RAYMOND’S POV

The past two months had been quite fun for me. I had never felt so alive since Olivia died. After that dinner I had with Nene, I wanted to see her more and more. Sometimes when she is leaving the hospital after work, I will corner her and convince her to go out with me to one of the restaurants located close to her house or her church to sit and talk. We had talked about different things. I had gotten to know her better through our talks. Talking to her had achieved a lot of things I couldn’t achieve even with all the visits to the psychologist after Olivia’s death. She was so good with Naeto maybe because she was a paediatrician but to me she was a natural. Nene made me to see a different aspect of life. The bright and funny side of life as she calls it. When she had told me about losing her father at an early age to lymphoma and her mother shortly afterwards and her brother who was a teenager then left the country in search of a better life and she hadn’t heard from him since then. I had felt for her at that moment but I was amazed at how she had grown to be a very successful young woman. I had asked her her secret and her response was ‘It’s God’s doing Ray. You know that trying moment when it seems that all hope is lost, when you have nowhere to run to, when the tunnel is dark, I experienced that Ray but the moment I handed all my worries to God, he took care of my troubles ,I didn’t have to worry anymore. He already knows what you are about to ask him even before you do. Some people may think that you are putting all your eggs in one basket but there is nothing wrong in doing that because you trust the basket not to break the eggs. That’s my secret Ray, trusting God and he has never disappointed me.’ I was not really a church going person. The last time I remember going to church was at Olivia’s burial but I made sure Naeto goes to church on Sundays with Lauretta. Nene had taught me how to say some thanksgiving prayers to God because that is the first step to being close to God. Sometimes, we ended our outings by attending the late evening mass at her church. Last Sunday, I had found myself in Church. When we do not see during the day, we spend hours talking on the phone till we sleep off.
Naeto and I were driving back from our usual Friday’s night out when he called me from the back seat where he was, ‘my daddy.’
‘Yes buddy.’ I answered focusing on the road
‘Can we go on a picnic with doctor Nene tomorrow?’ he asked chirpily.
‘And why is that/ I thought you saw her when she took you out for a milk shake yesterday?’
‘Because…….because….’ Naeto stuttered.
‘I am listening’
‘Because I want her to be my new mommy.’
I felt a sharp pang on my chest. I had thought I was the only person thinking along that line, I didn’t even know that my little boy was also thinking the same.it is no surprise that she had gradually warmed her way into our hearts and has decided to say.
‘Let me be the one to decide that buddy but you will still be considered okay. About the picnic, ehhm lt me see.’ I pretended to think about it. I had already made up my mind to see her. We haven’t ally had time to talk or see each other this week due to my business. I had been trying to finalize the take-over of an almost liquidating newspaper and fortunately it came through yesterday. I really missed her smiles and laughter.
‘Don’t you have homework to do?.’ I asked
‘My daddy, our teacher didn’t give us any homework.’ he replied pouting. I could see him from the front mirror.
‘Okay, you are lucky son but it depends on..’
‘Depends on what my daddy?’
‘if she is going to agree.’
‘She will dad.’ He said sounding so sure of himself.
‘And how are you so sure of that?’
‘Because I like her, she likes me, she likes you and you like her my daddy.’
‘Hmmm, we will call her when we get home okay.’
‘Yes, yes, I love you my daddy!’ he screamed excitedly from the back.

When we got home after showering and having dinner, Naeto came up to me and asked ,’dad, can we call her now?’ I picked my phone from the side stool and dialled Nene’s number. It rang about two times before she finally picked. She sounded so tired. We spoke for about three minutes. ‘Naeto wants t talk to you.’ I said and handed the pone to Naeto. We had decided to go to Gurara waterfall. They chatted for about 20 minutes before Naeto yawned tiredly telling me he is already feeling sleepy. He handed the phone back to me and laid on the couch.
‘ I hope he didn’t wear you out because he has already fallen asleep on the couch.’
‘Haha, No he didn’t, you know I actually forgot I was so tired till he yawned. Thank you for the invitation. I was just thinking of a very good way to spend tomorrow after all the stressful time at the hospital.’
‘I wasn’t the inviter. It’s Naeto who brought the idea. ‘Oh that’s so nice of him. Please don’t forget to give him two beautiful kisses for me.’ ‘ I will dear’ I said. We talked for some 10minutes before we said our goodnights and hung up. I picked Naeto from the couch and carried him up to his room. I tucked him and gave him the two kisses Nene requested I watched him sleep for some minutes remembering how he was talking so animatedly to Nene and when he declared his love for her. I smiled. I can’t wait for our little family to be complete and with that smile still on my lips, I walked to my room, said some thanksgiving prayers to God and slept off.

jendox: Well, for u to be a padiatrician or paediatric surgeon as d case may be u have to undergo different residency training. One is under d college of surgeon n the other college of physician. In nigeria, very few hospital (private) are accredited to train residents and dey r nt in isolation. Plus do u mean st claire is d largest children hospital or largest hospital in northern nigeria?
what I write is fiction. I do not necessarily have to write down what happens around us in Nigeria. It is called creativity. Thinking outside the box. St Anne is the largest hospital in Northern Nigeria

BreeChoco: Lovely writeup... Do keep it up!
Certain facts don't jive here though-

1. St Anne's or St Maurice's hospital?

2. Kainene went to bed around 6:45am and woke up 6:00am?
. Try and read it again. What I meant was that her usual time for waking up is 6:00a.m. But she woke up7:30a.m. Thank you for noticing the mistake about the hospital. I have corrected that.

jendox: Nice story so far. However, certain things needs clearing up concerning the paediatric hospital as per what Dr. Nene does. There is a difference between a paediatrician and a paediatric surgeon. U seem to be mixing it up a little. Also, a resident is someone undergoing training as such its unlikely/impossible for them to be asked to head a unit. Plus there is hierachy in medicine. U didn't tell us if she was a resident, senior resident or consultant paediatrician. The story I must confess is coming up nicely but try to avoid over describing your scenes. Waiting patiently for your next update!
thank you. I made some research, maybe I didnt research enough. the residency exam she took is probably the last one meaning she is a senior resident. lets say she both acts as a pediatrician and pediatric surgeon. the setting is a private hospital and dr olubanjo is the owner and c.e.o. he has the right to choose whoever he wants because to him hardwork matters but he cannot choose without the board thats why he only nominated. its possible she may not even become the head, thank you once again for your criticism. i will try and correct that part.

CONTINUATION.

Later that evening, I had already showered and sitting in front of the dressing table applying my make-up when Preye entered my room.
‘Going out?’
‘Yes’
‘Where to?’
‘Dinner’
‘With who?’
‘A friend’
‘He doesn’t have a name’
‘Of course he does. I will tell you but I need help. I can’t find the right dress to wear.’
‘Amina, Amina, please come!’, Preye shouted outside my room. Amina came rushing into my room. ‘Preye what is it?’ she asked sitting down on my bed. ‘Looks like you are going out this evening Kaine.’
‘Yes I am.’ I replied. Preye who was in my closet turned around and said, ‘This our friend here likes keeping things from us. Tapping my shoulders from behind, she came and stood infront of me and continued, ‘You remember what I said on the morning of Eedris’ birthday about ....’
‘Dates, dresses and tips right?’
‘Yes, thank god you can remember things Amina. It has happened. She is now asking me which dress to wear for a dinner date with Mr No name.’
‘Its not really a dinner date Preye, it is just a thank you dinner. The man I told you about who was involved in an accident with his son three weeks ago came to the hospital this morning with his son and invited me for a thank you dinner and I accepted thats all.’
‘So he is not married?’ Amina asked.
‘He was, not until five years ago when he lost his wife during childbirth.’
‘Aww, thats so sad,so that little boy is motherless?’
‘Yes, he is.’
‘So what do you want to wear?’
‘Just something simple and nice.’ I replied. Amina stood up from the bed and went to my closet, after some minutes, she came out with a navy blue cap sleeve peplum drees stopping just above the knees. ‘I think this will do.’ She said. I collected the dress from her and wore it. I went to the mirror infront of the bathroom door and I liked what I saw. I love it, thanks guys. I didn’t even know I own this beautiful gown. I put on my silver sandals, put finishing touches to my make-up before we headed downstairs. Before we could make it to the sitting room the door bell rang and Preye answered it. ‘Just on time.’ I thought.
‘Good evening ma’am. I am looking for Nene. Is she here?’ I heard Raymond ask Preye outside the door. ‘If you mean Kainenechukwu, then yes, she lives here, you may come in.’ she said opening the door widely for him to enter. I looked at her face and I couldn’t help but laugh because she looked like someone who had just won a visa lottery to Nicargua. I stepped forward to make the introductions. ‘Hi Raymond, this is Amina and Preye my friends and housemates; guys, this is Raymond.
‘Nice meeting such beautiful ladies, he said shaking Amina and Preye simultaneously.
‘Its our pleasure, they both replied. ‘what can we offer you?’
‘Dont worry, we are going out now if Nene is ready.’
‘Yes, I am.’ I said picking my purse from the sofa. I hugged the girls and wished them goodnight then left with Ray. I knew the girls will still be checking Ray out from the windows as we made our way to his car. He looked quite debonair today in a brown chinos pants, white vest and black blazers which perfectly matched his black Nissan Rogue. He opened the door to the passenger’s seat for me, ‘thank you.’ I said as he made his way to the driver’s side and drove out of the compound.

‘We are going to a Chinese restaurant. Hope you like Chinese food?’ Raymond asked looking at me for a while before focusing on the road. ‘Well I don’t hate any food. I eat practically anything once it is good for my body.’ I replied.
‘Nice.’ After some minutes he said, ‘Did I tell you you look dazzling tonight?’
‘No’
‘Well you do. You really look elegant. I like the colour. You look very different from what I have been used to.’ He said smirking.
‘And what have you been used to? Don’t tell me that you have been checking me out at the hospital, I di egwu Raymond.’ I said pretending to be upset. He laughed and I joined too in laughing.
We had dinner in an upscale and exclusive Chinese restaurant in Maitama. I didn’t even know I could eat so much in a day. We practically tried everything that was brought to our table from the Chow mein to the Kung pao chicken to jiangchai to suan cai. The funniest part was using the chopsticks. I had eaten Chinese foods before but I wasn’t used to it. Raymond was a perfect gentleman throughout the dinner, he had taught me how to use the chopsticks properly. We talked about different things from childhood to hobbies to work. He was the owner of a popular daily newspaper though not many people knew that. He had preferred his identity hidden. He also runs a consultancy firm. We talked about Neaeto and how he had wanted to follow his daddy to dinner but then his grandma had to convince him to stay by volunteering to play x-box with him. I had laughed at his description. After the dinner, we moved to the karaoke section and thrilled ourselves to singing some oldies. It was already some minutes when we finally made our way out of the restaurant. The drive back to the house was quiet but satisfying. When we reached the house, he switched off the ignition. I turned to look at Ray and said, ‘thank you Ray, i really had fun tonight. Its been a long time I enjoyed myself this much.’
‘It is my pleasure for being the one responsible for that. I also had fun too. I am also looking forward to more of these if you will accept.’ He said. We spend some minutes in silence each to his own thoughts. The silence was broken when Ray said, ‘Goodnight Nene’ then kiseed me lightly on the cheeks. I felt tingling sensation in my stomach. ‘Goodnight Ray.’ I said opening the door and slowly made my way into the house thinking about the future.

CHAPTER FOUR

Three weeks later as I drove into the hospital to resume work, I saw Naeto approach me in the parking lot. I smiled and spread my arms for him. He came running into my arms.'Hey Naeto, how are you today? I asked him gently ruffling his hair and pulling his chubby cheeks. He chuckled and said ' I am very fine thank you doctor.' He handed me a bouquet of flowers. The wonderful scent of the flowers wafted to my nose, 'Oh this is so lovely, thank you honey.' I said hugging him tightly then tickling him. He was chuckling and wriggling under my arms. Naeto had been discharged a week ago with a clean bill of health. I usually came to work early so I would be able to spend at least one hour talking to him. We had become good friends during those visits. I don't know what made me do that but I felt I had a deep connection with him. I may not be a psychologist but I was aware that he was lacking something emotionally. I later found out that it was the lack of a mother in his life. Pulling me to bend towards him, he whispered to me, 'my daddy is over there' he pointed to his father. I turned and saw Raymond at the door of a sleek Nissan Pajero. He waved at me and I waved back and mouthed 'thank you'. He smiled and came to meet us. 'How are you Nene?' He had shortened my name to 'Nene', in his own words, 'Kainenechukwu is too long but Nene was sweeter on the lips. After a short argument that the full name makes it meaningful, he still didn't concede and I had left it at that.
'I am fine, thank you.' I replied.

'Hey buddy, why don't you go to the car and wait for me while I discuss with the beautiful lady.' Raymond said to his son. I hugged Naeto again before he pulled away to make his way to his father's car. We watched him go until he entered the car then Ray turned to me and said,

'My boy really likes you. He couldn't stop talking about you since we came back from the hospital. He actually threw tantrums that he wanted to see you and I had to bribe him with chocolates and promise him we would see you today and here we are.'

'I really like him too. I missed him and his funny stories. But thank God he is well now.'

'Why don't we go out later tonight for a thank you dinner? '

'Are you asking me out on a date?' I asked. He grinned and replied, 'well think of it as one.'

'That will be lovely, thank you.'

'I will come and pick you up by 7:00 p.m.. What's your address?'

'Its 179 Jibola street, Wuse Zone 2 behind Ministry of Tourism.' I replied.

'I think I know the place. Thank you for accepting my invitation.'

'It's my pleasure. I have to head in now.'

'Yes, let me not keep you waiting. See you later tonight.' I smiled, picked my bag from the passenger seat then closed the door. I saw Naeto waving at me from the back of his father's car. I waved back and blew him a kiss. I watched them drive away from the parking lot then I turned and made my way into the hospital.

KAINENE'S POV.

When I heard the sound of the door open and close I turned and in front of me was the same handsome man who was involved in an accident last night on a wheelchair looking at me. Last night I couldn't see his face properly but right now it was as clear as crystal. He looked like he had just stepped out of the cover of a GQ magazine. We stood there staring at each other for some minutes before I said,' Good morning Mr Nwachukwu, I am Dr Kainene and I am the pediatrician in charge of your son.' he nodded and I continued 'I and my team have been able to stabilize him so he is out of danger. But we have to keep him for a week or more depending on how quick he recovers.'

' Thank you doctor, can I stay with him for a while?'

'Yes you can. He will need a familiar face when he wakes up. If your strength is up to it then fine.' I replied while adjusting the pillows on the bed.'Nurse make sure you contact me if there is any change in his condition.' As I turned to leave, the door was already opened from outside even before I could touch the door handle, an elderly woman probably in her early sixties in iro and buba came in shouting, 'Where is my son and grandson? They want to kill them for me, Olorun o ni je a raburu! Is my boy alright? She asked hugging Raymond then going close to the bed to see Naeto.

Yes he is, the doctor said he is out of danger but he needs time to recover.'

'Oh my boy. Omo omo mi yo yee. Enitan will live.' She had named him Enitan when she first came to the hospital room after Naeto was born.. 'How are you Raymond?'

'I am fine mama. I will be discharged tomorrow. When did you come?'

'Just now o, I heard it from Abdul the driver who came to pick me from the airport so I told him to drive me to the hospital.' she said while unwrapping and wrapping back her buba.

'Lauretta is at the house. Why don't you go home and freshen up, by the time you come back, Naeto will be awake by then.'

'Okay my son, if you say so but don't hesitate to call me if Enitan wakes up.' Then she turned to me and said,'Thank you doctor.'

'You are welcome ma. I am just doing my job. I will be going now.' I said.

'Thank you doctor Nene.' Raymond said. I just smiled and left the room.

No, it doesn't. Marriage because of pregnancy doesn't guarantee anything. It doesn't even guarantee you a happy marriage. It doesn't even guarantee that the baby will live. Heck,it doesn't add anything. So it is better to zip up until you have walked the aisle.
