The imminent absence of the South-East from top leadership positions in the Senate and House of Representatives is of little bother to leaders of the region, former Anambra State governor, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, has said. However, radical member of the Second Republic House of Representatives, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, yesterday, put the plight of the region to its decision to put all their eggs in one basket, even as renowned economist, Dr. Pat Utomi, cautioned All Progressives Congress, APC to ensure that it gives a fair representation to all sections of the country. The reactions came as APC, which is set to take over the Presidency and the National Assembly, denied taking a decision on the zoning of the top positions of government. The party’s assertion nonetheless, there were indications that APC had zoned the office of Senate President to the North-Central with Senators Bukola Saraki and George Akume as the major contenders. Other principal positions in the two chambers are being contested by the North-East, North-West and South-West. The South-South, which only has one returning member to the House of Representatives, is also angling for the office of Deputy Speaker. The South-East, which has no returning member of APC in the Senate and the House of Representatives, has been completely left out of any of the principal officers’ positions. Ndigbo aren’t worried—Ezeife Reacting to the development yesterday, Chief Ezeife, who governed Anambra State between 1992 and 1993 said: “I do not see anything wrong with what APC had done. “What the party has done is in line with their convention. I do not see any reason why people should be worried about the fate of the Igbo. “We are not worried. Only those who do not see us as people of destiny are worried. However, there are lessons to be learned from the outcome of things. But we are not worried because lessons have been learned.” Decisions’ve consequences — Mohammed In his remarks, Dr Mohammed said the decision of Ndigbo to put all their eggs in one basket will have consequences politically. He said: “I must say I do not have the privilege of seeing what the incoming government, led by APC, has drafted in terms of zoning offices. “However, it is evident that the Igbo mobilized towards one candidate and I think APC is justified for not zoning any major office to their zone. “I am not a believer of zoning, but with the complicity in Nigerian politics, rotation has been brought to the forefront and we will continue to battle with this until Nigeria matures politically. “It is not just the result of the last elections that showed that the South-East zone had tilted towards one candidate, results of previous elections also showed that and they have had it so good under previous administration. “They have, therefore, taken it for granted that they will get things on a platter of gold. “APC is absolutely justified with the arrangement of not zoning any major office to the South-East. If they are given some of the big positions, what will other zones like North-West, who gave the President-elect big votes, ask for? “So I think it will be stupid to give big positions like Senate President or Secretary to the Government to the South-East zone when the zones that gave bloc votes to the President-elect will just be watching.” I expect good representation—Utomi On his part, Professor Utomi said he expects APC to ensure equal representation from the geo-political zones even as he played down comments on the issue as he said the party had not come out with a categorical policy on the issue. Pressed further, he said: “What is favour and what is not favour? I think any political party that wants to govern effectively would seek effective representation from across the country in the executive and legislative leadership of that country.” APC’s assurances Meanwhile, APC has urged Nigerians to disregard the wild speculations making the rounds concerning the appointment of ministers and the zoning of offices under the incoming Buhari administration. In a statement in Abuja on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, APC said there was no truth to anything that had been dished out by the rumour mill concerning the issues of appointment, especially the zoning of the National Assembly’s principal positions and other offices. It said in the true tradition of APC, all issues of public interest will be handled transparently and conveyed to Nigerians through the usual communication channels. The party said: “No appointments have been made and no offices have been zoned. The main concern of our party at the moment is to ensure a smooth transition and to hit the ground running in the overall interest of the long-suffering people of Nigeria. “At the appropriate time, Nigerians will be informed of the appointments made and the offices zoned.” ‘An effective govt’s priority’ Also speaking, President, South-East/South-South Professionals, Mr. Emeka Ugwu-Oju, said merit should be promoted in the allocation of government positions even as he called for the immediate implementation of the report of the 2014 National Conference. He said: “The number one priority of the peoples of South East/South-South is the implementation of the National Conference Resolutions as the foundation of the recreation of a new Nigeria that will be anchored on justice, equity, merit and the Rule of Law. “That is the main reason they overwhelmingly voted for Jonathan. “Majority of them will prefer the immediate implementation of the National Conference Resolutions in lieu of the National Assembly positions, because it will benefit more of the people than just a handful of individuals. “Any political party that wants to govern effectively would seek effective representation from across the country in the executive and legislative leadership positions.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/apc-zoning-ndigbo-not-worried-on-being-left-out-says-ezeife/#sthash.iLMQ2w64.dpuf

The Taraba State Secretary to the State Government Barrister Gibon Timothy Kataps has said that the burning and looting of his country home at Gyembu the headquarters of Sadauna local government area by tugs was a sacrifice to democracy. The SSG stated this while speaking on his ordeal on the post election violence in Gyembu to Vanguard at his house in Jalingo. He said the burning of his house and those of former Nigerian Ambassador to Cameroon Amb. Emmanuel Njuwa, and a house member representing Mbamga constituency at the state house of assembly was targeted to rubbish the governorship election result from the local government area. It would be recalled that there were serious crisis following the out come of last week governorship elections at Gyembu in Sadauna local government area which led to the burning of houses and distraction of properties, and imposition of 24 hours curfew in the area by the state government. The SSG lament that “Before we left Jalingo to Gyembu on the eve of the governorship election, we got a security information that our opponents had an original result sheet of the governorship election which they wanted to fill and present to INEC as the out come of the governorship election from Sadauna” “We went to Sadauna and we were very vigilant because while we were in Gyembu we also gathered that they planned to use violent to substitute authentic result with fake one” “While we were trying our best to call our boys to order so as to prevent any violent, we also discovered that a large number of youths who were taken refuge in Gyembu as a result of insurgent from Bauchi, Gombe and Yola were recruited by those desperate politicians to break up the crisis” “After election the results started coming into Gyembu for collation and that was when the tension spark off, because I refused to give an inch and I was calling the youths to order at all points when I suspect there may be crisis they decided to say my house should be looted” “The idea was to distract me from the pooling unit. “They went and invaded my house, breaking the fence as the gate was strong for them , they looted the properties inside the house before setting it on fire” “The plan was that if I leave INEC Collation Center with the security to go and control the crisis inside the town the other group should come and attack the returning office and force him to announce a result ” “My joy today is that God gave me straight to withstand the pressure because if I had allowed the substitution of the authentic result, APC would have been announced the winner of Taraba state governorship election because of what transpired here in Jalingo” “What happened in Taraba state election was terrible, The result of the state house of assembly at Ngoroje was announced and a winner was declared, the gap between the APC candidate and the PDP candidate was just 3 votes, the cancelation was over 50,000 but the APC candidate was declare the winner” “At the governorship the state returning officer refused to declare PDP who was ahead of APC for over 50,000 votes the winner of the election after canceling Donga local government area without any justification” “After we succeeded in protecting the results while coming home I saw many of the youths 80 per cent of them I can call them by their names, I saw them carrying my plates, spurns, garment, TVs, rugs and so many other things, it was funny” “My joy is I was able to protect democracy, if three of these houses were to be destroyed and I should protect the result of the electorate so be it” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/my-burnt-house-sacrifice-for-democracy-says-taraba-ssg/#sthash.s2ypXpAf.dpuf |
The state police spokesman, Butswat Asinim, told reporters in Yenagoa, the state capital, that a full investigation had been launched. “It was a stray bullet that killed the deceased during a gang battle in the area,” he said, adding, “The incident occurred on Sunday night, April 19.” According to Mr. Asinim, the deputy clerk was hit by a stray bullet as rival cult gangs engaged in a shoot-out. He said the police were currently combing the area, promising that the culprits would be netted. A resident in the area told our correspondent that the deceased was shot on the forehead at close range by armed men suspected to be cultists. “The deceased was shot dead when some youths with guns and machetes stormed the street to launch a reprisal attack on a rival cult group. “When the cultists discovered that their rival cult members had fled the area before they arrived, they started looting shops and assaulting unsuspecting residents. “The man that was murdered was in his house when the cultists raided his wife’s shop. As they dragged her purse, she began shouting ‘thieves, thieves’. It was that noise that drew the attention of her husband. The moment he rushed into the shop, the armed youths shot him at close range,” said the eyewitness. He disclosed that the area was plagued by armed robbery and gang-related crimes. http://saharareporters.com/2015/04/20/bayelsa-police-confirm-killing-deputy-clerk-state-assembly |

Scarcity of premium motor spirit, popularly called petrol, has again hit Ilorin metropolis and other towns in Kwara State. Our correspondent, who monitored the development in Ilorin on Monday, observed that many filling stations were locked, while only few stations were selling the product to desperate motorists and other users. The situation led to long queues of motorists waiting at the few filling stations selling the product to see if they would be lucky. The motorists, who spoke to our correspondent, lamented that the scarcity had unleashed hardship on them less than two weeks after the conclusion of the general elections. They called on relevant agencies of government to quickly intervene in order to prevent the hardship from escalating. A taxi driver, Fatai Kadri, said he had been on the queue for over two hours and had yet to purchase the product, adding that the scarcity of petrol had prevented him from engaging in his business and wondered how he would cater for his family’s needs. “I have been here for over two hours waiting and hoping that I will buy fuel. Up till now, I am yet to buy. This is unbearable. I do not know how to feed my family today when I get back home,” he said. Reports from other towns and rural areas of Kwara State indicated that the fuel scarcity was biting harder there. The Chairman, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association, Ilorin chapter, Mr. Olanrewaju Okanlawon, said the fuel scarcity in the state was caused by the non-availability of the product at the Ilorin depot. “We do not have petrol at the Ilorin,” he said. http://www.punchng.com/business/business-economy/fuel-scarcity-hits-kwara-again/

Shekarau’s condolence message, which was conveyed through his Special Adviser on Media, Dr Nnamdi Olebara, was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Abuja. He described the late senator as a pragmatic and forthright politician who was highly cerebral and unrepentantly patriotic with a clear and straight stance on every issue. “His contributions to the reforms in the education sector are tremendous and priceless; he was an esteemed team player who has left the education sector better than he met it. “We in the education sector commiserate with his family and pray to God Almighty to grant his gentle soul eternal rest; solace to his family and loved ones and bless Nigeria with more Uche Chukwumerijes,”he said.
