Politics / Ijaw Vs Itshekiri Over Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan by vicknesh: 3:47pm On Nov 12, 2010 |
The removal of Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan as governor of Delta State by the Court of Appeal on Tuesday may have split governors of the South-South region.Investigations by our correspondents across the region on Thursday indicated that a number of governors in the region regard the removal as "an assault by the President's Ijaw associates." A highly placed source said, "The Ijaws want everything. The representative of Delta in the President's cabinet is Ijaw, even though the Ijaws in Delta State are in the minority. The representative of Rivers State in the President's cabinet is also Ijaw. "The removal of Uduaghan is an escalation of the larger plot by some Ijaw elements to corner everything." Another source however dismissed the insinuation of blatant Ijaw domination. The source said, "We all protested the election results all over the country. The election that brought Uduaghan to power was a fraud. We must commend the judiciary. What happened in Delta on Tuesday was a victory for all lovers of democracy." But sources opposed to Uduaghan's removal on Thursday spoke of "a thickening Ijaw plot" spearheaded by Godsday Orubebe, the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and Chief Edwin Clark, the Ijaw leader. "These people are going to cause very serious problems for the president. Clark is daily creating new enemies for the president. The unpopularity of the president in the north, for instance, is daily being stoked by people like Clark," one of the sources said. Solomon Funkekeme, Secretary of the Uduaghan Campaign Organisation said there was no fear about the re-run ordered by the court. "As far as we are concerned, the structures we have in place in Delta State and the achievements of the Uduaghan administration in the past 42 months would make the election a walkover," Funkememe said. However, Mr. Sherif Mulade, an aspirant to the Delta State House of Assembly said, " Eight-five percent of Deltans do not want Uduaghan back and all efforts would be mustered to prevent his re-election. Great Ogboru won the election in 2007 and his mandate was stolen by Uduaghan in connivance with INEC." Uduaghan was removed by the Court of Appeal in Benin in a judgment delivered by Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem at about 8pm. The Ijaws occupy four of twenty-five local government areas in Delta State. In Rivers, they have ten of the twenty-three local government areas. They are however the majority in Bayelsa State. Top Ijaw government appointees in Jonathan's cabinet, include, Diezani Allison-Madueke; the Petroleum Affairs Minister; Gen. Andrew Azazi, the National Security Adviser; and Odein Ajumugobia, Foreign Affairs Minister. Others are Godsday Orubebe; the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs; and Timi Alaibe, the Special Assistant to the President on Niger Delta Affairs. Meanwhile, speculation that Uduaghan will not be fielded for the court-ordered re-run governorship election has been dismissed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the National Working Committee of the party said yesterday that he remains it’s candidate for the election. An Appeal Court sitting in Benin, Edo state had on Tuesday nullified the election of Dr. Uduaghan as the governor of Delta state and ordered a re-run within 90 days. The party's NWC rose from a meeting yesterday and declared that in keeping with its tradition that incumbents remain the candidates whenever elections are nullified, that the same rule applies in the Delta state case. The statement issued by the party at the end of their meeting read in part; "The National Working Committee hereby affirms that His Excellency, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan remains the candidate of the PDP for the gubernatorial re - run elections. This is in line with established tradition where duly nominated candidates are presented by the Party in all bye elections. For the avoidance of doubt, the PDP shall not contemplate replacing Dr Uduaghan for the re- run exercise." Some interest groups in the Delta state chapter of the party are canvassing for none retention of Dr. Uduaghan as the party's candidate for the re-run election. Elder statesman Chief Edwin Clark had on Wednesday urged the anti-graft agencies to arrest and prosecute Uduaghan for alleged fraud he committed while in office before his election was nullified. |

: No more war …As GOC Maina bids farewell By Mariam Aleshinloye Agboola, Jos Thursday, October 14, 2010 Photo: Sun News Publishing More Stories on This Section Former General Officer Commanding, GOC, 3 Armoured Division, Nigerian Army, Jos, Plateau State, Major General Saleh Maina, shortly before his transfer, assembled youths of different ethnic and religious backgrounds at the Rwang Pam Stadium to celebrate the return of peace to the state. The celebration, tagged Half Marathon and Cultural Concert, brought together the youths lucky to survive the crises which rampaged the tin city in the past two years. Maina, who doubled as Commander, Special Task Force (STF) on Jos Crisis, has since been redployed to Army Headquarters, Abuja. The youths drawn from secondary schools and local government areas in and around the city were handsomely rewarded for being part of the celebration. Apart from men and officers of the division, men and officers from the other armed forces, and paramilitary also graced the occasion. Plateau State Government was represented by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr. Nankin Bagudu. The day was started at 8,00 am with the marathon race and athletics. Some people living along the roads where the marathon runners had to pass through had began to panic at the army presence along the roads. Even though the soldiers were there to ensure easy passage for the athletes, rumour making waves in town was that some Maitatsine adherents were being moved from Bauchi to the South. At the end of the marathon race, only six ladies could return. The first was Dimetu Buba who won a cash prize of N75, 000. The first runner up was Janet Dungs who got N50, 000 and the second runner up was Rotgat Gyang who got N25, 000. Those in the fourth, fifth and sixth positions went home with N5, 000 each. Among the men, though many of them returned, 15 of them got more than handshake from the organizers. The first to the third positions were rewarded like the women participants while others, up to the 10th position went home with N10, 000. From the 11th to the 15th position also got N5, 000 each. In the 4 x 400 meters race (Female), Students of Mount Olive Secondary School came first; followed by Students of Command Secondary School who came second while the third position was clinched by youths from Jos East local government Area. In the 4 x100 meters (Female), the first position went to police Team, second position went to Plateau State. Sport Council Team, and third position was clinched by students of Abba Memorial College. In the 4 x 400 race, (male), the police team clinched the first position, Command Secondary School, clinched the second position while Jos East youths came third. There was equally a tug of war competition between the GOC’s team and that of the Commissioner of police. At the beginning, the Commissioner of Police’s team looked good to carry the day, but there was a sudden change of fate and the GOC team won. The Plateau State Cultural Troup, using songs and dances from the different ethnic groups in the country, mimicked experiences from the crises and the advantages derived from living together. Maina said he was thrilled by the development in the state and the enthusiasm of the youths in participating in the events. He was full of praises for the MTN, Multilink, UAC Foods, Zuma Steel, NASCO Foods, Plateau Sport Council and more importantly the state government who had supported and made the peace concert possible. He recalled that the task force was at first not well received by the citizens of the state because of the bad publicity it received. Eventually, there was better understanding of the role of the STF and it began to enjoy the cooperation of the people. While thanking God and citizens of the state for the return of peace, recalled that there was a time Plateau children could not go to school, but that has become a thing of the past. The former GOC who was naturally elated that his mission in Jos was a thing of success made everybody at the stadium to stand up and say it aloud that “never again will there be war or bloodshed in Plateau State.” Bagudu who represented Governor Jonah Jang acknowledged the role the STF played in the return of peace to Jos and thanked the members for their efforts. He used the occasion to recall the feat the state accomplished despite her challenges in the sporting area, adding that two of the state’s teams have been promoted to the Premiere League. Souvenirs were given to all those who contributed in making the event memorable especially the likes of Mrs. Salome Bello and Hanatu Dungs. It was a mission accomplished for Maina who came Jos as GOC on January 26, 2009. |

The NPLF, a major coalition seeking power shift to the North, made its position known in a statement in Abuja, signed by a former President of the Senate, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu. Some members of the forum are: Adamu Ciroma, Yahaya Kwande, Lawal Kaita, Mogaji Dambata, Ahmadu Kurfi, Audu Ogbeh and Tanko Yakassai. They asked the international community to call the President to order over his actions that are, in their view, capable of undermining the Constitution and democracy. They also alleged that the President is adopting a do-or-die posture as it was before the 2007 elections. The group accused the President of intolerance of opposing views in his bid to retain power. It said: "Recently he falsified history by declaring openly that zoning in the PDP does not include the Office of President and Vice-President. Section 7.2c of the PDP Constitution states clearly that: "In pursuance of the principle of equity, justice and fairness, the party shall adhere to the policy of rotation and zoning of party and public elective offices and it shall be enforced by the appropriate Executive Committee at all levels." It does not give exception to the offices of the President and Vice-President. "The recent public humiliation of respected political leaders of the Southeast, among whom were a former Vice-President, Senate President, former governors, ministers and highly-respected leaders is symptomatic of dictatorship, which is going out of fashion in other countries of Africa and in the Third World. "Last month, the administration caused the cancellation of a meeting of Northern governors and other political leaders scheduled to take place in Kaduna. Also, last month, we the NPLF were compelled to issue a public statement condemning the selective targeting of governors and state governments perceived to be pro-zoning and opposed to the unbridled ambition of Goodluck Jonathan. "Consistent with this mindset, the wife of the President publicly berated the elected Governor of Rivers State. Despite widespread public outcry and condemnation, no apologies were extended to the governor and people of Rivers State. This precipitated mass protests in Port Harcourt. Jonathan, in a statement by his campaign organisation, rejected the group’s claim. The statement by Director of Media and Publicity of the Goodluck Jonathan/Namadi Sambo Presidential Campaign Organisation, Mr Sully Abu, said "allegations of the involvement of the government of President Jonathan in actions which the Forum claimed were ‘capable of undermining democracy and the country’s Constitution’ have become characteristic. "The allegations were designed to impugn the integrity of the President. In that endeavour, the Forum is bound to fail woefully in the eyes of right-thinking Nigerians. "We wonder what these political leaders want to bequeath to the country, if they insist on fouling the political atmosphere by overheating the polity through tendentious accusations. We call on Nigerians to ignore such tantrums. "Agencies of government do not have to wait for any prompting or directive to perform their statutory functions and no one should cast aspersions on the president in this regard. "Nowhere in the statement is the Forum concerned about the welfare of Nigerians. The focus of the Forum mainly is how to stop President Jonathan from contesting the 2011 presidential election. "In contrast, President Jonathan’s mission is how to transform Nigeria and to touch the lives of the populace in a positive way. "We counsel all politicians to heed the advice of President Jonathan to run issues-based campaign as he will not be intimidated by any manner of underhand and diversionary tactics from the political opposition under any guise. "We seize this opportunity to emphasise that President Jonathan is running on a national, not sectional or zonal platform, and call on his opponents to do the same." |
