The essence of a guard of honour is to give respect/homage to a team which wins a competition before the competition is completed.

So a guard of honour is only practicable and sensible in a league competition not a cup.

How does that apply to club world club or any other cup competition for goodness sake?

La liga teams have won the last 4 champions league and UEFA cup, and I haven't seen any club giving them guard of honour for it. I wonder why Madrid people are trying to change the guard of honour story.
We all know that it is always done in league competitions, whereby if a team has already won the league before it actually ends, then the next team they face would give the guard of honour. The same is done in EPL. The last time any team won la liga before it actually ended was in 2013, by Barcelona and Atletico Madrid gave us the guard of honour.

The GOH Cristiana asked for after the CWC was optional because it was for a different competition -the Club world cup – which Barca did not play. The writer of the above drivel in typical economy of the truth mode failed to mention in his article how Pep as Barca coach REFUSED to accept the GOH from Hospitalet after Barca had won the Club World cup in 2011.
Real accepted the GOH by Barca in 2008 (
