Agriculture / Re: Resources For Organic Farms by Urbangrow: 11:01am On Apr 19, 2016
Hello organic foods. I have been following your thread for quite sometime now and I must say well done and thank you for all the free info. However I have some questions with regards to treating soil before using it for planting especially after I have had issues of plant diseases/ bugs attacking my plants and I had to end up destroying them.
My question doesn't relate to the topic you are currently talking about so I wouldn't want to digress by posting it here, can I contact you to discuss this?

Curiouscity:

Despite the challenges you are facing now, I really love how you structured your pen. You can include sweet potatoes as plants. As @yazz09 suggested, change their feeds often and water them properly. They will bounce back.

Thanks a lot. So far I haven't recorded any mortalities and I am definitely keeping them hydrated.i have covered up the whole pen to ensure the soil in the pen remains moist and they have a dark environment. They r still under strict monitoring!!!
Thanks to everyone who responded to my problem, very much appreciated.

NextHome Brick+Stone | Simplifying Complexities.

We've commenced preliminary ground works on this site and first challenge is how to do things the modern way - the easier way.
One of the main challenges of the project is how to power various equipment on site. How to cut down on operating cost. How to build a self sustaining system with low-maintenance cost.

Challenge 1 | Powering the borehole pump

This problem was solved using a solar panel system and a solar powered water pump which means we can meet our daily requirement for water without the need for an external power source.

Challenge 2 | Powering the site

By going mechanical, the site can absolutely produce 1,000 blocks per day without the need for electricity. However, I decided to factor in a small inverter to provide needed energy for site workers who may want to charge their phones and also provide lighting during late hours.
We are seriously considering the egg laying block machine over other systems. Though we intend to install the Traditional system first.

______
No ongoing operating costs

Yesterday, I took delivery of my 6L per min solar powered pump with an uplift of 30m. After the initial system setup cost, there won't be any other ongoing operating costs. Every single day the sun is shining, we are earning free money from the sun. I already got 2 x 1000 litres tank which is just about 1.2m high to store water in excess of our daily requirement. The sun shines down and water is pumped up from deep underground, saving us a lot from the electricity running bills or generator fuel/maintenance cost.

At the moment, I'm still picking up the pieces.

Hi Brabus,
I was looking to get info on the cost of a solar pump system and found your thread. Went through it and I must say well done, keep up the good work.
Please I would appreciate if you could tell me where you got your solar pump as well as the submersible one from.
You can send me an email to opss2011@yahoo.co.uk
I look forward to your response.
Thank you

@ Urbangrow,
Sorry about your bad experience but I can tell you that all hope is not yet lost.
I noticed some things that are not Ok with ur snail farm, which if corrected will set you on a growth path.
I started my snail farm last year November with just 10 snails, presently I have over 300 snails and I was forced to expand the pens last month.
If you can drop your phone number or other contact, I will get across to you to give you some tips.

Hi Mansionhans, you can send me an email, then I will send my contact details. It's opss2011@yahoo.co.uk. I Look forward to receiving your message.

Hi
please can anyone identify what specie of snails is in the attached picture?
There seems to be a lot of baby snails that have the same shape as the crawling ones on the picture in one my snail pens. I have attached the 3rd picture of the baby snails.

It's really sad to hear that your snail farm is turning down south, but don't worry it will go up north again.
First of all am not the admin of that whatsapp group, it's just some other guy that created it.
That been said, regarding your snails. You have to know that snails are very picky when it comes to food. I mean they easily get bored with one kind of feed, so learn to change what you feed them if possible every other day.
Secondly, the weather is very dry this time around. So I'll advice watering them twice everyday. Early morning and in the evening. Water the whole pen and make sure it touches all the snails.
In you hatchery, water it twice a week to keep the place cool and I do hope you dig a shallow hole to bury the eggs. And place plantain leafs on top of the eggs, so the water won't affect the eggs.
I do look forward to get a positive response once you take these steps.
CHEERS.

Thanks very much for the advice. Will update on any improvement I notice.
Cheers

Thanks for your Questions, the answers to your question depends on who is buying from you. If you plant say 1 plot of Ugu, you can decide to sell 1/2 plot every week...that's what I mean by space.

As for the sacks, I advise you visit any of the Ugu markets across Lagos: Oyingbo, Sabo-Ikorodu, Igando, Egbeda, Ajah, e.t.c anyone near you, you will see how big the sack is and know the cost from them too. Sadly, I don't have any pictures of the sacks.

NOTE: ONLY the buyer of the Ugu can tell you how much(price per quantity) she will be willing to buy, so you have to negotiate well else you will be cheated.

Thanks for the info, very much appreciated.
God bless your hustle.

There are 2 ways to sell ugu leafs, if grown in commercial quantity (1) Join the Ugu sellers association, register and make all due payments. Then supply your Ugu to the market from your farm and sell at retail prices at the market. (2) Contact several market women who sells Ugu and are already association members, they come to you farm and buy either per space or per head of arranged Ugu, tied with a sack bag. .
You can also sell to several family friends or affinity groups at retail prices and/or supply to grocery stores and Food vendors and make even more money.

Thanks for your swift response. How big and how much does a space and a sack go for?
Secondly when you say per head, what do you mean?
If you can, please send pictures to help with visualising what you mean.
Thanks again

Hi Kalusam,
read your thread and I must say well done on the good work and information you share. I will like to know how do you sell your Ugu to your customers i.e how do u bunch them for sale? I am looking to go into Ugu production as I currently do it for personal consumption.
Thank you

Hi Yazz09,
I have read your thread all through and I really appreciate that you are sharing your experience with us here.
Unfortunately it seems there isn't any room on your whattsapp group anymore, as I am a snail farmer. I would have loved to be part of the group. I am currently having issues with my snails.

I started in sept last year with 200 snails bought from a snail farmer and now I have just 163 and I fear I may keep loosing more. They aren't laying eggs either as the last time I saw eggs was last year October where I got about 12 eggs of which none hatched, so maybe I didn't incubate them well.

Their mobility was also good as at last year up until December when harmattan came and since then they just cluster up together and they've been dying every other day. So I don't know if it's because of the weather that I am having these issues. I give them water as I know and have seen that they respond very well when water touches them.

Their pens have cocoyam grown in them as well as some other plant for food and shade and I also give them feed formula but they have been rejecting that recently. They love plantain, pineapple and fruits in general, but it could be expensive having to be feeding them on this every other day as I have to buy from the market.

It's really painful when I see a dead snail in the pen every other day!
I really need your help with getting them back to tiptop shape and start laying eggs and to stop them from dying.

Here are pictures of my snails and their pen.
Your help and any other person's suggestion/advice will help.
