Technology Market / Facebook To Prioritize 'high Quality', Trustworthy News, Zuckerberg Says by vicsraelsblog(m): 4:25am On Jan 20, 2018
Facebook will begin to prioritize “trustworthy” news outlets on its stream of social media posts as it works to combat “sensationalism” and “misinformation”, its chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, said on Friday.

The company, which has more than 2 billion monthly users, said it would use surveys to determine rankings on how trustworthy news outlets are.

Zuckerberg outlined the shakeup in a post on Facebook, saying that starting next week the news feed, the company’s centerpiece product, would prioritize “high quality news” over less trusted sources.

“There’s too much sensationalism, misinformation and polarization in the world today,” Zuckerberg wrote.

Social media enables people to spread information faster than ever before, and if we don’t specifically tackle these problems, then we end up amplifying them,” he wrote.

At the same time, Zuckerberg said the amount of news overall on Facebook would shrink to roughly 4% of the content on the news feed from 5% currently.

Facebook has had a stormy relationship with news organizations, especially those with strong political leanings. In 2016, Republican lawmakers expressed concern that Facebook was suppressing news stories of interest to conservative readers.

Last week, Zuckerberg said the company would change the way it filters posts and videos on the news feed to prioritize what friends and family share.

Sports / Coutinho Completes ‘dream’ Barcelona Move by vicsraelsblog(m): 9:10am On Jan 09, 2018
Philippe Coutinho officially completed his “dream” 160-million-euro ($192 million) move from Liverpool to Barcelona on Monday, making him the third most expensive player in history.

Coutinho, 25, signed a five-year contract in a ceremony sitting alongside Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu before posing on the Camp Nou pitch in a Barcelona shirt. “I am very happy to be here. This is a dream come true and I hope to meet everyone’s expectations on the pitch,” Coutinho said.

Minutes before the Brazilian midfielder put pen to paper after a whirlwind few days, the club said a thigh injury would delay his debut until the end of January.

Barca’s swoop for Coutinho is outranked only by Paris Saint-Germain’s stunning world record 222-million-euro signing of Neymar from Barcelona last year, and the Paris club’s capture of French striker Kylian Mbappe in a deal eventually worth 180 million euros.

His arrival will help Barcelona to move on from the humiliation of losing Neymar to Qatar-backed PSG, and his presence alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez will help take the pressure off another of the club’s stars, 33-year-old Andres Iniesta. Bartomeu said the club had secured “one of the stars of world football” and admitted that Liverpool had put up a fight to keep the player. “It was not easy and other clubs expressed an interest in him, but he was determined to come here,” the president said.

Barcelona had made a bid for Coutinho in the summer, but Liverpool stood firm. In the end, the lure of a huge profit on a player they paid just £8.5 million when he joined from Inter Milan in 2013 proved too strong for the English club.

– A good fit –

Coach Ernesto Valverde predicted Coutinho will comfortably fit into his star-studded team. He could now make his debut at home to Alaves on January 28.

Coutinho played with Suarez for 18 months at Liverpool before the Uruguayan made the same move to Spain in 2014. “Everybody knows about his quality. He has been playing at the highest level for years now and that is important,” Suarez said.

“Now we need to make sure he feels at home because we know that changing club is always difficult, but I think he is the type of player who will fit well into the team.” Valverde admitted that it would be a challenge shoehorning his new recruit into a squad already running away with the Spanish league title.

“Coutinho is a player who I think can bring a lot to us,” said Valverde. “He’s an important signing.” “I have seen him play in various positions — on the right, the left, in the middle, on the wings.” The timing of Barca’s move for Coutinho has been questioned because he will not be able to play in the Champions League this season having already played in the competition for Liverpool.

But he is likely to be used to give Iniesta a rest, keeping the veteran midfielder fresh for the Champions League as Barcelona seek to wrest the trophy back from bitter rivals Real Madrid.

Rio-born Coutinho scored 54 goals for Liverpool in all competitions, although he won no silverware during his five-year stay at Anfield and he never made a secret of his desire to move to a club where Brazilians such as Ronaldinho and Romario have shone in the past.

His departure now is a blow to Liverpool as he had just returned to top form after an injury-hit start to the season, scoring seven goals in the last eight games of 2017 to put his side firmly in the Champions League places.

“It is no secret that Philippe has wanted this move to happen since July, when Barcelona first made their interest known,” Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said at the weekend. “Philippe was insistent with me, the owners and even his teammates this was a move he was desperate to make happen.” Liverpool have been tipped to quickly reinvest their windfall from the Coutinho sale. Despite already paying Southampton £75 million for defender Virgil van Dijk, Klopp will be chasing an attacker with Leicester City’s Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez and Monaco mid

Health / Woman Gives Birth To Daughter From Embryo Frozen 24 Years Ago by vicsraelsblog(m): 8:55pm On Dec 20, 2017
A Tennessee woman has just given birth to a baby who was conceived 24 years ago.

Tina and Benjamin Gibson decided to try a frozen embryo transfer after struggling with infertility for years.

"I never thought I would be able to have pregnancy, and to have a baby, such a miracle, such a sweet sweet miracle," Tina said.

At one time the couple had considered traditional adoption but decided to try frozen embryo transfer.

With the hopes of becoming parents, they went through the process at the National Embryo Donation Center in Knoxville, not knowing the embryo they had chosen was frozen for more than two decades.

They used a donated embryo frozen in 1992. That means little Emma Wren was conceived in 1992 but not born until 2017.

It also means Tina, who is just 26 years old, was carrying an embryo conceived just one and a half years after her own birth.

"Just a pure blessing from the Lord, you know, straight from God," Tina said. "I think it's just proof. It's such a God thing, such a miracle I think she was chosen for us. I don't think we chose her, I think she was chosen for us."

Benjamin added, "Yes it's nothing we did at all."
Emma is now the longest-known frozen human embryo to result in a successful birth.

Education / UTME 2018: JAMB Accredits 72 Centres In Lagos by vicsraelsblog(m): 9:15am On Dec 19, 2017
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has accredited 72 centres in Lagos State for the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME.

The State Coordinator of JAMB, Sunday Aladegbaye, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Lagos that 63 centres were accredited for the examination in 2017.

He said the increase indicated that more candidates were likely to participate in 2018 Computer Based UTME.

“Preparations are in top gear for the examination in the state.

“We have accredited 72 centres that have met our requirements for the conduct of the mock and the main examination in 2018.

“But this figure can increase,’’ Mr. Aladegbaye said.

He warned mischief makers to desist from setting up strange centres for registration to defraud innocent Nigerians.

“Experience has shown that some group of persons would create a strange website in the name of JAMB and be registering candidates to defraud them.

“This is misleading just as it is criminal.

“We also wish to reach out to candidates to go to only approved centres for their registrations.

“We (JAMB) will not be accountable for anything that happens to them.’’

The JAMB official said that the board would prosecute any person or group of persons caught operating any illegal or unaccredited registration centre for its examinations.

He said the board was prosecuting a fraudster in court for allegedly registering candidates for the 2017 UTME.

“He operated the centre at a place very close to our Lagos office on Ojora way in Lagos.

“When he was caught, he did not show any remorse for his action.

“We will continue with the case until justice is achieved to serve as a deterrent to others.

“We are a credible organisation and feel strongly that things should be done the right way and with due process.

“It is only logical that any person or persons willing to do business with JAMB, go through the right channel in order not to cause Nigerians pains,’’ he said.

Sports / I Can Do Any Job In World Football - Moyes by vicsraelsblog(m): 7:50am On Dec 19, 2017
David Moyes believes he is capable of managing any club in world football.

The Scot has overseen two wins and a draw in West Ham's last three league games to lead the club away from the Premier League's relegation zone.

Prior to taking over at London Stadium, Moyes could not prevent Sunderland from being relegated to the Championship last season, while he lasted less than a year at both Real Sociedad and Manchester United, where he succeeded managerial great Alex Ferguson.

Despite three failures in a row, Moyes backed himself to be a success at West Ham, who face Arsenal in an EFL Cup quarter-final on Tuesday.

"I have to come here and show I can do it," Moyes said. "If you're any player, you have to come and show what you can do.

"Your reputation doesn't stand for anything. You have to come and try to get up and show you're capable of doing the job.

"I think I'm capable of doing the job at any club in the world, so I'm sure I can do it at West Ham."

Manuel Lanzini will be banned for the EFL Cup tie — unless West Ham successfully appeal — after he was given a two-match suspension for diving in Saturday's Premier League win at Stoke City.

But Moyes defended the Argentine forward against accusations he deceived referee Graham Scott by going to ground under a challenge from Erik Pieters.

"I am a bit surprised because the incident, the referee was 10 yards from the ball, nothing blocking him, it was clear to see the defender goes for the ball and doesn't get it," Moyes told reporters.

"From my point of view, they have gone against the referee if that is the case. I think whoever the panel were, the [television programme] 'Goals On Sunday' panel said it was a definite pen and nothing to talk about. It was a really tough call, very hard call to make, but on the day the ref gave the penalty.

"I find it strange that there are three people on Sunday that all say it was a penalty, yet today we find there are three people who say it is not. I think to be as clear as that, it is very difficult.

"After his performance on Saturday, the only thing I said to him was how well he played. He made the first goal, created the other two, it was a brilliant performance, so there was nothing that we had to say to him after the game.

"Let me be clear, I am the first one who will say 'let's get rid of diving and let's make sure it's not in the game' — so that's why I am annoyed at this one because I don't think anyone can be definitely sure that it was."

Celebrities / Kevin Hart Jokes About New Baby And Pays Tribute To Wife Eniko On snl by vicsraelsblog(m): 10:08am On Dec 18, 2017
Kevin Hart hosted NBC's Saturday Night Live for the third time and paid tribute to his wife Eniko Hart and his kids, including their new baby.

The Jumanji actor and comedian ran some of his comedy material about newborn sonKenzo, the couple's first child together and his third, in his monologue and gave a shout-out to his whole family at the end of the episode, which aired days after he admitted in a radio interview to reports that he cheated on his wife while she was pregnant. He had apologized for his behavior and Eniko accepted his apology.

"I told my wife, I said, 'Babe, I got the best of both worlds. I did it. We married, so technically, those babies are your babies.'

That's what I told her. 'Those are your babies, too,'" Kevin said. "She said, 'I know, but they are old and I want new ones.' I said, 'Well, first of all, don't talk about my kids like they're used cars. Don't do that. OK? These kids run perfectly fine. There's nothing wrong with these kids.'"

"I just had my third baby! I just had baby No. 3. Yes I did. I can admit to everybody that I wasn't, I wasn't excited about having a baby in the beginning," Kevin said in his SNLmonologue. "When we had the idea of having a baby, I wasn't thrilled. I didn't know if I wanted the baby. That's me being honest. Don't judge me. I'm being honest. I didn't know if I wanted the baby. The reason why is because I have got two babies already. My daughter [Heaven] is 12. My son [Hendrix] is 10."

At the end of the episode, while standing on the Rockefeller Center ice rink with the SNLstars—including guest star Scarlett Johansson, standing in front of cast member and boyfriend Colin Jost, Kevin gave his wife and all his kids a shout-out.

"Guys, amazing show," he said. "Heaven, Hendrix, Kenzo, Eniko, I love you! Amazing day. Happy holidays! I'm so happy! Goodnight everybody!"

Religion / SHILOH 2017: Ignorance Reasons Many Christians Are Oppressed – Bishop Oyedepo by vicsraelsblog(m): 11:57pm On Dec 06, 2017
SHILOH: PRESIDENT, Living Faith Church Worldwide, Bishop David Oyedepo on Wednesday urged Christians to invest more in the word of God, the unequalled guarantee for the security of the saints, to enable them overcome the evil ones.

Bishop Oyedepo Speaking at the opening service of the church’s annual Shiloh convention tagged: “New Dawn,” at the church’s international headquarters, Faith Tabernacle Canaan Land, Ota in Ogun State, Oyedepo argued that ignorance is part of the reasons many Christians are oppressed, adding that salvation is a guarantee to a life that is free from all oppressions.

He said: “Many have seen the good hand of God at some time but they are no more seeing it, the reason is because they have disconnected. When you settle with God, He will settle your issues.

It is time to settle with God, no more hit and run Christianity. “It is not the hearing of the Word of God that gives light, it is the entrance, when you are illuminated by the word of God, you dominate your circumstances without stress,” he maintained.

The cleric who posited that hearing the Word of God is not enough, stated that the Word has to be received and believed, before it can deliver in the lives of the hearers. Quoting John 1:5, Oyedepo stated that the moment light of the Word comes in, darkness would disappear, charging Christians to engage in violent declaration for the delivery of their redemptive blessings.

“The dominion of light over darkness is instant and unquestionable. The enemy has no power, he is just a trickster. Deliver yourself by engaging in the Word of God,” he advised. Speaking on the theme of the convention, the cleric said that it was a celebration of a new dawn for participants, noting that by new birth, every believer is engrafted into the household of God and seated far above the wickedness of the enemy.

“God has new things agenda all the time and we are entitled to new things every day, month and year. It is a family where we continue to experience the strange works of God”. The bishop further expressed optimism that there are new agenda in the plans of God for Christians, noting that it is a new season where strange works and acts would not cease among believers.

According to him, the theme of the convention was an inspiration from God and therefore it would deliver in the lives of all participants. Continuing, he said: “This is a celebration of our New Dawn in Christ. By redemption, we are members of the household of God and that has made us to be far above all the works of the enemies,” emphasizing the need for Christians to invest quality time in the word of God to enable them overcome the evil ones.

He stated that having an encounter with the word of God is a guarantee for the security of saints, noting that “the enemy has no power, he is just a trickster. Deliver yourself by engaging in the Word of God”.

Celebrities / 'I Was Angry.' Taylor Swift On What Powered Her Sexual Assault Testimony by vicsraelsblog(m): 11:22pm On Dec 06, 2017
Before the Harvey Weinstein allegations broke, and before #MeToo swept the Internet, Taylor Swift testified in court on Aug. 10 about being assaulted in a room full of people. Swift, who TIME recognized as one of the Silence Breakers who inspired women to speak out about harassment in this year’s Person of the Year issue, granted TIME her first interview since the trial.

In 2013, the singer-songwriter took a photo with a Colorado radio DJ after an interview. During that photo, Swift says, DJ David Mueller reached under her skirt and grabbed her rear end. Swift privately reported the incident to the station at which Mueller worked, and he was fired. Mueller then sued Swift for defamation; she countersued for a symbolic $1—and won.

Swift refused to be bullied on the stand. Her straightforward testimony was lauded by many for its fierceness. When asked why the pictures taken during the assault didn’t show the front of her skirt wrinkled as evidence of any wrongdoing, she said simply, “Because my ass is located at the back of my body.” When asked if she felt guilty about Mueller losing his job, she said, “I’m not going to let you or your client make me feel in any way that this is my fault. Here we are years later, and I’m being blamed for the unfortunate events of his life that are the product of his decisions—not mine.”

Like many of the women interviewed for the 2017 Person of the Year issue, Swift would not accept blame for the abuse she experienced. Her clear-eyed testimony marked one of several major milestones in the conversation around sexual harassment this year. Swift responded to questions about her experience from TIME in writing.

Why was it important for you to come forward about what happened to you?

In 2013, I met a DJ from a prominent country radio station in one of my pre-show meet and greets. When we were posing for the photo, he stuck his hand up my dress and grabbed onto my ass cheek. I squirmed and lurched sideways to get away from him, but he wouldn’t let go. At the time, I was headlining a major arena tour and there were a number of people in the room that saw this plus a photo of it happening. I figured that if he would be brazen enough to assault me under these risky circumstances and high stakes, imagine what he might do to a vulnerable, young artist if given the chance. It was important to report the incident to his radio station because I felt like they needed to know. The radio station conducted its own investigation and fired him. Two years later, he sued me.

How did you feel when you testified?

When I testified, I had already been in court all week and had to watch this man’s attorney bully, badger and harass my team including my mother over inane details and ridiculous minutiae, accusing them, and me, of lying. My mom was so upset after her cross-examination, she was physically too ill to come to court the day I was on the stand. I was angry. In that moment, I decided to forego any courtroom formalities and just answer the questions the way it happened. This man hadn’t considered any formalities when he assaulted me, and his lawyer didn’t hold back on my mom—why should I be polite? I’m told it was the most amount of times the word “ass” has ever been said in Colorado Federal Court.

How have people responded to your story?

People have been largely very supportive of my story since the trial began in August, but before that, I spent two years reading headlines referring to it as “The Taylor Swift Butt Grab Case” with internet trolls making a joke about what happened to me. The details were all skewed, as they often are. Most people thought I was suing him. There was an audible gasp in the courtroom when I was named as the defendant. Once it hit the news that I was in Denver dealing with this, there was an outpouring of support on social media and I have never appreciated it more. I spoke to Kesha on the phone and it really helped to talk to someone who had been through the demoralizing court process.

After this experience, what advice would you give to your fans?

I would tell people who find themselves in this situation that there is a great deal of blame placed on the victims in cases of sexual harassment and assault. You could be blamed for the fact that it happened, for reporting it and blamed for how you reacted. You might be made to feel like you’re overreacting, because society has made this stuff seem so casual. My advice is that you not blame yourself and do not accept the blame others will try to place on you. You should not be blamed for waiting 15 minutes or 15 days or 15 years to report sexual assault or harassment, or for the outcome of what happens to a person after he or she makes the choice to sexually harass or assault you.

Is this a watershed moment for the way we think about sexual assault and harassment in culture?

I think that this moment is important for awareness, for how parents are talking to their children, and how victims are processing their trauma, whether it be new or old. The brave women and men who have come forward this year have all moved the needle in terms of letting people know that this abuse of power shouldn’t be tolerated. Going to court to confront this type of behavior is a lonely and draining experience, even when you win, even when you have the financial ability to defend yourself. Even though awareness is higher than ever about workplace sexual harassment, there are still so many people who feel victimized, afraid and silenced by their abusers and circumstances. When the jury found in my favor, the man who sexually assaulted me was court-ordered to give me a symbolic $1. To this day he has not paid me that dollar, and I think that act of defiance is symbolic in itself.

Sports / Real Madrid 'make Contact With Eden Hazard After Zinedine Zidane Is Given Permis by vicsraelsblog(m): 10:55pm On Dec 06, 2017
Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane and president Florentino Perez have made contact with Eden Hazard.

The Chelsea forward has emerged as a key target for the Santiago Bernabeu club and has delayed signing a new £300,000-a-week deal at Stamford Bridge as he fears it might stop a move.

Spanish outlet Diario Gol has now claimed that manager Zidane has been given permission by his president to sign Hazard.

Zidane himself is a long-standing admirer of the Belgium international and, as Sportsmail reported earlier this week, views him as key to his rebuilding project at Real.

A move for Hazard was put on the backburner due to the stunning form of Spanish youngsters Marco Asensio and Isco towards the end of last year.

But Real have stumbled in La Liga this campaign. They are fourth in the league, well behind leaders Barcelona, and only managed second place in their Champions League group.

And that means Perez is willing to sanction a move for Hazard, especially as Cristiano Ronaldo is now seen as less integral to their future.

Diario therefore has suggested that Zidane made contact with the 26-year-old forward this week after he delayed penning his new contract.

Last month, Hazard admitted it would be a 'dream' to play under Zidane. He said: 'Everyone knows the respect I have for Zidane as a player, but also as a manager. He was my idol.

'I do not know what will happen in my career in the future. However, for sure, to play under Zidane would be a dream.'

However, he insisted: 'I am enjoying life at Chelsea. I still have a lot of things to achieve with them. I am focused on playing for Chelsea

Education / ASUU Condemns Sacking Of 135 Kogi Lecturers By Bello by vicsraelsblog(m): 7:51am On Dec 06, 2017
ASUU condemns sacking of 135 Kogi lecturers by Bello. Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Calabar zone, has condemned the sacking of 135 lecturers of Kogi State University, Ayangba and proscription of the Union (ASUU) by Governor of the state, Alh. Yahaya Bello.

The Union described the action of the governor as an executive recklessness.

A statement released in Calabar on Tuesday and signed by the zonal coordinator of the union, Prof. Nsing Ogar, and seven other chairmen of universities in the zone, lamented the action of the governor as capable of throwing the education system into crisis.

According to the release, the termination of appointment of about 135 lecturers by the governor and the non-payment of workers’ salaries were a reflection of the state failure, appealing to well-meaning people to rein in on the governor.

“We had expected the governor to hearken to the numerous calls from well meaning Nigerians and take the honourable path of maturely engaging the intellectual workers by addressing their legitimate concerns,” the statement noted.

While describing the action of the governor as monumental injustice and scotch-earth tactics, ASUU warned that the situation was capable of creating crisis in a sector which governments all over the world were willing to invest more in.

The union, however, said the Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Lanre Adigun Fagbohun was on a war of attrition with members of the union, saying from the information at its disposal, the Vice Chancellor was out to punish the lecturers.

“The latest in the Vice Chancellor’s onslaught is the purported dismissal of the Chairman, Vice Chairman and their strong members of ASUU LASU on spurious charges,” the statement added.

It recalled that the branch chairman of ASUU in the university, Dr. Isaac Akinloye Oyewumi, was framed up, “for the simple reason that the union is taking a principled position against the excesses of the management of the institution and brazen violation of the rules.”

ASUU, therefore, appealed to prominent Nigerians to intervene in the situation as the education system in the country does not need the crisis it is currently undergoing.
