Christianity EtcRe: What Is SIN Against The Holy Spirit? by turboG(op): 4:20pm On Apr 10, 2016
noted

johnw74:
The Holy Spirit did good works in Jesus,
the pharisees knew of the good works Jesus had done including casting out devils, but they claimed Jesus done them by the spirit of the devil.

Calling the good works of the Holy Spirit, works of the devils spirit, is the sin against the Holy Spirit that won't be forgiven.

Mat_12:24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.

Mat 12:31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
Mat 12:32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people? And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.

The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, who bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw. Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near. John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood ...

Isaiah 53:2-5 ESV / 20 helpful votes

For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed.

Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure.

Christianity EtcWhat Is SIN Against The Holy Spirit? by turboG(op): 4:31pm On Apr 05, 2016
What is SIN against the Holy Spirit?

Mark 3:28-30: “Truly I tell you, all sins and blasphemes will be forgiven for the sons of men. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, but is guilty of an eternal sin. He said this because they [the Pharisees] were saying, ‘He has an evil spirit‘.”

The SIN against the Spirit” is mentioned in Mark 3:22-30 and Matthew 12:22-32. The word blasphemy may be generally defined as “the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence.” The term can be applied to such sins as cursing God or willfully degrading things relating to God. It is also attributing some evil to God, or denying Him some good that we should attribute to Him. This case of blasphemy, however, is a specific one, called “the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit” in Matthew 12:31. In Matthew 12:31-32, the Pharisees, having witnessed irrefutable proof that Jesus was working miracles in the power of the Holy Spirit, claimed instead that the Lord was possessed by the demon “Beelzebub” (Matthew 12:24). Now notice that in Mark 3:30 Jesus is very specific about what they did to commit “blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.”

This blasphemy has to do with someone accusing Jesus Christ of being demon-possessed instead of Spirit-filled. As a result, this particular incidence of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit cannot be duplicated today. Jesus Christ is not on earth—He is seated at the right hand of God. No one can witness Jesus Christ performing a miracle and then attribute that power to Satan instead of the Spirit. The closest example today would be attributing the miracle of a redeemed person’s changed life to Satan’s power rather than to the effects of the indwelling Holy Spirit.

While God’s ability to save is boundless, the Bible clearly shows that there are certain conditions under which He will not save. For instance, God will not save those who neglect or despise Christ’s sacrifice in an effort to find an alternate salvation plan.

‘For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins’ (Hebrews 10:26).

This warning pertains to those who ‘trample under foot the Son of God’ and regard His blood as unclean (Hebrews 10:29). God the Father has appointed His Son’s sacrifice as the sole way of salvation and will not grant salvation to those who seek it by any other means.

The blasphemy of the Spirit today, which is the same as the unpardonable sin, is the state of continued unbelief. There is no pardon for a person who dies in unbelief. Continual rejection of the Holy Spirit’s promptings to trust in Jesus Christ is the unpardonable blasphemy against Him. Remember what is stated in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Further on in the same chapter is the verse “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him” (John 3:36). The only condition wherein someone would have no forgiveness is if he is not among the “whoever believes in Him,” for it is he who “rejects the Son.”

‘Panama Papers’ Corruption Scandal Breaks the Internet

There is an important spiritual lesson here. While Satan wants Christians to commit public sins that damage our witness and harm other people, he is also pleased with our “secret” sins.

#PanamaPapers was the top trending topic on Twitter yesterday. It is trending on Facebook and on the front page of reddit.

Why? What is this all about?

Yesterday, news broke of a year-long investigation into offshore shell corporations. These companies have been used by some of the world’s most notable politicians and leaders to hide billions of dollars. The investigation is being called the “Panama Papers” scandal because the information was leaked from a Panamanian law firm, Mossack Fonseca, by an anonymous source.

The data was initially obtained by the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung and shared with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). The scope of the leak is massive—11.5 million documents on 214,000 shell companies spanning a period from 1977 to 2015. This may be the largest leak of classified information in history. Nearly 400 journalists in more than twenty-five languages have worked on the story over the last year.

According to the BBC, the leak reveals information about seventy-two current or former heads of state. Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad, Egypt’s former President Hosni Mubarak, and Libya’s former leader Muammar Gaddafi were included. According to The Guardian, associates of Russian President Vladimir Putin secretly moved as much as $2 billion through offshore accounts.

Australia is investigating more than 800 wealthy clients of Mossack Fonseca for possible tax evasion. Iceland’s prime minister is allegedly tied to secret shell companies and now faces calls to resign. The leaders of Argentina, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Ukraine, and Pakistan are included in the report. Ian Cameron, late father of British Prime Minister David Cameron, was also a client, shielding his investment fund from British taxes.

The ICIJ plans to release the full list of companies and people linked to them in early May. We will learn much more as this scandal continues to unfold.

While many who used these shell companies broke no laws, some apparently did. Now they are learning the truth of Scripture: “Be sure your sin will find you out” (Numbers 32:23). The “Panama Papers” scandal proves that “secret sin” is an oxymoron.

There is an important spiritual lesson here. While Satan wants Christians to commit public sins that damage our witness and harm other people, he is also pleased with our “secret” sins. He knows that all sin, whether public or private, separates us from our holy Father and the power of the Holy Spirit.

And he knows that we are more likely to tolerate, excuse, or even ignore our private sins, secure in the delusion that they have no consequence. According to C. S. Lewis’s demonic tempter Screwtape, “The safest road to Hell is the gradual one—the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts.”

The longer cancer remains, the more it grows.

This your question is an epic one.

But I think what we should look for is saving Life First.

you cannot just judge it based on legality.
let's examine a scenario, there was an accident on an express road and the driver is badly injured and losing blood fast. a pastor, his son and the driver where in the car, but only the driver got injured. The hospital is like 20 kilometres away and the car can still move. The son can drive, but his driver licence has expired. The pastor cannot drive. now will the pastor allow the son drive the injured person to the hospital knowing fully well he has no licence? would you say that the son had sin for driving the injured man to the hospital?
Christianity EtcIs It Robbing God To Tithe On Your After-tax (not Gross) Income? by turboG(op): 10:02am On Apr 04, 2016
Is It Robbing God to Tithe on Your After-Tax (Not Gross) Income?

No, It’s Robbing Yourself

Frederica Mathewes-Green

My husband and I were newly Christian and in seminary when a friend told us about tithing. She stressed the importance of giving a full 10 percent before taxes, before anything else, so that we would be giving God the first fruits of our labor.

We recoiled at the thought, but she said this practice had given God room to work miracles in her life. She and her husband had once put their last dollar in the offering plate, only to have the pastor turn around and give them the whole collection. My husband and I began this plan right away and never even considered making our tithe after taxes. It seemed petty to make such calculations when giving to a God who gave us everything, including his Son.

Soon, we had settled into a pattern of giving 5 percent to our local church and 5 percent to charity. But one year, when it was time to renew our annual pledge to the church, I was convicted that a radical increase was necessary. God says, “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse” (Mal. 3:10, ESV). For our family, that means the local church. So the full 10 percent should go to our church, while charitable gifts (alms) were to be an additional offering.

When I began sharing this with my husband, we were in for a surprise. He had separately come to the same conviction. The problem was that we had just promised 5 percent of our income to a missionary. Overnight, we went from giving 10 percent of our income to giving 15 percent.

Yet we never suffered. We saw God meet our needs in ways that bordered on the miraculous. People were always giving us things we needed but couldn’t afford: a sewing machine, a lawn mower, a new refrigerator. More than once, we found an inexplicable extra $50 in our savings account.

Over the years, our total giving (including alms) has ranged from 15 to 20 percent. We found, like others before us, that once we determined to make our tithe the first payment each month and this habit became routine, all other expenses fell into place.

God uses strong language about tithing (Mal. 3:8–9). We live in a time that is offended by that strong language, and resents any implication that we ought to do or not do something. We regard ourselves as customers, even in church, and expect to be treated with deference, for the customer is always right.

This kind of exhortation has a way of backfiring. So the best I can say is: At least try. Aim to give a percentage of your income. Start with whatever percentage you give now, and raise it a little each year. In time, you will reach the tithe.

Then you will be giving as generously as the people of the Bible, who lived in conditions we would see as abject poverty. Like them, pay God before you pay Caesar, for there is no better indication of your priorities.

No, Put Away the Calculator
David A. Croteau

The question here assumes that tithing in some way is required for Christians. The word tithe means 10 percent, not necessarily “a tenth of my income.” The biblical definition of a tithe is “giving 10 percent of one’s increase from crops grown in the land of Israel or cattle that feed off the land of Israel.” It was consistently connected to the land of Israel. A tithe was done multiple times a year, probably equaling more than 20 percent of crops. No one was ever commanded to give 10 percent from their general income (just crops and cattle). So unless you are under the Old Covenant and have crops based in the land of Israel or cattle that feed off the land of Israel, you do not qualify to tithe (Lev. 27:30–33; Num. 18:21–24; Deut. 14:22–29).

Does the Bible teach that neglecting to tithe is robbing God? Sort of. The question refers to Malachi 3:8–11. But the word for tithe in Malachi 3 refers to the definition noted above. Christians live under the New Covenant, so our standard for giving has changed. It’s not necessarily a higher or lower standard, but it is different.

Some people may hear, “Christians aren’t required to tithe,” and think it means, “Christians aren’t required to give.” Nothing could be further from the truth. The New Testament gives many principles for giving, but it never mandates a specific percentage or addresses after-tax or gross income.

For many prosperous US Christians, giving 10 percent could be considered “robbing God” (in a sense) because it does not meet the standard of generous giving. For those who make a more meager income, giving less than 10 percent could be generous and sacrificial. If I’m asking the question with the intent to decipher how little I can get away with giving, then a serious heart issue is exposed. When we are driven by the principles of giving from the New Testament, the after-tax question becomes irrelevant. God’s people should try to find ways to give more, not less.

What are some of those biblical principles?

There are three driving forces for Christian giving in 2 Corinthians 8. First, it is grace-driven. Our giving is a response to the grace that God has shown to us through Jesus Christ. The more we recognize that we have done nothing to deserve salvation, the more likely we are to respond to God’s grace by giving generously.

Second, Christian giving is relationship-driven (v. 5). Much Christian giving today is taught in such a way as to drive the Christian to a calculator. You type in your income, multiply that by 10 percent, and give the total, rounding up to include an offering. But God wants you to seek a relationship with him, not with your calculator.

Third, Christian giving is love-driven. In verses 8–9, Paul provides an example of this type of giving: Jesus’ death on the cross, the ultimate demonstration of love. In this way, our giving is a barometer of the genuineness of our love for God.

Yes, God’s Word Is Clear
Steve Stewart

There is no way to sugarcoat Malachi 3:8: “Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ In tithes and offerings.” Bible-based tithing does not fit comfortably into an era of complex payroll deductions.

To be sure, before-tax or after-tax giving of a tithe is not a salvation issue. Tithing is not in the Ten Commandments. God does not love us more or less because we adhere to an Old Testament mandate of giving a tenth of our first fruits.

Millions of Americans have jobs at companies that withhold Social Security, Medicare, and federal and state income taxes. This is done to assist individuals by placing money aside throughout the year so they don’t have to come up with all the money at tax time. If we are to base our tithe on after-tax income, are givers in states with income taxes robbing God more than income tax–free states?

There is a joke that goes, “If you want only net blessings, pay on the net. If you want gross blessings, by all means, pay on the gross.” But even while the joke encourages tithing on before-tax income, it approaches the topic in the wrong way. Tithing, based on any amount, is not about what we get but rather what we give.

I challenge Christians to consider off-the-top tithing another way to become more like Jesus. Giving is taking our eyes off ourselves. Giving with the right mindset steers our behaviors in a new direction. When we consider giving a tenth of our net versus our gross, we are really asking, “How much can I give without giving too much?” This is the spirit behind my daughter’s heavy sighs when I remind her to give a dime out of each precious dollar she earns. This kind of nonverbal response is rooted in our selfish nature that resists God’s request that we help build his kingdom by giving to our local church.

The definition of a tithe is a tenth of our first fruits (Prov. 3:9)—our income. And we are to pay Caesar what is Caesar’s. So the answer to our plight becomes clear.

By giving 10 percent off the top—the whole top—I came to grips with my selfish desires and challenges. Once I changed my heart, I was able to let go and began giving 10 percent of our gross income. We were blessed before we started giving off the gross, and I believe we are more blessed today. It’s not a quantifiable blessing or something I can show you. Erasing this debate from my mind allows me to focus more intensely on serving God.

Malachi is provoking our total dependence upon a loving, covenant God, not an everlasting guilt trip. When we tithe off the top, we rely more on God and less on our wallets.

Christian Couple Fined for Refusing to Allow Same-Sex Marriage at Their Bed and Breakfast

A Christian Illinois couple has lost a lawsuit to a gay couple whose civil union ceremony they refused to hold at their bed and breakfast.

Jim and Beth Walder, owners of the Timber Creek Bed & Breakfast in Paxton, Illinois, were fined $80,000 by the Human Rights Commission for refusing to host the civil union of Todd and Mark Wathen in 2011, according to Christian Today.

When the Wathens contacted the Walders about having their ceremony at the bed and breakfast the Walders explained, "We will never host same-sex civil unions. We will never host same-sex weddings even if they become legal in Illinois. We believe homosexuality is wrong and unnatural based on what the Bible says about it. If this is discrimination, I guess we unfortunately discriminate.”

The Walders have also been ordered to pay $15,000 each to Mark and Todd Wathen, as well as $50,000 in attorney fees, and $1,218.35 in other costs.

Despite the fines, the Walders remain committed to their beliefs.

"In our opinion, neither the state of Illinois nor the U.S. Supreme Court has the authority to tamper with the definition of marriage. God alone created marriage and declared thousands of years ago that it was to be between a man and a woman. Not two men. Not two women," the couple stated.

Although the American Civil Liberties Union welcomed the ruling, the Walders say it shows that religious freedom is restricted in Illinois.

Is it wrong for Christians to participate in April Fools’ Day?

Read what the Encyclopedia Britannica says about April Fools’ Day (also known as All Fools’ Day): “Although it has been observed for centuries in several countries, the origin of the custom is unknown. It resembles other festivals, such as the Hilaria of ancient Rome (March 25) and the Holi festival of India (ending March 31). Its timing seems related to the vernal equinox (March 21), when nature ‘fools’ mankind with sudden changes in the weather.” On April Fools’ Day people are given an excuse to “play the fool.”

April Fools’ Day is rooted in the ancient pagan customs of this world. It is literally a day for fools!

But God is the Author of wisdom, not foolishness. He expects His servants to seek His wisdom (Jms. 1:5), not play the fool.

In Proverbs 24:9, God’s Word says, “The thought [devising] of foolishness is sin.” And sin is the breaking of God’s spiritual laws (I John 3:4; Rom. 7:14). God condemns even foolish talking and jesting (Eph. 5:1-4). Christ stated, “…whosoever shall say, You fool, shall be in danger of hell fire” (Matt. 5:22).

Christ also condemned engaging in foolishness: “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within and defile the man” (Mark 7:21-23).

Also, God commands His people to “Learn not the way of the heathen…For the customs of the people are vain [futile]” (Jer. 10:2-3). He also commands, “Wherefore come out from among them, and be you separate” (II Cor. 6:17).

Foolishness is sin. Christians must not engage in it. They must separate themselves from the pagan customs, practices and traditions of this world—including April Fools’ Day.

Michigan Town Supervisor under Fire for Posting Prayer for Brussels
A town supervisor is receiving criticism for posting a Bible verse and a prayer on his Facebook account after the terrorist attacks in Brussels.

Christian Today reports that Rick Stathakis, a town supervisor from Shelby Township in Michigan, posted Bible verses followed by a prayer to his Facebook in support of the people in Belgium suffering from last week’s terrorist attacks which took the lives of 33 people and injured 96 others.

Stathakis posted Psalm 46:1-2 which says: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the Earth gives way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea…”

Stathakis also posted this prayer: “Mighty God, Shine your radiance into every corner of this dark and fallen world. Send your angel armies into Brussels, and heal the land,” Stathakis wrote. “Hear the prayers of those who call to you, calm them with Your peace, and soothe the souls of those who lost loved ones in this attack. Amen.”

Soon after posting these words, Stathakis began receiving criticism from those who said he was violating the Constitution by making a faith-related post as a town supervisor.

“As a government official, it is unconstitutional for you to use your official position to promote the establishment of faith. It violates the most basic legal principles of the United States of America. In addition to being unconstitutional, it is highly offensive to your constituents. Please remove all religious references from government materials and keep your faith to yourself,” said commenter Rafael Saakyan, as quoted by Christian News.

Although some criticized Stathakis, others praised his comments.

“May God bless you for your boldness in acknowledging that God is our only refuge and hope in this fallen and sin-cursed world. Keep praying, Rick, and stay true to your convictions,” commenter Rick Willms said.

For his part, Stathakis said he will continue to stand up for his faith.

“I’m very shocked by all the attention I’m receiving. I’m encouraged by the support. I’m getting hundreds of people writing into me, emails and different posts,” he said.

“It’s not about me, it’s about the people in Brussels,” he added. “It was just a simple prayer asking God to be at their side, and all of a sudden now it’s become pointed at me.”
