Nigerian cocoa farmers will never forget Year 2023. They cashed out big time, with prices for the dried beans reaching #4500 per kilogram! That is 4.5 million naira per ton! That is still the current price, in Osun State for example.

Theobroma cacao (cacao tree or cocoa tree) is a small (6–12 m (20–39 ft) tall) evergreen tree.

Its seeds, cocoa beans, are used to make chocolate liquor, cocoa solids, cocoa butter and chocolate. Early maturing varieties can start flowering in the third year with few fruits but it takes till about the sixth year to start giving substantial yield. You can recoup a major part of your investment in the first few years by planting plantain as cover plants for the young cocoa trees. Native to the tropics of the Americas, the largest producer of cocoa beans in 2018 was Ivory Coast, at 2.2 million tons.

It's a major export crop in Nigeria and though the price can vary across different months in the year, the demand is always there and there's a huge supply gap.
