Most mechanics earn comfortably than lawyers. I used to like law until I saw a lawyer on suit and palm sandals carrying a bag of rice he bought and crossing the road. He priced the bike man and it looked like it was too expensive and my man legged it to his house of about 15mins in that hot sun!
Let's pretend like it's not the fattest pockets that win cases in Nigeria and those fat pockets aren't looking for fresh graduates mostly..they cann have SANs on speed dial or those with popular chambers or recognition. Every other to them is "charge and bail."
Go to the court. You will understand better when you see some lawyers dey hustle lonely clients there.
The country made a profession I so much used to admire lack the respect it used to have. Even the Nigerian law doesn't respect her lawyers.
To put into perspective, before an average Nigerian lawyer can buy a land or a car in Nigeria, you suppose know say en do go defend wetin fit bounce back anytime sooner.
For doctors and pharmacists, I respect them. But only doctors who have hospitals are cashing out. Also, pharmacists who have the capital to setup their pharmacy will excel or its another one very bad angle of suffering and smiling...because you need a certain amount of capital to not look like those 'chemist' shops.
Those employed are like the regular civil servants.. and dem also dey go outside work.
For petroleum engineering, you can still read it and be earning ₦25k as a fuel attendant. The job is saturated with big men's children and unborn children names.
For banking, you can work as an accountant without reading accounting or banking and fin. in Nigeria. The biggest paid employees didn't use their CV. They used a phone call.
For Economics, pray make hunger no kill you, you hear?
This is the rot in Nigeria. Disclaimer: I am not referring to nepos. I am referring to the un-nepos. I like your writing skills, you will make more buck writing than whatever program you are developing. Now that entrepreneurship is now a course in the university, I wonder why the OP ignored that vital profession, maybe he didn't see it as a profession but as a hustle. Agriculture is another field that is printing money if you develop your skill in a particular area within the agricultural field. Lastly politics as a profession and not a course of study is a high paying job in Nigeria, it is very rare for a politician to lose, you lost an election but your opposition still gives you contract, your party mark you for future position and you still get some dough for participating in an election and if you are smart like Obi, you create a GoFundMe and cash out from your diaspora admire. |

It is the state government I blame who see an opportunity to provide power for their people but chose to leave it in the hand of moribund Disco. If 10 state government can partner with foreign companies to generate and distribute power to his state then all these nonsense will stop.
But Disco days are numbered as many are porting to solar system and only use Nepa as back up. Until they lose the revenue from majority of Nigerians they will continue to mess with the masses |
Politics › Re: See How Much Money Each DISCO Made From Billing by Ttalk: 4:44pm On Aug 26*. Modified: 5:04pm On Aug 26 |
nairalanda1: The values given by OP show otherwise. Discos are underpaying the gencos, because they are not raising enough to pay the gencos' bill
And they even have to still pay running costs, salaries, etc, so...they end up using part of their revenue to pay the gencos, underpaying the gencos even further.
That's why government has to allow discos charge a cost reflective tarrif. And NIgerians have to accept that electricity is expensive. Your argument sounds like a bandit solicitor, it doesn't make any sense at all. If we should take your assumption, then Disco is running a charity business, they are subsiding Nigerians in the name of business! Are they NGO? Power sectors have been privatized more than 10 years, are you saying the business has been running at a loss? Are you privilege to see their annual report? Tell me one businessman who run his business at a loss and don't want to do anything about it. |
Politics › Re: See How Much Money Each DISCO Made From Billing by Ttalk: 2:21pm On Aug 26 |
nairalanda1: Simple, they enforce the laws...which means that government actually prosecutes people for power theft.
Nigeria does not do that.
If you do not pay your kids school fees, your children would be sent home, and no jupiter would move the principal or owner to let them back in until you show proof of payment
If you do not pay your data and recharge card, you won't get internent and phone service. At best you would be able to recieve call for some time, before it ends eventually, and then they reallocate your line, since your not paying into it means you are not using it.
If you do not even pay DSTV money, DSTV will cut you off. Your screen would show e-16 message, and it would stay there until you pay something in...at full price for the package. And you cannot do illegal connection
Pipe borne water, the same thing...though since it is subsidised, the water corps cannot provide everyone with water, so you pay for it in borehole fees and buying water fees.
ELectricity,? People can bypass their meters, and when the discos come, they would chase them with weapons. Whole villages would even chase away disco workers coming to enforce bill collection, and then reconnect themselves to the grid and stop paying, so it ain;t the same. You are still not making sense with your defense, how is it possible for neighbouring. African countries to meter their consumers and eliminate power theft? Are you saying DISCO are handicapped in enforcing compliance of their consumer rules? Are you saying DISCO are incapable to cut you off if you don't pay bill? |
Politics › Re: See How Much Money Each DISCO Made From Billing by Ttalk: 2:04pm On Aug 26 |
nairalanda1: The discos recieved ₦328.95bn worth of electricity from the gencos. And to pay for that bill they raised the following money... ₦252.87bn billed ie from customers.
That means that they need a further 76 billion naira to be able to pay the gencos in full, money they cannot raise because they cannot charge a cost reflective tarrif for most consumers. And because 20% of their consumers are not paying (higher as you go to the North).
Note that discos also have to pay for transformers , poles, wires, and also have to pay running costs and so forth from that 252 billion naira. Since it is not enough to even pay the gencos basic bill, they cannot even pay for all those things. That is why you are buying wires, poles and transformers for them. Again, subsides on power are not paid in full, and even then are not enough.
As a result, you do not have light, because the sector is running at a loss. And the subsidy government is supposed to pay them is not paid. And tinubu self is not paying his bills for electricity on aso rock.
Hence the need for government to pass a law that let's discos charge a cost reflective tarrif, so that in the long run, investment would be attracted, and more money would flow in, and at the end of the day, you would have better power supply. You seems not to be living in Nigeria, how many transformer has disco bought for your neighborhood since it's establishment. 90% of Transformers are procured by government interventions, corporate organisation, individual and helpless communities. You seems to be taking this your defense of Disco to far. It won't work as long as am here |
Politics › Re: See How Much Money Each DISCO Made From Billing by Ttalk: 1:54pm On Aug 26 |
nairalanda1: And in other news 60% of metered consumers bypassed their meters.
Metering is not the solution to unpaid bills, nor is it the only cause of unpaid bills. Most nigerians do not want to pay a cost reflective tarrif for electricity. We mostly under pay or do not pay. The result is we get poor power supply.
If you ran a business where the minority of your consumers paid full price for your service, you won't have much of a business would you. Tell us how other countries manage the power theft that is impossible for your disco to do. If you claim Nigerians don't want to pay for electricity, how come they willing to pay for their pipie borne water, how come the pay their children school fees, pay for data, recharge card and DSTV subscription. It is an insult to Nigerian for you to make such blanket assumption that Nigerians are not willing to pay for electricity |

Politics › Re: Obi Backs Subsidy Removal, Says Mismanagement Of Proceeds Not Enough To Bring It by Ttalk: 3:10am On Aug 25 |
moscow007: Tinubu is not inherently evil, but his past makes him a liability to lead Nigeria.
Everything he has done has benefited those blackmailing him than it has benefitted Nigerians.
On Subsidy Removal: The best approach would've been "Osibanjo formular"...privatise the old refineries, use the proceeds to build modular refineries close to raw materials, ensure we process enough fuel for local needs, then remove subsidy. Same way NNPC adjusted price of crude oil per barrel for crude-dollar loan swap, adjust prices(subsidy) for crude supplied to all modular refineries as long as they sell to Marketers at Govt stipulated prices.
On Floating the naira: Again borrow Osibanjo's ideas, 90% of Nigeria's Dollar needs is for import, invite Chinese Exim bank to build infrastructure that will allows us transfer directly from our mobile apps to Chinese suppliers cutting off the dollar.
It doesn't make sense that our importers converts naira to dollar and later to RMB just to import from China thereby putting more pressure on our dollar needs.
On East-West Roads: Abandon the idea of a coastal highway till second tenure and rehabilitate the existing high ways, build a new port in Akwaibom (Akwaibom has the longest shoreline in Nigeria) and reduce articulated vehicles pressure on the East-West Roads.
On Energy: Copy Abia formular and fund independent power plants in each State on BOT agreement with the private sector.
The only reason why Tinubu will never do any of these things is due to vested interests and foreign powers blackmailing him with his Narcos file.
Those in power knows how to fixing Nigeria is not rocket science, u just need a nationalistic leader without bargages, Osibanjo would've done it.
Give Tinubu 100 years he will not do anything differently neither will he fix Nigeria, his bargages won't let him. Why do you write lengthy Epistles only to fill it with lies. For your information, Ondo state has the longest shoreline in Nigeria with the length of 180km and not AkwaIbom. Again what has having longest shoreline even have to do with port viability? |
Politics › Re: Atiku Restoring Fuel Subsidy Is Outright Deception To Win Election – Shehu Sani by Ttalk: 9:10pm On Aug 23 |
zbigniew: Nigerians this is the time to take note of your enemies...They are coming out one by one... Even Shehu Sani that built a reputation as a pro poor and pro masses policy has changed his garb...These are the real turn coats.and not Atiku...In their haste to demonize Atiku, they couldn't even take the time to listen to what he actually said...Atiku actually said previously he had supported removal of subsidy but now having seen its effect on the masses he is convinced it is not a good policy now and hence it should be reversed....This is just like a Doctor looking at the effects of his prescription and asking the patient to cease taking the drugs... Should the doctor allow the patient to die by continuously administering the drug even when he can see its adverse consequences? Is it not the mark of an intelligent mind to change his mind when a superior evidence appears? Funny enough all the quacks masquerading as economists and experts fighting themselves to defend this cruel policy cannot give one example of any country that has gone through such a tragic reform and emerged better....There is not enough space to list countries that have suffered from such radical reforms but i will give two major examples....The UK under Thatcher decided to adopt free market laissez faire policies in the 1970s and removed subsidies... The result today is the UK has lost all its industries and now just a trading post for US and Chinese goods in addition to being one big casino for gamblers (All manner of betting schemes)... Germany is an industrial giant currently declining in slow motion when it decided to commit suicide to (1) kill its cheap nuclear energy sources (2) Begin to invest and switch to expensive and unstable renewable energy and finally (3) Ban the use of cheap energy coming from Russia...Today the Germans are running helter skelter looking for a way out....A cheap source of energy however it is realised is a sine qua non for industrial growth...
Now the most disingenuous argument is to claim that subsidy never benefitted the masses...The Government and the elites have formed a consensus to ensure that the masses do not even understand what is good for them and so they will continue to send propagandists like Shehu Sani to tell you that you are not benefitting from what you know you are benefitting from.... Subsidy on refined fuels can be done and the world will not end... Opponents ignore a basic fact that the major raw material for fuel is crude oil and it is available in Nigeria sufficiently for our domestic consumption.... Fortunately we are now capable of refining locally our total consumption...So local crude oil plus local refining equals self sufficiency... Determining the price of crude for domestic consumption is a political decision and not a market decision so long as the price of crude sold to domestic refiners is not below the cost of producing the crude...This is really what the quacks do not want Nigerians to know...I repeat - The price of selling LOCALLY PRODUCED CRUDE OIL TO LOCAL REFINERIES is a political decision so long as the price of the crude is not below the cost of producing the crude...
There is a stupid concept called border prices introduced and promoted by resource poor countries to claim that the price of crude oil produced in Bayelsa and sold to a refinery in Bayelsa must be same with the price of that same crude sold to a refinery in Japan...The whole nonsense is based on the economic concept of opportunity cost...
Fellow Nigerians subsidy on crude oil price does not mean Nigeria is not making money from selling at a discount to local refineries, it only means that the price will be lower than it would have sold to foreign buyers...So God's sake what is wrong with this...Atiku is not proposing to pay importers subsidy for importing fuels, he is proposing to sell crude oil at a discount which of course will not be below the cost price to local refineries so that they have lower cost of production and they sell at a lower price to Nigerians...Again what can be wrong with this!!! You are writing long epistle to defend Atiku. Atiku that couldn't defend his post on Deborah who was gruesomely murdered by Muslim fanatics . What makes you think he will honour his subsidy return when he is faced with reality |

brain54: :::
You that your brain box is activated and working.
First of all in all I said what part of proper planning, management and control don't you understand?
What part of subsidy removal worth reconsidering can you not understand?
I emphasized If it can be properly planned.
You are slow to compare yourself with secondary students.
Now that subsidy was removed has they been a decrease in foreign loan obligations?
On the contrary they has been increase in loans this government has collected. Statistics shows it is the highest so far of all past governments. Outdoing loans of previous governments that operated subsidy. Loans no one sees what they are used for.
The major challenge of subsidy was corruption and smuggling of subsidised petroleum products to neighboring countries.
If that is tackled effectively then a major part of the subsidy puzzle is solved.
Nigeria sits on a gold mine of natural resources and opportunities yet is complaining of revenue (generating ) shortages and the only lazy idea tinubu can come up with is increased taxation and foreign loans.
Do you know nigeria is not meeting up with it's quota of barrels for crude production which they only just managed to increase recently- which still is a short fall of its 1.5 million barrels?
Talk about a person living at the bank of a river yet using spittle to wash himself.
There are hundreds of ways any serious government can generate revenue which the present government is sleeping on. Which can cover for subsidy.
The potential of Agriculture alone asides other lucrative prospects is enormous. Where are our cocoa, rubber, groundnut, oil palm farms? At a point in our history these are what sustained our country's economy.
These can provide jobs for many youths today who are unemployed. They are countries even in Africa till today whose economy is run and dependent on agricultural produce like Cocoa. Ivory Coast is an example, so is Ghana whose economies benefit from these produce. And they aren't even maximizing the full potentials yet because what they do is export the raw products rather than refine them to chocolate and other derivatives.
Yet you open mouth wahhh telling me about poor revenue generation and even insulting jabs when Nigeria has all these potential (and you probably comprehended less than 10% of the comment you mentioned.) That's where proper planning and management of both the economy and subsidy comes in.
It's only on nairaland that an empty barrel will call person names while proposing a barren argument.
Even daring me to address your empty points. Imagine that... but I don't blame you.
I blame myself for stooping too low and giving some of you audience here.
::: I warned you not to digress and stick to the topic but you think writing epistle means making sense.
