The Anambra State Government has stepped up its campaign against domestic violence and child abuse, as the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN, personally led the arraignment of a man and his wife for torturing their 11 year house help with fire heated plastic, burning his skin several times and forcing him to sleep on the floor with the wounds

The defendants standing trial are accused of inflicting horrific physical abuse on a young boy named Chizitere, whom they reportedly tortured by pouring melted plastic directly onto his body, resulting in severe burn injuries.

The case, which previously sparked widespread public outrage and drew high-level state condemnation, took a decisive legal turn during the court session when the Attorney General took direct charge of the prosecution.

During their formal arraignment, the defendants applied for a plea bargain in order to negotiate a lesser sentence.

The prosecution is expected to review the plea application, weighing the gravity of the child torture charges against the principles of justice and public interest.

Maduka University Admission Requirements
For the 2026/2027 JAMB admission route, candidates who scored 150 and above in the 2026 UTME are eligible to apply, subject to meeting the requirements for their chosen programme.

Applicants are required to provide their JAMB details and O'Level information during the application process. The application portal accepts WAEC, NECO and NABTEB qualifications, with O'Level results permitted in not more than two sittings.

Anambra State Govt Offers Plea Bargain To All Suspects, AG Issues Directives, Excludes Serious Violent Crimes Only

The Anambra State Government has offered plea bargain to all suspects standing criminal trial in the State except those standing trial for the offences of murder, kidnapping,, armed robbery and rape.

According to the statement issued today by the Attorney General of Anambra State, Tobechukwu Nweke SAN, this rare discretionary privilege is part of the ongoing efforts of the State Government to decongest the correctional centers and the courts and to align with the ongoing reform of the criminal justice sector in the State in line with the mandate of the Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo.

The Attorney General has further to this, issued a Direction to all prosecutors in the State requiring them to issue the prescribed Plea Bargain Forms accompanying the Direction to all defendants in criminal cases before plea is taken. The Direction is dated the 22nd July, 2026 and applies to all offences created by the laws of the State except the offences of murder, kidnapping,, armed robbery and rape

This will be the first time a State Government will be taking such a bold step to offer plea bargain to large members of the society facing criminal trial.

Under plea bargain, a Defendant is required to plead guilty and be given a lesser sentence by the courts.

Fresh details have emerged regarding the ₦2 million transcript fee charged by Maduka University for students in some professional courses, following public criticism by a woman who alleged that the institution was withholding her child's academic transcript.

Education advocate and Chief Executive Officer of Educare, Alex Onyia, said he held extensive discussions with the founder of Maduka University, Dr. Samuel Maduka Onyishi, over the controversy.

According to Onyia, the university's management disputed the claims made by the woman, alleging that she had not paid for the transcript she was requesting and still owed the institution outstanding fees from previous academic sessions.

He further stated that the woman's claim that her child graduated as the institution's best student was inaccurate.

Onyia said the university had already issued a statement of result to the student and was willing to release the transcript once the student secured admission into another institution. According to him, no such admission had yet been obtained.

Explaining the rationale behind the ₦2 million transcript fee, Onyia said the policy was introduced to discourage students from using private universities as temporary pathways to gain admission into federal universities.

He noted that many students who fail to secure admission into federal universities due to high JAMB cut-off marks often enroll in private universities offering professional courses such as medicine, nursing, pharmacy and law.

According to him, some of these students spend a year in private institutions before requesting transcripts at 200 level to transfer to federal universities, where JAMB scores are no longer a major admission requirement.

"So students who scored very low in JAMB come to join their school for a year and in 200 level request for transcript to port to a federal university because at that time JAMB score is no more required," Onyia stated.

He said the university introduced the policy after observing what it described as a growing trend of student transfers from professional programmes.

Onyia further explained that private universities offering professional courses operate under stringent accreditation requirements despite having significantly lower admission quotas than federal institutions.

According to him, Maduka University is permitted to admit a maximum of 50 medical students, while some federal universities admit up to 250 students into similar programmes.

He added that private universities are required to maintain comparable standards in terms of lecturers, facilities and equipment despite their smaller student population.

"To be accredited, the university is required to hire the same number of lecturers and equipment a federal university has, but the low slot of 50 is heavily impacting them negatively," he said.

He noted that the transcript policy primarily affects medicine, nursing, pharmacy and law programmes, where transfer requests are reportedly more common.

Onyia also claimed that several other private universities offering medical-related courses operate similar policies aimed at discouraging mass transfers of students to public universities.

Maduka University Enugu has taken note of the video made by a parent and content creator, Mrs. Chika Akhigbe, currently circulating on social media concerning the release of her daughter’s official transcript. Her daughter is a student in the Department of Medicine and Surgery. In the interest of fairness, transparency, and accurate public information, the University wishes to clarify the following facts:

1. The student’s father was duly informed by the Registrar to provide the name of the institution to which the official transcript would be sent, in line with standard university practice and established academic procedures. This address has not been provided.

2. The father of the student stated that the official transcript was needed to enable them to search for another university for their daughter. However, university official transcripts are sent only to designated institutions and not released directly to individuals.

3. The issue of official transcript processing fees remains the prerogative of the University, as is the practice in higher institutions globally.

4. During the interaction, the student’s father stated that he was unable to pay the prescribed official transcript fee and subsequently threatened to escalate the matter publicly and legally.

He also visited other offices within the University, including the Admissions Office and the Bursary Department, making similar threats.

5. In the video, Mrs. Chika Akhigbe, the student’s mother, claimed that they have paid all their daughter’s school fees which is not true.

They have an outstanding of Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500,000) out of N3.5m for the 2025/2026 academic session.

6. Her claim of having paid for the processing fee for the official transcript is false. As at May 21, 2026, the University is yet to receive any payment from her for the purpose of any transcript processing.

7. At no point did the Vice-Chancellor handle or discuss the official transcript matter with the student’s parents, as alluded by the mother in her video. The interaction was solely with the Registrar, whose office supervises official transcript processing through the University Records Office.

8. Her claim that the University increased school fees for 2025/2026 academic session for returning medical students to N4.5m is false. The school fee including accommodation for returning medical students is N4,010,000 for the 2026/2027 academic session which has not taken off.

9. Her claim that we increase school fees annually and therefore have become unaffordable is also false. We have maintained one of the lowest fee regimes among our contemporaries.

10. Her claim that her daughter is the best performing student in her class is false.

11. Her claim on insecurity is false and unsubstantiated; we have never had any security breaches since the inception of the University.

12. It is clear that she is on a mission to tarnish the reputation of the University through her campaign of calumny and character defamation. Her intention is to use her social media influence to force the University to circumvent official protocol. It is surprising that a mother would use the education of her daughter to entertain her social media followers and drive traffic to her page.
