Education › "Many Will Lose Jobs To Robots": Artificial Intelligence At It Again by Tunadexy(op): 7:44pm On Nov 19, 2018 |
The hallmark of our world is change. Every aspect of our lives is constantly disruptive by innovations and new technologies. According to history, every disruptive innovation is tailed by its fair share of treats and irrational concerns. Nevertheless no period in mankind history has any major change been greeted with as much fear as this age. Humans rule the world not because we are the strongest but because we are the smartest. What happens when we lose that position to machines? How about the millions of jobs that would be lost? How do you imagine AI as autonomous weapons in the wrong hands? More disturbing is the growing apprehension of redundancy of many who today work in the millions of jobs that may be unnecessary as robots and AI perform the same functions far more efficiently and even cheaper. What happens to pensions of retired humans when the majority of current workers are robots who earn nothing. AI, a concept whose time has come, has come to stay. It's just a matter of time. |

Education › The Vice President Of Nigeria Diminished My Passion For Art At ICC by Tunadexy(op): 9:37am On Nov 13, 2018 |
Very energetic and optimistic I was, hearing that the man I so much respect would be coming to the international conference centre, University of Ibadan for a programme. The drive and anxiety to present my artwork to the vice president of Nigeria made me violently close the GES 101 textbook I was reading, while preparing for a test. After completing the drawing by 3:30am on Saturday, I impatiently closed my eyes on my bed, while I flashed back to the test I wrote the previous day without preparing well, just because of the drawing. Getting to the school gate on Saturday morning, I discovered that day was a sanitation programme day and no car was moving. Driven by passion, I trekked to mokola, a one hour trek from UI gate just to get the drawing framed. To cut the long story short, I got to ICC only to discover that I wasn't given the opportunity to formally present the drawing. Driven by passion again, I ran into the road with the drawing highly lifted for the vice president to see when he was leaving but I was sent out of the road by his entourage. "I finally achieved my goal" was my thought when the vice president collected my drawing when he was about entering his car, but I will never forget his words "wow! this is nice" anytime I stare at the portrait in my room everyday. The vice President returned the drawing. Ever since that moment, my best friend (my pencil) became my enemy.I don't know when next I'll hold my pencil. Perhaps the drawing isn't nice

Education › Re: 10 Major Reasons Why Every Student In Nigeria Want To Study Abroad by Tunadexy(m): 8:42pm On Nov 12, 2018 |
GLOBALTOURISM: The rate at which Nigerians move abroad in their quest for education is on the increase. Students prefer to spend their money going abroad to study than study in Nigeria. This may be facilitated by some basic factors which may be personal to the individual, or factors that the Nigerian government have seen and don’t want to do anything about it. It is those factors or reasons that will be highlighted below. 1. Standard and method of teaching Most countries abroad apply an advanced method of teaching in their tertiary institutions. Some institutions make use of 4 curriculums of world most developed countries in teaching their students. This will help the students to be able to compete with fellow students from other countries. But in Nigeria, we make use of only 1 curriculum in teaching students. Students who are aware of these low standards of teaching will not hesitate to send their children abroad to study. 2. Rigorous means of getting admission into the institution In Nigeria today, before a child gets admission to any Nigerian institution, he or she has to pass through a rigorous means of testing. A student in Nigeria will after taking WAEC to be required to take JAMB, after that, he will also be required to take another exam in the institution before he or she will be given an opportunity to study in such institution. Most times, students are being exploited in order for them to get admission. These institutions do all these just to collect money from students. This has made some students prefer studying abroad than in Nigeria. 3. Low quality of education In Nigeria today, our standard of education is nothing to write home about. You will see a fresh graduate of electrical engineering who cannot fix a socket on the wall: because of how he was taught. Most of the Nigerian graduates cannot compete with graduates who study abroad in terms of what they studied. There is a lack of a good environment for learning. There is the absence of good infrastructures, laboratory equipment, etc. Students prefer to study abroad because of these low standards of our education found in Nigeria. 4. Incessant strike In Nigeria today, someone who is studying a 5 years course ends up in spending about 7-8 years in school. Not that he was failing, but because of the strike. For instance, in 2014, Nigerian universities embarked on a nationwide strike for about 8 months. This was followed by Nigerian polytechnics. Some students almost forgot that they were still students because they have to go look for work. No student will be happy to spend more the stipulated time he or she would have loved to spend in school. This strike issue is hardly experienced in the tertiary institutions abroad; which is why every Nigerian student would like to study abroad. 5. Better Job opportunities In Nigeria today, labor employers consider certificates and the source of such certificate before employment. A student who studied abroad has a higher opportunity of getting a better job more than the student who studied in Nigeria. Also, when you study abroad, you have a better chance of getting employment. This is because of the locality and the quality of the institution you are graduating from as a student. Also, the level of stress that one passes before getting a job in Nigeria is very high, therefore, one prefers settling abroad after studying, were chances of getting a job id high. 6. Preference for foreign certificates Most times, labor employers prefer certificates or degrees that come from abroad than those that come from Nigerian universities. For instance, a company looking for an electrical engineer will likely employ one with a certificate from a university abroad than one with a certificate obtained from a Nigerian University. This is because of the quality of education acquired by both, and also the institution per se. And the employers also believe that those who study abroad has an upper hand than those who study in Nigeria because they believe that those graduating from institutions abroad had a high quality of education than those who graduate from the Nigerian university. 7. Low cost of living The cost of living abroad is relatively low compared to the cost of living in Nigeria. The high cost of living as a student is high. A student will be paying relatively the same thing for a self-contained room as to what someone living in a two-bedroom flat will be paying. This is what is obtained in Nigerian university environments. Not only the house issue, but business people also tend to make merchandise of Nigerian students, because they think that they have the money. What you buy N100 in a Nigerian university environment will be sold at the rate of N50 in a non-university environment. This has made some students refer to study abroad than to study in Nigeria. 8. Behavioral development Behaviourally, students who studied abroad, especially in one of the world most developed countries, tend to put up a good and better behavior than students who study in Nigeria. Nigeria has been known worldwide to be a corrupt nation. Most times, individual Nigerian student tends to put up such stereotypical behavior. Students who study abroad tend to put up more civilized behaviors than those who study in Nigeria. Also, those students who study abroad tend to be law abiding and cautious than Nigerian students. 9. To brush up your Language skills Most Nigerian students want to study abroad so that they can know how to speak. You cannot compare the language of one who studied in U.K with the language of one who studied in Nigeria. The English they speak most e differently. The student who studies in U.K. will speak more excellent English than one who studied in Nigeria. Also, other students who study abroad tend to know more world languages than one who studied in Nigeria. 10. Gain a global mindset Most Nigerian student wants to study abroad so that they can know what is really happening around the world. When they leave their location, they will be able to gain more global mindset about the world than one who is in Nigeria. Abroad students will be able to have a wider view about global issues than one who studied in Nigeria.

Education › ASUU Strike: How Did Students React In Your School? by Tunadexy(op): 2:16pm On Nov 12, 2018 |
Noise, perhaps of joy filled the air in one of the hostels in the the University of Ibadan after ASUU announced the commencement of the strike on Sunday. Some of the students even brought out drums and musical instruments celebrating and dancing on the field. Some established the root of their happiness on the fact that the strike would enable them prepare more the the upcoming examination while some said they would be able to go home and see their family members they left long ago. However, confusion entangled the heart of some students who lamented that they wanted the session to finish that year.
The school began to be scanty after few days that the strike started. What baffles me up till now, is of a guy that left for his house the following morning the strike was announced.
Let's know students' reactions to the strike in your school. |
