U missed out the point where I referred to his definition and explanation.

Ur last paragraph says it all so no point arguing any further.

The context is clear and referencing mathematicians who solve problems like Fermat's Last Theorem, and AntiWailer Algorithm will only complicate the discussion the more.

Maybe I missed your point referencing the guy's definition but it's irrelevant because I was only responding to your question about programming without understanding algorithms.

Engineers and computer scientists with a heavy math background develop algorithms. That's not necessarily true for being a programmer. It does not even have to be something complicated but it has to be efficient. Google search, in its simplest form, uses a simple ranking algorithm. Digital signal processing is another thing tha comes to mind.

I cannot program a simple html website because I have no interest in it but, in my past life, I wrote digital signal processing codes in Matlab and C to embed in VxWorks.

1. How do u program at all without understanding algorithm ?

The list is incomplete but you're not necessarily correct also. A lot of math majors are hired to implement and/or develop algorithms. For example, the gps in the phone you're using relies on a lot of math to get you from point A to point B. Algorithm developers will typically develop an algorithm in a simple language like Matlab before someone else translates it into a compiled code (firmware).

Think of all the myriad of technologies involved in 3G/4G cell towers. How does the cell tower know when and how to hand off your phone call to the next closest cell tower as you drive around the city? Heavy math is involved (multidimensional matrices). That's all algorithms.

The article appears to be directed to web technologies and not other types of programming. Even then, I would have probably categorized programmers as falling into a frontend and/or backend developer.

Masters in what? This is the million dollar question!

If it is STEM related, I'll say you should give it a try. It is always best to get your studies out of the way after several years of experience.

Generally, Canada is a good country and somewhat educated immigrant friendly. Plus, you have the option of crossing over into the US if you desire more income but faster paced environment.

They would rather have us devalue the Naira so that people can suffer instead of stopping some foreign imports that will affect their darling countries. NO.

Even if we end up devaluing the Naira we still need to proceed with stopping some imports!

Career 1: Electrical engineering - my first love! Started out as an electrical engineer and rose through the ranks but I got bored when technical solutions became somewhat repetitive.

Career 2: Law - I enrolled in law school and graduated to practice the type of law that allowed me to use my technical knowledge. I practice law in a firm but I'm getting bored again.

Next career: Entrepreneurship. Still working on it while I practice. Everything I do will rely on knowledge from my past careers, especially, electrical engineering.

I've been lucky enough to have two very successful careers by any measure. Carreers that people will die for. Unfortunately, I have this insatiable drive that keeps a fire burning inside me to play my hand to the fullest. I pray and hope that if and when I fully cross over into my 3rd career, I become more successful than both past careers combined!

So I not only have childhood dreams, I still have dreams as an adult.

1. A turbo starts at $160k and you'll need about $20-$50k in options. At $160k, you'll probably find a 5 year old Hyundai with more options.

2. If the watch is truly that expensive, why buy a watch that you'll have a difficult time selling at a 50% loss due to lack of demand? Buy something that's worth collecting if you're into expensive watches.

On the other hand, maybe watches is her thing! Who's to say $160k VW beetle (911 turbo) with no options is not overpriced? Na her money. If she likes, she can go buy land for moon. That's her prerogative.

The truth is, most wealthy people accumulate or spend on frivolous things!

I think your situation will determine if it is a good move!

1. Are you married? It will be very difficult finding a partner in the middle of nowhere.
2. Lifestyle - outdoors vs city life.
3. How stable is the job? If you lose that job, forget getting another remotely similar one in that area. You will probably have to move.
4. Rental market - how strong is the rental market? If strong, you can always turn it into a rental property. On the other hand, $100k is not a lot of money if you’re already making that much in income.
5. Kids - pros and cons of growing up in the middle of nowhere.
6. Tolerance – people far away from metropolitan areas tend to be less tolerant of anything that’s different from what they know.

Bottom line - there's a reason why houses cost so little over there and it revolves around jobs! If I were in your shoes and want to move, I'll be buying a property no less than 10 acres and also explore building from scratch. With that amount of land, you could get lucky if and when society encroaches on that area. :-) But 2 hours to get to a major city? Damn! What if some type of natural disaster occurs?

Where are those that claim HIV is no longer a bad thing? The best situation you can be in is to protect yourself from catching it in the first place! Use protection!

Anyway, I think this may be the impetus needed for a Nigerian pharmaceutical company to make a generic version of the drugs HIV patients need. I believe South Africa did the same thing a while ago. Look on the bright side, if we are able to manufacture the generic drugs, we may be able to export it to other African countries! Win-win!

The poster child of why weakening currencies do not imply slow growth is South Korea. South Korea grew its GDP per capita from about 1100 US dollars in 1960 to about 24,500 in 2014. What happened to its currency over the period? In 1960 one US dollar exchanged for about 63 won. Today one US dollar exchanges for almost 1200 won. In short, over the period where South Korea has “developed”, its currency has also weakened consistently....

This is just half the story! South Korea weakened their currency to make their goods cheaper abroad. Same with other East Asian countries! Can you imagine if South Korea has a really strong currency? That may mean that Samsung Galaxy will be more expensive than an iPhone and Kia will be more expensive than a Mercedes Benz. When you don’t make anything, you want a stronger currency as evidenced by Kuwait, Bahrain, Pounds, etc. A stronger currency means cheaper imports.

seunmsg:
...
The third myth is the idea that devaluations lead to runaway inflation, an idea that is not technically true. To be clear, devaluations do lead to inflation but not nearly as much as people think.

For example, the South African rand has devalued by about 40% in the last year yet inflation has ticked up by less than one percentage point to 5.2% from 4.4% a year ago. The Russian rubble has devalued by 126% since the middle of 2014 yet inflation has gone from 8% in mid-July of 2014 to about 13% today, although it peaked at around 16%. A significant increase, but nowhere near catastrophic.
....

Maybe not in those countries but it will in Nigeria because we import everything.

seunmsg:
...
The final myth to bust is the idea that Nigeria has an import problem. You typically hear statements like “How can we be importing everything from toothpicks to fish. It is unsustainable.” Often left out of such statements is the fact that we have a N90tn economy. And you cannot have a N90tn economy that does not import. Is it odd that a N90tn economy would import N100bn worth of building materials or N26bn worth of shoes? No it’s not.

According to comparable data compiled by the World Bank, Nigeria imported only about 12.5% of GDP in 2014. Of the 160 countries for which the World Bank has data available, Nigeria had the lowest imports to GDP ratio. Côte d’Ivoire imported about 38.9% of GDP in 2014, Ghana imported about 48.9%, Mauritius imported about 63%, Belgium about 83.1% and Ireland about 95.4% of GDP.
....

You know what they say about statistics.... To get a meaningful comparison with Nigeria, I would think you'd want to look at countries with similar trade deficits and not import to GDP ratio.

Family / Re: Dear Mothers, Stop Bleaching Your Baby's Skin. by Wallie(m): 4:54pm On Feb 16, 2016
Sooner or later when health challenges come knocking they will start blaming some unseen forces! Here's a link to a paper that analyzed the following skin whitening (bleaching) creams:

Body white
Tura
Maxitone
Movate
Amos white
Top gel
Ultra clair
Fair and white
Ethidium bromide

ABSTRACT
Skin whitening (bleaching) creams are often used to deliberately lighten the skin in response to social pressures or for the treatment of skin pigmentation. Bleaching creams contain varied concentrations of hydroquinone, corticosteroids, ammoniated mercury and kojic acid. Prolonged use of these creams may have deleterious (mutagenic) effect on the genetic material (DNA) of body cells. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mutagenicity potentials of eight commonly used bleaching creams (Body white, Tura, Maxitone, Movate, Amos white, Top gel, Ultra clair, Fair and white), using the modified Ames test (with and without metabolic activation) that uses the wild type Escherichia coli (0157:H7) as tester strain. The assay was examined for revertant strains of the organism with at least three alterations in the phenotypic characteristics of the wild type organism. Results obtained showed that the eight bleaching creams produced revertant strains of the organism with alteration in more than three of its phenotypic characteristics and compared favourably with the standard mutagen (ethidium bromide), which produced the same effect. Three mutation mechanisms (forward, backward and silent mutations) were identified. The introduction of liver enzymes (S9 mix) made no significant difference in the number of characteristics altered (p>0.05). The results of this study revealed that the eight bleaching creams were mutagenic in bacteria and could be said to possess carcinogenic potentials. Their mechanism of mutagenesis could also be by intercalation just as ethidium bromide.

I actually believe the story. An agreement was probably reached but the nanny was definitely cheated because the employers were probably looking for awoof! The employers didn't want to pay the going rate for a nanny and figured they could get a Nigerian in Nigeria cheaply. That in itself is not a bad idea but when you start mistreating her and not even paying her a fraction of the ongoing rate, they deserve the football numbers coming their way! They are going to jail for a very long time! I only pity the innocent kids now left without a mother and father.

A licensed daycare for ONE child under two is about $250- $475 per WEEK! A live-in nanny charges about $15-$18 per hour. I can't even begin to think the cost of watching over five kids. The very least they could do is give her about $1000 a month for working 8 hours per day.

I interviewed a nanny and her mother once. The girl was about 26 and in school, and the mother, a 76 year old, recently lost her husband and stated working as a nanny to keep busy. The stories they told me about how a Nigerian couple treated the mother when she worked as a live-in nanny was crazy! I didn't hire them because it was cheaper for me to use a licensed daycare plus I don't have to worry about a stranger living in my house.

By the way, the employers probably didn't want her to use the hot water because she takes too long in the shower and/or the hot water is done by the time they want to take a shower. When you have 8 people in a house, it is not too difficult to imagine that hot water and food will run out very quickly.

By the way, why are Nigerians not becoming au pairs? http://www.aupairinamerica.com/fees/ You can make easy money for 1 year watching kids.

I hope you do see this before it gets deleted, the forum kinda frowns on stuffs like this.

Thanks for the info! By the way, I wasn't trying to do anything illegal nor do I have a reason for doing so. I'm not even based in Nigeria. I can now understand why people are hesitant.

My intention is honest and it stems from the fact that Netflix is opening up shop in a country where most people use mobile phones and data cost a fortune. Personally, I do stream Netflix to my cellphone daily on my commute home from work but that's because I have unlimited data with my carrier. As of today, I've used 11,931.53 MB (12GB) of data on my cellphone and my billing cycle ends tomorrow. And even at home, our broadband internet access is unlimited, and Netflix and YouTube are constantly being streamed.

As I alluded to, I'm trying to develop a solution to the problem but I want to better understand the pain-points before wasting my time and resources.

1. Surf the web for your favorite websites?
2. Watch videos on YouTube?
3. Watch Netflix?

If you use Wi-Fi, where do you get your Wi-Fi from and how do you use it on-the-go? Or are people just stuck at internet cafes all day?

My cellphone actually has more readily available info on it than my desktops, laptop, and iPad combined!

All my financial info (credit cards, personal bank accounts, business bank account, brokerage account, retirement account) are all accessible through different apps on my phone.

My personal and business email accounts are readily accessible.

My Dropbox and Google Drive are readily accessible.

Once you have access to my cellphone, you basically have access to everything about me.

I would be a fool not to protect the info with alphanumeric password and fingerprint detection.

Sometimes I just hate being smart. Being smart, getting A's in school will make you top your class and later provide you with a decent to very lucrative job that's just going to assure your future. You won't be poor and you'll live a comfortable life. But sometimes, I just can't help but wonder at how boring and mundane everything eventually becomes. sad sad angry

On the other hand, not getting all the A's and not topping your class will throw you out there, challenge you to dream big and force you to come up with a living that could probably break bounds, making you into a household name. Linda Ikeji, Toke Makinwa, Folorunsho Alakija, Oprah, these are people who certainly didn't get the best grades in school or studied the best courses at university, yet they shape and influence the polity more than the best graduating student in Electrical Engineering from the set 1985 in Unilag would ever do. And who's that best graduating student anways? I bet no one knows today! sad sad

I so hate being smart! I wish I was a regular one that would have had to create something for herself. sad angry

Your conclusions are wrong.
1. How many people “not getting all the A's and not topping your class” are turning into household names?
2. You are basing smartness solely on acing exams and topping classes. Some people are smart but simple unmotivated or read just enough to pass exams with A-B grades.
3. Being able to ace exams does not necessarily mean that the person understands the applications of what was learnt. The person might just have a photographic memory or spent a lot of time cramming the subject.
4. There are a lot of people with only secondary school education but are indeed geniuses and very successful. http://elitedaily.com/news/business/100-top-entrepreneurs-succeeded-college-degree/

Being successful is usually attributable to a confluence of things. Here are some of the true reasons why the smartest people are not the most successful.
1. They send too much time thinking and too little time doing.
2. They overvalue things like credentials and college degrees.
3. They run away from risk instead of sprinting toward it.
4. They lose sight of the inches.
5. They look for “proof” and “evidence” and “data points” before moving forward when no such thing actually exists.
6. They value complexity over simplicity when simplicity trumps complexity every time.

Business / Re: CBN Stops Sales Of Forex To Bureax-De-Change by Wallie(m): 2:12am On Jan 12, 2016
Too many people are over analyzing the situation.
Here's a simple explanation:

1. Nigerians need dollars to buy stuff abroad.
2. Nigeria only prints Naira.
3. Nigeria has to sell something that pays in dollars so that they earn dollars.
4. Oil pays in dollars but we don't make as much money anymore.
5. Regardless of the price of oil, people still need to buy stuff abroad and pay in dollars.

6. You now go to DBCs and banks to buy dollars with your Naira that wouldn't be accepted abroad.
7. BDCs and banks tell you that they don't have dollars to sell for whatever reason.
8. You go to the black market to buy dollars but law of supply vs demand takes over, and you end up paying a crazy exchange rate.

All cbn is trying to do now is to get the dollars closer to consumers instead of DBCs with the hope that it will alleviate some of the noise.

Here's my take: it won't work unless the CBN (1) reduces demand, and/or (2) earns more dollars by selling more stuff abroad. The cbn governor tried to reduce demand buy stopping people for using debit cards for legitimate reasons and that's a mistake. With this new policy, the Cbn probably hopes that selling dollars directly to customers through banks will curb large scale hoarding by rich people wanting to hold their nairas in dollars but the solution will only work temporarily.

The simple non-punitive solution is to earn more dollars by exporting more. The fast punitive solution is to devalue Naira so that people will become poorer and would in turn buy less dollars.
