# *VGN CONCLUDES ADVANCED BASIC AND INTELLIGENCE TRAINING AS OFFICERS SEEK STRONGER ROLE IN NIGERIA'S SECURITY ARCHITECTURE*


POLICE COLLEGE, IKEJA, LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA — The Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), Lagos State Command, has concluded its week-long Advanced Basic and Intelligence Training, with participants reaffirming their commitment to community policing and intelligence-driven security operations while calling on the Federal Government to formally integrate the organisation into Nigeria's security architecture.

The intensive training programme, held at the Police College, Ikeja, brought together VGN officers from Lagos State and other commands across the country for classroom lectures, intelligence sessions, combat drills, self-defence exercises, parade drills and practical field operations aimed at improving their operational capacity.

The final day featured a ceremonial parade, practical demonstrations and goodwill messages from senior VGN officers, who described the programme as another milestone in strengthening grassroots security and collaboration with conventional security agencies.

Speaking with VONNews, the Deputy Commander General and guest speaker, Emmanuel Ayisire, described the Vigilante Group of Nigeria as one of the country's foremost community-based security organisations, noting that its greatest strength lies in its presence within local communities.

According to him, VGN members possess first-hand knowledge of their communities, making them valuable partners in intelligence gathering and crime prevention.

> "The Vigilante Group of Nigeria is rooted in the communities. We understand the terrain, the culture and the people. That is why nothing significant happens within our communities without our members becoming aware of it. This is a unique advantage in combating insecurity," he said.

Ayisire appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to deepen Nigeria's security architecture by giving greater recognition to the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, stressing that community policing cannot succeed without the active participation of grassroots security organisations.

He maintained that while discussions on state policing continue, community-based security outfits such as the VGN remain indispensable to effective intelligence gathering and crime prevention.

The Lagos State Commandant of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, Commandant Opeyemi Tajudeen Saka, expressed satisfaction with the successful completion of the training, describing it as a major investment in professionalism, discipline and operational excellence.

In an interview with VONNews, Saka urged newly trained officers to uphold the values of integrity, professionalism and respect for the rule of law in the discharge of their responsibilities.

He also applauded the ongoing reconciliation within the South-West leadership of the organisation, describing unity as critical to achieving greater recognition and institutional support.

> "Today, we are speaking with one voice. Unity has strengthened our organisation, and we believe it will also strengthen our engagement with government and other security stakeholders," he said.

The Assistant Group Commandant (Administration), Alhaji Owolabi Amusat, said the training represented the sixth advanced programme organised by the Lagos State Command, adding that participants had demonstrated remarkable discipline and commitment throughout the exercise.

He expressed confidence that the knowledge acquired during the training would improve administrative efficiency, intelligence gathering and operational performance across various VGN commands.

Speaking with VONNews, the Assistant Group Commandant (South-West Zone), Aree Shola Shodiyan, emphasised the importance of unity within the organisation, noting that the harmonisation of VGN leadership across the South-West had strengthened collaboration and positioned the organisation for greater national relevance.

He called on the Federal Government to recognise the Vigilante Group of Nigeria as a strategic partner in addressing the country's security challenges.

Also speaking, Julius Nnamere, Area Commander of Alimosho Division, appreciated the Lagos State Government, the Nigeria Police Force and the leadership of the Police College for supporting the training.

He said the intelligence programme had further equipped officers with the knowledge required to complement conventional security agencies and appealed for the speedy integration of VGN into Nigeria's security framework.

The Head of the Market and Motor Park Department, Olufemi Onayemi, urged newly trained officers to maintain close collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and remain law-abiding while carrying out their duties.

According to him, effective intelligence gathering depends on strong cooperation between community security organisations and conventional law enforcement agencies.

Similarly, Folayan Olatokunbo A., Commander of the Ikorodu Division, described the training as one of the best organised by the command, commending the Nigeria Police Force for exposing participants to intelligence gathering techniques, human rights principles, operational ethics and modern security tactics.

He appealed to the Federal Government to formally recognise the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, noting that such recognition would improve the morale of officers and strengthen community policing across the country.

The training concluded with participants pledging to apply the knowledge acquired in their various communities while maintaining professionalism, discipline and respect for human rights.

As officers departed the Police College, Ikeja, the recurring message remained clear: stronger collaboration between government, conventional security agencies and community-based security organisations is essential to addressing Nigeria's evolving security challenges.

Addressing officers during the training, the Lagos State Commandant of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, Commandant Opeyemi Tajudeen Saka, expressed appreciation to the Nigeria Police Force for its continued partnership, professional guidance and support towards the successful conduct of the training.

# HISTORIC! UNILAG INDUCTS OVER 400 INTO ECAN AS PRESIDENT DECLARES EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION THE FOUNDATION OF NIGERIA'S FUTURE

LAGOS — The Early Childhood Association of Nigeria (ECAN) has recorded one of the biggest membership induction exercises in its history following the induction of over 400 graduating and postgraduate students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), in a landmark ceremony that stakeholders described as a major boost to the professionalisation of Early Childhood Education in Nigeria.

The historic induction, held at the University of Lagos on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, also witnessed the admission of three senior professionals into the Association—two on the Professional Cadre and one Professor—bringing together academics, researchers, ECAN Fellows, past national executives, education stakeholders, students and invited guests in celebration of a new chapter for the Association.

The event marked several significant milestones for ECAN. Besides recording one of the Association's largest single institutional membership drives, it also reinforced the University's position as a leading partner in promoting professionalism within the Early Childhood Education sector.

Delivering his keynote address, the National President of ECAN, Professor F. Taiwo Ogunyemi, described the ceremony as historic for three major reasons.

According to him, the University of Lagos remains the ancestral home of ECAN, where the vision of the Association was first conceived by Professor Ajike Osanyin, whose pioneering efforts laid the foundation for what has become one of Nigeria's foremost professional bodies for Early Childhood Education.

Professor Ogunyemi also noted that the event was his first major public engagement since assuming office as the fifth National President of ECAN after the Association's successful national conference held at the Federal College of Education (Technical), Omoku, Rivers State, in June 2026.

He further described the induction as a strong affirmation of the growing professionalisation of Early Childhood Education in Nigeria, stressing that the sector has continued to gain greater recognition in recent years.

Addressing the newly inducted members, the ECAN President reminded them that their induction was not merely a ceremonial exercise but the beginning of a lifelong professional responsibility.

He said the graduates had officially transitioned from students of pedagogy to recognised practitioners entrusted with nurturing children during the most critical stage of human development.

"The future of Nigeria's education system begins with the strong foundation laid during the early years of children's development," he said, urging the new members to see themselves as ambassadors of quality education and advocates for the rights of every Nigerian child.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Convener of the induction programme and Head of the Department of Social Science Education, Faculty of Education, University of Lagos, Professor Sarah Sopekan, described the ceremony as a landmark achievement for both ECAN and the University.

She congratulated the over 400 graduates and postgraduate students on taking what she described as an important step in their professional journey, noting that membership of ECAN represents a commitment to excellence, ethical conduct, lifelong learning and dedicated service to the advancement of Early Childhood Education in Nigeria and beyond.

Professor Sopekan urged the newly inducted members to become worthy ambassadors of the Association by demonstrating professionalism, integrity, innovation and commitment in their various fields of endeavour.

She encouraged them to contribute meaningfully to children's development, educational research and national development while maintaining the values and ideals of ECAN.

The Head of Department also appreciated the leadership of ECAN for bringing the induction exercise to the University of Lagos, expressing optimism that the initiative would strengthen collaboration between the Association and tertiary institutions in promoting quality Early Childhood Education across the country.

WORLD DAY AGAINST TRAFFICKING: GAHTO RAISES ALARM OVER RISING EXPLOITATION OF NIGERIANS ABROAD

As the world marks the 2026 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons with the theme, "Trapped Behind the Scam," the Founder of the Global Anti Human Trafficking Organization (GAHTO), Prosper Kayode Michael, has called for stronger collaboration among governments, philanthropists, organisations and individuals to intensify the fight against human trafficking in Nigeria, Africa and across the globe.

Speaking to commemorate the global awareness day, Michael expressed concern over the alarming increase in the trafficking of Nigerians to countries across West Africa, North Africa and the Middle East for sexual and labour exploitation.

The anti-human trafficking advocate lamented that despite years of awareness campaigns, many Nigerians continue to fall victim to traffickers who lure them with false promises of lucrative jobs abroad, only to subject them to inhumane conditions.

According to him, many victims trafficked for sexual exploitation are confined in makeshift shelters and forced into prostitution until they repay debts reportedly amounting to about ₦4 million, while those trafficked for labour exploitation are compelled to work for more than two years before regaining their freedom.

He warned Nigerians to be wary of agents promising travel opportunities to Libya, Egypt and Iraq, as well as those facilitating movement to some West African countries for sexual exploitation.

Michael disclosed that since the beginning of 2026, GAHTO has rescued several victims from sexual exploitation in different West African countries, including Libya and Egypt.

He also raised concern over the plight of Nigerians allegedly trapped in a camp known as Oshofana in Libya, where victims are reportedly forced to contact their families to pay ransoms ranging from ₦2 million to ₦3 million before they can regain their freedom.

Speaking further, the GAHTO founder said many Nigerians stranded in Egypt and Iraq have become increasingly vulnerable, with many expressing a strong desire to return home but lacking the financial means to purchase return tickets.

According to him, many of the victims are left with no option but to appeal to relatives and well-meaning Nigerians for assistance, describing the situation as both heartbreaking and embarrassing.

He advised parents to pay closer attention to their children, especially young girls, by maintaining open and trusting relationships that would encourage them to speak up whenever anyone approaches them with offers of travelling abroad.

Michael also cautioned young men against fraudulent employment schemes, particularly those linked to QNET, alleging that many Nigerian youths have been trafficked to countries such as Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Senegal under the guise of job opportunities. He noted that some victims sold their businesses to finance the trips, only to end up stranded.

While acknowledging that every Nigerian has the constitutional right to migrate, he stressed the importance of following legal migration channels to avoid becoming victims of human trafficking in the pursuit of greener pastures.

The GAHTO founder noted that many victims are currently stranded abroad and desperately seeking assistance to return to Nigeria, calling for stronger collaboration from government agencies, development partners and well-meaning individuals to facilitate their rescue and reintegration.

Using this year's World Day Against Trafficking in Persons as a platform, Michael appealed to philanthropists, corporate organisations and relevant stakeholders to support GAHTO's campaigns against human trafficking through public sensitisation, awareness creation, rescue operations, rehabilitation and empowerment of survivors.

He emphasised that rescue alone is not enough, stressing that sustainable empowerment programmes are essential to prevent survivors from falling victim to traffickers again.

"Our job is not complete if there is no empowerment after rescue," he said. "Some rescued victims have been re-trafficked because of their vulnerability and lack of sustainable means of livelihood. They cannot rebuild their lives on promises alone; they need tangible support after rescue."

Michael also commended the Plateau State Government and the Berom Community for their continuous intervention and unwavering support for victims of human trafficking.

He expressed hope that other state governments would emulate Plateau State by responding promptly whenever called upon to assist in the rescue and rehabilitation of their citizens trapped in trafficking networks.

"I want to use this opportunity to thank the Plateau State Government and the Berom Community for their intervention and consistent support for victims of human trafficking. I sincerely hope other state governments will do the same whenever they are called upon to support the rescue and rehabilitation of their citizens," he said.

He maintained that the fight against human trafficking requires collective responsibility, stressing that civil society organisations cannot tackle the menace alone.

"We cannot do it alone without the necessary support of the state governments where these victims come from. Their collaboration is critical to ensuring the successful rescue, rehabilitation, reintegration and protection of trafficking survivors."

Michael reaffirmed GAHTO's commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and called for greater collaboration among governments, security agencies, development partners and the public to eradicate human trafficking and restore hope to survivors.

POLICE COLLEGE, IKEJA, LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA — The Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), Lagos State Command, has intensified its Advanced Basic and Intelligence Training with practical combat exercises, self-defence techniques and extended parade drills as the programme entered its third day.

The exercise, held at the Police College, Ikeja, is aimed at strengthening the operational capacity, discipline and intelligence-gathering capabilities of VGN personnel as part of efforts to enhance grassroots security and complement the operations of conventional security agencies.

Activities on the third day focused on combat readiness, tactical movement, self-defence, physical fitness, parade drills and practical field exercises designed to prepare officers for real-life security operations.

Speaking with VONNews, the Commander of Sports and Training, Superintendent Austin Jooda, described the training as comprehensive, noting that it combines both theoretical and practical approaches to modern security operations.

He commended the Lagos State Commandant, Commandant Opeyemi Tajudeen Saka, the command administration and other officers for organising what he described as a well-structured training programme.

Jooda also appreciated the Inspector-General of Police and the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force for providing an enabling environment for the exercise.

According to him, participants have benefited from lectures on intelligence gathering, human rights, the rule of law and community policing, alongside rigorous physical and combat training.

> "The instructors have done an excellent job. The knowledge we have acquired here will be taken back to our various commands and communities to strengthen intelligence gathering and improve security across the country," he said.

In an interview with VONNews, Jooda stressed that the Vigilante Group of Nigeria remains one of the closest community-based security organisations to the people, making it well-positioned to provide timely intelligence capable of preventing criminal activities before they escalate.

He said the organisation has continued to support the Nigeria Police Force, the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other security agencies through intelligence gathering and community policing.

Highlighting the practical aspect of the training, Jooda explained that participants underwent intensive self-defence sessions aimed at equipping officers with techniques for safely restraining suspects while applying only the minimum force necessary.

> "Our officers begin training early in the morning and continue until evening. Their commitment has been outstanding. We are preparing them to respond professionally, protect lives and carry out their responsibilities with discipline and respect for the law," he said.

The Sports and Training Commander appealed to the Federal Government to provide greater institutional support for the Vigilante Group of Nigeria through improved funding, operational equipment, logistics and welfare packages.

He further appealed for the passage and implementation of policies that would strengthen the organisation's operations, improve the morale of officers and provide greater support for members who continue to serve voluntarily despite the risks associated with the job.

*"We're Ready To Secure Nigeria"*: *VGN SEEKS FEDERAL RECOGNITION, PAYROLL INCLUSION AS LAGOS HOLDS ADVANCED INTELLIGENCE TRAINING*


POLICE COLLEGE, IKEJA, LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA — The Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), Lagos State Command, has reaffirmed its readiness to play a more prominent role in Nigeria's security architecture, calling on the Federal Government to formally recognise the organisation, integrate qualified operatives into the nation's security framework and place them on the government payroll.

The appeal was made during the Advanced Basic and Intelligence Training organised for VGN officers at the Police College, Ikeja, where VONNews monitored the exercise and interviewed senior officials of the organisation on its operational capacity, achievements and commitment to strengthening community security across Nigeria.

Addressing participants, the Assistant Group Commandant (Administration), Lagos State Command, Alhaji Owolabi Amusat, described the exercise as the fifth advanced training programme organised by the command to sharpen the intelligence, discipline and operational efficiency of its personnel.

He said continuous retraining remains vital in preparing security operatives to tackle emerging security threats and evolving criminal tactics.

> "Learning never ends in security operations. We organise these retraining programmes to improve the competence of our officers and ensure they remain disciplined, professional and ready for every assignment," he said.

In an interview with VONNews after his presentation, Amusat said the Vigilante Group of Nigeria has operational structures across the Federal Capital Territory, the 36 states and all 774 local government areas, making it one of the country's largest grassroots security organisations.

According to him, the organisation works closely with the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Department of State Services (DSS), the Armed Forces and other security agencies in intelligence gathering, crime prevention and community policing.

Responding to a question from VONNews on why the organisation is seeking formal government recognition despite existing security agencies, Amusat said the VGN is not seeking to replace any agency but rather to complement their efforts through its extensive community presence.

> "We understand the terrain because we are members of the communities we serve. Our officers gather useful intelligence at the grassroots and assist other security agencies in maintaining peace and order. We believe formal recognition will strengthen collaboration and improve national security," he said.

He further disclosed that the Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, has provided operational vehicles to support the command's activities, expressing optimism that the organisation would be considered in any future state policing structure.

When asked by VONNews about the organisation's operational capabilities, particularly regarding the use of firearms, Amusat explained that VGN operatives are authorised to use licensed light firearms in line with the law and in collaboration with recognised security agencies.

The Lagos State Surveillance Officer of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, Dr. Archbishop Elijah Adekunle Oderinlo (JP), also told VONNews that the current exercise was one of several specialised training programmes organised to improve the professionalism of the organisation's personnel.

He noted that VGN officers have, over the years, undergone professional training facilitated by the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and other security institutions.

> "Our officers understand the terrain because they are part of the communities they protect. That gives us an advantage in intelligence gathering and early detection of criminal activities. We are always ready to work with other security agencies," he said.

While speaking with VONNews, Oderinlo appealed to the Federal Government to formally recognise the organisation, noting that many VGN operatives have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty without salaries, insurance or adequate welfare.

> "Many of our members have paid the ultimate price while serving their communities. We remain committed to protecting lives and property, but recognition and improved welfare will further motivate our personnel to give even more to national security," he added.

Also speaking with VONNews, the Area Commander of Alimosho, Julius Nnamere, appealed to the Federal Government to officially recognise the organisation, noting that the VGN has consistently supported security operations since 1999 despite operating largely on voluntary service.

He expressed confidence that the current administration would consider the organisation's request in view of the country's growing security challenges.

The Commander in charge of Motor Parks, Garages and Markets, Iwis Kudupemi Onoyemi, described the Vigilante Group of Nigeria as a practical example of community policing.

In an interview with VONNews, he explained that security personnel who are familiar with their environment can more easily identify suspicious movements and criminal elements than officers newly deployed from outside the community.

> "Criminals live within our communities. Those of us who know the environment can quickly identify unusual activities and provide timely intelligence that helps prevent crime," he said.

Highlighting some of the organisation's operational achievements, the Deputy State Commander in charge of Operations, Ayede Santos, recounted the VGN's role during the kidnapping incidents around the Iba and Ojo waterways in Lagos State.

Speaking with VONNews, Santos said VGN operatives responded immediately after receiving distress information, pursued the kidnappers into the waterways and collaborated with other security agencies during rescue operations that led to the successful recovery of the victims.

He maintained that the organisation has consistently demonstrated courage, professionalism and commitment despite limited government support.

> "It is not about making claims before the media. The people know what we have done. Whenever our communities are threatened, our officers respond without hesitation. We are ready to do even more if given the necessary support," he said.

Throughout the training, participants emphasised that Nigeria's security challenges require stronger collaboration between conventional security agencies and community-based organisations with deep knowledge of local communities.

They unanimously appealed to the Federal Government to formally integrate qualified VGN operatives into the country's security architecture, arguing that such recognition would improve accountability, strengthen intelligence gathering and boost community policing nationwide.

The officers also called for improved welfare packages, insurance cover, operational equipment and logistics for members who continue to serve despite the enormous risks associated with community security operations.

Bringing the training to a close, the Lagos State VGN Training Officer, Igwe Moses, issued a strong warning to criminal elements, urging them to abandon unlawful activities.

Speaking with VONNews after the training, Moses said the organisation remains fully prepared to work alongside other security agencies in combating crime and protecting lives and property.

> "No matter where criminals hide, we will continue to support security agencies in tracking them down. Our duty is to protect our communities, and we remain committed to that responsibility," he said.

The Advanced Basic and Intelligence Training concluded with practical intelligence sessions, tactical drills and renewed calls for stronger government support, enhanced collaboration with security agencies and formal recognition of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria as a strategic partner in Nigeria's fight against insecurity.

## Alleged Trump Commendation Letter to Tinubu Sparks Fresh Controversy as US Commentator Demands Release of Original Document

A fresh controversy has erupted over a purported letter of commendation allegedly sent by United States President Donald J. Trump to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following claims by a United States political strategist and international affairs commentator, Dr. Karl Von Batten, that the document's authenticity should be verified.

Dr. Batten, who described himself as a close ally of President Trump, raised concerns after comparing the purported letter circulated by the PBAT Media Centre Facebook account with what he said was a verified letter sent by President Trump to Argentine President Javier Milei.

Reacting in a post on X, Dr. Batten stated: "A Tale of Two Letters: On the left, we have an actual copy of President @realDonaldTrump's letter to Argentine President @JMilei. On the right, we have what an account linked to President Tinubu, using the Facebook handle @PBATMediaCentre, has posted as President Trump's letter to President Tinubu. The difference is beyond clear."

According to him, the letter allegedly addressed to President Tinubu, dated July 6, 2026, was published only in text format without a scanned copy of the original document, the White House seal, or President Trump's signature, unlike the letter sent to President Milei.

Speaking further, Dr. Batten stressed that he was not claiming that no diplomatic correspondence had been sent to President Tinubu or that the President personally fabricated the document.

"We are not saying that a standard diplomatic response letter was never sent to President Tinubu. Nor are we saying that President Tinubu fabricated the purported letter," he said.

However, he described the manner in which the alleged letter was published as unusual, arguing that diplomatic correspondence is typically released as an image of the signed document rather than as typed text containing the date and signature block.

Dr. Batten further claimed that the timing of the publication had raised questions, alleging that it coincided with reports of discussions in political circles in Washington, D.C., regarding longstanding allegations involving President Tinubu. He did not provide evidence to support that assertion.

He also drew comparisons with the 2023 controversy surrounding alleged "fake bishops" during Nigeria's presidential election campaign, suggesting that the latest development deserved closer scrutiny.

According to Dr. Batten, he intends to forward the published text to contacts in Washington, D.C., for verification, expressing confidence that the White House would clarify whether the purported letter was authentic.

As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency had not publicly responded to Dr. Batten's claims, while the White House had also not issued any official statement regarding the authenticity of the alleged letter.

Multiple Crashes Claim One Life, Injure Two on Kara Bridge as FRSC Diverts Motorists

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Sector Command, has advised motorists to use alternative routes following multiple road traffic crashes on Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in the early hours of Friday, July 24, 2026.

According to the command, the first crash occurred at about 12:05 a.m. on the outbound carriageway towards Ibadan, involving five articulated trucks and one Toyota Sienna vehicle.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the crash was caused by excessive speed and loss of control.

A total of seven adult males were involved in the accident. One person died, another sustained injuries, while five others escaped unhurt.

The FRSC disclosed that the body of the deceased remains trapped beneath one of the heavily loaded trucks due to its position, with heavy-duty recovery equipment deployed to facilitate evacuation.

While rescue and recovery efforts were still underway, another crash occurred at about 3:15 a.m. on the inbound carriageway towards Lagos involving a Mazda commercial bus.

The lone accident was attributed to brake failure, leaving the driver seriously injured. The victim was rescued by the FRSC emergency response team and taken to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre for treatment.

The Corps said its rescue team, alongside the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and other emergency responders, is working to evacuate the crashed vehicles, recover the trapped victim, clear the obstruction and restore free flow of traffic.

Reacting to the incident, the Lagos Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde Ganiyu Hamzat, sympathised with the families of the victims and urged motorists plying the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to remain patient, exercise caution and cooperate with traffic management officials at the scene.

He also advised road users to avoid the Kara–Ojodu Berger corridor where possible until recovery operations are completed.

According to the command, motorists travelling from Lagos towards Ibadan are advised to divert through the Ikorodu-Sagamu route, while those heading into Lagos should consider alternative entry routes via the Lekki-Epe Expressway or the Ikorodu-Sagamu Expressway.

The FRSC further reminded motorists, particularly drivers of articulated vehicles and commercial buses, to ensure their vehicles are mechanically sound before embarking on any journey, with special attention to braking systems.

The command also urged drivers to avoid unnecessary night journeys, especially during periods of poor visibility caused by darkness, rain or fog. Where night travel is unavoidable, motorists were advised to reduce speed, maintain safe following distances, avoid dangerous overtaking and stop to rest whenever they feel fatigued.

The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of all road users, assuring that it would continue working with relevant emergency and traffic management agencies to restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible.

2027: Youth Movement Launches Massive APC Membership Drive, PVC Campaign in Lagos

The Youth Likeminds for KOH/DSJ (YLH) has officially inaugurated its grassroots movement with a renewed commitment to strengthening the All Progressives Congress (APC) through aggressive membership registration, Permanent Voter Card (PVC) sensitisation and grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

The inauguration, PVC sensitisation programme and award presentation held at the Sanwo-Olu Campaign Office, Iyana-Ishasi, Lagos, drew APC leaders, elected and appointed public office holders, traditional and community leaders, youth and women groups, professionals, academics, political support groups and party faithful from across Badagry Division and other parts of Lagos State.

Speaking at the event, the Coordinator and Convener of Youth Likeminds for KOH/DSJ, Hon. Princess Akapo Oluwabunmi Moyinoluwa, described the group as an inclusive grassroots movement established to mobilise support for the progressive vision of Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat (KOH) and Hon. Dipo Shobowale Johnson (DSJ) through youth engagement, voter education, community mobilisation and active civic participation.

Addressing the theme, “Strengthening Our Party Through Membership Registration and Grassroots Mobilisation,” she said a strong political party is built on committed members and vibrant grassroots structures.

According to her, the first phase of the campaign focuses on newly registered voters through sustained community engagement and voter education aimed at encouraging young people to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and actively participate in the democratic process.

She urged eligible Nigerians to register as members of the APC, collect their PVCs and encourage others to do the same, stressing that democracy thrives when citizens actively participate in elections.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of Progressives in Academics (Pro-Academics), Dr. Fowowe Simeon Sunday underscored the importance of civic education, political enlightenment and responsible participation in strengthening democracy and promoting sustainable national development.

He called on young Nigerians to embrace constructive political engagement, reject violence and misinformation, and contribute meaningfully to evidence-based governance.

2026 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons Approaches: Survivors Recount Ordeal as GAHTO, NAPTIP Rescue More Victims from Côte d'Ivoire

As the world marks the 2026 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, several survivors of human trafficking have shared harrowing accounts of how they were deceived with promises of employment and better living conditions abroad, only to end up trapped in forced labour, prostitution and sexual exploitation.

The survivors, who spoke in separate interviews with VON News after regaining their freedom, narrated how traffickers exploited poverty, unemployment and their desire for a better future to lure them out of Nigeria.

Among them are Monica, 17, an Idoma by tribe from Benue State, and Juliet, 18, a Tiv indigene of Benue State. Both were residing in Kaduna before they were allegedly trafficked to Côte d'Ivoire with promises of bakery jobs.

Monica said she was approached by a woman identified as Peace, who offered her employment in a bakery in Abuja. Believing the offer was genuine, she informed her parents before embarking on the journey with two other young women.

According to her, the trio travelled to Lagos, where another woman identified as Blessing received them and informed them that the job was no longer in Nigeria but in Côte d'Ivoire.

The victims became suspicious when they were told only two of them would travel first while the third remained behind. Concerned by the arrangement, the third girl alerted the police in Lagos, leading to the temporary arrest of the recruiter.

Despite the intervention, Monica and Juliet had already crossed into Côte d'Ivoire, where they were taken through remote communities before being locked inside a room by their handlers.

The teenagers alleged that they were instructed to tell anyone who contacted them, including Nigerian police, that they were safe and not being mistreated. During a phone conversation with her mother, one of the girls broke down in tears before the phone was seized by the traffickers.

They said they were later forced into labour despite not speaking French and were told they had to work to raise money for their return to Nigeria, while unexplained deductions were constantly made from whatever they earned.

Determined to regain their freedom, the girls escaped while their handlers were asleep with the assistance of sympathetic locals. They later established communication with a GAHTO representative using another woman's phone, after which arrangements were made for someone to escort them to a safe location. They eventually reached government officials in Djiboroso, Côte d'Ivoire, who reportedly rejected attempts by the traffickers to secure their release and instead handed them over to security authorities, paving the way for their eventual return to Nigeria.

Another survivor, Monica Tamah, 38, a mother of five from Zakibiam in Benue State, narrated how financial hardship pushed her into accepting an offer to travel abroad after she was promised a legitimate job that would enable her provide for her family.

She said her 22-year-old daughter, Joy Teseh, had completed secondary school and hoped to continue her education but was unable to do so because of financial constraints. Although family members encouraged her to marry, she insisted on pursuing higher education, a situation that further motivated her mother to seek better economic opportunities abroad.

However, upon arriving in Côte d'Ivoire, Monica said they discovered they had been recruited into prostitution instead of the promised jobs.

According to her, the traffickers informed them that they had incurred a debt for the cost of transporting them to Côte d'Ivoire and would have to repay it through prostitution.

She alleged that she and other victims were forced to have sex with as many as 15 men daily, generating about 50,000 CFA francs each day for their traffickers while receiving little or no money themselves.

Monica said she remained in captivity for about six months before she was rescued through the intervention of the Global Anti Human Trafficking Organisation (GAHTO) and partner agencies.

Another survivor, Rejoice Emmanuel, 25, also from Zakibiam in Benue State, recounted how she was deceived with promises of a better life abroad before being subjected to sexual exploitation and abuse.

The survivors said they never imagined that what was presented as an opportunity for legitimate employment would end in prostitution and modern-day slavery.

> "We never knew that the journey we embarked on would end in prostitution and sex slavery in another country," one of the survivors said.

The rescued victims include Monica, Juliet, Rejoice Emmanuel, Joy Teseh and Monica Tamah. Monica is of Idoma extraction, while Juliet, Rejoice Emmanuel, Joy Teseh and Monica Tamah are of Tiv extraction from Benue State. Monica and Juliet had been residing in Kaduna State before their ordeal.

According to GAHTO, the rescue operation was carried out in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and authorities in Côte d'Ivoire.

The NAPTIP Lagos Zonal Command contacted Prosper K. Michael, Founder of GAHTO, to facilitate the rescue of Monica and Juliet after intelligence confirmed their location in Djiboroso, Côte d'Ivoire.

The victims were rescued by Mr. Oluwaseun Odusanya, GAHTO Representative in Côte d'Ivoire, with the support of Mr. Baro Séri, the Sous-Préfet of Djiboroso Commune, Kani Department, Worodougou Region, who ensured the victims' safety following the operation.

They were subsequently received at the Centre Social de Tengréla in the Bagoué Region by Mr. Kouadio N'Guessan, Director of the Social Centre, while Mr. Odusanya—who also serves as Chairman of the Nigerian Community in Bagoué Region—coordinated arrangements for their safe return to Nigeria.

Similarly, three other victims from Benue State were rescued in Boundiali, also in the Bagoué Region of Côte d'Ivoire, in another operation coordinated by GAHTO and its partners.

The organisation described the successful operations as another significant breakthrough in its sustained campaign against human trafficking and the protection of vulnerable Nigerians across West Africa.

The survivors' testimonies highlight the evolving tactics employed by trafficking syndicates, which continue to target women, teenagers and unemployed youths with false promises of jobs, education and financial security abroad.

Anti-human trafficking advocates have urged Nigerians to verify overseas employment and migration offers through appropriate government channels, remain vigilant against suspicious recruiters and promptly report suspected trafficking activities to law enforcement agencies.

They also called for stronger collaboration among governments, security agencies and international partners to dismantle trafficking networks, rescue victims and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice.

# Youth Group Defends Voter Mobilisation Strategy, Says Transport Support Is Not Vote Buying


Ahead of its Inauguration Ceremony and Voter Card Sensitisation Programme scheduled for Thursday, July 23, 2026, Youth Likeminds for KOH/DSJ (YLH) has defended its voter mobilisation strategy, insisting that financial assistance provided to newly registered voters is strictly meant to cover transportation costs and should not be misconstrued as vote buying.

The clarification was made during a press conference held in Badagry Division, Lagos State, where the group outlined its objectives and activities aimed at increasing youth participation in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at the briefing, Hon. Princess Oluwabunmi Moyinoluwa Akapo, Supervisor for Women Affairs and Girl Child, Oto-Awori Local Council Development Area (LCDA), said the organisation was established to encourage newly registered voters, particularly young people, to actively participate in Nigeria's democratic process.

She stressed that obtaining a Permanent Voter's Card (PVC) is essential for citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote and participate in governance, adding that the group's grassroots campaign is designed to mobilise more eligible voters in support of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Also speaking, Comrade Ayokun Taiwo said the initiative is focused on reaching young people who have never been actively involved in political or party activities.

According to him, the youth constitute the largest voting bloc in Nigeria, making it necessary for fellow youths to engage and mobilise them in a language they understand.

> "Our organisation is completely grassroots-oriented. We are taking the campaign to the streets to bring young people who have not been politically involved before into the democratic process by encouraging them to register and participate," he said.

The group said its goal is to mobilise support for all APC candidates in the 2027 general elections, from the presidency to the governorship, National Assembly and State House of Assembly elections.

Members also highlighted several initiatives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration, including the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), major road infrastructure projects, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and other developmental programmes, which they said would form part of their voter sensitisation campaign.

Responding to questions on reports that newly registered voters receive stipends, Hon. Akapo dismissed suggestions of vote buying, explaining that the financial support is solely intended to reimburse transportation expenses incurred by individuals travelling to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) registration centres.

According to her, many residents travel long distances to register, making transportation assistance necessary to encourage wider participation in the voter registration exercise.

Supporting her position, Comrade Ayokun Taiwo noted that the nearest INEC registration office serving many residents in the area is located in Ibeju, making transportation costs a challenge for prospective registrants.

He maintained that the assistance is aimed solely at encouraging voter registration and not at influencing voting decisions.

The group also responded to concerns over voter intimidation and ethnic tensions witnessed during previous elections in Lagos State.

Its leaders assured that their mobilisation strategy would be based on peaceful engagement, persuasion and civic education rather than coercion. They said they would encourage participation by showcasing the achievements of elected APC officials instead of using threats or intimidation.

Also present at the press briefing was Comrade Kehinde Akeem, alongside other executive members of the organisation, who reaffirmed the group's commitment to grassroots mobilisation, peaceful political participation and youth inclusion.

The executives further emphasised that Youth Likeminds for KOH/DSJ (YLH) is an inclusive organisation whose leadership and membership reflect Nigeria's diversity, comprising people from different ethnic backgrounds, including Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Kanuri and other minority groups.

According to the group, equal representation, unity and inclusiveness remain central to its operations as it intensifies preparations for its inauguration and voter card sensitisation programme while mobilising support ahead of the 2027 general elections.

IGP Monitoring Unit Under Fire as Victoria Creek Gardens Land-Grabbing Probe Drags, Disputed Property Allegedly Still Being Marketed


The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit has come under fresh scrutiny over the pace of investigations into an alleged land-grabbing case involving disputed developed property within Victoria Creek Gardens (VCG) Estate in Rivers State, amid allegations that the property at the centre of the dispute is still being developed, advertised and marketed despite an ongoing police investigation.

The controversy, which revolves around allegations of forceful takeover of developed properties, wanton destruction of buildings, criminal trespass, intimidation of landowners, carting away of building materials and the alleged illegal marketing of disputed landed assets within Victoria Creek Gardens, has continued to raise concerns among the complainants, who insist that the prolonged investigation has allowed activities on the disputed property to continue without interruption.

Investigations by VON News reveal that despite several petitions, repeated meetings with senior police officers and the eventual reassignment of the case to another investigative team within the IGP Monitoring Unit, the complainants allege that little progress has been made while developments on the disputed property have continued.

According to the complainants, the matter was transferred to the IGP Monitoring Unit in Abuja after they lost confidence in the manner in which the case was previously handled by police authorities in Rivers State.

One of the principal complainants, Hon. Dr. Chris, alleged that investigations conducted in Port Harcourt in 2025 failed to produce meaningful results, prompting him to seek intervention from the IGP Monitoring Unit.

He maintained that his objective has never been to negotiate the sale of his property but to ensure that the criminal allegations arising from the dispute are thoroughly investigated and prosecuted where sufficient evidence exists.

According to him, his developed property measuring more than 10,000 square metres, comprising a bungalow, perimeter fence, gatehouse and other improvements, was allegedly demolished before the land was cleared and prepared for resale.

He further alleged that he had been subjected to sustained pressure over the years to surrender the property in exchange for compensation he described as grossly inadequate.

The complainant also alleged that during proceedings at the IGP Monitoring Unit, the principal suspect, Mr. Michael Amadi-Orwu, threatened that he would either sell the property or lose everything. He further claimed that the suspect openly appealed to police officers handling the matter to persuade him to sell the disputed property.

“I approached law enforcement because I am not interested in selling my property under duress or intimidation,” the complainant said.

“My position has always been that I want to retain my legally acquired property and not be forced out by persons seeking to take over land through intimidation.”

The complainant further alleged that the suspect was earlier arrested and detained before being granted bail.

According to him, rather than commencing criminal proceedings as requested, investigators allegedly advised that the dispute could only be resolved if he agreed to sell the property to the suspect.

He described the suggestion as unacceptable, insisting that such an approach defeated the very reason he sought police intervention.

The dispute is said to have escalated after the complainants alleged that the suspect continued to enter the disputed property, carry out developments and market portions of the land while investigations were still ongoing.

Earlier reports by VON News revealed that the complainants repeatedly met with senior officers of the IGP Monitoring Unit over concerns that the investigation had stalled.

During one of the meetings, senior officers reportedly assured the complainants that the case file would be withdrawn from the then Investigating Police Officer (IPO) and his Team Leader for reassignment to another investigative team.

However, the reassignment process allegedly suffered delays after the Team Leader handling the matter reportedly became unreachable.

According to sources familiar with the investigation, the Deputy Head of the Monitoring Unit personally made repeated attempts to contact the Team Leader to facilitate the retrieval of the case file but was unable to reach him as his mobile phones were reportedly switched off.

While the administrative process lingered, the complainants alleged that activities on the disputed property continued unabated.

Another complainant and victim of the alleged demolition exercise, Mr. Greg Sokari, also expressed concern over promotional campaigns linked to Victoria Creek Gardens that continued to circulate on social media, inviting prospective investors to purchase plots within the estate despite the subsisting ownership dispute.

One of the promotional materials reviewed by VON News showed the estate advertising investment opportunities during the Obakor Ikwerre International Convention held in Houston, Texas.

The development has generated fresh outrage among the complainants, who insist that ownership of portions of the property being marketed remains the subject of an ongoing police investigation.

# Diplomatic Tension Looms as Ghanaian Group Asks Mahama to Protect Jonah Capital From Alleged Harassment in Nigeria

ACCRA, Ghana – A Ghanaian advocacy group, Concerned Citizens of Ghana, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to urgently intervene over the alleged treatment of Jonah Capital, a Ghanaian-owned investment company operating in Nigeria.

The group, through its convener, Samuel A. Clark, made the appeal during a press conference in Accra, urging President Mahama, the Chief of Staff, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs to engage the Nigerian government to protect the company's investments and the welfare of Ghanaians working in Nigeria.

Clark said Jonah Capital had operated legally in Nigeria for several years without major issues until recent developments. He recalled that although the company faced challenges in 2025, intervention by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Inspector-General of Police reportedly restored calm, allowing business operations to resume.

However, he alleged that fresh challenges emerged about three weeks ago when officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), accompanied by armed security personnel, entered the company's flagship investment, River Park Estate in Abuja.

According to him, the operation resulted in the destruction of property and the intimidation of staff, residents, and customers.

Clark argued that the matter is already before an international arbitration panel and questioned the use of force while legal and arbitral proceedings remain ongoing.

He further claimed that Nigeria's Attorney-General had previously reviewed allegations of forgery against officials of Jonah Capital, found no basis for prosecution, and directed that the criminal case be withdrawn. The case was subsequently struck out by a High Court in Abuja in January 2026.

Despite the court's decision, Clark alleged that the company has continued to face pressure from another arm of the Nigerian government.

He also claimed that armed men invaded sections of River Park Estate, including the Gallery Clubhouse, damaging company assets, while alleging attempts to unlawfully alter the company's shareholding structure. He expressed concern that reported incidents of assault, intimidation, and destruction of property at the estate have yet to be properly investigated.

Drawing a comparison, Clark noted that several Nigerian-owned banks and businesses continue to operate freely in Ghana and repatriate their profits without interference.

He also cited Ghana's response to the demolition of a building at the Nigerian High Commission in Accra in 2020 as an example of the country's commitment to protecting foreign investments.

The allegations reflect the position of the Concerned Citizens of Ghana. Nigerian authorities have yet to issue an official response to the latest claims.

LAGOS, Nigeria — A lecturer at the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Dr. Fowowe Simeon Sunday, has unveiled a policy brief advocating sweeping reforms to reposition Early Childhood Education (ECE) in Lagos State and across Nigeria, arguing that improving caregiver qualifications alone will not guarantee quality learning outcomes.

The policy document, Policy Brief Series 2026 (Policy Brief No. 001/2026), titled “Strengthening Quality Early Childhood Education in Lagos State and Nigeria: Evidence, Policy Directions and Strategic Actions from a PhD Study on School Caregivers' Professional Development, Job Satisfaction and Teaching Practices in Quality ECE Centres,” is based on findings from Dr. Fowowe's doctoral research.

The study, which involved 868 participants from 62 public pre-primary schools across five Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs) in Lagos State, found that while professional development, job satisfaction and teaching practices are important, they do not independently determine the quality of Early Childhood Education.

Rather, the research identified broader systemic issues—including caregiver welfare, supportive leadership, manageable workloads, adequate infrastructure, effective quality assurance, sound governance and responsiveness to children's developmental needs—as the key factors influencing educational quality.

According to the policy brief, Nigeria must move beyond isolated teacher-training interventions and adopt a comprehensive approach that strengthens every aspect of the Early Childhood Education system.

It describes school caregivers as professionally trained Early Childhood Education teachers equipped with specialised knowledge in play-based learning, guided discovery, observation, scaffolding, differentiated instruction and inclusive education. It further recommends that caregivers possess at least a Diploma, Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) with ECE specialisation, or a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education, supported by continuous professional development and practical classroom experience.

The research is anchored on Bandura's Social Cognitive Learning Theory, Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory, and Hackman and Oldham's Job Characteristics Theory, highlighting the critical role of motivation, organisational support, leadership and conducive working conditions in delivering quality education.

Among its major recommendations are the institutionalisation of practice-based professional development, compulsory annual Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programmes, improved remuneration and welfare packages for caregivers, transparent career progression, leadership training for school administrators, and increased investment in child-friendly classrooms, playgrounds, instructional materials, digital learning resources and inclusive facilities.

The policy brief also advocates the establishment of a dedicated Early Childhood Education Board or Unit, as proposed by the Early Childhood Association of Nigeria (ECAN) and the Association of Early Childhood and Basic Education Instructors in Nigeria (AECBEIN), to strengthen governance, quality assurance and professional development within the sector.

In addition, it urges the Federal Ministry of Education, State Ministries of Education and relevant agencies to institutionalise comprehensive programme evaluations every five years and strengthen partnerships with universities, teacher education institutions and research organisations to ensure education policies are driven by credible research evidence.

Although the study focused on Lagos State, Dr. Fowowe noted that the findings have national relevance, as many states continue to grapple with similar challenges relating to caregiver welfare, infrastructure, instructional resources and weak policy implementation.

He called on governments, school proprietors, development partners, professional associations, parents and communities to work together in building an equitable, inclusive and high-quality Early Childhood Education system.

"Investing in caregivers today is an investment in the future human capital, social cohesion and economic prosperity of Lagos State and Nigeria," the policy brief stated.

Dr. Fowowe Simeon Sunday is a lecturer in the Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education, College of Specialized and Professional Education (COSPED), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED). His research interests include teacher professional development, quality assurance in Early Childhood Education, child-centred pedagogy, educational policy, caregiver effectiveness and foundational learning.

The Policy Brief Series 2026 is intended to provide policymakers, education agencies, school proprietors, teacher educators, researchers and other stakeholders with evidence-based recommendations to strengthen the quality of Early Childhood Education across Nigeria.

Following a successful election, Professor OGUNYEMI TAIWO was inaugurated as ECAN's new National President, pledging to build on the achievements of previous administrations while making the establishment of a National Commission on Early Childhood Education (NCECE) the flagship agenda of her administration.

According to Ogunyemi , the proposed commission would provide a dedicated institutional framework for policy formulation, regulation, quality assurance, research, funding and effective implementation of early childhood education programmes across Nigeria.

She also unveiled her administration's strategic priorities, which include stronger policy advocacy, enhanced collaboration with government agencies and development partners, investment in research and innovation, continuous professional development for teachers and caregivers, institutional strengthening, expansion of ECAN chapters in tertiary institutions, and intensified public awareness on the importance of early childhood education.

The association, in a statement issued on Friday by its National President, Dr. Fowowe Simeon Sunday, expressed gratitude following the safe return of the victims after spending 55 days in captivity since their abduction on May 15, 2026.

The victims were kidnapped from Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

AECBEIN said the successful rescue ended weeks of anxiety and emotional distress experienced by the children, teachers, their families, school communities, and Nigerians who had continued to pray for their safe return.

The association commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the Federal Government's commitment to securing the release of the victims and praised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for his leadership throughout the period.

It also lauded the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Office of the National Security Adviser, local security outfits, intelligence agencies, and community leaders for their professionalism, collaboration, and sacrifices that made the rescue possible.

AECBEIN further acknowledged the resilience of parents, caregivers, school administrators, and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) for sustaining advocacy and hope during the victims' captivity.

While celebrating the release, the association mourned the deaths of two teachers, Mr. Joel Adesiyan and Mr. Michael Oyedokun, who lost their lives during the incident.

It described the deceased as dedicated educators whose sacrifices would never be forgotten, praying for strength and comfort for their bereaved families.

According to the association, the release of the victims marks only the beginning of a new phase focused on healing and recovery.

It warned that many of the rescued children and teachers could be dealing with severe psychological trauma, anxiety, grief, emotional distress, sleep disorders, and post-traumatic stress reactions capable of affecting their education, behaviour, and long-term development if left untreated.

AECBEIN therefore urged the Federal Ministry of Education, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Oyo State Government, the Oyo State Ministry of Health, the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), development partners, and relevant professional bodies to immediately establish a comprehensive rehabilitation programme for all rescued victims.

The association recommended medical examinations, trauma-focused counselling, psychological assessments, cognitive behavioural therapy where necessary, play therapy for younger children, art and music therapy, family and grief counselling, peer support initiatives, and structured school reintegration programmes.

It also stressed the need for continuous monitoring of the victims' emotional, social, cognitive, and academic recovery by qualified psychologists, counsellors, healthcare professionals, and special educators.

For teachers who survived the ordeal, AECBEIN advocated psychosocial support, occupational rehabilitation, stress management interventions, and gradual return-to-work plans based on their medical and psychological fitness.

The association further called for renewed efforts to strengthen school safety nationwide through accelerated implementation of the National Safe Schools Programme, improved intelligence gathering, enhanced security around schools, deployment of trained security personnel to vulnerable communities, installation of surveillance systems where feasible, community-based school protection initiatives, and regular security awareness training for teachers and learners.

Reaffirming its commitment to quality education, AECBEIN maintained that every Nigerian child deserves access to safe and uninterrupted learning, insisting that schools must remain centres of knowledge, hope, and development rather than targets of violence.

The association congratulated the rescued pupils, teachers, and their families on what it described as "a new beginning," urging them to embrace the healing process with courage while assuring them of the nation's continued support.

River Park Dispute: Ghanaian Community Seeks Tinubu, Mahama's Intervention Over JonahCapital Crisis

ABUJA — The National Association of Ghanaian Communities in Nigeria (NAGHACON) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria and President John Mahama of Ghana to urgently intervene in the protracted ownership dispute surrounding River Park Estate in Abuja, warning that the crisis could escalate into a diplomatic issue between the two neighbouring countries if left unresolved.

The association expressed concern over what it described as persistent actions against Ghanaian investment company, JonahCapital, saying the situation could threaten the safety of Ghanaians in Nigeria, weaken confidence in the judicial process and strain the long-standing bilateral relationship between both nations.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Thursday after an inspection of facilities linked to JonahCapital within the estate, NAGHACON President, Lukman Tetteh, alongside the association's General Secretary, Edwards Domfe, said members of the delegation visited the Gallery Clubhouse, the estate gatehouse and other affected locations to assess the situation firsthand.

According to the association, the inspection revealed extensive damage to JonahCapital's facilities, while other businesses operating within the estate were allegedly left untouched.

"We visited the affected locations ourselves and observed significant destruction. From what we saw, other businesses continue to operate without interference, while JonahCapital appears to be the only company facing these actions," the association stated.

NAGHACON recalled that JonahCapital and its directors had previously faced allegations of forgery but were reportedly cleared following investigations conducted by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation.

The group further noted that although an FCT ministerial committee had earlier recognised JonahCapital's interests under the Development Lease Agreement, the matter became contentious after the agreement was declared expired, a decision that is currently being challenged before the court.

According to the association, taking actions against the company while the matter remains before the court could undermine the judicial process and erode confidence in the rule of law.

The group also cautioned against allowing commercial disputes involving foreign investors to fuel hostility or nationalist sentiments, drawing parallels with previous xenophobic incidents in parts of Africa.

It appealed to both Presidents Tinubu and Mahama to ensure that due process is respected, guarantee the safety of Ghanaians associated with the company and allow the courts to determine the ownership dispute without interference.

The appeal comes amid reports alleging that armed policemen attached to the Police Counter Terrorism Unit escorted individuals into the Gallery Clubhouse at River Park Estate, where sections of the entrance were reportedly excavated during an operation.

JonahCapital has since condemned the incident, describing it as an unlawful invasion of its property and calling for a comprehensive investigation into the operation.

The ownership dispute over the multi-billion-naira River Park Estate has remained the subject of multiple court cases and administrative interventions, with both parties continuing to lay claim to aspects of the development.

Lagos, Nigeria – The Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) has called on filmmakers across the country to embrace greater intentionality, technical excellence and strategic planning in order to position Nigerian films for stronger global recognition.

The call was made during the maiden edition of the NOSC Industry Forum 2026, held at Filmhouse Cinemas, Landmark Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, where filmmakers, producers, directors, screenwriters, distributors, exhibitors, investors, students, government agencies and other stakeholders gathered to discuss the future of Nigeria’s film industry.

The forum, themed “From Eligibility to Competitiveness: Building Nigerian Films for Global Recognition,” focused on equipping filmmakers with the knowledge and strategies needed to produce films capable of competing successfully on the international stage, particularly in the International Feature Film category of the Academy Awards.

Delivering the opening address, the Chairperson of the Nigerian Official Selection Committee, Stephanie Linus, challenged filmmakers to shift their focus beyond simply meeting submission requirements.

According to her, the conversation should no longer revolve around how to submit a film for international consideration but rather how to create productions that can compete among the world’s finest.

She explained that while submitting a film is merely a procedural exercise, building globally competitive films requires deliberate commitment to quality, storytelling and technical excellence.

During her keynote presentation titled “The Road to International Feature Film Recognition,” Linus provided participants with detailed insights into the Academy’s eligibility requirements, recent rule updates, qualification pathways, language provisions, theatrical release standards, creative control and technical specifications required for international recognition.

She also emphasised the distinction between producing an eligible film and creating one with genuine award-winning potential.

As part of the forum, participants examined selected internationally acclaimed films through case studies that explored compelling storytelling, directorial vision, production quality, cultural authenticity, festival strategy and international market positioning.

A panel session titled “Lessons from the Journey” brought together filmmakers and industry professionals who have previously participated in Nigeria’s International Feature Film submissions.

The panelists shared their experiences on the challenges encountered after selection, lessons learnt from previous campaigns, the importance of post-production planning and the need for filmmakers to begin preparing for international recognition long before principal photography is completed.

Throughout the discussions, stakeholders stressed the importance of investing in script development, longer production timelines, world-class sound design, post-production, professional subtitling, festival strategies, international collaborations, sustainable financing, effective distribution, publicity and well-structured awards campaigns.

Speakers also addressed misconceptions surrounding international co-productions, explaining that foreign investment or the involvement of international crew members does not automatically determine a film’s country of submission.

Rather, they noted that eligibility depends on factors such as creative leadership, production structure, ownership rights and decision-making authority.

Members of the Nigerian Official Selection Committee further engaged participants on the committee’s selection process, explaining what is considered during evaluations, the difference between eligibility and competitiveness, the importance of technical quality and the support systems needed to strengthen Nigeria’s chances on the global film stage.

Bringing the forum to a close, Linus reaffirmed that Nigeria possesses abundant storytelling talent but must now complement that strength with deliberate planning, collaboration and sustained investment in quality filmmaking.

She maintained that the country’s ambition should extend beyond submitting films for international consideration to producing works capable of standing alongside the best films in the world.

The inaugural NOSC Industry Forum forms part of the committee’s broader effort to promote industry education, encourage collaboration among stakeholders and strengthen the global competitiveness of Nigerian cinema.

# EX-ADMINISTRATOR DISOWNS VIRTUOUS CONCEPTS COOPERATIVE, DISTANCES SELF FROM FINANCIAL DEALINGS


LAGOS — A former Head of Administration of Virtuous Concepts (Ojo) Cooperative Multipurpose Society Limited, Ms. Assumpta Chikwado Umeaku, has formally disowned the cooperative and distanced herself from its financial dealings, obligations and liabilities.

Umeaku made this known in an affidavit of disclaimer sworn before a Notary Public in Lagos State on July 3, 2026.

In the affidavit, Umeaku stated that she was formerly the Head of Administration of Virtuous Concepts (Ojo) Cooperative Multipurpose Society Limited, also identified as V.C.C.M.S., with an office at No. 28/30, Ijegun Road, Oja Bus Stop, beside Libra Motor Park, Ikotun, Lagos State.

She explained that during her time with the organisation, she operated a group within the cooperative under her name, with an account maintained for members of the sub-group.

According to her, she had subsequently settled all financial matters involving members of the sub-group under her supervision.

The affidavit stated: “That as at date, I have settled all financial issues with all members of my Sub-Group.”

Following the purported settlement, Umeaku declared that she had decided to completely dissociate herself from Virtuous Concepts Cooperative.

She further stated that she should not be held liable, accountable or responsible for any financial issues that may have arisen previously or might arise subsequently in connection with the cooperative.

The declaration appears intended to formally place her position on record and separate her personal financial dealings with members of her former sub-group from those of the cooperative society.

Umeaku also stated that the affidavit was made for public consumption, particularly to ensure that members of the public and individuals dealing with the cooperative are aware of her decision to disengage from the organisation.

She affirmed that the declaration was made bona fide and in accordance with the laws governing Notaries Public in Nigeria.

The affidavit was sworn to on July 3, 2026, before solicitor and Notary Public, Dkorba Mukon.

The document does not, in itself, establish the existence of any financial liability against the cooperative, Umeaku or any other individual. Rather, it records Umeaku’s declaration that she had settled financial issues involving members of her former sub-group and no longer wished to be associated with the cooperative.

Her disclaimer could become relevant in any future financial dispute where her former administrative position or association with the cooperative is cited as a basis for liability.

As contained in the sworn document, Umeaku’s position is that her responsibilities concerning members of her former sub-group had been settled and that, following her formal disengagement, she should no longer be held responsible for the cooperative’s financial affairs or obligations.

The affidavit therefore serves as a formal public declaration of her withdrawal from Virtuous Concepts (Ojo) Cooperative Multipurpose Society Limited and her distancing from its financial dealings.

Edo Government Demolishes Building Allegedly Linked to Suspected Kidnap Kingpin


The Edo State Government has demolished a building allegedly connected to a suspected kidnapping kingpin in Obagie-N’Evbuosa Community, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, as part of its intensified campaign against kidnapping and violent crime across the state.

The demolition was carried out by the Principal Security Officer to Governor Monday Okpebholo, in collaboration with security agencies and the Edo State Security Squad, codenamed Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultists.

Speaking during the operation, the spokesperson for the security squad, Noah Idemudia, said intelligence reports identified the property as a hideout where kidnapped victims were allegedly held before being moved to other locations.

According to him, the building belongs to Solomon Johnson, a suspected leader of a kidnapping syndicate currently in police custody.

Idemudia alleged that Johnson and members of his gang had terrorised residents of Obagie-N’Evbuosa Community through a series of kidnapping operations. He disclosed that the syndicate recently demanded an ₦11 million ransom for the release of a victim and had allegedly planned to abduct the victim’s wife before security operatives foiled the plot and arrested the suspect.

He said the demolition was intended to send a strong warning to individuals involved in kidnapping and other criminal activities, stressing that the Edo State Government would not tolerate criminal hideouts within its communities.

The security spokesman further alleged that although many suspected kidnappers operating in Edo State are non-indigenes, they often receive support from local collaborators who provide shelter and logistical assistance.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting residents, warning that Edo State would no longer serve as a safe haven for criminal elements.

As part of broader efforts to strengthen security, Idemudia disclosed that the state government would soon hold a strategic meeting with Okaigheles (community heads) across Edo State to enhance community policing and improve intelligence gathering.

He explained that community leaders would be required to identify and profile new residents within their communities while working closely with security agencies to detect and prevent criminal activities. He added that traditional community heads would also be held accountable for security lapses within their domains.

Meanwhile, the suspect, 28-year-old Solomon Johnson, who identified himself as a bricklayer from Delta State, allegedly confessed during interrogation that he worked for a man identified simply as Efe, whom he accused of being involved in robbery and kidnapping operations.

Johnson claimed his role was to sell mobile phones, laptops and other valuables allegedly stolen from kidnapping victims around the Ring Road area, adding that he earned commissions from the sales, sometimes receiving as much as ₦50,000 from a single transaction.

Police authorities said investigations into the case are ongoing, while the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo has reiterated its resolve to sustain operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and restoring public safety across Edo State.
