Nairaland / General / Re: Which Is The Best Between Nigeria And Ghana? What Is You Take? by Tumuzi: 11:04pm On Nov 15, 2010 |
nigeria is more diverse (ethnically) than Ghana is so its bound to be alot more political corruption in nigeria than ghana, its really hard to compare a country as small as ghana to nigeria, its better to compare ghana to ivory cost or something, they have more similarties |
Politics / Re: Sultan Seeks Ban On BBC Over Negative Lagos Documentary by Tumuzi: 5:01am On May 06, 2010 |
nigerians are sumtimes SO ignorant when it comes to REALITY any reasonable person who watched the WHOLE entire documentary will realize that it actually did JUSTICE to Lagos's image. It showed hard working religious people who have family ties. And lets be serious in REALITY the MAJORITY of Lagos DOES live in POVERTY. SO all this ranting going on about how nigeria was portrayed is pure bullshit, |

Andre Uweh:The culture of people called "Igbo" today is old. But the self "identity" and "ethnicity" of being "Igbo" all began in the slave era. Why else do you think Igbo people have always been politically fragmented as a society. Have you read the writings of Olaudah Equiano a former igbo slave he explains this quite clearly about how he became to know himself as Igbo. And the slave masters could care less what about the true identity of slaves, they were there to make money. "Igbo" in a sense is a coined term due to a significant period of invasions, the same way "Bantu" is a coined term to a lot of africans by Europeans. There is a lot of information about how Igbos came to know themselves as Igbo people. The truth is slavery is a big part of the reason, its sad but its true. Why else is there not a clear cut meaning of "Igbo" because people never saw themselves as such before the white man came thats a FACT. Theres a lot of evidence on the transgressions of Igbo identity. This book is a start. http://books.google.com/books?id=rzBBUKRO4DwC&pg=PA31&lpg=PA31&dq=Violence,+Migration,+and+Becoming+Igbo&source=bl&ots=Ey54uqSdX3&sig=v8-nWVo6gcrG_RXaTmH_5zBbsRo&hl=en&ei=42bcS9HJHobK9gTLp6WyBw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CA0Q6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=Violence%2C%20Migration%2C%20and%20Becoming%20Igbo&f=false |

The thing people fail to understand is that nobody called themselves Igbo before british came to nigeria. Do you even know the meaning of the word "Igbo." The way people use it today to identify themselves originated in the slave era. In precolonial times "igbos" did not refer to themselves as such. So in reality people languages and customs to the so called "Igbo" are not denying anything at all. Holp this helps the confusion people have about the term "Igbo." ***Im new to nairaland by the way, i think this is a very interesting website, so ill posting from time to time |
