FLOOD ALERT: Kano, Delta, 12 Other Nigerian States Risk Flooding by vsamter(m): 3:59pm On Jul 05, 2023
Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says 31 communities in 14 states are at risk of experiencing flooding.

According to NEMA, the 31 communities in the fourteen states would witness heavy rainfall that may result in flooding. Affected states are to be on alert as the rains are expected from 4th to 8th of July. The alert, NEMA says is from a shared update of the Federal Ministry of Environment’s Flood Early Warning System (FEWS) Central Hub.

A statement by the agency’s Territorial Coordinator for Lagos State, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, urged relevant stakeholders within the states concerned to take precautionary measures to forestall the loss of lives and property.

Nigeria’s experienced a devastating flood in 2022 that resulted in lost of over 600 lives and displacing 1.4 million persons

The listed affected states and communities to are:
Plateau – Langtang, Shendam
Kano – Sumaila, Tudun wada
Sokoto – Shagari, Goronyo, Silame
Delta – Okwe
Kaduna – Kachia
Akwa Ibom – Upenekang
Adamawa – Mubi, Demsa, Song, Mayo-belwa, Jimeta, Yola
Katsina – Katsina, Jibia, Kaita, Bindawa
Kebbi – Wara, Yelwa, Gwandu
Zamfara – Shinkafi, Gummi
Borno State – Briyel
Jigawa – Gwaram
Kwara – Jebba
Niger – Mashegu, Kontagora

Government Earlier Response
In June, the Nigeria government had announced the deployment of experts to all 36 states of the federation, and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The experts were drowned from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), and the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) to warn citizens of possible flooding and flood devastation in the months ahead.

The move, government says was enable those concerned to make plans that can save lives, property and the ecosystem.
