HealthVitamin Supplements: Are They Worth It? by whitelakes05(op): 10:06am On May 18, 2015
WWW.WESTERNPOSTNIGERIA.COM

We are all told that a daily multivitamin supplement packs the same vitamin punch as a varied cornucopia of food, no preparation. Tons of nutrients. Zero calories. No wonder these little short cuts are so popular. Supplements are hard to resist when you’re told they might be the answer to all of your problems and i’m so sure must of us use it.

But are these concoctions too good to be true?

It’s left for you to decide for yourself. Here’s what you need to know about vitamin supplements and their long term effects to get started on your decision.

What are vitamins anyway?

Vitamins aren’t capsules, they are organic compounds that we need to survive and function. We can’t make them in our bodies, we have to get them from outside sources like food or supplements. Despite what the vitamin aisle of your grocery store might lead you to believe, only 13 recognized vitamins exist.

What do they do in our bodies?

We don’t digest vitamins like food, we have to absorb them.

Vitamins A, D, E, and K dissolve in fat, so they need fat to be absorbed. The same stomach acid released to break down fat also breaks down the vitamins so you can absorb them. If a person doesn’t have enough fat in his diet or has digestive problems, he can’t absorb fat-soluble vitamins. On the other end of the spectrum, fat cells store these vitamins long term, and excesses can build up. For example, chronic high intakes of vitamin A can lead to hypervitaminosis A, and symptoms of dizziness, nausea, headaches, and skin irritation.

PoliticsWole Soyinka Identifies Two Persons Who Piloted Apc’s Change by whitelakes05(op): 9:14am On May 18, 2015
Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has revealed that before the presidential election he got a message from Aso Rock telling him to warn Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi against his campaign against President Goodluck Jonathan.

I Was Told To Warn Amaechi By Aso rock But... - Wole Soyinka
Professor Wole Soyinka
Speaking on Thursday in Lagos during the public presentation of a book on the compilation of the achievements of Amaechi’s administration entitled ‘Dynamics of Change: The Amaechi Years,’ Prof. Soyinka said:

”Somebody sent me a message from Aso Rock to tell Amaechi that he is playing with fire, his playing with giants and cockatoos. I never delivered that message. Instead, I decided to study Amaechi more closely”.

Prof. Soyinka also commended Amaechi for standing up to President Jonathan during the NGF crisis.

He identified the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader Bola Tinubu and Amaechi as the two main agents who brought down the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“The political atmosphere today, whatever you call it, change or hope or cautious hope and naked hope or careless hope, I recognise two personalities, in particular, who led the chant of change. One of them, I call him the architect of the process, the architect, in fact, that houses the essence of hope. That is Ahmed Bola Tinubu. The other person was unconsciously, perhaps, the arrow head of that charge that led to the change and that is the man that we gather here to celebrate.”

He also said Amaechi took a gamble during the crisis, which exposed him to the wrath of the presidency.

Dame Patience Jonathan received victory in the court battle with Aisha Buhari over holding an emergency meeting of African First Ladies Peace Mission (AFLPM).

The application was thrown down by Abuja High Court on Thursday, May 14.

Patience JonathanReport has it that, the judge said the affidavits were opposing to Section 115 (3) (4) of the Evidence Act 2011. The judge also said that the application was not presented timeously before the court.

The court stated that the plaintiffs became aware of this summit since April 23, 2015 but did not bring the claim until May to stop the meeting which was to hold today.

It was said that by the nature of the occasion, dignitaries must have arrived Nigeria from all parts of the continent and by its nature, huge resources would have been put in to start up the event.

The notice to stop the meeting was moved yesterday and the court brought its ruling on the same day since the court had no choice as the event was fixed for today.

On their turn, the plaintiffs, who comprise Nana Module Onwodi, Ekemma Ugborough Arisa, Louisa Ono Eikhomun and Deborah Oboh appealed that the said emergency meeting called by Mrs. Jonathan was called in “bad faith” as it had in purpose to scuttle any chance of Aisha Buhari becoming the President of AFLPM.

PoliticsI Have Not Learnt Any Useful Thing From Jonathan – Buhari by whitelakes05(op): 3:28pm On May 15, 2015
President-elect Muhammadu Buhari has affirmed that he is yet to learn any useful thing from the outgoing President, Goodluck Jonathan’s government.

Buhari stated this on Thursday when a committee from the Centre for Human Security of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, presented a five-point policy document to him at the Buhari Support Organisation office in Abuja.

Speaking earlier, the All Progressives Congress, accused the Federal Government of not cooperating with the transition committee set up by the President-elect.

Garba Shehu, the Director of Media and Publicity of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organisation, said, “Buhari regretted that the outgoing government that is supposed to give him tips on how to take off has done nothing so far”.

According to him, the President-elect “thanked the Obasanjo initiative for the gesture, assuring the committee that his incoming administration will be needing advice as time goes on.”

Areas covered by the committee in the document include the economy, security, power, education and infrastructure.

He said that Obasanjo had set up a think tank to carry out a study on the challenges facing the country in the five key areas.

The robbers had on March 26, deployed automatic weapons and dynamites with which they blew up the banks before making away with huge sums of money.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed that six policemen and seven civilians, including a Wema Bank Manager, died during the attack, while five of the robbers were killed by the police during a gun battle.

PoliticsREVEALED: Hired Writers In Proxy War For Tinubu, Fayemi by whitelakes05(op): 11:54am On May 13, 2015

The centre can no longer hold and the Falcon can no longer hear the Falconer as the simmering conflict of interest between the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and his erstwhile political ‘boy’ and former Ekiti State governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has now blown open.

Both camps, WESTERN POST can reveal, have now engaged sponsored writers to fight their battles, which has further advertised the cracks within the APC in the South-west that used to be one united bloc.

Fayemi has never really seen Tinubu as his political godfather despite the fact that the former Lagos State used his vast contacts and resources to ensure his election as Ekiti State governor in his first term.

The former governor instead related to and saw former Ekiti State governor Niyi Adebayo as his own political godfather.

After he lost re-election in June 2014, a project to which Tinubu was not fully committed, Fayemi began to further distance himself from Tinubu and when General Muhammadu Buhari emerged as APC presidential candidate, the former governor moved over to Abuja to provide intellectual support for Buhari until he emerged President-elect.

Fayemi, along with some others around Buhari, now prides himself as a technocrat and they have constituted themselves into a camp that would determine who gets what office from Buhari. The former Ekiti State governor has dubbed himself the Chief Strategist of the President-elect, General Buhari.

The media war began with some smear campaigns against Tinubu carried by an influential newspaper in the country in the last few weeks.

Fayemi and a few other anti-Tinubu elements have been linked with the smear campaigns but WP cannot independently confirm this.

But a counter report by an online portal, which emerged about two weeks, was christened “Fresh Smear Campaign against Bola Tinubu Uncovered: Adams Oshiomhole, Rabiu Kwankwaso and John Oyegun also targeted”.

The report indicated that certain young Turks within the party led by former Ekiti State governor, Fayemi, is leading the pack of those that consider themselves as ‘technocrats’ against “the real pillars of APC who toiled for his formation and emergence as a formidable party, which wrestled power from the Peoples Democratic Party”.

Also said to be in the camps are outgoing Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, Governor-elect of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai and outgoing Governor of Rivers State and former Director –General of Buhari/Osinbajo Presidential Campaign, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi.

Fashola had sponsored a candidate, his former Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General of Lagos, Supo Sasore, for the state governorship race against Tinubu’s candidate, Akinwumi Ambode, who eventually won the election.

Amaechi on his part holds Tinubu responsible for his failure to emerge as General Buhari’s running mate, while el-Rufai is only playing the Hausa-Fulani ethnic card that would not like a Yoruba man to wield too much power in a government headed by a Northerner.

The report claimed that Buhari’s open acknowledgment of Tinubu’s sacrifice and role in the March 28 poll drew ill-feelings among the camp who allegedly wants to cut Tinubu to size.

WP learnt that since the report was published by the online portal, Fayemi has been battling to explain his own side and to halt further publication of such damaging reports.

“Fayemi is uncomfortable with such publication and he has launched out to get his own side of the development published, a favourable article at that,” a source close to the former governor said.

But while at that, another article critical of the former governor’s new found role entitled “What Does Fayemi Want?” emerged in some national newspapers at the weekend and on Monday.

In the article, the writer, one Hakeem Adisa, “a keen political observer of the nation’s political affairs” castigated Fayemi for his alleged moves against Tinubu.

“Given dispassionate thinking, it could be seen that this campaign of calumny is bound to fail ab initio because of the monumental roles played by Tinubu, Oshiomhole, Kwankwaso and Oyegun, the true pillars of APC in ensuring victory for Buhari, which he might still count on in future elections. For instance, in the presidential election of March 28, the yeoman’s efforts of Tinubu in securing the frontiers of the South-west for Buhari and the deployment of his vast networks and effective coordination of political big wigs for same purpose across the country cannot be overlooked,” the writer said.

“It is an undeniable fact that Tinubu’s influence swung the APC’s presidential ticket in Buhari’s direction at the national convention held last November in Lagos against formidable contenders like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso,” he added.

Then a clincher: “Again, what does Kayode Fayemi want? At this juncture, it is imperative to trace the political trajectory of the man that is trying to bite the fingers that not only fed him but also made him a notable political figure in Ekiti State and Nigeria in general. The public may not be aware that Fayemi was under the guise of working for the Africa Leadership Forum (ALF) surreptitiously working for the democratic draconian former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

“Without being immodest, it could be stated that he was at a point indirectly a PDP man before the lure of ambition to become governor drove him apart from the Ota farmer. So, way back in 2005, Opeyemi Bamidele, former Information Commissioner in Lagos State, brought Fayemi to then Governor Tinubu who took it upon himself to help him achieve his goal of becoming governor of Ekiti State, no matter the cost. The first seed money running into millions of Naira, with which he commenced his political voyage, was given to him through a powerful Tinubu core loyalist commissioner in the Centre of Excellence.”
