Investment / Seahorse Lubricants Boss, HRM, Dr. Ebuka Onunkwo Bags Industrialist Of The Year by Visagemedia(m): 5:23pm On Oct 18, 2021
Renowned philanthropist and Chief Executive Officer of Seahorse Lubricants Industries Limited, Ebuka Onunkwo, has been named the Industrialist of the Year.

The humble and smart-working Ihembosi, Anambra State-born entrepreneur bagged the award on Saturday at the just-concluded Sun Newspapers Awards held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos.

The management of the respected media outfit had noted that in awarding the Industrialist of the Year investiture, the Editorial Board of the newspaper and the committee looked at an individual, who has etched his/her name in gold in the business world in Nigeria, especially manufacturing sector.

The paper said Onunkwo emerged winner ahead of other persons earlier nominated for the award for the phenomenal success of Seahorse Lubricants Industries Ltd. in the year under review.

It lauded the industrialist for blazing the trail through a dint of hard work despite not being born into a rich family.

In his brief citation, The Sun recalls how Onunkwo rose “From selling spare parts, he forayed into importing lubricants and later batteries into Cotonou, Republic of Benin and later Nigeria. Before long, his business expanded beyond his imagination.

In February 2015, his partners in Turkey went bankrupt and stopped production. He lost a lot of money, $3.2m already remitted for his goods.

“Born on December 3, 1970, Onunkwo’s slow and steady journey to wealth is a soothing story to encourage any budding entrepreneur that diligence and perseverance pay. “He was not born into a rich family where his kernels were cracked for him by benevolent spirits.

However, by dint of diligence, he has etched his name in gold in business, especially manufacturing.” The award was presented to him by Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, widow of the late Eze Ndigbo, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

In his speech shortly after receiving the award, Onunkwo thanked the management of The Sun for deeming him fit for the honour. He promised not to relent on his oars, adding that the award would spur him to “keep pushing.”

He dedicated the award to his wife and members of his staff for believing in him and giving him the time and support he needed to work to attain this height.

Seahorse Lubricants Industries Ltd. is situated in Ozubulu, Anambra State, South-East, Nigeria. With the approval of the Department of Petroleum Resources, it started operation in 2017.

The Company boasts of products such as multigrade motor oil, automatic transmission fluids, (ATF) manual gear oil, diesel engine oil and synthetic motor oil.

It also effectively implements a quality management system following the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 International Standard.

It is worthy to note that Seahorse Lubricants Industries Ltd won the best oil of the year in 2021.

Autos / Peace Mass Transit Breaks New Ground, Transfers Bus Ownership To Drivers by Visagemedia(m): 5:30pm On Jul 04, 2019
Foremost transporters, Peace Mass Transit (PMT) Limited, has unveiled a unique staff welfare package that transforms its bus drivers to owners of such vehicles in record time.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the company, Dr. Sam Maduka Onyishi, is optimistic the new policy will bring about a better safety record and in addition, give drivers an assured sense of belonging and responsibility to handle vehicles in their possession with more care.

The policy comes into effect Monday, July 1, 2019. It is the first of such innovation in the transport industry in Nigeria and code-named Driver-To-Owner (DTO) Scheme

It is on record that PMT pioneered the speed limiter innovation in commercial buses in Nigeria 10 years ago. Then Corp Marshal, Osita Chidoka, personally visited PMT headquarters at Emene, to commission the project.

Dr. Onyishi, who announced the new policy to a gathering of excited drivers at the Emene headquarters of the Peace Group Friday, told them all PMT buses in their possession had technically become theirs, and would formally change ownership if and when they made steady financial returns up to an agreed amount into the account of the company, in due course.

It is widely acknowledged that drivers of commercial vehicles are generally more considerate and safety conscious if and when they have an economic stake in the vehicle they operate.

Dr. Onyishi told them that from Monday, July 1, they would effectively become owners of the buses they drive, while assuring that the new policy was well-thought-out and particularly designed to appreciate and empower drivers in the service of PMT.

Dr. Onyishi recalled while addressing the staff that he had promised the present Corps Marshall, Boboye Oyeyemi, during his maiden visit to PMT, that as Chief Executive officer, he would continue to think out of the box and make necessary sacrifices to improve safety on the Nigerian highways. The DTO, he added, was in partial fulfillment of that pledge

The over 3000 buses in the PMT active fleet are involved in the scheme in the first instance, in addition to the 200 units of new Kingo Hiace buses to be injected shortly. They are undergoing final stages of installation at the Peace Mass Auto Assembly Plant.

The CEO told the staff that the DTO policy was meant to reward hard work and create future PMT drivers and their families would look forward to with assurance and pride.

Prior to the introduction of the DTO, PMT had had, over the years a reward policy for diligent drivers on long service. Under this policy, drivers who had put in 15years and above in PMT service are entitled to a bonus of a fairly used vehicle on retirement.

PMT is the leading mass transit company in the country with operational depots in over 65 locations across the federation.

She has been around for over two decades.

Business / Peace Mass Transit: A Grain Of Mustard Seed. by Visagemedia(m): 4:55pm On Dec 11, 2018
The Holy Bible says “the Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field; which indeed is smaller than all seeds… But when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in its branches…”, Matthew 13:31-32. Wikipedia says a mustard tree can grow as tall as 40 feet in the best soil and weather conditions, and flourishes most in blazing sunny situations.

Peace Mass Transit (PMT) Limited, widely acknowledged as the leader in the mini- bus transport sector in the Nigeria road transport industry, has all the characteristics of the mustard seed in all material particular, as lawyers would say.

It has grown from a lowly two- bus fleet in 1994 to a massive, yet unmatched active 3,000-bus fleet, with many subsidiary firms, all of which now constitute the humongous Peace Group.

And like the mustard seed which flourishes better under the harsh sunny weather, the growth of Peace Mass Transit has not happened under any specially favorable or challenge-free conditions. The progression has been a product of an ethical, faithful application of the best humanist business principles, by a steady crop of dedicated staff, with the ‘man with the dream’, Evangelist Samuel Maduka Onyishi, MON, at the helm of affairs.

Dr. Onyishi, a devout christain, maintains Peace Mass is his own ‘ministry’, which he has a responsibility to run with a discernible ‘human face’. PMT is a testimony to the fact that even businesses which are ethical, can also prosper.

Peace Mass Transit prides itself as the first mini-bus company in Nigeria to ‘decree’ 3 passengers per row, instead of the hitherto conventional 4. Passengers never had it so good! Before the advent of Peace Mass, it was common to behold fully loaded passenger buses, with open booths and pieces of luggage hanging precariously behind. Peace Mass, by practical demonstration showed that the passenger was worth so much more, and deserves far much more! The speed limiter which has been incorporated into the nation’s public transport policy was pioneered by Peace Mass Transit and launched by the then Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety, Chief Osita Chidoka, at Peace Mass Central Workshop, Emene Enugu, in 2009.

“Money can buy you bed, but not sleep”, is a famous Peace Mass saying, acknowledging the supremacy of God in the life of the human or non-human person. Peace Mass Transit’s amazing growth over the years couldn’t have occurred if the Almighty God did not decree it shall be so! So at PMT, the place of God is incontestable; He is always the number one. If not God, how could two mini-buses turn to 3000-active fleet at the 22nd anniversary in 2016? And staff strength of just two, Onyishi and wife, Emilia, multiply to 4000 jobs within the same period?

Peace Mass Transit, in two decades of uninterrupted business operations, has over 65 bus terminals across the country, and moves over 30,000 loyal passengers on daily basis. This staggering operational statistics sets it far apart from other industry players before it, and even those sharing the same business space with it, in the present day.

At inception in 1994, PMT had a paltry paid-up capital of #100, 000, has, by the uncommon Grace from God grown into a multi billion conglomerate as at December 31, 2017.

The company, whose vision is “to be the number one transport company in Nigeria with global recognition,” is present in over 65 locations across Nigeria. It prides itself in building permanent, sustainable structures for steady development and owns 90% of its bus terminals.

Peace Mass Transit has the largest, most highly equipped, and arguably the best professionally managed maintenance workshop ever owned by a transport company in the country, in recorded history.

Peace Mass has, over the years, given rise to several other subsidiary companies, which now constitute the Peace Group, including Peace Petroleum Nigeria Limited, Peace Micro Finance Bank Ltd, Peace Mass Logistics (PML) Ltd, Peace Bureau De Change, PMT Beijing Trade Co. China Ltd, Peace Capital Market Ltd (A member of the Nigerian Stock Exchange), Fonton International Ltd (Auto Sales), Peace Printing Press, Peace Quick Response Insurance Brokers Ltd and lately, Peace Automobile Assembly Plant. The Peace Automobile Assembly Plant which commercial operations in August 2016.

The Vehicle Assembly Plant has the capacity to produce 1,000 units of Peace Hiace buses yearly, having been conceived with the best Chinese Technology, in modern day. The company uses, at least, 10% local content, while the foreign/imported components are brought in as Semi-Knocked Down (SKD) parts.

The Peace Assembly Plant, which took 12 months to be fully set up, rolled out its first products in January 2017, whose entire stock was bought up by the PMT, the transport arm.

Peace Mass Transit buying up the entire production was both strategic and desirable. The performance of the new products would have to be gauged in a dispassionate manner, using returns/data generated from reliable, assured sources. And since PMT buy so much of other brands, especially Toyota to which PMT is a perennial best customer, it could turn out to be the biggest customer of the Peace Assembly Plant, being its own subsidiary.

Instructively, the feedback from the use of the Peace Hiace has been entirely positive and encouraging. It has justified the investment in the plant as one well made.

Special, distinguishing features of the Peace Hiace, Include, but not limited to the EBS/ABS brake system combined, Digital Dashboard, factory- fitted speed limiter; Quality DVD player and TVS for customers’ non-stop entertainment, multiple charging points for GSM users and luggage control. The bus is fully air conditioned with seat belts for all passengers.

Board and Management: the Peace Group has a five-man Board of Directors over-seeing its affairs, chaired by founder, Dr. Samuel Maduka Onyishi who directs the affairs of the company on full time basis as Managing Director/CEO.

The company has four directorates namely Operations, Maintenance, Support Services and Subsidiaries, each headed by an Executive Director (ED).

The ten departments of the company include Maintenance, Operations, Financial Control, Audit, ICT, Customer Service/Media & publicity, Public Administration, Purchasing and Legal/Secretariat, Human Resources, Research/Development, Health, Security and Environment (HSE.)

Crime / Peace Mass Transit, NDLEA Enlighten Staff On Movement Of Illicit Drugs by Visagemedia(m): 4:49pm On Dec 10, 2018
Any staff of Peace Mass Transit logistics services who, knowingly or through negligence engages in transportation of illicit drugs, is on his or her own, the PMT management has declared.

Vice Chairman of the company, Lady Emilia Onyishi, stated recently that PMT had a reputation which was built through diligence and hard work and that all categories of staff had a responsibility to maintain the good name.
Mrs. Onyishi spoke while representing the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the company (CEO) Dr. Sam Maduka Onyishi, at a seminar organized by the Peace Mass and the Enugu state command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The one-day seminar held at the Emene, Enugu headquarters PMT Tuesday.
Mrs. Onyishi told the gathering, which included PMT logistics/courier staff from across the federation, that the main essence of the seminar was to educate staff on what constituted illicit, illegal or banned substances, to avoid their being accessories to their distribution.

“All eyes would always be on PMT because of the position we occupy as major players in transportation, so we all have a collective responsibility to guard our name and image jealously, “she told them.

The Vice Chairman told the gathering that the foundation of Peace Mass was built on hard work and diligence and not dubious or sharp practices while urging them to take the lecture seriously as any form of complicity or negligence on the part of staff with regards to transportation of banned substances or drugs would be dealt with without sentiments.
In his remark, Enugu State commandant of NDLEA, Dr. Anthony Ohanyere, urged the courier staff to be vigilant at all times, as drug peddlers and users were so smart and desperate they could easily con or compromise anybody.

Dr. Ohanyere told them they didn’t have to be experts or have the professional ability to detect banned or illicit drugs, but just be on the lookout for unusual packages or suspicious conducts of consignees of parcels.
These, be said, always gave enough indication that something was “fishy”, and therefore prompt the affected staff to be more inquisitive.

“Normal, usual diligence in the course of duty should be sufficient for you all as staff, but you just need to corporate with us at any point we get interested or involved in the movement of any suspected consignment”, he said.
Guest Lecturer and Principal Staff Officer Drug Demand Reduction Unit, Enugu NDLEA command, Eyeuche Ome Adjai, urged transport and courier companies to be vigilant as “some of these companies have become distributing agents for illicit drug traffickers in the country though most times ignorantly”.
“This has implications on the companies because the position of the law is very clear concerning the use of common couriers to traffic illicit drugs”.

Business / Indigenous Brand Sea Horse Lubricant Wins Manual Transmission Oil Award For 2018 by Visagemedia(m): 9:20am On Oct 25, 2018
The Chief Executive Officer of Sea Horse Industries Limited HRM Ebuka Onunkwo, has assured that his company would not compromise its standard in lubricating oil production.

Onunkwo said his company would always strive to maintain the standard it had set in the oil sector.

Sea Horse Lubricant is an indigenous brand manufactured in Ozubulu, Anambra State.

He stated this in Lagos on Monday shortly after his company won the Manual Transmission oil award for 2018 at the occasion of IOGRHS annual Oil and Gas Product Forum, held at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Ikeja.

This year's event was tagged, ‘ Oil and Gas Product Manufacturing: Prospects , Challenges and Progress.'

The organisers had earlier revealed that the award was in recognition of the industry’s ability to produce local lubricants with good quality with international standard.

Onunkwo, while receiving the award, noted that the honour on his company was a boost "for further dedication, for the good of Nigeria and benefit to mankind."

He, therefore, dedicated the award to members of his staff for their relentless efforts in making Sea Horse industries a force to reckon with in lubricant oil production.

Interestingly, Onunkwo revealed that his company has contributed to the nation’s economy by way of job creation, which has helped to reduce the number of the teeming jobless youths on the streets.

The CEO further hinted that efforts were still on to achieve the target of being the best lubricant industry in Africa before 2028, adding that the company was presently producing 24 million litres per annum, he however, expressed hope that it would expand with time.

“ The oil is blended locally in Nigeria, we have a mega plant in Ozubulu, Anambra State and we have expatriates who are among our staff working for us. All our machines are made in Turkey and they are all installed here in the factory by the citizens of Turkey who have trained our people that are doing well in that area today.

“It is worthy to note that we are not competing or aiming at competing with companies in Nigeria, or to copy them. To remain relevant in this industry, quality is our watch word and that is what we stand for . What I am producing in Nigeria today, is better in terms of quality than what I was importing”

"So far, we have surpassed the standard. If everybody in the lubricant industry in Nigeria abides by the standard of SON as Seahorse does, Nigeria will be free from recycled used oil”.
