7 Major Reasons Why Smart Youths & Students Are Voting For Atiku This Saturday

Nigerian students are among the most intelligent in the world. From Lagos to Owerri, from London to New York, the intellectual capacity of the young Nigerian is renowned. An analysis conducted by Rice University in the U.S. showed that Nigerian youths are the most educated of all migrants in the country. The institution credited the finding to a culture of relentless drive for education amongst Nigerians.

This Saturday, young Nigerians and students will be faced with task of selecting between a party that built 11 brand new universities from scratch in 3 years , sweeping millions of jambites into undergraduate programs and a party party that views youths and students as miscreants in the words of one of their leaders popularly known as "constituted authority".

There are several reasons why young Nigerians and students who have reached the voting age should kick out the cattle herder who glorifies cattles over human lives and the law professor under whose watch Nigeria's constitution is being raped with reckless abandon.

It takes a smart person to recognize incompetence, but only a man whose conscience is not snared can look beyond ethnic and religious sentiments to make an objective assessment. Here is why Nigerians youths and students should vote Atiku this Saturday:

1.The Extreme Hunger and Poverty In Our Hostels and Campuses

It is no news that life has become virtually unbearable for most Nigerians. Under the APC government of Buhari, the naira started competing with the Zimbabwean dollar for irrelevance as the prices of food stuffs soared.

The price of rice , garri and Indomie doubled, gala shrunk in size, while the salaries of most parents and sponsors remained stagnant or lost value. Many others became casualties of the job loss tsunami triggered by a medieval era economic policy known as Buharinomics which was described as the height of foolishness by the Financial Times of London.

The few parents and sponsors that managed to keep their jobs after the implementation of this policy could hardly support their wards because salaries were not paid. Under Buhari, we became the world headquarters for extreme hunger and poverty.

The good news here is that with an Atiku Presidency anchored on job creation and the opening up of the economy , joy and happiness is set to replace hunger and anger on our campuses. In the words of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria needs Atiku to make life more meaningful.( Nov 26. 2016 Daily Post)

2. The Inhuman Hike In school fees and Accommodation Charges

Despite renaging on virtually all their promises, the APC and its governors have inflicted untold hardship on Nigerian students. APC as a party is renowned for arbitrary hike in tuition fees and indiscriminate closure of schools when students protest such hikes. It took the intervention of ASUU and the upcoming elections for the Buhari administration to suspend the proposed increase in tuition fees to =N= 350,000. Voting for Buhari on saturday is an endorsement of the plan to increase the tuition of fee of public universities to between N350, 000 to N500, 000 per session.

3. The Burden Of Transportation Cost On and Off Campus

Despite their pseudo promise that Nigerians will buy fuel for =N= 40 per liter , Nigerian students both on and off campuses have had to bear the brunt of high transport fares owing to the increase in the price of petroleum products by Buhari. High transport fares have also complicated life for students on Industrial training and catapulted cost of living for virtually everyone.

Unlike the current fraudulent subsidy regime being operated by the cabal, Atiku and Obi intend to clean up the system and provide affordable and easily accessible transportation system that would be fully integrated across the length and breadth of Nigeria making life much better for all Nigerians.

4. Nepotism & Employment Of Unqualified Lecturers.

Following the illegal sack of vice chacellors of Federal institutions by this regime, many federal universities which hitherto had a Nigerian outlook began wearing Northern look with the disengagement of non native lecturers and the employment of lecturers who can hardly express themselves in English teaching undergraduate students who knew better than them. With merit and intellectual capacity being slaughtered on the alter of nepotism,
the result was a catastrophic fall in the standard of education in the federal universities affected.

What will Atiku do differently? This is how Garba Shehu, Atiku's former spokesman describes him "Even those who don’t like him say Atiku does not compromise on quality. 5. Destruction Of the Almajiri School Legacy

According to UNICEF, the North East alone has about 3 Million Almajiris. The PDP through President Goodluck Jonathan created a path that began the transformation and reformation of the Almajiri school system. This resulted in the construction of commissioning of about 200 Almajiri schools with library , mosque and Mallams quarters .
However, on November 17 , 2017 just two years into Buharis administration, The Daily Trust Newspaper reported that this laudable initiative of the PDP is now in ruins leaving an estimated 10 million Almajiri students wondering the streets of northern Nigeria with many becoming willing tools in the hands of extremists. This explains why Nigeria currently has 13.2 million out-of-school children about the highest in the world.

Atiku is a very compassionate person, unlike the malevolent fellow from Daura who does not care according to Amaechi, Atiku's holistic plan for education will ensure that our out of school children return to school at the shortest possible time , his UBE credentials and his actions during the Anambara school closure saga by Mbadinuju speaks for itself.


6.The Reckless Abandonment of Kano Students Abroad

Buhari watched helplessly as Ganduje stuff millions of dollars into the Central bank located inside his baban riga yet refusing to pay the tuition fees of Kano state students sent abroad during Kwankwaso' s era even though he was part and parcel of that government as deputy governor.

Why will a President allow his citizens to roam the streets of a foreign country begging for food, simply because he wants to send a message to a political foe?

Nigeria needs a students and youth friendly president like Atiku , one who understands young people and connects with their hopes and aspirations. Even when the Special Eagles where stranded, it was Atiku who came to their rescue and ensured our country was not disgraced.

7. Buharis Penchant For Demarketing Young Nigerians

The youths constitute a vast majority of the Nigerian students population. Despite their immense contribution to nation building, Buhari has used every available opportunity on the international stage to rubbish them in the eyes of the international community.

During a February 2016 interview with UK Telegraph, Mr Buhari said most Nigerian youths in the UK are disposed to criminality despite the fact that young Nigerian students are among the top performing students throughout the United Kingdom.

Even though research has clearly shown that young Nigerians are the most educated, our president still went ahead to describe us as the most uneducated and lazy crop of people at the Commonwealth Business Forum in the United Kingdom, attended by Heads of State and Government of 53 nations.

In contrast, Atiku passionately believes in the young Nigerian, he has openly declared his willingness to nuture our entraprenural drive and support us to achieve our dreams.

Having tried an analogue president and witnessed it's catastrophic consequence on a 21st century economy, it is time to elect a digital president

Having tried a cattle rearer with unproductive cows, it is time to elect a man that understands the demands of a global economy.

1. Buhari is the most nepotistic Nigerian president ever. He makes no pretense about it.

2. Economy, Anti-Terrorism and Anti-Corruption: These were his 3 cardinal campaign points in 2015. He failed in all of them.

3. In 2015, even before he appointed Ministers, Buhari approved over N39.4 billion naira to NNPC to prospect for crude oil in Northern Nigeria. The project has turned out to be a total waste of taxpayers’ money.

4. His current tenure witnessed the 3rd economic recession in Nigeria. The first was during his regime as a military dictator.

5. Within 3 years of his government, over 11 million Nigerians lost their jobs.

6. Under Buhari’s watch, Nigeria became the poverty capital of the world. 86.9 million Nigerians are now living in extreme poverty. This represents nearly 50% of its estimated population of 180 million.

7. Killings by Fulani Herdsmen rose to an unprecedented scale under Buhari’s watch. The killings were carried out with impunity.

16. According to an Amnesty International report, the killer Fulani herdsmen have slaughtered 3,641 Nigerians. All these killings occurred within 3 years of the Buhari rule.

18. Folarin Coker, the former head of an agency in Lagos state, diverted N3billion from the account of the state government into his Wife's 32 bank accounts. Buhari recruited him into his government, as the DG, NTDC. The corruption case died a natural death.

19. The Nigerian currency – the Naira - devalued under his watch. The currency lost more than 50℅ of its value within a few months of his government.

20. Buhari’s mismanagement of the economy introduced Double digit inflation to the country.

21. Abba Kyari - Buhari’s Chief of Staff (CoS) - took a N500m bribe from MTN. He did it to help the company reduce the $5.2 billion fine imposed on it by the federal government. Even with concrete evidences presented to Buhari, he did nothing about it.

22. According to UNICEF, 13.2 million Nigerian children are now out of school. This is the highest in the world. Of which 69 % of these out-of-school children are in the North.

23. The Buhari government’s incompetence are often demonstrated when he appoints dead people into government agencies.

24. Nigeria is currently ranked as the 3rd Most Terrorized Global Nation among countries worst hit by terrorism. Nigeria has held that position four times consecutively during the Buhari administration.

83. He enjoys foreign health facilities, while thousands of Nigerians die in ill-equipped hospitals in Nigeria. Yet, he has not built a single hospital in Nigeria.

84. Buhari retained Ibrahim Magu as the acting EFCC Chairman despite the fact that the Senate failed to confirm him twice.

85. He insisted that Abacha never stole, yet his government has benefited enormously from the unending return of the Abacha loot.

86. He craves for extreme powers. For instance, he demanded to have emergency powers in his first few months in office. LESS than 48 hours from now, Nigerians will elect a new president. There is, understandably, both excitement and anxiety in the air. Whichever way the election goes, its outcome will be consequential.


I am as excited as I was four years ago. This time in 2015, I had concluded that President Goodluck Jonathan was not fit for purpose and supported the then candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, General Muhammadu Buhari.

Today, I have also concluded just as I did four years ago that President Buhari is not fit for purpose and I am determined to ensure that as Jonathan was sent back to Otuoke, he is sent back to Daura.

There are two groups of Nigerians opposed to Buhari’s re-election.

The first are those who ab-initio never saw anything good in him; never believed in his capacity and who perceived him as a dyed-in-the-wool dictator and irredeemable ethnic jingoist. Such people are not disappointed at the unravelling of the Buhari presidency and the sentiment is more of: “But we told you.”

The second are those who believed that Buhari was actually a democracy-convert as claimed, who had purged himself of unbridled nepotism and could actually provide the leadership Nigeria sorely needed, despite his antecedents. I belong to this group.

Economic policies

I had just left secondary school when Buhari shot himself to power on December 31, 1983. At the time his colleagues dislodged him from his high perch on August 27, 1985, I was in the higher institution.

So, I knew firsthand what he did in the 20 months he was in office as a maximum military ruler.

His regime’s warped economic policies, particularly the curb on imports led to job losses and business closures. I witnessed the disingenuous introduction of a new currency supposedly to tackle corruption and the consequence. Prices rose, living standards fell, and Nigerians were queuing up for essential commodities.

I witnessed the retroactive application of a law under Buhari’s watch leading to the public execution of three young Nigerians convicted of drug peddling, a crime that did not carry a death penalty at the time it was committed.

But I believed him when he said he was a changed person. I convinced myself that he would put together a formidable team and provide the disciplined leadership that was sorely lacking in the preceding administration.

At 72, I reasoned that Buhari must have purged himself of every vestige of ultra-ethnic agenda, having fully come of age.

How wrong I was.

Some Nigerians are of the view that in spite of everything, President Buhari will be re-elected. In arriving at this conclusion, they deploy illogical reasoning and hackneyed permutations, ignoring the fact that unlike in 2015, Saturday’s election is a referendum on the Buhari presidency. Try as hard as APC is doing to put Jonathan on the ballot, truth is, he is not and cannot be.

Besides, the conditions that made the 2015 Buhari victory a fait accompli have changed dramatically.

In 2015, Jonathan’s candidature united the North behind Buhari. The support from the South West became an icing on his victory cake.

But even at that, Buhari won the presidential election with only 2.57 million votes, scoring 15,424,921 votes (53.95 percent) of the 28,587,564 total valid votes cast against Jonathan’s 12,853,162 (44.96 percent).

In 2015, Buhari received 2.4 million South West votes, with a plurality of 600,000 over Jonathan. Even in Lagos, with all the noise and the fabled Bola Tinubu factor, APC prevailed with only 160,000 votes.

In 2015, Jonathan ran on his records and failed because Nigerians didn’t think much of the scorecard he presented and Buhari ran on promises, propaganda and lies.

Now, that paradigm has shifted. After four years in office, Buhari will run this election not on promises, innuendoes and propaganda but on the record of his achievements in office.

The simple but important question that will agitate the minds of discerning, albeit ordinary, Nigerians as they cast their ballot on Saturday is: Am I better off today than I was four years ago?

Buhari lost the South East and South-South zones in 2015 when the crocodiles were not smiling and pythons were not dancing.

Things have changed dramatically since then. Today, pythons are busy exhibiting new and fatal dance steps in the South East every year with dire consequences for beleaguered youths of the region.

When Buhari won the presidency in 2015, the Shiites were part of the 15,424,921 that made the victory possible. Before the election, Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai, led Buhari to visit the leader of the group, Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky, at his Kaduna lair to seek support. He was obliged.

A lot has happened since then. In 2015, the Zaria massacre occurred during which 348 Shiites (some accounts put the number at over 1000) were killed by Nigerian soldiers and buried in mass graves. The dead included three children of Zakzaky. Since then, he has been locked up together with his wife even when the courts have granted them bail.

In April 2018, clashes broke out as the Nigeria Police fired teargas at Shiites protesters who were demanding the release of Zakzaky. The clashes left many dead and several others injured. The police detained at least 115 of the protesters. In October 2018, Nigerian military again killed at least 45 peaceful Shiites protesters.

Today, el-Rufai, the President’s Man Friday has exacerbated the distrust between Christians of Southern Kaduna and Muslims in the state.

Benue, a stronghold of the PDP had no IDP camps before 2015. They voted for Buhari, elected an APC governor. Today, thousands of indigenes live in IDP camps in Makurdi, afraid to go to their ancestral homes that have been taken over and effectively occupied by armed herdsmen.

In 2015, the ubiquitous and very powerful college of retired generals that have determined how the political pendulum swung since the first military coup of January 15, 1966 were in Buhari’s column.

Today, many of them, including Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibrahim Babangida, Theophilus Danjuma, Aliyu Gusau, are not.

And some people say it does not matter. Really?

In 2015, the all-powerful Lagos-Ibadan wing of the human and civil rights community were behind Buhari. Today, some of them, including Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, have distanced themselves from him

In 2015, some of the country’s most prolific and powerful columnists were with Buhari. Today, the likes of Farooq Kperogi, Sonala Olumhense and Dele Momodu have openly rebelled against him.

In 2015, the international community, particularly the U.S. under President Barack Obama’s watch and Britain with David Cameron as Prime Minister, overtly supported Buhari. I doubt if those countries are still queuing behind him today.

In 2015, Buhari contested against Jonathan, a Southern minority Christian with no political base. Today, he is running against one of the most formidable politicians in this dispensation, a man with a solid political base, clout and deep pocket, a Fulani Moslem, from a region – North East – that last held power when Alhaji Tafawa Balewa from Bauchi State was the Prime Minister in the First Republic.

In 2015, APC went into the elections as a united, pragmatic and determined party hungry for power, eager to make a resounding political statement against a highly fractious, disorganised and disoriented PDP. Today, the reverse is the case. A strong, rejuvenated and virile PDP is going into Saturday’s election with a highly fractured, hemorrhaging APC where some governors are not in talking terms with the national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

In 2015, it was the PDP presidential campaign convoys that were stoned, booed and jeered. Today, it is the APC. On Monday, President Buhari nearly took a stone meant for Oshiomhole at a campaign rally in Abeokuta.

Yet, some people insist that Buhari still has his fabled 11 million votes locked up somewhere.

 PDP has been able to dramatically reinvent itself and stage a remarkable comeback, APC cannot because of its inherent contradictions.

45. The “Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG)” protesters - on whose protests Buhari rode to the presidency of Nigeria - were tear gassed and persecuted by the Buhari government.

46. On a live TV broadcast, Buhari defended the Governor of Kano state who was caught on camera receiving $5m bribe.

47. Under his watch, his VP and his political party (APC) engages in systematic vote buying disguised as “Trader Monie”.

48. A good number of politicians working for Buhari’s re-election have pending corruption cases bordering on stolen monies worth about N300bn. They include: Abdullahi Adamu (N15bn); Aliyu Wamakko (N15bn); Godswill Akpabio (N100bn); Orji Uzor Kalu (N3.2bn); Babachir Lawal (N223m); Rotimi Amaechi (N97bn); Abdul’aziz Yari (N680m); Adams Oshiomhole ($51m); Bola Tinubu (N100bn); Abba Kyari (N500m); Musiliu Obanikoro (N4.7bn); Folarin Coker (N3bn), etc.

49. A member of the Buhari kitchen cabinet – Babachir Lawal - spent N220million to cut grass at an IDP camp. Yet, he has not been prosecuted for the offence.

50. The disgraced and sacked SGF, Babachir Lawal, was replaced with his cousin, Boss Mustapher. Effectively retaining the SGF position within his family.

51. The only leader that retains his appointees to government offices even when the senate refuses to confirm them or outrightly rejects the confirmation of such persons.

52. Under his administration, the Nigerian Stock Exchange lost more than 50℅ of its value.

53. Transparency International announced that corruption increased during Buhari’s government. The country's corruption perception index rose from 136th (2016) to 148th (2018) in the ranking.

54. He dominates the federal judiciary with northern Muslims i.e. Chief Justice of Nigeria (Mahmud Mohammed/Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad), president of the Court of Appeal, Chief Judge of the Federal High Court.

55. He has shown that he is not intellectually wired to understand when corruption is going on around him.

56. Adams Oshiomhole was accused by some of his party members of receiving bribes worth about $55 million before and after the APC primaries all over the country. The case is dead and buried by the Buhari government.

57. A Senator sympathetic to Buhari hired hoodlums who invaded the National Assembly and stole the maze. Buhari did nothing to bring the Senator to book.

58. Buhari promised to end medical tourism by public officials when he becomes president. When he became president, he became Nigeria’s biggest medical tourist.

59. His wife, Aisha Buhari, cried out and revealed that Buhari is not in control of the government. She further revealed that a certain cabal runs the show.

60. Under his watch, INEC created mobile voting centers for Muslim IDPs. This is unknown to the Electoral Act. He has refused to make same or similar arrangements for IDPs of Southeast and minority nationalities’ extraction such as through voters’ cards’ transfer provided in the Electoral Act of 2010.

61. The Buhari government spent an entire tenure blaming past governments for problems they were elected to fix.

62. Buhari’s nephew – Hadi Sirika, the Minister of State for Aviation - spent N1.5 billion naira of taxpayers money on propaganda and to kick-start the national airline – “Nigeria Air”. The company folded up even before it started.

63. Buhari is never aware of anything that goes on in his government and under his watch.

64. Alpha Beta Consult – a company that belongs to Bola Tinubu is facing a N100 billion-fraud allegations. Buhari ignored the petition. Instead, Buhari rewarded him with an important position in his re-election campaign team.

65. He pretends to be poor while his family lives in opulence. His children attend £26, 000 a year universities in the UK. His son had an accident with his motorbike estimated to be worth tens of millions of Naira.

66. He is resolute in his pursuit of the northern agenda.

67. The Buhari government lied that it has “technically” defeated Boko Haram. Still, he approved $1billion to fight insurgency in the North East.

68. The IPOB agitators have never killed anyone. Buhari classified them as a terrorist group. The killer Fulani herdsmen have killed over 3,641 innocent Nigerians. Till date, Buhari has refused to tag them as terrorists.

69. Buhari is the first Nigerian leader to appoint a member of his ethnic group as the head of the nation’s electoral body.

70. The Meyetti Allah is an open and vocal sympathizer of the killer Fulani herdsmen. Buhari is their Grand patron. Yet, he has never called them to order.

71. On several occasions, Buhari pleaded with non-Fulanis to give up their ancestral lands to the rampaging killer Fulani herdsmen.

72. Buhari’s Minister for Information, Lai Mohammed was alleged to have made financial demands from an agency (NBC) under his Ministry. The N13 million “loan” he demanded for was to enable him travel to China. Buhari ignored the allegation.

73. Billions of Naira was allocated to the Aso Rock clinic in the National Budget. Buhari’s wife, Aisha Buhari, revealed that the monies were misappropriated under his watch.

74. They have to translate English to English for Buhari.

75. Okoi Obono-Obla, one of Buhari’s aides – was alleged to have forged his WAEC certificate. Buhari ignored the allegation.

76. The Buhari kitchen cabinet planned and executed a siege on the houses of the Senate President and the Deputy Senate President. They also coordinated a failed legislative coup with a minority group of Senators. This was done to prevent the defection of members from the APC. Buhari never punished them.

77. Buhari supervised the fraudulent and disgraceful conduct of elections in Edo, Ekiti and Osun state.

78. A fugitive and pension thief - Abdulrasheed Maina – the former chairman of the Presidential Pension Task Team was secretly reinstated by the Buhari administration.

79. Under Buhari’s watch, there was a deliberate and scientific exclusion from voting of 12 million registered voters dominated by southern and northern minority populations.

80. Buhari decided that it was a good idea to share $321million of returned Abacha loot amongst some vague Nigerians. A few weeks later, he took a loan of $328 million from China for investment in the telecoms sector.

81. Buhari’s former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, was indicted for certificate forgery. She was never prosecuted.

82. His Chief of Staff - Abba Kyari - was accused by his cousin of collecting N29.9m to facilitate a contract to supply 15 Toyota Hilux vehicles to the Presidential villa, Abuja. Even with evidences provided by the accuser, Buhari defended Kyari on the allegation.

83. He enjoys foreign health facilities, while thousands of Nigerians die in ill-equipped hospitals in Nigeria. Yet, he has not built a single hospital in Nigeria.

84. Buhari retained Ibrahim Magu as the acting EFCC Chairman despite the fact that the Senate failed to confirm him twice.

85. He insisted that Abacha never stole, yet his government has benefited enormously from the unending return of the Abacha loot.

86. He craves for extreme powers. For instance, he demanded to have emergency powers in his first few months in office. Later, he signed and authorized Order 006 to give him powers outside the provisions of the EFCC Act and ICPC Act — as well as the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act and the Criminal Code.

87. Buhari’s Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Ameachi, admitted his incompetence in a leaked audio tape.

88. He is the first president to publicly announce that he would not favour the regions that did not vote for him.

89. Buhari rarely grants interviews to local media. He prefers granting interviews to foreign journalists.

90. In 2015, the Kano state Electoral Commissioner and every member of his family were killed in the most suspicious circumstance. Ibrahim idris, who was the Kano state Commissioner of Police when the incidence occurred, was later rewarded with the position of Inspector General.

91. He runs away from intellectual discussions like debates.

92. He failed to disclose his ailment as it is done in transparent governments all over the world.

93. A human rights activist, Dr. Osadolor Ochei, wrote several petitions to the EFCC against Adams Oshiomole. The petition bothered on alleged looting of Edo state treasury while he was governor of the state. Buhari’s EFCC ignored the petition. Instead, Buhari rewarded Oshiomhole with the APC chairmanship position.

94. Despite its growing unpopularity, Buhari is a stoic crusader for nomadic cattle grazing.

95. Under Buhari administration, the Nigerian international passport now costs N70k, Car Number plate is N75k, driver’s license N30k, etc. Note, these are just the official rates.

96. His appointees and aides show open disregard for other arms of government like the Senate and the House of Representatives.

97. Buhari makes appointments into constitutionally and statutorily created offices in manners clearly incoherent with and unknown to the 1999 Constitution and the Civil Service Rules of the Federation (i.e. appointments of DG of DSS, Custom CG, and former INEC interim Boss).

98. He has shown open disregard for the Federal Character principle, which he has violated countlessly.

99. Buhari’s anti-democratic and dictatorial tendencies exhibits itself on several occasions when he jettisoned the justice and legislative system in order to have his way.

100. Due to some of his recent exhibitions, his memory, mental health status and fitness have become a matter of urgent concern.

LESS than 48 hours from now, Nigerians will elect a new president. There is, understandably, both excitement and anxiety in the air. Whichever way the election goes, its outcome will be consequential.


I am as excited as I was four years ago. This time in 2015, I had concluded that President Goodluck Jonathan was not fit for purpose and supported the then candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, General Muhammadu Buhari.

Today, I have also concluded just as I did four years ago that President Buhari is not fit for purpose and I am determined to ensure that as Jonathan was sent back to Otuoke, he is sent back to Daura.

There are two groups of Nigerians opposed to Buhari’s re-election.

The first are those who ab-initio never saw anything good in him; never believed in his capacity and who perceived him as a dyed-in-the-wool dictator and irredeemable ethnic jingoist. Such people are not disappointed at the unravelling of the Buhari presidency and the sentiment is more of: “But we told you.”

The second are those who believed that Buhari was actually a democracy-convert as claimed, who had purged himself of unbridled nepotism and could actually provide the leadership Nigeria sorely needed, despite his antecedents. I belong to this group.

Economic policies

I had just left secondary school when Buhari shot himself to power on December 31, 1983. At the time his colleagues dislodged him from his high perch on August 27, 1985, I was in the higher institution.

So, I knew firsthand what he did in the 20 months he was in office as a maximum military ruler.

His regime’s warped economic policies, particularly the curb on imports led to job losses and business closures. I witnessed the disingenuous introduction of a new currency supposedly to tackle corruption and the consequence. Prices rose, living standards fell, and Nigerians were queuing up for essential commodities.

I witnessed the retroactive application of a law under Buhari’s watch leading to the public execution of three young Nigerians convicted of drug peddling, a crime that did not carry a death penalty at the time it was committed.

But I believed him when he said he was a changed person. I convinced myself that he would put together a formidable team and provide the disciplined leadership that was sorely lacking in the preceding administration.

At 72, I reasoned that Buhari must have purged himself of every vestige of ultra-ethnic agenda, having fully come of age.

How wrong I was.

Some Nigerians are of the view that in spite of everything, President Buhari will be re-elected. In arriving at this conclusion, they deploy illogical reasoning and hackneyed permutations, ignoring the fact that unlike in 2015, Saturday’s election is a referendum on the Buhari presidency. Try as hard as APC is doing to put Jonathan on the ballot, truth is, he is not and cannot be.

Besides, the conditions that made the 2015 Buhari victory a fait accompli have changed dramatically.

In 2015, Jonathan’s candidature united the North behind Buhari. The support from the South West became an icing on his victory cake.

But even at that, Buhari won the presidential election with only 2.57 million votes, scoring 15,424,921 votes (53.95 percent) of the 28,587,564 total valid votes cast against Jonathan’s 12,853,162 (44.96 percent).

In 2015, Buhari received 2.4 million South West votes, with a plurality of 600,000 over Jonathan. Even in Lagos, with all the noise and the fabled Bola Tinubu factor, APC prevailed with only 160,000 votes.

In 2015, Jonathan ran on his records and failed because Nigerians didn’t think much of the scorecard he presented and Buhari ran on promises, propaganda and lies.

Now, that paradigm has shifted. After four years in office, Buhari will run this election not on promises, innuendoes and propaganda but on the record of his achievements in office.

The simple but important question that will agitate the minds of discerning, albeit ordinary, Nigerians as they cast their ballot on Saturday is: Am I better off today than I was four years ago?

Buhari lost the South East and South-South zones in 2015 when the crocodiles were not smiling and pythons were not dancing.

Things have changed dramatically since then. Today, pythons are busy exhibiting new and fatal dance steps in the South East every year with dire consequences for beleaguered youths of the region.

When Buhari won the presidency in 2015, the Shiites were part of the 15,424,921 that made the victory possible. Before the election, Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai, led Buhari to visit the leader of the group, Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky, at his Kaduna lair to seek support. He was obliged.

A lot has happened since then. In 2015, the Zaria massacre occurred during which 348 Shiites (some accounts put the number at over 1000) were killed by Nigerian soldiers and buried in mass graves. The dead included three children of Zakzaky. Since then, he has been locked up together with his wife even when the courts have granted them bail.

In April 2018, clashes broke out as the Nigeria Police fired teargas at Shiites protesters who were demanding the release of Zakzaky. The clashes left many dead and several others injured. The police detained at least 115 of the protesters. In October 2018, Nigerian military again killed at least 45 peaceful Shiites protesters.

Today, el-Rufai, the President’s Man Friday has exacerbated the distrust between Christians of Southern Kaduna and Muslims in the state.

Benue, a stronghold of the PDP had no IDP camps before 2015. They voted for Buhari, elected an APC governor. Today, thousands of indigenes live in IDP camps in Makurdi, afraid to go to their ancestral homes that have been taken over and effectively occupied by armed herdsmen.

In 2015, the ubiquitous and very powerful college of retired generals that have determined how the political pendulum swung since the first military coup of January 15, 1966 were in Buhari’s column.

Today, many of them, including Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibrahim Babangida, Theophilus Danjuma, Aliyu Gusau, are not.

And some people say it does not matter. Really?

In 2015, the all-powerful Lagos-Ibadan wing of the human and civil rights community were behind Buhari. Today, some of them, including Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, have distanced themselves from him

In 2015, some of the country’s most prolific and powerful columnists were with Buhari. Today, the likes of Farooq Kperogi, Sonala Olumhense and Dele Momodu have openly rebelled against him.

In 2015, the international community, particularly the U.S. under President Barack Obama’s watch and Britain with David Cameron as Prime Minister, overtly supported Buhari. I doubt if those countries are still queuing behind him today.

In 2015, Buhari contested against Jonathan, a Southern minority Christian with no political base. Today, he is running against one of the most formidable politicians in this dispensation, a man with a solid political base, clout and deep pocket, a Fulani Moslem, from a region – North East – that last held power when Alhaji Tafawa Balewa from Bauchi State was the Prime Minister in the First Republic.

In 2015, APC went into the elections as a united, pragmatic and determined party hungry for power, eager to make a resounding political statement against a highly fractious, disorganised and disoriented PDP. Today, the reverse is the case. A strong, rejuvenated and virile PDP is going into Saturday’s election with a highly fractured, hemorrhaging APC where some governors are not in talking terms with the national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

In 2015, it was the PDP presidential campaign convoys that were stoned, booed and jeered. Today, it is the APC. On Monday, President Buhari nearly took a stone meant for Oshiomhole at a campaign rally in Abeokuta.

Yet, some people insist that Buhari still has his fabled 11 million votes locked up somewhere.

 PDP has been able to dramatically reinvent itself and stage a remarkable comeback, APC cannot because of its inherent contradictions.
