PoliticsGhana Discovers Large Quantity Of Oil And Gas by Wale112(op): 11:54pm On Jan 23, 2015
Ghana has discovered large quantities of gas deposits that will help solve the irregular supply of power, Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur has revealed.

According to him, a formal announcement will be made in the coming days. The vice president made the disclosure in a discussion with executives of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The delegation was led by its President and CEO, Hamad Buamim.

Speaking with the delegation at the Flagstaff House, Thursday, Amissah-Arthur assured the investor community of high returns in Ghana, despite the economic challenges the country is facing.

Ghana has been unable to meet its current energy needs due to a shortfall in gas supply from the West African Gas Pipeline in Nigeria to power thermal plants across the country.

State power producer Volta River Authority (VRA) is therefore unable to produce enough energy for domestic and industrial consumption, a situation which has led to a protracted load management programme.

About 540 Megawatts of power is being shed. It has plunged Industry into incurring additional cost of production while domestic consumers are also being inconvenienced.

PoliticsNigeria Would Annex Ghana Soon by Wale112(op): 9:39am On Jan 23, 2015
New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central in the Central Region, Kennedy Agyepong fears Ghana would soon be annexed by Nigeria if the country does not take steps to safeguard her sovereignty.

The NPP Legislator said on Oman FM Thursday that his fear stems from the rampant mounting of billboards of Nigerian political contenders in the country.

This practice, he said is totally outrageous and urged the security agencies in the country to be up and doing by tearing down the advertisements as that is improper and inconsistent with international conventions.

Several billboards of Nigerian political contenders including President Goodluck Jonathan and his presidential contender, Buhari have sprang up in the capital with the excuse that it is a means of campaigning to reach Nigeria’s growing community in Ghana.

A senior Research Fellow at the Legon Centre for International Affairs and Diplomacy (LECIAD), Vladimir Antwi-Danso condemned this practice calling it a security threat.

The international relations expert told Adom News in an interview that since the relationship between some former leaders in Ghana and Nigeria are not too warm, allowing the mounting of the billboards could have dire consequences, not just on the international scene but in local politics.

But the Executive Secretary of the Advertising Association of Ghana, Francis Dadzie insisted mounting the billboards does not flout any law.

He also said they do not pose any security threat as intimated by Dr. Antwi Danso.

The NPP Legislator commenting on this termed it as inappropriate and cited practices in various Western countries to buttress his point.

“Do you know how many Canadians live in the USA and vice versa, but no one goes to mount billboards in each of the countries during their internal political contests…what of Belgium and France, yet it is never done…,” he said.

Thus to him, the National Security of Ghana must be up and doing about this high level of ‘impunity.’

The Billboards advertising the political messages of Nigerian political opponents are on the N1 highway and at the Silver Star Junction on the Airport road.

PoliticsBillboards Of Nigerian President In Ghana A Security Threat by Wale112(op): 7:49pm On Jan 21, 2015
The appearance of giant billboards sporting Nigerian political parties and their candidates in Ghana has sparked concern from political scholars.

A Senior Research Fellow at the Legon Centre for International Affairs and Diplomacy, Dr. Vladimir Antwi Danso says the billboards of Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan and his opponents are a threat to Ghana’s National Security and should be removed immediately.

Though Dr. Antwi Danso says he is unsure of the motive behind the introduction of Nigerian politics in Ghana, it would be prudent if government investigates the issue and deals with it as a matter of urgency.

Adom News has already spotted two giant billboards of Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan at Dankwa Circle in Accra and the toll booths on the Accra-Tema Motorway.

The international relations expert says, among others, the relationship between some former leaders in Ghana and Nigeria are not too warm, and allowing the mounting of billboards could have dire consequences, not just on the international scene, but in local politics.

However, the Executive Secretary of the Advertising Association of Ghana, Francis Dadzie insists mounting the billboards does not flout any law.

He also says they do not pose any security threat as intimated by Dr. Antwi Danso.

In Mr. Dadzie’s opinion, Ghanaians talk too much.

Also commenting a political science lecturer, Dr. Bossman Asare says Ghanaian politicians can take advantage of the lessons learned and advertise themselves in other countries.

He points out that there is a sizable population of Nigerians residing in Ghana, and their parties are reaching out to them via the billboards.

PoliticsGhana Navy Arrest 8 Nigerian Pirates, Frees Seized Ship by Wale112(op): 9:01am On Jan 18, 2015
The Ghana Navy on Saturday foiled a pirate attack on a Nigerian cargo vessel, MT Mariam and captured all eight bandits.

The pirates were armed, but no one, including a nine-member crew aboard MT Mariam, was injured when the Ghana Navy crew aboard GNS BLIKA effected the arrest.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the 1 Garrison of the Ghana Armed Forces, Lt Maxwell Asola, all eight pirates are Nigerians.

Owners of the hijacked ship alerted the Ghana Navy about the incident and requested for assistance.

MV Mariam is scheduled to dock at the port on Sunday.

Lt. Maxwell Asola told the Daily Graphic that the arrest took place at about 10:30am and that the owner of the vessel in lodging the complaint, said the pirates told him via telephone that they wanted to use the vessel to carry out an attack and banged the phone.

This prompted the owner of MV Mariam to approach the Ghana Navy for assistance.

PoliticsNigerians Fleeing To Ghana Over Impending Elections and Boko Haram by Wale112(op): 9:50pm On Jan 08, 2015
The heated political atmosphere in Nigeria due to the country’s upcoming general elections in February has seen an influx of Nigerians into Ghana.
Confirming this to Citi News, the President of the All Nigerian Community in Ghana, Moses Owaru said the influx of Nigerians into Ghana over the past few weeks can also be attributed to the general security challenges facing the country.

“Nigerians are coming to Ghana; yes I agree that the rate has increased a little bit but the issue of security in Nigeria – the Boko Haram is also making people come to Ghana,” he explained.
According to him, many Nigerian students are also coming to Ghana to study at the various tertiary institutions.
“Some students are also coming to Ghana so I wouldn’t say that it’s just because of the election that is why they are coming to Ghana,” he remarked.
Nigeria will in February head to the polls to elect a new President and the country is also battling with the insurgence of Islamist Militant group, Boko Haram whose activities claimed over 2,000 lives in 2014.
These situation is believed to have contributed largely to the migration of some Nigerians into neighbouring countries in the West African sub-region including Ghana.

Mr. Owaru indicated that the security situation in Nigeria is likely to escalate during and after the elections which is why some Nigerians “wish to come to Ghana to stay till the election is over.”
“It is to help them know how to comport themselves. They must live by the law and make sure they understand the environment they are coming in,” he added.
Reacting to the influx of Nigerians into Ghana, the Director of Operations at the Ghana Police Service, COP John Kudalor told Citi News, the Police are adequately prepared to address any security challenge that may arise due to the impending Nigerian elections.
“We have put in place measures and patrolling. I am sure very soon, NADMO will get in touch with us. Meanwhile, we are making our security arrangements to make sure that if anything unforeseen happens, we will be able to contain it,” he assured.
According to him, the Ghana Police Service is on high alert due to the existing security situation in the sub-region.
“It’s not only in Nigeria, it’s a sub-regional issue with very important dimensions but we will make adequate preparations,” he said.
COP Kudalor further disclosed that from November 2014, his outfit began preparations “and during the Christmas operations, that was also in mind.”
