Adolf Hitler personally ordered the daring rescue of deposed Italian dictator Benito Mussolini in 1943. The mission, codenamed Operation Oak (Unternehmen Eiche), successfully freed Mussolini from his mountain-top prison without a single shot being fired by the German commandos.The Rescue (September 12, 1943)

The Location: Mussolini was held at the Campo Imperatore Hotel atop the Gran Sasso massif in the Apennine Mountains of central Italy.The Operation: German paratroopers and Waffen-SS commandos, led by Major Harald Mors and SS Hauptsturmführer Otto Skorzeny, crash-landed a fleet of gliders directly onto the steep mountain slopes outside the hotel.

The Outcome: Caught completely off guard by the silent, rapid airborne assault, the Italian guards surrendered immediately. Mussolini was safely extracted via a small Fieseler Fi 156 Storch liaison aircraft and flown to meet Hitler.

Hitler ordered the rescue to maintain the Rome-Berlin Axis, ensure the loyalty of Italian fascists, and gain a massive propaganda victory.
