The move the government say would help the country prioritise global and national health security. Joint External Evaluations (JEE) assesses country-specific status and progress in developing the required capacity to prevent, detect and rapidly respond to public health threats. Announcing Nigeria’s decision in a statement released on Thursday, Dr Ifedayo Adetifa, the Director General Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention says the adoption of IHR and previous investment in JEE accounted for the successes recorded in national responses to diseases of pandemic significance like Ebola in 2014, Mpox in 2017, and the novel SARS-COV2 (COVID-19) in 2019. According to the statement, COVID-19 pandemic exposed gaps in health equity globally and the JEE 3.0 would incorporates lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic. Adding that the evaluation will help measure Nigeria’s progress in addressing previous recommendations and identify new areas for improvement considering evolving national and global health threats. The statement listed High-level advocacy briefing on JEE, Training of IHR focal leads on the self-assessment process/tools, 5-day Self-assessment Workshop, Self-assessment validation workshop and 5-day JEE Workshop as some of the activities lined up in preparation for the National JEE by external evaluators. The JEE 2.0 conducted in 2017 recommended development of the National Action Plan for Health Security (NAPHS) 2018-2022 to address identified gaps. The NAPHS plan was a multi-sectoral plan that involved over fifteen Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). Since implementing NAPHS, Nigerian has achieved; the Passage of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) Bill, Digitisation of the national disease surveillance network, Development of a risk communication and community engagement framework across all levels among other successes. https://developmentnetworktv.com/2023/06/22/nigeria-strengthens-health-security-through-participation-in-jee-3-0/

The country’s National Primary Health Care Development Agency’s chief executive, Dr. Faisal Shuaib, made the announcement on Wednesday during a quarterly review meeting with the South-East Traditional Rulers Committee on primary healthcare delivery in Awka, the capital of Anambra State. Represented by Dr Bassey Okposen Bassey, the agency’s Director of Disease Control and Immunisation, Dr Shuaib said, “HPV is a commonly transmitted infection that can lead to various health issues, including cervical, anal, and oropharyngeal cancers. He observed that the impact of HPV-related diseases is not only physical but also emotional, affecting individuals and families across our society. Dr. Shuaib solicited for support from the traditional rulers in inspiring positive health seeking behaviour and combating misinformation among their subjects. “We encourage our majesties to support and actively participate in immunisation activities, awareness creation, and community mobilisation efforts. Your influence and credibility can inspire positive health-seeking behaviour and promote preventive measures within your communities. “Let us work together to combat misinformation, address vaccine hesitancy, and encourage the adoption of healthy lifestyles.” Declaring the event open, Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, represented by the deputy governor, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, said his government prioritises healthcare delivery and has adopted a bottom-up approach to guaranteeing a functional system. The Country Representative of the World Health Organisation, Dr Walter Mulambo, on his part said data from the NPHCDA indicated that despite the improvement in immunisation coverage, children who missed vaccinations and have never received doses of routine immunisation, or “zero dose children,” still exist across the length and breadth of the country. Also Speaking, the Chairman of the South-East Council of Traditional Rulers and the Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, Igwe Lawrence Agubuzu, lauded the initiative and promised to play their role as critical stakeholders in driving primary healthcare in the various communities. https://developmentnetworktv.com/2023/06/21/nigeria-introduces-anti-cancer-vaccine/ #DevelopmentNetworkTelevision #DNNews |
