The five-month-old face-off between the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, over non-implementation of the 2009 agreement assumed a dramatic dimension yesterday, as the government vowed to sack any lecturer who fails to return to class within seven days.

The government has, therefore, directed all vice-chancellors of federal universities that are currently on strike to immediately re-open for academic and allied activities.The striking lecturers on their part, declared the directive by the Federal Government a joke, saying they will never be intimidated into calling off the strike.

Supervising Minister of Education, Mr Nyesom Wike who briefed journalists in Abuja yesterday on the strike said it was rather unfortunate that after a 13-hour meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja on November 4, 2013, the union came up with new conditions before they could call off the strike.

He said it was obvious that the new conditions put forward by ASUU were not in the interest of the nation. One of the conditions was that President Jonathan should facilitate endorsement of resolutions reached with him, which must be signed by a high ranking government official, preferably the Attorney-General of the Federation but not a permanent secretary. ASUU said their representative as well as the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Abdulwahid Omar, would stand as witnesses.

The striking lecturers also wanted the N200 billion agreed upon as 2013 revitalisation fund for public universities to be lodged with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and disbursed to the benefitting universities. They also want the government to pay their salary arrears before resuming academic activities.

There are a number of underwear designs made to eliminate a visible panty line, but one in particular has been making the rounds online for its bizarre and unconventional look. Made by a brand called Babapanty, Invisible Panties are essentially three strategically placed silicone straps connected with what look like white paper clips. Two of the straps go between the legs and cradle a square piece of cloth against the crotch. The brand has launched a Kickstarter to fund the project, with a goal of raising $10,000. According to P.M. News, the police at Idimu, Lagos, western Nigeria have arrested the wife of a pastor, Mrs. Angela Uzoma, for pouring hot water on her sister. She was arraigned before the Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court for injuring the teenager. The 28-year old housewife who is also the women’s leader in her husband’s ministry at Shasha allegedly poured hot water on Chidinma Chukwu, causing her serious injury.

The incident happened at their residence at Ifelodun Street Orisunmbare, Shasha, Lagos State, western Nigeria. We gathered that the pastor’s wife accused the 14-year old Chidinma of selling only few pawpaws on the fateful day. Angela, according to the police investigating officer (IPO), had warned Chidinma to ensure that she did not come back home without selling all the pawpaws packed in her tray for sale that day. Unfortunately, she did not sell everything and Angela became angry, accusing her of being too playful.

The culprit tried to hide the incident by refusing to take her to a hospital. Instead, she arranged with a nurse who was treating her at home. The matter came into the open when a samaritan heard of it and reported to the police at Idimu. Angela was promptly arrested. Narrating what happened, Angela said she did not intentionally pour water on her, adding that she brought her from the village to train her and she was hawking pawpaw to assist the family to feed.
“It is the devil’s work and I regret what happened. I want to settle this matter out of court,” she begged.

Her husband, Pastor Paul Uzoma, described the incident as unfortunate. “When I heard of it, I blamed my wife and told her she went too far,” he said. He, however, said his wife meant well for the girl and that was why she brought her to Lagos to train her. When she was arraigned in court on Tuesday, she pleaded not guilty. The presiding magistrate, Mr. P.E Nwaka granted her bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum. She was ordered to be remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri, Apapa when she couldn’t fulfill the conditions attached to her bail. The matter has been adjourned till 12 December, 2013

A suspect, Pius Edward; his wife, Fausat; and her mother, have been arrested by the Oyo State Police Command in connection with the theft of N13m from Bishop’s Court, an Anglican church in Bodija area of Ibadan. Edward, a security man at the church was said to have broken into an office where the money was kept and made away with it.
It was alleged that he woke his wife the following morning and told her to prepare for a journey with the children. After the theft was reported by one of the reverends in the church, the police were, however, able to trace his movement and nabbed him at Idi-Iroko, Ogun State, where he had gone to buy two cars with part of his loot. He was also said to be planning to relocate his family to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Ndabawa, said Edwards’ in-law’s involvement was attempting to help the family disappear from Nigeria by facilitating the procurement of their travel documents. He said, “On November 9, at about 9am, an accountant attached to Bishop’s Court, Bodija, Ibadan, reported to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad office that on November 8, at 11.55pm, Edward broke into the office and made away with N13m which belongs to the church.

“Investigation revealed that the suspect was hiding in a hotel at Odeda in Ogun State. With the help of immigration office, Ogun State Command, the suspect and his family were assisted in procuring travelling document to Dubai without letting him know that he was being lured out of his hiding place. He was arrested thereafter at Idi-Iroko, Ogun State with two unregistered car he had purchased with part of the money.” Also recovered from him were N656, 000 and $2,300, while Edward said he tore a N7m cheque belonging to the church for fear of being arrested while attempting to cash it.

Edward confessed to the crime while speaking with our correspondent, adding that he only stole N2.5m and that he purchased N1.8m cars from the loot. “I pushed my wife into the crime. My mother in-law was involved because she introduced me to the immigration officer that helped us procure the travelling document,” he said. Fausat said she did not know that her husband had stolen the money. “He threatened to leave me with the children if I did not follow him. “So I followed him. He did not tell me that he stole money from the church,” she said.

Former Golden Eaglets’ defender, Friday Njengo, who had been in intensive care at the National Hospital, Abuja for more than nine months, died today.

Njengo, a regular with the Manu Garba team was involved in an accident with team-mate Adamu Abubakar while traveling from Jalingo to Calabar for the team’s first phase of final camping for the African Championship. The accident occurred on February 3. Njengo sustained head injury in the accident, goalkeeper Adamu Abubakar was luckier and was discharged after a few days.
