The Nigeria Police says the 164 people arrested during last month’s sectarian crisis in Jos, may be charged to court later this week. According to the police, 41 of the suspects will be charged with murder. Police spokesperson, Emmanuel Ojukwu, confirmed that all the 164 suspects arrested during the crisis are still in police custody. According to Mr. Ojukwu, “164 were arrested and interrogated, 41 will be charged for murder and terrorism.” He also said 151 suspects will be charged with multiple offences that include unlawful possession of firearms, arson, and rioting. According to him, in accordance with the law, the prosecution of the suspects will be handled expeditiously by the office of the Attorney General of the Federation. Last month’s killings occurred less than two months after hundreds of Muslims were killed in the village of Kuru Karama. The latest killings that occurred in Dogon Nahowa village, also leading to the death of hundreds of people, are believed to be reprisal attacks for the January killings. In the last ten years, sectarian killings have occurred with frightening regularity in Plateau State, leading to a vicious cycle of killings and counter killings. Many have blamed politicians for the violence that stalks a state that was once the epitome of peaceful inter-faith and inter-tribal living. Mr. Ojukwu said the Nigeria Police is doing everything to ensure that the violence does not reoccur. He further said: “The Police High Command has sent a Police Assistant Inspector General to Jos to maintain order, make sure that there are no recurrence of such, and take charge; and we are ready to mobilise in case there is any eventuality.” However, there is a lack of confidence in the ability of the police to provide a permanent solution to the problem. On March 17, ten days after the Dogon Nahowa killings, another 12 people were killed in Byei village in Riyom local government area of Plateau State. Fulani herdsmen are alleged to be responsible. Iyiola Omisore, a senator from Osun State, has dragged Punch Nigeria Limited and two others before a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja, for having purportedly published a ‘libellous article' and he is asking for the sum of N1 billion jointly and severally from the respondents. Mr. Omisore joined the Editor of Punch Nigeria Limited and a certain Kola Ibrahim, who allegedly wrote the article titled ‘Osun State Election Is A Farce', as co-defendants in the suit. While the article was said to have been published on 27 April 27, Mr. Omisore said the publication has brought hatred, doubt, shame and loss of good reputation as well as loss of self-esteem. ‘The Master Rigger' Accordingly, the senator is claiming that the article inferred that he is a master election rigger who won his senatorial seat by dubious means; also, that he is a notorious murderer and terrorist who could and indeed kill with impunity, as well as has no value for human lives among a host of other defaming inferences. Consequently the claimant asked for a court injunction restraining The Punch Newspapers from further "printing, writing or calculating or causing to be written, printed or calculated or otherwise publishing of the plaintiff the said or similar libel." In addition, he asked for a sum of N1,000,000,000.00 (one billion naira) severally and jointly as damages. While the matter came up before Olaide Olayinka on Thursday, the court could not proceed with the trial as was earlier scheduled because the lead counsel to The Punch Newspapers was absent, as he was said to be indisposed, according to the junior counsel, Saheed Sodiq. The matter was adjourned to 15 April, 2010 for mention by the presiding judge who noted that the redeployment in the Lagos judiciary was one of the reasons for the adjournment, since the matter will likely be reassigned to a new judge, who will be moving to the Ikorodu division. "This is a fresh matter where parties have agreed on today for definite trial," Mr. Olayinka said. "However in view of the deployment, the court will give a date for mention." Switzerland has halted special flights to deport asylum seekers after a Nigerian man on hunger strike died on the tarmac at Zurich airport. Swiss police say they had shackled the 29-year-old man, who was being forcibly deported along with 15 other Nigerians whose asylum bids had been rejected. When he fell ill on Wednesday the police took off his shackles and a doctor tried in vain to revive him. Swiss authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Police said they had shackled the man because he had resisted deportation. Two Nigerian witnesses quoted by the Swissinfo news website accused the police of inhumane treatment. "They treated us like animals," said one, called Emmanuel. "They shackled our feet, knees, hands, hips, arms and torso and made us wear a helmet like those worn by boxers. It was simply impossible to move," he said. The man who died was a drug-dealer who had been on hunger strike for several days. It is the third such death in Switzerland since 1999. Last year there were 43 special repatriation flights from Switzerland, deporting some 360 people, mostly to the Balkans or Africa, Swissinfo reports. The world’s shortest man, China’s He Pingping who was just over 74 cm tall (29 inches), has died at the age of 21 from apparent heart complications, the Guinness World Records book said. He, who suffered a form of primordial dwarfism and was recognised as a world-record holder in 2008, died on Saturday in Rome, where he was taking part in a TV show. “For such a small man, he made a huge impact around the world,” Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief of the London-based Guinness World Records, said in a statement. He was born in China’s northern region of Inner Mongolia in 1988. According to the BBC, he was admitted to hospital two weeks ago after suffering a chest complaint. Guinness announced his death late on Monday. He was a chain smoker and his family said he stopped growing after he turned 18.
