It also happened in 1999 when Obasanjo became President despite not being the choice of the SW. It was in 2003 that Obasanjo won the SW over after endearing himself to their heart. So in essence, your people mustn't like you before you assume leadership on their behalf.
If Rochas or Amaechi for instance is picked by the APC, their support base in the north, MB and SW can vote them as President. At the end, it becomes a t win for the APC and for the Igbo people.
