Health / Hospital In Abuja Performs 30 Successful Computer Assisted Brain Operations. by WellingtonAbj: 9:36pm On Aug 29, 2018
Wellington Hospital Abuja Performs 30 successful Computer Assisted Brain Operations in 20 months. Newsletter publication August 2018.
A total of 30 Stealth guided procedures were conducted between Dec 2016 and July 2018, Males were 19 and Females were 11 (M: F=1.7:1). Youngest age was 8 months, Oldest was 71years.
Wellington Neurosurgery Center in Abuja has remained a pioneering and leading force in contemporary Brain Surgery in this region. Stealth Neuro- navigation system for computer assisted surgeries (CAS) is the back bone behind this success. It is indeed the first of its kind in West African sub-region and this has benefited many Nigerians. It is a cutting-edge technology that has revolutionized brain and spine surgery in Nigeria, so why should anyone go abroad for such treatments?
Notable surgeons of local and international repute who have long embraced this technology are Drs. Charles Ugwuanyi, Douglas Okor, Dr. Biodun Ogungbo and Dr. Victor Udekwu. They have performed Biopsy of brain lesions, Brain tumor removal, Vascular Malformation (AVM) removal and Brain abscess drainage. One of the striking features of this system is high precision and accuracy during surgical navigation with resultant minimal post-operative morbidity and short hospital stay.
One of the star cases is an eight-month-old child (product of IVF) with a complex brain tumor situated at the center of the brain. Another is a 44 yrs old man almost wrecked by a complex brain tumor. Surgery without navigation would probably mean several weeks/months in the ICU if they are lucky to be alive. But they were discharged within a week to happy relations for further adjuvant treatments.

In line with the current policy thrust of the Government of Nigeria, the Wellington has taken this private sector initiative to provide support and equal opportunities locally to discourage medical tourism in brain and spine related operations. Anyone who decides to go abroad is simply not because there is no better options available locally.
The Wellington remains open to surgeons who are interested in using the equipment or learning how to use it for the benefit of their patients.
