PoliticsIllegal IGP Egbetokun Will Destroy Nigerian Police With Egregious Human Rights V by treesun(op): 12:23pm On Dec 15, 2024
The former presidential candidate, in a post on his social media handle, said that the IGP must be stopped before he completely destroys the Nigerian police.

Human rights activist and convener of #RevolutionNow Movement, Omoyele Sowore, has said that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, is illegally occupying the seat of IGP and that his mission is to destroy the Nigerian police.

Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 general elections, said that Egbetokun has deliberately been engaging in egregious violations of human rights since he was appointed and his tenure illegally extended by Tinubu.

The former presidential candidate, in a post on his social media handle, said that the IGP must be stopped before he completely destroys the Nigerian police.

Sowore wrote, “This illegal IG of @PoliceNG, Kayode Egbetokun, has engaged in egregious violations of human rights since @officialABAT appointed him and illegally extended his tenure.

“He was the person who ordered the murders of #EndBadGovernance protesters, he orchestrated the prosecution of minors for treason, he has assisted powerful elites in arresting and jailing their critics, including @delefarotimi whom he abducted from Lagos to Ekiti on behalf of Chief Afe Babalola, SAN.

“Speed Darlington, a musician is languishing in detention because he had a beef with @burnaboy, @IjeleSpeaks2 has spent months in prison now because IGP Egbetokun connived with Evang.

“Chukwuebuka Obi to silence him, and now this lady, Olamide, had to be flown to Abuja because she made Facebook posts about the IGP and @Princemoye1, who's had personal issues with her in Ogun State.

“IGP Kayode Egbetokun will destroy the Nigeria Police if we don’t act now.”

SaharaReporters had reported that the Nigeria Police Force on Saturday transferred the female activist, Abiodun Olamide Thomas, who was "abducted" from her home in Lagos State by lawless police personnel to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Abuja.

A human rights advocacy organisation, the Take-It-Back Movement (TIB) which made this known in a post on its social media handle said that Thomas was transported by illegally constituted Nigeria Police Force Courier Service to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport en-route Abuja.

The organisation had said that the activist was moved to Abuja to face an illegal trial “sponsored by President Bola Tinubu through FPRO, Olumuyiwa Adejobi and the IGP.”

TIB while reiterating its demand for immediate and unconditional release of Thomas wrote, “Human rights activist Olamide Thomas abducted by Nigerian police is now unlawfully flown to FCID Abuja!

PoliticsBandits Attack Katsina Community, Kill Five Residents, Abduct Others, Rustle Sev by treesun(op): 3:44pm On Dec 14, 2024
A witness and X user, @DanKatsina50, who made this known in a post on Saturday said that the bandits who attacked the town on Thursday night also rustled several cattle.

No fewer than five people were reportedly killed while three others were injured when bandits attacked Kuringafa town in Kafur Local Government Area of Katsina State.

A witness and X user, @DanKatsina50, who made this known in a post on Saturday said that the bandits who attacked the town on Thursday night also rustled several cattle.

He made the disclosure while reporting a fresh bandits attack on Yari Bori village in the same Kafur Local Government Area of the state on Friday night, barely 24 hours after the Thursday attack on Kuringafa town.

According to him, during the Friday night attack, the bandits kidnapped five girls but were pursued and engaged by local vigilante group members who rescued the five abducted girls.

“Yesterday night, bandits invaded Yari Bori village in Kafur LGA, Katsina State, abducting five girls.

“But they were later followed and engaged by CWC & vigilantes group members who freed all the abductees and forced the bandits to flee.

“This comes barely 24 hours after bandits attacked Kuringafa town in Kafur LGA, killing five people, injuring three others and rustling several cattle,” @DanKatsina50 wrote.

However, when SaharaReporters contacted the Katsina State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abubakar Sodiq Aliyu, for confirmation and update on the incidents, he said he would make findings and revert back to SaharaReporters.

But till the time of filing this report, the police spokesperson has not reverted back to SaharaReporters as he promised.

Politics2027: North Angry, ‘ll Look For Alternatives If Tinubu Doesn’t Get It Right – Ye by treesun(op): 8:46am On Dec 14, 2024
The President of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), Alhaji Shettima Yerima in this interview with Saturday Vanguard shares his insights on the perceived northern opposition to the tax reforms bill, highlighting the shortcomings in the government’s approach to the bill, the importance of proper consultation, and the need for transparency to gain public support.

He also addresses the broader dissatisfaction in the north, reflecting on the high expectations from the Tinubu-led government, emphasising the need to address insecurity and economic hardship to win back the trust of the northern populace.

I Can't give up because I have a mother and two brothers — Blind 23-Yr-Old Fabiyi...0:03 / 1:00

Yerima also criticises some state governors for their lack of creativity and initiative in generating revenue within their states, but rely heavily on federal allocations, preferring to share federal funds with their cronies rather than investing in their states’ development. He argues that decentralizing the federal structure would force states to become more productive and self-sufficient, ultimately benefiting the entire country. Excerpts:

Why the Northern Opposition to the Tax Reforms Bills? What are your fears?
The tax reform bills depend on how individuals or certain interests perceive them. But for us, the government could have done better. The idea was fine, drawing inferences from the situation in the country. Even if we are doing fine, no country ignores taxation.

This is one major area where they can generate funds for development. The presentation was one of the problems. The managers of the bills did not do well, which is why you see the reactions coming from the north as if the region is anti-tax reforms. No. They brought the issue and politicised it, making it seem anti-north. The government can still do well by consulting, which is the first thing they should have done. Go through the National Assembly, and the elected representatives will now go back to their various constituencies to meet with their people.

This way, the bill will enjoy the deserved legitimacy. I am happy that, at the end of the day, there is an understanding between the executive arm of government and the lawmakers. The lawmakers have also agreed to go back to their constituencies for further consultation. There are only a few grey areas I think they will amend and pass the bill. Certainly, the trouble it generated was unnecessary.

What are the grey areas in your view that you will consider for amendment?
For me, I am looking at the VAT area, and I also know there are bigger areas. But the opinion of the people supersedes my interest. So, it is important they let it get down to the people, and they will look at it thoroughly and let all stakeholders make inputs before it is passed at the National Assembly.

The North, having voted massively for President Tinubu and now opposing a major government decision like this, shows there is dissatisfaction among the people. Is there any regret supporting the Bola Tinubu Presidency?
In some quarters, there are certain regrets by the northern region. Don’t forget the eight years of Buhari’s administration brought nothing to the north. So, the expectation was so high that Tinubu knew where the problem lay, and someone like me who had worked with him and took him as a role model believed that he knew so much about the problems of this country and would approach the issues not as a military man but as a democrat and would be able to proffer solutions to them. But the people are disappointed because they are not getting what they expected of him.

In fairness to him, the situation was very bad. Everybody knew that whoever succeeded Buhari would go through a very rough path to succeed. We never expected that after eight years of rubbish, Tinubu would perform a miracle in two years. Yes, there are expected reforms, and without kids, we may not get the result immediately, but what is expected from the government is that whatever policy you are bringing, there must be a cushioning effect so that people would not unnecessarily suffer.

People have suffered enough. If he had done it that way, nobody would have accused Tinubu of ill-intention to balkanise the country or govern against any section of the country. He is very exposed and not a local champion. But sometimes, it is one thing to come up with a policy, but the implementation might not go well with the people.

The North is angry with the government, but the government still has another opportunity in less than two years to turn things around. So, some of us are not in a hurry to conclude that Tinubu might not be of any good to the north. We know the journey is rough. Let us give him some benefit of the doubt and encourage him.

If he doesn’t do anything that will positively impact the lives of the people, some of us can gang up against him and put our vote where we know we can get better treatment. We will sit down with all stakeholders, arrive at a conclusion, and look for alternatives. Right now, it is too early to conclude that Tinubu has failed.

What exactly are you looking at to pacify the frayed nerves of the region about some of his policies?
What I think he should do immediately is address the insecurity. I must first commend the efforts of the military. They are being stretched so much by this challenge of insecurity with inadequate manpower. I must commend the Service Chiefs and the Minister, Bello Metawalle, for boosting the morale of the men among other support.

The government should give them more support so that they can deliver on their mandate. On the economy, they need to look inward and find a way to put in place more palliatives that will get to the people and reduce the hardship on the common people. If Tinubu can win more on security and achieve peace in the troubled areas and go further to reduce the hardship on people, then he would have won the hearts of the northerners.

The north does not hate Tinubu or oppose him; it is just certain government policies making life more miserable for people, and it is expected that two years down the line, things will change for the better. But if this pain continues, you can be rest assured that it will not augur well. I believe in him, I still have faith in him, and I believe he can still turn things around. Again, one of the areas for the government to show sanity is by bringing all those who have stolen Nigeria dry to book. I am not comfortable with the government’s fight against corruption.

Some of those in the last administration who squandered our resources still gallivant around brazenly, and for the government to show sanity in the system, some of them need to be arrested and put in the cooler to pay for their sins. Some of them were nowhere a few years back, but today they own trillions of naira. This is one of the areas I am not comfortable with the government.

Amidst all of these, don’t you think the state governors need to be more creative in tackling some of these issues, particularly the economy and social security?
You have hit the nail on the head. Some of these highlighted issues are not the fault of the President. The question is, what are the governors doing with all the funds and allocations coming from the federal government to the states? Nobody is looking at that area. How have they alleviated poverty in their own way and in real economic terms? I can confidently tell you that some of these governors are sponsors of those bad elements in the National Assembly who oppose the Tax Reform bills. Some of them failed to harness some of the resources in their various states for the betterment of their people. They have nothing to bring to the table.

They only enjoy collecting the federal allocation to share with their cronies and make their girlfriends travel worldwide. They are so lazy and lack ideas. Some states that collect several billions of naira from the centre are not creative enough to even internally generate N1 billion from their states. That is why I am one of those advocating for the decentralization of the federal structure. The moment we decentralize the system, everybody will go back to their various states and harness their potential and resources and become productive. This current system will never see the light of day. If we continue under this arrangement, where people will sit and wait for federal allocation without being productive and in turn bring something to the centre, we will continue to have problems.

This is what the founding fathers envisioned. That was why the likes of Sardauna and Awolowo got it right. Why should we borrow a system from America if it is not beneficial? It is crazy. This central government must be decentralized. States must be made viable, and the governors must be productive. Some of them are lazy. Those governors are our problems.

Where is that money going? What did they use it for? We must begin to ask questions. This is why these Tax Reform bills must fly, but they must adjust the grey areas. Every state must begin to harness its resources and pay a percentage to the centre. The government, in their magnanimity, has made it clear that the money will be distributed to all tiers of government.

The state will take 50%, the local government will take 35%, and the centre will take 15%. What is wrong with that? If you don’t sow, you won’t reap. Why will the monkey continue to work and the bamboo continues to chop? I heard somebody talk about Lagos. That state has come a long way. We have seen how Lagos generates its resources. Today, without federal allocation, states like Lagos and Rivers can sustain themselves. What is wrong with our state governors doing the same to sustain themselves? Some of them, even when the federal government gives them allocation, still find it difficult to pay salaries. How can such a state survive and sustain itself?

Do you see the state governors giving a nod to this arrangement, drawing from their opposition to local government autonomy?
Yes, I agree, it will be difficult to fly, but we will continue to advocate for it until God gives us a rugged President and God-fearing lawmakers who will call their bluff and do the right thing. It will come in such a way that the governors will not be conscious of it until it is passed. Thank God for local government autonomy. We are getting there now, and we will get there.

Politics2027 Presidency: PDP Invites Jonathan As Party’s Fate Hangs On NEC by treesun(op): 5:27am On Dec 14, 2024
10 Goodluck Jonathans can’t defeat Tinubu, says APC

The Peoples Democratic Party has asked former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election on its platform.

In an exclusive interview with Saturday PUNCH, the PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, emphasised that it would be a regrettable development if Jonathan chose another party for his presidential bid.

He revealed that the PDP had been eagerly awaiting the former president’s return for a second term, stressing the party’s continued connection to Jonathan’s political rise.

THE LOUNGE: What Does Closure After Breakup Mean?0:00 / 0:00

Abdullahi highlighted the party’s historical role in shaping Nigeria’s leadership, citing several notable figures who had emerged from the party.

“We’ve said this about Jonathan and our governors. Even the FCT minister, is arguably the best performer in his role and he is a product of PDP. El-Rufai, Okonjo-Iweala, Dora Akunyili, Obi Ezekwesili, Akinwunmi Adesina, Amina Mohammed… these are the pride of this country, and they are all products of the PDP,” he added.

The PDP chieftain urged Jonathan to heed the call to finish what he started within the party, and warned against the “hypocrisy of the All Progressives Congress.”

“If Goodluck Jonathan is seriously considering running, we have been calling him to come back and complete his term. It will not be out of place, but if he runs with another political party, it will expose the hypocrisy within the APC,” he added.

Abdullahi also advised the former president to remain cautious of the recent praise from individuals and groups who previously criticised him.

“It’s crucial for him to remember how he was derided, criticised and reduced to nothing by these same people. Now that they are suddenly calling him the messiah, he must not be swayed by their sudden affection. That would be unfortunate,” Abdullahi stated.

The PUNCH had reported that the recent sighting of Jonathan’s presidential posters for the 2027 elections across major streets in Kano sparked speculations about his possible return to the political arena and intensified conversations about other prominent figures like Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar.

The posters, which were seen at strategic locations such as Gyadi-Gyadi/Zoo Road flyover, Kofar Nasarawa, and State Road, featured messages like, ‘Team New Nigeria 2027; The Goodluck Nigeria Needs—Dr Goodluck Jonathan.’

The recent campaign posters, our correspondents gathered, were masterminded by a political movement known as ‘Team New Nigeria’, which has been promoting its activities across Nigeria.

The emergence of the posters is similar to a development before the 2023 elections when supporters purchased nomination forms for Jonathan under the APC, but the former president distanced himself from the move.

Another permutation that raised discussions about Jonathan’s possible interest in the 2027 presidential election was the report that key political figures from northern Nigeria had begun efforts to draft Jonathan into the race.

It was reported that the move is based on the belief that Jonathan is eligible to serve another four-year term, having already served as president from 2011 to 2015.

Meanwhile, sources within the PDP have predicted that the future of the party would be determined at its upcoming National Executive Committee meeting, scheduled for February, 2025.

A member of the NEC, who spoke on condition of anonymity, emphasised that the agenda and the way discussions would be handled at the meeting would shape the party’s future.

Since assuming the role of acting National Chairman after Senator Iyorchia Ayu’s court-ordered removal, Umar Damagum has faced mounting criticism from party leaders.

Calls for his resignation have grown louder amid the ongoing turmoil within the party.

At the 98th NEC meeting held on April 18, party leaders approved the establishment of a reconciliation and disciplinary committee, alongside plans for ward and state congresses.

The North Central Caucus was also tasked with consulting to select a replacement for the acting national chairman.

Originally set for August 15, the 99th NEC meeting was first postponed to October 24, 2024, then rescheduled to November 28, 2024.

The PDP Governors Forum, led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, later directed the National Working Committee to ensure the NEC meeting held by February at the latest.

Additionally, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees and former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, echoed this call, urging the NWC to convene the NEC meeting in February.

According to a source familiar with the situation, the NEC meeting will be critical in addressing the party’s pressing concerns.

The source stated, “The NEC, like all previous meetings, is where crucial decisions are made. The proposed February NEC meeting will decide the party’s future, whether it happens or not.”

However, logistical challenges and differing agendas have made convening the meeting difficult.

The source warned that the longer the delay in holding the meeting, the more detrimental it would be for the PDP.

“The sooner the meeting is held, the more carefully the issues must be addressed, as every decision made at the NEC carries significant consequences,” the source explained.

But the immediate past Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Diran Odeyemi, told Saturday PUNCH that the delay in the NEC meeting was due to deeper reasons within the party.

He suggested that if the ultimate goal is to remove Damagum, he would do everything in his power to prevent the meeting where such a move could be made.

“Damagum, being a shrewd politician, is not ready to leave his post,” he stated.

Odeyemi argued that if the PDP’s intention was to seek peace, it must align with Damagum and his supporters and allow the situation to settle before pushing for further changes.

“If you cannot manage yourselves as a political party, how can you manage the country?” he questioned, cautioning that rushing into the NEC meeting could lead to more crises for the party.

As the February NEC meeting looms, the future direction of the PDP remains uncertain, with key decisions that could shape the party’s future and impact Nigeria’s political landscape listed as part of the agenda.

10 Goodluck Jonathans can’t defeat Tinubu – APC

Reacting to the invitation of the PDP to Jonathan to run on its platform, the APC said another defeat awaited the former president if he heeded the call.

In 2015, Jonathan ran on the platform of the PDP but was defeated by the APC flag bearer, Muhammadu Buhari, in the presidential election.

The former military dictator polled 15,424,921 votes to relegate the ex-president, who garnered 12,853,162 votes, to second place.

The election marked the first time an incumbent president had lost re-election in Nigeria.

In a telephone interview with our reporter, the National Director of Publicity of the APC, Bala Ibrahim, said, “There is just no way the APC will be jittery, if at all, there is such a plan to enrol former President Goodluck Jonathan into the race. The APC defeated him when he was in power. Defeating him when he’s out of power will be a walkover.

“It is something that cannot even give the party a sleepless night. So, whoever is making this permutation, if the intention is to scare the APC, I think he needs to go back to the drawing board and think again. We are not worried.

“However, I think it is too premature for us to be talking about 2027. After all, less than 40 per cent of the mandate given to the president under APC has not even been consumed. Let’s get to the river before we start thinking of crossing it. But if you bring 10 former President Jonathans, they cannot defeat the APC as of today.

“The APC defeated Goodluck Jonathan when the president was the leader of the party. The APC will defeat him again now that Tinubu is the president and the leader of the party. It is not Buhari’s cult followership that matters. It is the party arrangement. Buhari did not contest on independent candidature status.”

BusinessBank Workers Blame CBN As Cash Shortage Worsens by treesun(op): 11:40am On Dec 12, 2024
The Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance, and Financial Institutions has attributed the worsening cash shortage across the country to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s inability to meet the cash demands of commercial banks.

Speaking with The PUNCH, ASSBIFI President, Olusoji Oluwole, highlighted the dire impact of the scarcity, particularly as the festive season approaches, with increased demand for cash for shopping and business transactions.

“In terms of (the cash) scarcity, this is something that has not ended since the redesign of the naira,” Oluwole said.

Oluwole explained that banks have only two primary sources of cash – the CBN and retailers.

“Banks have only two sources of cash: the CBN and retailers. The CBN has not met banks’ demands, and retailers often sell cash for profit, making it harder for banks to access funds,” he explained.

He noted that the apex bank has failed to meet the cash demands of banks, while retailers profit by selling cash instead of depositing it back into the banking system.

“But, of course, it is beginning to become more pronounced now that we’re heading towards the Christmas celebrations, where a lot of people are going to need money to carry out their shopping and other businesses.

“Banks are not in a position to force retailers to bring the cash to banks,” he added, describing how this dynamic exacerbates the scarcity of cash in Automated Teller Machines and across bank counters.

Citing statistics, Oluwole stated that banks collectively require at least N20m daily to operate, with ATMs needing approximately N8m each and N4m over the counters.

He stressed the importance of CBN providing clear statistics on cash circulation to improve distribution efficiency.

“For us, we are not interested in trading games like we were doing last year but looking for solutions. The solution, one, is for CBN to have clear statistics, so that they understand where they are, how they are circulating, and where they are circulating to,” he said.

Oluwole also advocated for a shift towards less dependency on cash, emphasising that a cashless economy is cheaper, safer, and more efficient for the economy.

“An economy that operates in a cashless manner does better than a cash-dependent economy. It is a proven thing all over the world,” he stated.

In addition, the ASSBIFI President called for security agencies to crack down on illegal currency trading.

“You cannot be selling cash. You cannot sell your currency to people for a profit at discounted rates. It is not done anywhere,” Oluwole emphasised.

He urged authorities to investigate reports of point-of-sale operators buying cash from fuel stations and supermarkets.

Oluwole concluded by reiterating that no bank deliberately withholds cash from its customers.

No bank wants to starve its customers of cash. It does not make sense for any bank to hold on to cash, but you can only give what you have,” he said.

“As the cash crisis persists, stakeholders are urging the CBN to act swiftly to address these concerns and alleviate the strain on both banks and the public,” Oluwole stated.

Also, the National Coordinator of the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, Emmanuel Onwubiko, in a statement criticised the CBN and its Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, for their mishandling of monetary policy, holding them responsible for the resulting widespread hardship.

He further highlighted how cash scarcity has left millions, especially in rural areas, unable to conduct transactions, pushing small businesses, artisans, and daily wage earners deeper into poverty.

“Nationwide, long bank and ATM queues have become the norm, with depositors unable to access their funds despite sufficient balances,” he added.

Onwubiko argued that the crisis reflects not just poor monetary policy but also deeper systemic issues within Nigeria’s economy.

He urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene swiftly to stabilise the banking system and avert economic collapse.

The group also called on the National Assembly to summon the CBN Governor for accountability and oversight.

President Bola Tinubu, on Tuesday, sued for peace and unity in the country, saying even though people may have different political inclinations, Nigerians are one.

He spoke when he commissioned the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex, BATTIC, at the headquarters of the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS in Sauka, Abuja.

He said Nigerians are all occupants of one building who are only living in different rooms.

Recall that Tinubu arrived the Nigeria Immigration Service headquarters in Abuja to unveil BATTIC at about 12:08 pm.

He was received by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap.

BATTIC
BATTIC comprises the Command and Control Centre (regular migration), NIS Data Centre, ECOWAS Biometric Card Production Centre, Interior Data Centre and a 0.5KW solar power plant.

According to Nandap, BATTIC will ascertain the risk level of persons entering the country, detect irregular migration patterns and monitor unmanned borders in remote areas across the country.

She added that BATTIC is “setting the benchmark to use technology to secure our borders and ensure the security of the nation.”

Femi Gbajabiamila, President’s Chief of Staff; Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, heads of agencies, among others, were present at the ceremony.

The Lagos State Government has indefinitely suspended operations on its Red Line Mass Transit Train Service (LRMT), a project that is part of the ₦100 billion Greater Lagos Urban Transportation Project.

The Red Line, which commenced operations on October 15, 2024, after being commissioned by President Bola Tinubu in February, was expected to provide critical relief to Lagos commuters.

The suspension followed a series of mechanical failures last Monday, which disrupted the train service during its morning peak operations.

Initially, the operators of the Red Line, First Metro, had assured passengers via WhatsApp channel that the afternoon service would proceed as scheduled, announcing: “Please note that only the 5:20 pm and 6:50 pm train from Oyingbo and 6:40 pm train from Agbado will run today.”

However, by 9:19 pm on the same day, the operator confirmed its inability to resume service, apologising to passengers and announcing a full suspension.

“We sincerely apologise for the cancellation of service this evening, which was due to mechanical faults. Kindly note that the train will not be operating tomorrow and until further notice. We deeply regret this situation,” read the message.

The Red Line initially ran four daily shuttles, with two trains each during the morning and evening peaks along its 27-kilometre first phase.

Its development was funded under the guidance of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).

Norwegian Company Equinor Completes $2billion Asset Sale In Nigeria, Ends 30-Year Operations

Equinor (EQNR.OL) has finalised the sale of its assets in Nigeria and Azerbaijan for a total of up to $2 billion, marking the conclusion of its 30-year operations in both countries.

The Norwegian oil and gas company announced the completion of the divestments on Monday, a move first disclosed in 2023, Reuter reports.

The divestments, which were finalised in recent weeks, are expected to enhance Equinor’s cash flow in the fourth quarter. They align with the company's strategy to optimise its international portfolio.

"The exits enable investments to deepen further in countries where Equinor can add the most value and build a more focused and robust international portfolio," the company stated, though it did not provide further details.

Equinor aims to increase its international output by 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boed) by 2030, focusing on new fields in Brazil, the UK, and the US.

In Nigeria, Equinor sold a 20.21% stake in the Agbami oil field, operated by Chevron (CVX.N), to Chappal Energies for up to $1.2 billion, consisting of $710 million in cash and the rest in contingent payments.

The company did not specify how market prices or other factors might influence those contingent payments.

In Azerbaijan, the company sold its 7.27% stake in the Azeri Chirag Gunashli (ACG) field, an 8.71% stake in the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline, and a 50% stake in the Karabagh project to Azerbaijan’s SOCAR and India’s ONGC for $745 million.

Equinor’s net production in the first three quarters of 2024 was 24,600 boed in Azerbaijan and 17,700 boed in Nigeria.

PoliticsLocal Rice Price Rose By 137% – NBS by treesun(op): 8:23am On Dec 07, 2024
Local rice prices in Nigeria surged 137.32 per cent in October 2024 compared to the same period last year, making it one of the country’s 10 most expensive staple foods.

The sharp rise was noted in the National Bureau of Statistics’ Selected Food Prices report for October 2024, which provided an in-depth overview of food price trends across Nigeria.

According to the NBS report, the average price of local rice in October 2024 stood at N1,944.64, a significant increase from N819.42 in October 2023.

The surge in local rice prices highlights the ongoing inflationary pressures on food prices, which have become a key concern for Nigerian households struggling with the rising cost of living.

On a month-on-month basis, local rice prices also saw an increase of 1.56 per cent, up from N1,914.77 in September 2024, further highlighting the persistence of inflationary trends within the food sector.

Geographically, there were significant variations in the price of local rice across Nigeria. Kogi State recorded the highest price for local rice at N2,693.41, while Benue State recorded the lowest price at N1,267.25.

These price disparities across states reflect regional variations in supply, demand, and the distribution channels for staple foods.

It is also indicative of the challenges that local farmers and producers face in meeting demand amid rising production costs and logistical challenges.

The NBS report also indicated that food inflation in Nigeria remained high in October, standing at 39.16 per cent year-on-year from 31.52 per cent in October 2023.

The year-on-year rise in food inflation reflects broader economic challenges, including the effects of exchange rate volatility, fuel price hikes, and supply chain disruptions.

On a month-on-month basis, the food inflation rate rose by 2.94 per cent, up from 2.64 per cent recorded in September 2024.

The NBS’ inflation report for October 2024 read, “The Food inflation rate in October 2024 was 39.16 per cent on a year-on-year basis, 7.64 percentage points higher compared to the rate recorded in October 2023 (31.52 per cent).

“The rise in Food inflation on a year-on-year basis was caused by increases in prices of the following items: guinea corn, rice, maize grains, rice, etc (bread and cereals class), yam, water yam, coco yam, etc (potatoes, yam and other tubers class), palm oil, vegetable oil, etc (oil and fats class) and Milo, Lipton, Bourvita, etc. (coffee, tea and cocoa class).”

The incremental rise in food inflation is a concerning trend for Nigerians, as it suggests that food prices are likely to continue their upward trajectory, putting further pressure on household budgets.

In addition to local rice, agricultural rice, typically sold by local farmers, saw an even steeper price increase.

The price of agricultural rice in October 2024 experienced a year-on-year increase of 138.90 per cent to N2,023.68 from N847.08 in the corresponding period of last year.

Prices of agricultural rice varied significantly across different states, with Nasarawa reporting the highest price of N3,120.49, while Benue had the lowest at N1,354.87.

Agricultural rice, which is usually a more affordable option compared to processed local rice, has become significantly more expensive, further exacerbating the cost-of-living crisis for many Nigerians.

The PUNCH observed that the prices of Ofada rice and imported rice had also seen significant increases, contributing to the broader trend of rising food prices in Nigeria.

Ofada rice, a local variety grown predominantly in the southwestern region of Nigeria, experienced a sharp price rise.

In October, the average price of Ofada rice stood at N2,428.65, up from N811.83 in October 2023, representing a 199.16 per cent rise year-on-year, reflecting the growing demand for the staple and the rising cost of production.

The price of Ofada rice varies considerably across states. In Osun State, for example, the price of Ofada rice was reported at N3,400, while in Adamawa State, it was slightly lower at N1,425.

Also, imported rice, which is largely sourced from international markets, has seen considerable price hikes, influenced by the devaluation of the naira, import tariffs, and global price fluctuations in the rice market.

The average price of imported rice in October 2024 rose to N2,471.28 per 1kg bag, up from N1,016.12 per 1kg bag in October 2023, reflecting an increase of 143.21 per cent year-on-year.

Kogi State recorded the highest price for this rice at N3,187.35, while Niger had the lowest at N2,017.04.

The increase is largely attributed to the ongoing challenges in the foreign exchange market, which have made importing rice more expensive, as well as the higher global rice prices exacerbated by factors such as the Ukraine conflict and rising energy costs.

The rise in the price of imported rice is further compounded by Nigeria’s reliance on imports to meet domestic demand for rice.

While local production has grown in recent years, it has still not been enough to fully meet the country’s needs, thus leading to an increased dependence on imported rice.

The rising prices of local rice, Ofada rice, and imported rice have played a major role in driving up food inflation in Nigeria.

Last month, the Senator representing Jigawa North-West Senatorial Zone, Babangida Husaini, called on the Federal, State, and Local Governments to address the rising cost of basic food items, which continues to escalate nationwide despite the harvest season.

Not less than two explosive devices went off at separate locations in the Dansadau District of Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

According to PremiumTimes, the two explosions occurred on the road between Dansadau and Malamawa and another on Malele Road, all in the Dansadau district

A resident, Nuhu Babangida, was quoted as saying passengers in a Canter Truck going to the Dansadau weekly market on Friday escaped death after the truck, loaded with grains, ignited the bomb.

Babangida said the explosions on Malamawa and Malele roads went off simultaneously but recorded no casualties.

This is the third time an explosive device would be planted along Dansadau Road within a week.

12 people were feared dead Wednesday morning after an explosive blew off a bridge at Yar Tasha village.

The incident, Daily Trust gathered, occurred around 8am this morning after a commercial driver conveying passengers to Dansadau town ran on the device suspected to be planted by bandits.

Last Sunday a similar device suspected to be planted by bandits exploded with an 18-seater bus, killing the driver, who was the sole occupant.

Some retired military personnel grounded activities at the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja on Thursday over their unpaid entitlements.

The retirees accused the Federal Government of not paying them a 20% to 28% salary increment from January to November 2024.

Among their demands are their owed payments for palliatives from October 2023 to November 2024, the payment of an additional N32,000 to their pensions, the bulk payment of the Security Debarment Allowance, and a refund of deductions made from the pensions of medically boarded soldiers, among other demands.

They brought sleeping mats, chairs and canopies to the protest ground.

One of the leaders of the group, Col. Innocent Azubuike (retd.), had lamented the plight of military pensioners, stating that their unpaid entitlements had caused untold hardship.

He stated that despite assurances that their entitlements would be cleared in November, they were informed that the payments could not be made due to a lack of cash backing.

Azubuike said, “We were told approval has been secured for the payment of our entitlements. The only thing remaining is cash backing.

“We were told to exercise patience and assured that our long-unpaid entitlements would be settled in November. November is gone, and there is no indication of when this will happen because it’s a matter with the FMoF and not the Ministry of Defence.”

PoliticsYou Can Be Rich And Still Be A Thief' – Emir Sanusi Blasts Nigerian Politicians by treesun(op): 9:25am On Dec 05, 2024
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II has said that Nigerian politicians are responsible for the decline in societal values.
The monarch stated this on Tuesday at the 2024 Annual Conference of the Nkata Ndi Inyom Igbo (NNII) held in the nation’s capital.

He urged the country leaders to prioritise integrity over material wealth

According to the emir, a person’s true identity is not defined by their official title, wealth, or material possessions but by their character, integrity, and actions.

He said, “If you’re a senator or an emir or a governor or a rich man, it is what you are, not who you are. If you own a house, a big car or an aeroplane, it is not what you are. You are the man who owns that house. They are things outside of you.

“You can have two senators, one is an honest, good, kind and generous man and the other is a thief. They are both senators.

“Who you are is you are a good man or you’re a thief. You are honest or you’re dishonest, you’re kind or you’re cruel, or you’re trustworthy or you’re a traitor, you’re sincere or you’re a liar, that is who you are and that is the most important thing.

“Whether you own a big house or a plane or not, you can have a poor man who is a thief and you can be a rich man and you are still a thief.”

Sanusi added that public office is a privilege granted by God and a test of how leaders use their power to serve the people.

He stressed that the true legacy of any leader should be what they do for the society, not the material wealth they accumulate.

“People are given opportunities in public service to transform the lives of people for the better. God gave them that opportunity. And as we always say for those of us who are privileged, there is nothing that tells you that God loves you better than the other person he did not give that privilege. It is a test. God makes you a governor or an emir or a president or a senator and he does not make hundreds of thousands or millions…he’s testing you to see what would you do with that position to help those that he did not give. And it is a great opportunity to write your name in gold. But people don’t want to.

“You hold an office for 4 years or 8 years and all you can say is that I was a minister for so many years or I was a senator for this years or I was a President for so many years. So what if you were a president?

“What did you do with the 8 years? What do you want to be remembered for? Is it the houses that you will die and leave that your children will be fighting over? Is it the money that you hid in Swiss accounts that will never even come to your family? And sometimes the family gets it and we have seen the children become drug addicts, they become what we call ‘money miss road’. They spend it on parties and after three or four years, the money is gone,” he stated.

PoliticsNew Notes: Police Officers Stole N43.16m Cash Of N74.9m From Owners by treesun(op):
The Police at Force headquarters on Wednesday disclosed that forensic intelligence and investigation into an alleged smuggling scandal of New Bank Notes totalling N74,950,000 which was being moved on behalf of clients has revealed that some officers attempted to steal N43,160,000 of the money

Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi who made this clarification against the backdrop of social media allegations that IGP Kayode Egbetokun was shielding a cartel of currency smugglers, noted, “This group of officers conspired and stole part of the money, amounting to N43,160,000, and tasked one of them to move the cash out of the FCT for hiding pending when the heat blows over.

He said the allegations of currency smuggling were thoroughly investigated, the Police officers were found to have acted illegally by intercepting the cash and detaining an employee of the company which owned the money without authorization.

ACP Adejobi’s statement reads, “The Nigeria Police Force has noted with concern the recent allegations circulating in the media, suggesting that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, is shielding a cartel accused of smuggling suspicious new banknotes from the Central Bank of Nigeria.

“The NPF categorically refutes these claims, condemning them as baseless and orchestrated attempts to tarnish the IGP’s reputation and the integrity of the Force.

‘The incident in question, which occurred at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on August 26, 2023, has been thoroughly investigated.

‘”The officers involved – DSP Peter Ejike (a lawyer in charge of Zone 7 Legal Section), Inspector Ekende Edwin, Inspector Esther Okafor, and Sergeant Talabi Kayode, all attached to the Zone 7 Headquarters – were found culpable and sanctioned appropriately.

“These officers, led by Inspector Esther Okafor on the instruction of DSP Peter Ejike, unlawfully arrested Andrew Ejah, an employee of FATFAD Cargo Nigeria Limited, who was conveying the cash sum of ₦74,950,000 on behalf of clients.

“Acting without authorization, they detained Mr. Ejah at the Zone 7 Headquarters, Abuja, and deliberately misrepresented the recovered amount as ₦31,790,000.

‘The officers further demanded a percentage of the funds to suppress the case.

“Upon being contacted by the alleged owners of the money, the officers claimed that the sum they had recovered from the arrested suspect was N31,790,000, and requested a percentage of the money to jeopardise investigation and suppress the case.

“Outraged by their actions, the money owners petitioned the Force Headquarters, Abuja and the matter was directed to the IGP Monitoring Unit for Investigation.

“During the process, the cash sum of N31,790,000 was recovered from the officers, who claimed that it was the total money recovered from Andrew Ejah during his arrest.

“After intense investigations and a series of trial before duly constituted disciplinary panels, it was discovered that the officers took photographs of the suspect and the sacks of monies at the point of arrest but claimed the phone they used was damaged and subsequently lost, in an attempt to conceal their misconduct.

“However, forensic intelligence showed that this group of officers conspired and stole part of the money, amounting to N43,160,000, and tasked one of them to move the cash out of the FCT for hiding pending when the heat blows over.

“They thereafter resorted to several tricks and gimmicks in order to cover their tracks. One of which is the spread of this false narrative and misinformation to several online blogs and newspaper platforms.

“These officers have been suspended, being found culpable of serious misconduct, tampering with exhibits, abuse of office, corrupt practice, illegal duty, and acts unbecoming of a police officer.

“The movement of such an amount of money by the alleged cargo company could have been investigated and handled professionally by the police, but the officers were carried away by greed and therefore acted criminally and unprofessionally.

“It is pertinent to note that the circulating false narrative is a sponsored misinformation cultivated by mischief makers who seek to divert attention from the criminal acts of the police officers by attempting to join issues with the Inspector-General of Police.

“The affected officers will be prosecuted upon conclusion of due legal and administrative procedures.

“We urge the public and the media to refrain from spreading this false narrative aimed at tainting the reputation of the Inspector-General of Police.

“Such misinformation undermines public trust and detracts from the ongoing efforts of the current administration to reform the Police Force by eradicating unprofessional elements.”

PoliticsTax Reform Bills Won’t Impoverish North – Onanuga by treesun(op): 8:34am On Dec 03, 2024
The Presidency has dismissed claims that the proposed tax reform bills before the National Assembly would impoverish northern Nigeria or disproportionately benefit Lagos and Rivers states.

In a statement issued on Monday, presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga said the reforms aim to improve the quality of life for all Nigerians, particularly the disadvantaged, and streamline tax administration to foster a better business environment.

The statement followed concerns raised by Borno State governor, Babagana Zulum, who claimed that the proposed Value Added Tax (VAT) sharing model might favour Lagos and Rivers states.

Onanuga, however, described such reactions as unfounded and based on misinformation.

“The tax reform bills will not make Lagos or Rivers states more affluent than others, nor will they impoverish any region,” Onanuga stated, urging Nigerians to reject attempts to polarise the nation over the bills.

He clarified that the bills do not propose scrapping agencies like the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), or the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

These agencies will continue to operate and receive funding through budgetary allocations, he added.

The spokesperson added that President Bola Tinubu’s tax and fiscal policy reforms are intended to simplify tax collection, alleviate the burden on businesses, and support national development.

Meanwhile, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has called on Northern leaders to approach the ongoing tax reform bills before the National Assembly with pragmatism rather than sentiments.

Speaking during a Channels Television town hall on the reforms in Abuja on Monday, Dogara emphasised the need for leadership that prioritises the region’s future development over ethnic or religious biases.

“We Northern leaders should remove the cap of ethnicity and religious sentiments and put on the cap of leadership to face the reality, which the bills will bring,” Dogara stated.

He criticised senators who claimed insufficient consultation on the bills, questioning their own practices in lawmaking.

“How many people do they consult when making laws? Some state laws are written in the living rooms of governors,” he said, dismissing arguments that the bills’ popularity is more important than its impact.

Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Reforms, clarified that the bills aim to empower subnational governments to enhance revenue generation and achieve self-sufficiency.

PoliticsCBN To Retire 1,000, Offers ₦‎50 Billion Payoff by treesun(op): 8:21am On Dec 02, 2024
Barring any last-minute changes, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will soon retire about 1,000 of its employees before the end of the year, investigations by Daily Trust have shown.

Reliable sources at the apex bank’s headquarters revealed that the retirement would gulp over N50 billion in payoff to the affected workers.

In what it described as a strategic realignment of its workforce, the CBN’s Board of Governors, led by Olayemi Cardoso, had expressed commitment to reducing the workforce.

In the last 10 months, the CBN had disengaged many of its staffers, including 17 directors, who served under the immediate past governor, Godwin Emefiele.

A circular released three weeks ago by the CBN, sighted yesterday by our reporter, said the application for Early Exit Package (EPP) was open to all cadres of staff and will close by Saturday, December 7.

Exempted are those yet to be confirmed or who have served less than one year “as of the date of publication with the effective date of exit set at 31 December, 2024.”

Officials told Daily Trust that the apex bank was targeting retirement of over 1,000 staff members.

The officials, who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent that at least 860 staff from the various departments have already applied for the EPP.

The management described the EEP as a voluntary programme offering eligible employees an incentive to exit the CBN early, “while providing employees seeking other career options a great opportunity for early exit.”

It cautioned that the staffers could not change their minds after applying, saying that all completed and submitted applications are final.

The EEP stated that financial incentives for senior supervisors to deputy managers shall be for the remaining period in service, up to a maximum of 60 months of current grade’s gross annual emoluments.

It also noted that financial incentives for managers shall be for the remaining period in service, up to a maximum of 36 months of current grade’s gross annual emoluments.

“Financial incentives for all other cadres of staff shall be for the remaining period in service, up to a maximum of 18 months of current grade gross annual emoluments,” it added.

The EEP also provides for non-financial incentives, including “financial planning and entrepreneurial capacity building programme, purchase of laptops in line with the Bank’s current policy and extended medical care for an additional three months for self and dependents after the expiration of the three-month current provision of access to medical windows care by exited employees.”

‘They’re offering me N97m for 4-yr service’

A staff member, who spoke to our reporter, said: “The way they dated the offer, you’ll know that the target is actually from senior supervisors to deputy managers. If you look at it, they’re mostly those that came in within the 9 years of Governor Emefiele.

“For instance, I’ve worked for 4 years in the bank; the package they’re giving me is between N92 million to N97 million.

“Some others have worked up to a manager level and are only entitled to N64.5 million. So, the more time you have to go, the more money they pay you because you know, for them, you don’t have gratuity”, the staff said.

Another staff told Daily Trust yesterday that during a webinar held on Friday, the Human Resource Department of the bank expressed the apex bank’s decision to get the number it was targeting for the EEP.

“There is serious tension, serious apprehension. You can imagine the atmosphere. It is terrible.

“As of Friday, there were 860 people so far that have indicated interest in the EEP,” the staff said.

17 sacked directors yet to be replaced

The 17 directors sacked 10 months ago and those who retired then are yet to be replaced.

Information on the CBN’s website yesterday showed that each of the 13 departments is headed by a coordinator.

A circular for replacement specified that deputy directors who have two years or less to retire are not eligible for consideration, and that each applicant must apply for only one of the positions listed as multiple applications may lead to disqualification.

Daily Trust’s investigations revealed that following the outcry that greeted the perceived bias against serving deputy directors, some of them were allegedly invited to apply for the vacant positions.

A senior staff stated that: “As it is, most of those who should qualify were affected alongside the sacked directors.”

Some of the sacked directors had, four weeks ago, approached an Abuja division of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria for an interlocutory injunction to restrain the CBN from replacing them, saying their employments were “unlawfully terminated without a valid reason.”

CBN keeps silent

When contacted by Daily Trust for comments on the decision to send about 1,000 staff on early retirement, the CBN’s Director of Corporate Communication, Hakama Sidi Ali, neither answered calls nor replied to a text message sent to her.

What CBN’s policies and procedures manual says

Section 16.0 of the CBN’s Human Resources Policies and Procedures Manual (HRPPM) titled ‘Cessation of Employment’, specifies that in every case of separation from the employment of the bank, it is the objective of CBN to make separations as amicable as possible for both the employee and the bank.

Section 16.3.5 notes that an employee’s Normal Retirement Date in CBN should coincide with the date the employee is 60 years old or has put in 35 years of service.

“Early retirement can be considered when the employee has served for at least 10 years, and is only granted at the discretion of management,” it said.

According to the manual, the CBN feels that the retirement of an employee should be an occasion for celebration and for recognition of the individual’s contributions to the bank.

However, Section 16.4, which specifies the condition for redundancy, stipulates that redundancy means involuntary and permanent loss of employment as a result of excess human resource.

It said the redundancy processes are designed to provide a framework to manage change, where that change involves termination of employment.

“Adversely affected employees are given the opportunity for early separation from the bank.

“Consultation with the Joint Consultative Council is essential, and a fair process is mandatory. Employees who are adversely affected may appeal decisions made by the head, human resources,”
it said.

The manual said the grounds for redundancy require that employment may be terminated for economic, technological, structural or similar reasons.
