On 7th of January 2016 I woke around 1 am, as I laid down waiting to sleep again I started having many thoughts and finally decided to go and update my bio metric data on my MTN sim card. (This people don disturb me tire and I come reason the 5000 airtime wey I go receive.) Finally I was able to fall asleep around 2:30 am but not without setting my alarm to ring at 5am I slept off. 5 am my alarm rang and I woke up, brush my teeth, boiled water for bathing, polished my shoe, I was lucky there was light. 6 am I was through with my preparations armed with my voter’s card and my power bank I was ready to go. I walked few meters to the main road where I waited for a bus that would take me to the nearest MTN outlet at Nkpor near Onitsha Anambra state, after standing for fifteen minutes I was able to get a bus that took me there about ten kilometers away from my house. When I got there around 6:30 am, to my greatest surprise I met some people there already writing down names on a peace of paper I joined the line waiting for my turn, I wrote down my name and phone number with 133 as my attendees number and I stood aside taking pictures of people and environment in a coded way to avoid detection. (if this people find out that I de snap them photo no be small beating I go receive ) 7 am the gate was thrown open, people who have form a crowd were rushing in taking sit that was orderly and carefully positioned inside the premises. By then I have made few friends mainly married men, young guys and few ladies while discussing in groups, I began to notice that the VIPs were being attended to before the official commencement of the registration for the day. One hour later the manager came out to address us, he spoke for some minutes giving instructions on how the registration will be conducted, the keynote was that elderly people, disable people, pregnant women and nursing mothers will be giving preference treatment. That was the beginning of our dilemma. The manager soon started calling names from one to thirty, he stopped at number thirty and went inside to attend to others, while we waited outside for our turn, prominent men and women were given free access while those on the line where kept waiting for their turns, 45 minutes later the manager came out and called the nursing mothers, pregnant women, the elderly ones and twenty names to go inside for registration, I noticed that many women formed the habit of giving out thier babies to their friends all in the name of nursing mothers. (every woman don turn nursing mothers trust igbo people I believe some of the women go de rent their babes for a token all na business, I no blame them sha if your number na 500 and around 2 pm number 50 still de outside you go do worst sef, me I even reason hiring crutches to form disable so that I will register early) Around 11 am I became hungry and went to the nearest ATM to withdraw (make hunger no kill man pikin) on my way out I snap some shots even inside the bank premises, from there to a local eatery where I ate and came back as quick as possible when I came back the crowd were restless, (gathering of mad people ndi ara) some where quarrelling with the manager, while some made attempts to push their way inside, around 6:30 pm my name and number was called out I walked inside smiling that finally I will do this and go home after a stressful day, how wrong was I as the crowd forced their way in disrupting the registration of those of us already inside. (village people handwork) All the manager’s effort to drive away the restless crowd was fruitless as the crowd refused to leave, he ordered his workers to shut down their system and ordered his security to drive everybody away. With a broken heart I left the premises after standing behind for thirty minutes. What pained me most is that the late comers were happy. ( bad belle people) saying it is better that way that instead of them not being registered everybody should go home. I called my friend who lives with his parents the next street that I will sleep over at his place and also informed my parents of my decision. Friday 8th I woke around 4:45 am together with my guy we left his place. To our greatest surprise we were number 105 and 106 respectively around 5am we arrived there. (some people no de sleep sef) We wrote our names and numbers and went home to rest before coming back around 9 am to wait endlessly till 4 pm when I finally registered and went home. my guy man take style toast babes there lucky him Five things I learned 1: From my experience I understood that the married men and women were the worst set of people to manage and control, the show of shame by these set of people were pathetic because they were the main cause of crowd disputes. 2: MTN can frustrate the living day light out of people through the unending demands for SIM registrations, many people were complaining of doing their registrations more than three times since last year. 3: Human beings can only be handled with force that is the only way they can conduct themselves in public 4: I felt pity for the manager because he and his mediocre security were easily overwhelmed by the crowd, he comes in the morning and goes home around 11 pm everyday. 5: As you reason say you too de come early somebody is always ahead, imagine people coming to the premises around 3 am Thank God I de rock my 5000 airtime now my stress, my sweat. A government elected by the electorates to lead them should be accountable and human friendly for the benefit of the masses. Government can not be everywhere or know all the corners of the state it governs which is why reaching out to the masses through means like media chat and internet is very important. I remember during the former governor of Anambra state Dr Chris Nwabueze Ngige tenure as the governor he have a media chat programme aired by the state television station Anambra Broadcasting Station (ABS) every first Saturday of the month, where he interact with the public on numerous issues bothering the state. I always look forward to it because I love watching the governor address many issues raised by people who calls and the appreciation of the previous callers on how he solved the problem in their locality. Since he was sacked by the supreme court, the media chat died a natural death in the state. No means of reaching the governor except if by grace a prominent politician decides to inform the authority about his people’s plight. We need a return of the media chat where the public can be able to interact with the governor either in expression of the delight or displeasure of his performance and also to draw government attention to the areas that need government intervention. The public can also be able to report any contractor who abandon or is doing unsatisfactory work to the governor for appropriate action to be taken. Internet is another means especially in this computer age where people can communicate with the government through government owned website and email address. The advantages are numerous 1: The governor will know the performance rating through the satisfaction report by the people 2: People will be able to lay their complaints to the governor for appropriate actions to be taken. 3: Fraudulent activities going on in some ministries can be leaked to the governor anonymously through the internet. 4: The governor through this means will update the people about his policy concerning the state. 5: It brings the government closer to the people. The insensitivity of many governors in Nigeria and the corruption going on in many states is enough reason for the return of the media chat. Many state governors quote false figures spent on ghost projects and white elephant projects which the people can not verify hereby giving them the opportunity to loot the state treasury dry. With the freedom of information bill passed by Goodluck Jonathan administration the people must demand to know the day to day activities of the government, questions must be asked and the government will be forced to provide them. With this, corruption at the state level will reduce drastically. The media chat of Buhari provided many insights about his government policies lined up, he addressed many issues like the Subsidy, Biafra, Corruption fight, Proposed Budget and many more. It gives hope to the people who believe in his administration then I see no reason why the state governors will not adopt the idea if they want to convince us they have the interest of the masses at heart. If we can force our state governors to adopt the media chat idea it will go a long way in reducing corruption and increase accountability. Your criticism is allowed so is your corrections and opinions. Written by Uche Osefoh http://ucheosefoh..com.ng/2016/01/the-need-for-media-chat-with-governors.html
