- Foremost northern leader and ex-Nigerian minister, Alhaji Maitama Sule, died on Monday, July 3 - Alhaji Sule died in a Cairo Hospital in Egypt - As expected, his death has been drawing reactions from prominent Nigerians given his popularity in Nigeria Former Head of State General Abdulsalam Abubakar on Sunday, July 9, described the death of late Maitama Sule as touching. Abubakar, who said this in Kano when he paid a condolence visit to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, stressed that the elder statesman’s death was a great loss to Kano and Nigeria as a whole. He said that the former diplomat was a complete gentleman and good citizen who dedicated his life to the unity, progress and development of Nigeria. He also revealed that the late politician submitted himself for arrest immediately after the 1983 coup in which many politicians in the country were arrested. He recalled that after the 1983 coup as the Brigade Commander, many politicians in the state were arrested except the late Danmasanin Kano (Late Maitama Sule). “I was at my office and Danmasani came with his luggage. He looked at me and said ‘why should you leave me alone while you have arrested all my associates. I want you to arrest me too and unite me with my fellow politicians in Lagos’. So you see the kind of struggle by people like the late Danmasani in order to unite Nigeria. “We have indeed lost an irreplaceable lacuna. We call on Nigerians to pray hard for the repose of his soul,” Abdulsalami. The former head of state said that death had left a big vacuum that would be hard to fill, considering the sincerity of the deceased who he noted served humanity well. Abubakar, also who condoled with members of the bereaved family and the state government, prayed God to grant the deceased eternal rest. He stated that he was in Kano on behalf of himself and Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida who could not make it due to his health challenges. Meanwhile, the national chairman of the New Generation Party (NGP), Dr Yakubu Shendam has described late Alhaji Maitama Sule as an icon and a role model to the new generation. Speaking to journalist in Abuja on Sunday, July 9, Dr Shendam commiserated with the family of Alhaji Maitama Sule, stressing that he was a father and role model to the new generation. His words: “Maitama Sule lived a life worthy of emulation, this is a man who never gets tired of advising us (youths) from time to time on the importance of unity, peace and love among ourselves. “As a minister in the First Republic, he was among the those who fashioned Nigeria politically and laid the grounds of national co-existence. I believe his demise should further strengthen us, to emulate is honesty and his kind of life.” |
The Borno Police Command on Sunday said it had deployed 3, 000 policemen to Maiduguri and other areas liberated from the Boko Haram insurgents. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the State, ASP Victor Isuzu, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri. Isuzu said that the measure became imperative to enhance security network in Maiduguri and other communities liberated from the insurgents. He explained that the command had taken proactive steps to deal with security threats, protect lives and property in the state. He said that the personnel had already resumed duty in their various posts. Commenting on the foiled suicide bomb attack by the insurgents at the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), the PPRO said the command had deployed additional personnel to strengthen security at the institution. “The command had recently deployed a full unit of mobile police personnel, guards and sniffer dogs to the university, to complement the presence of security personnel there. “These deployments have started yielding results toward preventing attempts by these enemies of peace to threaten the lives and safety of the university community and its environs.” Isuzu reiterated the commitment of the command to the protection of lives and property in the state. He called on the people to be vigilant and cooperate with the law enforcement agents to enable them to discharge their duties effectively. |

- Chief Olusegun Obasanjo claimed Abacha plotted to kill him - The former president said God intervened and he survived the attempt - He narrated how Yar'Adua was killed by Abacha's men Former president, Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed how Shehu Musa Yar’Adua and Chief MKO Abiola were killed by General Sani Abacha killer squad. The Punch reports that the former president gave this revelation at a dinner programme organised by an inter-denominational Christian organisation, Christ The Redeemer’s Friends International of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Lagos Province 39 Chapter. Obasanjo said that the late Yar’Adua was injected with a deadly virus and that he was next in line to be killed in detention but God intervened in saved his life. He said: “Two people had earlier told me Abacha promised that three of us would not come out of prison or detention alive; myself. Shehu Yar Adua and MKO Abiola. And two of them did not come out alive. So, that I came out alive, maybe God has a purpose. And therefore if the purpose is for me to serve the people and by so doing, serve God, then so be it. “Abacha claimed that I was plotting a coup. I wasn’t the first to be arrested. When Shehu (Yar’Adua) was arrested, I tried to plead for his release. When Abacha said he didn’t know about Shehu’s arrest, I said to him, ‘the number two man in this country cannot be arrested without you knowing.’ “In Abacha’s plan, he left God out of it and because he left God out of his plan, it (his government) eventually failed. There is God’s hand in the life of each and every one of us and every institution. I believe that very well. “When I was arrested, they took me to a house in Ikoyi (Lagos) and that became my abode (I was) in isolation, for three months. “In the meantime, there were national and international pressures for my release, (former US) President Jimmy Carter was one of the world leaders that came to ask for my release. Some African leaders like Yoweri Museveni and Robert Mugabe came. I believe it was because of those pressures that I was released from isolation in Ikoyi where I was under house arrest.” Obasanjo described the day he was court-martialled as the worst in his life. He said: “I must say that, that day, in a split second, it felt like the worst day in my life. What flashed through my mind was that I was forever ruined. I asked myself, ‘What did I do to deserve this? Is this what I get for serving Nigeria?’ But then, I told myself again that this was not done to me by Nigeria, but that one man did it for me.” “I was to go to Jos (prison) and Yar’Adua was to go to Port Harcourt (prison). In Jos, I was visited by my colleagues, including Yakubu Danjuma, Joe Garba, Domkat Bali, many of our colleagues, and then family members and friends. “Then a decision was made that I was becoming too popular in Jos prison and I had to be transferred to. Yola prison which is a native authority prison and I don’t need to tell you what life was there. “In Jos prison, before I was transferred to Yola prison, they had decided that Shehu Yar’Adua and myself should be poisoned. So, they took him from Port Harcourt prison to Abakaliki. In the process, he was injected with the virus that killed him. The same was supposed to be done to me. The man who came took me from the prison to a guest house in the GRA in Jos, said, ‘We know you have problem with cholesterol so I have to take your blood for a test.’ Then I said, ‘Not on your life, I don’t have any problem of cholesterol.’ “I was slightly diabetic. But God had taken care of it because I was checking my blood sugar almost on a daily basis and it had become better than normal. So, I refused him (the man) touching me with anything. So, they took me to Yola and he said, ‘when you get to where you are going, we will come again.’” Obasanjo revealed that the attempt to kill him was thwarted by a prison doctor. “The doctor was a professional man in charge of the General Hospital in Yola. He listened to my case that I needed special food because I was diabetic. He said the specialist would come to see me. The specialist turned out to be somebody from Okeogun in Oyo State. Two, he was a Baptist, and three, he had heard about me and knew me. So, he looked at me and said, ‘Don’t let anybody touch you with anything.’ “Within three weeks the man that came to me earlier returned again and said he wanted to take my blood. I said, ‘No, you have to get my doctor to come and take my blood for you.’ That was the arrangement between me and the doctor. And my doctor came and he brought a syringe and he took my blood and gave it to him. He now asked the man, ‘When would we have the result?’The man said, ‘Within 24 hours of my getting to Abuja.’I haven’t heard the result till today.” Obasanjo said after he was released from prison, he contested the presidential election following pressure from some well-meaning people. “Nigeria that was a pariah state became a darling (of the world). “What is the lesson for me? I developed in prison but unfortunately I was not able to sustain it. Maybe because there was nothing else to do in prison except to pray and fast. I used to fast a lot. On three occasions, I fasted for seven days, no water, no food… a unique power was given to me by God. “In all these, God did not leave me alone, and I know that. I say to people that God has never let me alone nor disappointed me in spite of all. I am a sinner. It is not because of my goodness, but because of the grace of God, and the grace of God continues to abound.” Sources: Now on fp http://www.dailyvibes.ml |
Skyevibes.com gathered that some students in a public school were humiliated by some of their teachers who stripped and flogged them for coming late to school. Teachers have been known to devise several means of punishing their students when they err, but this seems to be the most bizarre one. According to some pictures circulating online, some students of a public secondary school in Baham, Western region of Cameroon, were asked to strip down to their underwear (or none sef) while they flogged them for coming late to school. The story was shared by outraged Cameroonians who couldn't understand why the teachers would choose that form of punishment. The boys and the girls were made to lie on the ground in the same space. Sharing the post on Facebook, Song Mudoh wrote: "Only in Africa will you see this type of nonsense. Student stripped naked and flogged as part of school punishment. I really don't care what they did but this is totally unacceptable. And it's so funny why these grown students allowed themselves to be punished in this manner." - The United States is set to give Nigeria and 3 other countries $630 million in aid - Other countries to benefit from the aid include Yemen, Somalia and South Sudan - The announcement came as President Donald Trump attended the Group of 20 summit in Germany On Saturday, July 8, the United States announced more than $630 million in aid for Yemen, Somalia, South Sudan and Nigeria. The aid was to help such countries where conflict has led to the world's largest humanitarian crisis in more than 70 years according to the United Nations. The announcement was made as President Donald Trump attended the Group of 20 summit in Germany. David Beasley, the new American director of the UN World Food Program said: "This is truly a life-saving gift." Although, the US is the world's largest humanitarian donor, the Donald Trump administration recently proposed deep cuts to foreign aid up to 30% and this has led to a lot of concern. In a statement attributed to Rev. David Beckmann, president of the Washington-based Christian organization Bread for the World, he said: "We welcome President Trump's attention to the global humanitarian crisis, but he was announcing aid that Congress approved months ago and that his administration has delayed." Mllions of people in Yemen, Somalia, South Sudan and Nigeria face hunger amid conflict. Yemen has the world's largest cholera outbreak, while half of drought-hit Somalia's 12 million people need aid. South Sudan's civil war and Nigeria's Boko Haram insurgency have contributed to severe hunger. The girls, Joy Bishara and Lydi Pogu were one of the girls who escaped from the capture of Boko Haram and were offered scholarship to complete their education in the United States by a Christian non-governmental organisation. |
- The president of the Arewa Youth Coalition, Yarima Shettima, has said that IPOB leader of the Nnamdi Kanu, must not go unpunished - The Arewa youth president said the group is reviewing the quit notice issued to the Igbos - Shettima has revealed that the evacuation of the Igbo from the north was off the table Yarima Shettima, the president of the Arewa Youth Coalition (AYC), has said that the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, must be punished. NAIJ.com gathered that the Shettima also disclosed that the group was reviewing its stand on the quit notice issued to Igbos living in north. “The steps taken by the governors are commendable. One, we have since expected the governors to do what they are doing now. Nevertheless, it is better late than never for. “What the Ohanaeze and other organisations that came out to denounce the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) are doing is commendable. “We are also reviewing our own situation. We are going to have a meeting soon with other leaders of the coalition and come out with a clear position of things and what we intend to do in order to move forward,” he said. The AYC president speaking in an interview with Nigerian Tribune, noted that Kanu is someone “who has terrorised the country”. He said: “We will go as far to ensure that we take him to the international court of justice. We will internationalise his case and ensure that this young man is declared a terrorist. He can’t be allowed to go just like that. “To us, we are seeing what he is doing as a business venture. So, as far as we are concerned, a country should not be run as a banana republic where somebody can do anything and get away with it, without respect for the rule of law.” However Shettima stated that the call for the evacuation of the Igbo from the north was not totally off the table. “I am not saying we have completely removed the earlier condition that they should leave the north. However, the fact of the matter still remains that one, we are not violent. “Secondly, we intend also to explore all necessary avenues and ensure that, at the end of the day, things are being done in accordance with the law,” he said. You may have heard of hilarious Nigerian scams. A Nigerian astronaut has been trapped in space for the past 25 years and needs $3 million to get back to Earth, Can you help? Moreover, Nigerians are also good at promising true love and happiness. But You know, Love hurts. Those looking for true love and happiness lost tens of millions of dollars over the Nigerian dating and romance scams. These criminals spend their whole day trolling the online dating sites for contact emails and then send off hundreds of thousands of fraudulent emails awaiting the victim's response. A US federal district court in Mississippi has sentenced such three Nigerian scammers to a collective 235 years in prison for their roles in a large-scale international fraud network that duped people out of tens of millions of dollars. The three Nigerian nationals were part of a 21-member gang of cyber criminals, of which six, including Ayelotan, Raheem, and Mewase, were extradited from South Africa to the Southern District of Mississippi in July 2015 to face charges in the case. Oladimeji Seun Ayelotan, 30, faces up to 95 years in prison Rasaq Aderoju Raheem, 31, faces up to 115 years in prison Femi Alexander Mewase, 45, faces up to 25 years in prison A federal jury found all of them guilty of offenses involving mail fraud, wire fraud, credit card fraud, identity theft, and theft of government property, the US Department of Justice announced Thursday. Also, Ayelotan and Raheem were found guilty of conspiracies to commit bank fraud and money laundering, which is why they have been given longer prison sentences. Until now, the justice department has charged a total of 21 suspects in this case: 12 defendants have already pleaded guilty to charges related to the conspiracy while 11 have been sentenced to date. The gang has been operating since 2001 and ran a variety of online scams, including romance scams, where the criminals used the false identity of love-struck girlfriends on a dating site to establish a romantic relationship with unsuspecting victims. Once the gang members gained the victim's trust and affection, they would convince them to carry out their money laundering schemes and launder money from other rackets via MoneyGrams and Western Union, or resend electronics and other goods bought with stolen credit cards to countries where they could be sold for a profit. The gang members were arrested by South African police in a joint operation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service in December 2015. However, Nigerian scams will never die, and you could be their next victim.... Sources: http://www.skyevibes.com Cc; Lalasticlala |

A resident of Asaba in Delta state, Onwume Frank, has accused some officers of the Nigerian Army in the state, of assaulting him over an unpaid debt. According to Frank who shared his story to the Joint Legal Action Aids, an NGO, his aunt's son hired the soldiers to assault him for failing to pay up a N550, 000 debt his friend incurred after buying the aunt's faulty car. According to him, he was chained to an Iron Pole and a Cutlass and other dangerous weapons were used to beat him up. Below is his account as shared on JLAA's Facebook page "I introduced a friend based on trust to my aunt who is a car dealer ..he came to buy my aunt's faulty car for 550k without dropping any peny with the agreement that he would have to fix the car first before he starts paying..so due to the trust I have for him,the car was given to him by my aunt.. Then after a while he stopped picking his calls,my aunt now asked me to take her to my friend's family and which I did..when we got there,we met with the parents and they told my aunt to give them some time to pay her,but after a while she got angry cos she never heard from them. then she called me that she was going to the guy's family to tell them to get ready as she's going to come with a native doctor to do some native stuff since they don't want to pay. So after warning them, she went with the juju man and did what she did..then after my aunt noticed I was beginning to be successful, she turned to me that I should pay for the car.. But I told her to give me sometime to look for my friend as I was already making my own moves about getting him..but my aunt was just too obstinate that she started asking me to sell my only car so I can pay her if I don't have the money. Now,because I refused to sell my car or handed it over, the son came to my house with a Hilux that contained five army officers.. They took me to their base at ifunnaya street in Asaba ,handcuffed me on iron pole and started hitting my back brutally with cutlass and other harmful weapon" What concerns Nigeria Army and debt recovery? We are going into investigation to bring the perpetrators of this act to Justice" Sources: http://www.skyevibes.com/showthread.php?tid=131 More photos below -

A South African man has been left traumatized after he was drugged and raped ‘numerous’ times over three days by three female assailants. The 23-year-old man’s ordeal began when he hailed down a communal taxi in eastern Pretoria on Friday – which had three young women inside. According to TimesLive, the ride took a dramatic turn when the taxi began to change direction and the man was ordered to sit in the front. He was then injected within an unknown substance and passed out. South African Police Service Captain Colette Weilbach said: ‘He stated that he woke up in an unfamiliar room on a single bed ‘The female suspects then allegedly forced the man to drink an energy drink before taking turns raping him numerous times a day. ‘The South African Police Service take all sexual offences seriously regardless of gender. ‘[We assure] all victims of these types of crimes that we will carry out robust investigations to bring offenders to justice.’ The victim was later dumped semi-naked in a field, where he managed to flag down a passing car. Rape and sexual violence against both men and women are at epidemic levels in South Africa. It is estimated that more than half-a-million rapes are committed annually in the country. |
Despite winning the Europa League and the EFL Cup, Jose Mourinho is expected to spend huge money in the transfer market ahead of the start of the 2017-18 campaign in August. Manchester United’s performance in the Premier League has been a huge disappointment this season. The Red Devils were expected to challenge for the league title in Mourinho’s debut campaign at Old Trafford. Instead they finished sixth, 24 points behind the champions, Chelsea. However, United will still be competing in the Champions League next season after defeating Ajax in last week’s Europa League final. With that in mind, and the fact they will need to seriously challenge for the Premier League title next season, it’s imperative Mourinho recruits the right players over the coming weeks – and shifts the deadwood from his squad. How Man Utd’s XI might look in August But how might United’s XI look come the opening weekend of the season? Let’s take a closer look… Goalkeeper: Jan Oblak If David De Gea leaves Old Trafford for Real Madrid, United can’t settle for an inferior goalkeeper like Kasper Schmeichel or Joe Hart. FBL-EUR-C1-REALMADRID-ATLETICO Jan Oblak, Atletico Madrid’s No. 1, is one of the best in the business and would be worth every penny it’d take to bring him to Manchester. Left-back: Danny Rose Danny Rose, one of the Premier League’s standout full-backs over the past couple of years, is reportedly keen to move back up north. Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur – Premier League United are favourites to sign the Tottenham star, per the Mirror, and perhaps a deal involving Luke Shaw moving in the opposite direction would satisfy all parties. Shaw, remember, worked with Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton. FBL-ENG-PR-SUNDERLAND-SOUTHAMPTON Centre-back: Eric Bailly The Ivory Coast international has been outstanding in his debut season at Old Trafford and will retain his place in Mourinho’s starting line-up next season regardless of which other players arrive. Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United – Premier League Bailly has the potential to establish his status as one of the world’s best central defenders. Centre-back: Victor Lindelof Mourinho knows he can’t rely on Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo, so a new top centre-back needs to be signed this summer. FBL-POR-LIGA-SPORTING-BENFICA Benfica’s 22-year-old defender Victor Lindelof, capped 11 times by Sweden, has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks and would cost in the region of £30 million to sign. Right-back: Antonio Valencia Manchester United’s Players’ Player of the Year for the 2016-17 season, Antonio Valencia has surprised everyone by becoming arguably the Premier League’s best rightback. FBL-EUR-C3-MAN UTD-CELTA Mourinho would be mad to sign a replacement for the 31-year-old. Midfield: Fabinho United are understood to be close to sealing a deal for AS Monaco’s Brazilian midfielder Fabinho, who has enjoyed an excellent season. FBL-EUR-C1-MONACO-JUVENTUS An all-rounder, Fabinho can pass, tackle, cover ground and score goals. He netted nine goals for Monaco in Ligue 1 this season. Midfield: Ander Herrera Manchester United’s Player of the Year for the 2016-17 season, Ander Herrera has become one of the Red Devils’ key players since Jose Mourinho replaced Louis van Gaal last summer. Ajax v Manchester United – UEFA Europa League Final A central midfield comprised of Herrera, Fabinho and the next man on this list would be formidable. Midfield: Paul Pogba Now he’s had a season to settle back in, we should see the best of the world’s most expensive footballer next term. FBL-EUR-C3-AJAX-MAN UTD It wouldn’t come as a shock if the world-class French midfielder wins the PFA’s Player of the Year award at the end of next season. Left-wing: Ivan Perisic Mourinho doesn’t particularly trust Anthony Martial, who could be forced to make way for Inter Milan’s Croatian midfielder Ivan Perisic this summer. FC Internazionale v Udinese Calcio – Serie A United are currently negotiating with the Italian giants and a deal could be finalised over the coming weeks. Forward: Antoine Griezmann The player every United fans is hoping to see at Old Trafford next season, it now seems a question of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ Antoine Griezmann will sign for Mourinho’s side. The French forward has told Atletico Madrid that he wants to leave the club and United are now expected to trigger his £85 million release clause. Club Atletico de Madrid v Real Madrid CF – UEFA Champions League Semi Final: Second Leg He will take the No. 7 shirt vacated by Memphis Depay in January. Right-wing: Douglas Costa Jesse Lingard works hard but lacks the world-class quality that United require on the right-hand side of the pitch. Douglas Costa, however, is a class act with the ability to win matches. Arsenal FC v FC Bayern Muenchen – UEFA Champions League Round of 16: Second Leg The Brazilian hasn’t enjoyed a happy season at Bayern Munich and United, after qualifying for the Champions League, would stand an excellent chance of signing him. Uniteds potential 2016-17 XI |

The Kogi State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mrs Ngozi Nwatarali, on Thursday said that corps members in the state were expected to plant one million trees this year. She said this was part of an initiative by the Federal Government of planting one million trees in the state. Nwatarali made the disclosure at the flag-off ceremony and sensitization exercise of “Plant One Million Tree” by the 2017 Batch ‘A’ Stream 1 corps members and “would be” volunteers at the State Orientation Camp, Asaya, Kabba. According to her, the Federal Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the NYSC, is initiating and implementing the planting of “One Million Tree Concept”, expected to be effectively implemented by corps members in every state of the federation. She said that the sensitization exercise was imperative due to the high rate of deforestation in the country, adding that statistics has shown that Nigeria has lost about two million hectares of her forest between 2005 and 2010. “The programme is meant to engage and mobilize stakeholders in tree planting and maintenance culture, and the volunteer corps members are to be called ‘Tree Planting Ambassadors (TPA). “TPAs are expected to also mobilize other corps members and the public for voluntary tree planting and also create awareness in tree planting in schools, churches, mosques, villages and communities during their service year. “To achieve this, each corps member is expected to plant four trees in their respective places of primary assignment; then nurture these trees for the rest of their service year and give regular account. “This will help our nation to combat deforestation and achieve afforestation as well as meeting the UN Food and Agricultural Organizations (FAO) recommended 25 per cent national tree cover,” she said. The coordinator urged the corps members to volunteer and key into the concept that would in the final analysis make them tree planting ambassadors of their country. Earlier, Dr Solomon Hinmikaye, Head of Horticulture, Kabba College of Agriculture, stressed the need for the volunteers to have passion for tree planting, noting that problems of erosion, global warming and increased gas emissions were caused deforestation. “We have brought seedlings from Kabba college of agriculture to be planted by corps members to help promote afforestation and reduce the building of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere “To counter deforestation, we simply need to plant trees; massive replanting effort would help to alleviate the problems deforestation causes,” he said. The NYSC state coordinator with corps members jointly planted some trees to flag-off the programme. Sources: Latest Naija News
