How to involve your partner in parenting, household chores Couples, whether young or old need to embrace complimenting each other’s roles in a home As a mother, doing the household chores and parenting roles is exhausting, this is not something you should sign up for. Do not take on all the tasks in a home, learn to share some responsibilities with your partner. When two parents divide the responsibilities in a home, it relieves each partner and enhances the productivity and longevity of both partners. This also reflects on the relationship of both parents with the children............ Read More: https://fabmumng.com/how-to-involve-your-partner-in-parenting-household-chores/

Breastfeeding for six months or longer appears to significantly cut the risk of a woman developing type II diabetes, a 30-year U.S. study said. The Kaiser Permanente research, published in the U.S. journal JAMA Internal Medicine, analysed data from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, a national, multi-centre investigation that originally enrolled about 5,000 adults aged 18 to 30 in 1985 to 1986. This study included 1,238 black and white women who did not have diabetes when they enrolled in CARDIA, or prior to their subsequent pregnancies. Over the next 30 years, each woman had at least one live birth and was routinely screened for diabetes under the CARDIA protocol. Participants also reported lifestyle behaviors such as diet and physical activity and the total amount of time they breastfed their children. It showed that women who breastfed for six months or more across all births had a 47 per cent reduction in their risk of developing type II diabetes compared to those who did not breastfeed at all. In addition, women who breastfed for six months or less, had a 25 per cent reduction in diabetes risk. “We found a very strong association between breastfeeding duration and lower risk of developing diabetes, even after accounting for all possible confounding risk factors,” said lead author Erica Gunderson, senior research scientist with the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research......... There are certain things you should never do when picking a school for your child. When it comes to picking a school for her child, every mother wants the very best. However good these intentions are, sometimes picking a school for your child could lead to decisions or actions that could negatively impact on your child and in a long run. Here are 6 things you should never do when picking a school for your child. Emphasising on brand name alone We know of those ‘annoying’ mothers (possibly our nosy neighbours who are bent on showing off their affluence) who say they want their child to go to this school or that school because it’s “the best” or it’s “number one.” Yes, some of these schools are great and have built up strong brand names for themselves.. But the reality is there is no such thing as the best school. Rather, there is only the best school for your child. In other words, it’s not the best school, but the right school. It is quite understandable the pressure that certain mothers feel in focusing on the brand name of a school. They believe that the “best” school increases their child’s chances of landing that amazing job or being successful later on in life. There is some truth to that, but that’s not the entire picture. Also, these types of schools are by no means a guarantee of future success for your child. The best school for your child will most likely be the school that matches your child’s learning style and interest Judging by outward appearance of the school We mothers can sure be finicky about what we want in the IDEAL school for our child, it ranges from safety I clean and attractive, with all the newest technology. But remember that looks aren’t everything. Some schools might not have the latest and greatest equipment. But they do make up for it in having a well engaged and well-trained teachers who can bring out the best in their students—including those with learning and attention issues. The teachers are the most important element a school has to guarantee. Not asking enough questions It’s helpful to know if a school has a good reputation or gets high marks from other parents. But it is important to know that their children may have different needs than yours does. Taking your child to visit the school could be the trick in making sure it’s a welcoming place. A school’s culture can make a big difference in how accepted your child will feel.It is of high priority to ask the school a lot of questions including how it will support your child academically, emotionally and socially. Don’t forget to take a tour of the school to see the facilities especially how safe or convenient it will be for your child. Not factoring distance A great school is worth a long drive. But the same may not be true for a school that seems only slightly better than the one in your neighborhood. Lengthy rides to and from school might limit the amount of time your child has for homework, ............... Our Fabmum spotlight of the week, is the beautiful Mrs. Cynthia Chimarame-Iwueke. She is a first-time mum whose daughter just turned one. She shares some hard truths and her motherhood experience with the Fabmum team. We are sure that you will learn a thing or two from her . Please read her story below What are some of the things nobody taught you or told you about motherhood? Nobody told me that breastfeeding can be painful sometimes and quite tough. I didn’t know that breastmilk can take more than 2 days or more before coming out and that your baby will have to suck it until it starts flowing . Nobody told me that all babies are not the same. How do create time for your husband as a young first-time mum? Spending quality time with my husband has been really difficult for me because I have no househelp or any relative to stay with my baby. So, sometimes I have to sacrifice going to bed early in order to spend time with my husband. And if we want to go out on dates we go together as a family. But in all, I make good use her my baby’s nap time to do anything I want to do. Written by Luchi Madubuike When it comes to child hair care, it is important to know that it all boils down to the methods we employ to care for their hair and not necessarily the products we use. In this post, we are going to explore 5 Dos and 5 Donts of Child Natural Hair Care. Let’s dive in! Don’t Wash Your Child’s Hair Everyday The reason is that constantly washing a baby’s hair strips it of its natural oils and moisture, leaving it dry, brittle and susceptible to breakage which eventually leads to hair loss. When a baby is born, most of the moisture and oils his/her hair gets, comes from the baby’s scalp through the hair follicles. So excessive exposure to the soap ingredient (sodium laureth sulfate) in baby bath liquids, washes off these natural oils every time you bring it in contact with your baby’s hair. Don’t Comb Your Child’s Hair Everyday I have come to realise that hair loss in babies and children is usually a gradual process that often goes unnoticed as it occurs. One day your child has a full head of hair, another day, it’s all gone in a flash. What went wrong in between? Excessive combing might be another reason why your baby’s hair is damaged, because combing is a mechanical action that causes friction and puts the baby’s fragile curly strands under tension to break and fall off prematurely. You do not need to comb your baby’s soft and tender curls. Till date, I only use my fingers to comb my baby’s hair and her hair is about 10 inches long now, by the way, as the time of writing this book, she was 20 months old. I use a comb when I absolutely have to and it has to be a very big wide toothed comb. Don’t Choose Uncomfortable Hair Styles for Your Child This is a major culprit to why babies lose the beautiful curls they once had at birth and I see a lot of mothers make the mistake of choosing the wrong styles for their babies. Styles such as small puffs with those colourful hair ruffles should be avoided for two reasons. The first is that, your baby’s scalp is far too tender to bear the tension that comes from putting it into those tiny little puffs. Excessive tension on your baby’s scalp results in the damage of the child’s hair follicles (where hair strands grow from) and this leads to poor hair growth. Another reason is that, the ruffles are made with cotton/woolly material that gets some hair strands trapped in them, and this leads to gradual hair loss........... Farida Ladipo-Ajayi founder of The Bookworm Cafe Beautiful Farida Ladipo-Ajayi is the CEO/Founder of The Bookworm Café, a children’s book café that promotes a reading culture. In this interview, this dotting mum-of-two shares her passion to profit story with the Fabmum Team. Please read and be inspired Please tell us about the inspiration behind The Bookworm Cafe? I’ve always been a bookworm. I read anything that was worth reading while I was growing up. I used to nurse dreams of working in a library or bookstore just because I thought that was the kind of job where I would sit down and read all day long. I have since found out that it’s not quite like this though, there’s hardly that much free time when you work with books. Naturally because I love books, I wanted to raise kids who would love books as well. So, when I was pregnant with my first child, I started researching ways to get kids to love books and everything I read pointed towards reading out loud to your children regularly. I started reading to my first son bit by bit from when he was around 3 months. I discovered that I thoroughly enjoyed sharing books with my son. My experience with reading to him exposed to me to techniques for sharing books with children and this gave me the inspiration to start The Bookworm Café. In 2016, I applied for The Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Program and I filled in my idea for a book club/library for children. To my surprise my idea was picked and the mentorship and funding I received from that program actually gave birth to The Bookworm Café. At what point did you realise that it is indeed a profitable business? During the Tony Elumelu Foundation program, we all had to come up with very detailed business plans including financials and experts reviewed these plans. The research I put into developing my business plan gave me an idea already about what the potential for the business could be. You were still in paid employment at some point right? Yes I was in paid employment. I actually just resigned after juggling a 9-5 and a business for close to 9 months. It was quite a stressful 9 months because that meant I got very little sleep, as I had to resume work on my business after my kids had gone to bed at night. I don’t know where the strength came from but it just came and I worked until the early hours of the morning. To be very honest, I can’t say that I miss anything about my 9-5. I love the freedom to spend more time with my kids and especially the freedom to plan my own day. I can have all of my four kids and get back to shape-Mercy Johnson-Okojie Mercy Johnson-Okojie and family’/;;;ll In an exclusive chat with Punch Newspaper, Nollywood actress, Mercy Johnson-Okojie speaks about child spacing, her marriage and career. See excerpts below. On child spacing she says: “I feel that when you haven’t gone through life and you don’t have a bearing in life, that’s when you see certain decisions as unreasonable. Most of these people who make these statements have not even realised what they want to do with their lives yet. I had planned my life right from when I was growing up. I arranged my life the way I wanted it to go. And that is why even when I was at the peak of my career and marriage came, I grabbed it because I know age keeps going and time waits for no one. It means that I can have all of my four kids and then still get back to shape and come back to what I love to do. So I am not going to say things like, ‘I don’t want to have kids yet’ or ‘I am not going to get married and I want to keep acting because the young shall always grow’, you are not going to be number one forever. That is why when it is time for you to do something you do it. Yoruba will always say in their prayers that when the time for a child to talk has come, by the grace of God, she will talk. When it’s time to go to school, he will go to school. That’s what I’m trying to do. I want to define my life in a way my daughter will want to define her own life.” On her career and motherhood, she says, “I think what has got me this far is placing my decisions on a scale of preference. I love what I do, I adore my husband, I adore my kids, so every time I have to make a decision, I pick which is more important, and I start from there. I understand the home front is more important so I manage my home and .................
