Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow:
Population growth
The human population has grown dramatically this century. In 1990, there were 1.6 billionpeople on earth. By 1950, this figure had grown to 2.7 billion. Demographers estimate that by the end of the century, the earth’s population will be over 6.1 billion.
Demography is the study of the change in size, distribution and character of the human population; and the two most basic factors in demography are the birth rate and the death rate. The former expresses the number of children born per 1000 per year. The latter indicates the number of people who die per 1000 per year. If we consider the earth as a whole, we see that population growth decline is caused by the difference between the number of births and deaths over a given period. There are normally more births than deaths, and this is known as a natural increase in population.
For thousands of years, man lived in a primitive way. Before the recent developments in agriculture, medicine and industry, life was difficult. It was hard to make a kiving from the soil without farming methods, and a few years of bad crops could mean famine and therefore death as It still does today in some parts of the world. Illness as mild and as common as influenza could kill a stone age man weakeaned by hunger; appendicitis (almost without risk today) was always fatal before the ddays of modern surgery, even childbirth was an hazardous process. Under these conditions, the human race needed to reproduce at a high rate just to keep in exixtence. But the size of the population did not chage very rapidly, for without modern medicine, many babies and young children died. So for a long time, the population grew very slowly. And this is still the case today in some parts of the world where the people live without the aid of modern technology.
It was only about two centuries ago which is less than one thousand of man’s ‘exixtence that the population growth pattern changed. New ‘discoveries in medical science had a dramatic effect on the death rate. Fewer children died in infancy, and adults lived longer. At the same time, the birth rate stayed much the same people were still having large families, even though they could expect most of their chikdren to survive. Consequently, the population began to expand rapidly.and in the 20th century, this accelerationin population growth has begun to have severe social and economic problems in many developing countries.

1 a population pattern is;
A a population that grows according to a pattern
B a pattern that shows the growth of population
C a growth of the population pattern
D a population growing in pattern

2 in this context what does ‘dramatically’ mean?
A unexpectedly
B moderately
C averagely
D poorly

3 if the death rate is 12 per 1000, calculate the earth’s natural increase in population for that year,
A 65,000
B 6,500
C 6.5 million
D 65 million

4 developments in agriculture, medicine and industry took place in:
A the stone age
B the jet age
C the computer age
D the industrial revolution
