Chapter 93: Whether to Kneel or Not

“She arrived. Why are you looking for her?” Zhou Jingyun asked.

“Someone is investigating Sister-in-law. That person used a lot of connections. I just got the news,” Zhou Mingfei said quickly.

“Huh? Who is it?” Zhou Jingyun frowned.

“Someone from Six Blessing Corporation. I’ve already asked someone to investigate their identity. We temporarily do not know who from the Xie family is investigating her yet.” Zhou Mingfei asked, “Are you going to tell Sister-in-law about this, or should I call her to let her know about this?”

“I’ll tell her.” After Zhou Jingyun said that, he suddenly remembered something. “Right, what did you say just now? Why did you ask if your sister-in-law had arrived at the company?”

“Ah? Sister-in-law came to my place for a massage this morning. I originally wanted to bring her out for lunch, but she said that you were looking for her, so she went back to the company to look for you.” Zhou Mingfei noticed that Zhou Jingyun’s tone was not right, so he was much more careful when he spoke. “Brother, what’s wrong?”

“No-nothing.” Zhou Jingyun’s tone was a little stunned. This way, Zhou Mingfei’s heart felt even more nervous. He did not know what had happened, so his tone was even more careful.

“It’s nothing. I’ll hang up first.” After saying that, Zhou Jingyun hung up the phone. He held the back of the office desk with his hand facing Jiang Tong. His expression was very interesting. He had a feeling of anger from being teased, but also a complicated feeling of relief. After a moment, he turned his head to look at Jiang Tong. He asked, “You teased me?”

“What do you mean ‘tease’ you?” Jiang Tong pretended to be confused. Zhou Jingyun knew he was being teased from her expression. He said, “You are so annoying.” After saying that, he put his phone on the desk, walked quickly to Jiang Tong, and knelt down with a thud! He knelt down with his knees together!

“I was wrong.” Even though Zhou Jingyun was kneeling, he still straightened his back and looked up at Jiang Tong. He spoke in a dignified tone. This kneeling made him look like a hero.

After kneeling, Zhou Jingyun got up from the ground. As he walked towards the office desk, he muttered, “How could there be such an annoying bet? You haven’t had lunch? Zhou Mingfei just called to say that someone from Six Blessings Corporation is investigating you. Do you know who it is?” His tone was very normal, it was as if he didn’t even kneel to apologize earlier.

“Six Blessings Corporation, the Xie family’s business,” Jiang Tong smiled. Her smile was a little strange. Of course, she knew who was investigating her. Of course, it was Xie Wenkai. Yesterday afternoon, she texted Xie Wenkai while she was on the road. She could imagine the panic Xie Wenkai felt after receiving the text. He probably didn’t sleep well last night. Jiang Tong’s cell phone number was registered under her real name. With the power and connections of the Xie family, they could easily find out everything about her. However, after Xie Wenkai found out her identity and background, whether he would believe the information he dug up about her would be none of her business. After all, with her family background, it was impossible for her to drive a Lamborghini. Xie Wenkai probably used his connections to find out more about Jiang Tong’s background.

“Why, you don’t know about it?” Zhou Jingyun asked in return. Logically speaking, if someone was secretly investigating, it was impossible for the person being investigated to know. However, Zhou Jingyun had a feeling that Jiang Tong knew, because she was an intelligence dealer.

“I know,” Jiang Tong smiled.

“Then who do you think is investigating you?” Zhou Jingyun smiled. Unfortunately, Jiang Tong did not want to say anything. She simply said, “Don’t get involved in this matter.”

“Get involved? I don’t have the time to care about you.” Zhou Jingyun walked to the clothes rack and took off his suit jacket. At the same time, he said, “There’s a new Italian restaurant on Kaiming Street. Do you want to go over and try out their food?”

“Let’s go,” Jiang Tong agreed and stood up.

After Zhou Jingyun put on his jacket, he saw Jiang Tong’s white shirt collar had been flipped. He smoothly adjusted her collar for her. This feeling… was like he had found a boyfriend instead of a girlfriend.

“Did you feel comfortable kneeling to a woman?” Jiang Tong asked Zhou Jingyun with a smile. Her tone was very calm, but it was inexplicably infuriating to him.

Comfortable? Zhou Jingyun’s hand that was fixing Jiang Tong’s collar paused for a second or two. Then, he smiled and said, “Are you deliberately provoking me?” He looked down at Jiang Tong. In fact, Jiang Tong was very tall and slender. In addition to the aura around her, it made people feel that she was even taller, and it made people look up to her.

“Of course not,” Jiang Tong denied with a smile. “I just wanted to interview you. You know that in our line of work, we have to understand people’s hearts. So I especially want to know what you think in your heart even though you don’t seem to care about kneeling down.”

Chapter 11: Chapter 11

As everyone turned their heads they saw the little maid, who had just entered Qing Shan Courtyard. Standing in the crowd with her small figure, she gently spoke, “Even though it’s winter, we are situated near the hot spring that provides much warmth but also mosquitoes and moths. Rattan itself attracts these bugs but burning it emits more warmth and further attracts the birds and mice. They feed on the bugs which then, attracts the snakes which feed on the mice. This is common knowledge and the maids should have thought long and hard about it.”

Zhuge Yue raised his eyebrows with alarm, turned his head and asked with a stern tone, “Who brought these pots of rattan here?”

Jin Cai was frightened and murmured hesitantly, “Sir, these few pots were sent by the Zhu household caretaker yesterday, explaining that they are a speciality of South Xinjiang. He thought that you would like it and specifically requested the maids to place them here.”

“Zhu Shun?” Zhuge Yue pondered for a while, his eyes turned slightly cold and he slowly spoke, “This caretaker has become more brazen. If he buys a dagger and requests to put it on my bed, I bet you will do as instructed.”

Utterly shocked, Jin Cai hurriedly exclaimed, “I would not dare!”

Zhuge Yue did not utter a word and as his servants were about to leave, he suddenly said, “You will serve in the interior from now on.”

The crowd stood still and wondered who he was referring to.

Zhuge Yue frowned impatiently, pointed to Chu Qiao and said, “You.”

Everyone suddenly stared in unison.

Chu Qiao respectfully responded, “I will obey your command.”

After exiting the main Xuan Hall, the servants just threw Jin Zhu, who was covered with blood, into the cart. This weak girl was just handed thirty strokes of the cane and was about to be thrown in An Jun Hall, an insufferable place. How is she going to survive?

Jin Cai felt ominous and shuddered at the sight. Just then, a sweet voice was heard behind her. She turned her head and saw Chu Qiao smiling eye to eye while looking at her, she then sweetly said, “Sister Jin Cai, let’s work together from here on. I am still young and immature, please take good care of me!”

Jin Cai suddenly panicked without understanding why but still tried to maintain a calm expression and replied, “We are all servants and working together… together is a must.”

“Yes.” Chu Qiao smiled and replied, “Then Sister Jin Cai, don’t you think you should forgive Nuan Yu and those children?”

Albeit feeling slightly angry, Jin Cai still nodded her head and said, “Their time here is almost up too, they can leave.”

“I shall thank you for them,” Chu Qiao grinned and walked towards the shivering cold children. She spun around like she suddenly thought of something and said, “If Sister Jin Zhu was as kind as you, Shu Tong and Lin Xi wouldn’t have been beaten alive by the Master. That’s why it pays to be kind. Lin Xi has only been dead for 3 days and it looks like Jin Zhu is going to be dead too. This thought sends a shudder down my spine.”

Jin Cai couldn’t put up a fake front anymore. She turned white with fear and glared intensely at Chu Qiao. Thinking that this small child gives off such an evil aura was frightening.

Chu Qiao edged her way forward and whispered into Jin Cai’s ear, “After committing evil deeds, there is bound to be retribution. If one has yet to be served what they deserve, it’s just that it has yet to come. Don’t you think so?”

Jin Cai was shocked, took a step back and left hurriedly.

Chu Qiao reacted immediately and grabbed onto her shoulder. Jin Cai was appalled and jumped aside, exclaiming, “What do you want?”

Chu Qiao sighed coldly and said without a hint of a smile, “Why are you nervous? I merely wanted to direct you back to that dish of peaches.”

“Peaches?”

“We are both interior servants now and are equal in status. I’ve retrieved the peaches from Nanyuan with much hard work, don’t you think I should be the one to present it?”

Jin Cai was speechless upon hearing that.

Chu Qiao turned and walked towards the flower room. She thought out loud while speaking, “We should all know our place and should not do what we aren’t supposed to do, then can we become great people of our time. Some things can only be said once and some warnings can only be warranted once. Slowly reflect on how you are going to treat people and handle matters correctly the next time.”

After noon, the bright sun’s rays pierced down on the snowy ground.

This was not any ordinary day, because the court of elders decreed the military to be activated. Huang Army immediately set out to commence counter-insurgency. The warlords of the seven divisions were fighting aggressively with each other to take over the helm of the Huang Army. The head of Zhuge Prefecture, Zhuge Mu Qing, was not around, The decision making was assigned to Zhuge Huai.

Also on this day, the fourth prince of Zhuge Prefecture, Zhuge Yue, was hurt by the bite of a poisonous snake. Although he was given immediate medical attention, he still needed time to recuperate. Despite his young age, he was the Huang Army’s Major General, birthed in the hall. He had led men to counter insurgents three times and was highly skilled. In the Zhuge Family, he was the leader apart from Zhuge Huai. The other divisions received information about him promptly from their informants. After Zhuge Huai placed his brother in the leadership position, the rest quickly voiced their opposition.

That afternoon, the imperial doctor entered the Zhuge Prefecture. Zhuge Clan wanted to take over the Huang Army, he had no choice but to abandon his plan of taking over.

This action brought about an overwhelming response. Upon hearing this, the elders of Zhuge Clan all came , taking over the Zhuge Main Residence.

On the same day, because of Zhuge Yue’s injury, the Zhuge Prefecture staged the usual drama and competition. Jin Zhu, the main servant of the Fourth Master who always bullied others, was caned while the two servants of the Qing Shan Courtyard fought each other, resulting in one dead and one injured. Due to the severity of his injuries, he passed away the next day. Zhu household’s main caretaker was given twenty strokes because of a few pots which induced trouble for him. He was still lamenting while recuperating.

At the rear of the mountain, crocodiles were kept in a pavilion on a lake beside the hot spring. Once again, three corpses surfaced silently and were food for the crocodiles, but no one seemed to care.

As the dark, starry night loomed, Chu Qiao received the last bunch of notes and gradually placed it in the rattan pot.

These past few days, Jin Cai was unable to concentrate. Every time she saw the child from the Jing Family, she would feel a chill rising from the bottom of her feet, resulting in a loss of appetite and a feeling like there was a fishbone stuck in her throat.

From early in the morning when the weather was good, the servants cleaned up the snow in the courtyard and carried on with the rest of the day’s work in an orderly manner. While preparing a meal, news came from the Red Hill Court, Master Mu of the South of the Five Ridges, Master Wei, Seventh Royal Highness Zhao, Eighth Royal Highness Zhao Jue, Thirteenth Royal Highness Zhao Song and Emperor Yan were gathered in the glass hall of Red Hill Court. The Eldest Master was already there accompanying them while the Third and Fifth Masters are still making their way there. The Fourth Master was asked to make his way there to join in the crowd if his body had recovered.

Zhuge Yue was more introverted. He did not go on walks frequently with his siblings, but prefered to stay in Qing Shan Courtyard to read or eat on his own. He lacked exuberance and if not for his cruelty, he was known to keep to himself. He received the news while lying on his bed and informed the messenger that he wasn’t feeling too well; hence he wouldn’t be making his way there.

Chu Qiao gently fanned the incense and upon receiving the information, she raised her eyebrows but remained silent. After some time, while the food was going to be delivered, she followed quietly behind the servant delivering the food and retreated.

Jin Cai took a slight glance but kept her thoughts to herself, and after some effort, she made her way out.

Despite being termed a hall, it was actually just a pavilion. It was located on the octagonal mountain in Red Hill Court, below lied a green lake. Since it was the middle of the winter, the lake was frozen with layers of snow. It was surrounded by red and white plum trees on each side which disrupted the bright white landscape, painting vibrant colors.

Behind the plum trees lay Zhuge Family’s horse racing hill. The huge plains were fully grown with pastures brought in by members of the Zhuge Family, specially used to rear the superior breed of horses. This huge plot of land had few visitors as servants were not allowed to enter, hence the serenity.

Chu Qiao was small in stature and she cleverly evaded the watchful eyes of the guards, entering and hastily climbing onto the plains of the horse racing hill and yet no one found out.

The small stature of Chu Qiao had both its pros and cons. Take for example, now that she has to shift the pots, she has to put in additional effort.

As Chu Qiao was about to leave, she saw a suspicious looking shadow creeping about. She bent down and waited until the person left before gradually approaching. She saw a dark horse being tied to a pine tree on her way down. The horse looked strong and well-groomed but did not respond despite noticing her presence. She was puzzled, as this seemingly well-trained horse should be resistant towards the approach of a stranger. Upon lowering her head, she noticed a bundle of buckwheat which had yet to be finished. She tiptoed forward and held the horse’s head and took a closer look for a long time, but the horse did not react.

As she was just about to leave, she turned her head and saw a few dozen white feathered arrows in the bag attached to the horse. She took one out to observe the pure white arrowhead and noticed a carving of “Swallow” forcefully edged on the surface.

The leaders of the various divisions were feasting in the hall while admiring the plum trees. Chu Qiao ran along the deserted trail on the precipice of the octagon mountain. She placed the burning rattan on the trail and poured out a few snakes from the bag she carried.

“Ha! I knew you were the one causing trouble!”A shrill voice suddenly sounded.

Chu Qiao turned around and saw Jin Cai smugly standing there.

Jin Cai chided, “I will definitely tell the Fourth Master this time and that’s it for you!”

“Is that so?” Chu Qiao tilted her head and slyly smiled. Upon hearing trailing footsteps in the distance, she shook her head and said, “I don’t think so.” She instantly leaned back and fell along the precipice.

“It’s there!” Voices in the distance sounded in unison.

Jin Cai wasn’t able to yell out her surprise before getting ferociously pinned down by a group of burly men.

Zhu Shun glared at her and muttered, “Jin Cai, now that you’ve been caught with the loot, what have you got to say?”

Jin Cai was taken aback and hurriedly defended herself, “It’s not me, it’s Jing Xing Er! I just followed her here!”

“Nonsense, I saw you loitering around suspiciously and going to steal that pot of rattan from Zhu housekeeper, yet you still dare to accuse others!” A crisp voice sounded.

Jin Cai turned and saw a familiar little girl standing beside Zhu Shun. Suddenly it clicked and she realized the situation, shouting “She’s in cahoots with Jing Xing Er, Zhu housekeeper, don’t believe her!”

Zhu Shun was sitting in a padded chair lifted by four burly men. After suffering from beatings a few days ago, his bottom was still swelling. After being told, he frowned and spoke in his low voice, “You said you were here with Jing Xing Er, so where exactly is she?”

Chu Qiao blacked out as she lost consciousness. Her heart could not take it any longer. Clutching at the girl’s robes, she said slowly with a hoarse tone, “How long were they gone for? How long were they gone for?”

“It was almost an hour ago. Yue Er, it’s already too late to save her.”

Chu Qiao turned at looked at Xiao Ba, who was standing at the door. Her eyes were red from crying as she raised her head, looking at Chu Qiao as well. When their eyes met, tears started to roll down their cheeks, but none of them made a sound.

“Yue Er, I have to go back. You two have to be careful. From what I heard from the people in the laundry room, Butler Zhu is deliberately targeting you. Did you do anything to offend him?”

There was pin-drop silence in the hut. The courtyard was a huge white space. Both children stood there silently for a long while.

When the clock struck 3 a.m., the drum sounded. The last two children of the Jing family silently snuck through the Qingshi forest, reaching Ting Lake which was behind the Zhuge house. The cold wind rustled the bamboo trees and there was resounding silence from the lake. Its tranquil surface looked no different from any other day.

Chu Qiao kneeled on top of a hill as she said to Xiao Ba who was right beside her, “Xiao Ba, get on your knees. Give our brothers and sisters a kowtow.”

Xiao Ba was barely seven years old but she had experienced a traumatic change tonight. Her tiny face had lost the childish innocence that was supposed to be visible upon it. She knelt silently at Chu Qiao’s side, bowed deeply in the direction of the lake, and knocked her head heavily thrice on the ground.

“Xiao Ba, do you hate this place?”

The child nodded without uttering a word.

Sounding calm, Chu Qiao said lightly, “Do you want to leave?”

The child said in a deep tone, “Yes.”

Chu Qiao looked ahead, her voice calm and composed. She squinted her eyes and frowned, gently saying, “I promise you, I will bring you away as soon as possible. But before we leave, we still have some unfinished business. After all that is over, we will leave this place.”

The child nodded quietly as she kowtowed once again, muttering each word clearly, “Sister Zhi Xiang, you have always prayed for God’s blessings, but I don’t think you knew that they were blind. Take our brothers and sisters with you and move on. Wait and see, as Sister Yue Er and I will avenge you all.”

The cold wind billowed through the pitch-black night. Atop the hill in Qing Shi Forest, two tiny bodies laid towards each other, tightly holding hands.

It was December. At the northwestern border; the Quan Rong people had invaded, burning everything in their way as their large army advanced.

Within twenty days, the war intensified, tens of thousands of common people living outside the gates being dragged into the conflict. The northwestern gates were at a special geographical location. They were between the western fief that was controlled by the Ba Tu Ha clan and the Northern Yan territory that was controlled by the Yan King. The northwestern Old Ba Tu had fought against the Northern Yan’s Lion King for years. Today, as the Mu He clan, who backed Old Ba Tu, stabilized its power within the empire, the Ba Tu Ha family started to gain the upper hand. In the last year, they had finally seized military control of the northwestern gates with blood, cleansing all the officers that were stationed there. Within the empire, other clans were also sending their children to the northwest, hoping to penetrate the empire’s largest military system. When this happened, the old generals who possessed a wealth of experience and had guarded the border had been overthrown. Those that rose to power were the empire’s elites that had never seen blood spilt.

This was precisely why the Quan Rong people had invaded the border. They had seized this opportunity and paid a small price to open up the first entrance towards the gates, allowing their cavalry to rush into miles of fertile land outside the gates.

Even though the Ba Tu Ha family had promptly resisted the attack, sending their elite soldiers into battle, due to their lack of knowledge of the enemy and the numerous factions within the gates, all their attacks lacked cooperation. The confusion within the troops only intensified. Letters of emergency assistance flurried towards the capital, begging the Zhen Huang elders to send troops to resist the invaders.

It was the 27th day of the lunar month. The broken star emerged and Zhao Ming went into hiding. The priest within the Qin Temple summoned a prophecy: the Taihe star is indifferent and the waters of chi contain ice. A calamity is befalling us.

The seven families of power discussed long into the night, finally deciding to send the Huang Tian Brigade to the gates, stabilizing the northwestern region.

When the call to arms was released, it was then sent towards the Sheng Jin Palace. After the emperor read it, he replied: permitted.

Within moments, the capital of Zhen Huang was engulfed in strong winds, and the families of power were scared. In the pitch-black night, rapid currents surged beneath the thick ice on the surface of the river.

At this moment, Chu Qiao was at the northern pavilion, busily working within the dried bushes, carefully finding the winter cat snakes. Suddenly, a resounding horn was heard from a distance, as if a crane was cawing, majestic and forceful. She stood up slowly, squinting towards the south of Zhen Huang City. There stood the Cheng Jin Palace.

In the dark night, roads were not easy to navigate.

In the next afternoon, the heavy snow fell under the sun. Under the glass of the Qing Shan Pavilion, there were two white jade snow-dogs sparkling brightly under the sun, their intricate carvings shining. There had been a huge snowfall the night before, causing almost a foot of snow to be piled up. The cleaners passed by the dogs, not even daring to lay a gaze on them as they were afraid that they might get into trouble.

Jin Cai was wearing a traditional Han vest made from sable skin and a beautiful red dress, with a pink belt tied around her waist. She stood in the middle of the snow-covered ground, looking as gorgeous as ever. This female servant who was always by the fourth young master’s side was barely thirteen years old, but looked slim and graceful, allowing eyes to feast on her gorgeous looks. When she was beside her master, she would be warm and gentle, but now, she had become arrogant and domineering. Her tone was cold as she looked at the children with disgust. They merely wore thin clothes while they carried the jade dogs. She said, “Hold it tightly. The young master has said that jade has life. It will become smooth and clear when it comes into contact with human energy. You pathetic slaves should feel honored to be serving the fourth young master. Don’t be lazy. If anyone is disobedient when I return, you will be dragged to Ting Lake to feed the fish.”

The children nodded timidly, as Jin Cai let out a sneer before heading back into the warm flower room.

After the snow, it became colder and colder. Not even wearing a ferret coat while hugging the heaters would have been of much use, but these children were only wearing a thin layer of clothes out in the cold. The children’s lips were frozen solid within moments.

Chu Qiao was carrying a tray of fresh peaches just as she came from the Lan Shan Yard. When Jin Cai saw her, she ran out of the flower room, calling out to her.

Chu Qiao stopped in her tracks and turned, her face blushing red, appearing ignorant as she said with a tilt of her head, “Sister Jin Cai, is something wrong?”

“The fourth young master is having his afternoon nap. Just hand me the peaches.”

Chu Qiao smiled as she nodded, handing over the peaches. Jin Cai turned and walked back into the flower room. Before she could get comfortable in the room, a loud roar was heard from Xuan Hall. Jin Cai frantically put down the peaches and sprinted towards it.

Before she could reach the door, a colorful shadow flew out of the door, hitting her face with a swoosh. When she felt it, it was soft and cold, with a greasy texture. However, it smelled disgustingly fishy.

Jin Cai looked down and saw a small snake with its head raised. She was scared out of her wits, crying as she fell to the ground.

Chu Qiao ran into the room and saw Zhuge Yue with his brows tightly furrowed together, dressed in light green clothes as he laid on his couch. Dark blood was flowing from his wrist, obviously having been bitten by a snake. She rushed forward and grabbed his wrist while picking up a fruit knife on the table, slashing the wound.

The servants outside the room saw this scene, and some rushed in to grab this treasonous little slave.

Zhuge Yue raised his brows and gently waved his hands, stopping his servants from rushing forward. They saw Chu Qiao cut a cross-shaped wound on his wrist, squeezing it hard for a moment as she sucked the poison out with her mouth. After which, she spit it out and said hurriedly, “Young Master, please do not exert any strength or the poison will spread quicker. I will go get you the doctor.”

At this moment, many slaves gathered at the door. Jin Cai frantically rushed forward, pushing Chu Qiao away as she knelt on the ground while holding Zhuge Yue’s hand. She cried, “Young Master, how are you?”

Zhuge Yue frowned when she grabbed his hand, seemingly annoyed. His feet landed on her chest as he kicked her away, growling, “Scram!”

When Jin Cai touched the ground, she screamed in terror. Snakes were crawling all over the ground, almost twenty of them. It looked strange and terrible.

Chu Qiao took out a candle and lit it immediately, chasing the snakes away using the fire as they were afraid of it. They backed off immediately.

The Zhuge family doctor rushed into the room as the crowd dispersed. The servants of the Qing Shan Court kneeled at the door in fear with ashen looks on their faces.

After a while, the doctor walked out alone as he addressed the servants, “Who is Xing Er?”

Chu Qiao stood up from within the crowd with her short stature and tender face. She whispered as she raised her hand, “I am, sir.”

The doctor did not expect her to be such a young child. Somewhat in a daze, he said with a faltering tone, “Come in, the fourth young master said that you sucked the blood out for him. He asked me to check on you as well.”

There were about one hundred servants kneeling there. Everyone looked up in shock, their gazes falling upon Chu Qiao.

Chu Qiao’s expression turned into fear, as she kowtowed a couple of times, thanking the master’s compassion. After which, she followed the doctor into Xuan Hall.

In the chilly wind, the servants who welcomed the powerful but despised the weak changed their minds about Chu Qiao instantly.

Within a few moments, Chu Qiao walked out with a calm expression, without any signs of arrogance.

When the doctor left, Jin Cai and Jin Chu, the two servants, led a few higher-ranking servants into the room. Zhuge Yue leaned back in his chair. With his eyes half closed, he asked softly, “Who is on duty in this house today?”

Jin Chu looked at Jin Cai. Her face ashen with fear, she stuttered, “Young Master, I, I am, I just…”

“Say no more.” Zhuge Yue’s voice rang cold and deep. “You know the rules here. I don’t keep lazy servants. Go down and receive thirty flogs of the cane. After which, take my letter to the An Jun Court to get a job.”

Once she heard his words, Jin Chu’s tears flowed from her eyes. She cried as she knelt on the ground, “Young Master, can you forgive me this time, I would not dare do it again.”

Zhuge Yue raised his brows. Two burly guards walked forward instantly, dragging Jin Chu out of the room.

“Who are the gatekeepers?”

Two servants knelt onto the floor, their bodies trembling as they kowtowed continuously. They were so afraid that they did not speak a word.

Zhuge Yue opened his eyes and glanced at the two servants. He said, “It’s you two?” With a little sneer, he continued, “All the while, you two were always hitting others. This time, get the canes and go to the well to hit each other. When one dies, the other will not need to suffer punishment.”

The house was filled with dead silence, and Zhuge Yue was upset due to his injured wrist. He frowned and ordered, “Get out, all of you! Just looking at you makes me frustrated.”

Everyone looked as if they had been pardoned. They shuffled back in unison. This time, a small voice suddenly squeaked, “Young Master, can I shift the pots containing burnt rattan outside Xuan Hall?”

Zhuge Yue picked up his brows, looking in the direction of the voice.

Chapter 45: What a Foul Mouth You’ve Got

Jin Qingyue instantly felt better after hearing what Shi Shaochuan said. She believed his words. Before she could decide to check on him further, he quickly spoke again, “While I was married to An Xiaoning, she had brought her cousin to live with us. She then intentionally got her cousin to ask me out, just so she could file for a divorce with me. Thus, I went ahead to bring her cousin out with me, because I was unaware of her scheming plan. As a result…”

At this very moment, he exclaimed all of a sudden, as if he had been wronged and severely ill-treated, “As a result, I was chased out of the car by the both of them after they removed all of my clothing. Her cousin had gone all out to put on the show. She had taken off all her clothes too just so it would seem like I had really committed adultery.”

“Is she really such a person?” asked a stunned Jin Qingyue, who found the matter to be rather inconceivable.

“Isn’t she? Otherwise, she wouldn’t have married your brother so quickly, just after ending things between us.”

Giving his words some serious thought, Jin Qingyue began to think that he indeed made sense. At that instant, her hatred towards her sister-in-law grew even deeper.

“I’m sorry, Shaochuan, I misunderstood you.”

“I actually feel pretty perplexed myself. It’s such a small world, of all people…” said Shi Shaochuan, holding onto her hand.

“It’s okay. At the very most, just stay together with me and don’t bother addressing her,” comforted Jin Qingyue.

“But we’ve yet to gain your parents’ approval. Your brother already knows, and I suppose your parents…”

“It’s okay, I’ll settle the issue with my parents. Since things have already come to this, we might as well just be together openly.” Looking at the time, Jin Qingyue said, “I’ll go home first and contact you again if there’s any news.”

“I’ll send you home, Yueyue.”

“No, it’s fine. I’ll just take a cab,” Jin Qingyue refused and left after waving him goodbye.

Shi Shaochuan stood and watched as her figure receded, a smirk forming on the corner of his lips.

——

Jin Qingyue arrived home to the sight of her parents and brother seated upright on the couch, seemingly waiting for her to return.

After changing out of her shoes and into her home slippers, she sat next to her Mother and confessed voluntarily, “Mother and Father, it’s true, I’m dating Shi Shaochuan.”

Flabbergasted, Mrs. Jin asked, “What?”

Jin Qingyue raised her head and noticed the look of astonishment written all over her parents’ faces. Shifting her gaze towards Jin Qingyan, “Brother, you didn’t tell them about it?”

“No, I didn’t.”

“I thought you’d already told them,” said Jin Qingyue. She felt like biting off her tongue at that very instant. However, it was impossible to take back what she had already said.

“Why are you dating Shi Shaochuan? Don’t tell me, he’s the boyfriend you’ve mentioned to your Mother and me?” questioned Mr. Jin, his forehead creased into a frown.

“Yes…” she admitted. “I didn’t know it was him, initially. I just returned from overseas and I’ve never seen him, even when Brother got married. How else would I have known then? I only found out about it tonight. But he said that he was only married in name to Sister-in-law, and that he had never been intimate with her. Besides, he also mentioned that Sister-in-law and her Cousin had conspired to put on a show and frame him for committing adultery. Her motive was to get him to divorce her.”

“A pack of lies,” scorned Jin Qingyan.

“Brother, why else would Sister-in-law have agreed to marry you right after her divorce? How can you accuse Shaochuan of lying if you weren’t even involved in that matter?” retorted Jin Qingyue, as she raised her chin to look at him.

“You’re going to say that it was the first time that your sister-in-law met your brother, the night she had gotten a divorce, and she actually registered her marriage with your brother the day after, right? Don’t think I’m unaware of what you’re thinking. It’s impossible for her to get a divorce because of your brother. They got a divorce because he couldn’t resist the temptation to have an affair and got caught red-handed by your Sister-in-law. He had been lying to you!” exclaimed Mrs. Jin.

“Mother, we’ve been dating for a while now, and I’m very certain about what kind of person he is.”

“Break up with him right away. Your Father and I will approve of your relationship with anyone but him, so long as they’re decent. What are others going to say about us, if you marry him in the future? We would definitely become the joke and talk of the town,” ordered Mrs. Jin sternly.

“I don’t care what others think of me, it’s my own business. Besides, you’re really so sure that Brother will never get a divorce with Sister-in-law?”

“What nonsense are you spouting? Your Brother has only been married for days, and you’re already trying to jinx him. You’re really becoming more and more callous with your words, the older you get. Did living overseas for too long cause you to become like this? Let me warn you, you’d better break up with him as soon as possible, because your Father and I will never approve of you two,” chided the infuriated Mrs. Jin.

“In that case, I’ll let you know of my decision too. Over my dead body will I break up with him,” she retaliated while rising from her seat.

After finishing her sentence, she headed straight back to her bedroom.

“What should we do now? It really puzzles me why this daughter of mine is becoming more worrying the older she gets,” Mrs. Jin lamented.

“In my opinion, Shi Shaochuan seems like a tough nut to crack. Be cautious of him. I’ll get going,” said Jin Qingyan.

“Alright, drive safely,” wished Mrs. Jin, standing up to walk him out.

On the journey home, Jin Qingyan began to ponder over how upset Long Tianze looked when they came out of the dance club.

Feeling rather worried about him, Jin Qingyan decided to give him a call. However, he did not expect Long Tianze to answer the call so quickly. Neither did he think that Long Tianze would be sober, sounding so calm and collected.

“You’re worried about me?”

“I just wanted to say, it’s time you settled down with someone, Tianze.”

“Do I seem that desperate for a woman? I just thought your Sister would have better taste in men, that’s all,” said Long Tianze, swallowing the hard pill and hiding his sadness.

“I agree with you. Tianze, just give up on her. Don’t think I don’t know how you feel about her.”

“She really doesn’t matter that much to me. Alright, we should stop being so long-winded. It’s time for me to go look for a pretty babe.”

“Okay.”

The smile on Long Tianze’s face disappeared as soon as he hung up the phone.

He sped along the roads with bloodshot eyes. Unable to take it any longer, he decided to give Jin Qingyue a call.

“What is it?” she asked coldly, as usual. She did not seem to be surprised at the fact that he had called her.

“What do you like about that scumbag?” asked Long Tianze calmly.

Jin Qingyue was infuriated upon hearing the word “scumbag”. “What a foul mouth you’ve got, Long Tianze. Please mind your words. Have you got anything to do with what I like about him?” she hissed.

“Alright, I won’t talk about that. Would you like to hear what’s on my mind?” he continued, cocking his head backwards slightly.

“Long Tianze, did you call me up late at night just to tell me these? I’m really busy and I don’t have time to hear your thoughts.”

Just as she finished speaking, a beeping sound could be heard from the other end of the phone and she ended the call.

As he drove home in the dark of night, Long Tianze slipped into a trance.

The impetuous recklessness within him which he had tried to hide began to intensify.

He wanted badly to vent his frustration, but he did not know who to turn to.

While scanning his surroundings, a figure loitering around the entrance of the bar stealthily caught his attention all of a sudden. He squinted and caught a glimpse of the face of the figure, after which he instantly opened the door and alighted from the car.

Chapter 44: How Capable of You
Translator: Atlas Studios Editor: Atlas Studios

Thinking that it was a good idea, Mrs. Jin said, “Yes, we have to be secretive when observing someone. If it’s really your personality he’s in love with, then we would be fine with you dating him.”

Noticing that her parents did not seem to disapprove of her relationship, she nodded and said, “I think he’s pretty good-looking, and he’s rather generous with me as well. He seems to come from a wealthy background — he often brings me to dine at classy, exquisite restaurants, and he gives me expensive gifts.”

As soon as she finished her words, her mobile phone rang. .

Looking down at the caller display, she realized it was a call from Shi Shaochuan. “Speak of the devil. Mother and Father, I’ll get going,” she said, grimacing at her parents.

“Go ahead. Come home earlier,” instructed Mrs. Jin.

“Got it.” Jin Qingyue waited until she had left the house before answering the call. In a sweet, gentle voice resembling that of a young girl in love, she cooed, “Hello, Shaochuan.”

“Where are you? I’ll come to pick you up,” Shi Shaochuan said over the phone.

“You don’t have to. Where are you? I’ll go look for you.”

“I’m waiting for you at our usual haunt.”

“Alright.” Jin Qingyue hung up the phone, filled with excitement. Instead of driving, she hopped onto a cab and made her way to a five-star hotel.

Clad in a face mask and cap, Jin Qingyue entered the elevator and arrived at the 12th floor. She then headed to room 1232 and pressed the doorbell. Shortly after, Shi Shaochuan opened the door and carried her into the room before closing the door shut with his foot.

The overly-excited pair began smooching each other, from the door all the way to the bed, as they began to breathe harder and quicker.

At last, they stared deeply into each other’s eyes while Jin Qingyue began to speak in between breaths, “I told my parents that I have a boyfriend now.”

“What did they say about that?”

“What else could they have said? They just asked me some basic questions, nothing out of the ordinary. Shaochuan, what does your family do?”

“They run a business. I’m the only child, with no siblings at all,” he answered as he rubbed the tip of her nose affectionately.

“I have a brother, but he’s already married,” said Jin Qingyue.

“Then, do you think I’m husband material?”

“Well…” Jin Qingyue said with a smile as she looked down, “We haven’t known each other for too long, yet. But I’ll know if you’re husband material once I get to understand you deeper.”

“Don’t we already understand each other deeply enough? I guess we’ll have to explore each other, tonight,” he said as he began touching her inappropriately.

“You’re naughty…”

“Isn’t that what you like about me?”

“…”

An hour had passed, and the pair snuggled up against the bedhead. “Do you believe in fortune-telling?” asked Jin Qingyue.

“Not at all, those things are sheer nonsense. They’re all just a bunch of swindlers,” Shi Shaochuan answered in disdain.

Recalling what his ex-wife had told him, about his grandfather asking for his fortune to be told — which revealed that he would never have a successful marriage, no matter how many times he tried, and that An Xiaoning would be the only one who would’ve stayed with him until death did them part — he could not help but find it ridiculous.

Jin Qingyue continued, “I didn’t believe it too, at first. But the incident with my mother had really convinced me. If my mother hadn’t experienced it firsthand, I guess she would’ve been skeptical too.”

“What happened to your mother?”

Jin Qingyue then spilled the beans about her mother’s incident. “Your sister-in-law must really be something, then,” said Shi Shaochuan in response.

“Yeah, my brother wouldn’t have married her otherwise. She’s nothing other than just a pretty face who’s capable of fortune-telling.”

“Perhaps she’s great in bed.”

“Maybe,” said Jin Qingyue, covering her mouth with her hand as she giggled.

The pair spent the day at the hotel and settled their meals by calling for room service. After an entire day of clinging on to each other, they checked out of the hotel in the evening, all rejuvenated and energized.

“It’s only seven something now. I have about two to three hours more until my curfew. Shall we go to the dance club?”

“Sure.” Shi Shaochuan then brought her to the most popular dance club in town, and they entered, hand in hand.

——

Just as Long Tianze and Jin Qingyan took a seat, the cheerful expression on Long Tianze began to dissipate all of a sudden. “Hey, look who’s there,” he said.

A sullen look formed on Jin Qingyan’s face as he turned..

They were greeted with the sight of Jin Qingyue holding onto the arm of An Xiaoning’s ex-husband with one hand while grasping his hand with the other.

Long Tianze was not too familiar with Shi Shaochuan, though Jin Qingyan had recognized him right away, simply for the fact that he was his wife’s ex-husband. It was only natural for Shi Shaochuan to be deeply etched in Jin Qingyan’s memory because the latter had once investigated about him in secret.

Not noticing them at first, Jin Qingyue walked towards their direction. She stopped in her tracks the very moment she saw them. “Yueyue, what’s the matter?” asked Shi Shaochuan.

“I just saw my brother here. Perfect, let’s go say hi, you’re going to meet him sooner or later anyway,” said Jin Qingyue as she continued to walk towards them.

“Where is your brother?”

“Over there, in front of us.”

Shi Shaochuan received a great shock the moment Jin Qingyue pulled him forward.

What was he thinking? He would never have expected for her brother to be Jin Qingyan, his ex-wife’s current husband!

“Brother, this is my boyfriend.”

Noticing how startled he was, Jin Qingyue gave him a tug and urged, “Quick, say ‘Hi’ to my brother.”

“H… hello.”

Jin Qingyan shot them a deadly glance and sneered, “How capable of my wife’s ex-husband, to have become my sister’s boyfriend in the blink of an eye.”

Upon hearing his words, Long Tianze knew straight away who Shi Shaochuan was. “Brother, what are you saying?” asked a confused Jin Qingyue.

“Why don’t you get him to explain?” said Jin Qingyan coldly. He stood up and left instantly. Long Tianze stared at Jin Qingyue and Shi Shaochuan deeply, then left together with Jin Qingyan.

As if she had been struck by lightning, Jin Qingyue finally realized what was going on and turned to ask him, “You’re actually sister-in-law’s ex-husband?”

“Well, I didn’t know you were his sister,” said Shi Shaochuan, who was struck dumb and at a loss for words for a clear explanation. With stirred feelings, he hurriedly chased after Jin Qingyue, who had stomped off quickly.

He caught up to Jin Qingyue outside the dance club and profusely tried to explain himself, “Yueyue, hear me out. I didn’t mean to hide it from you. It’s just that that marriage meant nothing to me at all. Our relationship is what matters the most to me now.”

“You actually hid such a serious matter from me. Why do you have to be my sister-in-law’s ex-husband? Think about it, will my parents approve of our relationship when they find out?” said an exasperated Jin Qingyue. She had thought that she had finally found true love, yet it turned out to be not only a second marriage but also…

“You think I wanted this? I swear I don’t want to have anything to do with An Xiaoning at all. Yueyue, I love you. Although we haven’t known each other for long, you make me really happy. Don’t get angry, let’s talk about it calmly. Though I was married to An Xiaoning for two years, I’ve never been intimate with her,” Shi Shaochuan continued to explain.

“Never?” asked Jin Qingyue, startled at his confession.

“Never. So we’re only married in name. I’ve never been intimate with her because I didn’t want to treat it like a real marriage. If it hadn’t been for my grandfather who insisted I marry her, I would’ve never given in.”

Chapter 92: A Man of His Word

Translator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi-Bo Studio
Zhou Jingyun judged that the man was not Jiang Tong’s lover based on the “Are you comfortable” line that he had heard on the phone. He was the type of man who served people.

Jiang Tong laughed, and it was the kind of laughter that could not be controlled. “Haha, You’re too funny. Don’t tell me you’re really jealous?”

“I’m afraid you’ll ruin my reputation!” Zhou Jingyun rolled his eyes and decisively changed the topic. “You know Jiao Qinglong?”

“We’re friends,” Jiang Tong answered.

“When did you meet him?” Zhou Jingyun asked again.

“Don’t you think you have too many questions?” Jiang Tong said with a smile, “In our line of work, you should understand that some things are secrets that can not be told.”

Zhou Jingyun shut his mouth expressionlessly. He knew it was useless to ask. Jiang Tong would not tell him.

“Come, apologize to me.” Jiang Tong pointed at the carpet in front of her and beckoned Zhou Jingyun with her finger. Of course, she promised that she had no intention of humiliating Zhou Jingyun. If you were willing to bet, then you had to be willing to accept defeat. How could it escalate to humiliation? However, she couldn’t deny that she really wanted to see Zhou Jingyun break the calm expression on his face and kneel down in front of her to apologize. Well… how should she put it? This was probably the vile feeling that everyone had in their bones.

Zhou Jingyun looked at Jiang Tong with a dark gaze. It would be a lie to say that he didn’t regret it. He did regret that he had raised the bet with Jiang Tong out of agitation! He wasn’t afraid of losing money, but the idea of kneeling on the floor to apologize made him very uncomfortable. He had never thought that he would lose, so he agreed to Jiang Tong’s offer.

“Fifty million dollars,” Zhou Jingyun made a bid.

“I refuse,” Jiang Tong refused without thinking. She knew what Zhou Jingyun meant. He wanted to use fifty million to buy his way out of kneeling to apologize to her. If it were anyone else, they would definitely agree. However, Jiang Tong was different. She didn’t lack money. Although she didn’t have much money, she could get the money anytime she wanted.

“No negotiation?” Zhou Jingyun frowned.

“You want to go back on your word? Don’t keep your word? Fine. I can’t force you anyway,” Jiang Tong said and shrugged her shoulders.

“I’m not going back on my word. I’m negotiating with you. You’re the one that has the final say,” Zhou Jingyun said immediately.

“Oh, then there’s no need to negotiate,” Jiang Tong smiled, “Boss Zhou, tell me, if I were the one who lost the bet, would you allow me to change the terms? You, Zhou Jingyun, have always been a man of your word. For example, if you really lost the bet with Shao Ying, you would also submit and marry Shao Ying, right?”

Zhou Jingyun felt very uncomfortable. He had a headache whenever he thought of kneeling down to a woman as powerful as Jiang Tong. This would encourage this woman’s arrogance and make her even cockier. In fact, besides Jiang Tong’s overly arrogant personality, Zhou Jingyun had a good impression of her because Jiang Tong’s ability was too strong, so strong that it was beyond his imagination. He had never thought that there would be a woman like Jiang Tong, who was mysterious and powerful, and could intangibly attract people’s attention.

“One hundred million,” Zhou Jingyun said again.

“Don’t be like this. It makes it seem like I’m forcing you to kneel down,” Jiang Tong said with a smile, “Why don’t we forget about it? If you’re not willing to fulfill the bet, then I don’t need to force you. We’re in a cooperative relationship now. Don’t make things too tense. It’s not good.”

What Jiang Tong said made Zhou Jingyun feel that this matter couldn’t be resolved just like that. He owed such a big favor to Jiang Tong for this matter and if he even reneged on their bet… this was something Zhou Jingyun could not do.

“Why don’t you give me a condition? I really don’t want to kneel,” said Zhou Jingyun. If a man had gold under his knees which made him not want to kneel, then Zhou Jingyun had a treasury under his knees!

“Forget it.” Jiang Tong waved her hand. Her attitude was very clear. She didn’t have any other conditions. It was just this one condition. If Zhou Jingyun couldn’t do it, then forget it.

Zhou Jingyun supported his desk with both hands and slowly stood up. “I, Zhou Jingyun, am definitely not a person who doesn’t keep his word.” He looked at Jiang Tong and said seriously. Since Jiang Tong didn’t agree to change the condition, then he could only follow the terms of the bet!

“Please.” Jiang Tong stretched out her hand to signal.

Zhou Jingyun walked out from behind the boss’s desk. His actions were slow and leisurely. Jiang Tong understood that even a person who kept his word would have to go through an intense struggle in the face of such a situation. Just as Zhou Jingyun was getting closer and closer to Jiang Tong, his phone rang. Zhou Jingyun turned around to take a look and picked up the phone to answer the call.

Zhou Mingfei’s voice came from the other end of the phone. Zhou Mingfei asked, “Big Brother, has Sister-in-law arrived at your company?”

Chapter 91: Don’t You Find It Dirty

Translator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi-Bo Studio
In a room decorated with luxurious and dim lighting, Jiang Tong was lying on the massage table, making a phone call. A young and handsome male technician was massaging her back.

“What are you so agitated about?” Jiang Tong said with a smile, “Did you hear something? Are you jealous?”

Zhou Jingyun in the office suddenly calmed down. In fact, he didn’t know why he was agitated. When he heard a man ask Jiang Tong if she was comfortable, he suddenly became nervous. Even he did not know why he had such a reaction.

“Heheh,” Zhou Jingyun sneered and sat back on the chair. “You have the time to find a man at a time like this.”

“It’s my fault for being young,” Jiang Tong replied with a smile. She did not explain to Zhou Jingyun that the situation was not what Zhou Jingyun thought. She also did not tell Zhou Jingyun that she was here for a massage. She would not tell him that she had come for a massage to relax because she had exercised for several hours straight before going to bed last night, causing her muscles to ache all over her body! Before this, she had no future in her life and had been living in that constant time loop. Even if she exercised, her body’s fitness would be reset. Therefore, her current physical fitness was average. She had exercised too much yesterday and woke up with excruciating pain.

It would be like this when one just started exercising, and there would be such a stage, so Jiang Tong was mentally prepared. However, she was not going to tell Zhou Jingyun because it would make her look very stupid. After all, no one would almost cripple themselves because of exercise!

“When will you come to the company?” Zhou Jingyun asked coldly.

“I just started. It will take another hour,” Jiang Tong replied casually. As soon as she finished speaking, Zhou Jingyun hung up the phone.

Jiang Tong: “…”

She shook her head, put her phone aside, and continued to enjoy the massage from the technician.

An hour later, Zhou Mingfei, who was wearing a suit, pushed open the door. Then, he said to Jiang Tong who was lying on the bed, “Let’s go, Sister-in-law. Let’s have lunch together. It’s already noon.”

The massage place where Jiang Tong was at was none other than Zhou Mingfei’s Lihao Ballroom. Massaging naturally had to be done professionally. Although Zhou Mingfei’s place was not a clean place, the massage technicians here had gone through professional training, and the massage technique utilized made her feel very comfortable. The reason why she did not find a female technician was that a female technician’s hand strength would be too weak and could not meet Jiang Tong’s requirements.

“I’m not eating.” Jiang Tong picked up the phone and looked at the time. Then, she said to the male massage technician, “That’s all for today. I still have something to do.”

Hearing Jiang Tong’s words, the male technician stopped and began to pack up the essential oils and other things. Zhou Mingfei glanced at the male technician. He knew his subordinates’ abilities well, but he still asked, “Sister-in-law, did you have a good massage?”

“Yes, it’s quite good. You worked hard,” Jiang Tong praised with a smile.

“Thank you, Miss Jiang,” the male massage technician quickly thanked her.

“Alright, you may leave.” Zhou Mingfei tilted his head to gesture to the male massage technician.

When the male massage technician finished packing up and walked out with the box. When he passed by Zhou Mingfei, Zhou Mingfei said in a low voice, “Go to the finance department to get 10,000 dollars. I’ll give you the afternoon off. Go and play.”

“Thank you, Boss!” The male massage technician happily bowed to Zhou Mingfei and left happily. He knew that there would definitely be a reward for giving the boss’s sister-in-law a good massage. Although the process was quite tiring, it was still worth it!

After the male technician left, Zhou Mingfei put his hand in his pocket and leaned against the door. He asked, “Sister-in-law, do you really have something urgent? If you’re not in a hurry, let’s go have a meal first. It won’t take much time.”

“Your big brother is looking for me. Do you think it’s urgent?” Jiang Tong stood up and asked with a smile. She didn’t say whether she was in a hurry or not, but Zhou Mingfei instantly showed an expression of understanding. Of course, the boyfriend was more important than his younger brother. Zhou Mingfei shrugged and replied, “Alright, let’s eat together next time.”

Zhou Mingfei left first. Jiang Tong took a shower and changed her clothes. Then, she drove to Huanyu Building. It was almost noon. Although it was lunchtime, Zhou Jingyun was still waiting for Jiang Tong in the office.

Jiang Tong pushed the door open and walked into the office. She saw Zhou Jingyun sitting behind the desk and asked him with a smile, “Have you signed the contract?”

Then, she walked to the sofa at the side. Zhou Jingyun looked at Jiang Tong expressionlessly. His gaze followed Jiang Tong’s movements.

“Why are you looking at me? I’m asking you a question. Did the contract not go smoothly?” Jiang Tong asked again when she saw that Zhou Jingyun kept looking at her without saying anything.

“You…” Zhou Jingyun narrowed his eyes. After a pause, he continued, “Can you take note of your identity and status? To the public, you are my girlfriend, and yet you are involved with other men. Don’t you find it dirty to go to such a place to find a man?”

Chapter 88: Not For Long
Translator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi-Bo Studio

Sensing Tang Mengying’s negative vibes, Su Qianci looked at her. The moment Su Qianci cast her glance that way, the hatred and jealousy in Tang Mengying’s eyes disappeared immediately, replaced by a gentle smile.

How flexible.

“Seeing you are okay, I can be assured. Su Qianci, I’ll come to check on you later. Today is the first day for me to work as brother Li Sicheng’s secretary. I have to go to work now.”

Li Sicheng’s secretary? In Su Qianci’s last lifetime, Tang Mengying used this identity to give her all the suggestions about Li Sicheng’s preference in bed, tell her how to keep him at home, and provided her with his whereabouts for her to spy on him. In the beginning, Su Qianci had believed Tang Mengying. However, each time, Li Sicheng had disliked Su Qianci more. He had then avoided her and home. Later on, Tang Mengying went everywhere with Li Sicheng, making everyone believe that she was the rightful Mrs. Li.

And now, secretary again? Su Qianci’s heart sank but tried to look surprised. “You became his secretary?”

Tang Mengying nodded and said with a smile, “Yes.”

“That’s great. He has some stomach issues and cannot go to bed without eating what I cook. You have to tell him to eat more often.” That was a lie. She had only cooked for him once.

However, hearing Su Qianci’s words, Tang Mengying’s smile froze. “I did not know you know how to cook.”

“I don’t. However, Li Sicheng said that whatever I cook is delicious in his eyes.” Then Su Qianci bowed her head, looking shy. Qin Shuhua felt reassured. It seemed that this couple had a good relationship. Forget it. Although she liked Tang Mengying better, his son never said something like that in front of Tang Mengying.

Qin Shuhua teased, “Now you’re shy.”

Su Qianci blushed even more, glancing at Tang Mengying. Tang Mengying did not look too comfortable and left immediately, saying that she was going be late for work. The moment Tang Mengying stepped out of the ward, she clenched her fists and gritted her teeth.

Su Qianci, wait for it. You will not stay happy for long. This time, I took the life of your child. Next time, I will take your man.

Qin Shuhua kept Su Qianci company for a while and left when the nurse came to put a new drip on her. Su Qianci fell asleep again and woke up in the afternoon. As she opened her eyes, she saw someone sitting next to her. Su Qianci was first startled, but then found it was Li Sicheng.

Li Sicheng stopped tapping on the keyboard and turned to look at her. “Did I wake you?”

Su Qianci shook her head and wanted to get out of the bed. However, as she moved, she suddenly felt dizzy and almost fell. Li Sicheng quickly caught her. One of his hand was holding her arm, and the other was on her waist. She could sense the heat from his skin.

Su Qianci felt a bit uneasy, squirmed, and said, “I… I need to go to the bathroom.”

“Okay, let’s go.”

Su Qianci was shocked.

Let’s go?

Was he going to take her? Looking up, she found Li Sicheng did not seem to be joking.

Chapter 9: Chapter 9
Translator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi-Bo Studio

A voice suddenly sounded. Chu Qiao turned towards the crowd and saw a boy that served in a scholar’s study speaking loudly with an arrogant tone. Not far away, a teenager with a long and slender figure wearing a dark green robe stood before the court hall with his back facing the crowd. At his side, there were four followers.

Zhu Shun was stunned. Turning his head hurriedly, he pathetically bent down, well below his crotch. He nodded while he bowed and scraped, “Royal Highness Yan, my men were not well disciplined, causing them to make fools of themselves in front of your Royal Highness.”

“Is your servant’s discipline more important, or is my family’s royal highness more important? Zhu Shun, I think you must be crazy.”

Zhu Shun was taken aback. He got on his knees and started to kowtow, hurriedly saying, “I wouldn’t dare, I wouldn’t dare, I know I am wrong.”

The young attendant snorted, “If you know your mistake, what are you still doing here?”

After hearing that, Zhu Shun stood up at once, rushing towards Zhuge Huai’s study room. The servants in the household retreated to a corner. One of them said cautiously, “Can I invite Royal Highness Yan to wait in the hall?”

The teenager dressed in robes nodded and turned slowly, his jet black eyes sweeping through his surroundings. When he saw Chu Qiao, his eyes narrowed, as though he remembered a thing or two. He walked straight up to her.

Chu Qiao remained calm and cautiously took two steps back. When Yan Xun saw her retreat, he stopped and thought to himself for awhile. He took out a white porcelain bottle from the pocket in his sleeves. Pictures of delicate orchids were engraved onto it. The teenager reached out with the bottle in his hand and nodded, signalling for her to take the bottle.

Chu Qiao looked up and down at Yan Xun, and the scene at the hunting arena flashed by her eyes. She stood her ground with caution.

Yan Xun was puzzled. Immediately, his lips waned and let out a grin, bending down to place the bottle gently on the floor. After which, he turned and led his followers into the hall.

“Urgh.” A slight groan could be heard behind her. Xiao Qi barely made out Chu Qiao’s features. Her voice as soft as mosquitoes, with paramount fear, she cried, “Sister Yue Er, Xiao Qi… is Xiao Qi dying?”

Chu Qiao crouched down and placed the porcelain bottle in her hand. The muscles tightened throughout her body, and she looked gloomily towards the main house of the Zhuge household. She said slow and firmly, “Xiao Qi, I assure you, you will be okay.”

Carrying Xiao Qi, she ran back to the slave’s yard, rushing into the room and cleaning the wound before bandaging it. The medicine Yan Xun had given her was very effective. It could not only stop the bleeding, but also had a mild anaesthetic effect. Xiao Qi let out several hums before falling into a deep sleep.

Xiao Ba, who had been sick all this while, woke up and could barely get out of bed. These children were traumatised by all the recent incidents. No one spoke a word after they woke up, looking at Chu Qiao busily taking care of Xiao Qi with dazed looks like a bunch of fools.

It was getting late. Chu Qiao wiped the sweat off her forehead, the wound on her shoulder blazing in pain. She leaned against the wall, listening to Xiao Qi’s soft cries of pain in her sleep. It felt as if someone had tightly gripped her heart and yanked it out resolutely, throwing it onto the freezing snowy ground. Closing her eyes, Lin Xi appeared in her mind. The boy that was good looking and pure, the one that promised that he would protect her, the one that was beaten so viciously that he was unrecognizable.

A stream of tears flowed from her tightly shut eyes. They flowed down her chin, dripping onto her cloth shoes.

Suddenly, a frantic voice could be heard outside the door. In a moment of shock, Chu Qiao opened the door and walked out. A girl that was twelve to thirteen years old stood in the yard. When she saw Chu Qiao, it seemed as though she had seen her savior. She cried and rushed forward, “Yue Er, Zhi Xiang and the children from the Jing family were taken away by the men Butler Zhu sent.”

Chu Qiao frowned, and her voice sank. “Taken away? When did this happen?”

“They left early in the morning. I only managed to find Lin Xi, asking him to plead forgiveness from the fourth young master. A day has passed but there is still no news from him. What do we do?”

“Did they say what the children were doing?”

Wiping her tears, the girl cried and said, “They said… They said the children were being sent to the old master’s house outside the city.”

“What?” Chu Qiao exclaimed. Alarm bells started ringing in her mind. The rumors Lin Xi had told them these past few days about the beastly hobbies of the old master ran rampant in her mind. Her face paled.

Xiao Ba stood at the door. Hearing their conversation, she walked up, as if in a trance. She tugged at Chu Qiao’s sleeves. Her voice was soft, like a small injured animal. She asked repeatedly, “Sister Yue Er, where are Sister Zhi Xiang and the rest of the children? Where did they go?”

Chu Qiao reacted, turned around, and sprinted out the door.

“Yue Er!” the girl cried from behind. Chu Qiao did not look back, a bad feeling entrenched in her mind. She did not know whether she would be able to make it, and did not know whether she had a chance of rescuing those children. She could only do her best, sprinting ahead, not daring to stop.

She passed the Qing Shan court, the stables, the back gardens. Sprinting forward, she would reach the five curve corridors of the front court. All of a sudden, the sound of hurried footsteps were heard. Chu Qiao stopped with caution.

“Sister Yue Er?” A tiny voice was heard from behind her. Chu Qiao was stunned. She turned, only to see Xiao Ba dressed in a loose blouse, standing pitifully behind her. She had not even put on her shoes. In a daze, she asked, “Where did Sister Zhi Xiang and the others go?”

Holding Xiao Ba, Chu Qiao turned and crouched beside a bush. It was already winter and all its flowers had wilted. Luckily, it was in the middle of the night, where lights were sparse. It would be difficult to spot them.

The sound of footsteps came closer and closer. There were four people pushing a cart towards them. One of them was pushing, with the other three supporting the sides of the cart. The road Chu Qiao had used was already very remote, and only the cleaners would use this road. She pulled Xiao Ba close and crouched within the bush, quietly waiting for the people to pass.

These people walked up to where the two of them were hiding and stopped. Xiao Ba appeared very afraid, her body shuddering, tightly grabbing Chu Qiao’s clothes in her hands and not daring to move an inch.

One of the men said gruffly, “Guys, let’s take a rest. We walked quite a distance without rest. At least let me have a smoke.”

The others laughed, “Old Liu’s smoking addiction is here.” After which, they lit their cigarettes in glee, starting to smoke.

Chu Qiao started to get anxious and her brows were tightly knit together. As the cold wind blew by, Xiao Ba, who was dressed thinly, started to shiver vigorously due to the cold. With the northern winds picking up speed, the straw mat on top of the cart was blown up with a swoosh, circling in the air for awhile before landing on the ground with a crunch. The yellow straw mat was red in color, drenched in dark red blood.

Chu Qiao and Xiao Ba gazed into the cart. With lightning speed, Chu Qiao threw her hand onto Xiao Ba’s mouth, shutting it tightly.

The moon shone through the clouds, allowing dim white moonlight to illuminate the surroundings. All they saw were small bodies of children being piled onto the medium pushcart, like a pile of lifeless radishes. Zhi Xiang’s skinny body lay naked, with bruises all over it. Her eyes were still wide in shock, with blood clots at the corner of her eyes. Her lower torso was a mess and limbs were still being tied together. Her posture was strange and she had been placed in the most humiliating manner at the top of the pile of bodies. Chu Qiao covered Xiao Ba’s mouth tightly, with her other hand hugging her in a tight grip. The child seemed like she had gone mad, desperately wanting to break free from her grip. Enormous drops of warm tears rolled down Chu Qiao’s arms, her teeth sinking mercilessly into Chu Qiao’s palm. Fresh blood seeped out, flowing down her fair wrist, and eventually dripping onto the blackened soil. Moonlight shone through the sparse tree onto them, covering them in mottled shadows as dismal as frost.

No one knew how much time had passed. The cart started to get further and further away, and they were surrounded by dead silence. Chu Qiao let go of her hand slowly. The flesh in her palm could be seen and was covered in blood. Xiao Ba seemed as though she had become dumb, simply standing there quietly, in a daze. Chu Qiao reached out and patted her on her cheek, calling out her name cautiously with a hoarse voice.

The wind was frigid. Withered branches whirled in the air. In this night of dead silence, music sounded from the main hall of the front court as if it had come from another world.

“Kill them…” the six year old child murmured. Her eyes widening all of a sudden, she continued, “I want to go and kill… Kill them!”

The child had bloodshot eyes, rummaging around as if she was looking for something. Suddenly, she picked up a stone from the bush, stood up, and wanted to run towards the cart. Luckily, Chu Qiao had a fast reaction. She held the child back, holding her tightly in her arms.

“Kill them!” Kill them!” The child could not hold it back anymore as she roared in fury, her face twisted with hatred and despair, tears streaking down her face. She could collapse any moment.

Chu Qiao felt as if a knife had been driven through her heart. She held this crazed child in her arms and finally succumbed to her torrential tears.

These animals, these beasts, a thousand deaths would not be enough to wash away the sins of these scum. She had never felt such intense hate, and she definitely never had felt such a desire to kill someone. She was consumed by an overwhelming amount of hatred. She hated them, hated the cruelty of those people, hated this cruel world. But she hated her weakness and her helplessness the most. She hated that she could only watch these events unfold, but could not do anything about them.

The child in her arms was nearing collapse. Her cries seemed like knives, slicing away at Chu Qiao’s heart. If she could get her hands on a shotgun, she would not hesitate to rush into the Zhuge household, killing every one of those scum living inside.

It was a pity that she did not have one. She had nothing. She had no money, no power, no background, no skills, and no arms. She was just a spirit from another world being trapped in the small body of Jing Yue Er. Even though she had the brains and knowledge that were thousands of years more advanced than the time she was in, at that moment, she could only hide carefully in the bush. She had not even been able to muster the courage to see them one last time.

Chu Qiao raised her head slowly, allowing the cold moonlight to shine on her face. She secretly swore to herself that this could only happen once. She would never want this to happen again. She never wanted to live with nothing, and never wanted to live without the ability to protect herself. Never again!

The cold moon seemed like it was liquid. In such a huge household, two weak and lowly slaves crouched in the bushes within the back garden like two shy puppies, laying close to each other. However, in their hearts, they had enough hate to destroy the world.

By the time they reached the slave’s yard, it was already midnight. Before entering the gate, she saw that the door was wide open. Chu Qiao’s heart sank. She let go of Xiao Ba’s hand before running into the house.

The room was a mess. The top of the bed-stove was filled with blood stains, with adult footprints covering the floor. There was no sign of Xiao Qi.

“Yue Er, you are back!” The girl whom she had met before crawled out from the pile of firewood at the corner of the room.

Chu Qiao hurried forward and pulled her back. She asked in a deep voice, “Where is Xiao Qi? Where did Xiao Qi go?”

The girl cried and replied, “Butler Zhu brought his men over and took Xiao Qi with him. He said that she could no longer work without one hand. They carried her out and wanted to throw her into the Ting Lake to feed the crocodiles.”

Chapter 32: Let Her Leave (2)

Translator: Paperplane Editor: Caron_
“Mm, that’s right!” Tang Huahua then took over from Bo He, “Xiaoyang said the guy was handsome and drove an Audi. He Xuezhang’s car is an Audi. Bo He and I have even been in it twice now, so we suspect Lin Ya must’ve moved in with He Xuezhang.”

“It’s not just a suspicion—we’re sure of it.” Compared to Tang Huahua, Bo He’s tone of voice sounded calmer and more assured by far. “I remember when we went to that outdoor party, someone from He Xuezhang’s dorm mentioned that he occasionally stayed in the dorms, but he has his own apartment. They say it’s a mansion. What’s more, it’s worth ten million and completely paid off. He Xuezhang really isn’t just your average rich person…”

Of course, He Jichen was no average rich person—he had the listed company, He Enterprises, behind him. Not to mention, he had a mansion in the heart of Beijing worth ten million. He was even able to afford a villa worth billions in the rich neighbourhood up on the north side of Beijing.

Since four years ago, anything regarding He Jichen long had nothing to do with me…

Ji Yi’s facial expression didn’t change much as she grabbed a change of clothes and walked into the bathroom.

As they say, don’t believe what people tell you until you see it for yourself.

More or less, women liked to gossip; Ji Yi was just having a half-hearted conversation with Bo He and Tang Huahua—who said there was any truth to the rumors? The next day, when she went to her afternoon fitness class, she made a detour into the school supermarket and bought a bottle of water. On her way out, she saw Lin Ya and He Jichen together, and that was when she realized that what she, Bo He and Tang Huahua gossiped about was all true.

The two of them stood facing each other, talking about something.

He Jichen lowered his head and played around with his car keys. He leaned against his car which flashed in the sunlight every now and then.

It was just as Tang Huahua and Bo He described; he really did have an Audi.

At that thought, Ji Yi drew her gaze back from He Jichen and Lin Ya. As she did so, He Jichen, who had his head lowered from the start, coincidentally looked up in the direction where she was standing.

The sun was bright, so Ji Yi wasn’t sure if she was seeing things but she thought she saw He Jichen slightly stunned. Then, he abruptly straightened up like he was ready to rush over towards her.

Ji Yi instinctively raised her legs and bolted in the direction of the sports track.

After putting a good fifty meters between He Jichen and herself, she turned her head back to see that He Jichen and Lin Ya were rooted at the same spot. She couldn’t help but secretly laugh to herself. As she figured, her eyes were just playing with her; why would He Jichen come rushing over to her? Yet his Audi looked a little familiar as though she’d seen it somewhere before…

Recently, He Jichen hadn’t felt great, especially today. As he drove away from school, he realized he left his lighter in the dorms, so he stopped by the supermarket near the school to get a new one. As he got out the car, he was stopped by Lin Ya, who he hadn’t seen for a while.

Lin Ya stood in front of him rambling on about a bunch of things, but he wasn’t really listening so he didn’t say a thing.

Chapter 33: Let Her Leave (3)

Translator: Paperplane Editor: Caron_
Actually, Lin Ya didn’t say much, but he just didn’t have the patience for her. He lifted his head, hoping to avoid her, but then he saw her. It was Ji Yi, standing not too far away by the entrance of the supermarket.

She was looking over at him and Lin Ya. Her eyes were clear—there was no emotion at all—but in that very moment, his heart skipped a beat for some reason. An indescribable sense of panic came over him as he subconsciously lifted a leg in her direction. However, before he could make his way over, Ji Yi suddenly turned around and left in a hurry.

His crappy mood instantly worsened. He silently stared at where Ji Yi had been standing for a while then without even buying the lighter, he turned around, pulled the car door open, and got in.

He ignored Lin Ya’s frantic slapping on his window and stepped hard on the gas, leaving her in the dust as he sped off.

Just as he was about to reach his house, He Jichen got a call from Han Zhifan inviting him to The Golden Lounge to play cards. He hadn’t decided if he was going or not, but he let out a non-committal “Mm” and hung up the phone.

As He Jichen was about to take a turn into the residential gates, he hesitated for a moment then turned the car around, heading for The Golden Lounge.

Playing cards made the time fly by. In the blink of an eye, the sky was already dark.

After He Jichen picked up a card in front of him, Han Zhifan glanced at his watch. It was already eight o’clock, so he turned his head around to look at He Jichen, who’d remained quiet from the start. He asked, “Want to go next door for some food?”

He Jichen knew that by “next door”, Han Zhifan meant China World Hotel, Beijing. His fingers nonchalantly rubbed the card, and after thinking it over, he gave a slight nod and got up to walk out of the room.

Han Zhifan hurriedly called the waiter for the bill, then picked up his jacket and swiftly chased after him.

After dinner, Han Zhifan pulled out a pack of cigarettes out of habit. He took out a cigarette and was about to put it to his lips when remembered He Jichen. Turning to him, he offered the cigarette to He Jichen. “Want one?”

He Jichen silently reached his arm out to take it.

Han Zhifan lit He Jichen’s cigarette first, then his own. While holding the cigarette with his lips, he slowly took a drag. He assumed He Jichen would silently hold his cigarette between his fingers, waiting for it to slowly burn to the end as he always did. Who knew that a second later, he would actually put it to his mouth and take a deep drag.

Having been classmates with He Jichen for four years, he knew more than anyone that he liked cigarettes but never smoked them.

Since three years ago, this was the second time seeing him take a big drag like this.

He Jichen’s odd behaviour stunned Han Zhifan. He then looked down at He Jichen’s plate and realized there wasn’t a single trace of oil. He realized that he might’ve been the only one who ate that night since He Jichen hadn’t even picked up his chopsticks.

Han Zhifan quickly released the smoke from his mouth and asked, “What’s up? Not in a good mood?”

Chapter 34: Let Her Leave (4)

Translator: Paperplane Editor: Caron_
He Jichen raised his hand and took a hard drag. Through the lingering smoke, he glanced at Han Zhifan, who had an indescribable look on his face.

“What’s up? Not happy at B-film?” Han Zhifan spoke again. At the mention of B-film, Han Zhifan continued, “I did tell you… You already got your bachelor’s degree from a prestigious university. They even wanted to send you to study at an American university, but in the end, you wasted so many years of your academic career to start over at B-film?”

“I really don’t know what to say. Can B-film even compete with prestigious schools? Can it compete with America?”

“In any case, if you’re bored of studying, it’d probably be easy for you to just become a CEO of a listed company with all your years in university!”

“Not to mention, even if you didn’t want to be some CEO, couldn’t you just go home and take over He Enterprises?”

“No matter which path you take, anything is surely better than coming to B-film to study from scratch?”

“I just don’t get it. Why did you give up your bright future and unbound glory and insist on starting again from scratch? Aren’t you wasting all your years of hard work and struggle?”

Given all the criticism, He Jichen wasn’t phased. Instead, Han Zhifan started to feel regretful on He Jichen’s behalf yet energized at the same time, “Say, just how depressed must you have been to make such a decision? Honestly speaking, I really do pity you. I’m not afraid of anything, but I’m scared you’ve given up far too much and you’ll come to regret it one day.”

He Jichen, who’d been quiet the whole time, showed no signs of wanting to talk.

After going on his monologue for so long, Han Zhifan paused for a moment. Then, as though something had clicked for him, he turned his head to He Jichen with some uncertainty and said, “Jichen, are you hiding something about why you came to B-film?”

“I’ve been your classmate for four years now, but I’ve never heard you say you’re interested in directing, so don’t give me that “it’s my dream” bull. Tell me straight up—are you here because of someone?”

He Jichen’s fingers trembled as he held the cigarette between them.

After a while, he drew the cigarette over to the ash tray and lightly tapped it. The ashes fluttered down.

Like a detective, Han Zhifan also recounted, “Every month during the four years in university, you made a trip to Beijing—did you go see someone?”

“A man or a woman?”

“Does that person have something to do with why you’ve come to to Beijing?”

“And this person, are they in B-film too—”

“Waiter, bill please!” After remaining quiet all night, He Jichen finally said his first words of the night.

“I can’t have possibly guessed right… right?”

When Han Zhifan finished speaking, He Jichen paid the bill, put out his cigarette and took off.

The Golden Lounge and China World Hotel, Beijing were so close to one another that the two of them simply walked between them.

When they reached the front doors of the Golden Lounge again, Han Zhifan pointed upstairs at the cards room that wasn’t empty yet, “Do you want to go up to play for a while?”

“I can’t; I have class tomorrow morning.”

Han Zhifan could tell that He Jichen really had no intention of going back up, so he said his goodbyes and walked up the stairs.

He Jichen stood at the front doors of the Golden Lounge for a while before going to the parking lot.

As he drove off, He Jichen headed towards the university.

The light from outside the window flashed across his handsome face. He stared straight ahead with a calm expression for the entire journey. It wasn’t until he drew closer to the university that he suddenly hit the brakes.

Chapter 89: He Wanted an Explanation

Translator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi-Bo Studio
Zhou Jingyun wanted to call Jiang Tong and ask her how she did it! However, Hong Tongfei was waiting downstairs. The company needed this spokesperson too much. As a businessman, Zhou Jingyun knew who was more important.

Zhou Jingyun brought people downstairs and saw Hong Tongfei surrounded by a group of people from afar. They were a group of young people who had just started work in the company. They were surrounding Hong Tongfei and asking for her autograph. Someone said, “The boss is here. Let’s go, let’s go.” The group of young employees dispersed like a flock of birds. They disappeared in a few seconds like mice seeing a cat.

Hong Tongfei turned her head to look at Zhou Jingyun. Zhou Jingyun happened to walk over as well. The two of them raised their hands at the same time.

“Hello, Miss Hong. It was an oversight on my part. I’ve been so busy these two days that I forgot to tell the front desk.” Zhou Jingyun smiled and shook hands with Hong Tongfei. Although he didn’t know why Jiang Tong didn’t tell him that Hong Tongfei was coming, Zhou Jingyun was sure that Hong Tongfei was sent here by Jiang Tong, so he had to be tactful with his words. He couldn’t let Hong Tongfei feel that they were disregarding her.

“You’re too polite, CEO Zhou. You are as handsome as the rumors say.” Hong Tongfei smiled and pandered to him. Although there was some sort of pleasantry compliment in her words, it was still more from the bottom of her heart. There were many handsome men and beautiful women in the entertainment industry. There were many people with stunning looks. However, not only was Zhou Jingyun handsome, but he also had the temperament and air of a son from a big and rich family. Just by standing in a spot, he could knock many people out.

Hearing Hong Tongfei’s words, Zhou Jingyun paused for a moment. Logically speaking, he should be pandering to Hong Tongfei now. After all, it was his company that needed help. With his company’s status, asking Hong Tongfei to be the spokesperson was indeed a little far-fetched. Zhou Jingyun was already prepared to be put in a difficult position by Hong Tongfei. But Hong Tongfei… why was her attitude a little strange? She was so amiable from the start and didn’t put on any airs at all. Zhou Jingyun wasn’t so naive to think that this was Hong Tongfei’s personality.

After exchanging a few pleasantries, Zhou Jingyun invited Hong Tongfei upstairs to his office for a detailed discussion. Along the way, Hong Tongfei saw that the corridor was filled with bodyguards, and the pressure in her heart suddenly increased. If it was just bodyguards then it wouldn’t put any pressure on Hong Tongfei. She also had many bodyguards, but she didn’t bring them out this time. She was here to discuss a collaboration, not to attend an event, so there weren’t so many people surrounding her. What put pressure on her was the power that Zhou Jingyun represented behind him. How powerful was he to have a bunch of bodyguards standing there while he worked!

Arriving at the CEO’s office, Zhou Jingyun thought that Hong Tongfei would bring her manager along, but she didn’t. Hong Tongfei came in alone. Talking about endorsements involved money and contracts, so it was impossible to settle it by herself. She needed her manager to be present to control the situation, so it would be easier for her to bargain. After all, celebrities thought highly of themselves and wouldn’t do anything to bargain. At this time, she needed her manager to appear, but Hong Tongfei didn’t even bring her manager with her. Zhou Jingyun didn’t know why.

“Miss Hong, please take a seat.” After Zhou Jingyun asked Hong Tongfei to sit down, he asked his secretary to bring in coffee. After the secretary left, only Zhou Jingyun and Hong Tongfei were left in the office.

Zhou Jingyun returned to his desk and sat down. He smiled and gestured for Hong Tongfei to wait for a moment. Then, he took out his phone and made a call. The call was to Jiang Tong. “Babe, Miss Hong is here. I’m letting you know first.” His tone was very doting, making it obvious that he was calling his girlfriend.

“Oh,” Jiang Tong replied indifferently.

Zhou Jingyun really wanted to ask Jiang Tong why she didn’t inform him in advance. Because Jiang Tong didn’t inform him in advance, Hong Tongfei was directly blocked at the front desk when she arrived. He almost didn’t even see her! However, because Hong Tongfei was present, Zhou Jingyun couldn’t say anything to question Jiang Tong. However, he knew that Jiang Tong understood the meaning of his call, but Jiang Tong actually replied indifferently! What kind of reply was ‘Oh’?! What he wanted was an explanation!

Zhou Jingyun’s brows twitched, and he pretended to listen attentively. He continued, “Okay, babe. I got to go.” After saying that, he naturally hung up the phone and pretended that he had just gotten off the phone with his girlfriend, and seemed to be in a very good mood.

“You always call your girlfriend, CEO Zhou? The two of you seem to be in a good relationship. That’s really enviable,” Hong Tongfei said flatteringly at the right time. She didn’t know if Zhou Jingyun was single or married. Before she came over, she only heard Jiao Qinglong say that this company was his sister’s boyfriend’s company. Jiao Qinglong didn’t tell her in detail, so he just told her to do well. Then, he left in a hurry as if he had something urgent.

Chapter 43: Don’t Ever Fall for Me
Translator: Atlas Studios Editor: Atlas Studios

“I dare. Are you up for it?”

“Until the very end.” An Xiaoning raised her chin. “How do we play?”

He got down from the bed and took out a box. When he returned, he sat opposite her and placed the box on the covers, asking, “Take a guess, what’s inside?”

An Xiaoning shook her head. “No idea.”

Jin Qingyan opened the box and explained, “This is a lie detector. We’ll use this as a tool for our game of truth or dare. Place your hand on it — if your answer to my question is a lie, you’ll be electrocuted. If it’s the truth, you won’t be. Let’s play scissors, paper, stone. The winner gets to ask first.”

Her whole life, An Xiaoning feared being electrocuted the most. The feeling of not knowing if she would be shocked was something that really strikes fear into her heart, but it was not like her to go back on her word.

Nevertheless, she braced herself for it. “Can anything be asked?”

“Of course. Ask anything you are curious about.” He positioned the lie detector properly and declared, “Okay — scissors, paper, stone.”

An Xiaoning played stone while he played scissors. She got to ask him first.

Jin Qingyan voluntarily put his hand on the detector and pressed the button. “Come on, ask me.”

“Marrying me, was it a decision you made willingly?

“Yes.”

The lie detector did not react. He took off his hand. “Your turn.”

An Xiaoning placed her hand on it. She could feel her heart racing like it was going to burst out of her chest anytime.

“How well do you think I perform as a husband… in that area?”

“…” She knew it. He was not going to pass up this opportunity to ask such questions — right as she had expected.

“Superior…”

Looking at the lie detector’s reaction, Jin Qingyan broke into a delighted grin that was as warm as the spring breeze. It showed all over his face until even his ears became the color of beetroot. It was obvious how satisfied he was with her answer.

Now it was An Xiaoning’s turn to question him. This time, An Xiaoning wanted to ask him something she already had a clear answer for. She wanted to ask him this, perhaps, to verify if her answer was accurate.

“If Chi Rui’er and I were to fall into the water, who would you save?”

His gaze started to shift slightly, but he still answered, “Chi Rui’er, because she can’t swim. You learned how to swim recently. If such a thing happened, I would save her first, then go and save you.”

For some reason, hearing this answer was like a stab in An Xiaoning’s heart. All the happiness she felt within her vanished. Yet, she already knew this was the likely answer — it was akin to asking him if he loved Chi Rui’er or her.

“My turn.” An Xiaoning voluntarily placed her hand on the device again.

“What position do you like?”

“Can I reject answering this question?”

“No.”

She really could not bear to answer this question, but seeing the countdown timer on the device, she still muttered, “From behind.”

The corner of Jin Qingyan’s lips curled into a faint smile, and he put his hand onto the device again.

“Do you think… I can make you fall for me in the future?” An Xiaoning was calm as she stared at him, expectantly waiting for his answer.

Jin Qingyan thought she would have asked questions related to his wealth, which was of interest to her, but little did he expect that all she’d ask were personal questions. He answered, “I think I might fall for you.”

Even though he said there was a possibility he might, the lie detector still reacted. His hand suddenly jerked intensely from the shock caused by the electric current. An Xiaoning looked at the device, feeling that it was such a great invention — a small machine like that could reveal the truth. It was indeed amazing.

“You lied.” An Xiaoning continued, “You said that you think you might fall for me, but you knew inside that you would never fall for me. I’m just your wife. It’s a mere position that has nothing to do with love.”

For the first time, Jin Qingyan saw a look of disappointment in her eyes. He suddenly regretted playing this game of truth or dare with her.

An Xiaoning noticed that his face was frozen. He looked extremely uncomfortable, so she assured him, “It’s okay. We never married out of love anyway. I already knew that.”

Jin Qingyan kept the lie detector into the box and said in a low voice, “Don’t ever fall for me. Let’s just be a married couple — I’m your husband, you’re my wife. Just as you said, it’s a marriage that has nothing to do with love.”

“But…” she replied with her head lowered, “you never said that explicitly when we got married. If you had said that, I wouldn’t have married you.”

She really meant what she said. She felt that love at first sight between two people was possible, but developing feelings over time was possible as well.

He knew that she was upset and that it was because of his answer, so he reached out to hug her. “Didn’t you want to discuss something with me? What is it about?”

“Oh, I forgot what I wanted to discuss with you.”

“When’s your birthday?” he suddenly asked, realizing he did not know when her birthday was.

“My foster parents never told me my birthday, but my Master told me: I was born on the fifteenth of July, according to the lunar calendar. She confirmed that this was definitely my birthday.”

“Fifteenth of July? Isn’t that the ghost festival?”

An Xiaoning did not want to continue this topic. “I’ve never celebrated my birthday. It’s as good as having none.”

“Do you want to find your birth parents? I can send someone to help you find them.”

“I don’t want to find them.” An Xiaoning went on, “No matter what difficulties they had, it was wrong of them to abandon me. If I were to have a child, I’ll either not give birth to it or raise it with my own hands. I would never give it away after giving birth to it.”

“…”

Jin Qingyan would have never expected that this game of truth or dare would become deeply etched in An Xiaoning’s heart. After he fell asleep, her eyes were still wide open, and she lay there not moving, looking out of the window.

She kept on reflecting on herself — why she had escaped from a horrible marriage only to enter into another marriage without love.

After thinking for a long time, she finally came to a conclusion: she was lacking love too much.

That was why she yearned for a good man to cherish and love her with all his heart.

It was also why she got married again hastily without considering carefully. This second marriage was merely more prestigious than her first one.

But both marriages were essentially the same.

For a period of time, Jin Qingyue no longer mentioned going abroad. Mrs. Jin felt something was rather strange and asked her, “Where have you been going every night? Why have you stopped talking about going abroad?”

Jin Qingyue pouted her lips. “Father, look at my Mother, she won’t allow me to go overseas, but when I stop talking about it, she thinks it’s strange.”

“Your Mother is mainly concerned about this: have you gotten yourself a boyfriend?”

Jin Qingyue found this a suitable time to tell her family and nodded, “I’ve indeed met a decent guy. He’s really nice to me, we’re still in the stage of getting to know each other.”

Her parents heard this and exchanged looks. Mrs. Jin questioned, “Who is he? What does his family do?”

“He’s still not ready to meet both of you. After some time, I’ll bring him home for you guys to see. Actually, he doesn’t even know my real identity — I’ve kept it a secret from him.”

Chapter 87: How Enviable
Translator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi-Bo Studio

Hearing that voice, Su Qianci turned and looked to the entrance of the ward. Qin Shuhua turned the light on, and Su Qianci immediately saw a girl in blue dress standing at the door. She looked a bit bashful with her eyes red and a shy smile, as if she did not dare to come inside. It was as if she had been wronged.

“How enviable!”

Qin Shuhua heard that and felt sorry again. She had thought that Tang Mengying would be her daughter-in-law, but destination was not fair.

Su Qianci immediately noticed that her mother-in-law was considering the other option again. In Su Qianci’s previous lifetime, Qin Shuhua was the one who most frequently compared her against Tang Mengying. Qin Shuhua would have always said that Tang Mengying was very capable and got a huge order for Li Sicheng’s company. Or that for a quiet child like Li Sicheng, a desirable wife should be someone who could handle conversations well. In a word, the fact that Tang Mengying was not Li Sicheng’s wife had made Qin Shuhua feel unfortunate. Every time Qin Shuhua saw Su Qianci or Tang Mengying, she could not stop sighing.

In her previous lifetime, Su Qianci would have said something that made Tang Mengying even more jealous. And now, she decided to do the same. Su Qianci nodded and smiled. “You will meet the one in the future. A girl like you should have many suitors. Unlike me, I had to follow my family’s instruction and did not even have a chance to choose for myself…”

She sounded like she was lamenting. However, Tang Mengying gritted her teeth. Su Qianci took the best one, and all the other guys became nothing. Su Qianci was obviously bragging!

Qin Shuhua took out the soup she had brought and glanced at Su Qianci. “Not having a chance to choose for yourself? Isn’t my son good enough?”

“Li Sicheng is fantastic.” Su Qianci smiled happily and said, “He is the best man in the world. Don’t you think, Tang Mengying?”

Tang Mengying forced a smile and answered, “Yes…”

Before she finished her sentence, Su Qianci turned her head and looked at the soup in Qin Shuhua’s hands, exclaiming, “Smells so good! Is our maid such a good cook?”

Su Qianci could immediately tell by her nose that Qin Shuhua had made it herself. She had had the opportunity to taste it a few times in her previous lifetime and was of course able to recognize it right away. However, she had never tried it in this lifetime. Qin Shuhua was overjoyed to hear her comment and said, “The maid has not started working yet. This is my work. Try it.”

Su Qianci was flattered and quickly took the bowl. “Thank you, mother.” She sipped some soup and gave a thumbs-up. “It is so good. I had no idea.”

Qin Shuhua was delighted and smiled happily, starting to talk about how she conquered her husband’s heart with her cooking skills. Su Qianci showed great interest and raised questions from time to time.

However, Tang Mengying was completely ignored. Clenching her fists, Tang Mengying stood behind Qin Shuhua and stared at Su Qianci with blatant hatred and jealousy.

Chapter 8: Chapter 8

The guard’s brows furrowed and sized up little Chu Qiao. Since when does the old master prefer girls that are not fully grown? he thought. Confused, he asked, “Who asked you to go there? Do you know the location of the old master’s outer quarters?”

“I have the address.” The child rummaged through her bag and took out a small piece of paper and started to point out the directions. She mumbled, “Once you exit the house, turn left at the third junction. Fu Xiang Restaurant would be right in front…”

“Okay,” the guard snapped in annoyance. “Who told you about it and why isn’t anyone bringing you there?”

The child replied honestly, “Lady Song told me all this. She was supposed to bring me there, but when we were crossing the stone bridge, she slipped and fell over, smashing the ice on the lake. I saw her drown. So I guess she can no longer bring me there.”

“What?” The guard gasped and grabbed Chu Qiao by her shoulders. He shouted, “Who did you say fell off the stone bridge?”

“Lady Song, the one in charge of the slaves in the backyard.”

With a tight slap, the guard’s palms landed forcefully on the child’s face. He raged, “You brat, why didn’t you tell me earlier? Come on guys, we have to rescue her!”

Chu Qiao fell to the ground with the blow, her ears ringing. Looking at everyone rushing out frantically, her lips waned and a heartless smirk emerged.

She would remember this slap.

Chu Qiao stood up in no time. Holding her bag in her hand, she walked towards the main gate without looking back. The gates were plated in gold and were enormous. A pair of ferocious stone lions stood at either side of the gate, with their eyes painted red, both radiating a vicious aura. The name of the Zhuge household was engraved on top of the door and was painted in sparkling gold, dazzling under the sun.

Chu Qiao walked with short strides and needed quite a bit of effort to climb over the sill. When she was halfway through the door, the sun shone brightly onto her and even the air seemed a whole lot fresher. From then on, her life would have a new start. The humiliation and pain she suffered, she would always remember it.

The child pressed her lips together and took a deep breath. Raising her leg, she began to step out of this rotten prison.

At this moment, a familiar piercing cry could be heard by the well to the right side of the front garden, followed by the horrendous wail of a child. The gates on the right side of the garden opened wide, and the dull thuds of planks landing on a child’s bared bodies filled the household.

The servants that walked by snuck gazes at the scene, wondering who was the person who had the “honor” of deserving that. Chu Qiao stood at the main gate and was extremely close to leaving this savage courtyard, but the continuous screams kept ringing in her ears.

Her brows tightly knit, she finally stopped shuffling forward. She turned and ran to her right.

Fate would always give people the opportunity to choose. A single step could make a worldly difference.

Zhuge Yue was dressed in light green clothes that were of the finest quality. There were several green lotuses stitched onto them and his black hair laid loosely on his back. His complexion was as white as jade and he had jet black eyes, his lips a shade darker than the rest. Although he was just thirteen to fourteen years old, he looked wicked and cold. With both his eyes half closed, it seemed that nothing was worthy of his gaze. He was as cold as the snow atop the peak of Long Dong Mountain during mid-winter. He lay on his side on a reddish gold cushioned seat, with both his arms behind his head. He had two female servants kneeling by his side, with incense in their hands, occasionally peeling fresh lychees for him that had been rushed over from the Tang Dynasty by their quickest horses.

Barely twenty steps before him, a child in the servant’s uniform was battered until her flesh was showing, her cries started to weaken. A little female servant who was only six to seven years old knelt at the side, repeatedly kowtowing and begging for forgiveness. Her forehead was already grazed and there was blood flowing down past her teary eyes.

The sun started to rise. The city of Zhen Huang was located in the Hong Chuan Highlands, and even though it was well into winter, the sun was still merciless. Zhuge Yue raised his head and frowned, squinting at the bright light. Seeing this, the two female servants frantically opened their umbrellas to cover his head. Zhuge Yue sat up straight and waved off the servants beside him, resting his back on his chair.

Two strong and burly men shuffled forward respectfully, taking up their positions in front and behind Zhuge Yue’s chair and lifting it, walking towards the door to the right.

The girl that was kowtowing for forgiveness gasped in shock. She frantically crawled forward and cried, tugging at Zhuge Yue’s clothes. “The fourth young master, please let Lin Xi go. He will not survive if you continue hitting him.”

Zhuge Yue raised his brows and lowered his gaze, looking at the girl’s blackened hands which were dripping with fresh blood.

The child felt an uncontrollable rush of coldness sweep through her body, freezing her mind. She saw five bloodstained fingerprints on Zhuge Yue’s white boots, strikingly obvious.

With a kick, one of the guards carrying the palanquin knocked the child to the floor. The two female servants rushed forward instantly, removing his dirtied boots. Zhuge Yue glanced at the child and turned back, looking emotionless throughout.

One of the female servants said coldly, “Cut off one of her hands.”

The child sat shell shocked on the ground, her cries stopping in an instant. Rushing over with rigor, a guard drew the sword by his waist, and a stream of blood spewed out. A tiny white hand had been chopped off!

Piercing screams shot out, startling the ferocious vultures circling the sky. The teenager sat comfortably in his chair, being silent, and closed his eyes as if he saw and heard nothing.

Chu Qiao stood in a daze at the door. As if she was carved from stone, her hurried footsteps stopped instantly. Her eyes widened and covered her mouth tightly. She froze in fear.

“Fourth young master, this child has stopped breathing.”

Zhuge Yue looked over at Lin Xi’s tiny body with a sweeping gaze. Rubbing his temples, he said cooly, “Throw him into the pond in the back and feed the fish.”

“Yes.”

The strong men raised the palanquin that Zhuge Yue was on, moving forward slowly. Everyone got on their knees when they passed, not even raising their heads.

“Wait,” Zhuge Yue suddenly whispered while passing the right gate. Turning his head, he gazed at Chu Qiao, who was glaring at him. He frowned and said, “Which house are you serving, slave? Why didn’t you kneel when you saw me?”

The morning breeze blew, blowing up specks of dust at the corners of the wall. Sunlight pierced their eyes like thousands of sharp needles. There were white birds soaring through the sky, flapping their wings which were as white as snow. Chu Qiao took a deep breath and bit her lip, suppressing her anger and pushing it down her throat inch by inch. She plopped onto the ground and looked straight towards the brick floor with her eyes open wide. With the voice of a child, she frantically said, “Yue Er is a slave in the backyard. May the fourth young master forgive my lack of knowledge. This is my first time seeing you, Young Master, and I thought I saw a fairy.”

Zhuge Yue’s expression calmed. He saw that the child was adorable and young, but not very good with her words. This aroused his interest and he continued asking, “How old are you? And what is your name?”

“Fourth young master, Yue Er is seven this year, and my surname is Jing.”

“Jing Yue Er?” Zhuge Yue said, “Change your name and follow me in the future. Let your name be… Xing Er.”

Chu Qiao instantly knelt on the ground and said loudly, “Xing Er thanks the fourth young master.”

Zhuge Yue retracted his gaze. His men lifted up his palanquin and turned around the corridor. They disappeared from view.

It was quite a lively finish, but there had been the death of a lowly slave. The men in the Zhuge household had already grown accustomed to this sight, parting ways without a word. A few cleaners lifted the child’s body and threw it into a sack, tying it up. They dragged it towards the lake in the backyard.

The child was still young. His bones had been completely broken, and fresh blood flowed out of the sack. Sticky drops of blood stained the brick floor, leaving a long trail behind.

Chu Qiao was still kneeling on the ground, with her back heaving up and down, her teeth clenched tightly onto her lower lip, as though they were weaved shellfish. She looked straight ahead, with her tiny fists clenched tight. Looking at the sack being dragged away before her, with glaring blood spreading all over the floor and covered in dust and dirt, a huge tear welled in her eyes and fell onto the back of her hand with a splash.

Sorrow and hatred surged through her, but she knew that she could not cry. She could not show even a tiny bit of resentment at this time. She wiped her face with the back of her hand and stood up quickly. At the spacious area beside the well, Xiao Qi had already lost consciousness, with blood spewing from her wrist, but no one cared.

Chu Qiao quickly tore her clothes and pressed Xiao Qi’s acupuncture points, wrapping up the wound to stop the bleeding with her superior techniques. After everything was done, she clenched her teeth and placed Xiao Qi on her back, walking towards the backyard.

When she set foot outside of the gate, a cold voice suddenly muttered, “Stop! Who gave you permission to carry her away?”

Chu Qiao looked up and saw Zhu Shun, the one that had locked her up for three days. She frowned and said with a calm tone, “The fourth young master didn’t say he wanted her killed.”

“Master also did not say where to place her.” Zhu Qiao glared at Chu Qiao and said coldly, “Speculating what is on the master’s mind on your own, you are looking for death. Men, take her down!”

Two servants came forward at once, reaching out to grab Chu Qiao’s arms. She scurried backward as she avoided their hands. When they struggled to grab her, Xiao Qi let out a grunt. The wound that was wrapped up started to bleed again.

“How dare you come near me! I am working at the fourth young master’s side. Do you want to be killed?”

Zhu Shun sneered and said, “You barely received any recognition, and yet you use it to command us. I don’t think the fourth young master will even remember your existence by tomorrow morning. How dare you use that to scare me?”

Chu Qiao picked at her brow. Carrying Xiao Qi, she retreated as though she was a leopard, sharpening her gaze while frowning. “Butler Zhu, I thought you were sending a message from my Royal Highness to Young Master Huai. Why are you badgering me with such affairs? You seem to be very free to me.”

Chapter 29: Thank You for Your Generosity (9)

Translator: Paperplane Editor: Caron_
Her reaction was so intense—was she afraid of everyone hearing the words she said next?

Ji Yi wasn’t a particularly virtuous person, but she never bothered anyone if they didn’t bother her. Since Lin Ya came looking for trouble, she wasn’t going to just idly sit around!

In the middle of the scuffle, the recording finished playing but Ji Yi wasn’t done. She rewound the recording a little and continued to play it.

“…I almost forgot, Xiao Yi. I’m not in the room next to yours anymore, I moved to room 1808….”

Ji Yi waited for Lin Ya’s words to completely finish playing before she refastened her watch onto her wrist. Then she nonchalantly raised her eyelids and stared coldly at Lin Ya. “I gave you a chance, but you didn’t want it!”

Lin Ya’s face was frighteningly pale as she bit down on her lips so hard that they turned blue. Despite this, Ji Yi didn’t hold back; in fact, she became even more swift and fierce like a queen, full of gloating. “Since you already know the big shot Ji Yi who joined B-film four years ago is no ordinary person, let me offer you a bit of advice: don’t mess with me!”

Ji Yi then turned right around and strode out in her high heels.

Bo He and Tang Huahua didn’t snap back to reality until Ji Yi stepped into the elevator.

The two of them glanced at Lin Ya, then they each found an excuse to leave.

All of a sudden, it was just the two of them—Lin Ya and He Jichen—left in the corridors.

Lin Ya lowered her head, a little afraid to look at He Jichen.

Actually, she never wanted to take on Ji Yi; she only planned tonight’s act because of He Jichen.

She was popular for being the most beautiful woman in B-film. There were so many guys lusting after her that they could form two rings around the school track, but her standards were too high. Not a single one of them caught her eye until she met He Jichen.

She had a friend from her hometown who studied in the directing program. It was because of him that she was able to meet He Jichen. From that point onwards, she often hung around her directing friend just so she could try to catch He Jichen’s eye, but he never paid any attention to her. It wasn’t until a month ago when she picked up Ji Yi’s call while in the middle of a conversation with her friend that it all started.

That day, they were eating at the canteen. She deliberately sat next to He Jichen, and when she cried “Ji Yi”, He Jichen turned his head and shot her a glance.

At the time, she thought the look was because she was a little too loud, but after that meal, he began to show up at different points in her day. She figured that she’d finally gotten his attention, so she was unbelievably happy inside.

Later, what made her even happier was when she went over to clean her plate that he came up to her and asked, “Classmate, can I get your number?”

In that very moment, she was ecstatic.

She tried her best to contain her excitement and tried to casually exchange numbers with him.

She often made the first move to contact him. He rarely replied so she assumed it was just because his personality was naturally distant.

Even though he didn’t explicitly express that he wanted to be with her, she didn’t clear things up when Tang Huahua and Bo He mistook them for being a couple.

Because she felt that they already were a couple.

Otherwise, why would he invite her to dinner and to parties?

Oh wait—he never really invited just me. Every time, he said the four words, “You and your roommates”…

But at the time, she was so overcome with happiness to be able to get closer to him that she didn’t notice anything wrong with his words.

That is, until the night of the outdoor party. When she came back from the party, Ji Yi told her that He Jichen had called the dorm room’s phone to look for her.

Chapter 30: Thank You for Your Generosity (10)

Translator: Paperplane Editor: Caron_
Although she used irrefutable arguments to dismiss Bo He’s suspicions then, she still had deep doubts in her heart.

When He Jichen called the dorm room, she was right next to him. Bo He and Tang Huahua were also with her, so was he looking for Ji Yi?

At times, a woman’s intuition is really accurate.

She had to admit, when she invited He Jichen out that weekend, she deliberately told He Jichen that Ji Yi was going to the hot springs too.

So when she unexpectedly saw He Jichen at the Peony Pavilion, she finally understood.

He Jichen wasn’t into her. He obviously wasn’t drunk in love with her, but Ji Yi.

And for over a month now, I’ve been foolishly used as a pawn.

How could I just take that? How could I?

Yet she didn’t want to lose face in front of He Jichen, so she plotted to ruin Ji Yi. She wanted Bo He and Tang Huahua to look down on her, and she wanted He Jichen to think she was a sly, calculative woman… so she put on that show tonight.

Lin Ya prepared well in advance for that night. She had been full of confidence, but she never imagined that Ji Yi would have a recording device on her.

In the end, she hadn’t ruined her target but ruined herself. Bo He and Huahua definitely looked down on her now, and as for He Jichen…

At that thought, Lin Ya’s fingers trembled. She carefully raised her head and looked up at He Jichen.

He was bending down to pick up her bag…

In that very moment, a sliver of hope surfaced Lin Ya’s ashen heart. If he’s doing this, does that mean he forgives me?

“He Dage, I…”

Before Lin Ya could finish, He Jichen straightened up, raised his hand and threw the bag at her face.

With that, an immense pain pierced Lin Ya’s heart. Her heart was instantly shattered.

He wasn’t helping me pick up my bag; he was giving me a taste of my own medicine by throwing the bag I just hurled at Ji Yi!

Tears instantly filled Lin Ya’s eyes. She turned her head and looked at He Jichen as she said, a little choked up, “He Da…”

She only managed to get those two words out before He Jichen took a step back into his room. It was as though he wasn’t willing to waste any more time with her. He slammed the door right in her face.

After their fight, Ji Yi wasn’t in the mood to spend the rest of the weekend at the hot spring resort, so the next morning, she sent Li Da, Bo He, and Tang Huahua each a text. She gave a weak excuse and returned home, back to the city.

Ji Yi didn’t go back to school dorms that night since she only had class the next morning. When she returned to school, she went straight to the classroom.

Lin Ya never showed up, even after the bell rang for class.

After class, when Bo He and Tang Huahua looked for Ji Yi to talk, Ji Yi learned that Lin Ya didn’t come back to the dorm room last night either.

In the following days, no matter in the classroom or the dorms, Lin Ya was nowhere to be found.

When the three of them—Ji Yi, Bo He, and Tanghuahua—finished class and went back to their dorm on Friday, Tang Huahua was just about to pull out her keys to unlock the door when someone from inside pulled the door open.

It was Lin Ya, who they hadn’t seen for a few days. She emerged from the room with a suitcase and walked out.

Chapter 31: Let Her Leave (1)

Translator: Paperplane Editor: Caron_
Bo He and Tang Huahua, who were loudly chatting away, instantly fell silent.

After a short while, Bo He and Tang Huahua greeted Lin Ya one after the other, “Xiao Ya.”

Lin Ya felt that something was off, so she raised her head and looked straight ahead. Her footsteps stopped in their tracks.

Lin Ya first saw Bo He who was right at the front, then she saw Tang Huahua. Her lips twitched as though she was going to greet them back, but before doing so, she saw Ji Yi behind them. Her face froze, and her eyes turned cold. Then without saying a word, she walked right around Bo He and dragged her suitcase on her way out without looking back.

When Lin Ya brushed past her, Ji Yi caught a glimpse of a bruise on her face.

Ji Yi couldn’t help but turn her head to look at Lin Ya’s face. Even with heavy makeup, Lin Ya’s bruise was still very obvious. Before Ji Yi could get a clear look at the bruise, Lin Ya already sensed her gaze. As though she had an electric shock, she quickly covered her face with her hand, then turned to shoot Ji Yi a fierce look. Her eyes were icy cold as she picked up the pace and quickly disappeared around the corner, going downstairs.

A long time passed since Ji Yi last saw Lin Ya.

If it weren’t for Lin Ya, Ji Yi would never have unexpectedly crossed paths with He Jichen again; He Jichen would never have appeared so often in her world. Now that Lin Ya disappeared from her life, He Jichen would completely disappear from her world as well.

Ji Yi wholeheartedly felt that this was great—she could go back to her uneventful but peaceful life like before.

As the days went by, fall was soon upon them. Just as Ji Yi had almost completely forgotten about He Jichen, she picked up some rumours about him.

It was a Thursday. After she finished dance class, she went back to the dorm room to find that Bo He and Tang Huahua seemed a little different. She furrowed her brows and casually asked, “What’s up?”

Tang Huahua and Bo He didn’t say a word. Without warning, their eyes were drawn towards Lin Ya’s bed.

Ji Yi also turned her head in the same direction and realized that Lin Ya’s bed was empty.

“Not only are the duvets gone but even the things on her table are gone,” said Bo He.

“Her cabinet’s unlocked, and it’s empty inside.” Tang Huahua added, “When Bo He and I got back, the stuff was already gone. She probably doesn’t want to see us, so she secretly came back on her own and moved out while we were in class. Looks like she really doesn’t plan on coming back to live with us.”

“However, Xiaoyang from the next dorm came by and said that she saw Lin Ya in the afternoon with a guy who helped pack her things. After they exchanged a few words, she found out that Lin Ya moved in with her boyfriend.”

Chapter 88: How Did She Do It?

Translator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi-Bo Studio
The receptionist lady at the front desk said excitedly, “Miss Hong, please wait a moment. There might be some misunderstanding. There were probably some issues when the secretary was giving us information. I’ll verify it for you right away.” As she said that, she picked up the phone at the front desk and paused for a moment. She looked at the company’s internal contact list on the table. There were a few numbers in bold font. They were the phone numbers of the company’s core executives. The top one was Zhou Jingyun himself!

Zhou Jingyun was currently in a meeting. It was a very important meeting! The receptionist thought for a moment, gritted her teeth, and dialed Zhou Jingyun’s phone number!

In Jingyun Fashion’s meeting room, more than 30 company executives were in a meeting. The heads of various departments, including marketing, public relations, personnel, finance, and business, were all present.

“There are only thirteen days left. There are only thirteen days left until the new product launch. I don’t care what methods you use, how you get it done, you must find the spokesperson for me!” Zhou Jingyun slammed the table with a cold face. “For this launch, the company has made all kinds of preparations from research and development to production. We spent two full years developing the new product. This is our hard work and it is about to be officially launched. If all our efforts are wasted, the company’s listing plan can only be delayed. The listed shares that I promised you can only be scrapped! The shares I’m giving you are much higher than the shares of other companies. I’m not giving you so much money for nothing. If you all can’t even do such a small thing well, what use do I have for all of you?!”

Up until now, Zhou Jingyun was really angry because all the senior executives had reported to him that no one had managed to contact a qualified spokesperson. Zhou Jingyun only asked them to contact a qualified spokesperson. The specific endorsement fees and endorsements would be discussed by Zhou Jingyun personally, but they couldn’t even handle such a small matter well! Although Zhou Jingyun knew that this matter wasn’t because his subordinates were incompetent and it was actually Shao Ying who was stirring things up behind the scenes, but… if the management company required the boss to personally resolve everything, then his subordinates who weren’t useless, would also grow to become useless! If there was a major problem in the company, they should think of a way to solve it together, and not leave it to Zhou Jingyun alone. He had to force them to bring out their fullest potential!

The meeting room was completely silent. All the executives did not dare to breathe loudly.

“Are you all mute? Say something!” Zhou Jingyun slapped the table.

“If you lower your standards for the spokesperson…” a middle-aged man sitting on Zhou Jingyun’s right coughed lightly and spoke cautiously. Under such circumstances, it was already not easy for him to dare to stand up and speak. However, because he was one of the first batch of people from the Zhou family to assist Zhou Jingyun in starting his own business, the middle-aged man dared to stand up and speak. Before he could finish speaking, someone’s phone rang.

The people in the meeting room looked at each other. Who would dare not turn off their phones in such a meeting? Of course, it was… Zhou Jingyun himself. Zhou Jingyun took out his phone to take a look and then frowned. If it was someone else who called, he might have directly hung up, but this call was from the front desk of the company. Since the front desk dared to call him, it meant that it was a very important matter.

“Speak.” Zhou Jingyun directly picked up the call.

“Boss, Miss Hong Tongfei is here. She even said that she had an appointment with you.” The front desk lady lowered her voice and told Zhou Jingyun about the situation.

“Are you sure?” Zhou Jingyun was somewhat in disbelief.

“I’m sure. She’s waiting in the reception area,” the front desk lady answered affirmatively.

“I’ll be right down. Ask Miss Hong to wait for a moment.” Zhou Jingyun hung up the phone and took a deep breath to suppress the excitement in his heart. He looked at the quiet meeting room and said directly, “Meeting adjourned!”

All the executives were stunned and looked at Zhou Jingyun without moving. Why was the meeting suddenly adjourned? Zhou Jingyun didn’t explain anything and walked straight out of the meeting room. His secretary and assistant naturally followed behind him. After leaving the meeting room, Zhou Jingyun’s mind was a mess. Why did Hong Tongfei really come? Did Jiang Tong find her? It hadn’t even been a day, and she already brought her here? How did Jiang Tong do it? What did she do yesterday? Wasn’t she playing games all the time? In the afternoon, she even went with Zhou Mingfei to transfer the villa to her name. How could it be…

Zhou Jingyun knew about Zhou Mingfei transferring the villa to Jiang Tong. After Zhou Mingfei transferred the villa to Jiang Tong, he called Zhou Jingyun. Although Zhou Jingyun was going to see Hong Tongfei now because Hong Tongfei was a very important spokesperson for the company, Zhou Jingyun’s mind was filled with thoughts about Jiang Tong!

Chapter 87: No Appointment

Translator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi-Bo Studio
The management of the Huanyu Building was very strict. There were two ways to go upstairs. One was to swipe the card or go up the stairs. For example, if a delivery person wanted to go up, they had to go up the stairs. Unless the visitor had informed them beforehand, the procedures to go upstairs were the same. However, even if an important visitor came to the building, one of the property management staff would at most swipe the elevator card for them. They would not accompany the visitor, not to mention that the property manager himself would personally escort the visitor. To the company, the visitor might be an important guest. However, to the property manager, the visitor was just an ordinary person and he had no relations with the visitor. Therefore, Jingyun Fashion’s receptionist was very confused.

“Miss Hong, please.” The property manager brought the woman to the front desk.

“May I know who you are looking for?” The front desk lady revealed a professional and polite smile.

“I have an appointment with your president, President Zhou.” The mysterious woman did not take off her mask, but her voice was still clear. The reason she did not take off her mask was not that she was impolite, but rather, she did not want to attract attention. When she went upstairs earlier, she thought that Jingyun Fashion had informed the property management of her visit and she could go upstairs directly. She did not expect that there was no record of it at the property management office, so she had to take off her mask to reveal her identity. This even caused some commotion in the office and caused the property manager to personally accompany her upstairs. After that, she put on her mask again. She did not want to be recognized again, causing unnecessary trouble and wasting time.

“Appointment…” the receptionist started to look at the records. If it was a guest that Zhou Jingyun had arranged in advance, there would definitely be records at the front desk.

“My surname is Hong,” the mysterious woman said again.

The receptionist knew what the woman’s surname was because the property manager had just said it when he came over. However, after she flipped through several pages, she straightened her body and looked at the woman in confusion. “I’m sorry, Miss Hong. I didn’t find your appointment record. Why don’t you contact President Zhou to confirm it?” It was a very formal answer. The front desk always said the same thing to visitors who did not have an appointment. This way, they would not offend people, and if there was a problem, it was not the front desk’s fault.

“No record?” The woman was puzzled. It was strange. She was suddenly informed to fly back from abroad and only arrived in City Z after more than ten hours of flying. She thought that Jiao Qinglong had called her back to pick up the endorsement this time because he was helping a friend. However, after she returned, Jiao Qinglong repeatedly reminded her, and it could even be said to be a warning from him. He said that the other party was the eldest son of the Zhou family. He told her to be polite, to understand the rules, and to fully cooperate with the other party regarding the endorsement deal. She should also accept whatever endorsement fee was offered. There was no need to haggle or anything like that. Hong Tongfei and Jiao Qinglong had been together for so many years. She could also feel that if she messed up this matter, Jiao Qinglong would not let her off. She also knew that the other party was a big shot, and she absolutely could not offend him, so she was careful and cautious. However, what was going on now? She did not even have an appointment? It was fine if the property management office was not informed in advance, but even Jingyun Fashion’s front desk?

“Miss Hong, why don’t you go to the reception area first?” The receptionist lady was also very perceptive. Seeing that Hong Tongfei seemed to be in a difficult position, she politely said, “Our CEO is currently having an early morning meeting, so he might not be able to receive your call. Please wait for a moment, and I will inform you immediately after I have verified it.” The receptionist lady could not call Zhou Jingyun directly. She could at most ask Zhou Jingyun’s secretary. She had met quite a few noblemen in this job, and she could feel that this woman dressed mysteriously wasn’t an ordinary person. Therefore, the receptionist could go and ask the higher-ups, but not now. Now that all the company’s higher-ups were having a meeting in the conference room, so she didn’t dare to disturb them at all.

“Alright then.” Hong Tongfei hesitated for a moment. Then, she followed the receptionist’s instructions and walked toward the reception area. She stopped after a few steps, then quickly walked back. “Please confirm it again.” As she spoke, she took off her sunglasses and smiled sweetly at the receptionist. “Do you know me? I really made an appointment with CEO Zhou in advance.” The reason why she took off her sunglasses was that she was afraid there would be some misunderstanding. What if there was no response from Zhou Jingyun’s side and they delayed Jiao Qinglong’s matter in the end? She couldn’t bear the consequences.

The receptionist was stunned. Of course, she knew this face. This was the famous movie star Hong Tongfei! The lady at the front desk immediately thought that Hong Tongfei’s arrival might have something to do with the company’s spokesperson. Yesterday, Zhou Jingyun threw a huge tantrum at the company because his original spokesperson had gotten into a car accident. He had been in meetings all afternoon, and the matter of mobilizing all the company staff to find a new spokesperson had spread throughout the company, so… Hong Tongfei’s appearance was very likely to have been contacted by someone in the company. No one knew who had reached out to her. This was too awesome! However, why was there no appointment record…

Chapter 42: Are You Game Enough?
Translator: Atlas Studios Editor: Atlas Studios

She stuck a hand out to flag down a taxi. Unexpectedly, her stepfather got into the back seat.

When the car reached the entrance of Wei Ni Estate, Chi Rui’er intended to stop the security officer from allowing him in. But before they even went in, her stepfather remarked haughtily, “The man you’re with now is called Jin Qingyan right? When I see him later, I’ll tell him about us.”

“What exactly do you want?” Chi Rui’er scowled at him. “Why on earth are you being so shameless!”

“I’ve already told you, you better not provoke me. I have nothing but a mouth that has no qualms about saying anything at all.”

Chi Rui’er finally went back to her own home.

Her stepfather flashed a gloating smile, knowing he had gotten his way.

The moment the door closed, Chi Rui’er was forcefully held from behind by him. She kicked her legs while struggling to break free. “You bastard, let go of me!”

She turned her head and took a huge bite on his arm, then continued to bite it desperately. Immediately after, her body was thrown back and landed heavily on the floor. Chi Rui’er only felt her brain was being blown. Everything before her eyes went blurry, and then she lost consciousness.

“…”

“…”

“…”

When she woke up, she realized that she was lying naked on the bed. Her clothes were all over the floor, and her stepfather was nowhere in sight.

Thinking that it was Jin Qingyan’s birthday and that even Chi Rui’er had bought a present for him, she felt that as his wife, she had to have some form of expression.

An Xiaoning wrote Jin Qingyan a handwritten letter at the store, then went out to the streets when it was 6 o’clock.

She bought a watch that was rather costly, then brought it home.

When she saw his car at home, An Xiaoning placed the gift in her own bag and got off the car, carrying her bag.

He was sitting before the dining table getting ready to eat. Seeing her return, he called out, “Come and eat.”

An Xiaoning went forward and was not in a rush to present her gift. She sat down and started to eat.

“Auntie Chen, do you have some chilli sauce and fermented bean curd?”

“Yes, give me a moment, Young Mistress, I’ll get it for you this minute.”

A moment later, Jin Qingyan saw her scooping out a tablespoon of chilli sauce and a piece of fermented bean curd, mixing them together with her rice. Then she placed a big spoonful of it into her mouth. Her expression and the way she was devouring it showed she was enjoying it so much.

He simply could not understand it at all.

“Mixing them all together, I’ve lost my appetite just looking at it.”

An Xiaoning shrugged her shoulders. “Why is that? As long as it tastes good, isn’t that good enough? Whatever we eat comes out afterwards anyway.”

The rice he was about to swallow immediately stopped at his throat. He murmured, “We’re eating, can’t you say something nicer.”

An Xiaoning grinned. “I don’t have nice words but plenty of awful things to say.”

“Nothing good comes out from a filthy mouth.” He reached out for his handkerchief to wipe his mouth.

An Xiaoning lowered her head and ate heartily, saying after she was done, “Today’s your birthday, I’ve a surprise for you.”

“What surprise?” For some reason, he was vaguely expectant.

“Come up after 20 minutes, I need to prepare upstairs. Watch your watch okay, come up only after 20 minutes,” she instructed and went upstairs.

She turned on the air-conditioning and washed her hair and body briefly. By then, 10 minutes had already passed.

An Xiaoning blew her hair dry and took her time to retrieve a piece of bright red scarf made of genuine silk from the dressing room clothes rack. It was a piece of very long scarf which looked stunning.

She used the back of her hand to wind the scarf from her back to the front of her chest, until it had wound up around her thighs. Then she ended by tying a butterfly knot.

After the 20 minutes were up, he came up from downstairs. Actually, since she had gone up, Jin Qingyan continued to look at his watch regularly, feeling like 20 minutes were as long as two years.

When it was finally time for him to go up, he went up eagerly. As the door opened, his eyes almost popped out. What his wife was wearing aroused his attention completely.

He entered the room.

An Xiaoning turned on the sound system and relaxing music started to play.

She fluttered gracefully as she danced to the music. In front of him, her moves were elegant and she was especially charismatic.

With such beautiful moves, it was impossible for one to take their eyes off her.

He actually never knew that she was such a great dancer.

This An Xiaoning before him was bold and confident.

She was someone who dared to reveal her beauty in front of her husband.

At this point, the music stopped and so did her dance.

The red scarf wrapped around her fell off and landed on her feet.

Jin Qingyan swallowed the lump in his throat and spoke in a slightly husky voice, “Thank you for taking time to prepare this gift for me, I like it very much.”

He carried An Xiaoning in his arms and threw her onto the bed. Right after, he went down on her like a violent storm.

After it was over, she rubbed her aching back as she got off the bed to retrieve the box containing the watch and passed it to him. “Here.”

He received it and opened the box — it was a very decent watch which was branded.

“You chose it for me?”

“What do you think of it?”

“Not bad.” He wore it on his wrist to try. It looked good. “Since my wife chose it for me, I’ll keep wearing it in the future.”

An Xiaoning then passed her handwritten letter to him. It was written on red paper and folded into the shape of a heart.

He was suddenly in high spirits and opened it expectantly, while An Xiaoning crept into the covers and covered her face. For some reason, she felt a bit embarrassed. She had not felt that way when she wrote it, only now after she had given it to him.

“My dear husband, when I was in my worst state, we became a family. Ever since we got married, I treated you as my closest family. But now, I realize that some of the things you do are hard for me to understand and are even upsetting. I hope you can do something to change in the future. Also, please continue to look out for me for the rest of our lives. From your wife, An Xiaoning.” He read the whole letter out. At this point, An Xiaoning — who was under the covers — found it even more embarrassing to look at him.

“Tonight, you gave me a wonderful surprise indeed. Well, how should I reward you?” His voice was smooth and pleasant, and he had a wide grin on his face.

She pulled back the covers and replied, “Money would be great. I would be too ashamed to ask for anything else.”

“How are you able to utter such words so easily?”

“Well, using my mouth.” She did not think that she was being shameless at all.

Jin Qingyan reached out his fingers and smacked her head lightly. “You’re someone who’s already in your twenties, why do you still act like a young girl.”

“It’s your eyes that are bad, I am still a young girl.” An Xiaoning reached out her palm. “I thought you wanted to reward me? Five hundred thousand is enough.”

He was straightforward about it and immediately wrote a cheque of five hundred thousand for her. “Here.”

An Xiaoning received it with joy and placed it into her own bag, saying calmly as she lay down on the bed, “The atmosphere is great right now, I hope that the topic I want to discuss with you next won’t ruin it.”

“Let’s leave the topic for later and play a game now,” he suggested. “Do you dare to play truth or dare with me?”

“Shouldn’t I ask you this question instead?”

She had no secrets to hide, why would she be afraid of his questions? In reality, she had underestimated him too much.

Chapter 41: As Long as She Was Willing
Translator: Atlas Studios Editor: Atlas Studios

The initially half-drunk An Xiaoning felt her entire body stiffen. She soon sobered up completely.

The dining table was like a battlefield that afternoon on which they kept at it for a little less than an hour before finally calling it a day.

An Xiaoning’s legs felt like jelly, so much so that she almost fell when she tried to get down from the table.

Glowering at Jin Qingyan, she slowly made her way upstairs.

Jin Qingyan then proceeded to clear up some of the mess and ordered Auntie Chen to prepare some broth to sober the others up.

All energized and rejuvenated, he eased himself onto the couch and began reading newspapers as if nothing had happened at all.

An Xiaoning took a hot bath, changed into a fresh set of clothes, and put on some light makeup. She then headed downstairs, only to discover that everyone had already come to.

Mei Yangyang and Long Tianze had sat up straight against the couch. They appeared to be rather groggy still.

Chi Rui’er sipped on the tea Auntie Chen had brought her.

“Yangyang, let’s return to the store,” said An Xiaoning.

“What store? You’ve been going out early and returning home late recently. What have you been busy with?” asked Jin Qingyan.

“I’ve opened a store. I’ll get going,” answered An Xiaoning as she left together with Mei Yangyang.

“Tsk, seriously what kind of husband are you? You’re not even aware of what your wife has been doing out there,” mocked Long Tianze.

“I’ll be aware of whatever she does only if she chooses to tell me about it. I have to leave for the office,” said Jin Qingyan as he put on his suit.

One after another, everyone stood up and left through the door. Jin Qingyue stopped Chi Rui’er in her tracks and said, “I’ll give you a lift.”

Chi Rui’er nodded in response. She had initially planned to hail a cab, but since Jin Qingyue had offered her a ride, she did not see a reason to turn her down.

“Where do you live?”

“Wei Ni Estate,” answered Chi Rui’er.

“Why are you putting up at my brother’s estate?” asked a surprised Jin Qingyue, who could not believe her ears.

“It’s only temporary.”

“Tell me the truth, what’s between you and my brother now? I heard you broke up with Gu Beicheng.”

“We’ve broken up for quite some time now. I’m just friends with your brother. Now that he’s married, what else can there be between us?” answered Chi Rui’er with a smile.

“That can’t be. If you two are just friends, why would my brother be willing to let you put up there? Even my sister-in-law had never stayed there before. Besides, divorce is rampant and only normal in today’s society. To be honest, I’m aware of my brother’s feelings towards you all these years. It was rather dubious of you to gift him with a shirt for his birthday today. It was such a meticulous gift. Didn’t you see how upset my sister-in-law was?” scoffed Jin Qingyue.

“I didn’t know what to get your brother since he already has everything he needs. Thus, I decided to just buy him something he’d like. In hindsight, it was indeed a little inappropriate,” said Chi Rui’er, lowering her head.

“I can tell my sister-in-law doesn’t fancy seeing you. She didn’t even speak to you when you were there, did she? My sister-in-law’s really something, though. My brother wouldn’t have married her otherwise,” Jin Qingyue chuckled.

Chi Rui’er asked hesitantly, “Why is she something?”

“Didn’t you know? My sister-in-law is capable of fortune-telling, and her readings are pretty accurate. My Mother and Grandma like her a lot, which is why she could marry my brother so easily. How else would that’ve been possible?” answered Jin Qingyue. Although she had addressed An Xiaoning as her sister-in-law, she actually completely disregarded the latter, deep down.

“I’ve heard about that from your brother. I don’t have such abilities, though,” said Chi Rui’er.

Before long, they had arrived at the entrance of the mansion in Wei Ni Estate. “Thank you for the lift home,” said Chi Rui’er.

Jin Qingyue waved her goodbye. “No problem, bye.”

Chi Rui’er waved back at her as she alighted.

The moment she turned around, the initial smile on her face faded substantially.

After changing into her home slippers, she plonked herself onto the couch and ordered, “Bring me a cup of tea.”

The helper then hurriedly brought a cup of tea as instructed and placed it onto the coffee table while Chi Rui’er leaned against the couch. “What’s the big deal with being able to tell fortunes?” she snorted with contempt after an entire day of suppressing her displeasure.

She whipped out her mobile phone and sent Jin Qingyan a text message to invite him over for dinner. However, he had rejected her tactfully, with the excuse of having to spend the evening with his wife at home.

Chi Rui’er grew into an uncontrollable rage and cast her mobile phone aside angrily. At that very moment, she herself became convinced that they were indeed nothing more than just friends, that he had an actual wife.

But she knew that he loved her. An Xiaoning would lose her place instantly as long as she was willing to marry him.

Then again, she did not want to tell Jin Qingyan directly and ask for him to get a divorce with An Xiaoning. It would make her seem like a homewrecker.

Was there any way to cause them to get a divorce, without coming off as a shameless and unrefined woman? she thought.

Chi Rui’er sunk deep into her thoughts, bombarding herself with a bunch of questions.

The sound of a text message notification could be heard coming from her mobile phone. Thinking that it was a text from Jin Qingyan, she hurriedly picked up her phone, only to realize that it was from her stepfather instead.

She opened the text message, which read: Your Mother wants to see you, she wants you home .

She quickly proceeded to call her mother, who was indeed at home. Chi Rui’er then swiftly got up, changed out of her slippers, and made her way back home in the Northern suburbs.

By the time she arrived home, her mother had already prepared a spread of homemade dumplings on the dining table.

“Your mother made you some dumplings because she missed you. You haven’t been home in so long, yet you don’t even bother dropping by for a visit,” said her stepfather, smiling benevolently.

She did not bother answering him, however. “Mom, how has your health been lately?” she asked as she sat next to her mother.

“Great, everything had been fine, with your father taking care of me.” Handing Chi Rui’er a pair of chopsticks, her mother said, “The dumplings are made with your favorite filling. Here, have some before they turn cold.”

She took the pair of chopsticks from her mother and began digging in.

What a familiar taste it was. If it weren’t for her Mother’s request, the last thing Chi Rui’er would want to do is to step foot into that house. In fact, she had planned to leave together with her mother. However, she decided not to in the end and thus did not inform her mother of the reason. Instead, she just let the matter drag on.

After finishing the dumplings, she sat next to her mother and chatted with her until the latter was tired. Chi Rui’er then informed them that she was leaving.

“You’ve made it all the way back here, why don’t you just stay the night?” said her stepfather, trying to stop her.

“Nah.” She insisted on leaving.

“Let your father send you,” said her mother.

“It’s fine,” she answered as she picked up her bag hurriedly and left through the door.

Little did she expect for her stepfather to chase after her.

Chi Rui’er picked up her pace and made it in time for the public bus. She quickly boarded, unaware that her stepfather had tagged along.

He sat right next to her and stared at her sideways.

Just as she was about to make a call, he grabbed her by her hand and said with a mellow voice, “Rui’er, you’re all grown up and independent now. But Father isn’t old and muddle-headed just yet. If you continue to be so rebellious, I’m going to have to punish you.”

Glaring daggers at him, she warned, “If you keep being like this, I’m going to tell Mom about it.”

“It’s up to you to say whatever you want. I’ll just remind you, your mother is plagued with a heart disease, she might just get a heart attack and pass on upon hearing what you have to say. If you’d like that to happen, it’s fine by me too. At least I’ll be without a burden.”

Chi Rui’er felt helpless and as if there was nothing she could do. She cocked her head towards the window and ignored him for the rest of the journey.

After alighting from the bus, Wei Ni Estate was still quite a distance away from where she was. Thus, she had to take another detour bus before she could arrive home. At that moment, she instantly regretted turning down the offer for a ride home.

Chapter 86: Like a Dream
Translator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi-Bo Studio

Her lips were tender and sweet like Jell-O. The moment he touched her lips, Li Sicheng felt shocked by electricity. His heart suddenly raced like crazy. It was not the first time, as he had kissed her several times before. But why did he suddenly feel this way for her?

So seductive… Li Sicheng’s eyes became dark and held her tighter. Not noticing any difference, Su Qianci slowly licked his lips. Gentle and terrified, she made her move quietly…

That was enough. She would just pretend that everything was real. However, she had no idea that the man was turned on and decided to take the initiative. Su Qianci was shocked, staring at him. He… He moved?

Freeze! Freeze now!

However, it did not work. Li Sicheng locked her hands down and kissed her hard. His tongue sliding into her teeth with strong lust and desire, hard and heavy and relentless.

Su Qianci stared, her eyes wide, but her heart suddenly racing. This was real? This was not a dream? Oh my god, she kissed him! However, why didn’t he get mad? And why did he kiss her back?

Su Qianci had a crazy idea, but she rejected it herself. It was impossible…

Noticing her absentmindedness, Li Sicheng’s eyes became darker as he commanded, “Close your eyes.”

Su Qianci’s heart skipped a beat and she suddenly blushed.

Ahhhhh! It is real!

It was not a dream? She was not in a dream. Her heart trembling, Su Qianci felt incredulous. His breath became more rapid and her eyes became wet. She moved her hand up and hugged him back. Noticing her obedience, Li Sicheng felt himself incredibly hard.

Take her!

Li Sicheng was startled by his own crazy idea. He warned himself to retreat, but it was so hard.

“Ahem!”

The sudden noise made Su Qianci freeze and push him away. She turned her head and saw Qin Shuhua standing at the door with a smile. She blamed Li Sicheng. “Qianci is still quite weak!”

Although Su Qianci knew that Qin Shuhua was just teasing, Su Qianci could not help blushing and looking at Li Sicheng. She found that he was as calm as always, although a bit flushed himself as well. Li Sicheng suddenly stood up. Seeing the dried blood stain on his shirt, Su Qianci was a bit surprised.

“I’m off to work. Mom, take care of Su Qianci.”

Qin Shuhua smiled and nodded. “Go, I will give a pretty wife back to you.”

Li Sicheng blushed a bit more and quickly left the ward.

“You look great together,” said a gentle voice behind Qin Shuhua.

Chapter 85: Kissing Him on the Lips
Translator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi-Bo Studio

Su Qianci stared at him like a lifeless doll.

Li Sicheng frowned and wondered whether she had become dumb, when the woman suddenly reached for his face. His skin felt smooth and cold. His gorgeous features right in front of her eyes. He was real, and so close to her…

It was not a dream. It was really Li Sicheng! However, didn’t he hate her? Why…

Su Qianci was dazed, subconsciously reaching for her lower stomach.

Seeing her movement, Li Sicheng frowned and asked, “Who told you?” Didn’t they agree that she should not be told? “Drink some water!” Li Sicheng sat next to her, not taking any argument.

Su Qianci drank some of the lukewarm water but felt even more shocked. Her heart was incredibly sore. Tears fell like rain.

Li Sicheng took the glass in her hand away and held her in his arms. As she leaned against him, Li Sicheng clearly felt something blooming in his heart. Su Qianci couldn’t help bursting into tears, her shoulders shivering. “Child, our child is gone…”

His heart wrenched, Li Sicheng held her tighter. He patted on her back and whispered, “No tears. We’re still young and can have another baby.”

Su Qianci heard that and cried even harder. They were indeed young, but they would never have another baby. He hated her so much, so how could she bear his child again? He would wish her to stay away from him so that he could spend the rest of his life with Tang Mengying.

However, at this moment, she wanted to believe him very much. To believe that he was not just trying to comfort her and be nice, but meant what he said. She would just pretend that he did not hate her. And let the time stay for a while.

Li Sicheng slowly patted her on the back, his heart a mess. “Don’t cry.”

Su Qianci could not stop her tears but stopped sobbing. She looked up at his flawless face.

Li Sicheng looked down at her, his voice deep. “If you cry, you would not look pretty. Look at your eyes.”

“You said I’m pretty?” Su Qianci was dazed and muttered.

Seeing that she had stopped crying, Li Sicheng was relieved and nodded. “That’s right.”

Su Qianci looked at him as if she had seen a ghost. He had never called her pretty. She must be in a realistic dream? Looking around, it was all dark. Indeed, no matter how real it felt, it was still a dream. She would not believe that… someday Li Sicheng would treat her nicely.

She smiled bitterly, feeling sorry. However, since it was a dream, could she do something that she had always wanted to do but never dared to? Su Qianci held his waist tight and called, “Li Sicheng.”

“Yes?”

Su Qianci looked up, putting one arm around his neck and kissed him on the lips while he looked at her incredulously.

Chapter 7: Chapter 7
Translator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi-Bo Studio

In the middle of their conversation, a piercing scream was heard outside, followed by a high-pitched voice that roared, “Good job you pathetic slaves. How dare you steal? Don’t you want to live?”

Lin Xi frowned and took a step towards the door. Zhi Xiang pulled her back and whispered, “Leave from the back door, quick! No one can see you here. The fourth young master will kill you.”

“I…”

“Leave, quick!”

No one could believe that such a dilapidated hut would have a back door to it. When Lin Xi pushed open the door, Zhi Xiang held her arm and said very seriously, “No matter what happens, don’t come back.” After which she rushed out of the door.

Cries of pain and the cracks of the whip sounded simultaneously. A woman with a fat belly swung her arms and roared viciously, “Weren’t these the daughters of the wealthy Jing family back in the day? Who could have imagined they would stoop down to this state today. Your sisters are whores on Shi Hua Lane, and here you are being thieves. What a family of despicable scum.”

“Lady Song, we know that we were wrong. We won’t dare do it again.” Zhi Xiang put herself between the woman and children, suffering lashes to her face and covering it with wounds and blood. She kneeled and pulled at the edge of the woman’s skirt, crying for forgiveness. “We won’t dare do it again.”

“Finally realized your mistake? You guys seem to have a better memory after being whipped.”

The lashes of the whip landed mercilessly on the bodies of the children. Xiao Qi, whose hair was tied into two ponytails, had already been injured and could no longer stand the pain. After a few lashes, her eyes rolled back into her head and she passed out. The other children instantly started to wail, but the woman was enjoying herself, striking harder with each hit. With a cry, she raised her whip once again.

There was a swoosh, but no cries were heard. Lady Song looked down to see a little girl with tattered clothes in front of her. Though she was skinny, her gaze was cold and stern. Her blackened hands were tightly grabbing onto the other end of the whip. She said with a deadly tone, “Enough.”

Lady Song raged and howled, “Hey girl, are you looking for trouble?”

“Yue Er, Yue Er, release your hand!” Zhi Xiang crawled over and tugged at Chu Qiao’s clothes. She cried and said, “Quickly, beg Lady Song for forgiveness!”

Chu Qiao did not waver and continued glowering at the woman. With a chilly tone, she said, “Try hitting them one more time.”

Lady Song raised her eyebrows and roared, “I won’t hit them, I’ll hit you!” After finishing her sentence, she raised her whip and swung it with all her might. Chu Qiao laughed mockingly, grabbed the woman’s belt, and tripped her, causing her fat body to land heavily on the ground.

Cries of cheer erupted from the children as Chu Qiao sauntered over to the woman. She bent down and smirked, “Not coming back to complain?”

Lady Song sprung to her feet and shouted, “Just you wait!” Then, she sprinted out of the yard.

Zhi Xiang ran forward worriedly, her anxiousness causing tears to pool in her eyes. She said, “Yue Er, you’ve caused a big problem. What do we do now?”

“Look after them,” she instructed and ran out after the woman.

She had already memorized the route when she was being brought to the hut. After turning two corners, she saw the woman hurriedly running across the stone bridge. Due to her immense size, she started to pant after just a short distance.

Chu Qiao crouched down in the bushes. She surveyed her surroundings carefully, checking that the coast was clear. She picked up a stone and squinted, aiming the stone right at the woman before throwing it with all her might.

With a thud, the stone landed forcefully onto Lady Song’s ankle. With a surprised cry, she slipped and fell off the bridge.

It was already the middle of winter, and the surface of the lake was covered with a thick layer of ice. Her fall did not shatter it, causing her to lay spread eagle on top of it, where she moaned in agony.

Chu Qiao emerged from the bushes and walked leisurely towards the bridge, looking down to where the woman was lying. She yelled, “Hey, do you need me to get help?”

The woman turned and her tone instantly changed. In a friendly tone, she said, “Good girl. Would you quickly get help for me? This hurts so badly.”

Chu Qiao laughed. With a bright smile, she bent down and picked up a massive rock, lifting it over her head with all her might.

Seeing that, the woman’s face paled. She stuttered, “You… what are you doing?”

Not allowing the woman to cry for help, she released her hands and the massive rock smashed the layer of ice, cracking it instantly. With a cry of shock, the woman was engulfed in the icy water, sinking to the bottom of the lake and leaving merely a few bubbles on the surface.

Chu Qiao stood on the bridge, looking calm and composed with an unchanging expression.

This was a savage world. To survive, a person had to eliminate their predators in one fell swoop.

Without a tinge of regret, she turned and retraced her steps. As she stepped into the yard, the children rushed towards her, all wounded and teary-eyed. Chu Qiao reached out to embrace Xiao Qi, who had just regained consciousness and was right in front of her. With a deep breath, she whispered, “Don’t be afraid, everything is fine now.”

In this slave yard, which housed the lowest class of slaves of the Zhuge household, the young female slaves lived the lives of animals. They could no longer hold back their tears, crying their sorrows away.

When dinnertime came, the granny that was in charge of the Jing family’s children ordered them to work. Even the wounded children like Xiao Qi and Zhi Xiang had to. Only Chu Qiao and Xiao Ba, who had injured his waist and was fast asleep, remained in the hut. It was not until midnight that the other children returned exhausted from work. After finishing their dinner, the children obediently climbed into bed. Zhi Xiang crouched at the side of the bed-stove, adding firewood to keep the fire burning. The scars on her face were red and swollen, as though they were tiny snakes.

There was pin drop silence within the hut, and soon the slow breaths of children in deep sleep filled the room. Dressed in the clothes that Zhi Xiang had just given her, she sat up and whispered, “If you do not treat the wounds on your face, there will be scars.”

The flames within the bed-stove glowed, brightening her face. She was so skinny, making her eyes seem bigger and darker. She raised her head and said, “Yue Er, slaves aren’t supposed to use medicine. The last time Xiao Qi secretly used the medicine Lin Xi brought, we did not know the risk that we were taking. If it had been discovered, everyone could have lost their lives. We can’t mess around with the wounds on my face.”

While saying that, a sound was heard from above the stove. Both of them turned their heads, and realized that it was Xiao Qi who had kicked away her blanket in her sleep. Zhi Xiang rushed forward and covered Xiao Qi with her blanket. Wiping the sweat from her forehead, she returned to man the fire.

Chu Qiao looked at Zhi Xiang and her lips trembled, but she did not say a word. This child was barely ten years old but had to shoulder such huge responsibilities. All the children in this hut were between five to ten years old. Why would the wealthy Zhuge family need so many children of this age?

“Sister Zhi Xiang,” Chu Qiao whispered while getting off the bed-stove. Sitting beside Zhi Xiang, she continued, “Have you been to Jiang Nan?”

“Jiang Nan?” Zhi Xiang’s brows furrowed. “Where is Jiang Nan?”

“Do you know where the Yellow Mountain is? Or the Yangtze River?”

Zhi Xiang shook her head and answered, “I know that on the west bank of the Hong River lies the Hong Mountain, and beneath the Hong Mountain there is the Cang Li River. Yue Er, why do you ask?”

Chu Qiao seemed to be in a daze and was deep in thought for a while. She shook her head and said, “It’s nothing, I just wanted to ask. Oh, by the way, Sister Zhi Xiang, do you know who the current emperor is?”

“The emperor is the emperor. How could we call the emperor by his name? But I do know that the Royal Highness that is always dressed in black and frequents the Zhuge household is the emperor’s seventh son, Zhao Che. He is the youngest prince in the Xia Empire to be named king.”

That cold emotionless appearance with a scornful expression flashed through her mind. Her eyes narrowed and she repeated, “Zhao Che?”

“Yue Er, what happened to you? You seemed weird when you returned. What did you say to Lady Song? How could she let us off just like that?”

Chu Qiao turned and grinned. She said, “I’m fine, don’t worry. Lady Song did not let us off, but she fell into the icy lake and drowned. I saw her drowning with my own eyes. Regarding the matter of Lady Song coming here, do not mention it to anyone.”

“She died?” Zhi Xiang gasped as her face paled.

Chu Qiao covered her mouth quickly, looking around. Seeing that none of the children had woken up, she said seriously, “No one knows about this except for you and me. Don’t tell anyone else. She has an evil heart, so there are plenty of reasons for her to die. But she is already dead, and you need not worry anymore.”

“Yue… Yue Er,” Zhi Xiang stuttered. “You… you did not kill her, right? She fell into the lake by herself, right? Her… her son is the consular guard of the court. We cannot afford to offend him.”

Chu Qiao laughed and pointed to herself. “Do you think I would be capable of killing her? Okay, you have to stop thinking so much. She committed so many bad deeds that even if no one killed her, God would have taken it into his own hands. You’ve had a tiring day. You should rest.”

Zhi Xiang shook her head furiously. “No, I have to keep the fire going.”

“I can do it. I’m injured and can laze around tomorrow. Go and rest.”

Chu Qiao sat quietly on a small stool, adding firewood once into a while into the fire. The flames crackled while they burned, illuminating her face with a bright red glow. She raised her head to look at the children in the hut, and her heart ached. Such a pity, but what could she do? She had mysteriously been brought to this era and was trapped in the tiny body of Jing Yue Er, losing all her martial arts skills and being of such a lowly class. She could barely take care of herself, how could she take care of others? The things she had done today were to return the favor of Lin Xi delivering food to her for the past three days. After this, she had to leave immediately.

Chu Qiao gradually closed her eyes. She knew that whatever she did, there would always be a limit to her capabilities. But in her current state, she did not have the ability to shoulder such a huge burden.

The rooster cried as dawn broke. The Jing family children woke up on time and put on their servant’s clothes, preparing for the rest of the day.

Although she had lost her well-trained skills, she was still clear minded. Chu Qiao was no longer the super agent from the 9th operational division, but she had still gone through professional military training. The Zhuge household was vast with many people living in it, but for a tiny eight-year-old child with exceptional logical reasoning and a concept of space, it still seemed like a defenseless playground.

Within half an hour, she crept out of the slave yard and walked towards the front garden. Its defenses began to grow more stringent, and guards armed with knives could be seen patrolling the grounds. The Zhuge family was not an ordinary household, as Zhuge Huai could call Zhao Jue, Zhao Che, and the other members of the royal family his brothers.

Standing tall, her small body looked like a tiny tree. Chu Qiao straightened her clothes and stepped out with confidence.

“Stop! Are you looking for trouble? Do you think this a place where you can roam around wherever you like?”

A tall soldier with a large figure walked up to her, his face chubby and overweight. Chu Qiao froze in her steps and looked up, her fair, cute features coupled with dark, watery eyes. She said in a sugary tone, “Oh, elder brother, I have orders from the old master to go to his outer quarters. From what I heard, if I’m not there within the hour, they’ll kill me.”

Fate had pushed her into the ditch, she told herself. She had to climb out.

This terrible predicament did not give her any chances to be full of remorse or to be anxious. If she did not pull herself together, she might not be able to survive the night.

She raised her blackened hands and picked up a wooden stick, slowly starting to write on the ground.

Zhuge, Wei, Mu, Jue, Che. At this word, her brows started to furrow. It started to darken outside, and the woodwind instruments playing within the palace grounds could be heard. Among the rustling, waves of laughter could also be heard. She silently recollected her thoughts for awhile and finally penned down the last word: Yan.

In the main hall of the Zhuge palace, everyone was toasting each other. Yan Xun’s right eye twitched all of a sudden. He scrunched up his beautiful brows and turned slowly, gazing deep into the complete darkness.

The night was pitch black. With jackdaws soaring high in the sky, this turbid and ugly empire was rotten from the core.

The old was destined to be destroyed, with the new order coming in its place, rising from the ashes.

Even with the wounds on her body hurting terribly, Chu Qiao still forced herself to stand up and run rounds around the small firewood room, occasionally stopping to use her hands to massage her skin in case she froze to death in this dilapidated hut.

The drum signifying that it was 3 a.m. rung, and a window that was around the height of a person was being pushed open. Then, a small head popped into view. Chu Qiao was stunned. Raising her head, she saw a pair of bright eyes carefully check the surroundings of the room. After seeing Chu Qiao, a look of happiness flashed through his gaze. He held his index finger to his lips, asking her to not make a sound. He then nimbly jumped into the hut.

The boy quickly ran towards her, opening his arms, and pulled Chu Qiao into his arms. He choked a little, but comforted her with determination, “Yue Er, don’t be scared, the fifth brother is here.”

The boy was skinny and was not very old either. He looked like he was between eight and nine years old. He was wearing gray field clothes that did not fit him very well, making him seem skinnier than he already was. His stature was not fully grown and was merely half a head taller than Chu Qiao. However, his facial features and outlines seemed to have endured many hardships. He held the child tightly in his arms and patted her back, continuously repeating, “Don’t be scared, the fifth brother is here.”

Unknowingly, Chu Qiao’s eyes filled with tears. Beads of tears rolled uncontrollably down her face, soaking his rough clothes. She did not know whether it was her body’s natural reaction or her own true emotions, but in this strange, foreign, and cold night, this frail but warm hug was too precious.

The bright, clear moonlight shown through the slightly opened window, shining on the small bodies of the children. Within the cold four walls, the only little warmth came from the heart. The boy’s small body was like a tough mountain. In this frigid night, even though he might have been shuddering in fear, he still hugged his sister firmly, holding her tightly in his arms.

“Yue Er, are you hungry?” The boy released her from his hug and carefully wiped off the tears on Chu Qiao’s face with his blackened fingers. He smiled and said with glee, “Guess what brother brought you?”

The boy took out a little cloth bag from the back and sat down on the floor, neatly opening the bag. The aroma of the food drifted into the air instantly. He lifted his head to see that Chu Qiao was still standing and was puzzled. Raising his brows, he said, “Sit down.”

It was a coarse porcelain bowl with the blue and white decorations on the side already discolored from rubbing, and there were a few tiny holes at the mouth of the bowl. It was filled to the brim with rice, along with vegetables piled on top of it. There was not much oil, but its aroma was just as good. The boy took a pair of chopsticks and wedged them into Chu Qiao’s hands, rushing, “Quick, eat.”

Chu Qiao lowered her head and shoved her mouth full of rice. All she tasted was saltiness, due to the taste of her tears. Her throat was choked but she continued munching like a robot, occasionally sobbing in tears.

The boy looked straight at Chu Qiao. Every time she opened her mouth, he would open his too, as if he was teaching her how to eat. When she swallowed her food, he would grin from ear to ear, causing his eyes to turn into slits.

As her chopsticks were fiddling in the bowl, they poked into something. Picking it up, it was actually a piece of braised pork that was still warm.

That piece of meat was the size of a thumb and was a little burnt on the side. It was half fatty and half lean, but in a dark cold night like this, it was so tempting.

A noise suddenly rumbled. Chu Qiao raised her head from the bowl, looked towards the boy, and saw that he was awkwardly rubbing his tummy. Purposely putting on a nonchalant front, he said, “I just finished dinner, I’m not hungry.”

Chu Qiao passed the chopsticks over and said,”You have it.”

The boy shook his head instantly. “Our dinner today was especially good. The fourth young master allowed us to add dishes. Braised fish, sweet and sour ribs, vinegar fried pork, steamed duck, there were so many dishes. I ate so much I may throw up, I don’t think I can have any more food.”

Chu Qiao stubbornly raised her chopsticks and said, “I don’t like to eat fatty pork.”

The boy remained dazed for a while, looked at Chu Qiao, then diverted his gaze onto the piece of braised pork. He unknowingly swallowed his saliva. After a while, he finally reached for the chopsticks she offered, and carefully bit off the fatty portion of the meat. He then passed the lean pork back to Chu Qiao. Laughing in glee, revealing his row of white teeth, he said, “Yue Er, now you can eat.”

A pang of emotions hit her and she hurriedly lowered her head. Tears swirled in her eyes, but she managed to hold them in.

After a while, she raised her head slowly and smiled at the boy. She opened her mouth and devoured that piece of meat, munching and grinning at the same time.

“Yue Er, is it delicious?” His eyes shone as if they were stars in the galaxy.

Chu Qiao nodded furiously. She was all choked up, but she managed to say, “It’s delicious. The most delicious thing I’ve tasted in my life is this piece of meat.”

“Silly girl.” The boy reached out and patted her head. With a tinge of sadness in his expression, he said,”How old are you to say things like ‘in my life’? We don’t need to talk about the future, just when we were young. We have savored many expensive foods, but you were still too young to remember a thing. But don’t you worry. One day, the fifth brother will let you eat and dress well, and bring you delicacies from all around the world. Not only braised pork, but also ginseng, abalone, bird’s nest, shark’s fin, and clams. Whatever you want, you will have it. Until then, no one will think of bullying us. Yue Er, do you believe me?”

Chu Qiao nodded and continued shoving rice into her mouth. Although it was not very delicious, the warmth it gave was tremendous.

“Yue Er, don’t be scared.” While saying this, the boy took off his jacket and draped it onto Chu Qiao’s shoulders. With a warm tone, he annotated his words very clearly and said, “Fifth brother will protect you and will be here accompanying you. Don’t be afraid.”

As the moonlight shone clear and bright, the light shone through the gaps into the firewood hut as dazzling white light. Like frost under the moonlight, the children’s small bodies laid closely together, seemingly small, but so very warm.

The flames of light flooded the area from afar, woodwind instruments playing to their heart’s content and the aroma of meat and drinks filling the air. The nightless city of Zhen Huang had finally ushered in the climax of tonight’s banquet. Under the brilliant lights, no one remembered the little girl that had survived the onslaught in the arena. The cold air billowed, causing the flag with the flame insignia of the Xia Empire to whistle in the wind.

When she woke up the next day, the boy was no longer here. On the floor, he had left a message in his neat handwriting: The fifth brother will be back tonight. There are buns beneath the firewood.

Chu Qiao pulled away the dried twigs and saw two slightly yellowish buns wrapped in a piece of oil paper. She held them tightly and looked calm, but her gaze started to warm.

Like this, three days passed with no one questioning her condition. The boy continued to visit her daily, bringing along food and accompanying her, then leaving silently the next day. On the third day, the door to the hut banged open. Zhu Shun looked down at Zhu Qiao, who had remained alive after three days in the firewood hut, furrowing his brows tighter and tighter. At last, he ordered his men to release her.

When she stepped out of the hut, Chu Qiao stopped at the door. Taking one last look at this dilapidated hut, pressing her lips together, she turned with a look of determination.

As she walked forward, the hut seemed increasingly worn-out. A huge bunch of kids could be seen hiding behind the trees, sneakily watching her. When she reached the yard, with the men taking their leave, the crowd of kids rushed towards her, pulling her into their arms.

“Little sixth, you are back!”

“The sixth sister, I thought you were never coming back.”

“Sister Yue Er, wuuuuuuu…”

The children started chattering all at once. Some wailed outloud, scaring Chu Qiao a little, who stood there in a daze with the children surrounding her as she tolerated the snot and tears from these little kids.

“Okay, stop crying.”

A male voice was heard, turning the heads of all the children, causing them to cry out, “The fifth brother!”

A boy ran in from outside, hugging a cloth bag. In two steps, he dropped its contents onto the floor. It was a bag full of melon seeds. Upon seeing it, the children cheered and let go of Chu Qiao in unison, running to the seeds.

“Don’t snatch them. This is enough for everyone,” the boy said maturely. He continued, “Yue Er just escaped death and was severely wounded. Don’t disturb her. Everyone has to help her complete her job for the next few days.”

The children nodded. A girl with two ponytails and pale, soft features raised her head. She smiled and said, “Don’t worry the fifth brother, we will definitely help the sixth sister.”

The boy continued, “Xiao Qi, has your injury recovered? Why are you out of bed?”

“Fifth brother, it has recovered already.” The child smiled as he rolled up his sleeves, revealing black and blue scars from a whipping. Some areas still revealed his flesh and were nowhere near recovered. Xiao Qi said gleefully, “The medicine you gave me was very useful. It was painless once I applied it. Xiao Ba was kicked in the waist by the horse while she was feeding them, I’ve got to help her.”

“Lin Xi, come in, I have things to say to you.” A young girl scuttled forward suddenly, holding the boy’s hand.

He turned and looked at Chu Qiao. He said, “Yue Er, the wind is quite strong outside. Come inside too.”

In the small and dilapidated house, there was a large bed-stove, with more than ten blankets folded neatly on top of it. A boy named Lin Xi chirped, “Sister Zhi Xiang, you were looking for me?”

Zhi Xiang was not much older, looking around ten years old. She crouched down and opened the bed-stove from below, revealing its pitch black interior and pulling out a small box. She said, “In five days, it will be the anniversary of our parents and relatives’ deaths. The incense and joss paper you wanted us to secretly prepare are all here.”

Lin Xi nodded and said with a cautious tone, “Be careful, don’t let the manager know about this.”

“Yes, don’t worry. No one will come over to us. But for you, when you are taking care of the fourth young master, you have to be careful. The day before yesterday, I heard from Si Tao from the laundry room that the third young master has already killed two reading partners in his room. Even though the fourth young master is not like him, his weird character is unpredictable. When the master is not around, Young Master Huai does not bother with the happenings within the household. They are getting more and more ill-disciplined. The old master has already killed more than twenty young female slaves. The ones that were sold to the Du family together with us have all perished. I’m really worried that this fate would befall us as well.”

The wolf howled and darted to a corner, obviously heavily injured.

“Come here! All of you, come here!” she shouted while she bent down and picked up two stones, hitting them together. With a spark, the hay caught fire with a roar. The child lit her rod on fire and raised the torch. She ran all over the arena, chasing away the pack of wolves that was attacking the children. While doing that, she continued shouting, “All of you, come here! All of you, come here!”

Children of all ages ran towards Jing Yue Er as they wailed, all of them injured. Some were bitten by wolves, some were shot by arrows. After the onslaught, there were barely twenty children left alive.

The pack of wolves were afraid of fire. Looking at Jing Yue Er protecting them from the middle, they tarried and dared not to inch forward. They had been hungry for too long. Seeing that their prey was now protected, they ran back to the bodies that lay in the arena, devouring all that they could.

Zhuge Huai’s long and narrow eyes squinted at this sight and murmured, “Useless animals.” He pulled his bow and started shooting at the wolves.

Sharp arrows flew towards the pack, attacking them unknowingly. The wolves howled in pain, collapsing onto the floor and in no time, they were all dead.

The children that survived were overjoyed. Ignoring the wounds on their body, they cheered loudly.

However, even before their cheers could be heard, another wave of arrows rained down on them, piercing through their small bodies.

The empire’s aristocratic descendants shot ruthlessly with their sharp eyesight. Unsympathetically, they aimed right at the children in front of them with bloodthirsty arrows coming in for the kill.

An arrow swooshed through the air coming at a frightening speed, shooting through a child’s head with a thud, entering through her left eye and coming out from the back of her head, stopping right in front of Jing Yue Er’s nose. Warm blood splattered all over her face and she opened her mouth. With the burning rod being held tightly in her grip, she froze. The cries of children reverberated to the sides of her ears. It was all like a nightmare.

The arrows started to lessen as Prince Wei and Mu Yun laughed in unison. Both pulled back their bows, took aim right at the girl, and released an arrow, letting them speed through the air.

Zhao Jue frowned and steered his horse forward. Reaching for his quiver, he realized that he only had one arrow left. With a cold groan, he snapped the arrow in half and put them on his bow. With a skilled shot, he shot both arrows, shooting the arrows shot by Prince Wei and Mu Yun out of the sky.

Zhuge Huai laughed and commented, “Good shooting skills!”

Finishing his sentence, all cries stopped and the northern wind swept through the snowy arena, blowing the stench of blood along with it. The arena was covered in red and the only child surviving was Jing Yue Er. Her hair strewn all over her head, with hay stuck within it, her clothes dyed red and a pale expression. She held the wooden rod and did not move an inch. She looked over with a stunned gaze as if she was in shock.

Zhao Jue said, “The seventh brother is still the best. I have no more arrows left. I think you will be the winner today.”

Prince Wei raised his brows, looked at his quiver, then Mu Yun’s, and finally turned towards Zhuge Huai.

Zhuge Huai smiled smartly and said, “I was out of arrows long ago.”

“Yan Shizi still has some arrows, doesn’t he? The time is not up. Whose hand the deer will die under is still unknown,” Mu Yun said all of a sudden.

All gazes fell on Yan Xun.

Zhao Jue looked coldly at Yan Xun and said without emotion, “Yan Shizi is known for giving everyone surprises at unsuspecting times.”

The joss stick was only burnt halfway through, but everyone else had already used up their arrows. There was only one snowy white-feathered arrow lying in Yan Xun’s quiver.

Yan Xun sat stately on his horse. Although he was only thirteen, his back was strong and straight, with dashing eyebrows and sparkling eyes. His nose was sharp and had a piercing gaze. The neatly pressed clothes he wore, distinguishing him from the crowd, made him seem handsome but cold. With his cold expression, he nudged his horse forward and drew his bow, aiming at the child standing right in the middle of the arena.

Gusts of wind swooshed by, blowing up the child’s tattered clothes and messy hair. She was still very young, not older than six or seven years, looking malnourished and ghastly, like a hairless little wolf that had just been given birth. Her arms, neck, and calves were covered in wounds, and the wound on her shoulder was near her artery. She stood in the middle of the messy Xiu Luo Arena, with dismembered limbs strewn everywhere, fresh blood flowing from bodies, and the stench of blood filling the air. The strength of cruelty was like the spirit of hopelessness, tearing at the delicate eyes of the child.

A glistening bloodthirsty arrow slowly took aim at the child’s throat. The teenager sat stately on the back of his horse. With his sharp gaze and brows furrowed, the veins on his arms bulged while he pulled back his bow.

There was nowhere she could hide. Disorganized thoughts were rushing through her mind, so many queries and mysteries vanishing under the sudden onslaught. She slowly raised her head. Her gaze extremely cold, radiating an immense amount of hate and resentment, she glared at the teenagers in front of her without the slightest fear.

That day, it was year 770, the 4th day in the first month of the Bai Cang calendar. The people of Zhen Huang had just celebrated New Year’s Day. In the royal hunting arena on the outskirts of Zhen Huang City, it was the first time he and she met.

Time went through the path of history, tearing open the gates of time and space. Two souls that were never destined to meet had been placed on the same platform.

Yan Xun knitted his brows. Moving his fingers a little, he let go of the arrow.

The long arrow shot out, moving the cold air, as it soared through the air. All gazes concentrated and fell onto the child that was rooted to the spot.

With a swoosh, the line of blood lengthened as the sharp arrow grazed the neck of the child, cutting her. Her figure wobbled a little, but continued standing after staggering for a few steps.

“Ha ha! Congratulations seventh brother!” Zhao Jue laughed.

Zhao Che glanced scornfully at Yan Xun and smirked, “Yan Shizi has been spending all his time on song, dance, and poetry. Did he forget how the ancestors of the Zhao clan held a bow?”

Yan Xun put down his longbow and turned. With a bland tone, he said, “How the ancestors of the Zhao Clan held the bow, it would already be enough if their descendants remembered. I wouldn’t dare to meddle in your family’s affairs.”

Zhuge Huai let out a huge laugh and said, “Since everyone is here, I guess the winner of this competition is his Seventh Royal Highness. I have dinner prepared for all of you at my house. Let’s go and have drinks at my place.”

All of them agreed and climbed up onto their horses together, as if all that had happened was just a game that could not be more ordinary.

A huge gust of wind blew past, whipping up the robes of these men, the stench of the wind filling the vast snowy plains. From afar, Yan Xun turned back, looking at the child covered in blood and filth. She had been standing in the middle of the plains after all this while, her deep gaze looking in their direction, fixated for a long while.

The sky gradually darkened. With the northern winds howling past, the piercing cold chilled them to the marrow. The wind whipped up snow on the ground while moaning like a crazed beast.

The men from the Zhuge family were clearing up the arena, shoveling up those young, tiny bodies, throwing them into a cart behind them. Not far away, there was a medium sized ditch that was dug out, with wormwood crackling in flames within the ditch, thick smoke billowing from it. It was used to bury those children, along with those bloodthirsty beasts. These lives were worthless, as if they were balls. Their rich owners would play with them only once and grow tired of them, hence throwing them out.

Jing Yue Er had a torn sack draped over her, and her head hung low in silence, sitting quietly beside the cages. She was seriously injured, but even if had she been a grown man, it would have been hard to suffer the immense pain in total silence.

The men from the Zhuge family thought that she would die soon, but even after a long while, they noticed that her chest was still rising and falling, albeit very little. They knew that she was alive due to her breathing and that an unknown source of strength was still supporting this child even though she was so close to death. Hence, they did not throw her into the mass burial ditch. Instead, they put her back into the cage when they left.

The cage that was initially packed with children suddenly seemed spacious. All the children were dead, only one had survived. As the men were amazed at the child’s luck, they could not hold back the urge to turn back and survey her with caution.

Even though they could not find the words to describe it, they acutely sensed that the child, compared to when she had arrived, had changed.

The home of the Zhuges occupied a vast space. They entered through the back door and Zhu Shun placed Jing Yue Er under the care of two workers. After giving them a few instructions, they took one last cold look at her, turned their bodies and left.

With a click, a lock on one of the rooms was opened. Jing Yue Er was pushed into it. The door was locked shut before she could even pick herself up.

It was pitch black within the four walls, with a pile of firewood that was bunched together. One could still hear the rustle of rats scuttling through the room. The child did not yell in horror. She sat in the middle of the room, taking off the sack that was draped over her shoulders. Using her teeth to secure one end of the sack, she started tearing pieces of cloth off the sack, wrapping the wounds on her body with intense concentration, her techniques surprisingly well practiced.

Such a long time was enough for the qualified agent to calm her nerves, using careful thinking and a calm demeanor to tackle anything that came her way, even if the circumstances were unbelievable.

Indeed, Jing Yue Er of that time was Major Chu Qiao, assistant commander of the 11th division, who had sacrificed her life for her nation. Fate, at many times, could be as unbelievable as this. Under an abyss may not be hiding certain death, but perhaps the path to a new life.

Chu Qiao raised her arms. Using the light that was outside, she looked at her small palm. A tinge of sadness could be felt at the bottom of her heart, but she was unaware as to whether she was sad for herself or this pitiful child.

“There is no one here. I can allow myself to be sad and afraid, but I have to shorten this time as much as possible.”

The child murmured to herself as tears streamed down, flowing across her filthy, skinny face. Hugging her knees, she lowered her head, nestling it between her arms. Silently, her back started to shudder.

This was the first night Chu Qiao spent in the Xia Empire, in the cold, well circulated firewood hut of the Zhuge household. It was the first time she cried helplessly because she was weak and afraid. She gave herself an hour to curse her fate, reminisce her past, worry about her future, and to adapt to her new life. After an hour, she would no longer be Chu Qiao, the super commander of the 11th division, but instead, a young and helpless female child slave with nothing, struggling to survive in this inhumane, bloodthirsty, and chaotic empire.

Chapter 25: Thank You for Your Generosity (5)

When Tang Huahua heard Bo He put it that way, she immediately nodded along. “Right right right, maybe they knew each other long before.”

Lin Ya’s eyes smiled and she continued to look as soft as gently rippling waters. “Nope. I asked Xiao Yi before; she and He Dage never knew each other. Xiao told me they didn’t know each other and that she never really paid much attention to He Dage.”

Bo He and Tang Huahua didn’t know quite what to say after being countered like that.

Even if Ji Yi had just a vague idea as to what was going on before, she now completely understood what Lin Ya was thinking at that very moment.

She clearly ran to her for help and lured her, one step at a time, into He Jichen’s room. Now she was pretending like she didn’t know why she was there, and she even cut off Bo He’s attempt at smoothing things out. Lin Ya was actually set on pinning her to the reputation of her “seducing a best friend’s boyfriend”…

“Lin Ya, don’t you know why I’m here?” asked Ji Yi in a calm voice as she looked into Lin Ya’s eyes.

Lin Ya was obviously going to pretend to be ignorant till the very end. She widened her eyes and asked with a bewildered look on her face, “Xiao Yi, what do you mean by that? How would I know why you’re there?”

“You don’t? Didn’t you come running to tell me that you’re on your period and that I should pick up some pads for you? You even told me you changed to room 1808 and asked me to drop them off here!” As Ji Yi said this, she tilted her head and glanced over at He Jichen and said, “The pads are on the coffee table in the room.”

To see if what Ji Yi said was true, Bo He peered over at the room then politely asked He Jichen, “May I come in to have a quick peek?” With He Jichen’s slight nod, Bo He ran right into the room.

“So there really is…” Soon enough, Bo He brought the pack of pads back. With the evidence, Bo He asked, “Xiao Ya, was what Xiao Yi said true?”

Lin Ya didn’t reply to Bo He but stared at the pack of pads in disbelief. Her eyes looked like they were practically going to fall out. After a while, she raised her head and stared at Ji Yi in disbelief, “Xiao Yi, why did you do that? I didn’t ask you to buy me anything.”

The rims of her eyes turned red as though she’d just been wronged. She looked over at Bo He and Tang Huahua for help. “Bo He, Huahua, you know I sat in the hot spring all night. If I really was on my period, why would I be there…”

“What’s more, Bo He, I had my last period at the same time as you…” Lin Ya was so flustered that she asked twice, “Bo He, do you still remember? Remember?”

Bo He glanced over at Ji Yi in hesitation but after a while, she eventually nodded.

“Look, Bo He nodded. I’m not on my period, so why would I ask you to help me buy them? Xiao Yi, why did you try to lie and embarrass me?” As Lin Ya said this, she turned around like she just realized something. “Xiao Yi, did you use me as an excuse because you wanted to visit He Dage but didn’t have a reason to be here?”

Chapter 26: Thank You for Your Generosity (6)

“Yeah. Yeah, it must be that…” Lin Ya nodded fervently and looked at Bo He and Tang Huahua like she was recruiting allies. “Think about it. If I really was on my period and I really did ask her to buy me something, I’d definitely ask her to deliver it to my room. Why would I possibly ask her to drop it off at He Jichen’s room?”

“What’s more, if I really did ask her to come here, do you think I’d really stay with you both in the hot springs for so long, head of the dorms Huahua?”

That’s right. No girlfriend would allow their own boyfriend to be in the same room as a beautiful young woman in the middle of the night.

Lin Ya is He Jichen’s girlfriend, so why would she ask Ji Yi to go to He Jichen’s room? And why would she stay in the hot springs with us, knowing full well that Ji Yi was in He Jichen’s room?

Even though Bo He and Tang Huahua didn’t reply to Lin Ya’s words, their faces obviously looked as though they believed Lin Ya.

Seeing this, Ji Yi completely understood.

Lin Ya’s story was well-rehearsed.

Though Ji Yi didn’t know when Lin Ya started to hold a grudge for her, she was certain Lin Ya had plotted this for a long time.

Lin Ya knew she’d just finished her period and Bo He could back that story, so she used a good opportunity to string up a good story from a bunch of lies.

Her intent to drop off some food for He Jichen was fake; bringing Tang Huahua and Bo He over was her real intention.

First, Lin Ya wanted Bo He to bear witness and second, she wanted to embarrass me in front of all my roommates!

For Lin Ya to think up such a flawless plan, she wasn’t stupid. Seeing as Tang Huahua and Bo He stood by her side, her eyes filled with tears, appearing pitiful. “Xiao Yi, did you use me?”

“Everyone said that four years ago, Ji Yi, who’d joined B-film a year before, was a big shot. She wasn’t someone to be messed with. If it weren’t for the car accident three years ago that put her in a coma, then Ji Yi would’ve long been the queen bee of the entertainment industry today. All this time, I never believed those absurd rumours because I thought Xiao Ye was really nice. But today, I learned I was wrong. Xiao Yi, I never imagined you’d use me as a pawn to get closer to He Dage. Especially after how I’ve treated you so well all this time…”

As Lin Ya said this, large teardrops rolled down from the corner of her eyes.

Everything would’ve been fine if she hadn’t cried, but as soon as she did, everything fell apart. Having assumed Ji Yi used Lin Ya, Bo He and Tang Huahua couldn’t sit idly by any longer.

“Xiao Ya, don’t cry.”

“All of us live together—Xiao Yi, why would you go and do something like that?”

“Xiao Yi, why don’t you apologize to Xiao Ya? You’re in the wrong in the first place. If you just went to see He Xuezhang, fair enough but to use Xiao Ya as an excuse? That’s really going overboard.”

She had been through setups like this before.

She told He Jichen before, though he didn’t believe her and made her sound like a terrible person.

Now, even her roommates believed she had sinister motives and wanted to steal her roommate’s boyfriend…

When Ji Yi heard Bo He and Tang Huahua’s words, her blood ran cold and her face turned pale.

He Jichen, who hadn’t said a word from start to end but watched everything unfold, stared at Ji Yi’s back for quite some time. Then, his eyes dropped to her fingers.

Chapter 27: Thank You for Your Generosity (7)

Though they were quite some distance apart, he clearly saw her fingers tremble.

He Jichen’s mouth pursed slightly as he stared at Ji Yi’s fingers for a few seconds, then he opened his mouth.

The words he wanted to say didn’t manage to escape his lips before Ji Yi, who had her back turned from the door, suddenly repeated Lin Ya’s words, “After I’ve treated you so well all this time…” Her tone of voice wasn’t pitiful like Lin Ya’s but taunting instead.

“Huh…” chortled Ji Yi as she said that. “…Lin Ya, doesn’t your face hurt after saying those things?”

“Ji Yi, what do you mean? You were obviously the one who used me, and you schemed to embarrass me in front of so many people. Not only are you not the least bit sorry, you have the nerve to say such things. Just what the hell do you want?” Lin Ya cried violently and started to shiver as though Ji Yi had frightened her. She looked as innocent and pitiful as could be.

Bo He and Tang Huahua stared at Ji Yi, visibly upset.

Ji Yi pretended as though she hadn’t seen Lin Ya’s reaction and stared unwaveringly at her. “What do I want to do? I don’t want to do anything. I just want to ask you a question. Lin Ya, everything you said tonight—were you messing around or were you for real?”

“Xiao Yi, at a time like this, are you still not going to admit you tried to sabotage me? You still want to berate me and blame the victim…”

B lame the victim… Nice word choice. Just who’s blaming the victim here?

Ji Yi didn’t wait for poor, teary-eyed Lin Ya to finish speaking as she interrupted in a low and a far more serious tone of voice, “Don’t talk shit to me!”

Since Ji Yi’s tone of voice was so aggressive, Bo He couldn’t help but cry out, “Xiao Yi!”

Ji Yi ignored Bo He’s complaints and stared at Lin Ya, speaking freely, “Lin Ya, answer me this. Are you just messing with me, or are you for real?!”

“Xiao Yi, I never thought you were this type of person…” Lin Ya avoided her questions like before.

Ji Yi didn’t say anything but immediately removed her waterproof watch.

“I truly saw you as a friend. Even then, after I learned that you used me and embarrassed me…” continued Lin Ya.

Ji Yi pretended as though she didn’t hear what Lin Ya said and clicked a button on her watch with disregard for everyone around her.

“…Though I’m really upset and angry, I don’t really blame you…”

Ji Yi put the watch to her ear as though she was trying to hear something.

“…I still hope we can continue to be friends…”

Ji Yi brought the watch down from her ear and quickly clicked the button on her watch a few times.

“…So much so that I want to tell Bo He and Tang Huahua that we should pretend what happened to us tonight never happened at all. The four of us are still best roommates and best frie—”

Before Lin Ya could finish her final word, a voice was suddenly heard, “Xiao Yi, can you do me a favour?”

Chapter 28: Thank You for Your Generosity (cool

The words Lin Ya was about to speak suddenly dissipated into nothingness.

This… this is obviously my voice, but I didn’t say that earlier…

Bo He and Tang Huahua were also completely astonished.

The corridors were extremely quiet to the extent that you could hear Ji Yi’s voice, crystal clear: “What’s up??”

“My thing came…”

When Lin Ya’s voice was heard again, they finally suddenly snapped back to their senses and instinctively looked at the watch in Ji Yi’s hand.

So all this time, this watch they were looking at was no ordinary watch; it could record.

“…I felt a little strange just now so I went to buy some water. On the way, I took a turn into the restroom and found out that it really did come. I don’t know what’s going on this month… It came a few days early, so I’m not prepared. Maybe it was because I soaked in the hot springs—it’s a little heavy…”

Lin Ya and Ji Yi were whispering at the time, so the recording was a bit hard to hear. Even if Ji Yi turned up the volume to its very loudest, they still couldn’t quite make out some words. But with the words they could hear, they could make out it was Lin Ya’s voice, along with what she was saying.

Lin Ya’s face gradually turned pale, and her eyes shot over to He Jichen standing behind Ji Yi. She was visibly unsteady.

“…The supermarket is a little far from our room and since we’re only here for a night, I only brought an extra pair of pants. I’m scared that if I move around too much, I’ll get my clothes dirty so Xiao Yi, could you pick up some pads for me?”

The air in the hallway instantly turned tense with the sound of Lin Ya’s recorded voice.

Bo He and Tang Huahua looked over at Lin Ya.

Lin Ya’s pale face was flushed as she tightly pursed her lips and clutched her sleeves. She looked exactly like a thief being caught at the scene.

The recording was still going.

The hallway was frighteningly silent.

“…I’m about to go back to my room to get some rest, so drop it off at my room…”

With that, Ji Yi replied, “Mm, alright.” That was when Lin Ya remembered what she said afterwards and like she’d just been electrocuted, her whole body trembled. Then her whole body lurched towards Ji Yi with her claws. “Enough! Stop it!”

As she screamed, she hurled her handbag at Ji Yi’s head.

Unprepared, Ji Yi wasn’t ready for an attack by Lin Ya, so she didn’t have time to dodge.

While she stared at the bag on the verge of hitting her face, a forceful hand grabbed her arm. With quick reflexes, her entire body was dragged backwards.

The bag brushed past Ji Yi’s head and hit the door with a “Bang”!

Ji Yi only recovered from her shock seconds later.

He Jichen had pulled her away at the most crucial moment.

She didn’t even think about why He Jichen did such a thing before she instinctively pulled away from He Jichen’s hands. Then she took two steps forward and stood directly in front of Lin Ya.

Chapter 84: Su Qianci, You Are Disgusting
Translator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi-Bo Studio

Her fingers digging deep into the blanket under her body, Su Qianci was soaked in sweat. She felt acute pain in her lower stomach, as if something was slipping through her fingers silently. This feeling was both familiar and disturbing. She could still hear what everyone had said to her in her previous lifetime:

“Bitch, you fell down the stairs deliberately to frame my Mengying? You think people are going to believe you?”

“What an evil woman. The baby is two months old and has a heartbeat already. But it is unlucky enough to have such a mother.”

“Su Qianci, I did not expect you to be so treacherous. In order to incriminate Tang Mengying, you killed your own baby.”

Everyone was pointing fingers at her, and everyone was casting disgusted looks at her. Grandpa was completely disappointed in her. Her mother-in-law loathed her. And even her father-in-law treated her coldly. The Su family also blamed her for everything. No one knew that Tang Mengying was the one who pushed her. No one believed that.

“She deserved it.”

“Brother Sicheng is mine, mine!” Tang Mengying was smiling contentedly, holding the arm of Li Sicheng in the fire.

Suddenly, Li Sicheng opened his eyes and cursed Su Qianci coldly. “Disgusting!”

Su Qianci, you are so disgusting!

Her heart was wrenched. She stared at Tang Mengying and Li Sicheng, wanting to escape. However, she could not move or make a sound. Seeing more and more people coming toward her, cursing and pointing fingers, she heard everyone saying the same thing: disgusting, disgusting, disgusting…

“No, it was not me…”

Li Sicheng was half-asleep next to her bed and suddenly heard her weak cry. Desperate and helpless. He caught her swinging hands, and she squeezed his fingers hard as if she had found a savior.

“It’s okay…” Li Sicheng comforted her in a low voice, holding her hand.

He used his other hand to wipe away the sweat on her forehead, extremely gentle. He had no idea that he had it in him.

Her face covered in tears, Su Qianci slowly opened her eyes. She immediately saw Li Sicheng’s hand. His hand was rough, with some calluses. It was dark, probably 4 or 5 o’clock in the morning. Su Qianci moved his hand away to look at the handsome face behind it. The light was off. However, his presence was still overwhelming to her.

“You’re awake?” Li Sicheng saw that she was dazed and asked, “Do you need some water?”

Su Qianci stared at him. Familiar face and familiar expression. However, his tone was completely different.

Who is this? Li Sicheng?

She must be in a dream! How could Li Sicheng ever talk to her so gently? In addition, how could he stay around her at this time of the day?

Not getting a response from her, Li Sicheng poured her a glass of lukewarm water and placed it on the table. Then, he slowly helped her up, as if he was afraid to hurt her, whispering, “Are you feeling okay?”

Chapter 83: Have You Ever Felt Desperate
Translator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi-Bo Studio

Coach Jin’s face was covered in blood. He struggled to get up and begged weakly, “Mr. Li, please forgive me. I have a family to feed. My wife and kid cannot live without me.”

Li Sicheng’s eyes were as cold as ice. “You abandoned your family for just one million dollars. Why do you think I should believe you?”

Coach Jin was stunned. He had not mentioned one word about the one million dollars, so how did Li Sicheng find out?

“Who asked you to hurt her?”

“I have no idea. Yesterday, someone suddenly called me and asked that I take a few friends to Bleep …” However, before he finished the sentence, Li Sicheng clenched his fists again.

Coach Jin screamed and stepped back.

A man next to Li Sicheng kicked him down and said, “Keep talking.”

“He asked me to do that to Su Qianci and promised to give me five million dollars afterwards. One million was paid as a down payment. But I don’t know who that is. He knows my bank account and my name as well as my criminal records. I just can’t refuse.” As a hunk as Coach Jin was, he started to cry and beg.

“Is that a woman?”

“A man! He sounded young, in his twenties probably.”

When Cheng You walked in, everyone was staring at her. As smart and capable as she was, Cheng You felt a bit creeped out. Handing the information she had found to Li Sicheng, Cheng You said, “I just found out that the bank account that transferred the one million dollars to Jin Xiong is registered in a small town of T Province. It is 20 plus hours’ drive from Kingstown. However, the phone number used to call him is owned by an old blind guy, whose phone was stolen yesterday and then returned to him mysteriously.”

Coach Jin felt terrified. He was suddenly involved in the fight of the celebrities and a crime. What back luck!

Li Sicheng laughed coldly. He gazed at Coach Jin and asked Cheng You slowly, “So there was no clue?”

Cheng You felt a bit creeped out. Although she had been used to his temper, it was the first time she had seen him like this. “Well… There is definitely going to be something. However, we haven’t found anything yet.” Seeing Li Sicheng slowly walking toward Coach Jin, Cheng You spoke lower and lower.

Looking down at Coach Jin, Li Sicheng asked, “Have you ever felt desperate?”

“W… What?”

“Take him to the port. I’ll sail the boat myself.”

The soldier next to Li Sicheng shivered and hesitated. “Mr. Li, are you sure you’re going to do this?”

“What do you think?” Li Sicheng asked slowly, looking murderous.

“Yes sir!”

Half an hour later, in mysterious waters, a rope was tied on the waist of Coach Jin, while its other end was tied on the tail of a yacht.

Li Sicheng threw a piece of fresh meat into the sea, and the fins of sharks soon appeared on the quiet waters. Coach Jin’s heart sank inch by inch. He was suddenly reminded of what Li Sicheng had just said, “Have you ever felt desperate?”

The night was still young.

Chapter 82: His Anger
Translator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi-Bo Studio

Coach Jin was sweating all over. Kicked from behind, he immediately kneeled. He wanted to get up, but was held down by the bodyguards behind him. He suddenly felt a chill down his spine. Looking at the man in front of him, Coach Jin’s knees became weak.

Li Sicheng’s features were almost perfect, making him look like a sculpture. He did not have time to change out of the bloodstained clothes. Despite what he was wearing, he crossed his legs and looked graceful. With a cigarette between his fingers, he narrowed his eyes at Coach Jin, making the coach shiver.

Coach Jin had seen a lot of boxing experts in his life, but no one could make him feel this way. With only one look from this guy, he felt he had nowhere to hide, and he wanted to run away. However, before he got up, he was kicked down by the bodyguards behind him and had to crouch. Then, his hand was stepped on by a military boot.

“Ouch!” He screamed out of extreme pain.

But… a military boot?

Coach Jin looked left and right and found the bodyguards that took him to this place were very disciplined. They were not ordinary bodyguards, but soldiers! Coach Jin then realized whom he had pissed off. He immediately looked at Li Sicheng, who was just looking down at him.

“Where did you get him just now?”

“On the train, sir.”

“The train?”

“Yes, he was trying to run away.”

Without moving a muscle, Li Sicheng whispered, “Abandoning his wife and child?”

Coach Jin did not dare to say anything and bowed his head.

“That was a question. Did you plan to abandon your wife and child?” a soldier kicked him with the military boot, making Coach Jin scream.

“Seems that’s true.” Li Sicheng put out the cigarette and whispered, “However…”

He stood up, gestured to the soldier who had his foot on Coach Jin’s back to move away, and pull Coach Jin up. Coach Jin felt relieved. It seemed that this man was not as scary as he had thought. Feeling relaxed, he panted and asked, “However?”

Li Sicheng chuckled, and so did Coach Jin. However, a powerful punch was suddenly thrown on the coach’s face. Coach Jin screamed and was sent into the air. It startled everyone.

Bang!

Coach Jin’s body suddenly fell on the floor, as everyone heard his bones breaking. Like a jaguar, Li Sicheng jumped up and hit Coach Jin with both fists hard. Each time Li Sicheng hit him, a blue spot would be left on his body. The soldiers were a bit scared, pulling Li Sicheng away. If he continued, Coach Jin would die.

Coach Jin spit out some blood together with teeth. “My wife and child shall never be harmed by anyone.”

“However, since you have harmed mine. Don’t think you can keep those hands.”

Hearing that, Coach Jin felt that he was in hell…

Chapter 86: Visitor

Translator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi-Bo Studio
After complimenting Jiang Tong, Zhou Mingfei continued, “But my big brother is going to marry you in the future. You’ll have to move out of the old house sooner or later. On the day you marry my big brother, there might be people gossiping that you’ve hooked up with a rich man, got pregnant before marriage, and used your pregnancy to threaten him to marry you… In order to stop those people gossiping, Sister-in-law, you have to have your own house. At least, you have to have a decent one, right? That’s why you have to accept this house. It can be considered a wedding gift from me as your brother-in-law.”

Zhou Mingfei had carefully considered the matter of giving the house to Jiang Tong. He had mentioned it to Zhou Jingyun yesterday that as Jiang Tong had helped him, and even saved him, he had to repay her. Although he knew that Jiang Tong had some issues, this was a different matter. Jiang Tong had saved his life. Zhou Mingfei had thought about giving Jiang Tong money directly, but giving money directly was too tacky. Moreover, if the amount was too big, it would not be easy to get it. Zhou Mingfei knew that what he had done was walking on the edge of a knife. If he was careless and caused any problems, with the big sum of money that he would have sent to Jiang Tong, Jiang Tong would be implicated in his matters as well. Moreover, Jiang Tong was Zhou Jingyun’s girlfriend. This might even implicate Zhou Jingyun.

Therefore, after thinking about it, Zhou Mingfei decided to give this villa to Jiang Tong. The biggest benefit of giving a house to Jiang Tong was that the house was a fixed asset, so it would not cause too much trouble. This was a one-sided gift from him to Jiang Tong. Furthermore, this house alone cost more than 20 million dollars. Zhou Mingfei originally planned to move in at the end of the year, but he had recently been targeted by someone and decided to lay low. Therefore, he could not live in this house.

“Okay, you are quite considerate of your brother and me.” Jiang Tong agreed to accept the house. Generally speaking, she would not easily accept things from others because that was called receiving favors from others. She had to return the favor after accepting it. However, some things that should be accepted still had to be accepted. She could also guess some of Zhou Mingfei’s thoughts. Moreover, she knew that if she did not accept this house, Zhou Mingfei would be very uneasy. After all, one could not be without desires, being without desires would give people a very uneasy feeling. It would make people think that you had a bigger plan. That was why Jiang Tong had shown Zhou Jingyun that she loved money. Therefore, she had to accept this villa.

In the next twenty minutes or so, Zhou Mingfei brought Jiang Tong up and down the stairs. The house was about to be given to Jiang Tong. It was time to take a look around the house in advance. After looking at the house, the two went to the real estate office to transfer the ownership. It was very easy to transfer the ownership without any loan transactions, and the taxes and fees incurred were all paid for by Zhou Mingfei. This villa went under Jiang Tong’s name, and Jiang Tong did not have to pay a single cent!

After coming out of the real estate office, Jiang Tong and Zhou Mingfei separated. Zhou Mingfei wanted to return to the Lihao Ballroom, while Jiang Tong wanted to go back to her old house to tidy up and prepare to move in. She had to enjoy what she had to enjoy! Why did she have to live in a small house when she had a big house to live in?!

She carried her bag and moved into the villa. At ten o’clock in the evening, in the gym on the ground floor of South Washington, Jiang Tong sat on the ground covered in sweat. She lay on her back and panted heavily. She recalled what had happened in the past two days after the cycle ended. In just two short days, she did not do any business and did not think of ways to make money. She only got to know some people and said some words to help them. Just with that, someone had given her a sports car worth a million dollars and gave her a house worth a hundred million dollars. It was really wonderful to end the repeating cycle!

The next day, Zhou Jingyun came to the company early and held an executive meeting. It was not working hours yet, but when Zhou Jingyun held the meeting yesterday, he said that he would mobilize all the power of the company to find a spokesperson. The next morning, all the executives came to the company early for the morning meeting to report to him on the progress.

Zhou Jingyun was really annoyed by this matter. He was really too angry yesterday and called Shao Ying to scold her profusely. However, Shao Ying’s tone was like, “You can’t do it. Hurry up and admit defeat. It’s just one human life” This made Zhou Jingyun even angrier. The thought of him marrying such a woman in the future made him feel extremely disgusted.

The executive meeting was not over yet. A woman dressed luxuriously and elegantly, wearing large sunglasses that covered half of her face, appeared at the entrance of the company. She looked as if she was afraid of being recognized. The property manager of Huanyu Building accompanied the woman, and behind the woman were two tall and strong bodyguards. When passersby saw her entourage, they all made way for them.

Jingyun Fashion’s reception desk usually had to go to work early. Not long after the receptionist sat down, there were visitors at the door. It was very strange. It was not that there were visitors at this time, but who needed the property manager of Huanyu Building to accompany them?

Chapter 85: Gifting a House
The decoration of the villa was very luxurious. Jiang Tong looked around and then casually sat on the sofa. She asked, “Tell me, what happened?”

The reason why she looked at this house was that she had never been here before. In the five-hundred-year cycle, she had never entered this house. To be precise, she had never entered the interior of this house. She had been to this neighborhood a few times to investigate intelligence on other people. She had never entered this house before because Zhou Mingfei had many houses in City Z. This villa had been handed over to him three years ago. Later, the renovations gradually wasted more than a year’s time until the beginning of this year. However, Zhou Mingfei had not officially moved here for half a year. Perhaps because this villa was too far from the Lihao Ballroom, it was not very convenient to go back and forth every day. Zhou Mingfei could not live here, so Jiang Tong naturally had no reason to come and see what the situation was like in this house.

“This house is not bad, right?” Zhou Mingfei sat opposite Jiang Tong and habitually took out a cigarette. He even threw a cigarette at Jiang Tong. “I spent a lot of money on the renovation of this house. I specially hired a designer from abroad!”

“Don’t smoke.” Jiang Tong did not answer Zhou Mingfei’s words. Instead, she pointed at the cigarette in his mouth. “I can’t have the smell of cigarettes on my body. If your big brother smells it, he will nag me again.”

Zhou Mingfei’s fingers that were about to press on the lighter stopped just like that. He suddenly remembered that Jiang Tong was already pregnant… pregnant women couldn’t smell smoke! Jiang Tong’s memory was very good. She always remembered her identity as a pregnant woman.

“Yes, it’s my fault. I won’t smoke anymore.” Zhou Mingfei took down the cigarette and threw it on the table.

“The house is not bad. The decoration is also pretty good. It has been quite tastefully done up.” As Jiang Tong said that, she glanced at the piano in the hall. She smiled at Zhou Mingfei and said, “But why do you always like to put the piano in your own house? You don’t even know how to play it.”

“My big brother really tells you everything,” Zhou Mingfei smiled and said with a hidden meaning.

“Zhou Jingyun often tells me about you. Although he seems to be quite fierce to you, he really cares about you and is always worried that something will happen to you,” Jiang Tong said.

“Of course. We are biological brothers,” said Zhou Mingfei. He raised his hand and gestured, “Sister-in-law, why don’t we take a tour upstairs and downstairs?”

“Take a look at what?” Asked Jiang Tong.

“Just take a look,” said Zhou Mingfei with a smile. “I booked this house five years ago. The house was handed over to me three years ago and I started the renovations for it. I haven’t lived in it for more than a year. This house is regularly cleaned by people. It has three floors above ground and one floor below ground. It has a total of four floors. The area is about 600 square meters, and there are large courtyards at the front and back. “When I first bought it five years ago, the price was a bit cheaper than it is now. It was less than 60 million dollars. It has gone up a little over the years. If we add in the renovation should we decide to sell it, we can definitely sell it for 100 million dollars.”

“What do you mean by this?” Jiang Tong frowned. Was Zhou Mingfei showing off to her? But there was no need. Zhou Mingfei could show off to others, but to his sister-in-law, without knowing her background, Zhou Mingfei would not show off such things. It would be easy for others to look down on him.

“I don’t mean anything.” Zhou Mingfei smiled and took out the key from his pocket. Then, he pushed it in front of Jiang Tong. “Thank you, sister-in-law, for helping me yesterday. The property deeds and paperwork of this villa are all in the car. Sister-in-law, you have your ID card, right? Let’s go transfer the ownership right now!”

Zhou Mingfei gave away a villa worth 100 million dollars just like that.

“You’re gifting me the house?” Jiang Tong smiled. She was neither surprised nor surprised. She was very calm. “I helped you because of your brother. It’s not for your house or to get anything from you.”

“Sister-in-law, what you said…” Zhou Mingfei shook his head. “Even blood brothers have to clear their accounts. If you didn’t help me yesterday, I’m afraid I would have lost hundreds of millions. This money isn’t much. The main reason is that if you didn’t give me advice, I might have been kept in the dark. One day, I might have been taken away by the police. Let’s not talk about the reminder you’ve given me. Just the casino incident alone has helped me get back my capital. I even won more than 100 million. This house is only 100 million. No matter how I think about it, I still haven’t given you enough. Moreover…” Zhou Mingfei’s tone changed. “Actually, I’m also planning for Big Brother and your future.”

“For our future?” Jiang Tong raised her eyebrows.

“Yes,” Zhou Mingfei nodded. “Sister-in-law, although you and my big brother aren’t married yet, you’re already pregnant. It’s only a matter of time before the two of you get married. Sister-in-law, you’re still living in your old house, right? I know that you keep a low profile, Sister-in-law. You don’t like to show off.”

Chapter 40: Just You
Translator: Atlas Studios Editor: Atlas Studios

It was noontime when An Xiaoning received a call from Auntie Chen, who had called to inform her that it was Jin Qingyan’s birthday. He did not plan on holding a big celebration, however. Instead, he just wanted her to go home for dinner.

Just as she was about to reject it, Auntie Chen spoke again to say that he had invited a few friends over and that they were all waiting for her to come home.

Thus, An Xiaoning agreed. Thinking that the guests present were all his friends, none of which were hers, she decided to bring Mei Yangyang along. Besides, Mei Yangyang had not eaten either.

The backyard was filled with four or five luxury cars.

“Sis, your house is huge!” exclaimed Mei Yangyang when she alighted.

“Hurry, come on in,” said An Xiaoning as she held Mei Yangyang by her hand.

“Alright.”

Amongst the few people in the living room sat a good friend of Jin Qingyan’s apart from Long Tianze. His name was Ling Ciye and he was a gang member, apparently. An Xiaoning could tell right away that he was not a simple man, just from his body language. Jin Qingyue, who was also present, acted as if An Xiaoning did not exist at all. She kept her eyes glued onto the video game on her mobile phone. Jin Qingyan had had his eyes fixed on An Xiaoning since the very moment she entered. However, she pretended not to notice and, instead, took a seat together with Mei Yangyang.

“We’re ready for the dishes to be served.”

“Alright,” said Auntie Chen as she hurried to the kitchen.

Everyone rose from their seats, one after another. Taking a look at the words on the huge cake on the table, which read “Happy Birthday to my Dearest Husband!” An Xiaoning grimaced — he actually tried to pass off as her and ordered a cake for himself!

“After today, you’ll be 26. Close your eyes and make a wish before you blow out the candles,” said An Xiaoning as she lit up 26 candles.

Jin Qingyan proceeded accordingly and blew out the candles in one breath after opening his eyes. The rest of the guests crooned to the birthday song and applauded along.

“Quick, tell us, what did you wish for?” asked Long Tianze.

“It won’t come true if I say it out loud,” Jin Qingyan said.

“Who said so? Why don’t I guess what you wished for? I know what you’re thinking, I’ll guess it with just one try.”

“You can try to guess all you want,” said Jin Qingyan conceitedly.

“Forget it, since it’s your birthday, you call the shots. I won’t be a spoilsport. During my birthdays when I was younger, I used to wish for a chance to earn lots of money when I grow up, because back then, my mother was always stingy with my allowance. I even wished for my father to get a new wife. And because of that wish, I almost got beaten to death by my mother.”

“Hahahaha,” everyone burst into laughter upon hearing Long Tianze’s anecdote.

Ling Ciye could not help but joke, “Tianze, your mother should’ve broken your legs. If she did, you would be a cripple now.”

“How sharp-tongued you are! My mother still loves me, alright?” retorted Long Tianze.

“Now I know. When he was younger, Tianze didn’t receive a beating for that incident, and thus, he got braver with each beating. Mrs. Long did love him very much, otherwise, she wouldn’t have hit him all the time,” said Mo Li.

Mei Yangyang did not bring a gift with her because she was not aware previously that it was Jin Qingyan’s birthday. At that instant, she said with a glib tongue, “Happy Birthday, Brother-in-law. May you and Sis welcome a child into your lives soon and remain happily in love for the rest of your years.”

“Thank you,” thanked Jin Qingyan as his lips thinned into a smile.

After cutting the cake, everyone returned to their seats and prepared to begin feasting. The dishes were then served one by one.

At this moment, Maomao began to bark continuously all of a sudden. All eyes on the entrance, they watched as Chi Rui’er entered through the door, a gift in her hands.

An Xiaoning’s spirits were dampened at the sight of her.

“Ew! What’s this ugly thing here? Get away from me,” snarled Chi Rui’er as she gave Maomao a kick, causing it to bark even louder.

Jin Qingyan stood up and bellowed, “Get back inside your kennel!”

Maomao let out a whimper and stopped barking. Being exceptionally spiritual, it returned to its kennel while constantly turning back to look at its owner.

“Qingyan, it’s your birthday today, and so I specially got you the shirts you liked. They’re in your favorite color, too. Take it as a birthday gift from me.”

An Xiaoning took a glimpse of the logo on the paper bag she was carrying. It was a luxury brand known for their expensive shirts. Indeed, it was his favorite.

“Thank you. Have you eaten?” asked Jin Qingyan as he took the bag from her hands and placed it atop the teapoy.

“I haven’t, actually.”

“Take a seat and eat with us, then,” Jin Qingyan offered as he returned to his seat.

It seemed her arrival had greatly affected the ambiance. The initial chatter and boisterous laughter came to a halt, and everyone sat and ate quietly.

On the other hand, Long Tianze was continuously pouring everyone some liquor. The liquor they had that day happened to be Jin Qingyan’s favorite, Dreamyanghe.

For someone like Mei Yangyang who cannot hold her liquor well, a glass of regular liquor would be enough to get her tipsy, let alone one like Dreamyanghe, which was sure to knock her out of her senses with just half a glass. However, noticing that everyone else was drinking, Mei Yangyang did not want to be a killjoy. Thus, she decided to have just a few drinks, which was rather intoxicating though she had already kept the amount minimal.

At least she could continue with the meal.

But after some time, they began toasting to Jin Qingyan again, and she could not help but have another few sips of the liquor. She prayed in her head not to embarrass herself again like she did the night before, but in reality, she was already drunk.

She was not the only one who was far from sober, though. Everyone else had also had one too many to drink throughout the course of dinner that evening.

Even An Xiaoning herself had guzzled down a significant amount of liquor.

Jin Qingyan was the only one who had managed to stay sober.

Mei Yangyang sprawled herself across the couch while Long Tianze laid on the other end of it. To the surprise of Ling Ciye, the liquor had managed to knock him out, and he occupied an entire couch all for himself. On the other hand, Jin Qingyue and Mo Li supported themselves against the couch. Even Chi Rui’er had not been spared. She sat by the dining table with her eyes closed and her chin resting on her hand.

“Young Sir, shall I prepare some broth to help them sober up?” asked Auntie Chen inquisitively.

“Not at the moment. You may go get some rest first, Auntie Chen. Please order them not to enter without my instruction.”

“Alright,” said Auntie Chen as she proceeded at once.

Jin Qingyan stood up and walked behind An Xiaoning. Hovering around her ear, he asked with a nibble on her earlobe, “Are you drunk?”

The quick-witted An Xiaoning cocked her head slightly to face him. She began to sober up at the very instant that her lips brushed lightly against his face.

“A little.”

All of a sudden, he reached out to cup her chin with great force. The moment she felt the pain, An Xiaoning had no choice but to stand up while supporting herself with the chair. “What are you doing, Jin Qingyan?” she hissed.

“Are you throwing a tantrum now?”

“So what if I am? And so what if I’m not? Are you going to say that I don’t have the right to?”

“No, you do. But you already gave me a hard time for it. What else do you want?” he asked with his eyes fixed on her.

“Do you really think that’s equal?”

“Why wouldn’t it be?”

With a squint, she asked, “Let me ask you a question. How many women do you have?”

“Just you, no one else,” he said with a mellow voice. He had carried her by her waist and lowered her onto the dining table. At that instant, the tableware fell to the ground with a loud and crisp thud.

An Xiaoning was shocked to her core. She asked him nervously, “They’re all here. What are you trying to do?”

“What am I trying to do? Don’t you know the answer? You, of course,” he answered with a smirk.

“They’ll come to, anytime. Do you actually have the guts to be intimate with me, right in the presence of Chi Rui’er?” she asked apprehensively. She had a feeling that he would not do so.

“What’s there to be fearful of?” An Xiaoning felt her legs being wrapped around his waist as soon as he finished his sentence.

Chapter 39: Let’s Sleep Separately Tonight

Long Tianze came back from upstairs. Seeing how Jin Qingyan was repeatedly looking towards An Xiaoning’s direction, he knew that he had found out.

Leaning against the bar counter, he exclaimed, “Your wife is right there, and you still dare to bring this woman here? Do you have a death wish?”

Upon hearing that, Chi Rui’er immediately scanned her surroundings, but there were too many people so she could not find An Xiaoning.

“What is she doing here?”

“We met by accident and had a meal together, so we dropped by here after that.”

Jin Qingyan started walking towards An Xiaoning, with Long Tianze and Chi Rui’er following behind.

An Xiaoning did not move an inch. Seeing him walk towards her, she maintained her composure. In truth, she was actually thinking of how to teach him a lesson tonight.

With that thought in mind, an opportunity came at that moment.

Gu Beicheng was calling her.

“Boss, that fellow is calling again!”

Hearing this ringtone straight-up made Chi Rui’er burst out into laughter.

An Xiaoning slid her phone to answer. She took a more comfortable posture, with both legs resting on the coffee table and her body leaning on the sofa. Her voice was soft and sweet like melting honey.

“Hello.”

On the other end, Gu Beicheng was slightly in shock. A mere “Hello” made him sense that An Xiaoning was behaving unusually.

“You’re sick?”

An Xiaoning resisted the urge to revert to her normal attitude and continued, “What do you want to say at this time?”

“Why is it so noisy at your end, are you at a bar?”

“Umm, at ‘Night Spirit’ — want to come over for a drink?”

“What a coincidence, I’m passing by. Give me a moment.” After he hung up, An Xiaoning reached out to raise the wine glass. Acting like she had never seen Jin Qingyan and Chi Rui’er, her attitude was so carefree that Jin Qingyan could not help but wanted to ask: was she so blind that she hadn’t seen him?

“Who was that?” Jin Qingyan asked as he sat down beside her.

An Xiaoning smirked. “Want to know?”

Jin Qingyan saw that smirk and felt slightly uncomfortable. Perhaps that was because he noticed how that smile faded quickly from her face.

“It’s late now, go home.”

An Xiaoning acted like she didn’t hear him. She turned her back on him and held onto Mei Yangyang.

Jin Qingyan knew what An Xiaoning was feeling. Although she pretended to be cool about it on the surface, she was really angry.

It was the kind of anger that had been contained inside for a long time, one that would simply explode at a specific point.

Chi Rui’er just stood there before finally sitting down on the sofa, not saying a word. She was like an innocent victim who was out of the picture.

Eventually, it was the masculine voice of a man that broke the temporary silence.

Gu Beicheng did not sit down directly. He stood behind the sofa An Xiaoning was sitting on, then bent over and asked in a low voice, “I called you because I had something to talk to you about, but it seems like now’s not the time for that. Why does this feel like a crime scene?”

His voice contained a tinge of a sneer. It was rather obvious — his gaze was on An Xiaoning the whole time, not even for a second was it spared on Chi Rui’er.

“Get in the car if you have something to say.” She stood up, supporting a drunk Mei Yangyang out as she left.

Hearing her words, Jin Qingyan’s face changed.

But An Xiaoning was not about to consider his reputation, feelings, or even what he would think.

When they reached the car, An Xiaoning sat in the driver’s seat and turned to face Gu Beicheng who was seated beside her. “You really have something to tell me?”

“No, I just thought of calling you at night. I said that just now as an excuse to get you out.” Gu Beicheng felt increasingly that this woman was a mystery to him. It made him more curious to find out what kind of person she was and know more about her.

An Xiaoning leaned back slightly. “What virtues does Chi Rui’er have?”

“Not sure. Because I’ve never bothered to study her, I think it’s a waste of time. That’s why I broke up with her. But one thing’s for sure, she’s nothing compared to you.” This was spoken from Gu Beicheng’s heart, even though he’d only known An Xiaoning briefly and didn’t completely understand what kind of person she was.

An Xiaoning turned and flashed a flat smile. “Which area can’t she be compared to me, I want to know.”

“Looks — you’re more good-looking than her.”

“That’s true, my beauty is universally recognized.”

Gu Beicheng raised his eyebrows. “And you’re more capable than her. Although she doesn’t look too bad, she’s like a fragile vase. But you, you’re different. If you weren’t married, I’d marry you into my household as my first wife and then marry a dozen other wives. You can reign over the harem.”

“No thanks.” An Xiaoning burst out laughing. “Marry a dozen other wives? You’d be dead meat already.”

“Oh, no — you’re the only one for me. As for the other wives, they are your slaves. You can order them around to serve you.”

Visualizing this scenario drove An Xiaoning onto the verge of laughter again. She looked out of the car window and remarked slowly, “I can tell others’ fortunes but I can’t tell my own — nor Jin Qingyan’s. If I can see how my life would turn out in the future, I’d act according to how things are fated to happen.”

He caressed her head and responded, “It’s late. Go back earlier to rest. I’m leaving.”

“Umm.”

Gu Beicheng got off the car and headed towards his own car.

An Xiaoning, on the other hand, had to send Mei Yangyang home before returning to her house.

Jin Qingyang took a short rest on the sofa. Hearing some noises, he spoke in his cold voice, “You still know to come back?”

The only reason he was sitting there was to wait for her.

An Xiaoning bent down to change her shoes, completely ignoring him. She was like that when she was angry, refusing to speak a word to him.

Jin Qingyan stood up, cursing under his breath, “Damn it.”

He followed behind closely, only to realize that the bedroom door had been locked from the inside. When he returned with the key to open it, the handle seemed to have been grasped tightly from the inside to prevent one from opening the door.

Jin Qingyan exerted all his strength to kick the door. “Open it!”

An Xiaoning acted like she did not hear it. After a while, hearing the commotion from downstairs, she loosened her grip and started changing into her pajamas.

When the door suddenly opened, Jin Qingyan, who was standing at the doorway, was incensed. “An Xiaoning, how dare you. You dare to lock me outside?”

“Other than killing you, what else would I not dare to do?” An Xiaoning cast him a side-glance. “Jin Qingyan, let’s sleep separately tonight. You go and sleep in the guest room.”

“I refuse to, I’ll sleep right here.” He went forward, boldly sitting right next to her.

“Alright then, I’ll sleep in the guest room.” She went to the dressing room to take a set of clothes and stormed out, slamming the door shut.

Jin Qingyan pushed back the covers and lay down, but he just couldn’t seem to fall asleep no matter what. He tossed about over and over again and only fell asleep eventually when it was very late.

Actually, An Xiaoning was unable to sleep that night too. She went in and out of sleep until it was daylight. When the alarm ringtone reminded her that it was Jin Qingyan’s birthday, she turned it off and went out without even eating breakfast, instead grabbing a bite at a breakfast shop before going to the clothing store.
