The suspects comprising 8 women and 3 men were said to have belonged to a criminal syndicate that specialized in kidnapping and sale of babies across the country notably the States of the South-East, Lagos and Abuja.

Three children whose ages range from 8 months to 4 years were recovered during the operation while scores of other children believed to have been trafficked by the gang are yet to be found.

Among the children were a 2 - year old girl who was reportedly stolen from Lagos sometimes ago and another 4 - year old boy who was allegedly stolen from his parents in Gudaba area of the Federal capital territory. His parents are yet to be traced.
The parents of the 8 month old child are yet to be traced while the 2 years old child whose 4 year old brother is yet to be recovered has been identified by her parents. She was stolen from Okpoko in Anambra State and was recovered in Lagos.

One of the arrested suspects, Rosemary Okafor (30 years old) sold one of her 4 children (New born baby) to one woman simply identified as Madam Pink at the cost of N350, 000. She confessed to have sold the baby to be able to train the other three in school.

CultureOba Of Benin Partners With Naptip Against Human Trafficking by unongu(op): 1:49pm On Feb 18, 2018
PRESS RELEASE

Benin Monarch Partners NAPTIP Against Human Trafficking

The Benin Traditional Institution is to work with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to stem the tide of human trafficking in Edo State and Nigeria in General.

This was the outcome of the advocacy visit of the Director-General of NAPTIP, Dame Julie Okah-Donli to His Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II Ogidigan, Oba of Benin Kingdom, in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The Director-General had led a team of NAPTIP officials to the Royal father to enlist the support of the traditional institution in Edo State and in particular the Benin Kingdom in the fight against human trafficking bearing in mind the endemic nature of the State in human trafficking and the image problem accompanying that status.

She urged the Oba of Benin to join NAPTIP in its renewed efforts at stopping the juju priests in Benin from further administering oaths on victims of human trafficking that are brought to them by criminal elements.

She said, ‘’We are doing our best in sensitising the juju priests against the practice and many have assured us that they will no longer administer oaths on the victims, but as a respected Royal Father in this land whose words are respected, I respectfully implore Your Majesty to use your good offices to talk to these juju priests and the chiefs involved. You may wish to summon all of them and talk to them, and we are ready to join Your Majesty to sensitise them on the effects of their actions on the helpless young people.

‘’Many of the young people that have left may never come back as they are dead and their parents are still hoping that they will come back some day with loads of money, while many have lost their minds as a result of the exploitation they have gone through’’.

She also enjoined the Royal Father to bring the issue of human trafficking to the front burner within the fold of the traditional institutions across the country.
‘’Every victim of human trafficking has come from a community before being a Nigerian and one of the responsibilities of the traditional institution apart from upholding the culture and tradition of the land is to protect and defend the people that they lead’’, she further added.

In his response, the Oba of Benin who commended NAPTIP on its activities over the years declared his commitment to fight the menace, adding that he had done it in the past when he was the Nigerian Ambassador to Italy. He said it was for that reason that he established the Oba of Benin Foundation. The Foundation has Miss Ifueko Aideyan as the FACE OF OBA OF BENIN FOUNDATION.

‘’NAPTIP has been doing a very wonderful work in fighting human trafficking and everyone sees it. I know it is a difficult and challenging work but we are behind you’’, he said.

He however, directed officials of the Foundation and members of his cabinet to work with NAPTIP as partners to fight the scourge in Benin. He also warned perpetrators of the heinous act to stay away from Benin as the trade has brought more sorrow than joy to the people.
While condemning the enslavement of Nigerians in Libya, he disclosed how shocked he was when he heard that many of the victims were able bodied men and women who packed up their businesses, sold all they had to embark on they journey and later became slaves.
‘’If anyone wants to travel, he should travel legally’’, he said

He also frowned at the activities of the native doctors and the juju priests in the trafficking chain but assure that the Palace will call them to order.
‘’We have noted the activities of the native doctors or the juju priests as you call them. We will do our best to discourage them from getting involved in this crime. We will appeal to them. We will talk directly to them to stop what they are doing. We will call them to order and I believe they will listen to us’’, he further added.

While calling for a tripartite arrangement amongst the Federal, States and traditional institutions in the fight against trafficking, he stated that the leadership of Churches should also be called to order as some of their activities encourage human trafficking.

PRESS RELEASE
Youth Migration: NAPTIP Boss Calls for Conducive Environment for Employment Creation
The Provision of a conducive environment for direct foreign investment into Nigeria remains the panacea to the mass unemployment problem in Nigeria.
The Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) Dame Julie Okah-Donli said this in Benin City, the Edo State capital while delivering a lecture at the University of Benin as part of activities marking the 60th birthday ceremony of businessman and philanthropist, Captain (Dr) Idahosa Wells Okunbo.
She was speaking on the topic: Youth Migration, Deportation and Rehabilitation: The Way Forward, under the theme: Youth Migration, Consequences and Current Realities,
Some of the issues she identified as capable of making the environment conducive for foreign direct investments include: development and maintenance of Infrastructure, security, strengthening the Economy and provision of Social Security. She however, stressed that these cannot be left to the federal government alone as the States and Local governments must play their own parts adequately.

She explained that such investments were capable of opening up the Nigerian economy and providing the elusive mass employment for the teeming youths and thereby, discouraging unnecessary migration of Nigerians to other parts of the world in search of greener pastures.

The NAPTIP boss also called for a National orientation and re-orientation programmes across the country to change the psyche of the Nigerian youth who believe that they can only survive by leaving the country to other places.

She said, ‘’there is need for governments at all levels to come up with transformation programs and a National Orientation and Reorientation program that will change people’s attitude to migration. Without this, an attitude crisis will be another major driving force for illegal migration. Something fundamental must be done to control and contain the illegal movement of people out of the countries.

‘’A crucial step forward is to help to re-orient and re-educate the average Nigerian youth to make them realise that they can actualise their potentials and dreams at home and that they are not necessarily poorer than their contemporaries abroad or in the country they migrate to’’.

Dame Okah-Donli while stating that migration was as old as mankind added, that it has however, increased over the years as a result of many factors including: globalisation, shrinking borders and easier means of transportation. She stated that such situations have also created problems for both source and destination countries with the attendant effects on the migrants.

She therefore, advised Nigerian youths not to be desperate to leave the country at all cost as criminal trafficking gangs were lurking all over the place to deceive them and eventually make them personal economic tools abroad.

‘’The grass might seem greener elsewhere, but in reality, it might end up being an illusion. If you must travel, do it legally. Ensure that you have your documents and know your rights in the country you plan to visit. It is also important to note here, that we as individuals, we should think of ways of building our country up to the standard of those we desire to go to’’, she further added.

On the recent evacuation of Nigerians trapped in Libya by the Nigerian Government, Okah-Donli disclosed that from January 2017 when the evacuation comments, 2114 Nigerian have been brought home successfully.

She however, called on public spirited individuals and corporate bodies to assist government Agencies to make the reintegration of the returnees easier.

On tackling the migration problems across the world, the Director-General called for a holistic approach by the countries of origin and their destination counterparts.

Some of the approaches according to her include: strengthening the existing partnerships based on mutual respect; investigation and prosecution of all those involved, including nationals of destination countries; reducing the conditions that make human trafficking attractive in destination countries; deepening exchange of information and intelligence, engaging in full disclosure amongst others.

She however, assured that NAPTIP under her watch will always do that which is right and to ensure that victims of human trafficking in its shelters are properly assisted and eventually reintegrated into society as good citizens that would contribute to national development.

In his remarks, Dr. Idahosa Wells Okunbo commended the University for honouring him with the public lecture and for choosing a topic after his heart for discussion. He also commended the Director-General of NAPTIP for the courage she has exhibited since she came on board and pledged to contribute his quota in the fight against human trafficking and irregular migration as a NAPTIP Ambassador against human trafficking.
