The only non-starting captains we have had were old and about to leave/retire emeritus captains like Robbo, Dolly, Neville, Carrick who were also very senior members of the squad NOT a player meant to be at his peak in his 20s. If he is not good enough to start he should relinquish his place in the starting lineup and also give up the arm band.

Giving a newcomer with no winning or big team experience the arm band was a huge mistake. Persevering with it in the face of his obvious failings as a leader is another one.

I am not saying taking away the arm band from him would be a panacea to all our problems but you claiming you don’t understand why people want him demoted is disingenuous to say the least.

He has won nothing. He has proven nothing. He has been a poor leader so far and has also lost form. If he can’t play he should give up the arm band. It is not a hereditary title.
