Patriarchy has been the ruling system for as long as life has existed, and this means social power is given to the men of the community. Unfortunately for men and perpetuators of patriarchy, women are not having any more of this such as the group of women in Kenya who in the bid to reject patriarchy, formed Umoja, a women's only village. Umoja was founded in 1990 by Rebecca Lolosoli after being assaulted by her husband and other the men in her village, Samburu. She was beaten and battered for speaking out and demanding justice when British soldiers raped other women in the village. Knowing that the world would be a better place without men, Lolosoli escaped and founded a village with a group of 15 other women. The name "Umoja" is Swahili for "united", and the principal aim of the village is to provide a safe haven for women who are trying to escape sexual violence or female genital mutilation. Their primary source of income is the sale of jewellery, which is a business the women have managed to maintain despite frequent ambushes from men in nearby villages. Some of the men attack them for personal reasons, while others just don't want women to have nice things without them. The women of Umoja have since inspired several other villages, Nachami and Supalake, however things aren't quite as cutthroat in these places. In Nachami there are men allowed in, but only if they reject traditional patriarchy, while in Supalake, men and women co exist, however the women have overriding power in the running the village. You go girls!!! To everyone who is of the opinion that feminism is 'not African' and it's something we've learnt from the western world: you should stop giving white people so much credit because these rural women are the definition of feminism! Yesterday, Usain Bolt kept fans on their toes when he posted a video on Twitter saying he had signed to a football club. Although he promised to reveal the mystery club by 9 AM today, many people started speculating it must be Mamelodi Soundowns, the South African club he trained with a few weeks ago. You can’t blame them, considering the club made a Twitter post about Bolt being in football. However, like he promised, Bolt revealed the football club this morning, and it’s not Mamelodi Sundowns. It’s not even a football club per se. It’s Soccer Aid World IX, a group of celebrities from around the world brought together by UNICEF to play a football tournament to support humanitarian causes. We don’t blame Bolt for the suspense. The announcement is big on its own for two reasons: He’ll be the captain of the team and the match will happen at Old Trafford, the home ground of Bolt’s beloved Manchester United! Bolt has expressed his intention to play for Man U many times. Although he hasn’t signed a contract with the club, he’ll now get the chance to test the turf of The Red Devils. And who knows? His dream of being a Man U player might just take off from there. Bolt’s team will be playing against the ‘England’ team, which has English singer and actor, Robbie Williams as captain. Proceeds from the Soccer Aid Game will go to helping children in danger around the world. http://www.trended.com.ng/2018/02/usain-bolt-will-play-in-unicefs-soccer.html

The 50k note was one of the 4 denominations (50k, ₦1, ₦5 and ₦10) to be introduced on January 1, 1973. Before the introduction of the Nigerian Naira-Kobo currency, the country had used the Nigerian pounds and shillings which were issued on the 1st of July 1959, and before 1959, Nigerians made use of different forms of money including cowries and manilas in a traditional form of exchange known as barter. The image on the front of the 50k note is that of the Central Bank Building in Lagos, and at the back is that of log cutters. The watermark is a heraldic eagle. The notes were last issued in 1989 and were coined in 1991. If you used the 50 kobo notes comment below. |

Google is going to announce Android P, the successor of Android Oreo, later this year. But Bloomberg’s latest report unveils few new features of the upcoming Android OS ahead of the Google I/O. Google is working on an overhaul of its Android mobile software for a new generation of smartphones mimicking Apple’s controversial new “notch” at the top of the iPhone X, according to people familiar with the situation.” Google will also be integrating Google Assistant, improved battery life, and support for devices with multiple screens and foldable displays. “While Android dominates the middle and low-end of the global smartphone market, Apple controls much of the high-end with users who spend more on apps and other services. Embracing the notch may help change that. The design will mean more new Android phones with cutouts at the top of their screens to fit cameras and other sensors. That will likely support new features, helping Android device makers keep up with similar Apple technology.” However, the device manufacturers such as Samsung and others can make changes to the OS to remove the notch design as it is subjected to software but not hardware. So, the smartphone makers can opt out of the notch design by tweaking the OS. But few OEMs already planned to release their smartphones with a notch display design. One such device is already on the market by Essential Phone and Huawei is also rumored to include the design in its P20 series of flagship phones this year and there are many other excluding the copy phones which entirely gimmicks the iPhone X look, design, and few features.
