Crime › Economic Hardship: FG Slashes Stranded Foreign Scholars’ Allowances by treesun(op): 8:52am On Jul 24, 2024 |
The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Education, has announced a slash in allowances of foreign scholars who are currently stranded in Russia, Morocco, and Algeria, among others by 12.7%.
The ministry attributed the development to economic crises.
The PUNCH had earlier reported that Nigerian students studying in Russia, Morocco, Algeria, China, Hungary, and other countries, on the Federal Government’s scholarship lamented their unpaid stipends for eight months running.
The students are studying under the Federal Government’s Bilateral Educational Agreement Scholarship.
The BEA scholarship is for the purpose of education exchange between Nigeria and the partnering countries.
The Federal Scholarship Board is supervising the scholarship under the Federal Ministry of Education.
The government’s decision to slash the scholars’ allowances was contained in a memo signed by the Director of the Federal Scholarship Board, Ndajiwo H.A., on behalf of the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman.
“After due consultations, the Federal Scholarship Board has come up with adjustments in line with budgetary provisions in the payment of BEA scholar’s supplementation allowances for the 2024 academic year,” the memo, dated July 23, 2024, and addressed to the scholars’ association, read.
According to the memo, the monthly allowances were slashed from $500 to $220; the graduation allowance from $2500 to $2000; and the PG research allowance was slashed from $1,000 to $500, among others.
The total for the payments initially paid was $5,650 per student but will now be $4,370
“The Scholars’ Association is hereby notified that due to the prevailing economic situation, the payment mandate for the BEA scholars’ allowances will be as per the new adjustment.
“The balances for the years 2023 and 2024 owed to scholars will be paid as soon as the funds are made available,” the ministry said.
Recently, the President of the Union of Nigerian Students under the Federal Government-controlled Bilateral Educational Agreement Scholarship, Ayuba Anas, said the scholars had not been paid for close to eight months.
Anas said, “For the past six to eight months, scholars enrolled in various institutions abroad have endured financial strain due to the delay in receiving their stipends.
“In addition, from the last payments we received (March-August), there was a shortfall of practically two and a half months’ payment. Moreover, some students in China have not received any stipends since they arrived in April and May 2023.“ https://punchng.com/breaking-economic-hardship-fg-slashes-stranded-foreign-scholars-allowances/

Politics › FG Generated 300,000 Businesses, Created One Million Jobs In One Year — VP by treesun(op): 9:09pm On Jul 23, 2024 |
The Federal Government has generated over 300,000 businesses through various Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) interventions, aiming to create over one million job opportunities, primarily for youth and women, within a year.
This was disclosed by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a one-day working visit to Jigawa State.
Vice President Shettima explained, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has initiated multiple interventions for SMEs, which have generated over 300,000 businesses and will provide over one million jobs within a year.” He emphasised that the Renewal Hope Agenda of President Tinubu is designed to tackle poverty and create job opportunities by encouraging and supporting medium and small-scale businesses, which constitute over 65 per cent of investment and employ 83 per cent of labour in Nigeria.
He further stated that the current administration is working tirelessly to formulate and implement policies and programmes that will improve the social and economic lives of Nigerians.
Addressing the youth, Shettima urged them to ignore calls for the proposed nationwide protest, describing those calling for it as selfish and unpatriotic.
He said, “The protest will not yield any positive development; instead, it will lead to violence and destruction of public properties.”
Vice President Shettima commended Governor Malam Umar Namadi for his efforts in creating jobs and sustainable livelihoods, as well as for initiating and executing projects that uplift the lives of Jigawa citizens.
Governor Namadi, in his remarks, praised the Federal Government for its laudable initiatives, policies, and programmes, which are gradually changing the social and economic directions of the country.
He highlighted the Expanded National MSME Clinics, designed for the development of micro, small, & medium-scale enterprises, as commendable efforts aimed at creating the necessary environment for inclusive and sustainable growth of the Nigerian economy, ultimately lifting millions of Nigerians out of poverty.
“We are delighted to align our 12-Point Agenda for Greater Jigawa with the Federal Government’s Renewal Hope initiative,” emphasised Governor Malam Umar Namadi.
“These projects will not only support the attainment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for inclusive and sustainable socioeconomic growth and development but also further our state’s development objectives of improved socioeconomic well-being for all, as encapsulated in our 12-Point Agenda.”
He noted that all the programmes commissioned by the Vice President have significant potential to contribute to the nation’s goals of economic diversification, food security, employment generation, and job creation.
During his visit, Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima launched several key initiatives, including the training of 1,000 youth in artificial intelligence (AI), the development of 20,000 hectares of sprinkler-based solar-powered irrigation, and the establishment of a small and medium-scale enterprise clinic in Jigawa State to boost job creation and poverty eradication.
Additionally, the Vice President commissioned a 100 KVA solar-energy power supply system to provide stable power to small-scale enterprises at Dutse Market, distributed motorcycles to 1,450 agricultural extension workers, and handed out agricultural inputs to rural farmers.
The Vice President was accompanied by the governors of Kebbi and Kaduna States and the deputy governors of Katsina and Sokoto States, among others. https://tribuneonlineng.com/fg-generated-300000-businesses-created-one-million-jobs-in-one-year-vp-shettima/

Politics › Tinubu Palliative: Anxiety As 740 Trucks Of Rice Fail To Arrive Most States by treesun(op): 11:44am On Jul 21, 2024 |
Only a few states appear to have received the 20 trucks of rice palliative earmarked for each of the 36 states by the Federal Government and the issue is causing anxiety, Sunday Vanguard understands.
A survey at the weekend shows no northern state apart from Kano had received the consignment of rice while in the South-West, only Oyo claimed that the trucks had arrived.
In the South-South, Akwa–Ibom, Rivers, and Bayelsa States’ officials confirmed receiving the latest palliative while others said they had not arrived.
Delta State government said the rice had not been received as of Friday noon while Edo and Cross River States’ officials did not respond to inquiries.
The Federal Government had, last Monday, said it had allocated 740 trucks of rice to the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.
Each state including the FCT, under the arrangement, is expected to get 20 trucks containing 1,200 bags of 25kg each and the rice is to be distributed to the most vulnerable in the society.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents at the end of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The Minister, who was flanked by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said that the President directed the Minister of Agriculture to ensure that food is made available to Nigerians.
He explained that the distribution of trucks of rice was also to ensure that the hardship in the country is ameliorated, adding that it’s expected that the state governors will distribute the trucks of rice to the most vulnerable.
Delta: No rice yet – Ahon, CPS Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Delta State, Sir Festus Ahon, confirmed to Sunday Vanguard that the state had not received its share of the palliative.
We received rice –Bayelsa Commissioner Koku-Obiyai, Bayelsa State Information Commissioner, Mrs. Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, who confirmed receipt of the rice in Yenagoa, the state capital, said, ”Yes, the state has received the palliative.
“I just confirmed from the Chairman of SEMA that the state has received 20 truckloads of 25 kg bags of rice.
“The governor will be informed. In Bayelsa State, we do not distribute palliative along party lines. Everybody is suffering, when I was in the House of Assembly, Governor Diri insisted that everybody should benefit from such distributions.”
Chair of the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Hon Walama Igrubia, also confirmed the delivery of the palliative when contacted.
‘A-Ibom received 24,000 bags’ In Akwa Ibom State, the Commissioner for Information, Ini Ememobong, acknowledged receipt of 24,000 bags of 25 kg rice from the Federal Government to cushion the hardship of the current food crisis in the country.
He explained that the state government added another 24,000 bags of 25 kg from the Federal Government to increase the quantity to 48,000 bags to ensure that more families benefit from the intervention.
His words: “Through this food intervention, the government will share 20 bags of rice each to 2,272 villages in the state.
“This is in addition to the over 100,000 families drawn from the social register, who have already received and others who will be receiving free food items from the state government through the Bulk Purchase Agency.
“This food intervention by the government is aimed at cushioning the effect of the hardship currently faced by our citizens, and reducing extreme hunger and poverty as stipulated by Sustainable Development Goal 1.
“However, the long-term and sustainable solution remains the back-to-farm initiative of the state government to boost local food production, which is why the governor declared the first and third Fridays of the month as work-free farming days by the governor.
“Additionally, the Ministry of Agriculture has undertaken several strategic interventions, including distributing cassava cuttings, maize grains, pepper seedlings, and coconut seedlings to 135 public primary, and secondary schools, and shared 150,000 cocoa seedlings with cocoa farmers.
“It had also distributed 40,000 oil palm seedlings to oil palm farmers, 80,000 pepper seedlings to vegetable farmers, four piglets, three weaners (goats) to 1,200 livestock farmers, 50-day old chicks with six bags of feed distributed to 700 poultry farmers, and bags of feeds distributed to 200 aquaculture farmers
“These are in addition to the provision of livelihood grants of N150,000 to 1,560 beneficiaries, agricultural inputs (day-old chicks, juveniles, feed, etc), and services to 900 farmers undertaken under the AKCARES Scheme.
“Distribution of the federal and state governments’ food intervention will be done at the local government council headquarters where respective council chairmen will ensure that 20 bags each are safely transported to all the gazetted villages. Dates for the distribution will be announced soon.”
Fubara sets up LOC for distribution in Rivers In Rivers State, the latest palliative from the Federal Government arrived Lagos on Wednesday.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara revealed that a Local Organizing Committee (LOC) headed by the Caretaker Chairmen of every local government has been set up to distribute the food items to the most vulnerable people in every nook and cranny of the state.
The governor spoke through the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Wenike Danagogo, during the joint flag-off of the Federal Government Grain Distribution with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Port-Harcourt.
The state Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joe Johnson, who confirmed that the state received the palliative to Sunday Vanguard on Wednesday, said, “As a government, we are doing our best to cushion the effect of the hard times on our people.
“Last Easter, for instance, we distributed rice to the most vulnerable people. There are other measures put in place by the government to mitigate the hardship.”
Johnson assured that nobody would compromise the distribution process, and political interest would not determine it.

In a telephone chat, Special Adviser to Ogun State Governor on Media and Strategy, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, said the state government was awaiting its consignment.

He assured that the state government will ensure that the commodity gets to the targeted beneficiaries.
Ekiti waits too Speaking with Sunday Vanguard on Friday morning, Ekiti State Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mr Taiwo Olatunbosun, said, “I am yet to get an appropriate briefing from the coordinating body on when the vehicle will be in.
“It is when we have that information that we would be able to make appropriate comment “I am not sure we already have delivery of the grains but I’m aware that it was announced after the Federal Executive Council meeting that states would be given certain quantities and truckloads of rice, but as soon as we have details of the consignments, I will let you know”.

Politics › Tinubu’s Source Of Wealth Unknown; His Govt Looting Billions From Oil Theft- FT by treesun(op): 9:11am On Jul 20, 2024 |
The Financial Times (FT) has raised significant concerns about President Bola Tinubu’s unexplained source of wealth, accusing his administration of looting billions through oil theft while millions of Nigerians suffer from hunger and poverty. In an editorial published on Wednesday, the FT criticises Mr Tinubu’s disjointed policies, which have exacerbated the plight of tens of millions of Nigerians, pushing them further into poverty. “Corruption must be confronted. It does not help that Tinubu’s own substantial wealth remains obscure, nor that his Minister for Poverty Alleviation was suspended over allegations of funds diversion, which she denies,” the FT argued. It added, “It also does not assist that the state is implicated in the large-scale theft of oil, depriving the nation’s coffers of billions of dollars. Tinubu must utilise all his political acumen to stem this theft.” According to FT, instead of handing out bags of rice to Nigerians, what is needed is direct cash payments to people’s phones, the technology for which exists, and in the longer term, a proper safety net, which the state lacks the capacity or probity to administer. In 2022, Peoples Gazette published a series of damning reports on how Mr Tinubu, who was Lagos governor between 1999-2008, corruptly enriched himself through questionable Lagos tax administration via Alpha Beta. The newspaper also uncovered how Mr Tinubu’s Alpha Beta siphoned billions to shell companies. FT’s critique follows the anniversary of Mr Tinubu’s first year in office on 29 May. Previously, The New York Times had similarly reported on how Mr Tinubu’s policies have deepened poverty in Nigeria. Last week, Senator Ali Ndume, a member of Mr Tinubu’s party, condemned the administration for its insensitivity to the suffering of Nigerians, describing it as being run by “kleptocrats.” https://gazettengr.com/tinubus-source-of-wealth-unknown-his-govt-looting-billions-from-oil-theft-as-hunger-plagues-nigerians-financial-times/ |

During the endsars protest, how many houses, police stations, government busses and other social amenities did your people destroy in the southeast, perhaps how much of those has been provided by your state government ?.obviously it was a calculated attempt to draw back the Southwest to the deplorable state of economic and political penury that you people have placed yourselves. Go and protest in your states and destroy political infrastructure there. Politics › Hardship: ‘This Is Unbearable, People Are In A Dire Situation’ – Emir Sanusi by treesun(op): 10:46pm On Jul 18, 2024 |
The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has expressed deep concern over Nigerians’ severe economic hardships.
His comments came during a ceremony for the distribution of free fertiliser to 52,800 smallholder farmers across Kano State’s 44 local government areas on Thursday.
Addressing the gathering at the Government House, alongside the newly appointed second-class Emirs of Gaya and Karaye, Sanusi highlighted the dire situation many Nigerians find themselves in.
“People are in a dire situation. I’m aware that people now resort to buying half pepper because of the high cost of food items. This is unbearable. But I think with efforts like this, people can get some relief,” he stated.
The initiative, which aims to alleviate economic hardship and promote food security, will see each farmer, including women and persons living with disabilities, receive 25kg of fertiliser.
The Emir praised the Kano State Government for the initiative but urged further action to mitigate the ongoing economic challenges.
On his part, Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, said, “We are determined to support our farmers and ensure that food is available and affordable for all.”
The Emirs of Gaya and Karaye also voiced their support for the programme. Emir of Gaya, Ali Ibrahim, said, “This distribution of fertiliser will significantly contribute to food security in our state.” Similarly, the Emir of Karaye, Mahammad Mahraz, expressed optimism that the initiative would benefit the farming community.
Representatives of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) were also present, expressing their gratitude for the government’s gesture. “This initiative will help bring down the cost of food items in the state and provide much-needed support to our farmers,” remarked AFAN official Ibrahim Inuwa. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.channelstv.com/2024/07/18/emir-sanusi-laments-economic-hardship-in-nigeria/amp/
