Health › Injectable Polio Vaccine Launched by uanda(op): 2:28pm On Jan 08, 2016
The government launched on Monday an injectable polio vaccine – Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) – which will be administered in addition to oral polio drops in the routine immunisation programme.

It will be an important step in the Polio Endgame Strategy, the government said.

Ongoing battle

Launching the vaccine here, Health Minister JP Nadda said that though India was certified polio-free on March 27, 2014, the battle against the disease was not over yet.

“The virus is still active in neighbouring Pakistan and Afghanistan. So the risk of re-emergence of the disease remains,” he added.

Nadda said that in the first phase, the vaccine would be introduced in six States — Assam, Gujarat, Punjab, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

“IPV injection will be given to children aged below one year along with the third dose of the oral polio vaccine (OPV) at the routine immunisation sessions free of cost,” he said, adding that new evidences clearly show that IPV and OPV together provide double protection against polio.

‘Mission Indradhanush’

The Health Minister said that apart from introduction of new vaccines, such as Pentavalent and IPV, the government was ensuring that every child in the country was benefitted by ‘Mission Indradhanush’, which had identified focus districts across the country.

Louis-Georges Arsenault, Unicef Representative for India, commended the strengthening of India’s immunisation programme by introduction of IPV and termed this as a “monumental step”.

Health › UNICEF In Fight To End Child Malnutrition by uanda(op): 11:55am On Dec 01, 2015
Trailblazing pop star Pink saw firsthand severely malnourished children during a recent visit to Haiti as a part of a UNICEF program to provide therapeutic food packets to children in need.

The singer, whose given name is Alecia Moore, was named a UNICEF ambassador Monday to help promote a new effort to encourage physical activity in young children in the United States and at the same time raise money for nutritional, vitamin-rich peanut paste to be delivered to malnourished children all over the world.

“I got to watch mommas learning how to feed it to their kids,” Moore said during a phone interview from California. “And within a week, you can see the difference in these children. It brings them back to life. It’s amazing.”

Moore is the national spokeswoman for the UNICEF Kid Power Band, which is a child-friendly fitness band that encourages exercise through an interactive app. Kids can earn points by doing things like taking 12,000 steps a day or completing a goal. As the children earn points, UNICEF’s partners, including Target, Disney and Star Wars: Force for Change, will provide the funds needed to send the food packets to places like Haiti.

Moore, who has a 4-year-old daughter with her husband, Carey Hart, said the trip to Haiti strengthened her passion for UNICEF’s project. She visited Port-au-Prince this summer, where she saw children who came back from the brink of starvation because of these food packets.

“When you get to see it with your own eyes and you see that something works, then it’s a lot easier to get behind and advocate for it and try to make other people aware of it,” she said.

The Kid Power app also teaches children about the countries and cultures they are helping and they can unlock special videos and messages and track their progress online.

“They found a brilliant way, and a fun way, to get kids here involved and empowered and motivated,” Moore said. “And they are also turning them into global citizens and they get to be hands-on.”

The Grammy-winning singer is a natural role model for a program that encourages physical activity and exercise. Her concerts are full of high-energy choreography, including flying through the air on wires over the crowds or spinning from large silk ribbons like a Cirque du Soleil dancer.

In fact, her daughter, Willow, is already following in mom’s footsteps. At home, her daughter plays with a smaller, kid-sized version of the silk fabric that she uses to spin around on during concerts.

“I put a silk in her room, so she is spinning nine times out of 10,” Moore said. “It’s kind of amazing.”

The singer was to join her trainer Jeanette Jenkins at an elementary school in New York City on Monday to test out the bands with children in grades three through five. She said that she plans to get one for everyone in her family so they can start earning points and raising funds for UNICEF.

“Between Carey, myself and Willow, it’s going to get a little competitive,” she said laughing.

Health › Male Or Female Brains by uanda(op): 7:56am On Dec 01, 2015
Are the brains of men and women truly different? Not if you look at the overall structure, a new study says.

While specific parts show sex differences, an individual brain only rarely has all “male” traits or all “female” traits, researchers report.

It’s more likely to be a mixed bag: some things are more common in women, some more common in men, and some are common in both.

That argues against the idea that brains can be neatly divided into two sex-based categories, Daphna Joel of Tel-Aviv University and co-authors conclude.

They published their work in a paper released Monday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

They used MRI scans of more than 1,400 brains, focusing on anatomy rather than how brains work. They scored variable traits like tissue thickness or volume in different parts of the brain. They focused on traits that showed the biggest sex differences, dividing the scores into a predominantly male zone, a predominantly female zone, and an intermediate range.

The key question: How often did a brain end up in just one of those three? Such consistency turned out to be unusual, generally found in 6 per cent or less of brains across analyses of several sets of data. It was much more common for an individual to score in both the male and female zones than to show a lineup that indicated only one sex or the other.

The researchers also used a similar approach to analyse psychological and behavioural scores from two prior studies that covered more than 5,000 participants, and again got similar results.

Overall, the results show “human brains do not belong to one of two distinct categories,” male and female, the researchers concluded.

Larry Cahill, a neuroscientist at the University of California, Irvine, who didn’t participate in the new study, said he agreed that brains contain varying mixtures of male and female anatomical traits. But that doesn’t rule out differences in how the brains of the two sexes work, he said.

There's “a mountain of evidence proving the importance of sex influences at all levels of mammalian brain function,” he said.

That work shows how much sex must matter, “even when we are not clear exactly how,” he said in an email.
