Clarice Azuatalam, Port-Harcourt 16/09/2010 00:00:00

THOUSANDS of people in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, Wednesday protested the "unfairness" of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the state.

The demonstrators, who carried placards with inscriptions, such as: "EFCC please obey the law"; "EFCC now a political tool"; "EFCC please leave Rivers people alone"; "Farida obey court orders and judgment"; "EFCC the Nigerian Gestapo" marched on the offices of the commission.

The group’s spokesmen, Johnny Bazia and Kingsley Chinda, condemned the arrests of some state officials. They said the EFCC had been restrained by a court injunction.

Chinda said: "We are not against the fight against corruption; what we are against is the style and method."

He urged the agency to vacate the court order before arresting any government official.

The protesters praised the efforts of Governor Rotimi Amaechi.

The agency’s Head of Operations in the Southsouth, Hycient Edozie, hailed the protesters for their peaceful approach. He promised to convey their message to the headquarters in Abuja.

Edozie said if the protesters are not satisfied with the commission they are free to go to the courts.

The protesters also marched on the Government House, where another spokesman, Sam Oge, said the people were not afraid of the EFCC.

Oge enjoined the agency not to allow itself to be used as a political tool to witch-hunt people.

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ken Chikere, said the state has obtained two judgments against the EFCC.

Deputy Governor Tele Ikuru described Amaechi as "a man of the rule of law, who will continue to respect the law because he became governor through the rule of law".

The state has denied any plans to destroy the agency’s offices, as alleged by the EFCC.

Commissioner for Information Ibim Semenitari said: "Not only has the agency taken on the role of distracting the government, it has employed de-marketing tactics to destroy the region’s economy.

"We have not joined issues with the EFCC, but it has become clear to us that what was meant to be a noble institution may have become a tool of oppression, mischief and blackmail in the hands of unpatriotic and diabolical elements.

"The state is open for business. All our activities are transparent for all to see."
SORRY FOR THE MISS UP. THIS IS TODAYS NEWSPAPER AND IF YOU KNOW ANYBODY IN RIVERS STATE ASK HIM IF THERE IS ANY PROTEST IN RIVERS STATE YESTERDAY OR NOT. grin grin

S’South govs won’t betray Jonathan — Amaechi

Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi on Tuesday said South-South governors would not betray President Goodluck Jonathan, by accepting a vice-presidential slot from any candidate.

Amaechi, in an interview with one of our correspondents in Port Harcourt, said that South-South governors had committed themselves to making sure that Jonathan was elected President in 2011.

Amaechi’s colleagues in the South-South are Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta); Senator Liyel Imoke (Cross River); Mr. Timipre Sylva (Bayelsa) and Mr. Adams Oshiomhole (Edo).

The Rivers State governor was reacting to reports in some national newspapers (excluding THE PUNCH) that some South-South governors had entered into a discussion with two Northern presidential aspirants — Gen. Ibrahim Babangida and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar — on the possibility of two governors from the South-South being picked as vice-presidential candidates.

The reports had stated that Babangida and Abubakar were determined to choose their running mates from the zone (South-South) to undermine the ambition of Jonathan, who hails from the zone.

Amaechi, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Blessing Wikina, said, “We are not in discussion with anybody on the issue. All we are doing is to work hard and ensure that President Jonathan wins the presidential election.

”Rule us out of any kind of national politics. Rule us out of the vice-presidential position because we are not part of it and we are not interested in it.

The position of the South-South governors on the need to support President Jonathan is clear and it is binding on all of us.

Insisting that he was not interested in the vice-presidency, Amaechi said that he had a four- year mandate from the people of Rivers State, which he was bent on completing.

The Rivers governor was, however, absent from a pro-Jonathan rally in Port Harcourt, organised by political groups in the Niger Delta on Tuesday.

Also, none of the governor’s aides was at the event, though the Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, said Amaechi had travelled to the United States.

The Bayelsa State Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Mr. Nathan Egba, who also reacted to the reports, said those behind the “latest kite” would not succeed.

“We are resolute in our support for President Jonathan. We are committed to his success at the PDP primaries and the general elections,” he said.

THE PUNCH had learnt on Monday evening that Northern politicians had started searching for a prominent indigene of the South-South that would be made the running mate of a consensus Northern presidential candidate.

The politicians were said to have held two separate meetings in Kaduna, Kaduna State and Minna, Niger State, towards achieving the purpose.

The meetings, according to one of the politicians, were called to decide which of the six states in the South-South would produce the running mate.

Anti-graft agency alleges plot against it by Rivers government

Farida Waziri, chairman, EFCC

While the Rivers State commissioner for information, Ibim Semenitari, on Tuesday, denied an alleged planned protest against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) sponsored by the state government, the people of the state on Wednesday staged a demonstration against the anti-graft agency.

Thousands of delegates from the 23 local government areas in the state, wearing T-shirts with anti-EFCC inscriptions and placards marched from Isaac Boro Park to the EFCC’s Port Harcourt office axis and back to the Government House to express their displeasure over the recent arrest of state government’s officials by the agency.

Some of the inscriptions on the T-shirts and placards borne by the protesters read: ‘EFCC Please Obey the Law’, ‘WE will not be Intimidated, We will defend our state against EFCC’, “EFCC and Farida should Obey the Rule of Law’, EFCC should leave Rivers State alone.” Reacting to the allegation, the information commissioner, Ibim Semenitari said, “We are not aware of any protest against EFCC officials or its zonal office in Port Harcourt. Governor Amaechi is the chief executive officer of Rivers State and will not be involved in what can lead to the breakdown of law and order. If there is a plan by some people to protest, it may be a private initiative.

“It is laughable that anybody or organisation can accuse Rivers government of planning arson or attack on EFCC’s officials. We cannot do that. The Rivers State governor and government are responsible.”

Meanwhile, the recent brawl between the state government and the anti-graft agency started when the commission arrested three local government officials in the state over alleged diversion of N12 billion local government funds about two weeks ago.

EFCC had arrested the three officials when it could not find the five commissioners and three council chairmen said to be directly linked with the allegation, despite combing their ministries and local government areas.

In reaction to the arrest, the state governor, Chibuike Amaechi, while declaring open an information summit held in Port Harcourt on Thursday, September 2, 2010, faulted EFCC’s action, citing an existing court injunction which barred the commission from investigating the state officials.

Rivers Govt shuns Jonathan’s rally in Port Harcourt

By Aniefiok Macauley (Uyo) and Godwin Egba (Port Harcourt)

A rally organised in Port Harcourt on Tuesday to flesh up Goodluck Jonathan’s Presidential ambition was well attended, just that those who did were mainly the opponents of Governor Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State.

Amaechi and all his aides stayed away.

However, another campaign gig in Uyo witnessed both a massive turn out and the adoption of Jonathan by South South leaders.

The attendees in Port Harcourt included members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) whose positions have been re-allocated to others, elected members whose positions are marked for replacement, loyalists of two former Governors, and ethnic opposition groups.

Members of these camps, who may have formed a coalition of about 50 groups in Rivers, took Port Harcourt by storm with a boisterous rally at the Isaac Boro Park.

A source said the boycott by government officials may be connected with the presence at the rally of many of the anti-Amaechi members of the PDP.

“I think their absence was not unexpected given the animosity between the organisers and the Amaechi government,” the source added.

Among the mammoth crowd were Ijaw leader Edwin Clark, former Aviation Minister, Alabo Graham-Douglas, former PDP Governorship candidate, Sergeant Awuse, and National Coordinator of Youths support Groups for Jonathan, Chibudom Nwuche.

They also included former Governor Celestine Omehia; former House of Representatives Deputy Speaker, Austin Okpara; former Senator Cyrus Nunieh; Ijaw activist Ankio Briggs; and former Commissioners.

Clark, who chaired the event, said the aim of the solidarity rally was to expose the lie that Rivers people are undecided in their support for Jonathan’s run.

Graham-Douglas traced the history of the Southern minorities’ political friendship with the North and the region’s economic marginalisation when the pillars of Nigeria’s economy were cocoa, palm oil, and groundnut.

He recalled that God mercifully smiled on the South South when oil was struck in Oloibiri, Bayelsa State in 1956 but regretted that “despite the region’s oil wealth that oiled and continues to oil the national economy, the region and its people have been consigned to political exclusion from national leadership poverty and lack of development.”

He said there has been no government in Nigeria since 1959 without the backing of the minorities, especially from Rivers and Bayelsa.

“Instead of our historical allies to support us this time, they chose to work against it, is this attitude fair?” he wondered.

Awuse insisted that Jonathan has the right to vie for the Villa.

“Jonathan is like a co-pilot in a plane where the pilot suddenly died. Will the co-pilot allow the plane to crash?” he asked.

Awuse urged Nigerians to allow Jonathan to lead the country for the next four years.

Omehia, who drew standing ovation as he rose to speak, implored the people to keep organising solidarity rallies, and all the delegates to cast their votes for Jonathan in the primaries

The crowd defied a heavy rain and water logged ground to demonstrate their support for Jonathan.

The other rally in Uyo Township Stadium drew people from political parties who said they endorsed Jonathan after consultative meetings on his national acceptability.

Clark, who also attended the second rally, reassured that Jonathan will run and that Governor Godswill Akpabio and the entire people of Akwa Ibom support him 100 per cent.

He said the crowd at the event showed that the people of the South South are solidly behind Jonathan, and “when we took the decision about five days ago in Abuja, I told my people that Akwa Ibom State is a fertile ground for us to have the rally.”

Others present at the rally included Vice President Namadi Sambo and Akpabio, who said the Johnathan/Sambo ticket is the best thing to happen to Nigeria as a nation.

Sambo added that Jonathan is fully committed to the transformation of the Niger Delta through the construction of the East-West Road to attract foreign investors. grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

Pro-Jonathan rally flops in Lafia
Monday, 13 September 2010 00:47 Hir Joseph, Lafia
E-mail Print PDF

The first rally meant to garner support for President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2011 presidential race in Nasarawa State was greeted with disappointment at the weekend.

The rally was organised in the state capital, Lafia by one of the many Pro-Jonathan groups, National Democratic Youth Movement for Good Governance (NDYMGG).

The Abuja based NDYMGG, sought audience with Governor Aliyu Akwe Doma by noon on Saturday, according to its programme, but the governor refused to receive the procession.

Chikat Ishaya Lekshak, NDYMGG’s national co-ordinator said his group received the governor’s attitude with shock. “The reason we chose to come to Nasarawa was because Doma was among governors who openly declared support for Jonathan, only for us to be disappointed”, Chikat told newsmen at the parade ground where the procession terminated.

When contacted, Nasarawa State Commissioner for Information, Mamman Alakayi, said the group never wrote to inform Governor Doma of the visit to him during the Sallah celebration when he received several visitors.

According to him, the group didn’t even seek permission to hold any rally in the state capital.

Doubting the authenticity of the group, the commissioner said: “There are over 1000 groups claiming to work for the president. we don’t know which is authentic.”

About two weeks ago, Governor Doma had led a section of leaders of the state including his predecessor, Abdullahi Adamu and the minister of state for information, Labaran Maku, as well as the leadership of the PDP in the state to the Presidency where he promised support for the president’s bid to contest in 2011.

Meanwhile, though the group was not received by Doma, it still went ahead with the scanty procession, singing and dancing along major roads in Lafia, till the rally ended at the parade ground. The visit to Government House was expected to receive the governor’s blessing and kick-start the rally, but the governor’s refusal to meet with the leaders appeared to have slowed down their spirit.

The group’s coordinator also expressed disappointment with the reception accorded the procession in Lafia, saying the rally was greeted rather with posters of General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), another presidential aspirant.

Jonathan’s posters which were pasted on public installations including road signs were superimposed with those of IBB, to the disappointment of the rally.

Dora Akunyili’s Niece Arrested At Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos For Cocaine Smuggling
ureports, New York, 0808 336 8888, Sep 09 2010 05:57am (3 Comments)
Dora Akunyili’s niece arrested at Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos for cocaine smuggling

Embarrassment appears a recurrent visitor to the nuclei family of the image maker of the Jonathan administration, the Federal Minister of Information and Communication in the person of Professor Dorothy Nkem Akunyili. This is following a sobering and highly embarrassing tell-all letter to Dorothy Akunyili by her nephew, Emeka Ezenwanne. [Letter can be viewed by clicking here]

And then last week, August 28, 2010, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) disclosed to ukpakareports.com that a London based Nigerian spinster by the name Okpala Ifeoma Ethel was detected to have concealed narcotics through a body frisk at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport [MMIA] Lagos as her readied to board a flight to London on an Arik flight.

Upon further inquiry by our correspondent, it was found that Ifeoma Ethel Okpala was the daughter of Dorothy Akunyili’s younger sister who is married to the Okpala family in Akpo, Aguata LGA in Anambra State. [The mother is reportedly gravely ill.] It was gathered through the NDLEA that upon her arrest she hid her town of origin in the attempts to mask her blood lineage to the image maker of the Nation, Dora Akunyili. She told her arresting agents during interrogation that she was from Ezinifite in Aguata LGA, Anambra. And so the arresting agents of NDLEA announced publicly that she was an indigene of Ezinifite. This in turn threw the Ezinifite community in London into a confusing shock - particularly because they were certain her roots were not Ezinifite. The president of Ezinifite town in London, Tochukwu Ezeoke and the Igwe of Ezinifite confirmed to ukpakareports.com that she not an indigene of Ezinifite.

She was nabbed with 1.525kg of substance that tested positive for cocaine during screening of passengers on Arik flight to London. She stated her age as 37 year old and works as a support worker [Nurse] in a London mental home.

The arrest was made following the discovery of some of the drugs by female officers during body frisk on her at the central screening area of the international wing. NDLEA checks uncovered that she ingested 20 wraps of the drugs weighing 300 grammes while 54 wraps weighing 1.225kg were packed and worn by her as diaper.

Okpala Ifeoma Ethel, before leaving Nigeria to live in London had worked for Dora Akunyili at NAFDAC. She is a 1997 graduate of Banking and Finance department of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology.

While under observation, she successfully excreted the drugs she ingested. The suspect allegedly smuggled the drug for a fee of 5,000 pounds with which she intend to holiday in the United States.

During interrogation, she regretted her action blaming it on greed. According to her, she earns 2,500 pounds monthly and should have been contented with her legitimate income. “It is difficult to believe that I could be convinced into trafficking drugs. I ingested 30 wraps and vomited 10 so I packed others as a diaper. I am ashamed of myself. I do not know what to tell my friends. I wanted to spend my holiday in the States and also buy some goods for sale in Nigeria. I have disappointed my friends. I hope my parents will find a place in their heart to forgive me” she lamented.

NDLEA Airport commander, Alhaji Hamza Umar described her action as shameful. “Drug trafficking is a shameful act. It is a criminal offence and those caught are ashamed. First, she has lost some of her rights and in addition, she will be prosecuted” Hamza stated. The commander also commended female officers of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) for their cooperation towards the successful arrest.

Investigation revealed that she came into the country for a religious meeting at one of the Pentecostal churches. According to her, the devil lured her into the criminal act through lust for materialism. When she agreed to smuggle the drugs, her sponsors took the drugs to her hotel room in Lagos. At the hotel, she ingested some of the drugs and packed others on her body before heading for the airport to board her flight.

Chairman/Chief Executive of the Agency, Ahmadu Giade warned prospective drug couriers on the consequences of such criminal acts. “Those that are contemplating drug trafficking for whatever reason should also prepare their minds for arrest and prosecution by NDLEA. We shall continue to do our best and protect the country from the activities of drug barons and major drug traffickers” Giade stressed.

The suspect will soon be charged to court.

One feared killed as youths disrupt Borno PDP rally

One person is feared killed while others, including a police officer were seriously injured following a clash between rival youth groups of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) at the commissioning of the Goodluck Support Group (GSG) state secretariat in Maiduguri on Saturday.

The event was underway with guests such as the host, Senator Mohammed Sanusi Daggash, the National Coordinator of the group, Ahmed Ali Gulak, Senator Mohammed Abba Aji and Former FCT Minister, Engineer Abba Gana, as well as state PDP executives and their supporters already seated when youths armed with dangerous weapons stormed the venue at Sir Kashim Ibrahim Way in Maiduguri to obstruct the commissioning.

Trouble started after Kashim Ibrahim Imam, the former governorship aspirant of the party in 2003 and 2007 was invited to give a speech, but was not allowed to speak and was almost lynched by party youths believed to be loyal to one of the factions but for the quick intervention of the police State Security Services operatives who fired guns and tear gas canisters in the air.

Armed youths used knives, daggers, cutlasses and axes on one another. The man who died was said to have been hit on the head with a huge stone and died shortly after.

Sources said Kashim, who declined comment after the incident, was officially invited and had planned not to attend but was convinced by the party leadership to use the event as a starting point for the internal reform agenda of the party, following the signing of an undertaking by all 17 stakeholders to resolve the internal crisis in the party.

Ambassador Saidu Shettima Pindar, who had already declared his intention to contest the gubernatorial seat in 2011, and acknowledged that there were leadership problems, the major one being with the local government congresses where people were imposed on party followers.

National Coordinator of the Goodluck Support Group, Ahmed Ali Gulak, told newsmen after the commissioning that Goodluck Jonathan’s 2011 presidential bid would serve a unifying purpose. “Even if there are factions in the PDP in Borno State, Goodluck Jonathan has become a unifying factor. All factions, if there were, have agreed to work for Goodluck Jonathan. And that is why everybody in the PDP (the stakeholders) was at the occasion. That is why I said I am satisfied because all the groups were there, well represented and in support for Goodluck Jonathan,” he told newsmen. grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

The students were from tertiary institutions in the state.

Sources said they were heading for the the Police Command, Eleweran, to complain about their skirmishes with "IBB for President" campaigners at Laluibu.

NANS President in Ogun, Mr Adeyemi Azeez, an undergraduate of University of Agriculture (UNAB), Abeokuta, told The Nation in a telephone interview that he suspected the students were attacked because the Ogun NANS challenged the attempt to use the "Gateway State" as campaign ground for Gen. Ibrahim Babangida’s presidential ambition.

It was gathered that NANS members allegedly disrupted the commissionig of IBB’s campaign office at 22, Oke-Ilewo Road.

The students did not only give the pro - IBB a verbal fight at the venue of they also destroyed the canopy, chairs and posters of Babangida.

Olaolufred:

True there are some unresolved killings during OBJ Era.
True there are gross killings during IBB era.
Obasanjo was kicked out with 3rd Term.
He can not dare the presidency any longer.
I think they both should not bother saying they want to rule again.
The unimmaginable thing is that IBB calls 150million people fool.
But IBB did more harm to this nation than any other before and after him.
Leave tribal issues out of it.
IBB is synonymous to Evil.

OBASANJO  SLEPT WITH  GBENGAS  WIFE HIS OWN SON AND THE WAY STELLA OBASANJO DIED VIA ORDINARY PLASTIC SUGERY SMILES LIKE SOMEBODY SACRIFICED HER TO THE DEVIL. THEREFORE HOW COME IBB IS MORE EVIL

goodluck jonathan is a green snake in a green grass. first of all he excluded obj name from the case and now the culprits are not presented. but just two days ago efcc were ransacking states supporting zoning. therefore those that think goodluck will be a good president and is not obj puppet should have a rethink,

Femi Otedola In Multi Billion Naira Scam…, May Be Arrested By EFCC If….

The Securities and  Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Nigerian Stock  Exchange (NSE) yesterday said they are investigating the  allegations of  fraudulent practices the Executive Director, Finance and Information Technology, Mr. Clement Aviomoh, African Petroleum Plc (AP) made against the Chairman of the company, Mr. Femi Otedola.
Aviomoh recently wrote a six-page petition to Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Director-General of Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the President of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), alleging that  AP has lost about N50 billion to the sharp practices of  Otedola.
The Head, Media of the apex regulator of the capital market (SEC), Mr. Lanre Oloyi and his counterpart at NSE, Mr. Soli Oni yesterday confirmed receipt of the petition, saying both organizations are looking into it.

“The Commission has received the petition and  we  are looking into it”, Oloyi said.
On his part, Oni said “On AP, we are aware. We are investigating the matter. As soon as we conclude our investigation, we share make our position known to the public.”

Speaking on earlier  the development in at a press briefing in Lagos yesterday, Aviomoh  insisted that he has facts and data which show that Otedola has been milking AP for  his private gains for the past two years.
“I wrote several memos and petitions about this as the Finance Director of AP to all the directors of AP, the DG of SEC, President of NSE and the police and we have not received response. My lawyer has also written a petition to EFCC on this issue. I am now compelled to come to the public and state the facts so that if anything should happen to me, everyone will know who is responsible and why,” he said.

According to him, AP made a loss of N15 billion in 2009 due to the fact Otedola’s companies started selling products to AP at higher prices than normal, at times higher than the retail pump price at gas station.

Aviomoh said, “In September 2009, I prepared a management account where the company made a  loss of N9.7 billion. The loss was not acceptable to the chairman who brought in others to produce an alternative account that showed a profit of N957 million.

They suggested that we warehouse N15 billion as unreconciled inventories and to seek board approval to amortise it over five years. This was not acceptable to me as Finance Director because the causes of loss making were known. Prior to this, I have suggested that the companies of the chairman refund the N15 billion owed or supply the produces as this the cause of the loss. As a result of this and many  other issues, the chairman was asked to step down as chief executive officer and he did.”

Aviomoh alleged that for daring to challenge chairman’s style of administration, Otedola forced the Managing Director of AP, Mr. Tunde Falasinnu, to resign his office and suspended the Company Secretary, Mrs. Elizabeth Idigbe and himself.

He added that the members of PENGASSAN and NUPENG are already asking for the immediate removal of Otedola as the AP Chairman and the return of the company’s MD.
