Two men, Gabriel Obi and Ugwu Geofrey, have been arraigned before a Federal High Court in Lagos for allegedly importing 110 kilogrammes of cocaine. The accused were arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on two counts bordering on drug trafficking. According to the prosecutor, Mrs. Ahaji Obiageri, the suspects conspired with one Chimezie Akunna, who is now at large, to commit the offence. The accused were said to have been apprehended by the NDLEA men in January 2011 at the Tin-Can Port, Lagos. They were said to have packaged the illegal substance inside a container and brought it into Nigeria from Bolivia. The charge read in part, “That you, Gabriel Obi, Ugwu Geofrey and Akunna Chimezie, on or about January, 13, 2011, at the Tin-Can Port, Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, without lawful authority, imported 110 kg of cocaine from Bolivia, South America, using a container ─ MSCU 3668026 ─ thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 11(a) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap N30, Law of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.” The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court adjourned the trial till June 24, 2015. http://www.punchng.com/metro-plus/ndlea-arraigns-two-for-importing-cocaine/ |
The Federal Government has condemned the execution of four Nigerians by the Indonesian authorities over drug-related offences, despite pleas for clemency by President Goodluck Jonathan. The government, while commiserating with the families of the deceased, demanded the repatriation of the corpses of the executed Nigerians. It explained that they would be given decent burials by their various communities. A terse statement on Wednesday from the Public Communications Division of Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, gave the names of the executed Nigerians as Martin Anderson, Okwudili Oyatanze, Jaminu Abashin and Sylvester Obiekwe. The government warned Nigerians to desist from drug trafficking and other offences. The statement read in part, “The Federal Government of Nigeria has received with deep disappointment, news of the execution of four Nigerians ─ Martin Anderson, Okwudili Oyatanze, Jaminu Abashin and Sylvester Obiekwe ─ by the government of Indonesia for drug-related offences. “These executions have taken place despite spirited pleas for clemency made at the highest level by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, and more recently by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Aminu Wali. “The Federal Government wishes to express its condolences to the families of the deceased. “It has asked the Indonesian government for the repatriation of the remains of the executed persons so that they can be accorded decent burials by their various communities. “Furthermore, government is committed to engage the government of Indonesia and other friendly countries regarding the conclusion of Prisoner Transfer Agreements and other bilateral means of safeguarding the interest and welfare of Nigerians.” The convicts were reportedly taken to the Nusakambangan Island where they were executed by firing squad on Tuesday. …Indonesia defends executions Indonesia on Wednesday staunchly defended its execution of seven foreigners including two Australians as a vital front of its “war” on drugs as testimony emerged of how they went singing to their deaths, The Times of India reports. Australia withdrew its ambassador in protest at the midnight executions, but Indonesian President, Joko Widodo, said he was merely applying “the rule of law” against narcotics traffickers. The seven convicts – two from Australia, one from Brazil and four from Africa – were shot by firing squad along with one Indonesian, despite strident foreign appeals and pleas from family members. Brazil expressed “deep regret” at the execution of its national, who is mentally ill according to his family, and said it was weighing its next move. The condemned men reportedly all refused blindfolds and sang hymns, among them “Amazing Grace”, as they went to face the firing squad in a jungle clearing, according to a pastor who was with them. As the clock ticked down to midnight, a group of tearful supporters also sang hymns, embraced and held candles aloft during a vigil at the port in Cilacap, the gateway to the prison island of Nusakambangan. After the executions, family members could be seen crying as they were ushered away by friends and supporters, an AFP reporter saw. A Filipina originally set to be executed was given an 11th hour reprieve after a woman who allegedly duped her into ferrying drugs to Indonesia came forward to police in the Philippines. The reprieve for Mary Jane Veloso was hailed in the Philippines as a miracle and a gift from God, but Indonesian Attorney General Muhammad Prasetyo stressed it was only a “postponement” to allow time for police investigations. http://www.punchng.com/news/fg-demands-corpses-of-executed-nigerians/

The authorities of the University of Lagos have offered automatic employment to all the institution’s graduates who obtained first class degrees. The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Rahamon Bello, announced this on Wednesday during the institution’s 2013/2014 convocation. No fewer than 125 persons obtained first class degrees with 21-year-old Korede Akinpelumi, emerging as the overall best graduating student. Akinpelumi, a Chemical Engineering graduate, obtained a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.96 out of five points. The idea of providing them employment, according to Bello, is to promote a culture of excellence in the citadel of learning. The VC, who said that the Governing Council of the university had approved the job offers, added that the recipients would be employed as graduate assistants. Bello added, “Let me acknowledge the support of the Governing Council of the university for the promotion of excellence in the institution. It has just approved that commencing from this year, the two best graduating students, with CGPA not less than 4.00, in each of our programmes, be automatically employed as graduate assistants. This will enable the retention of some of our best brains in the system while fostering Ph.D training at the university.” The VC, who solicited better funding for higher institutions in the country, urged the President- elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to endeavour to insulate tertiary institutions from fluctuations of the economy. Such insulation, he said, would help the schools to be stable as well and enable them to contribute positively to the nation’s economic development. He also condemned the recent violence in Kenya and South Africa, saying that the killings would retard economic and social development on the continent. Bello said, “The use of violence and the killings of innocent lives on mutual and other issues that could be otherwise addressed, are not only barbaric but would also retard economic and social development. Its impact on higher education is real. The University of Lagos currently has a few of its academic members of staff pursuing Ph.D programmes in South Africa and a lot of partnerships exist between us and many of the universities in South Africa. Internalisation and exchange activities as well as joint research efforts are bound to be hampered if not scuttled by this kind of activities. This should not only be condemned but should also not be allowed to rear its head on our continent again.” Meanwhile, the UNILAG Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Jerry Gana, has urged the Federal Government to review the model of funding education in the country. http://www.punchng.com/news/unilag-offers-automatic-employment-to-first-class-holders/ |

The President, Institute of Public Analysts of Nigeria, Dr. Dahiru Adamu, has said that shortage of ISO 17025 accredited laboratories is frustrating the growth of the country’s health and manufacturing sectors. Adamu, who stated this, also noted that Nigeria has only two ISO 17025 accredited laboratories. Urging the Federal Government to address this shortage urgently, he noted that China has 337,033; United States, 13,000; South Korea, 7,000 and South Africa 340 ISO 17025 accredited laboratories. He also frowned on the use of unregistered foreign consulting laboratories/consultants in the country, saying the action was unacceptable. He spoke on Tuesday in Ilorin, Kwara State during the IPAN 21st workshop entitled, “Your laboratory, your business.” Adamu said, “Until we achieve that critical mass, we can’t guarantee safety and quality of products, and water. The IPAN acting Registrar, Mr. Durosinlorun Abdusalam, urged the participants to be abreast of new technologies in the industry. Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed called on the Federal Government to ensure stiffer punishment against marketers of imported sub-standard products and food. He also called for a zero tolerance policy for sales and importation of such goods and products http://www.punchng.com/health/nigeria-has-only-two-iso-accredited-laboratories/ |
As they walked to face the firing squad on an Indonesian prison island, eight condemned drug traffickers defiantly sang praise to God, witnesses said, while in a town across the water a group of tearful supporters was also uniting in song. The convicts — two from Australia, one from Brazil, four from Africa and one Indonesian — made the long journey from their prison to clearings on a prison island to meet their fate early Wednesday. But rather than bow their heads in defeat and resignation, the convicts all reportedly refused blindfolds and raised their voices in song, including a rendition of “Amazing Grace”, until the gunfire from the firing squads rang out. The husband of Pastor Christie Buckingham, who gave spiritual guidance to one of the Australians in his final moments, said his wife told him the men conducted themselves with “dignity and strength until the end”. “She told me the eight of them walked out onto the killing field singing songs of praise,” Rob Buckingham told 3AW radio in Australia. Across the water in the town of Cilacap, the final crossing point for inmates destined for death on the high-security Nusakambangan island, a small band of mourners held a candlelight vigil, and also sang “Amazing Grace”. The haunting sounds filled the night sky, drowning out the sobs of those too distressed to contemplate what was taking place in the jungle- clad hills of the prison island. One man wailed loudly and implored Indonesian President Joko Widodo to have mercy. Another supporter read out the names of each inmate one by one. – ‘Like a resurrection’ – Owen Pomana, a former convict turned pastor and friend of Australian convicts Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, tried to buoy the spirits of those dwelling on the fate of the prisoners. “Fear not, they have nothing to fear!” he declared of the condemned inmates. Moments later, the eight inmates were dead, executed by 12-man firing squads after being tied to posts. Just before dawn, their bodies returned from the island in coffins, some covered in embroidery. Family members could be seen crying, ushered away by friends and supporters to begin the long journey to bury their loved ones. Angelita Muxfeldt, the cousin of Brazilian inmate Rodrigo Gularte, wept as she was led through the large throng of onlookers by Father Charlie Burrows. But others shed tears of joy. The family and friends of Filipina convict Mary Jane Veloso — who was moments away from being executed with the others only to be granted a reprieve — rushed to the port to embrace and express their disbelief. Father Harold Toledano, a Filipino priest assisting the Veloso family throughout their plight, had been praying when he heard the good news. “This is a miracle for us,” he cried, as Veloso’s lawyers and supporters celebrated. “It’s like a resurrection for us. She is alive.” For the Chan and Sukumaran families, there was no such solace. They had lost their sons, their brothers, after begging for their lives to be spared at every possible opportunity. “They asked for mercy, but there was none,” the family said in a statement after the executions. They will bury their loved ones soon, but won’t be the first. Barely had the dust settled at Cilacap port when Zainal Abidin — the sole Indonesian prisoner among the group — was laid to rest at a nearby graveyard. http://www.punchng.com/news/indonesia-convicts-sang-praise-to-god-before-execution/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter |

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Tinubu, has disclosed that he had never done anything wrong to the chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, that will make him apologise to him. Tinubu added that George was trying to implicate him in the criminal proceedings, which the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), an agency of the federal government, initiated against him concerning financial irregularities brought against him at the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA). He provided the clarification in a statement by his media assistant, Mr. Sunday Dare yesterday, insisting that he did not “know when and how he ever offended the PDP chieftain. I have never wronged the man or even thought of it. I sought no forgiveness because no forgiveness was needed.” According to him, George claims the alleged apology was made at the burial of Chief Alao Arisekola. “On that date, personalities such as Oba Otudeko and Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State approached me because I did not greet George initially.” On this note, he said the personalities pleaded with him to greet George, at least in the memory of Arisekola, whom they gathered “to honour. On this ground, they said, I should greet George. At their request, I turned back and came to greet him by saying: ‘Good afternoon, Egbon.’ That was all. “If George wishes to interpret that as an apology, he has the right to do so. I also have the right to state categorically that no apology was made or even intended. I think he is trying to find a way to walk back from his election hyperbole that he would go on exile if the APC won the Lagos State governorship election. “He realises that Lagos under the APC is a very good place to live after all. If he wants to remain in Lagos, he does not have to manufacture an excuse or explain away his bad words. Neither the APC nor I have any aims against him. In the election, the people rejected his party and his brand of politics. That is enough for us. He, however, observed that the PDP chieftain “is still trying to implicate me as instigating the criminal proceedings once lodged against him. From my recollection, George was found guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction based on convincing evidence of wrongdoing. He insults the judiciary by implying that his conviction was wrongly derived.” The national leader explained that George adduced more power to him than what he could possibly wield, noting that he had never had nor sought much influence in those circles outside his statutory office or his purview. He said: “I am flattered, but in all humility I must protest the false assessment. If he can remember, the government of the day was that of the PDP. He was charged by the government ruled by his own party for an offence concerning financial irregularities at the Nigeria Port Authority, NPA, an appointment he received from the same government.” He, therefore, said it was an incredible tale indeed “to state that somehow I could direct a party that tried to dismantle the progressive political structure of my party to bring down one of its key members. “The more plausible explanation for his legal tribulation was that a member of his own cabal blew the whistle on George’s antics for reasons that only he and that person truly know. The rest is now history,” he explained. He added that he believed George was convicted of invoice splitting, a violation of financial regulations, noting that the malpractice “is a deliberate circumvention of the law so that the culprit may approve expenditures above his mandated authority to do so and without proper oversight. “In the end, it was George’s own hand and actions that led to his incarceration more than anything I could ever have done. But we have moved on to greater progress. We have no time or inclination to trouble ourselves by troubling George. Any trouble he is experiencing is a product of his own mind,” he explained. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/tinubu-i-have-no-reason-to-apologise-to-bode-george/208061/?utm_medium=twitter |

The Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mr Kayode Idowu, in an interview with Channels Television noted that in the review, the commission would be examining areas where it had problems within the general elections and begin to explore alternatives that would facilitate the electoral process. Speaking on Saturday’s supplementary elections in Taraba, Imo and Abia states, Mr Idowu said that the elections went well in the states despite pockets of issues. He maintained an earlier stance that the commission would not fail to prosecute election offenders. http://www.channelstv.com/2015/04/26/inec-begins-election-review-process-vows-to-prosecute-offenders/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |
A consultant dermatologist, Dr Glory Iwuchukwu, on Monday identified genetic factors, stress and poor nutrition as the major causes of baldness in middle aged men. Dr Iwuchukwu, who works at the Lagos University teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, made the disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. She defined baldness as a condition that caused hair loss along the hairline at the top of the head or temples and progressed back towards the base of the skull. She explained that men whose fathers had experienced baldness were more likely to experience hair loss themselves and that it usually occurred in men with male-pattern baldness due to genetic factors. “Genetic factor is the most common cause of baldness among middle aged men because it’s been passed from one generation to the other. “This genetic factor varies; it could be inherited from either parents but in most cases fathers can easily pass on the trait which would be possible if it were X chromosomes,’’ she said. Iwuchukwu said that another cause of baldness was emotional stress and fatigue due to lack of good sleep which was the common factor among Nigerian men. “A lot of people who do not get adequate sleep are stressed and this can cause hair loss. In Nigeria, we do not sleep well because we want to meet up with our life`s needs. “And once there is alteration in our sleeping pattern, it affects the body’s immune function, hormone secretion and physical and mental stamina,’’ she said. Iwuchukwu said that the hair was very sensitive to changes within the body and baldness was always the consequence of such an internal disturbance, she said. The consultant also cited inadequate nutrition as another cause of baldness. “Drinking water to keep the body hydrated and eating foods and fruits with vitamins could play an important role in keeping the hair follicles and the skin of the scalp healthy. “At least the intake of six to eight glasses of water daily is the usual recommended amount for an average person,’’ she said. She, however, advised that adequate nutrition, reduced stress and adequate sleep could be helpful in slowing or preventing baldness. According to Iwuchukwu, some forms of surgery, such as hair transplant and scalp reduction are also used to treat baldness though they can be both expensive and painful. http://thenationonlineng.net/new/how-stress-poor-nutrition-causes-baldness/ |
