This is not to discourage you but Master in Public health (MPH) will lead you nowhere here, consider job opportunities after graduation except you plan to upgrade to a PhD. Deeedeee: Thanks so much for your response. I m grateful. I am going for MPH. The first I had wasn’t an MPH rather MSPH. Although the school I chose doesn’t have a concentration more reason why I am drawn to it, but in the long I would love to practice more in global health/health administration. I have gone through the courses I will be taking and they are so different from what I have done in the past. |

Honestly you have done nothing wrong and your transcript looks good, may be try to finalize your accommodation with the school or get a temporary airbnb for a few days upon arrival, you could play that up during your next appointment, even though you are not married but if you have a relationship...play it too ....pray and believe!. Good luck YussufLaaro: No, I don't have a short-fall. The assistantship covers everything. The total is 66,471 with everything included. |

Reading your transcript, particularly this question. VO: Where will you be staying when you arrive in the US? Me: The university provided housing options and I will be finalising that on arrival. Do you have a short-fall on your I-20? how much was it. The question appears that you have a living expenses not covered by your assistanship. YussufLaaro: Hello Everyone, pls I really need your input as much as possible.
I got a fully funded master programme in Civil Engineering with the specialization in Water Resources Engineering. I went for my first attempt on 10th of November and below is my transcript; Embassy: Lagos Date: 10th November Window 3 (young white lady) 1st attempt MSc in Civil Engineering Fully funded Status: Denied
VO: Where are you going to?
Me: I'm going to Missouri University of Science and Technology for my master degree in civil engineering with specialization in Water Resources Engineering.
VO: How many Universities did you apply to?
Me: I applied to 2 universities - Purdue and Missouri University
VO: Why Missouri University?
Me: Because Missouri University will provide the opportunity to access advanced research facilities and also, I will get to work under my advisor who is experienced in Flood research and Precipitation Estimation using Radar and Satellite data. Having access to these resources will equip me with the technical skill, training, and research experience needed to contribute to mitigating flood risk challenges in Nigeria.
She off the mic and talk to a man (white also, I think the bald man). Talked for a while then she ON it again
VO: You are going for Civil Engineering, what did you study in undergraduate? Why the change in discipline?
Me: I'm not changing my field as I will specialized in Water Resources Engineering as a division in Civil Engineering. I studied Water Resources and Environmental Engineering and graduated top of my class with a CGPA of 4.81 out of 5.0.
VO: What programming skills do you know?
Me: I am proficient with Python and Java programming, and I'm good with building a Machine Learning model also. These skills are prerequisite in my research and in fact, during my interview with my advisor, he asked if I am good with Java as it is going to be used in the research.
She commended me of how prepared I was and then off the mic again and continues talking to the man. Then ON it again
VO: Are you married?
Me: No, I am not married.
VO: So, what's your plan after the degree?
Me: I will be returning back to my country to join the Nigeria Hydrological Service Agency as a researcher to contribute to solving the flood risk challenge in Nigeria.
VO: Where will you be staying when you arrive in the US?
Me: The university provided housing options and I will be finalising that on arrival.
She off the mic again, and talks to the man further, and finally, she ON it again
VO: Sorry, you do not qualify this time ....
For more context about me and what I think went wrong; I studied Water Resources Engineering and I'm going for a master degree in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Water Resources Engineering with full funding. I graduated last year, 2024 and I am currently interning at a tech company as a Machine Learning Engineer. I intended to tailor the current role as a way to improve my programming and machine learning skill which are required for my research area.
So, when I was going for the first attempt, I shared my DS-160 with a friend who has passed through the process and he said, it isn't an issue if I include what I currently do. During the interview, I was asked of what programming language do I know. I believed the question was raised due to the role.
I've scheduled my next interview (17th of December) and I'm really worried and felt like my profile is bleeped up. As part of my effort, I've been able to get a job offer from an consulting firm but I don't know how to go about this over again.
What can I do? pls help me out guys. |

Your spouse F1 VISA is a critical document required for F2 approval, you failed to provide it. Your F2 interview cannot proceed without it, proceeding to the interview window without it is straight refusal. Do the needful and reapply hallysonia: @Efetobore1980
An F-2 visa applicant (a mother with two children under 4) was refused following an interview at the U.S. Embassy in Lagos on October 15th.
=== Despite attempts, I could not secure the same interview date for my children through the AVITs portal. Relying on website information stating a single date could suffice for a family, I attended my scheduled interview alone, bringing my children with me to the embassy. During the checkup in the first building, the attendant tried to make an interview possible for the kids that same day, but it wasn't possible. Maybe I should make the kids stay with my mom, but I went with them to the main interview building.
== WHAT HAPPENED IN THE INTERVIEW BUILDING NOW === I met two Oyinbo asking me if we had ever traveled before, and immediately, I entered the building. I answered them, but I was shocked because it was unexpected. When I got to the first window, the woman there asked for my documents and for the kids. I told her I wasn't able to select the same date for the kids. She said Okay. She asked for my spouse's VISA page, which I don't have. She checked documents. She put a pink slip inside my passport to give it to her colleague. She said I shouldn't check what's inside.
Consular Officer Interview: The interaction with the Visa Officer (VO) was brief: I handed over my F2 form and passport.
o VO: "Who are you going to meet?" o Me: "I'm going to meet my husband, who is..." (I was cut off). o VO: "What do you do?" o Me: "I'm an entrepreneur, I do..." (I was cut off again). o VO: "You are not qualified at this time." I was then handed a blue refusal slip
======= I can't fathom what really transpired. The VO didn't request any documents like POF, marriage evidence, and more. Anyway, we wanted to apply again. What do you advise?
PS: Post-interview, my AVITs dashboard status changed from "Booked" to "Not Booked," but it allowed me to schedule a new appointment without requiring a new fee payment (yet to book, though). However, I was surprised, and at the same time, I think maybe a technical glitch.
Is it because I paid the fee together with the kids, and that if it expires, then the kids' application, which haven't picked a date, will also expire, and I'm not expected to pay for the kids again? WHAT SHOULD I DO IN THIS CASE?
Thanks. |

hallysonia: An F2 dependent was able to select Oct. 15, 2025 for her VISA interview, but her kids are yet to get date. She tried to select the same dates, but unable to. Now, dates are mostly in Oct-Nov 2026.
Will she enter the interview area with her kids (since they will not be interviewed anyway)?
If the ViSA is approved, and kids are still yet to get date during the 3-month validity period, does it have any bad implication?
Are there more things expected in this case?
PS: Her husband already in US since February and 3months Validlity is not applicable to him.
Thanks Go with the kids on your interview date, take along their documents. On your DS-160 you declare travelling with your children anyways, they only need to be physically present, no interviews if they are minor. Children under the age of 14 would be allowed in, unless the situation in Nigeria has changed. |

I do not think your approach is the right one, seeking a private talk, chat, email or whatever form cast aspersion on your intention. This is a public forum and its the best platform to share your opinions, advise or ask him any question. zichien: I apologize for the prior inconsiderate responses from the group. I have sent you a PM so we can talk and I can advise you. -I am worried that the consular offices are worried about your financial status with your dad's passing. As we know the typical Nigerian family story of riches to rags with the passing of the primary bread winner. I know that is not the case for you. But just wondering if that may play into the factor. -And as you said for your first renewal you went unprepared, as at the time of your 1st interview, your dad's status meant you werent subjected to rigorous questions that a typical Naija US visa applicant is used to, and are well prepared for.. so I can imagine the visa officer feeling like you are not prepared. And one rejection, makes it easier for the 2nd renewal to be rejected, meaning that you would need to be more proactive for the 3rd process. -I am happy to talk with you, via text, email, etc just to get a sense of how I can help, and can ask others I know who were refused their renewals, but ultimately were successful the steps they went through. -Also FYI i have heard its easier to renew via canada and you dont necessarily have to come to the US -Just so you know that all hope is not lost, there's been a rash of folks being denied renewal or being stuck in Nigeria after traveling for visa renewal . This has been going on even before this current administration. |

Spot on !!! This is the template. Chinese and Indian students dont play with GRE, its their JAMB to Havard, Yale and other top 10 US Universities. With Federal cuts and limited average admits for PhD and Masters, scholarship hopefuls must tick all the dots listed below. FunnyDude: For most fully funded PhD program in the US, these are some insights you need to know: In a typical year for PhD application, most schools have around 150 applicants (domestic and international), schools with app fee waivers to to have more higher applicants for a limited space of average 5 to 12 admits. Ranking of applicants: 1. Those with prior master's will be ranked higher.
2. Those with research potential (publications) will be ranked. 3. Those with strong letters from Professor will be ranked as well.
4. GRE. This is the last. Those with good GRE will be ranked (the optional GRE is just a bait, when it comes to funding most give priority to this exam for full funding) Imagine 20% of applicants having all these four criterias competing for few spaces. Do you think you'd stand a chance? Remember, these applicants are from China, Japan, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Korea, US, Singapore and other countries with strong University Research system and highly ranked universities. It's a competitive process. That's what determines the interview and offers. |

Just to add to other comments above, You could be offered an admission without GRE, but scholarship or zero deficit as you mentioned is not a guarantee or automatic with the admission. Two critical ingredients to be considered for a scholarship if your proposed program of study states funding available are GRE and CGPA above 3.5/4.0. If a school says GRE is not required for admission, YES but admission is not scholarship, GA or TA position. Higher Education is witnessing a funding cuts, only exceptional and outstanding applicants would qualify. Scholarship hopefuls should endeavor to write GRE or GMAT going forward among other requirements. Poormanpikin: @GboyegaD and FunnyDude thank you so much and I appreciate.
@Timshin Did the city of your residence play a role in determining the deficit on your i-20? Thank you so much. I initially planned to sit for both tests, but things didn't work out as expected, and I was hit hard. That's why I'm prioritizing schools that don't require them. However, if an opportunity arises, I won't hesitate to register and take either the GRE or TOEFL. I'm currently working on a paper and aim to have at least two publications by August next year. Thank you for the advice, and God bless you. |

I think your profile is good enough, your highest qualification is PGD Computer Sci...so an MSc in Cybersecurity is a career progression. Cybersecurity is classified as a critical field by DHS so there would likely be a special consideration for approval if you own your story and be confident about it, be clear and detailed , avoid ambiguous or generic response. Both my husband and child were included in my i-20.: this means an F2 I-20 for your husband and child. Your spouse an Executive Director in an oil and Gas company. He does not want to migrate just the ability to visit/holidays. If this is his true intention he would likely be refused an F2 visa because F2 is a long term visa not for short visit. B1/B2 visa is the appropriate class. Since you have a visa date already, it means you have a confirmed DS-160 on file and i hope each alphabets used project your strenght because if your DS-160 content is below expectation, VO could misinterpret your intention. Be ready for a "technical interview" on your proposed endeavor (Cybersecurity) ..this is a new update! Be truthful and dont hide any details about your circumstances. The documents expected from you are listed in the print out of your appointment or addendum on your DS-160 print out, nothing more, if your gut feelings tell you to include certain documents ...take it along to your interview. Best of luck! Cifrag: Hello Everyone,
I have Bsc. Microbiology, PGD. Computer science Been working in a financial institution but in the IT department for 10+ years. I am currently the head of the support team for 3 years now I have Microsoft certifications (Solutions Architect)
While my husband already has Bsc and Masters degree. He is currently an Executive Director in an oil and Gas company. He does not want to migrate just the ability to visit/holidays.
The course i applied to is MSC. Cybersecurity in a University(US)
Both my husband and child were included in my i-20. Complete sponsorship by my husband and we selected family sponsorship. We are using investment he made which credited to my account and the deficit is also in his account. We have the certificate of investment.
I have a sibling in US and he is legally there. Also, i was denied Canadian visa a couple of months ago due to the agent mistake in not including the US visa denial, i had 15 years ago.
Please, i need advise on how to proceed on this and the documents that might be important to present for the interview as i have a scheduled date already. Thank you. |

Go with your wife, allow the consular come to a decision. You are a married man and your wife is pregnant doesn't affect your F1 application. The consular would likely ask if its your plan to deliver the baby in the US and if you have made any medical arrangement without recourse to public funds. The decision is yours to prepare well for any situation and with your pregnant wife in the US. If you do not have the financial or have made any medical plans, simply inform the VO that your child would be delivered in Nigeria and your wife and new born would join you later...may be in 6months or even 8 months. awesomeb1783: I need some clarifications please. I have a fully funded tuition scholarship to study Master of Theological Studies in Boston University. I have obtained I 20 covering me and my wife that is pregnant. I am thinking of going alone while she joins me later. I have also applied for visa and I have appointment for July. What you wrote here is not totally true or your colleague lied to you. "tell your school to increase your funding to cover your dependents"...may be you guys cant remember or assume thats what the VO said. Its impossible for your school DSO to issue your family F2-I20 without demonstrating that you have the financial capacity of $20k in the form of a bank statement or sponsor letter. It is pretty straight forward, your GA stipend and tuition waiver or scholarship cannot suffice for your family financial need. As advised above, present a financial outlay that covers your family deficit to your school DSO, an updated F1 I-20 and F2 I-20 would be issued. We all went through similar process for our families years ago, so its nothing new. Izanghi: That is what the VO said, my colleague who went home to renew his visa early this year was also told that while his visa was renewed and his dependents were denied. The visa officer said, "tell your school to increase your funding to cover your dependents".
When I also did my interview, I was asked if my wife will be coming to visit me and I told them categorically that Yes she will be coming to visit me. |

It appears the VO was not convinced with the content of your DS-160 even before your interview, these things ties together. Your career history, previous education must establish a connection to your proposed endeavor, how you present yourself intellectually ring bells. Sources of funding on your I-20 has been scrutinized to come to that conclusion. From Theatre Arts to MBA? how many years of work experience do you have? what industry do you work, what is your role and level? and monthly renumeration? Why is your mum the sole sponsor? how does this degree benefits you and your sponsor? how many siblings do you have? does this MBA degree has a concentration in theatre arts or adjacent field? MBA is not cheap...so the VO has a ground for refusal. tosyn98: Good day everyone. I had my interview today and I really don’t know where I went wrong. I would be sharing my transcripts here. F1 visa interview First attempt: (denied) I was on window 4 and the white American guy attended to me. Even though I smiled to him he just kept a straight face. Vo: How many schools did you apply to; Me: I applied to two schools the university of Bridgeport and University of New Haven. I was admitted in both universities both I’m going with the university of New Haven because their mba program gives me access to real world business experience which aligns with my goal to successfully manage my family’s cosmetics business. Vo: who will be sponsoring your education. Me: My mum would be sponsoring me, she is the CEO of Geserve industries a cosmetics business that deals with the production of hair care products, skincare products as well. She is fully capable and willing to sponsor my education. I have the necessary bank statement to prove this. Vo; Have you ever travelled outside the country Me: Yes I travelled to Dubai in 2022 for a family vacation with my mum and siblings it was a two week holiday after which we returned to Nigeria. Okay thank you. I’m sorry we wouldn’t be able to approve your visa at this time. You can reapply again. Then he hands me the blue paper. He didn’t even give me a good reason. It says on the paper that they are not sure I am going to the United States for the reason I mentioned. Where did I go wrong as I plan to reapply before school resumes in August. |

Make it make sense, you managed to secure 25k scholarship but someone advised you to drop it for a loan!!! why not request for a downward review of the loan to cover your shortfall at IIT, this would put your application in a strong position. btw you cant compare Illinois (Chicago) to Michigan in terms of proximity to jobs....let it be known that you can seek CPT only after your first year of study (conditions applied) and OPT after your education. Successoke: Good Evening everyone, Please I need your opinions. I got admitted into MTU and IIT No funding for MTU however I was able to secure a 40k loan with Mpower. While IIT gave me 25k scholarship. Someone is suggesting I go with MTU since the loan will cover tuition and living expenses that way I will be able to get some sort of funds for rent and other expenses. I'll like people who are attending or have attended IIT to help shed more light on prospects of securing jobs to help cushion living expenses. Sorry for the long post please. Thank you. |

Its good that you are in Nigeria. IW is not automatic....the consulate can request in-person interview if they feel its the right thing to do based on individual cases. Its your IW that is refused, not F1 visa renewal. So be prepared, and you have nothing to worry about.
For God sake when it comes to United States or any country, follow the laid down rules and stop cutting corners, it doesn't end well. This is for everyone not directed at you.

Thank you for this, it's on point. Most student visa hopefuls think their visa approval journey starts with the US embassy interview. Your in-person interview is the last stage of the process, and other steps are critical. Issuing your I-20 and how funding sources are stated is also essential. Do your due diligence before requesting an I-20 from your school. Don't rush without carefully planning and choosing the best option.
You have the control to inform DSO how your funding sources should be arranged, provided you have the official financial documents with their office and have met all the requirements.
The second step is how you present yourself on DS-160; your achievements, work experience, and education can easily be spotted if you merit a visa based on where you are in your career and what you plan to do in the US. Create a compelling profile of yourself using the right words and sentences...don't just copy and paste your resume on DS-160. Review and seek guidance before you hit submit...tidy your application. The last stage is the visa interview.

For you to get a fully funded PhD in Social Work, such a level of research work and intellectual contribution to American society is needed. The VO knows you are not going to return after your studies. So, your option is to explore the post-completion OPT after your study. This allows you to contribute your extraordinary ability in social work to the United States and have first-hand experience. Godfreyalfred44: Hello everyone, I just got admitted for fully funded PhD in social work. My interview is next month. This is not correct. Efetobore1980: Hello Dade.
Can you go to an hypermarket and purchase groceries with old currency note ? No ! Your old Form- I 20 has been deactivated from the school. It's now an ordinary piece of paper .
Reschedule your appointment and ask your school to align your resumption date towards the new date or have them write an official email (print it to the embassy) allowing you to resume slightly late after resumption. Or defer your admission entirely.
Consular will void your appointment with Old Form -I 20. Ciao. |

What has changed is the cost of living and may be your sources of funding. But your SEVIS ID does not change on the new I-20. This is the most important piece of information. Do not reschedule your appointment, go with the old and new I-20 issued to you. Explain your circumstances to the VO that an updated I-20 was just issued to you. Your DS-160 has your SEVIS ID ...you should be fine. dade6270: I deferred my admission from 2024 due to Visa denial, and was issued another i-20 in August 2024 for 2025 fall session (It states on it that i deferred from 2024 fall session). Now i got an email from the school about a change in living expenses calculation, meaning that i need to have a new i-20 issued (after i prove that i can cover the new cost of living), but i have already booked an appointment using the old i-20 which i got in august 2024.
So i am wondering if can attend my interview first using the old i-20, and then get an updated one after the interview, because my interview date is quite close (Less than a month) and i do not want any administrative delays to hurt my chances. Is this something i can do, or i need to update the i-20 before attending the interview, i.e, is there any risk if i go with the old i-20, and is there any way for the VO to confirm if living expenses have been updated by the school |
Travel › Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 18 by welf99: 8:52pm On Apr 09, 2025 |
That's not correct. All he needs to show is one year of living expenses. In this case, Tuition is covered via funding from the school. He is not paying any money but upkeep for his family. Make sure you stack the living expenses in your bank account and use it to request an I-20 for you and your family. Consular or your school does not care if the amount was paid into your account a few seconds ago.
18k deficit for a PhD that takes a minimum of 4 years. Altogether, you will have to pay 18,000 x 4 = $72,000. That's a whole lot money for a PhD that is supposed to be fully funded. I do hope you have plans for the remaining years, so you don't end up stranded![/quote] |

In your transcript, you mentioned a $10,000 personal fund. Send the statement to your school and request an updated I-20. It will read Personal Fund: $10,000, Family Fund: Bleep. With these, you can explain that you are sponsoring yourself and have saved $10,000. Your sister will also contribute Bleep towards your study, as stated on the I-20. The follow-up question would likely be to establish your sister's financial capacity. You might be lucky not to have a follow-up question about your sister but about what you do and how much you earn. I would like to advise visa hopefuls that your journey to visa approvals relies heavily on your I-20 funding sources and how you answer questions on DS-160. Visa interview is the last stage of this process. Obiora94: Thanks for your comment, I appreciate you highlighting this. |

VO asked a simple question. Who is your sponsor? Your response failed to answer the question. Your reply is premeditated that's why you couldn't provide an answer. You have an opportunity but your response messed it up. What is the sources of funding stated on your I-20? Billions123: How old are you? How long have you been working?
Your sponsor is the problem |

Don't use a company account as advised above; it means the money is not readily available, and VO will have a doubt. Bulk transfer is not an issue. What is important is your closing balance. The narration should be an "education support fund" and can be transferred to your personal account. Use this account for the issuance of your I-20. Castalia: Hello all, Please is it OK to use a company's account for POF for F1 visa?
The company is a limited company with more than 1 director, but the dad who is the sponsor, is the only signatory to the company account.
If it is not OK, then can the money be transfered in bulk to the dad's personal account and used? Wont the bulk sum be queried?
Please i have been reading through the thread for a few days and I haven't seen this question answered directly. Kindly help. |

Your situation is different, most of the comments here are based on Nigeria experience not UK, so it might not be applicable to UK. If you have the deficit use self sponsor, if you have a portion of your deficit, combine your funding sources be it family sponsor or Mpower loan. Your I-20 ...self sponsor, scholarship, family fund or Mpower loan would be quoted as sources of funding. Normally you should gravitate towards PhD being a career progression but if you are unable to secure PhD position , use what you have ,be ready to defend your reasons if asked. Nobody can guarantee you a visa but if you arrange your sources of funding as i suggested put your application in strong position. Lagzyl1: Hi everyone, what’s your advice on self sponsor. I sponsored myself and my family to the UK via student visa 3 years ago and now moving to USA. I applied for PhD in Epidemiology but it’s so competitive so I had to accept the MpH in Epidemiology from Tulane University with scholarships of $20,000 my deficit is around $58k. I plan to Use Mpower but with comment here i changed my mind to use self sponsor. Can anyone enlighten me on the chance of getting visa using self sponsor and family sponsor.
Also I wish to say I already have Masters in Public health here in the UK |
