some other things too like a new box of perfume and a screen-shield for his laptop due to his intense auditing work.
George arrived at the office early. Punctuality had always been his strong suit. Even George never could say how he developed the good habit of being punctual. All he knows is that it had always been a priority for him to be on time and to keep to time. The regional manager in the previous branch where he had worked always commended him on that. On arriving at the zonal branch, he met the zonal manager, Mr James Uche, on his way into the firm’s building. They exchanged greetings. George introduced himself as the new zonal accountant. Mr James already knew because he had been earlier notified of George’s posting and debriefed on his identity. They were alone in the whole building, apart from the guard who was also early. It is however difficult to tell whether the guard was early because punctuality was his habit or because it was his job description. Mr James showed George to his office and George was quite grateful. The first thing to get his attention was the absence of his name on the office door. Only the office position was on the door. After Mr James left, George started arranging things in his new office the way he had thought he would. Joy filled his heart as he took out of his bag item by item and placed them on his desk.
Mr James came by George’s office to invite George to the conference room for a general meeting. James noticed George’s family pictures of his wife and children, and another picture of George making a basketball shot, on the table. James smiled as he said to George, “Beautiful family, you’ve got there.” George replied, “They mean more than the world to me.” As those words reached James’ eardrums, he thought to himself, “First, he is punctual. He is also a family man and a basketball aficionado. I like him already.” That morning, James introduced George and the two other new members of the zonal branch to the rest of the workers in the conference room. And he presented them their name tags to be attached on their office doors. To George, getting the office-door name tags was like the final drop that makes the cup overflow; he couldn’t be happier. At closing, George headed for his car while he turned around as he heard his name. It was James calling him. They stood and talked about today’s work for a while, after which, James invited George for a family dinner at his home. James felt George would feel awkward about it since they had only known each other today. The two seconds it took for George to reply felt like hours to James as he felt embarrassed within. George smiled and said, “We would love to meet your family.” James felt a huge relief like taking ice water on a sweaty sunny day. They fixed a weekend for the family dinner. George drove home as he whistled a song and moved his head to the rhythm; glamorously reminiscing to himself about how his day was fine.
Earlier that same day, Sade went into town to get some house supplies at the supermarket. On her way back, she was lost. She stopped to ask for directions. She was glad to be directed aright. And just as she was almost in her district, she got the road numbers mixed up. She had to ask for directions again. This time, she was lucky to meet a woman who was heading to the street next to hers. Her name was Julie. They spoke all the way till she alighted at her junction. Julie had earlier suggested some good schools in the neighborhood that her children could attend. They exchanged phone numbers before she left. It was only after some minutes that it occurred to Julie that Sade had introduced herself as a new member of the 8th street. “It cannot be that same house! It definitely must be a different house”, Julie said to herself.
George told Sade of the family dinner and she was glad about it. They were both happy that they were making friends. They took Julie’s suggestions in making the decision on the school their children would attend. After days of deliberations and paying visits to the schools, they finally decided that Sarah was to attend a high school a little further away than her siblings. Iyanu, Ronke and John were to attend the school nearby.
Sarah spent the whole week talking about her new school to her friends on mobile chat applications. Although, she had not made any friend in her new school, she was contented because she was a very reserved person. One afternoon, during the break period, she was quietly taking a stroll to the buttery to get some snacks where she was greeted by a boy named Matthew. Matthew said, “Hello, you have a lovely voice.” Matthew had heard her singing quietly as she walked by. She was surprised and a little offended at the intrusive greeting. She managed to murmur out, “Thank you” as she walked on. Matthew followed her and this time her face was squeezed in anger. Matthew continued listing out songs sand by the same musician who composed the song she sang. Gradually, Sarah was getting amused as she lightened up her face. Matthew then asked, “What other songs do you like?” This time she felt a little free to reply him and they both did not know how time flew by as they chatted over snacks till the break was over. Matthew ended their conversation with a striking remark, “With your nice voice, your church choir must be very lucky to have you in their midst.” Sarah did not reply as they departed to their different classes because she considered it shameful to have such a Christian name but not belong to any church, let alone a choir. Nonetheless, she was happy she met someone that day.
That evening before she went to bed, she informed her friends on mobile chat apps about her new acquaintance. The following day was a Saturday. Sarah stood up from her bed at midnight to urinate. As she returned and passed by the mirror in her room, she thought she had seen a reflection other than herself. So, she took a few steps backwards to look into the mirror again. She saw the reflection of a child at about age 5, at some distance behind her. She had never seen the child before. She quickly turned around but did not see any child in her room. Thinking she was imagining things, she took another look at the mirror. This time, she saw the child again with blood all over his face and clothes, raising his hands and moving towards her. She was too scared to scream as she turned around to see no one in her room. She was so terrified to take another look at the mirror. She used her fingers to rub her sleepy eyes and took one more look at the mirror. This time, she only saw her reflection in the room. Her pacing heart settled as she made way to her bed to continue her sleep.
