EducationRe: The Types Of Exams We Need For Schools And Academic Institutions In Nigeria by weccoht1: 12:45pm On Nov 25, 2022
yinkbell:
Students can't apply knowledge they have not acquired since the curriculum is 90% theory and 10 % practical.
Believe me, the curriculum isn't designed that way. Curriculum interpretation by institutions/teachers/lecturers is where we are getting it wrong in my own opinion.

I write with reference to the colleges of health technology NBTE-assigned curriculum.
It is atypical to see Bloom's taxonomy - a framework used world wide as a hierarchy/progress /step in learning, outlined in lesson objectives at all levels. The six levels are remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating.
It suffice to say that the purpose of the taxonomy is to get theoretical and practical knowledge, skill and ability to solve problem and be productive.

Let's go to a classroom in Nigeria. The lesson topic, according to the curriculum, says - "Discuss the role of socio-economic factors in adolescent pregnancy".
A typical lecturer comes to lecture on the topic rather than allow a discussion to take place. I guess that is the best way he can interprete the lesson topic or curriculum.

.... But do you know that our inability to let students discuss as outlined in the curriculum, has an effect on their ability to look up facts and figures by themselves, put up an argument or counter argument to drive home their points or even hone their oral presentation skills among other things?

Know this - theoretical and practical knowledge, skill and/or ability to possess at the end of each topic is clearly stated as a learning outcome in all given curriculum by the government. No educator will deny that at all.
However, achieving the desired learning outcome is the onus of the institution/teachers.

We are closing the gaps for our own students through our performance-driven lesson plan.

I rest my case.

Thanks.
EducationRe: Is Doing A Course With A High Job Prospect On Your Mind? by weccoht1(op): 10:56am On Jul 16, 2021
Sorry for the break!

I 've heard people say they will rather study any course (due to low JAMB score) with low or no job prospect, as long as it's in a university - 'university at-all-cost mentality).

After graduation and the search for employment begins, then reality and perhaps frustration sets in.

A question we often ask degree holders in our college of health technology is why do they want a diploma in health despite their first degree?

Their answer: Health care is a promising and rewarding career and we want to flow with the tide.

The college of health technology would provide you such opportunity if JAMB does not provide it!

Before you close it!️

Health care courses are vocational in nature i.e you can start up something of your own after graduation.

Health workers enter on twice the salary of other graduates in the federal, state and local government services.

Opportunities for work here and abroad do exist compared to other non-health courses.

You can begin your journey to the top in the medical field through the College of health technology - could be longer, but slowly and steadily you will win the race.

Let's continue tomorrow.

Do you know that irrespective of your WAEC/NECO/GCE result, there is a course for you to study in a college of health technology!

See these examples:
With two(2) - three (3) credits you can to do a certificate course. These are often assistant courses
e.g. health assistant (with 2 - 3 yrs hospital work experience, you can study this at Wecare college of health technology), environmental health assistant, junior community health extension work, medical lab. assistant e.t.c.

With three(3) - four(4) credits, technician courses hold the sway e.g. environmental health technician, health information
management technician, pharmacy technician e.t.c

You need five credits (5) to study any technology course that will lead to a national or higher national diploma such
as environmental health technology, medical laboratory technology, health information & mgt. technology e.t.c.

Also, you require five (5) credits to study vocational courses such as senior community health extension work, dental surgery technician and some other courses. This is probably so because they are highly sought after courses in the college of health technology.

A College of Health Technology(CoHT) is a government-approved higher institution with a mandate to train students in health-related technical and vocational courses.

The good news is that colleges of health technology has been given the privilege to admit students with or without JAMB by the National Board of Technical Education - their regulatory body.

So, you do not need JAMB for admission.

So what is a college of health technology all about?

A CoHT is a monotechnic because it offers only health-related courses. Albeit, it has a polytechnic status, which means it is on the same level with any Nigeria polytechnic. In addition to the national diploma or higher national diploma awards given by a CoHT, a practice licence is given by the various regulatory bodies, of each course, to deserving students after writing the West African Health Examination Board Examination.

That said, it is important to know that CoHT were initially created to fill the dearth of health workers at the primary level health care, but due to lack of health workers, some graduates of CoHT are being found in secondary health facilities and tertiary health institutions assisting physicians, dental surgeons. medical scientists and nurses.

Let's continue tomorrow.

Meanwhile you can ask questions, if you have.
