Politics / Lagos Ranks 6th Best Global City For Nightlife, Ahead Of Rotterdam, Manchester by victorDanladi: 8:01am On Sep 08
Lagos has been ranked the 6th best city in the world for nightlife in 2024, surpassing renowned cities such as Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Manchester in the United Kingdom.

This ranking was published by Time Out, a global magazine operating in 333 cities across 59 countries, and it highlights Lagos’ vibrant and dynamic nightlife scene, largely driven by its globally celebrated Afrobeats culture.

The survey, which gathered feedback from thousands of participants across various cities, evaluated both the quality and affordability of nightlife, with Lagos impressively scoring 80% for the quality of its nightlife offerings
Additionally, the affordability of the city’s diverse nightlife scene stood out, earning a score of 48%, further emphasizing that locals and tourists alike can enjoy Lagos without breaking the bank.

“Lagos earned an 80 per cent quality score for its nightlife scene, and it’s not too expensive to locals either, scoring 48 per cent for affordability,” Time Out noted.
How Lagos stands among global nightlife hubs
Lagos ranked ahead of several well-known nightlife destinations such as Rotterdam, Manchester, Budapest, and Buenos Aires, further establishing itself as a global hub for entertainment.

However, the city trailed behind five other cities that led the rankings: Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Manila in the Philippines, Berlin in Germany, Guadalajara in Mexico, and Austin, Texas in the United States.

These cities have long-standing reputations for their rich nightlife offerings, making Lagos’ achievement even more significant

Time Out Magazine highlighted that what makes Lagos’ nightlife so appealing is its blend of rich cultural history with modern and evolving entertainment options. Afrobeats, a genre rooted in Nigeria, continues to define the city’s music scene and has taken centre stage in clubs and events across the city.

The magazine also noted that Lagos’ nightlife venues, such as Freedom Park and The House on Victoria Island, have become synonymous with exciting events that cater to a wide array of tastes, from Sunday salsa nights and networking events to afro house club nights like Odyssey House.

More insights
Time Out magazine further noted that Lagos’ nightlife is a vibrant fusion of its cultural heritage and modern inclusivity, setting it apart from other global destinations.
The magazine highlighted the city’s recent celebration of Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka’s 90th birthday, which featured cultural events and all-night live music performances at venues like Freedom Park.
These celebrations, according to Time Out, exemplify how Lagos seamlessly blends its rich culture with entertainment, creating a nightlife experience that is both dynamic and meaningful.

SmartyPants:
Fuel is still being subsidized indirectly so the issue is not fuel subsidy but dollar inflation, which has an implication on fuel costs. The argument there is that Nigeria could not afford to defend the dollar the way Emefiele was doing - it was not sustainable.
And what did Peter OBi say on that?

Is September 2022 more recent than January 2023 when it was just 1month to the election he lost to Tinubu, and he made the below vow to remove subsidy immediately?

The day Nigerians decide that they cannot live without fuel subsidy, Peter Obi who believes in subsidy removal on the 1st day in office would not be their choice, so stop trying to force it.

No consumer would deliberately purchase an expired product that Peter Obi represents.
What about this one

What are the almost everything from the FG that Lagos grabbed?
Is it the ONNE PORT?
or PH REFINERY?
or KADUNA REFINERY?
or WARRI REFINEY?
or 13% derivatives from oil?mind you Lagos doesn't get 13% derivatives from revenue from her ports and VATS.
or Nigeria Defence Academy?
Or University of Ibadan?
Or University College hospital?

Mention that thing that belongs to others that Lagos grabbed

MadPolitician:
Since independence, Lagos as the then political and the economic capital of Nigeria has attracted a lot more infrastructural and financial investments, than any other state in Nigeria. This has been a deliberate policy of the Nigerian government overtime. Infact, the federal government fixation on Lagos became so intense that few years after the war, while the government in power then, was busy mouthing off all sorts of patronising rhetorics about building up the war destroyed areas, Gowon was busy building new roads/highways and flyovers all over Lagos, with none anywhere near the war zone. Funds meant for war reconstruction was directed towards projects in Lagos.

Obasanjo would take over and start building the national stadium, the national theatre, industrial zones, FESTAC,etc. Babangida came with the second mainland bridge, the destruction of Maroko which will later transform to a shiny neighbourhood today, followed with the concentration of the headquarters of oil, banks, press and big time construction companies in Lagos. NONE elsewhere. This practice basically led to a situation where almost every big foreign organisation entering Nigeria, quickly sets up office in Lagos, since the bank top executives live there, together with the active ports. As a result the rest of the country lacks the structures needed to thrive, thereby perpetuating poverty and squalid existence elsewhere in the country.

Based on a review of the lending practices of The "federal" Bank of Industries by The National Assembly few months back, it was revealed that most of the banks loans go mainly to businesses in and around Lagos. Understand that this is a bank that was set up to provide quick low interest loans to businesses and start ups across the country, in order to stimulate rapid industrial revolution all over the country. But as these banks lends primarily to Lagos and her environs, places like Lokoja, Jos, Lafiaa, Abakiliki, Gasua, Birnin Kebbi, Yenegoa, Warri etc, are left unattended to. They now become basically places where finishes goods feom Lagos are sold.

No wonder Lagos alone, accounts for over 90% of Nigerias foreign direct investments, while other cities rot. It has become so bad that the presidency, now headed by a former Lagos governor, is building a "unity road" from his Lekki seaport to Calabar, a seaside city whose ports have been rendered comatose by a barrage of the federal governments anti business policies. Calabar sons are now expected to go to Lagos to clear their imported goods while the port in their city lies empty. These type of policies have basically destroyed businesses in the eastern corridor since it costs over a million to transport imported containers from Lagos to the former Eastern Nigeria.

Nigeria is not a city state like Dubai or Singapore, where everything is concentrated in one city/area. Nigeria is a multi city state in the mould of China, Japan, India, Germany etc. Developmental programs should be caliberated in ways that help to induce rapid economic activities across baord. It is absolutely wrong for graduates from Warri, Calabar or Portharcourt, to travel all the way to Lagos to find port related jobs, when their home cities are economically vibrant enough to have very active seaports. Just as China has Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Shandong and other competitively vibrant cities, federal politicians should unleash policies that will allow Lokoja, Kafanchan, Okigwe, Oshogbo and Damaturu to rise.

This Mad dog doesn't know Bayelsa, delta, rivers and akwa ibim allocations tripple that of LAGOS

And there was not time any other state was denied allocationby FG.

Also,Lagos state doesn't receive any special allocation from FG apart from its statutoryallocation. No even 13% derivatives

moreover, you think third mainland bridge and rail transport are what are driving Lagos economy? Don’t other SW states have those? Why didn’t they attract investors like Lagos?
