The political situation in Bayelsa state has taken a bizarre turn as gunmen on Saturday night invaded the Yenagoa home of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Domestic Matters, Dr. Waripamowei Dudafa and carted away an undisclosed amount of money after destroying the safe kept in one of his rooms. Family sources said that the gunmen were asking after him and ransacking the entire building looking for him. The source said that gunmen who invaded the home were not looking like hoodlums. The 10 man gang were allegedly dressed in mobile police uniform when they came calling. They were said to have stormed the residence in Okaka Estate, Yenagoa at about 8pm when the three mobile policemen guarding the residence of the Presidential aide were not around. The gunmen were said to have gained entry into the premises of Dudafah after allegedly telling the security men (civilians) that they were policemen on operations from the police headquarters. When they got into the premises, they were said to have bound the Chief gateman, one Muhammed Garba, tying his legs, his hands and covering his eyes and mouth. An eyewitness, who craved anonymity, alleged the attack on Dudafah's home was politically motivated. He said the incident took place few minutes after results of some rescheduled House of Assembly polls were released and Dudafa backed candidate on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance defeated his Peoples Democratic Party opponent in Kolokuma-Opokuma Constituency. Narrating his ordeal, Garba, who said he had been working with Dudafa for eight years, said the suspects came in two black Sport Utility Vehicles. "They ordered me to open the gate. I opened a small gate and saw about 10 of them. They pushed me and they gained entry into the premises. They spanked my head. They tied my hands, mylegs, covered my mouth and eyes with celotape. They went for my room at the security gate and asked me to show them the apartments of police security in the building. They also asked for Dudafa (Oga) house keys. I told them I did not know where they were since I was not the person keeping them. They said they would kill me if they eventually found the keys in my place. I kept quiet. After ransacking my room, they saw the keys. They started using them to open the main building. "The man leading the operations, asked his colleagues to talk gently so that when my colleague who had gone to buy noodles at that time would not suspect something was amiss. No sooner had they said that than my colleague came in, and they caught him. They now abandoned me bound, and took my second to be directing them. It was my second that was now showing them way. They also went to boys quarters and also seized Dudafah cousin living there. They also tied him. They were threatening them that if they did not cooperate with them, they would waste them." Garba said when they had held all of them captive, they went inside the building and started ransacking everywhere. He said they came also with axes and saws which they were using to cut something inside the apartments. The 55 year old Garba, a father of one, said the operations lasted about three hours before they left. Dudafah's cousin, Pere Ozoru, said he was sleeping his room when the gunmen came. He said it was the second gate man, Ibrahim, that brought them to his apartment. When newsmen visited the residence on Sunday, it was discovered that most apartments in the gigantic edifice were ransacked and furniture were destroyed. In one of the rooms, a safe was destroyed and it could not be ascertained how much could have been carted away from the safe. Efforts to get the police reaction were unsuccessful as calls to the spokesman for the Bayelsa State Command, Mr. Asinim Butswat, rang out several times. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/gunmen-invade-jonathans-special-assistants-home-in-yenagoa/207218/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter |

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has said his asking for forgiveness should not be taken for cowardice by his opponents, saying his tenure in office will be determined by God. He said he took the step to seek a genuine reconciliation with the All Progressives Congress, whose 19 lawmakers in the state House of Assembly were plotting his impeachment. The governor spoke on Sunday at the thanksgiving service organised for him at the Cathedral Church of Emmanuel, Anglican Communion, Ado Ekiti, to celebrate his electoral victory at the Supreme Court. Fayose said, “I asked for forgiveness for reconciliation and to pursue genuine peace. Waiving the olive branch does not mean cowardice, it is for peace. “Conspiracy is against God’s will. What better way could one seek peace other than asking for forgiveness.” The governor advised the APC to emulate President Goodluck Jonathan who conceded defeat and saved Nigeria from disintegrating. “When I contested for Senate they said I lost and I did not fight anyone. I did not go to the tribunal and I was saying good things about the government then. The opposition should be courageous enough to accept defeat. I follow Jonathan in and out of office. Jonathan gave up for survival of Nigeria. Jonathan prevented the prophecy that Nigeria would break up in 2015. “I’m enjoying the mandate of God through his people and that cannot be controverted. My sin is because I allowed the common man to breathe the air of hope. “The people have spoken (governorship election), they said it was military intervention. They spoke the second term (presidential election), is that one photochromic? And they spoke again the third time (House of Assembly election). “If God that gave me victory cannot defend me, I better go home. If the people cannot defend the mandate they gave to me, I better go home. Power doesn’t come from man. Power belongs to God. Anyone against the voice of God is following Satan’s way. “In a democracy, you need a simple majority to win elections, but I enjoy total majority. They want to take government by force, firing shots at people; that is coup against the people. They said they are coming again tomorrow, we are waiting for them.” But the APC lawmakers advised Fayose to stop inciting the people, saying his Sunday broadcast had demonstrated that he was not committed to genuine reconciliation. The APC lawmakers in a statement on Sunday accused the governor of inciting the people against them in the broadcast. A statement by the Special Adviser on Media to Speaker Adewale Omirin, Wole Olujobi, said the governor in his broadcast demonstrated that he was never committed to the peace he preached barely 24 hours before his inciting broadcast. “How do you reconcile this inciting broadcast with a plea he made for peace not quite 24 hours earlier, which Ekiti people and indeed Nigerians thought was a good move by the governor to thaw the frozen relationship between him and the lawmakers? “This is a confirmation of what Dr. Omirin said in his Sunday Punch interview that the governor can’t be trusted in any peace move. “It is shocking that the governor, who refused to make any remark or commitment during the church service after the man of God appealed to him to embrace peace, could go on air few minutes after the church service to start inciting workers, traders, okada riders and artisans to defend him with their last drop of blood. “As if his inciting live broadcast was not enough, Ekiti people were shocked when a public service announcement started running intermittently on the state media urging okada riders to look out for strange faces across the state and attack them because they are thugs that are being imported into the state by the APC lawmakers. “They are also to converge on the House of Assembly as early as 6am on Monday to prevent the lawmakers from performing their legal duties,” the statement added. Stressing that they were not planning any invasion of the state with thugs, the lawmakers called the attention of Nigerians to the unlawful acts of the governor in his desperate move to ensure that the lawmakers were rendered ineffective in the discharge of their lawful duties. http://www.punchng.com/news/my-plea-for-forgiveness-not-cowardice-fayose/

A BOAT crowded with migrants capsized in the sea north of Libya overnight, leaving at least 24 confirmed dead with the death toll expected to rise into the hundreds. According to the Associated Press (AP), Italy’s Coast Guard in a statement said the migrants’ 20-meter (66- foot) vessel was reported to be sinking as a Portuguese-registered merchant ship, the King Jacob, approached to attempt a rescue. It picked up 28 passengers, but the boat then capsized, sending hundreds more tumbling into the water. The Coast Guard’s command and rescue coordination center in Rome said the boat might have overturned “because its occupants moved to the side closest to the cargo ship.” The Italian news agency, ANSA, said the boat may have held 700 passengers. But the Coast Guard and other authorities said they had no immediate way to determine how many were aboard or how many might still be rescued. The estimated death toll was expected to be clarified as officers interviewed survivors, although many bodies were expected never to be recovered. According to Times of Israel, Pope Francis 1 was among those following the news. “There are fears there could be hundreds of dead,” Francis told the faithful in St. Peter’s Square. He bowed his head in silent prayer as did many of the tens of thousands in the crowd. Wreckage of the boat was spotted in the sea. “There are large fuel stains, pieces of wood, life jackets,” Italian Border Police, Gen. Antonino Iraso, whose force has boats deployed in the rescue effort, told Sky TG24 TV. When asked whether the boat capsized because the migrants rushed to one side as the Portuguese vessel pulled alongside, Iraso replied: “The dynamics aren’t clear. But this is not the first time that has happened.” Italy is the number-one destination for illegal immigration to the European Union, and the numbers of migrants attempting the dangerous crossing by sea from Libya swells as the springtime weather improves, providing calmer seas and warmer water temperatures. But the smugglers’ boats are invariably overcrowded and often too small for the open seas. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/04/hundreds-feared-dead-as-migrant-ship-capsizes-near-libya/

Nigeria’s economy is to grow faster than those of France and United Kingdom by 2030, a consultancy firm, Price WaterhouseCoopers, PwC, has projected. Making the forecast in its latest report titled: “The world in 2050: Will the shift in global economic power continue?” PwC reported that China will be the largest economy by 2030, while India may challenge the United States for second place by 2050 even as it predicted that the emerging economies of Nigeria, Indonesia and Mexico could push the UK and France out of the top ten economies of the world by the year. The firm, however, hinged Nigeria’s and other countries’ capacities to meet the growth trajectories on the extent to which their governments are able to build their institutions to global standards, diversify their economies and sustained growth-friendly policies. Reflecting on the report, the PwC Nigeria’s Chief Economist and co-author, Mr. Andrew S. Nevin, explained: “Nigeria’s potential advantages for future growth include a large consumer market, a strategic geographic location, and a young and highly entrepreneurial population. “With drop in oil pric, which could thwart this possibility as a result of the attendant pressure on fiscal policy, Nigeria will need to manage the oil price decline effectively at all levels of government and create a sustainable platform for diversification into the sectors. “We are all aware of the significant headwinds created by the rapid drop in the oil price, putting pressure on the fiscal and monetary systems, as well as reducing economic growth in the short term. “To achieve its longterm economic potential, Nigeria will need to manage the oil price decline effectively at all levels of government and create a sustainable platform for diversification into the sectors that we know will drive the economy in the future – including power, agriculture, manufacturing, telecoms, hospitality and real estate.” According to him, over the past decade, Nigeria has boasted superior economic growth and, with the right reforms and investments, the country could become one of the world’s leading economies by 2030, with further progress by 2050. The report stated further that Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia are set to be notable risers with Colombia and Poland growing more strongly by 2050 than Brazil and Russia. With a long-term projections of potential GDP growth up to 2050 for 32 of the largest economies in the world, covering 84 per cent of total global GDP, the PwC report projects insist that the current global economic power shift away from established advanced economies in North America, Western Europe and Japan will continue over the next 35 years – despite a projected slowdown in Chinese growth after around 2020. Noting that the world economy is projected to grow at an average of just over three per cent yearly from 2014-50, doubling in size by 2037 and nearly tripling by 2050, the report which tipped China as the largest economy by 2030 on any measure, however stated that it expected China’s growth rate to slow markedly after around 2020 as its population ages and high investment rate runs into diminishing marginal returns. “Eventual reversion to the global average has been common for past high growth economies such as Japan and South Korea and we expect China to follow suit,” it stated. Other highlights from PwC’s projections are that India has the potential to sustain its higher growth rate for longer and become a $10 trillion economy by around 2020 in purchasing power (PP) terms, or around 2035 at market exchange rates while emerging economies like Indonesia, Brazil and Mexico have the potential to be larger than the UK and France by 2030. http://www..com/talk/topic,256197.0.html

Background My name is Cynthia Morgan and I am 23 years old. I am a musician and I was raised by a single mother, Sherifat Morgan She is a gospel artiste based in Benin City, Edo State. I had a beautiful childhood where my mum was firm yet loving; she played the role of a father to my siblings and I. She is my biggest fan. I haven’t completed my university education. I took a break to concentrate on my musical career. Calling Music for me began at the age of seven. I started in the children’s choir, after which I moved to the youth choir and later joined the Christian Union choir. I began putting out music at the age of 16 and I recorded a six -track demo album. I released my debut single with General Pype titled ‘Dotty Stepping’ at the age of 17. In 2012, I met Jude Okoye in Atlanta; he appreciated my talent, took an interest in my career and signed me to his label, Northside INC. Gospel music My mum is a gospel artiste, so she obviously understands my craft. Many expected me to become a gospel artiste like my mum but that isn’t possible because that is not my calling. She appreciates my style of music and is my greatest fan. A lot of people do not know that I have an alter ego which is the cool-headed Cynthia Morgan. Queen Ure and I I do not have much to say about her; she wanted relevance and I gave it to her. I am actually very glad I was able to help her because I gave her more followers and exposure. She rode on my fame to make a name for herself. How could she claim to own a song that doesn’t exist on the Internet? Complexion People who complain about my skin tone are clearly those who do not know me very well. I did not bleach my skin and one thing they fail to understand is that you can’t remain the same forever. The only constant thing in life is change and I have grown into a beautiful young woman. Nudity I am a proud, beautiful Nigerian lady who is comfortable in her own skin. I am free to post anything on the social media .Whatever I post depends on my mood and what I would love to share with my fans at that point in time. Anyone who feels offended should unfollow me. I don’t read the negative comments because it doesn’t matter to me. Competition I am a distinct artiste who does not feel threatened by any other female artiste. I believe in my talent and my capabilities. I don’t see competition; all I see are opportunities to excel in my craft and in the Nigerian music industry. I don’t jump on the bandwagon blindly; rather I set standards for others to follow. I admire all the talented Nigerian artistes who stand out. Achievements My performance at the ‘Headies’ 2014 earned me a standing ovation. My track KuchiKuchi was featured on American music artiste, Gucci Mane’s 2013 March mix tape. The mix tape also featured top American artistes like Lil Wayne, 2Chains, Future and Waka Flocka Relationship I am in a relationship with my music so I do not have time for a lover at the moment. My man needs to understand me perfectly and appreciate my personality first as an artiste and then, as Cynthia Morgan. Prized possessions I think my height and my talent are the greatest assets I possess. I am unique in several ways.. Fashion I am crazy about colognes and wrist watches. The most expensive item in my wardrobe is a wristwatch which cost me N12m.

No fewer than 10 AK 47 rifle-slinging men suspected to be political thugs were arrested by the police in Nasarawa State on Saturday. The armed men were apprehended at Anwgan Mangu polling unit in Chiroma ward during the re- run election for the Lafia/Obi federal constituency in the state. A voter, Friday Negedu, told SUNDAY PUNCH that, during the course of voting, a man carrying a Permanent Voter Card belonging to a female from a different polling unit trying to cast his vote was noticed by other voters who informed security agents. The apprehended voter, according to the eyewitness, called his mates for help. His mates, who were suspected to be political thugs came out with guns blazing, shooting into the air. The development caused the voters and officials in the polling unit to flee the unit. The eyewitness added that the shooting attracted the attention of some soldiers who arrested the shooters. He said, “The election was going on smoothly and when we discovered a man with a female card trying to cast his vote and we called the attention of the security agents. But all of a sudden he called some thugs who came in their large numbers and invaded the polling unit.” Our reporter, who was at the scene of the incident, sighted some soldiers who drove in and impounded three cars belonging to the suspected thugs. Seven AK47 rifles were discovered in the vehicles with registration number AL 953 LFA, AKW 36XA and AJ 986 LFA. The arrested men were later whisked to the state Criminal Investigation Department while one of them who was shot escaped with bullet wounds. A soldier who did want his name in print told our correspondent that thugs engaged them in a physical combat during the invasion of Anwagn Mangu poling unit. Efforts by our correspondent to reach the Police Public Relation Officer, Nasarawa State Command, Mr. Ismaila Numan, for comments proved abortive as all calls to his mobile phone were not responded to as at the time of filing this report. http://www.punchng.com/news/police-arrest-10-recover-rifles-at-nasarawa-polling-unit/ |

According to CNN, violence targeting immigrant shops first started in the port city of Durban, where two foreigners and three South Africans were killed, after residents accused African immigrants of taking their jobs and committing crimes. A sixth death also occurred on Wednesday, and the body of the 58-year-old foreign national was found in Verulam town, where a mob attacked the man at his home. As such, because of the ongoing inhuman xenophobic attacks in South Africa on foreigners, Nigerians inclusive, the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria recently announced that evacuation of Nigerian citizens will begin on Monday, April 20th. The commission reportedly made the announcement via a statement, according to Leadership.ng, which reads in part: “As from Monday 20th of April 2015, the process of evacuating Nigerians from South Africa will begin as directed by the Federal Government of Nigeria due to the ongoing Xenophobic attacks on black foreign nationals in the Republic of South Africa. To that effect an evacuation register will be open at the High Commission in Pretoria for Nigerians intending to return to Nigeria but cannot afford flight tickets.” Meanwhille, The Nigerian Union in South Africa has said it has concluded arrangements to resettle 50 Nigerians affected by the ongoing xenophobic attacks. The President of the union, Ikechukwu Anyene, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on phone from Pretoria, South Africa, on Saturday. Mr. Anyene said the Nigerians were displaced at Jeppes Town, near Johannesburg. “We met about 300 Nigerians in Jeppes town, near Johannesburg, who fled for their safety and about 50 of them do not have any place to stay. “We are making arrangements with the Nigerian mission in South Africa to get them a place to stay for their safety. “The Nigerian union has also presented relief materials to those affected by the attacks and we are in touch with various branch chapters of the union in the provinces on their safety and security,’’ he said. According to him, Nigerian shops and businesses in Durban and Johannesburg have been looted and some burnt. He said that two shops belonging to Nigerians in Durban were looted and they lost goods worth 400,000 Rand. “In Jeppes Town, near Johannesburg, five shops were looted and one burnt while the estimated loss is put at One million Rand. “The incidents have been reported to the police and we are still taking stock of attacks on Nigerians,’’ he said. Mr. Anyene reiterated the union’s call to the Federal Government to put more pressure on the South African government to halt the attacks. The Nigerian foreign minister had however claimed on Thursday that Nigerians had so far not been attacked, saying it would only evacuate Nigerians only if the situation gets worse. “With the discussions I have been having with Nigeria’s Head of Mission in Pretoria, no Nigeria n has so far been affected,” the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aminu Wali said Thursday in Abuja. ”They informed me that they have called the Nigerian community and addressed them and told them to close their shops, stay home and keep out of trouble and obey the laws of South Africa. “They have also confirmed that the South African authority has moved in to take actions that would forestall any further disturbance in South Africa,” Mr. Wali said. Mr. Wali said it will move to evacuate Nigerian citizens if the xenophobic attacks get worse. “If it gets worse it is the duty of our country to make sure our people are brought back, and we are taking that duty serious. ”We are not prepared to allow any of our nationals to be subjected to such inhuman treatment. “We are monitoring the situation and will now take action according to the situation that develops,” he said. Xenophobia in South Africa dates back to 1994 and are mainly targeted at citizens of other African Countries. In May 2008 a series of xenophobic attack left 62 people dead. In the current attack, at least five people have been killed and hundreds forced to flee their homes in one of South Africa’s worst outbreaks of xenophobic violence in years. http://www..com/talk/topic,256137.0.html

South African President Jacob Zuma has visited a refugee camp in the port of Durban after a fresh outbreak of anti-foreigner violence. Mr Zuma told those who had fled the violence that it went against South African values and he would bring it to an end. But he was jeered by some in the crowd who accused him of acting too slowly. At least six people have died in xenophobic attacks in Durban, with violence spreading to other areas. Migrants, mostly from other African states and Asia, have moved to South Africa in large numbers since white-minority rule ended in 1994. Many South Africans accuse them of taking jobs in a country where the unemployment rate is 24%. Mugabe 'disgust' In a statement, Mr Zuma said: "These attacks go against everything we believe in. The majority of South Africans love peace and good relations with their brothers and sisters in the continent." Then as he visited the refugee camp in the Chatsworth area of Durban - after cancelling a trip to Indonesia - Mr Zuma said in a televised speech: "We are certainly going to stop the violence. Addressing migrants who were planning to return to their home countries, he said: "Those who want to go home, when the violence stops you are welcome to return." Mr Zuma said it was a minority that was causing trouble but the BBC's Southern Africa correspondent, Karen Allen, says he was heckled by some in the crowd who branded his visit as too little, too late, adding that they were planning to leave South Africa altogether. During the anti immigration violence in the past fortnight, police have arrested 150 people for public-order related offences. Several thousand foreigners have fled their homes to shelter in makeshift camps, and neighbouring Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique have announced plans to evacuate citizens. On Saturday, Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, speaking as chair of both the Southern African Development Community and African Union, said: "I would want now to express our sense of shock, disgust, as we abhor the incidences which happened in Durban." Violence had continued overnight, with small groups attacking shops in several areas around Johannesburg. Police used rubber bullets to disperse looters in Alexandra, a township north of the city, with more than 30 people arrested. Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini has been accused of fuelling the attacks by saying that foreigners should "go back to their countries". However, he says his comments were distorted. Official data suggests there are about two million foreign nationals in South Africa, about 4% of the total population. But some estimates put the number of immigrants at five million. http://m.bbc.com/news/world-africa-32365157 |

There are indications that the All Progressives Congress is uncomfortable with the May 28 handover date proposed by the out-going administration. According to Saturday PUNCH, their investigations revealed that the outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan and the President- elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) are set to clash over a proposal by the Jonathan team to hand over the mantle of leadership to Buhari on May the 28th, instead of the 29th. The Buhari team was already over what they considered as an act of ill-will laced with sinister motives. This is sequel to an announcement by the Minister of Information, Senator Patricia Akwashiki, that President Jonathan would perform the handover ceremony at a dinner on May 28. Akwashiki made the announcement after Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council meeting. She told journalists: “By May 28, the President intends to have the formal handover done at a dinner so that we can reserve May 29 for the incoming government.” However, since the return of democracy in 1999, the traditional date for the handover of power has been May 29, which is also observed as Democracy Day. This tradition has been the vogue for the past 16 years. It also presents an opportunity for the outgoing President to formally present the instrument of authority to his successor in the full glare of members of the public, local and international media, as well as foreign dignitaries. A top member of the All Progressives Congress, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media said, “It is simply not acceptable, we are rejecting it, it is a trap.” He explained that from a security point of view, it could be considered a trap. “How can anyone explain a situation where an outgoing president and his team will conveniently excuse themselves from an event where they are supposed to play a role when the President-elect and the Vice-President- elect are supposed to be present?” he queried. According to the party chieftain, power abhors a vacuum as such, the constitution does not envisage a situation where Nigeria will be without a sitting President even for one hour. He said: “If Jonathan hands over on the 28th, who accounts for the hours before the morning of the 29th when the Chief Justice of the Federation is to administer the oath of office and the oath of allegiance? What if there is even a sinister motive to this whole saga? As the President of the nation; who will still be the Chief Security officer until he hands over, there is no excuse that is strong enough to excuse him from the event.” When contacted, a member of the Buhari campaign team, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, said while he was not privy to any meeting on the subject yet, it was only logical to ask Nigerians not to rest on their oars until total liberation was achieved. He described the announcement by President Jonathan to hand over a day earlier than was due as a ploy to rubbish the gains made with the historic win by the opposition APC. Fashakin said: “It (the proposed handover on the 28th) portends ill for the political destiny of this nation. That statement is loaded and it shows that the Nigerian people should not rest yet that there is still ominous signs which we should never take for granted. If Jonathan truly said he is handing over on the 28th it presupposes that he will be absent on the 29th. Number one, if he hands over on the 28th to the President-elect, does Gen. Muhammadu Buhari start to act effectively on that date? The answer is an emphatic NO. GMB does not start to act on that date, if you get what I mean. Handing over to GMB on that date is not only meaningless, it is stupid. It has no meaning in law, or reality. It means that for 24 hours before GMB takes over there will be a vacuum.” He further argued that on the side of morality, Nigeria borrowed its constitution substantially from the American Constitution, and as such, it should learn a thing or two about how it operates. He said there was never a time in recorded history where an outgoing American President, who is hale and hearty, will absent himself from the handover ceremony of his successor no matter their political differences. Although, it is not yet clear how the Buhari team would handle “this threat,” it was learnt that the party’s legal team is being put on notice to be on the alert. It was also gathered that the President-elect and his team have kept the issue of ministerial appointments in abeyance. A member of the party’s National Working Committee, who pleaded for anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media, said, “The general is a meticulous person and we all know that the main task before us now is the transition committee. The issue of who will be minister has been kept in abeyance.” When contacted to speak on the president- elect’s views on the handover date and appointments, the APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said, “You will get our reaction later after due consultation.” Attempts to speak with the Minister of Information proved abortive. She was not in the office when PUNCH visited. However, the Personal Assistant to the Minister on Media, Mr. Joseph Mutah, promised to get in touch with her and revert to their correspondent. He had yet to do that as of the time of going to the press and when his mobile number was called, he did not pick the call. The Information Minister had also after the FEC meeting said the President had directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies to prepare their handover notes and submit them to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim, on or before Monday. According to her, it is Anyim’s responsibility to compile the notes, which will form Jonathan’s handover document to Buhari on May 28. She had said: “You know May 29 is our Democracy Day. So, we have activities lined up all through that week, showcasing all what we have achieved and all other things we do normally on our Democracy Day except that this year is special with the inauguration of our new President that is coming up on May 29.” The minister said the valedictory FEC meeting would hold on May 20, adding that everything that required the President’s approval must have been presented to him by May 13. Meanwhile, two Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Sebastian Hon and Joseph Nwobike, on Friday, disagreed on the appropriateness of President Goodluck Jonathan’s decision to hand over on May 28 instead of May 29 when his four-year tenure will statutorily end. The two lawyers spoke with one of PUNCH's correspondents in separate telephone interviews. Hon insisted that the best option was for the President to hand over on May 29 as past presidents had done. But Nwobike said nothing was unconstitutional in the president’s decision as handing over is a process that would end with the inauguration of the incoming president on May 29. Nwobike said: “Handing over is a process and not an event. So the paper work will be done on May 28 and the formalisation and the completion will occur on May 29. So there is clearly nothing unconstitutional about it.” But Hon queried the basis for the President’s plan to hand over on May 28 as doing such on May 29 as it is usually done would not affect the nation’s democracy. He said: “The best and the most appropriate thing to do is for President Jonathan to hand over at 12.01am of the morning of May 29, 2015. If he hands over before May 29, it means he is no longer the president. He should hand over by 12.01am of May 29 or do as the usual practice by 7am in the past. It will not be late if it is done by 7am on the morning of May 29. Remember that all former presidents took over on the morning of May 29. If he does that, nobody will query him and the transition will not be truncated.” http://www..com/talk/topic,256102.0.html |
