The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has described as baseless and speculative, reports that the strike embarked upon by the union would be called off this Thursday. National President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Fagge, said he was surprised to hear that the union was going to call off the strike on Thursday when the issues tabled before government had not been resolved. ASUU had embarked on an indefinite strike over the inability of the Federal Government to implement the 2009 agreement it willingly entered into with the union. “There is nothing like that (suspending the strike). I am also surprised to hear people say that we are going to call off the strike,” Faggae said. “Our members have made it categorically clear what they want. This meeting we had with government on Friday at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, is just exploratory. “We are trying to look at issues holistically and see how we are going to address them. So assignments were given to various people that attended the meeting and the expectation is that we will meet tomorrow (today), Monday and look at the assignment given and also lookat it on Thursday again. “So, that is why I’m surprised to hear people say that we are going to suspend strike on Thursday. The mandate of our members is very clear. So, we will wait and see what the Monday and Thursday meetings unfold and then we report back to our membershttp://gistofnigeria..com/2013/07/no-plans-to-call-off-strike-ASUU.html |

National President, ASUU, Nasir Issa-Fagee | credits: www.channelstv.com The Academic Staff Union of Universities has blamed the decay in the sector on the political class. The Convener, ASUU Committee on HumanRights, Dr. Sola Olorunyomi, in Ibadan on Saturday said it would prevail on the leadership in ensuring that education was given desired attention. He said, “The Federal Government conspired with the political class to under-develop education at the detriment of national growth and development. The leadership abdicates their responsibility by under-funding education.” ASUU is currently on strike over the non-implementation of its 2009 agreement with the FG. Olorunyomi said the union called for progressive increase in budgetary allocation to education, federal assistance to state universities, funding for revitalisation of Nigerian universities and earned allowances, among others. “The union has vowed to forge ahead with the strike until the agreements have been fully implemented. The enslavement muststop. The underfunding of research has made conduct of cutting edge researches apipeline dream in Nigeria,” he said. On the issue of ‘No work no pay’, Olorunyomi said members of the committee resolved not to be caged by thethreat. He said, “Full implementation of the agreement is the basis for which the lecturers would return to classrooms. “After about 300 years of slave trade, the Federal Government attempts to make this era of second or third slavery. The students have said we should not be back without achieving results.http://gistofnigeria..com/2013/07/ASUU-blames-fg-for-poor-funding-of.html |
