New York University has announced that it will cover the cost of tuition for past and present students, regardless of merit or financial need.This covers international students and makes NYU the only top ranked US medical US medical school to offer free tuition for all students. Rightfully so, the university cited concerns on the overwhelming financial debt facing graduates which could lead aspiring doctors to choose more lucrative specialties, rather than general roles, or even put them off studying medicine altogether.

NYU’s initiative will start off immediately , affecting 443 students and will cover tuition fees of $55,000 per year, however the catch is that international students will be expected to cover expenses for their room,board, fees and other expenses which would come down to around $27,000 per year. This scheme was made possible thanks to the generous $100 million donation from Kenneth Langone.

Applying to Universities in Bulgaria

You should apply directly to your chosen Bulgarian university. Most Bulgarian universities stipulate international applicants to provide copies of relevant documents, which would include a diploma or certificate proving successful completion of the previous stage of education, a medical certificate, a valid passport or ID, and an English language test result (if studying in English).

Some universities on the other hand may ask you to sit an exam to test your Bulgarian or English language skills (depending on the language you intend to study in).Note that If you fail this exam, you may have the option to enroll in a year-long preparatory course studying either Bulgarian or English.

The deadline for applying to universities in Bulgaria is around 30 September in the year before the course commences for English-taught courses, or 15 September for courses taught in Bulgarian. However, this may slightly vary from institution to institution

Visas to Study in Bulgaria

Please note that European Union citizens do not need a visa in order to study in Bulgaria. All that is required is a valid passport or ID and you’re good to go! However, if you’re staying longer than three months for your studies, you’ll need to register with the police and present proof of your student status. You’ll then receive a national identity card and temporary residence lasting up to five years.

If you come from a non-EU country, you will need to apply for a Bulgarian student visa (D-type), which you can apply for either online or in person at your nearest Bulgarian embassy.  

The documents you’ll require will depend largely on your nationality, so for full details you should check with your Bulgarian embassy. However, the usual documents needed are:

Acceptance letter from a Bulgarian university
Photocopy of your passport, which should be valid for at least one year after your intended period of study ends
Valid health insurance
Bank document showing that you’ve paid the necessary upfront payment on tuition fees (typically half of an annual fee)
A recent passport-sized color photograph, with a white background
Photocopies of any previous visas you’ve had for travel to Bulgaria, the US or the UK, if applicable.
After you arrive in Bulgaria, you must apply for a residency permit, which costs BGN 500 (~US$285), is valid for one year, and is renewable every year during your studies. An application for a residency permit can only be submitted after you have fully enrolled at university.

How to Apply for Latvian Student Visa

Once a student has successfully enrolled and paid his fees, the university will inform him of what he needs to do next to gain a Latvian student visa and residence permit, and may apply for these on his behalf. Note that citizens of the European Union (EU) do not require a visa to study in Latvia, but will certainly need to obtain a residence permit within three months of arrival, which in most cases will be applied for by your university. University Application Process

Note that applications are submitted directly to each university, with requirements and deadlines varying between institutions.

Fortunately, public universities do not charge international students tuition fees, but there is a ‘registration fee’. However, to study on free tuition in Iceland you will have to study in the icelandic language. Note that this fee varies between universities, but for example the University of Iceland currently charges ISK60,000 (about US$470) per year. Private universities charge both tuition and registration fees, which vary depending on the course and institution. Fees are usually higher for students from outside the EU.

The University of Iceland advises students to allow about ISK125,540 (US$980) per month to cover accommodation and other living expenses.

Cuba houses one of the best medical schools in the world. The country has the lowest doctor-patient ratio in the world and sends its doctors all around the world to countries that are medically underserved. On top of that they provide free tuition medical programs to students from all over the world at their largest medical school ELAM, located 22 miles (35km) west of Havana. ELAM is The Latin American Medical School which was conceived by former President Fidel Castro following Hurricanes George and Mitch, which devastated parts of Central America and the Caribbean in 1998.

Please note that students at ELAM spend up to a year learning Spanish, Cuban history and culture, and then dive deep into a curriculum that is focused on preventative health.

Admission requirements

Students interested in applying must be:

-       Between 18 and 25 years of age when they apply

-       High school graduates or hold a bachelor's (BS or BA) degree from their country of origin

-       Without a criminal record and free from substance abuse or addiction

-       From a low-income or underserved communities

-       Willing to abide by ELAM rules and regulations

-       Able to pass admission test
