Education / The Freshers Guide To Campus Life by TrendedNG(f): 9:10pm On Nov 24, 2017
Congratulations. There are about 1.4 million young Nigerians who are waiting to hear that word; waiting to receive an admission letter that begins with it. Sadly, only about 700,000 of these students will receive the good news. But getting admission into the tertiary institution is just a tip of the iceberg.

The sad fate of students, who have been unable to complete their tertiary education for reasons ranging from peer pressure, cultism, drugs and alcohol abuse to pure laziness should serve as an example to fresh students, but this is not always the case. Many fresh students still fall victims of these vices. Some other times, challenges could be as minor as the most affordable way to get food or the best ways to save your money. Whatever the case may be, Saturday School Life compiled a guide to help new students thrive on campus.

Living conditions

Reports say that only about 25 % of Nigerian University students live on campus. This means that for every student who lives on campus, there are three others who face the stressful task of commuting to and from school every day.

Staying off campus isn’t just stressful, it could sometimes be dangerous. Most incidents of campus violence usually take place off campus. But if you can’t make the 25%, and need to stay in an off campus hostel, don’t be alarmed.

However, ensure that you do your best to investigate your off campus hostel. What sort of people stay there? What’s the security like? Be sure to begin searching as soon as possible to get the best deals available. If you need to share rent and board with someone else, do your best to find out about your future roommate’s character.

Choose friends wisely

You have probably heard it time and time again that bad company corrupts good manners. It might sound like a cliché to you; but it’s probably ageless because it’s true. No, you will not get special grades for making friends with the most popular people on campus. So don’t be so desperate that you can do anything for friendships. Take out time to pick friends that can spur you on morally and academically. Remember that although campus streets may sometimes seem like a movie set, you’re there to get a BSc, not an Oscar for ‘Best Friendship on set.’

Start studying on time

It could be pretty overwhelming when you get into school for the first time. There are lots of new places to learn about…let the library be one of them. Apart from registration and some periodic orientation programmes, your first few weeks will be the freest you’ll ever be in your schooling career.

Too early for trouble

There are so many things you need to prove when you get into school. That you can break the rules and get away with it is not one of them. The thing about trouble is that your record tends to stay with you and put you into more and more trouble. If you don’t know the rules and regulations of the institution you are about to enter, find out, and if you can’t take the heat, don’t take the admission. Ask any parent; it’s more honourable to have a child stay at home than to have him expelled or suspended.

Watch your pocket

Cut your cloth according to your size. Don’t spend money because other people are doing the same. Budget properly before spending a kobo; appropriate for giving, spending and saving.

Activism with caution

Of course, you should not hesitate to fight for your rights. But be sure to do so within the rules and regulations of your institution, and without violence and threats.

This Boyfriend-Girlfriend thing

On campus, you will most likely be surrounded by more members of the opposite sex than you have ever been in your entire life. The choice whether or not to enter a relationship as soon as you get into school is yours. But bear in mind that you should get your priorities right, right from the start.

Celebrities / Tagbo’s Death: This Is What Killed Davido’s Friend by TrendedNG(f): 9:54am On Oct 10, 2017

The Medical Examiner’s Office autopsy has revealed the cause of death of 35-year-old Tagbo Umeike, the friend of Davido and Caroline Danjuma’s lover.

The result revealed that alcohol played a major role in the death and also showed that he had alcohol and drugs in his system capable of easing a person into the early stages of hypothermia and eventual death.

The toxicology tests detected alcohol (Bacardi 151, 75.5% Alcohol) and topiramate, a medication for epilepsy and/or migraines in a man’s system, in Tagbo Umeike.’

Tagbo’s blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) was at 0.112, higher than the 0.08 legal limit for normal human being state, the coroner’s office stated.

While his family claims that Tagbo “didn’t have a prescription for any type of topiramate medication”, the coroner’s office stated that the amount of drug in Tagbos’ system was in the “therapeutic range.”

A statement by the coroner’s office said,

“Alcohol and topiramate are synergistic. When combined, the effect of either or both drugs is enhanced.”
“Topiramate, like alcohol, can cause dizziness, impaired memory, impaired concentration, poor coordination, confusion and impaired judgment.
“Central nervous system depression, or impairment, combined with cold exposure can hasten the onset of hypothermia and death

If you thought TSTV is DSTV’s biggest problem, you might have to think again. Facebook is coming to play.

The English Premier League sold the rights to the Premier League in Africa to Super Sport for 296 million pounds for the 2016–2019 period. In 2018, these rights will be auctioned again, and Facebook might be interested in buying those rights. Not just for Africa, but for the entire world. According to Facebook, 2 billion people use Facebook monthly, and 650 million of them are sport fans.

What’s in it for Facebook?

According to an April 2017 update, there are currently 170 million Africans on Facebook. A large percentage of that number, probably more, are men. Winning these rights will not only see increased engagement of Facebook, it will see more sign ups just for the love of the game.

Facebook’s head of sports, Dan Reed, said this in London:

“The Premier League is a very important partner of ours and we work with them very closely.

But it would be premature to speculate how we might approach that opportunity — it’s still very early days and there is no template for this.”

While this is still mostly rumours and speculations, it’s not hard to tell that giants like Amazon and Facebook will come knocking soon. And it makes sense.

In 2016 alone, Facebook spent over $50 million dollars paying publishers to do create more live video on the platform. There’s been chatter of a Facebook TV coming soon, with the blue giants paying as much as $10,000 per episode for original TV shows.

Facebook already has broadcast deals with Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer and the World Surf League. There was also an unsuccessful £450m bid to broadcast cricket’s Indian Premier League.

By July this year, Facebook had already broadcast more than 3,500 different sports events, live. From Champions League Games in the United States, to Mexican League Football.

What does the big picture look like?

Think of all the people subscribed to DSTV mostly because of the Premiership. Now, watch subscriptions plummet. It’s quite predictable that telcos to create special tariff plans for this.

While it might too early too tell what the outcome will look like, it’s not hard to tell it’s no longer a matter of ‘if’, but of ‘when’. But we can be sure the terrestrial guys won’t be going down without a fight.

TrendedNG:

While a lot of people have speculated about Simi‘s private life and her relationship with Adekunle Gold and Falz, the singer has finally addressed the rumours, saying she’s not willing to talk about her personal life but she’s currently dating someone.

In a recent interview with Punch, Simi discussed how she actually met the both of them.

“I met Adekunle Gold while I was performing at an event centre in Lagos. Unknown to me, he had been listening to me since I was a gospel artiste and he said he was a fan of my music. At that time, I just knew him as a graphic artist, popularly referred to as the ‘King of Photoshop’. I didn’t even know he was a singer, but we just became close from there. As for Falz, he heard one of my works, and he reached out to me on Twitter. From there, we hooked up in the studio and did some things together. Soldier was actually my song, and when he heard it, we decided to work together on it.”

She also revealed that her petite stature prompted her to be very outspoken as a young girl. “While growing up, I was a bit defensive. Because of my small size, I always thought that people were trying to take advantage of me. I’m not an easy person to bully. I have a mind of my own, and I always say whatever I’m feeling; I don’t hold back. But my voice has always worked to my advantage. However, I hate it when people mimic me, or treat me like a child because of my voice.”

When asked if she’s scared people will react badly to her latest album, she said, “I am not afraid of failure because I feel you learn even when you fail. I was more interested in thinking of how people would react to the songs in the album. It’s not possible for everybody to like a particular thing. Even for the biggest legends in the world; they have some people who don’t like them. I was once signed to a record label for four years but things didn’t work out well. There were times that I was really frustrated, but I have never wanted to stop doing music. Music is the one thing I’m very passionate about.”
