GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
For Basic Courses, Candidates must have the School Certificate or its equivalent with Five (5) Credits including English Language. Practicing professionals in relevant fields can also apply.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT
The IT department of FRCN Training School provides training and development services through a programme of intensive hands-on-training on computer facilities using state of the art technique and course modules. The department runs three (3) regular courses viz: the Basic IT, Intermediate IT and Advanced IT courses.

1. BASIC INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
The course is designed for new entrants. It offers trainers the basic knowledge of Information Technology. It runs twice every year.

COURSE CONTENT:
Business Development and Finance, Computer Fundamentals, MS-Excel, MS-Power Point, MS-word, Networking/Internet Concept, System Management and Windows Operating Systems.
Duration: Eight (cool weeks.

2. INTERMEDIATE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
This course comes up once in a year. Those qualified for it include holders of either the FRCN Computer Appreciation course certificate or the FRCN Computer Application/Secretariat Administration course certificate or the FRCN Basic IT course certificate or any higher qualification as may be approved by the school.

COURSE CONTENT
Accounting Principles, Adobe PageMaker, Adobe Photoshop, Corel Draw, Networking/Internet Application, Information Technology Concept, MS-Excel and MS-Power Point.
Duration: Seven (7) weeks.

3. ADVANCED INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
It comes up once in a year and is available only to holders of the FRCN Intermediate IT Course Certificate or any higher qualification as may be approved by the school.

COURSE CONTENT
Adobe PageMaker; Adobe Photoshop, Corel Draw, Information Management System MS-Access and MS-Power Point.
Duration: Six (6) weeks.

4. STUDIO MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT
The Department runs courses designed to reach modern skills in digital studio management.

1. BASIC DIGITAL STUDIO MANAGEMENT
This course is designed as an introductory programme for new entrants into the field of Digital Studio Management.

COURSE CONTENT

Operation of studio facilities such as the microphone, the mixing console, audio vault; the modern studio and its main features plus the kinds of programmes the studio Management can handle, at this level.
Duration: Eight (cool weeks.

2 INTERMEDIATE DIGITAL STUDIO MANAGEMENT
A step higher than the Basic. It is designed for those who have completed the Basic Digital studio management course successfully.

COURSE CONTENT
Participants are exposed to more penetrating aspects of acoustics, mass communication and its effects on the electronic media, the different types of microphones and their application to certain productions; comparison of commercial recording studios to the public service broadcast studio.
Duration: Seven (7) weeks.

3. ADVANCED DIGITAL STUDIO MANAGEMENT COURSE
This is an advanced stage in studio management where a critical evaluation of the SM’S job is made. It is an exposure to various programme recordings with special emphasis on complicated ones such as concert, large orchestra, drama (with) props, authentic and various on-the-spot effects), OB recordings and their essentials.

It also emphasizes a broader spectrum of mass communication vis-à-vis the role of studio management.
Duration: Six (6) weeks.

WORKSHOP
This is designed as a forum for taking a look at certain aspects of studio management that are critical to the development not only of the section itself but also the system. Whatever imbalances are discovered in the process are properly redressed. Participants, usually senior members of the section, exchange ideas and notes on the theoretical and practical areas of studio management. Participants are drawn from senior members of studio management in the FRCN and State Radio Stations.
Duration: Two (2) weeks.


THE ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
The Department of Engineering is one of the components of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria Training School. The department offers three Programmes and certificates are awarded at the end of each programme, subject to successful completion of the course.

Broadcast Engineering as a discipline is becoming the cornerstone in modern economics since its products have significantly enhanced the capacity and comfort of human beings, especially since the last half of the twentieth century.

THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROGRAMME INCLUDE:

I Development of a fundamental and thorough understanding of Broadcast Engineering.

II Production of dynamic broadcast Engineering personnel; capable of adaptation and also resourceful in order to cope with the new trends in Technological developments.

1. BASIC BROADCAST ENGINEERING (BBE)
Aim: To provide a basic for understanding the essential principles in Sound and Vision Broadcast Engineering and apply these principles to solving basic practical problems.

To be eligible for admission for this course, candidates must have passed WASCE or NECO Examinations with at least 5 credits in subjects consisting of English, Mathematics, Physics, chemistry, and any other relevant subject at one sitting. The candidate must also possess an Ordinary National Diploma in electrical and Electronics engineering with at least lower credit from an Accredited Institution or a 2 years Diploma programme from a university.
Duration: Eight (cool weeks.

COURSE CONTENT
This involves knowledge in power and Electronics Engineering as applied to Broadcast equipment. The core subjects include: Engineering, Mathematics, AC Theory/Basic Electrical Power Principles, Basic Principles of Communication Engineering, electronic Engineering, Television Engineering Principles, Engineering Practice (Field works), use of English and Information Technology (IT).

2. INTERMEDIATE BROADCAST ENGINEERING (IBE)
Aim: The aim is to further stress the fundamental principles that underline the physical operation, analysis and designs of electronics circuits. The programme is for the following categories of candidates;

i One who had successfully completed the Basic Broadcast engineering (BBE)

ii. Holders of HND/B.Sc. /B.Eng. In Electrical and Electronics Engineering without practical knowledge in Broadcast Engineering.
Duration: Seven (7) weeks.

COURSE CONTENT
The course contents include; Engineering, Mathematics, Transmission lines (Matching Techniques), communication systems, digital circuits and systems, satellite communications maintenance techniques and Information Technology.

ADVANCED BROADCAST ENGINEERING (ABE)
Aim: To provide students with a broad knowledge of the principles of modern broadcasting systems, photo-devices, transmission medium and fabrication of I.C.

Intending Candidates are expected to have successfully completed the intermediate Broadcast Engineering Course. OR Electrical and Electronics graduates with HND/B.Sc / B.Eng. The candidates must have relevant working experiences in Sound/Vision Broadcast Engineering. Candidates with higher degrees in Electrical and Electronics Engineering are also eligible for admission.
Duration: Six (6) weeks.

COURSE CONTENTS
This includes review of photo-devices, treatment of various types of multiplexing techniques, advanced treatment of satellite communications, concept of Digital Audio Broadcasting system, Studio and Transmitter Mechanisms, optic fibre I.C technology, Practical work at Shogunle and Excursion to some media Houses, such as VON, NTA, etc.

GENERAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT
The Department was established to teach subjects that will broaden the knowledge of participants in areas other than their core discipline. The subjects are compulsory for all students at the Basic course Level.

1. BASIC FRENCH
It is designed to sensitize participants on the rudiments of the French Language.

COURSE CONTENT
Simple French greetings; introducing one self, nationality, age, profession as well as name, date, simple numbers 1-20, 30, 40, and time. Basic French courses are recorded on Cassette Tapes and CDs and are available for those who are interested.

2. USE OF ENGLISH
This is to expose participants to basic expressions in English Language.

3. BASIC HAUSA
4. BASIC IGBO
5. BASIC YORUBA

The Basic Nigerian Language subjects are designed to sensitize participants on the rudiments of the various Languages.
6. CULTURE AND SOCIETY
It aims at removing ethnic stereotyping and in its place, encourages the building of bridges of understanding.

7. FRCN MISSION AND VISION
Students are intimated with the Mission and Vision of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria not only to carry them along but to also awaken their desire to imbibe the spirit.

8. GLOBALIZATION AND BROADCASTING: THE CHANGE IMPERATIVE:
It is to awaken the students to realize the need to be aware of the global trend not only
as broadcasters but also as individuals.

9. PUBLIC RELATIONS AND THE BROADCASTER:
Students learn the basic principle needed in their interaction with members of the
public as broadcasters.

General topics are discussed such as; Virtues, ethnics, protocol and cooperation with
Security Agents etc.

JOURNALISM DEPARTMENT
This is a department that runs courses which are designed to raise the professional
standard of journalism. The use of the Internet as a source of news and Online-
Journalism is emphasised in all the courses.

1. BASIC JOURNALISM
It is for new entrants into the profession of journalism.

COURSE CONTENT;
Fundamentals of broadcasting, concept of news, use of perception and perspectives in news reporting, news writing, editing and reporting, communication techniques, interviewing techniques, introduction to media law and ethnics, programme production techniques.
Duration: Eight (cool weeks.

2. INTERMEDIATE JOURNALISM
For reporters and editors.

COURSE CONTENT:
Specialised reporting e.g. political reporting, news gathering, processing and presentation. Introduction to Industrial Relations, application of Media Laws and Ethics as well as conflict reporting.
Duration: Seven (7) weeks.

3. ADVANCED JOURNALISM
Is designed for journalists in management positions in media establishments and allied organisations. It is also for editors in supervisory positions. The Course treats topics such as: X-ray and maintenance of house-styles, handling breaking news scenarios, case studies of media law and ethics, resource planning and management, conflict management in news reporting, beat reporting system, editorial values/news criteria, Creative writing, international news flow and propaganda. The list is endless because as new issues arise they are included.
Duration: Six (6) weeks.

4. MOBILE NEWS CLINIC:
Is a clinical course for fresh reporters/editors as well as for practicing journalists whose professional competence need to be up graded. It is a forum to impart latest professional skills aimed at enhancing techniques in News. The course may be held at any radio station on request.
Duration: One (1) week.

5. NEWS MANAGEMENT ROUNDTABLE
The course is for Directors, Deputy Directors, Assistant Directors and Heads of News of all interested Radio Stations. It is a forum for Brainstorming and current affairs: It is aimed at widening and enriching management skills of News Administrators and making radio news more relevant to the listener and the advertiser with due consideration to the interests, of the owners, of the Stations. It is also aimed at expanding the revenue prospects of radio stations trough Commercial News and News-related packages.
Duration: Five (5) days.

6. CREATIVE WRITING
This is a course designed for new crop of writers for Radio, Television, the print media and the World of literature in general.
Duration: Two (2) weeks.

MARKETING DEPARTMENT
The Department runs courses that could raise the standard of media marketing profession in Nigeria and Africa. Media marketing executives are trained and repositioned to face the modern challenges of broadcast advertising effectively. It is also to enhance the corporate survival of the media industry, through effective and efficient revenue generation. Three courses are offered.

1. BASIC MARKETING
This course is designed for new entrants into media marketing profession who are possibly registered professional members of APCON.

COURSE CONTENTS:
Meaning of Evolution of media marketing, the fundamentals of market information research, introduction to programme planning, commercial operation, introduction to media planning, behavioural aspect of media marketing, introduction to mass communication.
Duration: Eight (cool weeks.


2. INTERMEDIATE MARKETING
This course is designed for those participants who have completed the basic marketing course successfully.


COURSE CONTENT:
Personal selling process, commercial broadcasting, media planning and value delivery, market information research II, Ethical aspect of marketing, behavioural aspect of marketing II.
Duration: Six (6) weeks.

3. ADVANCED MARKETING
This course is designed for those who have completed the intermediate course successfully and may be occupying managerial positions.

COURSE CONTENT:
Personnel selling management, service marketing, on-line marketing, advertising management, credit control and documentation, media marketing environments and social responsibilities, customers service & satisfaction strategies.
Duration: Seven (7) weeks.

PRESENTATION DEPARTMENT
To achieve stated objectives, four (4) regular Courses are organized. These are the Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Presentation Courses as well as the Commentators Course. Eligibility tests are given to freshers for the Basic Course.

BASIC PRESENTATION COURSE
The Course is designed to expose participants to modern trends in professional Radio and TV Presentation as well as provide professional skills in speaking right at all times.

THE CORE COURSE CONTENT INCLUDE:
(a) Introduction to Phonetics
(b) Identifying organs of speech
(c) Usage of Daniel Jones Pronunciation Dictionary
(d) Articulating vowels and consonants sounds.

Reading exercises using relevant radio materials. The use of connected speech features. One-week industrial-Attachment for practical experience.
Duration: Eight (cool weeks.

2. INTERMEDIATE PRESENTATION COURSE
The course is designed to improve the Presentation techniques and vocal expressions of broadcast practitioners.

THE CORE COURSE CONTENT INCLUDE:

(a) Ad-Libing
(b) Compering
(c) Telephone in Broadcasting
(d) Conducting Interviews
(e) Creative Writing (I)
(f) The Art of Book Review
Duration: Seven (7) weeks.


3. ADVANCED PRESENTATION COURSE
The Course is designed for Senior Presentation Officers who have been in the field for at least three (3) years. At the end of the course, the participant is expected to be an all-round broadcaster who is able to supervise others effectively in the use of the spoken word after acquiring more special presentation techniques. Major areas to be covered by the Course include:

(a) Creative Writing (II)
(b) Research efforts at various vocal expressions
(c) Programme Planning
(d) Resource Management
(e) News Psychology, Sourcing, Scripting and Presentation.
Duration: Six (6) weeks.

4. COMMENTATORS COURSE
The course is designed to impart professional skills in the different areas of ceremonial and sports commentaries.

THE COURSE CONTENT INCLUDE:
(a) Tools of the Trade
(b) Types of Outside Broadcast
(c) Covering Preparations
(d) Selective Perception – Myth and Reality
(e) The Language of Reporting
(f) Fieldwork.
Duration: Two (2) weeks,

5. CUSTOMIZED (SPECIAL) COURSES
They are designed to suit the professional corporate specification of any organisation requiring an improvement in both inter-personal and public communication.

This idea of transporting learning to the end users will be extremely beneficial to the organisation because of the number of participants to be involved. Trainers may include not only Presenters, but also Producers, Editors and Studio Managers who all work in harmony at different times in the recording of station’s programmes.

PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT
The production department is the hub of a radio station; therefore FRCN Training Programme for producers anchors its training on certain pillars namely: good imagination, creativity, sound professional knowledge, resourcefulness, an inquiring and analytical mind and command of the working languages. Emphasis is placed on practical work. The training of producers gives adequate expression to the 3-tier programme of courses run for producers:


1. BASIC PRODUCTION COURSE
Is designed for producers and private participants who have never had any formal training in programme production.

COURSE CONTENT:
Various formats used in Radio broadcasting, developing basic programme ideas, writing acceptable scripts for radio. How to produce programme in all available production formats-talk, drama, interviews, magazines documentaries and audience participation programmes.
Duration: Eight (cool weeks.

2. INTERMEDIATE PRODUCTION COURSE
Is intended for officers who have attended the basic production course and have been in the field. The teaching/learning experience is interactive with more practical exercise and projects from both the individual and groups.
Duration: Seven (7) weeks.

3. ADVANCED PRODUCTION COURSE
It is designed for officers not below the rank of Senior Producers or Senior Journalists or those who acquired comparative skills and knowledge at intermediate level. The various class meetings culminate in simulated broadcast, which is the high point of the course. At the end of the course, the participant should be able to write and produce with a high degree of creativity, imagination and professionalism. He should also be able to carry out the profession of broadcasting with a new thinking.
Duration: Six (6) weeks

4. PROGRAMME MANAGEMENT RETREAT
It is an annual workshop for Programme Management Staff of all Radio Stations. It is meant to refresh the minds of programme staff; purge them of conservatism, encourage cross fertilization of ideas and equip them with new technological knowledge and awareness required for modern broadcasting.
Duration: One (1) weeks.
